hen Stanmore bus driver Jeff Turner lost his wife Gayle to cancer in 2005, he vowed to do something positive in her honour to help conquer cancer in all its forms. He’d met Ms Turner-Edwards in 2002 after their online dating profi les matched on RSVP, but two weeks after their fi rst date, Jeff realised Gayle was constantly in pain and suffering from cancer. “I basically marched her off to the doctor,” Mr Turner said. “After a couple more weeks, she started to lose control of her right side, which started to happen quite quickly.” Determined to stay together, the pair married in August 2004 but just shy of their 12-month anniversary, in August 2005, Gayle lost her fight. After Gayle passed, Mr Turner, 59, heard of the mission of brain surgeon Professor Chris O’Brien, who was battling a brain tumour himself, and his dream in his fi nal years to establish a world-class Lifehouse cancer centre for Sydney’s cancer sufferers, their families and their carers. From October 13-14, Mr Turner put his foot to the pedal and cycled with 1,623 other participants who have been touched by cancer a total of 200km from Homebush to Camden and back again for the inaugural Sunsuper Ride to Conquer Cancer. Funds raised from the 200km ride will be used towards the construction and operating costs for Camperdown’s Lifehouse Sydney Cancer Centre. Mr Turner said he raised more than $3,000 on the day as an individual, with the total raised across the two-day event counted at $5.7 million. “Apparently it’s an Australian record for a single event for a single charity.” He said the centre would encompass everything under one roof, including world class and cutting edge research and care, training programs for doctors on how to pass on news about terminal cancer to patients with sensitivity, counseling for carers of people with cancer and information about alternative therapies. “People who have suffered cancer wore yellow flags, so they either have it, had it or they’re in

SPIDER SEASON As the weather warms up and we spend more time in the garden, residents are being warned to brush up on their fi rst aid. Spider bites are more common in summer and knowing how to deal with a spider bite in an emergency can make all the difference. Just last week a boy was treated for a red back spider bite.

ocal avian lover Melissa Mason of the Tempe Birdos group spotted the fi rst swamp harrier at Tempe Lands on Sunday since bird monitoring began at the reconstructed wetlands in November last year. “I was just walking along and saw this harrier. I took so many photos,” Ms Mason said. “They’ve just got this very lazy flap,” she said of the bird of prey. “I got a bit worried for all the little ducklings that are in the ponds at the moment.” But the Marrickville resident said it felt great to see new species appearing at the site since its rejuvenation, once home to the former Tempe Tip and now 10 hectares of reconstructed parkland and wetlands. “A really low number of these birds are ferals,” she said of the 53 species monitored at the site so far. Ms Mason said the site provides birds with a variety of habitats, including scrub, heath and casuarina forest, which allows for a variety of birdlife. Some of the birds sighted and recorded by the group so far include an Australian pelican in July, a brown goshawk in early April and a channel-billed cuckoo in November last year. Tempe Birdos have also spotted kookaburras, silver gulls, little black cormorants, and a white-faced heron. “We’re collecting public data, it’s

Raw data from Tempe Birdos, collected using a consistent survey methodology over the last 12 months, is available online on the Atlas of Living Australia website, which contains information on all known species in Australia aggregated from a wide range of sources. In November last year, Marrickville Council held a birds and bush day at the site and conducted the fi rst birdlife survey, with Tempe Birdos formed soon

Teacher arrested Police from Marrickville Local Area Command have arrested a female teacher over the alleged sexual assault of a male student back in 2005. Marrickville Police commenced an investigation into the woman after allegations of sexual assault against the male student, in Year 12 at the time, surfaced in 2005. The woman was a teacher in the local area at the time that the incidents allegedly occured. After seven years of investigations, police acted on the allegations this week. On Tuesday, November 27, police executed a search warrant at the woman’s home in Sydney’s west. Officers seized a number of exhibits as a result of that search. The woman, now 29-years-old, was taken to Ryde Police Station where she was charged with three counts of sexual intercourse with a person under care. She was granted bail to appear at Newtown Local Court on December 18, 2012. Investigations into the incident are continuing. Anyone with information about this incident should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: www1.police.nsw.gov.au. All information provided to police will be treated in the strictest of confidence. after. By February this year, the surveys became a monthly occurrence, with help from members of Marrickville Council’s biodiversity unit. Tempe Birdos monitor the birdlife on the site on the second Saturday of every month, with the next meeting on December 8, 2012. Ms Mason encouraged people to turn up on December 8 or contact the group on its Facebook page.

