he resurrection of Camperdown Bowling Club may be in the offi ng with tenders put out for a licensee who will rejuvenate the club with amenities and recreational facilities that won’t include pokies. The Greens Party led by Marrickville Councillor Sylvie Ellsmore have successfully moved a motion that will ban pokies and have them removed when the club is restored. “I am very proud that Council has now confi rmed it will be moving to fi nd a licensee who
will revive the Club without poker machines,” she said. She said the club was a great entertainment venue and so reviving the club from its current receivership situation was vital. “Having someone come in and make it a viable business without pokies is what was needed.” She said gambling was a social problem that also needed to be addressed. “Australians spend nearly $1 billion a year on pokies and three quarters of people who have a serious problem with gambling are pokie players. One in six people who play the pokies regularly have a serious addiction,” she said.
Other clubs in the Inner West have become successful without pokies, for example the Petersham Bowling Club. “It’s [now] a great place for younger families, and a regular place for local musicians,” she said. When completed, the new look Camperdown Bowling Club will be enticing families and there is hope, that with the right licensee, further opportunities will arise to enhance the club. Following on from this success, the Greens have called for a report on the use of poker machines and gambling in Council owned and controlled venues, which will be debated at an upcoming Council meeting.

W
ell, well, well…. We now have a competition on our hands. Kevin Rudd has seized back the leadership and Tony Abbott for the fi rst time in a long time is on the back foot. The return of Kevin Rudd has rattled the Coalition and its once fearless leader. The resurrection shouldn’t have come as a huge surprise – but the Opposition seem like they’ve been caught sans strategy. The polls show it’s now neck and neck. It could be a honeymoon period, but the scary thing for Mr Abbott is voters just don’t like him personally. But, of course, none of this matters until election day – which brings me to the million dollar question. When will we be able to cast our vote? Everyone and anyone is offering their own prediction – there are 21 possible choices. Public holidays, football grand fi nals and time constraints rule many Saturdays out – and the law requires election campaigns run for no less than 33 days. I’m going to go with October for the reasons outlined below:
• July 13, 20, 27 – It can’t be anytime in this month as there’s still policy to sort out and it would breach the time provisions in the electoral act. • August 3, 10, 17 – They would still be a massive confl ict when it comes to time restraints for the local government referendum. • August 24, 31 – Still confl icts with local government referendum requirements. There are also two scheduled sitting weeks here – so we could be going back to parliament for a fortnight of parliamentary debate. • September 7 – The G20 Summit in Russia falls here and Mr Rudd has strongly indicated that he would like to see Prime Ministerial representation at the meeting. • September 14 – Th is is the date that Julia Gillard nominated. Mr Rudd is certain not to abide by her provisions. It’s also the Jewish Holy Day of Yom Kippur . • September 21 – School holidays in the eastern states – including New South Wales. Th is weekend also takes in the AFL preliminary fi nal. Although, this week, a senior government minister said the prelims were not an impediment to holding an election.
Kevin Rudd still won’t reveal the big date.
• September 28 – AFL Grand fi nal. NRL Preliminary Finals. • October 5 – NRL Grand fi nal. • October 12, 19, 26 – Any of these three dates are looking good. • November 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 – Kevin Rudd wouldn’t risk a November poll. The pressure from the Coalition would be too great and he could risk voter backlash.

he media tends to love reporting on itself so it was no surprise that they’ve had a field day with the story surrounding Melissa Doyle’s departure from the Seven Network’s ‘Sunrise’ program. My favourite part of the story is that she’s apparently taken a $150,000 pay cut at the network – and will only earn $500,000 this year. Yes, only $500,000. My mate Dave the truckie and I were chatting about it on Monday night and about how such figures are justified. I made the comment that my father had slogged away for years at his job, for a pay cheque well short of $500,000-a-year. Dave agreed, and then said the poignant line: “But he’s probably happier.” And that reminded me of a saying I really love: “Someone else is happy with less than what you have.” It’s a line I’m sure I’ll use on my kids one day but one that does manage to keep you grounded when times get tough, or indeed, when times aren’t so tough and you need a bit of a reality check, like we all do sometimes.
TROY DODDS From The Editor’s Desk
On Tuesday my day started by getting out of bed and stepping in a rather wet surprise my dog had left on the floor – her world’s best bladder title is now under threat. Problem is, that was the highlight of the day. Mid-afternoon, however, some perspective was thrown my way. News came through that Para-athletics athlete Daniel Berry had lost his battle with cancer. Daniel, by the way, was 22. Having previously undergone treatment for a brain tumour six years ago, he recovered to go on and represent Australia as an AWD Athlete in both soccer and athletics. Tragically, in December last year, doctors discovered that Daniel had another brain tumour. Seven months later, he lost his life. Daniel may have had less than many of us, but seemed to be a happy, down-toearth young man. Yes, it’s true – someone else is happy with less than what you have. But unfortunately, Daniel’s death will be largely unreported. Melissa Doyle’s pay cheque will still be a bigger talking point in the media.

