Marrickville Festival to take over local streets

M

arrickville will become party headquarters this Sunday when the annual Marrickville Festival is held, sending our city into a world of fun.

Thousands will attend the event on Illawarra Road and Marrickville Road, and will soak up plenty of great entertainment, food and events.

Performers of spoken word, poetry, soul, magic and comedy will appear on the ‘War of Words’ stage at the Festival, which kicks off at 11am.

The animated Pterodactyl man will kick off the entertainment, and a selection of eclectic local poets and special guests from the monthly spoken word night Bonfi re @ Desire, will then take to the stage.

Behind the Front will present Women in Soul Music and Poetics, which features some of the fi nest soul acts in Sydney such as Alphamama, Mirrah Reflects and Lalia Blake. Aregradah from Radio Skid Row’s Black Symbol Show will also DJ some great dub and reggae tunes.

Aspiring poets can register on the day for the Australian Poetry Slam, and perform for a chance to win cash prizes and a place in the state fi nal.

Be entertained by the 2012 World Cup Poetry Winner, Candy Royalle, as she combines the written word with theatrics and vocal harmonies.

The dynamic duo, Bannister & Asixx, mix magic and comedy for a performance the kids will enjoy. Local comedian Seizure Kaiser will also entertain. There’s also live street art from Chris Tamm, as well as roving magicians throughout the day.

Mayor of Marrickville, Victor Macri, said the War of Words stage will showcase a host of creative performers.

“Our community is home to talented artists, poets, comedians and musicians, and this Festival highlights just a sample of what Marrickville’s creative community has to offer,” Cr Macri said.

Th is year’s Marrickville Festival will feature a host of live music, including young up and coming bands on The Break stage, an International Dance Floor, and plenty of entertainment at the Kid’s Play Park. Kids will also enjoy soccer activities with the Stanmore Hawks and heritage games.

ight that’s it. I am not whinging anymore. No complaints about being over tired, working weekends or my football team getting beaten.

And I don’t want to hear a single person complain they hate their boss or the kids make them cranky.

Because this week I again realised how trivial all of these complaints are.

That some people would be happy to be over tired or over worked, even do that dreaded basket of ironing – if it meant they could be healthy. All too often we get swept up in our own hectic lives and forget just how tough life is for some people.

How unfair and cruel cancer can be.

How a person’s life can literally change with one test result or one shooting pain down their shoulder. Th is week at ‘A

Current Affair’ I met a beautiful, young lady called Natalie who at 33-years of age is battling ovarian cancer for the second time.

She beat it five years ago but this time even surgery isn’t an option. The single mum, a police officer of 10 years, showed me that every day of good health should be treated as a privilege not an expectation. Because you just never know when cancer will strike – it is an evil disease that can prey on anyone, no matter their age, gender or fi nancial status. These days cancer seems to be more common and widespread than ever.

Everyone you talk to knows at least someone who has been diagnosed with cancer. Th is month I also met three brave ladies who survived breast cancer.

Again their courage was something

to be admired. All three wanted to be interviewed not for their own personal gain but to help others. To make fellow women pay attention to their own health and discover if they’re overdue for a medical checkup.

Because the other major thing I learnt from talking to these four amazing, inspiring women it’s that early detection makes all the difference. If you do fi nd cancer, in the majority of cases it can be treated if it’s identified early.

So I ask you to join me in a tribute to these very brave women. If you’re a woman please make sure your breast examinations and pap smears aren’t overdue. And if they are make an appointment TODAY. And if you’re a man – ask your mother, sister, girlfriend or wife. Because it really can be the difference between life and death.

SW Premier Barry O’Farrell has written to the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, seeking matching Federal funding for the WestConnex motorway project that will ease traffic congestion and create jobs in the inner west.

The WestConnex motorway emerged as the key infrastructure project from a report by Infrastructure NSW. The 33 kilometre motorway will link Western Sydney with the airport and the Port Botany precinct, and will include the M4 extension and duplication of the M5 East to King Georges Road.

“WestConnex, together with the North West Rail Link, are the two largest transport infrastructure projects in the country,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“I call on Julia Gillard and Anthony Albanese to fi nally deliver for Sydney and match the NSW Government commitment of $1.8 billion for WestConnex.

“The more federal funding we attract for this project, the lower the toll.”

Federal Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott, has already earmarked the project for funding if elected in the next Federal election.

