WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS VS ADELAIDE UNITED KICKOFF: SUNDAY 5PM @ COOPERS STADIUM | TV: FOX SPORTS LIVE 5PM | RADIO: ABC LIVE 5PM

THE WANDERERS AT TRAINING PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

PREVIEW BY ELISHA PEARCE

Wanderers must step up T

HE WANDERERS’ CURRENT FORM confirmed the adage that there are two sides on a coin; there is good and bad, reason for hope and discontent. With a clash against Adelaide looming as the second leg of a quick away swing, the Wanderers’ form on paper seems to be fairly good. The five matches leading up to, and including, the derby netted the side 10 competition points. That’s a solid return; the league leading Brisbane Roar has only managed nine points

season’s promotions, including a 22-pass monster against Melbourne Victory in round 14 that had talking heads in meltdown over Australia’s “Littler Barcelona”. However, their open play has left them vulnerable to losses against the likes of Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets in recent weeks, despite being in fantastic form. On the other hand the Wanderers have built on their solid defensive foundation and used that to stay in the games when their attack becomes disjointed and sporadic.

Wanderers had only scored more than one goal in a game on one occasion out of their last 10 matches going into Tuesday’s match against Melbourne Victory. This is a sign the Wanderers haven’t fixed the attacking problems If the Wanderers are to round into the form needed to chase down the Roar, goalscoring is still the biggest issue that needs to be resolved. Being up only one goal against lower ranked teams week after week leaves too

ends. Ono has been a boom signing for the most recent A-League additions and his presence will be sorely missed. Off the field the blow may be felt financially as Ono would have been a specific fan draw to Pirtek Park during the Asian Champions League matches the Wanderers have scheduled. Fairfax has reported that Ono has been growing homesick because his wife and children are still living in Japan. Obviously, given those circumstances on top of any

“Being up only one goal against lower ranked teams week after week leaves too little room for error” during that same period of play, despite playing with memorable attacking verve and daring. If you were to run the “eye test” over the top two clubs the Roar would easily come out on top at the moment. Their brand of pass-and-move is very pleasing to viewers and provides a symphonic aura that is unique to football. This play has been punctuated by goals that will be used on highlight reels for next

Last week’s Sydney derby was a typical case of the Wanderers doing their best to stay level and scoring an 87th minute goal to snatch three points, arguably against the run of play. No one would call it pretty, but there is a mature campaign strategy at work and the players understand that consistency is vital – this defence has only conceded more than one goal on two occasions this year. The other side to that coin is that the

little room for error. Tony Popovic seems to be working on the creativity of the team in recent times. This showed up in the promotion of Daniel Alessi to the starting 11 last week and due to injury 16-year old Alusine Fofanah is due to make the bench this week. The biggest jolt to hit the club on the field since its inauguration will be the news that Shinji Ono will reportedly return to Japanese club, Consadole Sapporo, after the season

professional reasons, Wanderers fans will greet the great player’s decision with gratitude for his services rendered to a fledgling club. In light of Ono’s impending departure the recent promotion of young talent will likely continue this year in search of another creative outlet for the team. Against Adelaide the side need to explore their creative options in order to build a premiership team. WANDERWORLD | 3

TONY POPOVIC

Poppa smiles after derby win THERE’S VERY FEW THINGS IN FOOTBALL SWEETER THAN WINNING A DERBY, AND WANDERERS COACH TONY POPOVIC WAS THRILLED AFTER HIS SIDE BEAT SYDNEY FC 1-0 LAST WEEK...

T

HE WINNING GOAL MAY have come late, but Wanderers coach Tony Popovic says he didn’t doubt his side’s ability to break the deadlock and win last week’s derby against Sydney FC. Popovic was delighted when Brendon Santalab produced the 86th minute goal to give the Wanderers a 1-0 win. “I didn’t doubt it – football is like that sometimes where you have so many

opportunities and hit the post so many times, but you’ve got to keep believing,” he said after the game. “We defended well, we kept believing that we would get a goal.” Calling it a well deserved win, Popovic was as much relieved as he was delighted after his side’s 3-1 capitulation to Wellington in their previous outing. He was also impressed with the debut of

16-year-old Daniel Alessi, brought into the squad late. “He’s been training with us for a little while now in the first team, or at least since he’s been on school holidays he has,” he said. “He did great and we believe in the kid. “He’s only a 16-year-old boy. I still remember my debut at 16 and I’m sure he’ll never forget this one.” Popovic said the only advice he gave the youngster was to enjoy himself. “I just told him to enjoy it because everyone’s got belief in him,” he said. “I told him to do his job and enjoy the occasion. And he did well.”

Alessi made his debut after Jerome Polenz was hurt at training in the lead-up to the match. The Wanderers had a disrupted preparation for the derby, making the win sweet for Popovic. Popovic wasn’t shying away from his side’s poor performance in their previous encounter against Wellington but said nobody should overreact. “It was probably the worst 25 minutes we’ve shown since we’ve been together, but it was 25 minutes. We’re not talking about four or five games consecutively. We’re talking about a 25 minute period where the opponent punished us,” he said.

A

N A-LEAGUE GRAND FINAL, an Asian Champions League, a World Cup, the start of a new A-League season and an Asian Cup. All of the above – within 12 months. It’s incredible to think of the possibilities for football and those involved in that timeframe. Domestically, the game will continue to grow slowly, barring any catastrophic setback, but really, everything gets laid bare for the general population when the Socceroos play in the big tournaments. Brazil will be massive. The reputation of Ange Postecoglou is on the line in the sense he is seen as a man who can change much in a short space of time.