Mr Pallos said Australia has fallen behind in comparison to where it once was. “I don’t believe we as a nation are heading in the right direction. So much needs to be done to get this country back on its feet again,” he said. Mr Pallos spoke of the need to make changes that will have a positive impact on all Australians, politically, socially and economically. “We’ll remove the Fringe Benefit Tax that has become an impediment for the growth of business. People going should be able to go to lunch for business purposes and not pay for it,” he said. “People are building, networks and connections and doing business. Removing the FBT will allow them to claim those costs.” Mr Pallos said the health system worked well through Medicare, however, if elected he would advocate for changes to the structure of funding. “Every Australian deserves proper and comprehensive health care. ast month creative people from the Inner West were encouraged to apply for the Creative Young Stars program giving people under the age of 25 a chance to snap up a $500 grant to fund their chosen fields. One of those was Jordan Koorey a budding fi lm maker. Jordan, a student at St Maroun’s College in Dulwich Hill is only 14-years-old. But his maturity and focus belie his age. The Year 9 student made a number of short fi lms in 2012: ‘Cyber bullied’, ‘A Quiet Suburb’ and ‘Art in Motion’, all available on YouTube and run no longer than 15 minutes each. Making a short fi lm takes a lot of work. The logistics can be as tough and time consuming as making the fi lm itself. His mum Mary said the work going into the fi lms was considerable. “When he made ‘A Quiet Suburb’ we had to call the police to ask them to supervise the residential area that was being fi lmed,” she explained. “It’s a crime and action fi lm so you can imagine having people with props that look like real guns, other weapons, and masks,” Jordan added. “We had actors playing robbers in a residential area, someone was bound to think it was real and call the police.” Jordan’s movie making prowess is all encompassing. He writes, produces, and directs everything. “I write all the scripts, even down to

Cancer Council Community Programs Coordinator Mark Ludbrooke thanked Marrickville Council for its ongoing support in reducing cancer rates. “Currently one in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85 but we can turn this around by working together,” he said. In July 2011 Marrickville Council introduced the Smoke-Free Outdoors Environments Policy which restricts smoking at sports grounds, aquatic and other recreational facilities. As part of the ongoing commitment Cancer Council will promote presentations about cancer prevention at Marrickville library.
About 4.45pm on Monday, July 8, 2013 the residents of a Petersham Road unit in Marrickville returned home to fi nd their unit screen door was bent open and the front door ajar. The residents heard a noise from inside the unit. One of the occupants climbed onto the balcony and confronted a male inside the unit. The male pushed free and fled from the unit onto Petersham Road where he was confronted by the other occupant. Again the male pushed free and fled on foot but the occupant managed to grab a bag the male was holding. Marrickville Police attended and inside the bag located documents detailing the particulars of the offender along with property that belonged to the residents. Police attended a Campsie address and arrested the offender. He was taken to Campsie Police Station where he was charged with ‘aggravated break and enter’ and ‘commit serious indictable offence’. Fencers descend on PCYC Marrickville representatives claim the podium in national competition BASIL NAIMET
he National Fencing Championships were held from July 5 until July 10 at the Marrickville PCYC with plenty of talent on show. In total, 325 athletes participated from Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore. Marrickville competitor Beatrice Hay has only competed in fencing for three years but is already making her mark. She took out the girls u/15’s silver medal for the individual foil event and won gold in the team event. Whilst excited about the results, she’s even more excited to make the national u/17’s team and will compete at the Asian Games in Jordan next year. The boys u/17 national champion in the foil is Sholto Douglas from the Marrickville fencing club. He defeated Ned Fitzgerald from Victoria to take out the gold medal. “We have to get a placing and having done that I will almost certainly gain entry into the World Championships next year,” he said. The mixture of styles such as foil, sabre and epee means the international athletes get good exposure to the sport and against strong competition. “Having the international competitors come here gives them good experience because they have different styles and they get solid experience,” Ms Hay said. One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too. What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis. Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition. Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.