“The Federal Government’s own figures show congestion costs NSW around $4 billion per year. If the Federal Government is fair dinkum about jobs, growth improving peoples’ lives, they’ll get on board and fund this project.”

NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell wants matching Federal funding for the WestConnex motorway.

ver 1,000 protestors took to Sydney Park, St Peters last weekend to express their concerns with coal seam gas mining – sending a very visual message to gas exploration companies and the State Government.

Holding bold, yellow ‘Stop Coal Seam Gas’ signs, inner city locals took advantage of the sun and clear skies last Saturday [October 13] to send a potent message in the form a human sign, reading “Stop CSG” that could be seen hundreds of metres above the ground.

Event organiser for Stop CSG Sydney, Sandy Thompson, said that a lot of preparation went into organising the human sign, which was a huge success.

“We were really pleased with the number of people that turned out to be part of the human sign,” she said.

“More and more we are seeing people become aware of the threat of coal seam gas. Originally it started due to the threat in Petersham, but now with coal seam gas threatening Warragamba and really the entire Sydney basin, we are seeing people from all over Sydney expressing their concern.

The protest was to kick-start a whole week of national action against coal

seam gas exploration and mining by the Lock the Gate Alliance, an activist group determined to stop coal seam gas mining.

“We are looking at evidence that does not show coal seam gas is safe – on the contrary there is a lot of evidence

to suggest that it is very unsafe,” Ms Thompson said.

3,000 people marched against coal seam gas in the NSW coastal town of Murwillumbah last weekend and a human sign will also be made in Bulli on Sunday.

The GreenWay is a five kilometre green corridor that links the Cooks River to Sydney Harbour at Iron Cove and has been recognised as a key transport ‘missing link’ in the inner west.

Masked men came knocking: Police seek identity About 3am on Tuesday, October 16, a shop attendant of a petrol station on Parramatta Road, Lewisham called police after seeing two masked men kicking and throwing rocks at the front glass doors in an attempt to gain entry. Between 12.30am and 5.30am on October 15, an unknown offender has gained entry into the premises by removing the steel grill on the ground floor window with a hammer and climbing through the closed but unlocked window. hree local carers were among 60 from around the State to be recognised this week for the time and effort they put in to caring for others.

Marrickville’s Christina Keramidas was presented with a 2012 Local Carers Award Certificate by MP, Carmel Tebbutt, at a special morning tea on Monday.

Ms Tebbutt said Ms Keramidas, who cares for her adult son, John, was one of the “quiet achievers” in

our community and deserved to be recognised by such an award.

“Carers make a vital social and economic contribution to our society,” Ms Tebbutt said. “[They] often do not receive recognition for their many hours of care and support and the valuable role they play.”

Two other women – Sia Stratikopoulos and Pilar Perez – were also presented with Local Carers Award Nominee Certificates.

Lucky catch: No bike helmet undoes wanted man

Mrs Perez, 80, cares for her son, Alfonzo, who lives alone and suffers from Parkinson’s disease and has an intellectual disability.

The awards, an initiative of the NSW Government, are presented to individuals or organisations that have made a significant contribution to the community through their role as carers.

Police have arrested a man who allegedly demanded property from two bus passengers with the intent to steal it after initially stopping him for not wearing a bike helmet. On october 7, two bus passengers were travelling from Central towards Eastgardens when a man demanded money from them. The victims handed it over and the offender alighted the bus. On october 12, Marrickville Police stopped a 26-year-old man from Darling Point after he was seen riding his bicycle without a helmet. Further checks were conducted, which revealed the man was wanted by Maroubra Police for the offence on the bus. Marrickville Police searched the man and a number of items believed to be stolen, a fl ick style knife as well as several small packages containing an unknown white crystal substance which was concealed in the man’s underwear. He was refused bail and will appeared at Newtown Local Court on October 16.

t was a controversial rally over the carbon tax, but for all the wrong reasons.

When 300 anti-carbon tax protestors descended on MP for Grayndler, Anthony Albanese’s office on September 1 of last year, Marrickville Road came to a standstill and police called in to control the situation.

Over a year later and the carbon tax now implemented,

Mr Albanese yesterday said that there was “nothing mainstream” about the anti-carbon tax demonstration.

“The demonstration required significant Australian Federal Police resources and was characterised by jostling and placards depicting the Prime Minister as a dog, another depicting the Prime Minister ‘hogtied’ and slogans such as

‘Tolerance is our Demise’,” he said.

