Mr McInerney is the founder of the Tempe 2020 Facebook page. He has an unbeatable enthusiasm and l ove f or t he s uburb of T empe, wh ich he actively promote s v ia Fac ebook, c ommunity groups, fundraisers and grassroots campaigns.

Van Liem Huynh, has been a practicing Buddhist and Tai Chi enthusiast who generously volunteers his time to help Marrickville locals learn the art of Tai Chi five times a week.

Mayor of Marrickville Jo Haylen said this year’s Citizens o f th e Y ear w ere in spiring c ommunity leaders that deserved recognition.

“Both P at a nd L iem a re u sing de dication a nd energy to improve our neighbourhoods, networks, and even our health,” she said.

“While Pat is using social media to create community c onnectedness a nd b elonging, L iem is out there teaching Tai Chi classes, and leading walking groups.

Are we forgetting to enjoy the best moments in our lives?

Every ge neration le aves b ehind i t s omething the next will never experience – whether that be good or bad.

If, like me, you grew up in the 1980’s and 1990’s, the t hings y ou le ave b ehind a re ac tually pret ty significant.

We will be the last generation to experience life without the Internet or pay television.

The last to experience the confusion and risk of programming a VCR, and to know what life was like without a mobile phone.

No mobile phone? The good old days!

Fights over the home phone with your siblings or parents, real conversations and my favourite, no sending texts saying you’ll be 15 or 20 minutes late, and thinking it’s totally acceptable.

The ot her d ay, I w atched a c lip of S teve J obs introducing the very first iPhone, a pro duct that has changed how we live and socialise.

For the better, most would say.

But there’s one part of any phone that is my arch nemesis: the camera.

I w as a t a w edding l ate l ast y ear a nd w as astounded by the number of people who got their smart phones out to take photos when the bride and groom were walking out of the church.

For what reason, I wondered.

Did they think the professional photographers being paid thousands of dollars to shoot the day’s events would stuff it up, and their blurry iPhone picture could save the day?

As it happens, a photographer friend of mine tells me they shot a wedding in December where the g uests w ere sp ecifically a sked not t o t ake photos and to leave it to the professionals. A first, but don ’t b e s urprised i f i t b ecomes a re gular, ongoing trend.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when I was at a six-year-old’s birthday party. As the cake came out, s o d id e veryone’s p hones t o c apture t hat precious, cute moment. The paparazzi at a sixyear-old’s birthday party. Wonderful.

I’ll never really know what drives people to post a phot o of t heir f ood t o t he w orld a nd more so, what makes them believe someone will be interested in the pasta dish they’ve whipped up.

You cut your lawn? Good for you, people have been doi ng i t f or de cades w ithout c redit – w e don’t need a picture of it.

I’m not suggesting I’m the king of social media avoidance here – I’ve been caught at the table plenty of times with my phone out. But come on folks, let ’s c apture t he re ally sp ecial, me aningful mome nts w ith phot ographs r ather t han ou r hourly movements.

Speaking e xclusively w ith t he Weekender, M r Rob ertson s aid t hat t he Premier’s knee-jerk reaction is a symptom of a Government that has “wasted the last three years”.

Mr Robertson released the Labor Party’s policy to r educe a lcohol f ueled v iolence late l ast y ear, wh ich i s b ased on t he Newcastle model of lockouts.

“The O’Farrell Government has cherrypicked our policy. I h ave always said that lockouts a nd ot her me asures shou ld b e trialed for 18 mon ths i n t he Sydney C BD, and if they are successful, I said there was no reason why you wouldn't put i n some consideration t o i mplementing t hose plans elsewhere,” he said.

“In ou r p olicy re leased l ast No vember, we p roposed r isk- based l icencing o f premises t o pro vide a f inancial i ncentive for them to change their business models.

“16 months ago, a proposal went to Barry O’Farrell’s cabinet for risk-based licencing

“I’ve s aid t hat t he G overnment s hould start c ollecting d ata on a lcohol s ales s o we can look at things like the incidence of domestic violence.”