Marrickville Council is hosting a second series of support groups for people living with cancer. The group will be facilitated by the Life Force Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organisation that assists people with the disease. Held at Marrickville Library, the group will run for 10 weeks and welcomes cancer patients and survivors into a safe and caring environment. Participants will meet on Thursdays from 10am to 12.30pm, from July 18 until September 19. The workshop series will support participants by helping them to build communication skills to be used with friends, family, doctors and employers. People with cancer must cope not only with physical and medical challenges, but also worries, feelings, and concerns unique to their situation. Attending to the emotional burden of having cancer is often a part of a patient’s treatment plan. The Cancer Support Group will focus on helping participants to be in the present moment.

Ms Goward congratulated Ashfieldbased SSI management and staff for their passion and commitment to providing a loving home for vulnerable children, allowing them to stay connected with their culture and language. “The service is the fi rst of its kind in NSW where a multicultural organisation has been contracted to provide out-of-home care services specifically designed for CALD children and young people. “I am grateful to the dedicated staff at this service for their hard work to meet the complex and challenging needs of these young people.” Out of home care includes foster care, kinship care and other forms.

The corner shop, the local café and other small businesses across the country will reap the rewards of the Coalition’s latest policy announcement to reduce regulation and boost productivity. Shadow Small Business Minister Bruce Billson said the Coalition’s plan would help unleash the estimated $12 billion of productivity which lies tied up in unnecessary regulation according to the Productivity Commission. “The ability of our small businesses to not only compete on a local scale, but on the international stage is being affected by an ever growing web of red-tape and regulation,” Mr Billson said. If elected, a Coalition government will undertake a range of measures to deregulate the economy. These include: repealing Labor’s carbon tax; setting aside two Parliamentary sitting days for the repeal of legislation each year; and creating a dedicated unit within each department and agency that is charged with driving red tape reduction.

Train fight: Two tales of same tracks arrickville train commuters face continued train delays due to the O’Farrell government’s funding cuts to rail maintenance according to Member for Marrickville Carmel Tebbutt. Ms Tebbutt said delays occurred from earlier this year and had affected Inner West residents and would continue to do so. “There have already been 15 major delays on the network since February which have shut down our rail system for hours on end and left commuters stranded,” she said. She said the government could not “claim ignorance” when issues such as overhead wiring kept crippling the rail network, and Barry O’Farrell kept cutting the budget that would fi x the problem. She said as a consequence of the Premier standing by and watching Trasnport Minister Gladys Berejiklian slash the budgets, it caused extensive delays for the people of the [Marrickville] area trying to get to work. However Ms Berejiklian said the former Labor government didn’t look at the facts in making its assertions. “ If the Labor party were actually interested in the facts, rather than misleading the community, they would know that the transport asset maintenance expenditure is $2.98 billion in 2013-14, up by 13.7 per cent. On time running of the network has also increased over the past year, from 93.4 per cent to 94.2 per cent,” she said. Ms Berejiklian said the government had also introduced 3,000 extra public transport services a week since coming to government, including 107 train services: “We are investing much more heavily in public transport than Labor ever did”.

Marrickville Council is urging motorists to slow down around local schools. Students return to school next week for the start of Term 3. The 40km/hour speed zones and parking signs around all schools are there to save lives. Drivers should reduce their speed to 40km/hour between 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on school days when children are entering and leaving the school grounds. Children are small and can be hard to see behind parked cars so extra care needs to be taken. Do not: • double park • park across bus zones • park across pedestrian crossings • park across footpaths or driveways These actions can reduce driver visibility, cause traffic congestion and put children at risk. Mayor of Marrickville Councillor Victor Macri said it’s important that parents set a good example of road safety behaviour. “Children imitate our actions so behave responsibly. Take the time to cross the road at marked crossings, obey parking signs and observe the 40km/h speed limit,” said Councillor Macri. “As well, children can behave unpredictably, so be mindful of their possible actions to ensure their safety.”