“A coffi n was given prominence at the front of the activities. There was nothing “mainstream” about this demonstration.”

Mr Albanese was responding to comments from Liberal MP, Sophie Mirabella, that Labor Party members are unused to “mainstream Australians” protesting.

Funding of up to $5,000 is available for cultural events and activities to be held as part of Open Marrickville 2013. Worried about acne Q. I get outbreaks of pimples before my period. I’ve tried all sorts of skincare products but nothing helps. What else can I do?

A. No cream will fi x acne. The underlying causes need to be addressed before you will get long lasting results.

The current theory is that acne is caused by an increase in the potent male hormone dihydrotestosterone, which is derived from testosterone.

In the magnificent city of Sydney we are fortunate enough to be more than spoilt for choice when it comes to good food. So how can it be that so many people are displaying symptoms of nutritional deficiencies similar to those seen in third world nations?

Take protein for example, it is one of the most basic dietary requirements of humans and even though protein is readily available in large quantities we are still seeing people suffer from protein deficiencies. Protein deficiency can be a very serious issue and is associated with millions of deaths every year.

But this is no need for alarm because we have many good sources of protein.

For some people that might be a big juicy steak or a delicious piece of chicken. But what if you’re a vegan or vegetarian? They know just how hard it can be to fi nd good sources of non-meat based protein in a large enough volume to support your daily requirements.

Vegetarians can receive all their daily protein needs from plants, although it can often be a less dense or incomplete source of protein than that

sourced from meat.

Meaning that as a vegetarian, you need to consume more protein rich plants to receive the same amount of complete protein.

Because of this vegetarians can be more likely to suffer from protein and also vitamin B12 deficiencies, however not all vegetarians are protein deficient.

However those with an unbalanced diet that doesn’t include enough plant protein often are. Most people with protein deficiencies won’t even recognise it as being an issue because the symptoms of protein deficiency are similar to many other ailments.

So what are the symptoms of being protein deficient? Weight loss, nausea and slow healing wounds may be signs that you are protein deficient. And if having skin rashes, thinning hair, feeling weak and lacking energy doesn’t appeal to you maybe you should be eating more protein. So if you are a vegetarian and are experiencing any of the issues above you may need to review your nutritional intake.

W

hen she starred in ‘Wicked’ as Glinda a few years ago, many in Australia said it was the role that Lucy Durack was born to play.

Perhaps such roles do indeed come around twice, because Durack delivers a knockout performance in ‘Legally Blonde’ as Elle Woods, a role that it would be hard to imagine any other Australian female theatre performer playing.

For those who’ve seen the film, the storyline is much the same on stage, except, of course, that there’s plenty of songs thrown in.

Party girl Elle, whose biggest concern in life is what dress she’s planning to wear on the weekend or if her lipstick is looking as perfect as it should, loses her boyfriend Warner, played by the enigmatic Rob Mills, who has emerged as a quality theatre talent in recent years despite coming through the often frowned upon world of reality television.

In an effort to win him back, Elle decides to become “serious”, and switches cocktails for books, finding her way to Harvard University alongside her beau.

What ensues is Elle’s hilarious efforts to win Warner back, and her emergence as a totally different person to the one she was at home.

As her “serious” side kicks in, she quickly realises that perhaps Warner wasn’t what she wanted after all.

‘Legally Blonde’ is far from Shakespeare. It should never be looked at as serious theatre with hidden messages, but simply a fun night out with plenty of laughs.

Lucy Durack puts together a stellar performance in ‘Legally Blonde’.

The best thing about that is, that the cast knows the deal.

They don’t take it too seriously, they know what it is and that’s an important element in any show that requires its audience to feel relaxed and comfortable.

Durack is superb, she is barely off the stage and delivers not only vocally, but also in the high-energy dance numbers, hardly what she’s known for.

And for those blokes getting dragged along by their partners, it doesn’t hurt that she’s stunningly beautiful, either.

Mills, too, is a highlight, he struggled in some of his earlier theatre roles to be all that convincing but this is his best effort to date, and he bounces off Durack well.

But the show is almost stolen by a well known Australian on her major theatre debut in Erika Heynatz.

