WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS VS CENTRAL COAST MARINERS KICKOFF: SATURDAY 5.30PM @ BLUETONGUE STADIUM | TV: FOX SPORTS LIVE 5.30PM

THE WANDERERS AND MARINERS IN ACTION DURING THE 2012/3 SEASON

PREVIEW BY ELISHA PEARCE

Close battle to open season T

HE A-LEAGUE SEASON KICKS off this weekend and the Western Sydney Wanderers are in the thick of the action with a Grand Final rematch against the Central Coast Mariners. Despite existing for a little over a year, the Wanderers already have an interesting history with the Mariners. On October 6, 2012 the Wanderers played their first ever A-League match and it was against the Mariners on a rainy night in Parramatta.

On Saturday night in Gosford, the Wanderers begin their quest to go one better against the very side that denied them last season. After a wonderful inaugural season for the Wanderers, coach Tony Popovic hasn’t rested on his laurels. A few key signings have been made in an attempt to help the side score more goals. Tomi Juric and Brendan Santalab, two more mobile forwards have been drafted in to replace Dino Kresinger who wasn’t able

He will be expected to retain the same defensive presence at the back while adding some deft passing. During the pre-season – including a successful trip to China and Japan – the Wanderers showed that a rock-solid defence combined with a swift and efficient counterattack will form the basis of their Premiership defence. If anything that counter attack has become more efficient with more movement at striker, overlapping wing backs and

his attacking players might see him included in the Brazil travelling squad. Ono showed his absolute class as the Wanderers’ marquee singing last year with deft touches, sublime passing and willingness to get a shot on goal. With a second year playing in Australia with the same players Ono should be even harder to shut down. All bodes well for an exciting first round to the A-League as the Wanderers travel to Gosford against a strong Mariners team

The Western Sydney Wanderers are $4.25 favourites with TAB Sportsbet to win the 2013/14 Premier’s Plate, with the Mariners next best at $4.50 to win the title Then, after winning the Premier’s Plate and capturing the imagination of the western Sydney region the Wanderers progressed to the Grand Final and found themselves up against that very same Mariners outfit. That Grand Final was a bridge too far for the club in its debut season and the Mariners took home the famed A-League toilet seat trophy. It helped build the start of a healthy rivalry between the two clubs.

to score often enough from the main striker position last season. Defence was an absolute strength of the Wanderers’ season last year but ball distribution was sometimes bogged down and for that reason Matthew Spiranovic has been added to the squad at centre half. Spiranovic is still relatively young at 25, but has already played for the Socceroos 17 times and boasts experience in the German Bundesliga and Japan’s J League.

Youssef Hersi a massive handful on the right edge, as he was last year. In the middle of the field the Wanderers boast Shinji Ono, who has signed an extension and Aaron Mooy in his second year pulling the strings at the club. Mooy in particular will be looking for a big year in the build up to next year’s FIFA World Cup. He’s had some time on the pitch for the Socceroos already and a strong season bossing the midfield and setting up goals for

hoping to begin another Premiership season with a win. The Mariners are very strong at home and obviously will still be riding on the crest of a wave after the Grand Final win of last season. For the Wanderers, who are outsiders for this game with betting agencies, it is an opportunity to show that their first season success was not just pure luck. It’s a chance to show they’re here to make a big impact in the competition. WANDERWORLD | 3

MATTHEW SPIRANOVIC WITH WANDERERS FANS ON MONDAY

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

Spiranovic joins Wanderers LAST MINUTE WANDERERS RECRUIT MATTHEW SPIRANOVIC IS HOPING TO MAKE AN IMPACT ON THE CLUB THIS SEASON, BUT KNOWS HE’S GOT PLENTY OF WORK TO DO TO IMPRESS FANS AND OFFICIALS...

S

OCCEROOS STAR MATTHEW SPIRANOVIC will play in the A-League for the first time in his decorated career this season after inking a deal with the Western Sydney Wanderers last week. The 25-year-old Melbourne-born defender joins the 2012/13 Premier’s Plate winners from Qatar-based club Al Arabi in the Middle East. Following a two week training stint with

the Wanderers in the off-season, Spiranovic realised he belonged in the red and black. “I was recently able to sort out my situation with my previous club and after weighing up all those options both here and overseas, this was the right fit for me,” he said. “I was able to train here for a few weeks when I was sorting out that situation overseas and I really enjoyed my time here.