And i n ju st over a y ear NSW voters w ill be he ading to t he p olls for t he 2015 State Election, w ith M r R obertson p repared t o fight for every vote.

“I think it is fair to say many people don't pay a ttention u ntil i t i s c lose t o e lection time but that's not to say they don't understand the value of their vote when they go to mark their ballot paper,” he said.

“They want us to g ive t hem reasons for their v ote... a nd whe n I sp eak t o m any people in th e c ommunity, th ey s ay th e O’Farrell G overnment h as not b een what they were expecting.”

Mr Robertson said that the State Government has “wasted the last three years”.

“We h ave b een ou t t alking t o e xperts and others in the community about what policies are important so that if given the chance to take government, we don’t end up l ike th e c urrent government, w asting the first three years, and particularly the first t wo y ears, c onducting c ommittees, inquiries and reviews,” he said.

In 2014 Australian Red Cross is proudly celebrating 100 years of people helping people.

Part of the world’s largest humanitarian movement, Red Cross has been woven into the fabric of Australian life for 100 years during times of war and peace, in response to natural disasters, through our world class blood service and increasingly through our everyday work helping the most vulnerable people in need.

“Red Cross is proud to celebrate this important milestone in Australia’s social history,” said Australian Red Cross CEO, Robert Tickner.

“Though the nature of our everyday work has moved with the times, our

school and are looking to undertake an apprenticeship.

From the first half of 2014, more than 1,100 people will be given the opportunity to undertake the ‘Trade Readiness’ program. The program consists of four days of intensive hands-on vocational training and assessment with a fifth day involving exit interviews, career advice, counselling and literacy and numeracy checks.

“This program is a win for both apprenticeship hopefuls and employers,” Mr Piccoli said.

“The NSW Government has committed $650,000 in 2014 to the ‘Trade Readiness’ program, which will help to put more young people in NSW on the right career path.”

Woman indecently assaulted in Marrickville

Older man assaulted with a wooden chair leg

About 2.15am on Monday, a 42-year-old woman was walking along Warren Road, Marrickville when she was approached from behind by a man who forced her into another street and pushed her against a wall. It’s alleged the man indecently assaulted the woman and punched her in the face before fleeing toward Livingstone Road. Officers from Marrickville Local Area Command were alerted to the incident and attended a short time later.

They conducted an extensive search of the surrounding area, but the man was not found. The woman did not require any medical attention. The offender is described as Caucasian in appearance, aged in his 40’s, with a fair complexion, around 170-175cm tall with short grey hair.

Police have charged a man following an alleged armed robbery in Petersham.

About 12.15am on Friday, January 24, 2014, a 54-year-old man was at a home on Fort Street when a 49-year-old man known to the older man visited him.

A short time later, the younger man allegedly assaulted the older man with a wooden chair leg and fled the scene with cash. Emergency services were called and the older man was treated for head, leg and shoulder injuries.

About 3.20pm, the younger man attended Marrickville Police Station, where he was arrested and charged with ‘robbery armed with offensive weapon causing wounding’.

He was refused bail.

Police have seized prohibited drugs following a search warrant at Marrickville on Thursday, January 23. In July 2013, Detectives from Newtown Local Area Command commenced Strike Force Jupp to investigate the supply of prohibited drugs around the Newtown and Sydney Metropolitan area. About 10am, officers executed a search warrant at a home on Woodcourt Street, Marrickville.

During the search police allege they located 126 bags of heroin with a total weight of 62 grams, as well as a large sum of cash and other drug paraphernalia. A 32-year-old man has been charged with seven counts of ‘supply prohibited drug’.

outlined the indiscretion by Cr Phillips said in part, “the complaint made against Cr Phillips was related to the disclosure of information c ontained i n a c onfidential report”.

The letter said a complaint was made and referred to a n independent rev iewer who investigated t he i ssue a nd a rep ort w as sent b ack to C ouncil – a c opy of wh ich i s available on Council’s website.

The i ndependent rev iewer f ound evidence that Cr Phillips’ actions had constituted a “ serious breach of t he Code of Conduct”. On March 19 last year Council asked Cr Phillips to apologise for breaking the code of conduct. Cr Phillips refused.