Tougher bail laws The NSW Government will introduce a new, simpler Bail Act that aims to achieve greater consistency by removing complexities such as the presumptions scheme, which have led to so many bail decisions that confound the community. The State Government plans to introduce the new Bail Act into Parliament next year. It is due to commence operation in 2014, allowing time to adequately train local police bail sergeants, magistrates and judges, including those of Newtown Local Court, and to give legal practitioners enough time to become familiar with the new reforms. “We have all been left scratching our heads from time to time about the inconsistency in which the current bail law is applied,” NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell said. “The new, simpler bail law will be applied consistently by police bail sergeants, magistrates and judges – this means police and legal resources can be focused on catching and prosecuting criminals. “Accused criminals who pose a serious risk to community safety or are likely to commit further crimes will not get bail under this model.” Under the current law, decisions about bail are made based on the offence a person has been charged with – not the risk they pose to the community. The new Bail Act is the NSW Government’s repsonse to the Law Reform Commission’s review of the Bail Act, which found that the law is confusing for both citizens and law practitioners.

Policy will combat “scourge” of asbestos-related diseases

A

VANESSA WATSON

model asbestos policy for NSW councils was launched at Marrickville Council’s Petersham chambers by Local Government Minister Don Page on Monday. The policy, unveiled on the fi rst day of Asbestos Awareness Week (November 26 to 30), will see councils update their asbestos policies across the state or require them to implement compliant policies if local plans are yet to be developed. Minister Page described the policy and supplementary guide as impressive and comprehensive and commended those involved in its development. “Home renovations are continuing to increase nationally so the importance of the dangers and risks of asbestos cannot be over stated,” he said. “Australia and the United Kingdom have the highest rates of asbestos-related deaths in the world. “The Model Asbestos Policy for NSW will assist councils to develop a comprehensive and compliant asbestos policy for their local area.” Marrickville Mayor Victor Macri said he was proud Marrickville Council hosted the launch of such a “milestone” policy, which he said would contribute to fighting the “scourge” of asbestos-related diseases in Australia. “One in three homes contain asbestos and that’s quite amazing,” Cr Macri said.

“It’s of particular interest to Marrickville residents because of the high level of older dwellings being renovated in our local government area. Marrickville is going through a rejuvenation and we are the flavour of the month at the moment.” Cr Macri urged DIY renovators to call for expert help when they fi nd materials that could contain asbestos instead of handling it themselves. “They are potentially putting themselves at risk, and not just them, their families, their neighbours and the wider community.” Director of the Asbestos Diseases

Research Institute Professor Nico Van Zandwijk said Australians should continue to work stop asbestos from being dumped into the environment. “I came here five years ago and I thought I knew a bit about asbestos, but then I started learning here in Australia about the size, the tremendous size of the asbestos problem,” he said. “You may compare asbestos waste with nuclear waste, because it retains its toxic properties during the ages, so we must be very careful that we handle it well... Th is lovely country deserves a better future.” The model asbestos policy was a 2011 commitment from the State Government.

Lexus driver who slammed into a mother and her newborn baby on a St Peters footpath last year had time to brake and prevent the accident, a magistrate found on Monday. Bryce James Wayland, 26, of Queenscliff, was found guilty of negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm which left Emma De Silva, now of Penrith, with serious head injuries in March last year. Mr Wayland, who will be sentenced in January, previously gave evidence that his pedal had jammed under a mat on

his floor and that he had tried to remove it three times before he swerved to avoid hitting a bus and mounted the kerb. Magistrate Graeme Curran accepted Wayland’s claim the pedal was jammed but said a reasonably prudent driver should have applied the brakes. Ms De Silva spent eight days in a coma after the crash and her 19-day-old daughter suffered a broken shoulder and minor head injuries. A Facebook status update on the Emma de Silva Foundation page thanked members of the community for their ongoing support.

The Your Baby Can Read! programme is a fun, multisensory approach to teaching language. The programme works so well because it is easy for a child to connect the written word to the word sound, and the meaning of the word. By utilizing this approach to teaching, children have a greater chance at reading success! Your baby will see the words, hear the words, say the words, see images and videos related to the words, the words are always used in context and your child is encouraged to do an action related to the words. Your child will SEE, HEAR, SAY and DO! Your child can learn to read as easily and naturally as he or she learns to talk.