Coat collection: Centre asks community for donations BASIL NAIMET
omeless Persons Week will be held from August 5 until 11 and the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre is getting behind the cause with the Community Coat Collection. The coat collection is aimed at raising awareness for Sydney’s hidden homeless. They are asking for good quality, coats or jackets to be donated this winter. According to Homelessness Australia only six per cent of people experience
H
homelessness on the street. The rest of them are hidden. There are four groups that are classified as ‘hidden’: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians; Domestic and Family Violence; those staying with other households and Australians in housing stress. The Newtown Neighbourhood Centre is relying on the compassion and generosity of the public to provide warm winter coats. You can drop the winter coats to a staff member of the Centre at 1 Bedford Street, Newtown, opposite Newtown train station.

A forum will encouage creative ideas to celebrate the GLBTI community.
Community forum: Rainbow rights placed in the spotlight ydney’s GLBTI community will come together at a public forum on Oxford Street to decide how best to symbolise their long campaign for equality. The forum will also give the community an opportunity to discuss the most important issues affecting them, and come up with ways to take effective action. The forum will be hosted by MC Bernie Hobbs, with special guest presenter and creator of the DIY rainbow crossing phenomenon James Brechney. “Since the removal of Taylor Square’s
S
rainbow crossing there have been a number of alternative ideas for recognising the GLBTI community on Oxford Street,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said. “We want to hear all the ideas on an appropriate way to recognise the GLBTI community – including a big rainbow flag – but also fi nd out how the City can help raise the profi le of the important issues that are affecting the community.” The ‘Rainbow Rights in the Spotlight’ forum will be held on Tuesday, July 16 at Paddington Town Hall. www.innercityweekender.com.au f you’re looking for some fun and excitement the whole family can enjoy, make tracks to the Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink. In March this year a small electrical fi re devastated the entire complex and as a consequence, it has undergone repairs and restoration to the fi re-damaged areas. But the good news for all those ice skating enthusiasts out there is that the ice rink, considered an institution after over 40 years of bringing fun to people of the Inner West, is now back and is bigger and better than ever before. Last Saturday the doors swung open and featured a number of exhibitions from the centre’s skating athletes, which saw them showcase their wonderful skills and talents on the ice. There were over 1,300 patrons that welcomed the centre back on the day. The patrons were treated to Figure Skating, Ice Hockey displays, Short Track Speed Skating and Synchronised Skaters who demonstrated their great skills for the anticipating crowd. The day had a carnival atmosphere about it as people skated with children and families who came together to enjoy the fun that is skating on ice. There were also cup cake stalls and face painting, generously donated by the ice rink’s in-house clubs, the Sydney Figure Skating Club and the Canterbury Eagles Ice Hockey Club, and the Sydney Arrows Speed Skating Club. Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink would like to extend a warm invitation to all the people of the Inner West to come to the friendliest, best value rink in Sydney’s Inner West. You’ll fi nd this incredible facility at Phillips Avenue, Canterbury. For more information on session times, gear hire and more, phone 9789 4044. ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
You are likely to be feeling vulnerable and confused so don’t make too many far flung decisions. A connection with doctors is likely for yourself or loved ones! A lot of your energy is going to be put into your home and family life. Be careful of becoming involved with intense power struggles with your partner or loved ones. If you try to force them around to your way of thinking they will only become rebellious.
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
You need to be careful of being too outspoken as it will lead to hot headed disputes! Also be careful whilst driving as the planets are making you rather stressed out and impatient! In your friendships and relationships any emotional blocks can be relieved through proper communication and a willingness to be tolerant and understanding. Th is will set the trend for more meaningful connections in the future.

A big focus is going to be on your fi nancial affairs and the red planet is going to increase your funds in order to help you pay off your debts. In your place of employment don’t let confl icting perceptions bog you down and obstruct you from doing your work.
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
Mars is directly in your sign so guard against impatience and be careful of getting angry at the thoughtless behaviour of others. Also be extra careful of accidents happening either on the road or in the home and be extra cautious when handling anything hot or sharp. Th is is an ideal time to increase your knowledge of computers and other technology. You will have loads of fun when you realise how easy it all is.