Due to Cr Phillips’ refusal to apologise, he was suspended by the Chief Executive of the Division of Local Government from his d uties a s C ouncillor f or t wo mon ths, but t he C ouncillor p lans t o a ppeal t he decision.

Cr M acri, w ho w as M ayor a t t he t ime, said this appeal is a “publicity stunt”.

“The i nformation w e d iscussed beh ind closed doors in December 2012 was confidential as no decision was made regarding the L ewisham T owers d evelopment. C r Phillips bre ached t he c ode of c onduct by divulging i nformation t o t he publ ic,” C r Macri said.

In addition to their overall happiness, 90 per c ent b elieve t he d ecision w as f inan-

cially beneficial, and 91 per cent reported an improved or consistent social life.

“As w e a ge ou r hou sing re quirements change: grab rails, no steps and removing trip h azards i n sho wers e xtend p eople’s independence a nd g ives t hem d ignity,” said Mary Wood of the Retirement Living Council.

“Importantly, the report finds that retirement villages are affordable and accessible for all. 78 p er cent of village residents are age pensioners, and 70 per cent report that the cost of living in a village is the same or less than their living costs in their former family home,” Ms Wood said.

The NSW Government has finalised landmark coal seam gas (CSG) reforms which see safeguards in place for approximately 5.3 million hectares of the State’s homes and high quality farmland.

Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner, Minister for Planning and Infrastructure Brad Hazzard and Minister for Resources and Energy Anthony Roberts made the announcement this week, saying the reforms struck the right balance for communities and industry.

“Today marks a significant milestone in this Government’s commitment to balance the energy needs of the State and the need to support our vital agricultural industry,” Mr Stoner said.

Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal, the Guardianship Tribunal and the Administrative Decisions Tribunal.

NCAT will also review decisions by government agencies about licences for taxi drivers, security guards, real estate agents and others.

“It’s expected that NCAT will receive hundreds of applications a day – or more than 80,000 in its first year. If experience in ‘super’ tribunals interstate is anything to go by, numbers will increase as people become aware of its fast, affordable and easy to access services,” he said.

More than 260 NCAT members will hear matters at up to 70 locations in metropolitan, regional and rural areas such as Balmain and Sydney CBD.

“Coal seam gas exclusion zones are now in force for an estimated 95 per cent of dwellings covered by current petroleum

“These comprehensive reforms provide clarity,” Mr Roberts said.

“Students w ill b e a ble t o t ake p art i n a range of r aces and novelty events like the noodle race and ping pong event,” Northcott’s R ecreation S ervice M anager J odie Wilkins said.

“In the past the carnivals have only been open to students with physical disabilities but t his y ear w e a re g oing bi gger a nd opening it up to students with intellectual disabilities as well.

“The c arnivals a re f ully s upervised b y Northcott s taff who w ill b e on h and t o ensure each student taking part has the fun they deserve.”

How does fitness feature in your life?

Confession time! I’m still working on the idea that I’m fit and active. I have always thought of myself as lazy and spec tacularly uncoordinated. There is lots of evidence to the contrary, but it goes to show how much you can hold yourself back with your thoughts.

I’ve always been small and skinn y, and as a health professional I’ve always adv ised others ho w important ac tivity is, however it’s really only been in the last two years that I’ve had a consistent fitness routine.

I realised I was just skinny, not fit or strong, and I wanted to change that. I’ve had enough false starts at gym memberships to know that wasn’t going to work. I need to be accountable to someone, I’m also a bit of a nerd, I need to know I’m “doing it right”. So I started personal training twice a week... I love it.

Three top tips for good health 1. There are man y wa ys to do “health y”. Kno w y ourself, physically and men tally. D o wha t w orks for y ou. J ust because ev eryone is doin g c ross fi t and Paleo doesn ’t mean you have to. You might love them, but you might also love walking your dog and freshly baked bread!

2. Throw away your scales. Focus on improving your health, forget about your weight. If you are making changes that are healthy for you, your weight will settle where it should.

