U

nfortunately serious health concerns are an unpleasant reality that we all have to deal with

in life.

The financial implications of critical illness are understandably not the most important consideration at these times, but can be crippling in their own right.

Apart from the loss of income resulting from not being able to work due to serious illness, the medical costs, even with health insurance, can be very high.

While many people walk away from a stroke in relatively good health, The North East Melbourne Stoke Incidence Study (NEMSIS) indicated that 42.1 per cent of stroke sufferers had some form of disability as a result.

12 per cent of stroke survivors are required to live in cared accommodation and a further 25 per cent required help with

self-care. 85 per cent required ongoing physiotherapy and/or occupational therapy and 35 per cent require speech therapy.

All this treatment obviously costs a lot of money, even with medical insurance.

NEMSIS calculated that the average “out of pocket” costs for a stroke are $18,956 in the first year and $44,428 over a lifetime.

Although many stroke sufferers are fortunate enough to incur very few costs, about a third of stroke survivors incur lifetime costs of over $100,000.

According to economic powerhouse, Deloittes, the medical costs of living with Parkinsons is approximately $144,000 over the course of the disease.

On average, it costs about $1,000 per month for someone with Multiple Sclerosis and Muscular Dystrophy medical costs are estimated at $144,000 per year.

These sorts of medical costs are enough to break most people, and it does.

In 2014, 62 per cent of all personal bankruptcies in Australia were due to medical costs.

78 per cent of these people had health insurance. That is a scary thought!

What is a split home loan?

A

split loan is as simple as dividing your loan into two or more loans for the purpose of having different features on each split, or tracking and separating money used for a specific purpose, like investing or a car purchase.

For example, say you have a loan of $400,000, you could consider splitting the loan with $100,000 kept variable for flexibility and to be able to use an offset account; and the balance of the loan fixed to protect you against interest rate rises.

A simple strategy like this can give you the feeling of security around your repayments whilst at the same time keeping the flexibility of making extra repayments and redraw with the variable portion.

I have even seen this done where a smaller portion is split from the main loan so you can

focus on really knocking this portion off quickly – then moving money over into the main split and doing it again – purely for the psychological benefit of watching a smaller balance disappear in a really quick time frame. What I mean by this is making a $10,000 or a $30,000 split and paying this off in two or three years, rinse and repeat. Of course you could pay the same money into your main loan with the same effect but there is something powerfully motivating about seeing the loan being paid off.

I mentioned above that you could also have a split that was used for a specific purpose, say to purchase a car at home loan interest rates, and you don’t want to pay this portion of the loan for the rest of 30 years when you will only own the car for 5-10 in most cases.

This is probably one of only two reasons I would advocate putting

a car into your home loan and this strategy works if you focus on paying this split off over the next few years.

Investors also benefit from splitting their loan so interest that can be claimed on an investment property is clear and separate from your home loan interest.

Venom is highly toxic. Wear shoes in the yard and gloves when gardening. Stand clear.

Apply a pressure bandage, immobilise and get to a hospital fast. Treatment includes antivenom, admission to a critical care area and monitoring for 12-24 hours until all evidence of envenoming has resolved.

Red-Back Spider

In case of bite

Female to 14mm. Male to 3mm.

Builds a web often found under outdoor furniture, logs and rubbish. Look first and wear gloves. Stay clear.

Pressure bandaging is contraindicated in Red-back spider bites and get to a hospital fast. Treatment may include antivenom depending on severity.

White-Tail Spider

In case of bite

Female to 20mm. Male to 12mm.

Ground dwelling and active in the garden, under bark, rocks but will wander indoors. Can get caught in unattended bedding, clothes or shoes. Look first.

Stand clear.

Bites cause pain, and some bites will leave a persistent red mark, associated itchiness and pain or lump lasting up to a week. Current evidence suggests that spider bites are very unlikely to cause necrotic lesions as commonly believed and such cases presenting as suspected spider bites should be thoroughly investigated for other causes.