LEO
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
145ICD3306
There is likely to be a connection with surgeons and medical professionals either for yourself or a loved one. It’s time to look after your health, so work out a good strategy for improving your diet and lifestyle. You are going to be stirred up psychologically and will need to do your best not to let your anxieties control you. It’s an ideal time for tapping into talents you may not have realised that you possess.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
You will need to be careful when dealing with any issues involving your place of employment, clubs or groups of people as underhanded politics is likely to be coming from certain people. Friends also could make you feel weighed down, therefore you will need to give anyone who has a negative energy a very wide berth. Spending time with those who have been a solid anchor in your life will help to ground you.
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
A high pressure time is ahead of you career wise and you will need to watch your diet and get plenty of rest if you are to stay on top form. Differences between you and others at your workplace is obvious and when dealing with certain clients, colleagues or bosses remember that not everyone sees things the way you do! At home teamwork and pulling together as a family will bring an uplifting energy to the household.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Learn to trust others. Unburden yourself and share some of your stress and secrets! Accept social invitations readily as this will force you to face opinions that differ from your own. Also be tolerant and patient when dealing with foreigners and people from different backgrounds. Parents can expect a shift for the better in their relationship with children, in fact they’ll be more accommodating of your needs.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Avoid getting involved in disputes, either at work or in the family. There is nothing to gain from crossing swords with others and indeed there might be a good deal to lose. Make certain you are not acting out of anger in response to other people’s attitudes. Financially you need to come to terms with your true situation so face up to the facts and realise that through discipline you can achieve lasting security.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
With Mars in your opposite sign, there is a major focus on relationships, on one hand you are going to enjoy spending a lot of time with your loved ones but on the other you will fi nd yourself getting frustrated and irritated by the behaviour of certain people. Studies and all educational pursuits will go well, in fact you may be doing yourself a disservice by not actively seeking out some new form of wisdom.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Th is is not the ideal time to make serious commitments to anything, or any one, until you have given yourself the chance to think things through. Your work load will be increasing and you will need to be careful not to provoke arguments or to take your irritability out on colleagues. You need to fi nd ways to better handle stressful conditions in your life and a new health regime would be an ideal way to start.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
A lot of your energy is going to be invested into either romance, social activities or children. Your offspring will be extra demanding, they also may suffer sprains or strains if playing active sports such as soccer. Look at life realistically and resist the temptation to act upon every whim and fantasy. Entertainment is the perfect way to relieve the burden you’re under so surround yourself with upbeat people.

New system raises eyebrows here’s a new rating system that’s supposed to help us make better food choices. But maybe the rating system needs a better rating! I read in The Australian that these new star rating food labels are based on outdated research and won’t tackle Australia’s expanding waistline, according to nutrition experts. The new labelling system wants to help Australians choose healthier meals by rating foods on their fat, sugar and salt content. But a nutritionist says the five-star ratings are based on outmoded research that ignores current science’s more holistic understanding of nutrition and places too much emphasis on energy content. “The rating stars ignore the two new components of food – protein and low GI content,” said Professor Jennie BrandMiller of the University of Sydney’s School of Molecular Bioscience. “For example, breast milk would have two red marks, one for saturated fat and one for sugar.” Speaking at a food labelling conference in Sydney, Prof Brand-Miller said she was “very, very uncomfortable” with a star system which was underpinned by outdated research. “The energy content of the food is not the best way to judge; lentils and liquorice have the same energy density,” she said. Australians shouldn’t rely on government-imposed labels to keep them

Addiction lurking in junk food
slim, she said. However, the star rating system has received support from the Public Health Association of Australia. PHAA CEO Michael Moore says while the information was built from the best information available at the time it still would be open to regular updates as new scientific fi ndings arose. It seems like we have once again forgotten that there is a lot more to food than total energy. It makes as much sense as saying that two houses are exactly the same because they have the same amount of windows! What about the actual quality? Any rating system that has human breast milk below some manufactured cereal product has got to be a joke!
Y
ou really can’t eat just one! Just like the ad says. Maybe the processed food manufacturers know something we don’t. It seems junk food really could be addictive and stimulate cravings in much the same way as an illicit drug, a brain scanning study shows. Some research reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that limiting ‘high-glycaemic’ carbohydrates that cause blood sugar to surge could help curb over-eating and obesity. Scientists investigated how food intake is regulated by the brain’s ‘pleasure centres’ which are known to be linked to addiction. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to observe the brain activity of overweight and obese volunteers for four hours after a meal. Th is crucial period has been shown to influence behaviour the next time a meal is eaten. 12 men were given test meals designed as milk shakes that tasted the same and were matched for calories. One milk shake contained rapidly digested high-glycaemic index (GI) carbohydrates, often found in junk food, while the other was made with low GI carbohydrates. Consumption of the high GI drink was followed by an initial surge in
Elisha is a registered nurse and midwife who has years of experience working in emergency departments, general wards and maternity wards
blood sugar levels followed by a sharp crash four hours later. The sudden decrease in blood sugar was associated with excessive hunger and intense activation of the nucleus accumbens, a brain region central to addictive behaviour. Lead scientist Dr David Ludwig, director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Centre in Boston, US, said: “Beyond reward and craving, this part of the brain is also linked to substance abuse and dependence, which raises the question as to whether certain foods might be addictive.” “These fi ndings suggest that limiting high-glycaemic index carbohydrates like white bread and potatoes could help obese individuals reduce cravings and control the urge to over-eat.” So eating some healthy saturated fats and protein will raise your satiety levels so you feel satisfied for longer and make it a whole lot easier to make better choices at your next meal.