About 6am on Wednesday, November 21, a woman was walking along Old Canterbury Road at Lewisham when she was approached from behind by two male offenders. A short struggle began after one offender tried to grab the victim’s handbag from her shoulder, causing the victim to fall and hit her head on the pavement. The offenders fled the scene in a silver-coloured sedan after taking the victim’s handbag. The car was last seen heading south on Old Canterbury Road towards Railway Terrace. The fi rst offender was described as male, of Middle Eastern appearance, 175-180cm tall, of medium build, with short hair and wearing a white, short sleeve t-shirt. Police are reminding anyone hosting a party at home this summer to plan thoroughly for a fun and hassle-free event. There are many occasions to celebrate during summer months and many people will choose to throw a party at home. Police are urging anyone planning a party to register the event with local police. From school formal after-parties and end of year celebrations, to 18th and 21st birthday parties, as well as Christmas parties or casual get togethers; careful planning and following simple safety tips can assist with keeping your party safe. NSW Police Force Youth Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Carlene York, said throwing a party is about creating memories and having a good time, but poor planning can lead to problems. “A few simple precautions and proper planning can reduce the risk of issues arising, and ensure everyone remembers the night for the right reasons,” Assistant Commissioner York said. “We urge anyone planning a party to visit www.mynite.com.au, register the event with their local police and download the Party Tips Pack.” Assistant Commissioner York added that it is not the police’s responsibility to provide security at private parties. “Most party goers are responsible, but we’ve seen an increasing number of parties spoilt by gatecrashers and people who cause damage in the immediate area,” she said.

Lisa Burns of NNC with Dorothy McCrae-McMahon and Susan Leith-Miller

New courses: Centre creates next generation of activists

C

ommunity activist workshops are on the agenda at the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre for early next year after the idea was flagged at the centre’s AGM on Wednesday. NNC chief Lisa Burns said the community activist workshops would be a living memorial to the late Trevor Davies and Alison Blogg, both strong supporters of the NNC who passed away recently.

“We’ve lost two of our strongest community activists,” Ms Burns said. Ms Burns said the idea was still in its embryonic stages but would be a joint effort from community stakeholders to help residents start campaigns for positive change in their own neighbourhoods. “I want this to be exactly like Ali and Trevor were, where it’s a whole partnership. So I want to talk to people.” She said courses could include topics like how to write effective letters to politicians, how to put together press releases and how to form petitions.

Residents should brush up on the first aid ahead of spider season in the warmer months.

KATHERINE TWEED

S

piders are the stuff of nightmares as many can be harmful to humans, but not many people possess the knowledge to treat a spider bite. Just last week, paramedics responded to an emergency call in Sydney’s west after a six-year-old boy was bitten on the arm by a red back spider. The boy was transported to hospital in a stable condition however, the incident serves as a timely reminder to brush up on your fi rst aid knowledge. If you or your child is bitten by a large black spider, you should apply a pressure bandage to the area and

head straight to hospital as it is possible it could have been a funnel web spider. “However, there are other spiders that are big and black in appearance that don’t cause serious illness but it can be difficult to tell them apart,” said Director of the Emergency Department at Nepean Hospital, Rod Bishop. “The other spider that can make you sick, but despite its reputation is not deadly, is the red back spider. If you are bitten by a red back spider, a cold pack may help to reduce the pain.” For more information on how to treat a spider bite if you are bitten, contact the NSW Poisons Information Centre on 131 126 or the medical advice line on 1800 022 222.

erncourt Public School children spent the week searching their shelves and toy boxes for treasures to send to orphans in

India. Every morning, students brought in toys – old and new – for a toy drive for children at the Our Home orphanage in Kerala, India. Principal Ruth Turnell said the school community’s response was amazing. “We see it as a wonderful opportunity

for our kids to realise what privileged lives they lead. We do try to impress on them that they are part of the global community,” Ms Turnell said. Once the drive is complete, the toys will be shipped to India with freight space donated by local businessman Scott Brunelle of BCR. The toy drive was sparked by Ferncourt parent Julia Richardson, who was so moved by the Australian documentary ‘I am Eleven’ about the Our Home orphanage in Kerala that she contacted the fi lmmaker Genevieve Bailey who will visit the school today.