The club looked after me and I wanted to be a part of it.” Spiranovic hasn’t played with the national side since last year and hoped being back in Australia and part of a successful side like the Wanderers would finally earn him his first World Cup call-up. “The A-League is a tough league because of the quality of players here but I’m sure if I perform well enough I’ll be ready for the World Cup next year,” Spiranovic said. However, Spiranovic knows he won’t just be an automatic selection in coach Tony Popovic’s side come round one but he’s prepared to do what it takes to fight his way

into the line-up. “Last season this club’s defence was great but like any top team or any team that wants to be successful you need competition for spots as well as depth, and with the Asian Champions League next year I’m sure we’ll need a good squad,” he said. Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said the signing of Spiranovic was “very exciting”. “To do well in both competitions this year (A-League and Asian Champions League) we need that depth,” he said. “It’s great to have flexibility. We feel all of our additions this year make us a better squad.”

H

OW DO YOU TOP that? A club out of nothing, to an envied phenomenon. We all know the Western Sydney Wanderers story of last season, which achieved just about everything. All of which has seen the club become THE ticket – the first A-League club to cap their membership (at 16,500) and THE place to be if you want to show a person in Sydney what a real football atmosphere is. Which on the pitch, means? Nothing. Nada. Squat. Zilch. It all starts again. If the season launch is any indication, Wanderers certainly haven’t gone into the stratosphere of their own importance.

The community feel around the club of last season is still very much at the forefront, with players putting on a training session in front of members and club sponsors. Autographs given, photos taken, kids everywhere. A great vibe. Speaking with Tony Popovic, he seemed at ease with the pre-season just gone, and given the fabled groundwork carried out before a ball was kicked last season, it bodes well. He knows though, like many, this competition is so tight, a lack of luck mixed with the wrong injuries to the wrong players has you pondering where it has all gone wrong very quickly. Honestly, looking at the 10 teams, it is so

difficult to have definitive confidence about any of them. All you can really do is rely on previous seasons and the track record of coaches and players in this league over that time. It puts Wanderers, Central Coast, Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar (who have been destroying teams in pre-season) in a really good place. The Wanderers, through the success of last season and incumbents just wanting more learning under Popovic, have had a really low turnover of players. The whole comp promises to be every bit as exciting, dramatic and brilliant as last season. We can’t wait. Hope you can join us for the ride on Fox Sports.

Wanderers visit Penrith

A

S PART OF THEIR pre-season build-up, the Western Sydney Wanderers visited Penrith Stadium for the first time to play a pre-season trial against Adelaide last month. The game finished in a 1-all draw but a healthy crowd of over 7,000 helped create a magical atmosphere on the day. Whilst the Wanderers continue to play home matches out of Parramatta Stadium, they hope to continue to build support right across the western Sydney region that they represent, including here in Penrith. The Wanderers have a strong fan base

in Penrith, and that was evident with such a big crowd on hand for a game that was essentially worthless in terms of competition points and stature. At a corporate function held before the game, Wanderers boss Lyall Gorman said he hoped the club would again visit Penrith Stadium in the future. Despite crowd issues in the past, a heavy police presence and scorching hot weather, the crowd was exceptionally well behaved and soaked up the atmosphere as the new A-League season crept closer and closer to reality.

New partners join the Wanderers WALLY the Wanderer has all the gossip on the Western Sydney Wanderers

T

HE WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS have done incredibly well this past off-season to not only boost their membership numbers but to acquire new commercial and business partners. The latest to jump on board the Wanderers bandwagon is InsideOut Football who provide their customers with world class artificial football fields that can be used in all weather, any time of the year. Welcome aboard guys! Expect a heavy police presence at Parramatta Stadium this year as the club aims to clean up its image after a few ugly scenes at the ground last year. With bigger crowds expected at ‘Wanderland’ in 2013/14, it’s understood more police will be on hand to stamp out flares and unruly crowd behaviour which caused a couple of unwanted headlines last season. My arch nemesis The Masked Panther has already been banned, I hear!

WANDERERS PLAYERS SIGN AUTOGRAPHS AT A FAN DAY AT PARRAMATTA ON MONDAY

NRL bosses must be secretly crying in a corner at Rugby League Central in Moore Park over how good former NRL CEO David Gallop is doing at the helm of Football Federation Australia. Gallop, who’s entering his second A-League season in charge of the FFA, has so far done a remarkable job in boosting the profile of the game as well as keeping its star players in check off the field. While over in rugby league world the NRL is having a hard time getting their CEO Dave Smith to remember who the game’s star players are. Go figure! Well done David, you’re good at it (any free tickets?).