3. Get help. If y ou really wan t to do somethin g to impro ve your health and y ou don ’t kno w where to start, don ’t waste time bein g o verwhelmed. Da ys, mon ths, y ears slip away too quickly. Make a phone c all, try a dietic ian, psychologist, personal trainer , exercise physiologist. G et a great team to help y ou get started and y ou won’t ever look back!

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy.’

I kno w tha t the more time I spend thinking about i t the less lik ely I am to do i t. I t’s tha t Nike slogan “just do i t”.

I’ve also learned tha t m y moti vation comes after I’ ve started, tha t migh t sound w eird, but if I wai t for moti vation, I’d never get off m y butt, but 5- 10 minutes in I g et a bi t of a r ush and feel so glad I started.

An adventure worthy of Crusoe A trip to the island where Robinson Crusoe was stranded... it might prove more challenging than you think, but worth it!

he “real ” R obinson Cr usoe had a unique wa y to stop himself going whacko during his years marooned on an island in the South Pacific.

He taught feral cats to dance on two legs, parrots to sing questionable sea shanties, and himself to slay wild goats on the run for food and clothing.

And while it is possible to take a holiday on h is remote island home, today named Robinson Crusoe Island, you just need to be a bit adventurous.

Originally n amed M as a T ierra a nd t he largest of Chile’s Juan Fernandez Islands 700km ou t i n t he P acific, i ts n ame w as changed some years ago in a bid to encourage tourists to the area.

It hardly attracted the hordes, as getting there is just about as problematic today as it was i n 1704 for Robi nson Crusoe, ac tually a S cotsman named Alexander Selkirk who was Mate aboard the British privateer Cinque P orts, t hat h ad b een e njoying some p lundering a round S outh A merica until developing an unhealthy leak.

As I was casually doing some grocery shopping the other day, I glanced over at the woman standing beside me in line and I had to do a double-tak e. There she was, standin g in line at Coles in the mid dle of the da y in her p yjamas – at least, I thought they were her pyjamas.

I glanced back a second time, appalled tha t someone would step outside (note: pyjamas are always fine inside the home – not out) w ithout chan ging f rom the clothes they wore for over 12 hours, from the night before.

On my second glance I started to doubt my initial conclusion – she was w earing makeup, sandals and had her hair neatly pulled back in a ponytail.

The only thin g letting her do wn was the bagg y pyjamaish shorts she was w earing with her plain whi te tee – was it possible tha t she was ac tually w earing shorts tha t just looked like pyjamas?

I paid for m y groceries and left the store but I co uldn't stop thinking about this woman's shorts so, I hit the shops to investigate.

Having not been near a physical clothing shop in a while (I am c urrently c razy about online shoppin g), I was amazed a t the amoun t of bagg y, patterned shorts I could find – they all look ed like pyjamas but clearly were not!

I d idn't st op a t s imple b rowsing, I t ook p iles i nto the change rooms and eventually bought a black and white patterned pair of shorts.

Modelling them for various f riends, family members and my boyfriend, I had mixed responses.

Some were positive they were pyjamas, others had to handle the fabric before making a decision and others boldly admitted they would wear them out w ithout a second thought.

Comfort was a hug e advan tage to w earing these shorts so, convincing myself I could pull the p yjamalook shorts off, I got styling and prepared to wear them out. They were actually really comfortable!

Eye p roblems a re a b ig s ource o f discomfort for pets. Because the eyes have such a rich ner ve supply, they are exquisitely sensi tive to the aff lictions of inflammation and infection.

They a re k nown a s th e ‘ windows t o the soul’ in people, and I believ e they are in animals too. But would you know what to look for if y our pet’s eyes were SAM in danger?

4. Cloudiness Any cloudiness in the ey e is not normal and needs to be investigated, as c ataracts as w ell as inf lammatory conditions affec ting the back of the ey e c an c ause cloudiness which may or may not be painful.

Eye diseases are being better managed by veterinarians than ever before, so it’s important to see your vet if any of the above conditions are noted.