he Independent Liquor Retailers group, which has something like 250 outlets across Australia, has launched its first private label wines that it whimsically calls The Owl & The Pussycat, and which will target those looking for quality wines in the $10 to $15 price bracket. They’ve launched with a New Zealand 2011 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and a 2011 Barossa Shiraz. The Sauvignon Blanc is quite a stand-out at $13.99 and was sourced from fruit from Marlborough’s Awatere sub-region. The distinctive flint/mineral characters and natural acidity of the region has carried through in the wine, that also displays subtle tropical fruit flavours, passionfruit notes and lovely lemon/lime characteristics. They are certainly worth seeking out to enjoy with Italian creamy garlic or tomato-based pasta sauces, or as a foil to spicier Thai foods. And the Independent Liquor Retailers group says it’s also got a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Sparkling in the pipeline. One for lunch: The Clare Valley’s Tim Adams and wife Pam have released a 2009 Tempranillo under their Mr Mick label that honours the late Mick Knappstein who for over 50 years made wines at

Leasingham Winery that Tim and Pam bought in 2011. Tempranillo was virtually unknown in Mick’s day, but Tim and Pam have discovered how well-suited it is to the district, producing a full-bodied yet easy-drinking red with smooth tannins, strawberry flavours and a beautiful hint of spice. At only $15, far less than many other local Tempranillos, it’s a wine that will go down well at the table with a wide diversity of cuisines – and certainly with the roast turkey if you’re starting to think about what to put on the table on Christmas day.

Rosemount celebrates three decades of community service in the inner west

he Rosemount Good Shepherd youth and family service celebrated its 30th anniversary with speeches and performances by young people and former clients on Tuesday. Rosemount was established in 1982 to meet the needs of marginalised youth and families in Sydney and have grown to provide a range of social and economic activities promoting inclusion in the community. The event celebrated the achievements of the young people and their families who have accessed Rosemount services including alternative education, counseling, early intervention and microfi nance services. CEO Lyn Harrison said the milestone marked a time to give thanks to the young people, families, clients and staff. “Mary Euphrasia, our founding saint, said these beautiful words: ‘gratitude is the memory of the heart’. So I’d like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude,” Ms Harrison said. “I can honestly say that in my very long career I have never worked with such a dedicated group of staff. They certainly do believe in the goodness and the greatness of each of the young people and the clients they work with.” Ms Harrison said new programs in the last three years had expanded Rosemount’s work, including the provision of early intervention mental health

Ms Bangura said she showed Mama Africa, her fi rst poem, to Rosemount counselor Amanda who encouraged her to continue her art.

“Rosemount has given me my confidence in life,” Ms Bangura said. “I’m motivated to do more things in my poetry, my dancing, my acting and my rapping as well.” Marrickville MP Carmel Tebbutt attended the event and spoke of her admiration and respect for Rosemount. A former client spoke about how

Rosemount youth workers helped her through difficult teenage years and later inspired her to do the same for others as a social worker herself. She described Rosemount as a “great place to stifle after-school hunger” and said its regular ‘chill out nights’ were a chance for her in her teens to meet new friends in a non-threatening environment.

As Christians we remember the birth of Jesus at Christmas, believe that He gave Himself as a sacrifice at Easter, and has ascended into Heaven. Cicciolina restaurant: Traditional and tantalisingly creative Italian dishes

BUSINESS OF THE WEEK

T

he fi nest authentic Italian fare is on offer at Cicciolina Italian restaurant and pizzeria, with a fresh new menu launched from

today. Owner Vincent Vurchio, who took over the gourmet family restaurant in September, said the menu was changed to include more traditional-style dishes with the help of his Nona and encouraged lovers of genuine Italian cuisine to stop by.

“Our focus will be on rotating weekly specials from different regions of Italy,” Mr Vurchio said. While the set menu includes the standard Italian staples you’d expect from an Italian restaurant, Mr Vurchio said the specials board will display seasonal dishes with some culinary creativity from week to week, inspired by his own father’s regular trips to Italy. “My dad’s probably the biggest influence,

he’s in Italy every six months going to every restaurant, so he comes back with all these little traditional dishes. He takes photos and brings them back here for ideas.” He said the restaurant caters to all tastes, with meat and seafood dishes including Balmain bugs. “We can cater for all dietary requirements. We do vegetarian and vegan food, we’re pretty strong in those areas.” Since taking over, Mr Vurchio has

opened the kitchen walls so pizza-lovers can watch their wood fi red pizzas being made. He also plans to restore the former mural on the restaurant wall, which was removed by the previous owners. “Our pizza chef Gabriele is from Napoli and he’s also an artist. He makes the pizzas in a really traditional way and he’s very particular about how he places things on his pizza – it has to look as well as taste good.”

