WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS VS ADELAIDE UNITED KICKOFF: FRIDAY 7.30PM @ PIRTEK STADIUM | TV: SBS AND FOX SPORTS LIVE 7.30PM | RADIO: ABC LIVE 7.30PM

THE WANDERERS WILL PLAY ADELAIDE AT PIRTEK STADIUM THIS WEEKEND

PREVIEW BY ELISHA PEARCE

First home win beckons A

FTER SLAYING SYDNEY FC in a tumultuous atmosphere at the first Sydney Derby of the year the Wanderers now host Adelaide United and will attempt to solidify their position near the top of the A-League standings. The two draws that kicked off the season for the Wanderers seem like eons ago in the mind of fans present for the boisterous 2-0 derby win at the Sydney Football Stadium. Such was the din created by the massive Red and Black Bloc – extending right across

After only a few rounds the Wanderers supporters have proven they are the most passionate of any Sydney team in any code; and may only trail the Melbourne Victory support group due to the sheer size of the Melbourne team’s following. The massive hype in the build-up to the match somewhat masked the fact the Wanderers really should have won, especially with Alessandro Del Piero out. A pleasing aspect of the performance was the Wanderers’ ability to put two goals in the

leverage success into something more. Already Tony Popovic – well-credentialed, with a successful playing career at the top level coupled with coaching experience with English team Crystal Palace – has been linked with a move back to his old club in the English Premier League where there is a managerial vacancy. Shinji Ono, the architect of one goal and the scorer of the second on Saturday night, wants to parlay his good form into a contract extension just three rounds into the season.

changes and bigger contracts change the look of the team. On the field, the immediate challenge is hosting Adelaide. The Wanderers can expect a possession oriented brand of football that will pose a bigger threat than Sydney FC. The Mariners took three points against Adelaide on the weekend and showed the Wanderers the blueprint for doing the same. A drawback of Adelaide’s short passing system is they don’t attack the goal often enough. A massive 66 per cent possession

“The Wanderers can expect a possession oriented brand of football that will pose a bigger threat than Sydney FC” the southern end of the stadium and along all tiers of the eastern stand up until halfway – you could have been forgiven for needing to check your match-day program or smartphone app to see whose home game it was. Those wondering how the Wanderers would be supported after the euphoria of the first season or in the event of a period of lacklustre results now have their answer to the first question.

back of the net during the first half. Against the Phoenix last week first half dominance yielded only one first half goal and left the opposition with thoughts of snatching a draw – finally their superiority was rewarded. That superiority is a trait that extends through much of the Wanderers squad and into the coaching staff. A result of that talent is a tendency toward instability as players and coaches consider their own career and whether they can

The extremely dangerous, if slightly injury prone, Youssouf Hersi has also demanded a multi-year deal to keep him at the Wanderers. Young players such as Tomi Juric, Mateo Poljak, Adam D’Apuzzo and Jerome Polenz will also benefit professionally by playing in such a successful team. Club management needs to be proactive and identify a core to work from as the inevitable overseas moves, coaching

resulted in only seven shots on goal last weekend. The Wanderers will emulate the Mariners; keep the ball in front of the defence and draw Adelaide forward as a team so when the ball is turned over attempt to catch them short on the break. Of course this is similar to the basic plan deployed by the Wanderers in many matches last year and will be familiar enough for them to execute expertly. Look for a Wanderers 1-0 victory at home this week. WANDERWORLD | 3

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

JEROME POLENZ

We will raise the bar again JEROME POLENZ STILL FEELS THE PAIN OF LOSING LAST YEAR’S GRAND FINAL, BUT HE’S CONFIDENT THE WANDERERS CAN GO ALL THE WAY THIS SEASON AND RAISE THE TROPHY ON GRAND FINAL DAY...

A

T THE BEGINNING OF the season German import and Wanderers star Jerome Polenz vowed to improve on last season’s goal scoring tally of zero and “score more goals this year”. Well, it didn’t take the 26-year-old very long to make good on that promise after he scored his first goal after 27 games in Wanderers colours in round two against the Wellington Phoenix.

• • • •

Since arriving from Germany in August last year, Polenz has been one of the stars of the ‘Wanderers Show’ and his trademark bandana has made him a fan favourite. His strong defence and brilliant combination with Dutchman Youssouf Hersi was one of the key factors in the Wanderers going from nobodies to Grand Final qualifiers in the space of a few short months. However, that all-important partnership

Service & Repairs Maintenance Air & Water Jets/Blowers Spa Pumps

between Polenz and Hersi would never be tested on one of the biggest days of their careers after the Dutchman was famously suspended from the 2013 decider. Polenz described just how tough it was to not only lose the grand final but to play without his partner in crime. “Of course it hurt us not having Hersi there when you see how well we played together throughout the season on that right flank,” he said. “I was running, Youssouf was on the inside, we were always working together. I think we were the strongest right side in the competition.