I have seen a lot of people o ver the y ears but I ha ve never seen a person sick or o verweight from eating too much g ood nutritious food. Next time you’re standing at a checkout look at the amoun t of bars and junk surroundin g y ou. There ’s enough calories to feed a starving country within arm’s reach, only problem is the people ea ting that stuff would still suffer from malnutrition – and unless w e eat good healthy food as well then those sick people will be us.

So ho w do w e find good healthy food, when there are big companies who priori tise makin g money o ver our health ?

Firstly ignore the packaging like a dodgy salesman; educate yourself. C artoon charac ters and w ords tha t sound health y, like ‘lo w fa t’, ‘no ms g’, ‘na tural colours’ and ‘high in iron ’ could be found on a bo x of cereal but coul d describe a c an of paint as well.

Something lik e ‘High in Omega 6 ’ sounds g ood, un til y ou know the average modern diet has wa y too much omega 6 in relation to other essential fats, which is linked to heart disease, stroke, cancer, immune system damag e and hormone imbalance. Best option? Don't buy packaging.

Rip open the cookie packet and throw them straight in your trolley! Okay, ma ybe not, but buy i tems tha t ha ve minimal packaging. If it still looks like it did while it was growing, that’s a good start.

Secondly, always read the in gredients list, they are listed in order of amount used. We can’t afford to be brainless consumers, companies are pushin g the limi t of wha t they c an put in a wrapper and c all food. Sugar , f lour, salt are v ery cheap and easy to mak e taste nice. But put ting stuff in y our mouth doesn’t mean you’re feeding yourself properly.

If you want to feel good and have energy all day, eat the food that can make it happen. G ood nutritious food w ill have you bouncing off the walls. Y ou know how you’ll feel after a la te night eating chips, piz zas and a drink too man y, but y ou can be sure when you eat good, fresh whole food y our body c an repair, heal and feel a whole lot better for it.

hen P ete M urray released his sopho more album ‘F eeler’ back in 200 3, he had no idea tha t i t w ould become the six -time platinum behemoth that it eventually did – in fac t, the affable STEPHEN BISSETT

“I honestly though t tha t album was destined for absolute failure,” he said.

“I kind of had this post - album blues and I kind of ha ted the album for a lon g time – I coul dn’t ev en listen to i t f rom start to finish – until recently when Darren Middleton f rom P owderfinger c alled me and said ‘I’ ve just been listenin g to ‘Feeler’, and it’s a bloody good record’.

“So, I finally decided to listen to it from start to finish, somethin g like eight years after I recorded it and I have to admit that it is a pretty good album.”

With the album recen tly g etting the remastering t reatment a t A bbey R oad Studios, w ith a bonus disc fea turing the Bulgarian S ymphony Orchestra performing the album in full, mix ed w ith the original album masters, M urray is set to embark on an e xtensive na tional tour to celebrate the album’s 10th birthday.

While Murray was a relative latecomer to the world of music, pickin g up the gui tar at 22 while pursuin g a c areer in sports medicine, he has defini tely tak en to this singer- songwriter thin g lik e a duck to water w ith subsequen t albums ‘ See The Sun’, ‘ Summer a t Eureka ’ and ‘Blue Sky Blue’ sending him further in to the Aussie folk- rock s tratosphere. M urray s aid t hat he could pinpoint the very moment where he realised that he was on the right track.

“Once w e started g etting a fair bi t of airplay, we did a show at the Bar Broadway in Sydney and we rocked up to the gig and there was a line down the street,” he said.

“I though t tha t someone else was on who was g oing to steal m y li ttle c rowd.

Anyway I opened the sho w w ith the last song on the album, ‘ Ten Foot Tall’ thinking it would be a quiet little song to start the sho w and ev eryone, somethin g lik e 400 people, were singing every word.”

Not one to rest on his laurels, M urray said that after the tour wraps up, he is planning to head back to the studio for a follow-up to ‘Blue Sky Blue’.

“Yeah, I’m always writing and I do plan to ha ve somethin g new recor ded b y the end of the y ear – the ne xt one w ill be the last one for my record company so I’m at a really interesting point in my career.”