Th is will all be for the good, as the splendid aspect between Mars and Uranus encourages you to reach for the sky. You have the will and insight to make the most of opportunities.

You could fi nd yourself travelling over great distances at some time during the next few weeks. You may be asked to visit friends, or family who live far away. Alternatively you may decide to take advantage of a good holiday package. You will also enjoy taking mental and spiritual journeys by taking up a course of study or training. Art, music and theatre will capture your interest in the weeks ahead.

GEMINI

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Your passions are going to be aroused in some important way and you could fi nd yourself behaving in an unusual manner due to the depth of your emotions. Make sure that you are not simply reacting out of anger or some kind of feverish response to other people’s actions. Family troubles may have made you feel somewhat insecure recently and decisive action is required so be brave!

Something important concerning relationships must be tackled over the next few weeks. You and your lover will be putting extra energy into your partnership. Th is may be in the form of taking up a sporting hobby or some other kind of shared interest. However, Mars is known as the God of War, therefore you will need to be careful of becoming hot under the collar at the behaviour and actions of loved ones.

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

Th is is an excellent time to get your hands on any kind of equipment or machinery that will make your life easier. Th is may be something that will make you more efficient at your job or something that makes housework and the gardening easier to do. The planets are making you feel alive and effective and something of a workaholic, which is rather impressive. However you must be careful not to wear yourself out.

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

It seems that the theme is for fun and Mars and Uranus continue this social trend, mixing in a little romantic passion for good measure. Th is is the time to circulate among people you like and respect. You never know – a friendship could deepen into something more intimate before very long. Time spent with children or younger people will be exciting and connect you with your own inner child.

HOROSCOPES by Francis A Bevan

www.francisbevan.com

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Your energy is going to be directed into your home and the area surrounding it. Thus you may spend time working on or in the home or in the garden surrounding your abode. However, you will also be feeling rather defensive and are likely to over react to any criticism of your efforts – whether it’s intended or not. Therefore, you will need to pull yourself together and stop taking everything to heart and learn to accept some criticism.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Mars marches into your communication house this week, so being direct, not to say forceful, in speech will be a feature of the next few weeks. If you’ve got something to say then there’s no power in heaven or on earth that’s going to prevent you from saying it! Life is going to be rather hectic as there will be a truck load of emails, phone calls, correspondence or paperwork that will need attending to as well.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

The big focus is going to be on your fi nancial affairs and the red planet is going to enable you to increase your funds and to pay off your debts. However, you will need to be careful of your spending habits as you will be inclined to buy things impulsively. Confl icts are likely over money so think before you act. Also this is not the best time to commit yourself to any long term repayment schemes.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Mars has now entered your own sign of the zodiac and it will spend a few weeks there, bringing zest, energy and a welcomed element of fun into your life. You seem to be on a roll at the moment and, as long as you keep up the momentum, there is no reason why you should not be able to reach your objectives. However, you will need to be careful of getting angry at the behaviour or thoughtless actions of others.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

There are going to be extra pressures being placed on you either at home or at work and you are going to want to escape all the confusion that seems to be surrounding you. Th is is not the best time in which to make too many far flung decisions as you are likely to be feeling highly vulnerable and confused. Be careful of stupid accidents happening as a connection with hospitals or doctors is likely.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Friends are likely to be a strong influence on you over the next few weeks. Old friends may have interesting ideas to put your way, while new ones could come crowding into your life quite quickly. You may join some kind of very active group that shares your interests and is keen to have you as part of its organisation. However, there will be a need to watch what you say around certain people.