“We want to continue that partnership this season and do it better.” But after one of the hardest pre-seasons of his career, two burning questions remain: is the pain of losing the grand final still there and can the Wanderers be even better this season? “We know why we lost. We weren’t at our peak. We had many players that were not fit including me but that’s not an excuse,” he said. “To be honest it was the hardest preseason I’d ever had, much harder than last year but I think we will raise the bar again this year.”

ADAM PEACOCK

Sydney FC on struggle street ADAM Peacock is a respected sports journalist who is currently part of the Fox Sports team covering the 2013/14 A-League season

T

HE WEST SIDE STORY – no point repeating it here. You know it, we know it and 117 decibels of noise last weekend at Allianz Stadium again emphasised it. In every sense, it is a club going in the right direction. And then there is the vanquished. Sydney FC. What has become of Sydney FC? “Who cares!” many readers of this might say, and fair enough. Did Bill Gates have sympathy for Steve Jobs in the 80’s when it went to pot at Apple? Or back to a sporting connotation, say, in baseball: reckon Boston Red Sox fans are crying the New York Yankees missed the playoffs this season?

No, you care not for your rival, only when you meet and then you only care to beat them to smithereens. The Sky Blues are in a dark place, and already drums are beating about the future of Frank Farina, which is awfully harsh. Sydney need a project coach, like Ange, Arnie and the tall bloke who patrols the touchline at Pirtek. If Farina has a project in mind, surely he needs more time to implement it and if he doesn’t – why on Earth did the board let him take over without one? The A-League has moved on from quick fixes. Clubs are talking about setting up academies, creating their own production lines. Central Coast already have – Graham

Arnold has gone on record trumpeting the fact he takes kids in and they leave to become millionaires. Which is fantastic. Of course, bad spells can happen to anyone. Even though it felt longer at the time, Wanderers’ only barren spell was the 289 minutes it took to score a goal at the start of last season. Tony Popovic was assistant coach under Viteslav Lavicka, before going to London to further his education and career back at Crystal Palace. For one reason or another, the hierarchy at Sydney FC ignored their former man when Lavicka departed. It has surely turned into a sleep-depriving “what if” for whoever made that call.

HAPPY WITH DERBY WIN: WANDERERS COACH TONY POPOVIC ADDRESSES THE MEDIA

ATURDAY NIGHT SAW THE Western Sydney Wanderers take on bitter rivals Sydney FC in the hotly anticipated Sydney derby, and the match certainly didn’t disappoint. Both teams looked to leave everything they had on the pitch, much to the delight of the 40,388 fans at the game. The Wanderers got off to the perfect start after Iacopo La Rocca directed a header past Sydney FC goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic to hand the Wanderers a 1-0 lead. The goal came from a typical Shinji Ono delivery, with the marquee man showing his class in a man of the match display. It didn’t take long for Ono to grab one of his own, when he capitalised on some poor defending to direct a half volley into the bottom right corner to hand his side a comfortable 2-0 cushion. The Wanderers didn’t rest on their laurels and continued to look the better of the two sides with Youssouf Hersi narrowly being ruled offside only three minutes later. Sydney were dealt a blow with their marquee man Alessandro Del Piero being

ruled out before the game with injury, and his absence spoke volumes as Sydney really lacked the creative edge needed in the final third. Sydney FC’s best effort came late in the half when former Serbian Under-21 international Nikola Petkovic tested Ante Covic with a long-range free kick that thundered off the crossbar. The only dampener in a near perfect performance was an injury sustained to Youssouf Hersi. Coach Tony Popovic said Hersi would undergo scans after suffering a foot injury that eventually forced him to be substituted at the break for Brendon Santalab. It was the Wanderers’ day however, with Popovic describing the victory as easily his side’s best performance of the season. “Derby days are special and you never know how they’re going to go in terms of performance and form goes out the window,” he said. Popovic also took time to single out the performance of Tomi Juric “He’s a very good player, but his exuberance can take over sometimes,” Popovic said.

Why we love Shinji

W

HAT’S NOT TO LOVE about the little Japanese superstar who loves calling Western Sydney his home? Shinji Ono is by far the Wanderers’ most popular and most sought-after player. Fans love him and his teammates love playing with him. While he may not be the best communicator off the field, he sure does his talking on it and with eight goals in his debut A-League season, it’s quite clear Shinji is the man the Wanderers turn to when times are tough or a goal is desperately needed. Wanderworld photographer Melinda Jane has captured some of Shinji’s most memorable moments in his past two seasons with the Red and Black.