The band’s bassist, Frank Allen, believes that his group ’s lon gevity c an be a t least partially a ttributed to their refusal to get involved in the seedy under world of the entertainment industry.

“We w ere nev er v ery rock and roll… we li ved a v ery, v ery modera te lifestyle, totally an ti- drugs and not tha t much drinking either. I met them [Allen’s band-

mates] in Hambur g, which was pret ty manic, and people w ere g oing c razy out there, people includin g The Beatles were going mad and poppin g all sorts of pills and fornicating all over the place,” he said.

“We w ere alwa ys the g ood guys, the clean- cut guys… bec ause of the lifestyle we led, i t meant that our health sur vived all these y ears and w e were able to carry on for 50 years.”

Whatever the reason for The S earchers’ impressively long stint in sho w business, they are still maintaining a hectic touring schedule around the world.

Get ready for the Winter Olympics I must say I was in two minds about the return episode of ‘Home and Away’ this week. All summer the show had been hyping up a main cast member dying in the cliffhanger bomb blast, instead when the dust (and smoke) settled the only character to die had a minor role in the show. All in all I can’t complain too much, Irene lived and Alf was there to save the day yet again.

Huge news earlier this week over the apparent “dumping” of Channel Seven newsreader Chris Bath from the coveted 6pm bulletin.

Bath, who had been in the role for five years, was dramatically demoted to two nights a week (Friday and Saturday) to make way for regular fill-in Mark Ferguson.

The network is undecided about which direction to take their news bulletin in.

Still with Seven, and former newsreader Ian Ross has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given just five months to live. Roscoe is a legend in the news biz and it’s really sad seeing all these legendary newsmen struck down with such terrible diseases of late.

Breakfast guru Adam Boland resigned from his post at Channel Ten last week. Boland, who had been going through some well publicised personal problems, decided to give his rather stressful lifestyle up to focus on getting better. I hope he returns to TV one day.

The Winter Olympics wouldn’t be the same without funnymen Roy and H.G. and thankfully we’ll get a huge dose of the comic duo once again from February 7. The pair will return with their hilarious antics in a nightly show.

“The experience in Japan will be remembered as one of the most important for the development of fencing i n Australia. T he Japanese I nstitute of Sp ort a nd S cience and t he Na tional T raining C entre w ere ‘home’ for the entire team,” he said.

Mr Signorello said each of the Australian fencers had the opportunity to train with the J apanese Oly mpic te am me mbers, some o f w hom w ere s ilver m edallists a t the London games.

22 ju niors took part i n t he tour a nd one of the major highlights was the chance to compete in the Japanese fencing competitions, which attract over 200 competitors.

Whilst all came away with great experi-

ence, three Australians really stood out.

“Current A ustralian un der 1 5’s ch ampion, Alexander Douglas, got into the top eight in the men’s Sabre, whilst Boston Fawkes, a lso 1 5, a nd i s a lso t he c urrent Australian u nder 2 0’s c hampion i n S abre also got into the top eight,” Mr Signorello said.

“Beatrice H ay, 1 5, who r anked s econd in the Australian under 17’s also got a t op eight pl acing i n Japan a nd Hong Kong i n the ‘foil’ event.”

Trial matches loom The Jets will have three trial matches in the lead up to the VB NSW Cup

T

he New town J ets are only three weeks a way f rom g etting the r ugby league season under way w ith trial matches starting on February 15.

The first match will be at Morry Breen Oval, Wyong when the Newcastle Knights take on a Roosters outfit, with some of the Jets players taking the field alongside the Roosters.

Trial match number tw o w ill see New town go to Penrith when they take on the Panthers at Cen trebet stadium on F ebruary 23. The match will kick-off at 4.30pm.

On March 8 the VB NSW Cup season opener will start, but the bo ys f rom New town ha ve a bye and w ill travel to Dapto instead where they will take on Dapto.

Newtown’s first VB NSW Cup competition game for 2014 will be in round two on Sunday, March 16 at Ringrose Park, when they take on Wentworthville. Kick-off is at 3pm.