Heart attack

KEEPING FIT by David Stein

Don’t become an exercise dropout

N

o one plans on having a heart attack but unfortunately, too many people do suffer one. So how do you know if you are in cardiac arrest? A heart attack occurs when there is a blockage of one or more of the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. When this occurs, some of your heart muscle begins to die. At this point, literally every second counts! It’s not always like the movies where you suddenly clutch your chest and fall to the ground. Though heart attacks can be sudden with no warning, in most cases your body will give you warning signs. Th is is when it is important to listen to your body and take it very seriously. As a registered nurse who has worked in emergency wards for years, I got to see and thankfully help save many people who were suffering a heart attack. However, not everyone has a good outcome. Some people came to hospital too late for any amount of treatment to save them. One of the main factors was how quickly they got help. I remember treating a gentleman brought in by his son, all he complained of was not feeling well and a bit nauseous and was almost apologetic he was making a fuss. He also looked a bit pale and it was only because I had worked with so many before, I recognised it and immediately started the treatment process. But even with the doctors and equipment on hand it

was too late and unfortunately he passed away within 20 minutes. Every heart attack presents itself differently, symptoms range from shortness of breath, a feeling of chest tightness or heaviness. I have heard it be described as feeling like an elephant is sitting on your chest! Another symptom is left sided chest pain that can radiate to the left shoulder and down the left arm, neck or jaw and central crushing chest pain. You may feel nauseas, look pale and sweaty and feel fatigued. Do not ignore any of these symptoms. They can be telling you to get help because your heart muscle is dying, delay can cause further damage or death. If possible tell someone what you are feeling and immediately dial 000. In this case it is always better to be safe than sorry. It can effect young or old. Act wisely and immediately and you may protect yourself from a heart attack, and your family from heartache!

W

e all know exercise has many, many benefits, so why doesn’t everyone do it? Research suggests that over 50 per cent of people starting an exercise program will drop out within the fi rst six months. Some people may view themselves as incompetent without ever trying to exercise! What are we doing wrong? Studies show people who overestimate their expectancies from exercise are most likely to drop out. For example a person who expects to lose a lot of weight from exercise, and doesn’t, is likely to drop out from the exercise program. Th is shows how important realistic goals presented in an attainable timeline are to helping a person stay with the exercise program. Google up S.M.A.R.T. goals for some tips on how to write actual goals and not just jot down dreams. Furthermore, a person with low self worth i.e. self-doubting, insecure, negative self talk and poor body image is more likely to be an exercise dropout. These individuals tend to place less value on the benefits exercise will give them when compared to those who adhere to exercise. Also exercise dropouts often worry a lot about how others perceive their exercise efforts and focus on their lack of abilities!

Elisha is a registered nurse and midwife who has years of experience working in emergency departments, general wards and maternity wards

So what about the people who manage to stick to their program? Research consistently shows that positive feedback, from say a coach or trainer, reinforcement that exercise is worthy and beneficial and social support, from significant others, will improve a person’s self-perception to initiate and maintain an exercise program. They also fi nd ways to overcome other barriers such as: Lack of time? They will plan, organise and prioritise exercise. Lack of motivation? Try new and different exercise options. Find different ways to make the workout more enjoyable. Poor body image? They will focus on personal accomplishments and not compare themselves to others. It’s important to be educated on the many health and lifestyle benefits of exercise. Lack of support? Arrange to exercise with a partner or in a small group or hire a trainer. Feeling Guilty? Seek the support of family and friends so they do not feel guilty about the time they are spending on exercise. For instance, as the client gets healthier they will have more energy and vitality to spend with family and friends. Adapted from Huberty et al., 2008. Got a question for Dave? new comedy with the ‘Wedding Band’ premiering this Wednesday, December 5. The show stars former ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ actor, Brian Austin Green, and follows a group of guys who try to escape the stress and strains of their everyday lives by performing in a wedding band. The show’s doing really well in the States and should prove a hit for Ten over summer.

he television world lost one of its greats over the weekend with the death of Larry Hagman. The ‘Dallas’ star made a huge impact on many people’s lives including myself. I can remember growing up watching Hagman as Major Anthony Nelson in re-runs of the hit 60’s classic ‘I Dream of Jeannie’. It was a little over a year ago when Hagman was last in Australia as part of the Supernova Pop Culture Expo in Sydney. I interviewed Hagman’s co-star Bill Daily and he described Hagman as “dynamite” and “brilliant to work with”. You’ll be missed JR. More changes at Channel 10 with ‘The Project’ losing its Sunday evening timeslot. ‘The Simpsons’ will return in its place from this weekend.