Far from the traditional TV star that has been thrown into the show for ticket sales, Heynatz is brilliant and delivers a knockout performance, particularly in the second act.

ad news last week with the announcement that Walkley Award winner and Nine News favourite, Peter Harvey, is battling pancreatic cancer.

Since joining the Nine Network in 1975, Harvey has worked tirelessly on a number of programs including Nine News and ‘60 Minutes’. Earlier this year, Harvey paid a visit to the Weekender office to give advice to our team of journalists, including myself, about the media industry. We wish him all the best for a speedy recovery.

FOX8 show ‘The Secret Life of an American Teenager’ has been given its marching orders by its American network, ABC Family. The series will conclude after its fifth season next year. Series five

begins in the US in March and soon after in Australia.

More FOX8 news, with Donald Trump announcing the cast of the latest edition of ‘Celebrity Apprentice’. This season will see favourite celebrities from past series do battle in an ‘All-Stars’ version of the show. Celebrities chosen to return include country music star Trace Adkins, actors Stephen Baldwin and Gary Busey, magician Penn Jillette, rap star Lil Jon, ex-NBA star Dennis Rodman, Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider, actress Marilu Henner, singer La Toya Jackson, TV personality Claudia Jordan, reality star Omarosa, author Lisa Rinna, Playboy ‘Playmate of the Year’ Brande Roderick and Poison frontman Bret Michaels. The series will premiere next year.

Channel Seven legal drama ‘Suits’ has been renewed for a third season.

USA Network co-presidents Jeff Wachtel and Chris McCumber said in a statement: “Quite simply, ‘Suits’ is as good as it gets.

Sophisticated storytelling, sharp dialogue, and award-worthy performances make this show a cornerstone of our original programing lineup”.

Lastly, details of the remaining weeks of ‘Big Brother’ have been released by Nine. Even though there are still eight people left in the house there are just three weeks remaining, which means mass evictions are on the cards. The final week will begin with six housemates. Following an eviction and double eviction, a daily show is scheduled for November 6 before the winner is crowned on November 7.

‘Glee’ returns to Ten on Wednesday, October 24 at 7.30pm. In some exciting news for Aussie fans of the show, this season will feature the debut of former ‘Australian Idol’, ‘Neighbours’ and ‘Terra Nova’ hunk, Dean Geyer. Geyer has done remarkably well since moving to Hollywood a few years back but ‘Glee’ will no doubt propel him to the big stage as I’m sure it will take advantage of his many talents.

oughly 60 enthusiastic kids from Marrickville West Primary School unleashed their inner Tiger Woods on Monday when they took part in a golf skills day at the Marrickville Golf Club.

The all-day program was put together by the Jack Newton Golf Foundation, who are responsible for encouraging primary school aged children to develop their golfi ng skills and interest in the lucrative sport.

Lyndall Hough, director of Marrickville Golf Club, said it was a wonderful event and refreshing to see so many kids interested in golf.

“Our aim was to get as many young kids as possible with a club in their hand and interested in golf,” she said.

“It was great to see the kids improving right throughout the day. There was a lot of enthusiasm with plenty of kids asking their parents if they could come back and do it again.”

During the day the Year Five and Year Six students participated in four skills-based activities including putting, chipping, driving and a three-round mini game.

They were given constructive advice by professional golfers.

Kids received points based on their efforts in each activity with the top three placed male and female students receiving gift packs while others took home participation certificates.

ydney FC’s Youth team has produced a remarkable comeback to qualify for the fi nal stages of the Vietnam International Youth tournament in Pleiku.

The Sky Blues defeated Laos Under 21’s 2-1 with a goal in the fi nal minutes of the match, which was played earlier this week.

Sydney began the stronger of the two sides with Alec Urosevski causing problems for Laos’ defence.

Winger, Tom Slater, was next to threaten, beating two men on the left and producing a dangerous cross that the centre half cleared under the nose of frontman, Nikola Taneski. It was all Sydney, but against the run of play, Laos scored 26 minutes in.

After the second half got off to a slow start, Luke Clifford did well down the left wing, with his cross met perfectly on the volley by 17-year-old Christopher Naumoff, who drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

With five minutes remaining, a fi ngertip save from Ryan Norval kept Sydney level and then with two minutes on the clock, Naumoff delivered a free kick from the right, which Josh MacDonald headed home from close range to seal the victory.

Sydney FC will play a semi-fi nal match tonight, and if they are successful will head into the fi nal on Sunday evening.