LUKE PRIDDIS

If you haven’t got your new Wanderers supporters gear for the upcoming season you may be the odd one out. The Daily Telegraph revealed last week that the Wanderers originally budgeted just $300,000 in revenue from over-the-counter merchandise sales at matches and events but by the end of their hugely successful debut season that figure totalled a whopping $1.8 million. A few months ago Nike released an updated version of the Wanderers jersey for the new season which has been selling like hot cakes. It’s been a busy transfer period in the A-League off-season with more than 100 players relocating to new clubs in 2013/14. The Wanderers are just one of the clubs in the thick of the action with five players from last season moving on including Tarek Elrich (Adelaide United), Joey Gibbs (Newcastle Jets), Reece Caira (Wellington Phoenix), Rocky Visconte (Suphanburi, Thailand) and Dino Kresinger (Zavrc, Slovenia). However, six new players will join the club for the first time including Matthew Spiranovic (AlArabi, Qatar), Dean Heffernan (Perth Glory), Tomi Juric (Adelaide United), Brendon Santalab (Chongqing Lifan, China), John Barresi (elevated from youth side) and Yianni Perkatis (elevated from youth side). Some great news this week with confirmation that the ABC will broadcast all A-League matches this year on radio and online. This is a huge step forward for broadcasting of the great game.

Who do we sing for?

I

STORY BY JUSTIN TODD

T IS THAT TIME of the year again. The long off-season has come to an end, and the players’ hard work for months is finally going to be put on show on the big stage. On everyone’s lips this season will be whether or not the Wanderers can match or even better their amazing entry into the A-League last season. I don’t see any reason why they can’t. The off-season has been an impressive one, addressing key areas and re-signing many key players to new deals. If they were lacking anything last season it was a goal scorer. Whilst Dino Kresinger was a fan’s favourite and gave his all every game, he simply lacked that cutting edge in front of goal. The additions of Brendon Santalab and Tomi Juric is a shrewd bit of business, and in my opinion will give the Wanderers another dimension in attack. Another key area that has been strengthened is defence with the brilliant additions of Dean Heffernan and Matthew Spiranovic. Whilst the Wanderers’ defence was impeccable last season, their depth was not great and with the addition of the Asian Champions League adding more matches,

the Wanderers can now afford to rotate and give a rest to Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Michael Beauchamp. Key Player: The usual suspects Shinji Ono, Aaron Mooy and Youssouf Hersi would be most fans’ picks, however I can’t go past Tomi Juric. If he is in form and fires, so much pressure will be taken off the likes of Ono and Bridge to provide goals. My prediction: I have always said consistency is key to backing up a successful season. Wanderers have kept basically the same line-up, with more depth likely to lift the performances of their seasoned campaigners. Selling-out all memberships is fantastic news for the club and the A-League, and I personally can’t wait to get back to Wanderland and soak up the atmosphere. I think they will narrowly finish 2nd, but go one better this season and win the grand final. However, who would dare say they couldn’t produce the double?

Justin Todd will be part of our team this season, looking back at last weekend’s action with a comprehensive match report.

Coach eyes top prize WANDERERS COACH TONY POPOVIC SAYS HIS SIDE NEEDS TO SHOW CONSISTENCY THIS SEASON IF IT IS TO THREATEN FOR ANOTHER PREMIER’S PLATE AND A HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER GRAND FINAL WIN...

T

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

THE WANDERERS GATHER FOR THEIR ‘FAMILY PHOTO’ ON MONDAY

HIS YEAR THE WESTERN Sydney Wanderers are no longer the new kids on the block, instead they go into this season as the team to beat after wowing the A-League last year. The Central Coast Mariners may have claimed A-League’s biggest prize with a Grand Final victory over the Wanderers back in April but rival teams know if they want to challenge for a title in season 2013/14 they need to ďŹ gure out how to match the impressiveness that is Western Sydney. Speaking with Wanderworld at the club’s season launch on Monday, Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said consistency was the key. “We had a fantastic year last year and to be consistent we have to at least be able to challenge for honours and to challenge for honours we have to make the top six or to have a better chance we have to ďŹ nish in the top four,â€? he said. “If we want to be a consistent club that’s something we have to strive for.â€?

After falling agonisingly short of a fairytale ďŹ nish last season, the Wanderers know there is still plenty of room for improvement and will again base their game plans this season around their biggest strength: defence. “I think defence is crucial in anyone’s team, you can win games with your attack but defence gives you a chance at winning championships,â€? Popovic said. “We had fantastic defence last year and I think the whole team defended well, it’s certainly something we’ll have to do again if we want to challenge.â€? Popovic admitted he hadn’t spent the entire off-season working out how to beat the Mariners in the opening round but was conďŹ dent his side will get the three points. “It’s only our ďŹ rst game of the season and it’ll be a great game with another huge crowd with fantastic support,â€? he said. “We go into the game ďŹ t and healthy, and we are already forming a great rivalry amongst ourselves.â€? he said.