The challenge in Brazil is he has to do it against the absolute best in the world. Then the Asian Cup – regardless of what happens in Brazil, a competition we are more than capable of winning. The event will be unique and wonderful – Australia loves the very best of anything when it comes to sport and this is it across the region on our doorstep. I’ll be intrigued to see how we embrace the event as a whole – it’ll be only played up and down the Eastern seaboard – events such as these now require the support of state governments, and the NSW one bent over backwards to get the two Semi-finals and Final in this state. The governments of South Australia

and Western Australia didn’t get that keen. Their loss. As for the playing side of things – there’s one man who could play a pivotal part in all of the events I mentioned at the top – and he’s a Wanderer. Matthew Spiranovic. You can now see why Tony Popovic got him back to the A-League. It’s a shame for Michael Beauchamp, who, as Popovic has pointed out, hasn’t done a lot wrong, but Spiranovic has been near faultless during his time on the park in the opening half of the season. If he keeps going this way, he should be on the plane to Brazil, and in a long-winded way, take the place of Beauchamp, who played in the Socceroos’ last World Cup finals match against Serbia in 2010.

LAST WEEK’S ACTION

Late goal sinks SFC WANDERERS 1 SYDNEY FC 0

S

REVIEW BY JUSTIN TODD

TOMI JURIC [FILE PHOTO]

LOWLY TURNING INTO ONE of the fiercest rivalries in Australian sport, the Sydney derby has been a one-way affair of late and the Wanderers were looking to continue their dominance over Sydney FC last Saturday night. The Wanderers started the better of the two teams with striker Tomi Juric looking in top form. The front man fired a long-range strike that forced a terrific save from Sydney FC goalkeeper Janjetovic, who managed to tip the shot onto the post and away for a corner. There seemed to be no containing the threat of Juric, and the 21-year-old came close again to scoring the opener in the 17th minute. A stinging shot on the turn was too hot to handle for Janjetovic, who nearly palmed the ball into his own net. Juric then turned provider slipping past two defenders and angling a ball toward Mark Bridge, but the winger also shared the same misfortune as Juric as he saw his effort deflect off the post. The frame of the goal turned into the Wanderers’ greatest nemesis just before the break. Youssouf Hersi’s ambitious long-range

chip over Janjetovic struck the crossbar, with the rebound somehow striking the crossbar again after Juric opted for power over placement. Sydney FC came out in the second half with much more enthusiasm and intent, and their first real chance came from Terry McFlynn, testing Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic with a fierce drive. That seemed to spark a quiet Alessandro Del Piero into life who fed striker Ranko Despotovic a clever through ball, only to be denied by a lastditch tackle from Matthew Spiranovic who deflected the ball wide. The Wanderers, not content on surrendering any points to their rivals, continued to push on and their moment arrived five minutes from time. Hersi, who more than likely was attempting a shot, will claim an assist as he saw his scuffed effort fall to an unmarked Brendon Santalab who slipped his shot underneath Janjetovic for the winner. The goal means Sydney will remain red and black until the next time the two teams meet, with the Wanderers also closing the gap on Brisbane Roar who dropped points at home to Adelaide United.

Victory eases past our Wanderers WALLY the Wanderer has all the gossip on the Western Sydney Wanderers

W

ELL, THE EUPHORIA FROM the big win in the derby didn’t last long after the Wanderers went down 3-1 to Melbourne Victory in a Tuesday night match this week. The game was evenly poised at 0-all at half-time, but the Victory eventually found their way to the front to lead 2-0 for a big chunk of the second half. The Wanderers scored through Tomi Juric in injury time but it was cancelled out literally seconds later when the Victory scored their third and final goal for the evening. The heat during Tuesday’s game was absolutely ridiculous but Wanderers coach Tony Popovic doesn’t want to use it as an excuse. “The tempo of the game wasn’t great, obviously the conditions were difficult for the players, but we had enough chances in that first half to take the lead,” Popovic said after the game. A stunning 96th minute goal from Michelle Carney enabled the Western Sydney Wanderers to pull off a miracle 1-1 draw with Adelaide United in a W-League thriller at Burton Park last weekend. The girls looked headed for defeat until Carney produced the injury time goal to ensure the Wanderers walked away with a point.

IS AARON MOOY ON THE WAY OUT?

What a tremendous atmosphere at Pirtek Stadium last Saturday night! I want to congratulate the Sydney FC fans because I think they really helped contribute to an amazing night. Police were out in force but it

LUKE PRIDDIS

seems the crowd was generally well behaved with no incidents coming out of the game. Great effort by all! I love a bit of banter between fans but I’ve got some real concerns with one particular Facebook group that has been set up. A page called ‘Wanderers v Sydney Banter Page’ is an absolute disgrace with offensive, racist and disgusting remarks – and all Wanderers fans should call for it to be shut down. Wanderers fans often believe they get a hard time in the media, often declaring themselves as misunderstood. But when you get pages like this being supported by fans and set up by people who suggest they are Wanderers supporters, you can understand why negativity is often attached to the club’s support base. It’s time for the true fans to stand up and call for this stuff to be taken off Facebook. Aaron Mooy (pictured) has stunned Wanderers officials by asking for a transfer. While there’s been a few denials this week, I’m confident that Mooy did indeed go to club officials last week and ask to move on from the club during the January transfer window. Will he end up at the Newcastle Jets? Despite what some were saying, Jerome Polenz wasn’t dropped from last week’s derby. He felt tightness in his hamstring in the last five minutes of training on the eve of the match, and Tony Popovic didn’t want to risk him in such a big match.