US cult show ‘Community’ will soon be less funny after it was announced Chevy Chase was leaving the comedy series. The ‘Christmas Vacation’ star was with the show for three and a half years but was always very critical of the direction the show was going in. Chase’s departure could also spell the end of the show, which has already survived one axing thanks to overwhelming fan support. One show I can’t get enough of at the moment is Animal Planet series ‘Finding Bigfoot’. The show follows four eccentric but passionate members of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organisation as they desperately search the United States for Bigfoot. Now you probably shouldn’t take this show too seriously but some of the evidence the team come across is quite captivating, and makes you think that perhaps there is a sasquatch

SIR CLIFF IS STILL WIRED FOR SOUND AT 72 A

t 72 years of age, you could be forgiven for thinking that UK pop music megastar Sir Cliff Richard would want to put his feet up and enjoy his autumn years. However, Sir Cliff is definitely one artist to whom you wouldn’t want to apply the term autumnal to – he is the very epitome of the evergreen artist. “For me maintaining the energy levels and passion for what I do isn’t really hard because I absolutely love it – so it’s all about eating correctly and exercising because, at the end of the day, I really don’t want to look like some old has-been,” he said. If the sales of his iconic calendars are anything to go by (his 2011 calendar sold more than four million copies), ‘has-been’ doesn’t even enter into the equation. After a critically-lauded Australian tour in 2010 with his original and iconic back-up band The Shadows, Sir Cliff will be returning to our shores to prove, once again, that he’s still got it on his ‘Still Reelin’ and Rockin’ tour. Considering though that his first single, ‘Move It’ was released in 1958 and he has since amassed more than 250 million global record sales not to mention 25 Aussie top 10’s, does choosing a set list for a greatest hits show like this prove problematic? “It really is a nice problem to have... But with a 54-year career, it becomes impossible to do absolutely everything in one night, but what I will say is that people can expect to know absolutely everything.” That’s not to say there won’t be some surprises. Sir Cliff said he was currently working on a new album of rock and roll standards in Nashville including The Four

Voices’ ‘Sealed With A Kiss’, Dion’s ‘Dream Lover’ and Chuck Berry’s ‘Reelin and Rockin’ – all of which are likely to get an airing in the Aussie shows. “I never, ever thought I’d be doing this for as long as I have. When I was first signed I didn’t think I was going to live to 50, let alone have a 50-year career,” he said. “You see, when we started, we were kind of just written off as being one hit wonders – you know, one of those here today, gone tomorrow outfits. Anyway, I was looking at that record and I realised, ‘Wow, I’ve been doing this for 10 years now – maybe I’m not a one hit wonder after all’, I was quite amazed.” Over the years, Sir Cliff has been the source of a fair bit of both good and not so good natured ribbing for his ultra cleancut image in the late 60’s – a time when most rockstars were going through their hedonistic or Maharishi phase. Perhaps the most notable use of Sir Cliff as comedy tool was in the classic UK student comedy ‘The Young Ones’. The show’s would-be anarchist Rik would often espouse his love for all things Cliff Richard; the show borrowed his smash hit of the same name for the opening credits, and he even teamed up with the cast to record a version of his song ‘Living Doll’ to raise money for Comic Relief. “I always absolutely loved that show... it was never nasty and always in a goodnatured way,” Sir Cliff said. But support from commercial radio, particularly in Britain has become increasingly rare for Sir Cliff. The snub is so obvious, that in 2011, digital radio

station Absolute Radio 60’s passed down an edict that they would not play any of Sir Cliff’s records as they did not fit into the ‘cool’ sound espoused by the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who. At the time, Sir Cliff responded to this by saying, “They’re lying to themselves and they’re lying to the public”. While he may be bitter about radio effectively killing his recording career, he said he has come to terms with it now

and wears the fact that he has managed to endure in spite of radio, as a badge of honour. “They really crushed what I was and that was a recording artist – they effectively took away my livelihood,” he said. “I’m kind of proud now that I have been able to endure... I’ve basically been on a lucky streak for the past 54 years so, for, me that’s all that really matters.” – By Stephen Bissett