CLASSIC PLAY WILL LAUNCH ALL NEW THEATRE S
ydney’s newest theatre destination, the Eternity Playhouse, will open in November with the play that launched Arthur Miller’s career, ‘All My Sons’. Written in 1947 this classic play, twice adapted for film, will be presented by the Darlinghurst Theatre Company. The City of Sydney Council has spent $7.9 million transforming a heritage-listed former church in Darlinghurst into the state-of-the-art Eternity Playhouse, with stunning features including a 200-seat theatre, accessible lifts, bar and café dining space. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said it was fitting the Darlinghurst Theatre Company was opening the exciting new theatre with an Arthur Miller classic. “I’m delighted that the play that launched Arthur Miller’s stellar career is also going to launch our brand new theatre,” the Lord Mayor said. “The Eternity Playhouse, on the corner of Burton and Palmer streets, is going to become a new theatre destination for Sydneysiders, attracting visitors to the area, boosting local businesses and supporting new talent. “It will also provide a hub for Sydney’s world-class theatre talent to collaborate, rehearse and perform while engaging the local community through art and creativity.” Renowned theatre director Iain Sinclair’s season of ‘All My Sons’ will run from November 6 to December 1. Marshall Napier (previously starring in ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’) leads a stellar cast, including Toni Scanlan, Briallen Clarke,
Robin Goldsworthy, Anthony Gooley, Andrew Henry and Meredith Penman. ‘All My Sons’ launched Arthur Miller’s career when it premiered on Broadway, New York, in January 1947, winning two Tony Awards and the New Youth Drama Critics’ Circle Award. Based on a true story, the play centres on the mid-Western Keller family who are torn apart by a shameful secret. Set in post World War II, the father, Joe Keller, allowed his factory to ship faulty airplane cylinders to the US Armed Forces. Because of this, over twenty American pilots died. The play takes a critical stance on the ‘American Dream’ and created plenty of controversy. The Eternity Playhouse is housed in the former Burton Street Tabernacle, a Baptist church attended in the 1930s by Arthur Stace, who became famous for inscribing the word ‘Eternity’ on the footpaths of Sydney. The 1887 building was in a state of disrepair when acquired by the City, and staged restoration works have included installing a new slate roof, restoring the original decorative timber ceiling, repairing the internal plaster finishes and repointing the external brickwork. The building retains its heritage features while also boasting the latest in sound, lighting and stage technology, with power supplemented by solar energy. Rainwater will be collected and recycled for nondrinking purposes. For more details on ‘All My Sons’, call 8356 9987.