KEEPING UP WITH COVIC

First win was a huge relief GOAL keeper ANTE Covic gives us a player’s perspective on the Western Sydney Wanderers with an exclusive column every single week

I

T WAS HUGE RELIEF to get our first win on the board with a 2-0 victory over Sydney FC last Saturday night. I think during the game we didn’t let our structure down at all, we were disciplined throughout the entire 90 minutes and we were tough moving the ball around. Against Wellington the week before we had a good 25 minutes then we lost our structure and did things off the cuff but I think this week we were a lot more disciplined, we held our shape quite well and we forced a lot of turnovers. We are a team that’s always going to create chances and even when Sydney FC came back at us in the second half by putting more pressure on us we seemed to direct them down a channel where we knew they weren’t going to be dangerous. They really didn’t trouble us in front of goals because we made sure they played in areas of the field that wouldn’t affect us and

that was the most pleasing. The crowd was awesome on Saturday night, thank you to all who came out to support us. There aren’t many clubs around the world who have a select group of fanatical fans that support their team week in week out and we’ve got that with the RBB. To walk out in front of 40,000 people in a regular season game is almost unheard of here in Sydney, in any code. The game was like a carnival atmosphere, everyone got involved and everyone wants to be a part of it, and that was fantastic to see. We are back at Pirtek Stadium this Friday night against Adelaide who are an interesting team this year. They have a very different style of play where their coach wants them to keep the ball moving around, and they do that very well.

54 PEACHTREE ROAD, PENRITH

Their possession rate is always high. They’re playing a more attractive style of football than last year but have run out of legs the last couple of games. I think with our structure and our discipline we can definitely frustrate them. Adelaide are a side who will improve as the year goes on but I don’t think they’re a team we need to be scared of… we don’t fear anybody in this competition. See you at Wanderland for the big game. We always play better when the crowd is behind us.

Do you have a question you would like to ask Ante Covic? We’re opening up the floor to you to ask him the questions you’ve always wanted to know about the Wanderers. Email news@ westernweekender.com.au or post your question to Ask Ante, Suite 2, 42-44 Abel Street Jamisontown NSW 2750.

Wanderers sale could be close WALLY the Wanderer has all the gossip on the Western Sydney Wanderers

I

T SEEMS OUR BELOVED club could be close to striking a takeover deal according to The Australian. No, it isn’t with the Panthers but it’s understood to be with an Asian and Australian consortium. Apparently a group of businessmen have been in talks for a while with the FFA, who currently own the Wanderers franchise, and an agreement could be around the corner. The Asian group, headed by a Chinese businessman, is reportedly already investing in the Wanderers youth development. FFA boss David Gallop later dismissed the report saying “there is no imminent sale of the club”.

Terrible news last week with new W-League Wanderers recruit Kyah Simon suffering an ACL in her right knee, meaning she’ll miss the next 12 months of football. 22-year-old Simon suffered the injury whilst playing for Australia against the USA in San Antonio. “I was looking forward to the season ahead in the W-League with a good group of players at Western Sydney Wanderers. Although I won’t be on the park I will still be involved off-field and will be sure to share my support and knowledge throughout the season”. Get well Kyah!

So our friends at the Socceroos finally have a coach after they named Melbourne Victory mentor Ange Postecoglou the man for the job for the next five seasons. While I wish good old Ange all the best in his role I can’t help but think that five years is a really really long time in football, and unless he has some decent success at next

year’s World Cup, can he really last the full term? I know it’s silly to think about another coach already, but if Tony Popovic continues to do what he’s currently doing with the Wanderers for the next few years, you’d have to think he could very well be the man after Postecoglou. Socceroos superstar Tim Cahill gave Popovic a huge endorsement last week saying he was “unbelievable”. Of course, it probably wouldn’t have been wise to have Popa coach this current term as he’s still quite fresh to the coaching arena but boy I’d love to see him there one day. How good are Wanderers fans? Last month during Western Sydney’s first home game against Wellington, the Red and Black Bloc held a bushfire appeal to raise money for people devastated by the NSW bushfire crisis. Everyone sure dug deep in their pockets and managed to raise a whopping $14,859. In further good news, NRMA Insurance matched that amount dollar-fordollar to bring the grand total to $29,718. This week’s pictured Wanderers fan is Mary Cook from Glenmore Park. If you would like to be pictured in my column, simply send a pic of yourself in your Wanderers gear to news@westernweekender.com.au. The incredible scenes at the Sydney Derby last weekend were brilliant, as was the behaviour of Wanderers fans. It’s been brought into question a bit since Western Sydney entered the comp, but it appears the bad element has been turfed out.