he Marrickville Chamber of Commerce is promoting Marrickville’s main streets as the place to go to shop locally for Christmas goodies this festive season. To entice shoppers to stay inside the precinct along Illawarra and Marrickville Roads, a smorgasbord of local Christmas bargains from local businesses and free entertainment will be on offer. Marrickville councillor and president of the Chamber Of Commerce, Morris Hanna, said the shops along Marrickville and Illawarra Roads are already well known as bargain central and this Christmas will be no exception. “Everything you need for Christmas can be found in Marrickville and special Christmas offers are everywhere so we encourage locals to shop locally at this time,” Cr Hanna said. Local shops will take part in a best dressed window competition and are developing Christmas specials including for fresh seafood, Christmas roasts as well as gift specials to offer local shoppers. This week, the streets were decorated with garlands and a Christmas tree with fairy lights will soon be seen in Alex Trevallion Plaza. In the coming weeks, the traditional Christmas cheer will only increase with free festive entertainment. Hyundai’s trio of awards

Hatch, SUV and People Mover take out national awards competition for 2012

A

ustralia’s motoring clubs have recognised three Hyundai models as class-winners in the Australia’s Best Cars national awards for 2012. After rigorous testing and analysis, Hyundai received five fi nalist nominations, with coveted Australia’s Best Car awards presented to the i30 hatch in the Small Car Under $35,000 segment, the all-new Santa Fe in the SUV over $40,000 class and iMax in the People Mover category. “Th is is a very strong result for Hyundai, and in particular for i30 nameplate which is now an impressive four time winner in Australia’s Best Cars,” said Hyundai’s Australian marketing director Oliver Mann. “The 2012 fi nalists line up offered tough competition, and to see three Hyundai models recognised as best in class is a tremendous accolade for the brand.”

Hyundai’s i30 hatch, iMax and Santa Fe took home awards from the Australia’s Best Car Awards this week.

The impressive Hyundai i30 Hatch took out the Best Small Car under $35,000 category, this year up against strong competition from its sibling Elantra Active model. The i30 has been a popular choice for motorists, recognised for its outstanding value without compromise;

it offers an impressive package of performance, safety, economy, and style, with judges commenting the i30 was “a particularly easy car to drive and to live with”. The Hyundai iMax diesel has taken out the Best People Mover category every

year since its launch – an impressive five consecutive years. “To win five in a row is impressive and the iMax fulfi ls the brief in this class, moving people and their luggage, and that’s what it’s all about,” commented Australia’s Best Cars judges.

Sport Jets’ night of nights

Victory dinner recognises Kara’s bravery, Tupou’s acrobatics

$CRAP T

he Newtown Jets ended a successful rugby league season with a splendid presentation night and victory dinner on November 21. The function was attended by more than 300 people and was held at the Petersham RSL Club, one of the Jets’ long-term and major sponsors. The major award winner of the night was courageous forward Kurt Kara, who won the prestigious Fred Daly Memorial Shield, for the player who has contributed most to the club on and off the playing field in the current season. Kara’s bravery during the fi nals in playing on with a serious ear injury capped off another impressive year for this quality Waikato, New Zealand product. Skillful front-rower Andrew Pearn won the club’s best and fairest award, as well as the best forward award for 2012. Pearn has previously played with several other clubs in the NSW Cup competition but certainly reserved his best-ever form for the Newtown Jets, earning himself a premiership-winner’s medal in the process. Acrobatic winger Daniel Tupou won the best back award, having scored 21 tries for the season mostly through his well-practiced leap and catch try-scoring routine. His tactics were very successful, including

Newtown’s fi rst try in the NSW Cup Grand Final. Tupou also scored several more tries for the Sydney Roosters during his NRL appearances with the Tricolours in 2012. Other players’ awards for 2012 included a most improved award to Saulala Houma; a coach’s award to Adam Henry; most consistent to Isaac Liu; and the award for the players’ player to Ahmad Ellaz. Jets head coach Greg Matterson and director of operations Stuart McCarthy were jointly-awarded the club person of the year award, for non-players who have made major contributions to the club during the year. 2012 has been a remarkable year for the Jets, with the VB NSW Cup premiership victory being Newtown’s highest level achievement in 38 years. The Jets won the NSW Rugby League reserve grade premiership back in 1974, with the former reserve grade competition being a forerunner of the present-day NSW Cup. More than 600,000 viewers across eastern Australia watched the NSW Cup Grand Final on Channel 9, a record viewing audience for this competition. Back it is back to business now with the team resuming training with renewed focus and the goal to defend their NSW Cup Premiership Title.