CHATTER ON THE BOX WITH NATHAN TAYLOR C
hannel Seven’s revived reality series ‘The Mole’ isn’t capturing viewers like it used to. The muchhyped series, which returned to Seven last week after five years, is struggling to find an audience. ‘The Mole’ debuted with a horrible 864,000 viewers and has dropped lower than that as the episodes progressed. I fear that if it doesn’t pick up over the next few weeks, it will end up airing at 10.30pm or worse, 7TWO. In some exciting news for paranormal fans like myself, SF on Foxtel has commissioned a new local paranormal investigation series titled ‘Haunting: Australia’. The show will feature Robb Demarest from ‘Ghost Hunters International’ as well as Ian Lawman from ‘Most Haunted’, Ray Jorden from the ‘Paranormal 5’, CEO of the Indian
Paranormal Society Gaurav Tiwari, Australian paranormal enthusiast Allen Tiller and clairvoyant Rayleen Kable. Each member of the team will use their individual paranormal techniques and methodologies in different haunted locations. The eight-part series begins filming in August and will air on SF in 2014. Channel Ten are putting together one all-star line-up for their Big Bash coverage later this year. After signing former Australian captain Ricky Ponting last week, Ten have now acquired former vice-captain and all-round legend Adam Gilchrist. One reality show that I hope does well again this year is ‘Big Brother’, even if the promos do suck. There’s some serious chatter that ‘BB’ will be back for another series on Nine from Monday, July 29.
Dreamworld are currently selling tickets to the launch on July 28, which pretty much gives it away! Popular fashion series ‘Project Runway’ returns to Arena on August 7. Season 11, hosted by the beautiful Heidi Klum, will feature its first ever Australianborn contestant, Sydney’s Benjamin Mach. The designers will be in the first-ever team edition.
Yet another Aussie babe is making it big in the USA. Esther Anderson, who played policewoman Charlie on ‘Home and Away’ has been given a great role on a rather interesting new TV series. ‘Siberia’, which premiered this week in the US follows 15 reality TV show contestants competing for cash prizes in the Siberian wildness. But it is no holiday because, yes, the crew disappears and people start dying! Hope she does well!
Hilarious and always controversial comedy series ‘Housos’ is back on SBS with season two later this month. Episode one of the nine-part series sees Dazza wanting to get Shazza the best birthday present ever – a fancy dinner voucher to a posh restaurant. Classic. Let’s hope this show causes some controversy again! ‘Housos’ airs Monday, July 22 at 9.30pm.
Lastly, a cool new show hosted by HG Nelson is coming to Nat Geo on Foxtel on Sunday, July 21 at 8.30. ‘Aussie Icons with HG Nelson’ takes a look at the amazing inventions and genius ideas that have put Australia on the map. Some of the inventions include: The Esky, wine cask, Wi-Fi, Hills hoist and even the emergency exit slide raft.

We can win this, Giants say GWS hope to cause massive upset as Sydney clubs do battle this weekend NATHAN TAYLOR
n a surprising statement, Greater Western Sydney Giants co-captain Callan Ward has declared his side can notch up their fi rst win of the season by beating reigning premiers, the Sydney Swans, this Sunday afternoon at the SCG. Ward made the rather astonishing call during a press conference to hype up AFL’s Sydney Derby 4 between the last placed Giants and the fourth-placed Swans. “I think we can beat them,” Ward said. Despite not registering a win so far this season, the Giants are confident they can give their cross-town rivals a big scare in what’s predicted to be a very physical clash. “I think the Swans are a great club and a great team, they always give their best and are extremely tough,” Ward said. “It’s a club that we’ve looked up to ever since we started in the AFL, so we’re expecting a physical performance on the weekend.” The 23-year-old midfielder said the Giants will channel the game plan of the Swans in the hopes of beating them at their own game. “Every team will go hard at the ball and hard at the man and that’s what the Swans do, that’s what we’ll try and do,” Ward said. “We can base our game on the way the Swans play the game and hopefully we can get away with a win or a really competitive game this weekend.” GWS had their closest contest of the

season last Saturday against the Western Bulldogs in Canberra. The Giants led at the turn of every quarter before going down in the fourth 87-83.
After beating the Giants in round one by 30 points, which was GWS’ second closest losing margin this season, Swans captain Jarrad McVeigh said he’s excited yet

he Jets managed a dramatic last ditch effort to beat Wentworthville 28-26 at Henson Park last Saturday. Newtown weren’t at their best from the outset of the match when Wentworthville scored a runaway try in the second minute of play, and continued their strength in attack and scored a number of tries from lapsed concentration from the Jets to lead 20-12 at the break. The Jets reversed their trend of starting the second half slowly by scoring two converted tries just after half time through Nafe Seluini and Henare Wells to lead 22-20. Wentworthville regained the lead midway through the second half as the Jets’ errors and indiscretions began to rise, as did the penalty count against them. However the speed of Henare Wells proved the difference in an otherwise disjointed effort from the Jets which saw him slice through the Wentworthville defence to score the equaliser in the 78th minute. Paul Rokolati was left to convert the winning goal. Both teams were certainly down in strength as is the case two-thirds of the way through the competition. Ben Jones made a useful return to playing duties after a lengthy absence due to a foot injury, and long-serving prop Khalid Deeb also returned after being unavailable for

several weeks due to injury. Even with strong performances by Newtown players Josh Ailaomai and Brad Barrett and a triple for Henare Wells,
Newtown on their day would have struggled against stronger teams. The Jets face tough opposition tomorrow when they take on the Newcastle Knights at Henson Park at 3pm.
