W

ith Marrickville fast overtaking Surry Hills as the home of Sydney’s best coffee and cafes, Beejays café and wine bar looks set to secure its place as one of the latest hot spots of the inner west. At only 19, owner Benjamin James, whose initials are the source of the café’s name, has employed a bevy of seasoned baristas and bar staff to ensure the standards of food and drink served soar. With a new menu set to be launched next week, Beejays is about to become one of the better-known players on the Marrickville circuit. A quick trip to the café and it’s not hard to see why. Jazz standards and modern tunes soothe out of the stereos as relaxed guests laugh and a friendly waiter chats to guests. Guests can enjoy the sunshine at the café’s front-ofshop stool or street-side seating, which allows you to gaze at busy Illawarra Road as you enjoy an espresso from Toby’s Estate. Inside seating includes an outdoor area with walls decorated in an array of retro items, like old pedestrian crossing buttons and vinyl records. 395 Illawarra Road, Marrickville.

Enjoy the beauty of Beejays.

nnandale’s Revolver Cafe sits off the busy main drags of Booth and Johnston Streets inside a corner store dating to 1893. Today, it’s one of the inner west’s best kept culinary secrets, with its luscious home-made cakes and slices made on-site daily by the talented Revolver chef, Helen, with the help of her three dedicated kitchen staff. Its coffee blend, Morgan’s, is carefully hand-crafted and roasted at Emu Plains, at the base of the Blue Mountains. With its equal focus on food and drink, Revolver is the perfect place to stop for a snack or to stay a while and sink your teeth into a solid meal. Owner Marc Olding said the specials board is updated daily to keep things fun for Revolver regulars. “One of our most popular breakfast items is the ricotta hot cakes, which come with optional maple syrup,” he said. Some of the other popular menu items include the Revolver big breakfast, the “old school thickshake”, even the cafe’s humble cheeseburger goes above and beyond the basics to create a mouth-watering, gourmet dish. Go on, try it this weekend! 291 Annandale St, Annandale

Your Baby Can Read. He loves it….it really teaches them. He has such a wide vocabulary and I really believe it’s because of this little programme Miranda Kerr talking about her son Flynn using Your Baby Can Read.

The Your Baby Can Read! programme is a fun, multisensory approach to teaching language. The programme works so well because it is easy for a child to connect the written word to the word sound, and the meaning of the word. By utilizing this approach to teaching, children have a greater chance at reading success! Your baby will see the words, hear the words, say the words, see images and videos related to the words, the words are always used in context and your child is encouraged to do an action related to the words. Your child will SEE, HEAR, SAY and DO! Your child can learn to read as easily and naturally as he or she learns to talk.

our premier source of local news, sport, entertainment, life, style and business is waiting on your doorstep each weekend. The Inner City Weekender has it all; from the breaking news headlines to the latest in health and entertainment, you can be sure to fi nd something of interest within the local paper’s pages. A team of dedicated journalists join with regular columnists to bring the Inner City’s people the stories that they want to read. “We are a local voice for the people of Marrickville,” said Managing Editor, Troy Dodds. “The people of Marrickville deserve their own paper, not a paper that covers other areas as well. People want to be able to read truly local news, sport and entertainment, and we provide that. “The paper has emerged as an enormous success since it launched in 2010 and it will only grow.”

The wide circulation of the Inner City Weekender provides the perfect opportunity for local businesses to get their names out into the community with editorial content and advertisements. The Inner City Weekender covers suburbs across the Marrickville LGA, delivering to homes, businesses and key locations across the city. The team of editors, journalists and sales representatives are dedicated to providing Marrickville, and its surrounding suburbs, with a quality publication. As the only publication dedicated to the area, the Inner City Weekender has the ability to focus on the inner workings of the community, providing a thorough coverage of all the happenings in the area. If you’d like to advertise in the paper, call Toni Porter on 0447 007 507, or email toni.porter@ innercityweekender.com.au. For editorial enquiries, email vanessa.watson@innercityweekender.com.au.

Keeping fit around town

I

f you’re one of those people that like to keep themselves fit and healthy, or perhaps you plan to be one of those people in the future, then the city of Marrickville has a wide range of activities and facilities to get you on your way. Jump in a pool The Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre at Enmore Park is a state-of-the-art facility, which opened after a refurbishment in December 2010. It features a 50 metre pool, learn-to-swim and leisure pools, a café, multipurpose room/crèche, and a wellness centre including fitness and gym facilities. Go for a run The Inner City’s parks and reserves provide a wide range of active recreational opportunities for all ages with walking, jogging and running amongst the most popular choices. The range of parks in the area include heritage parks at Petersham, Camperdown and Enmore, a green corridor along the Cooks River and an expansive recreation reserve at Tempe – along with many local playgrounds, sport fields and pocket parks. It’s a great way to keep healthy and fit.

Play a team sport The Inner City area is jam-packed full of local sporting clubs that cover an extensive variety of sports to suit all ages. More than 20 male, female and mixed sports are available to the community including soccer, netball, rugby league, rugby union, cricket, dancing, martial arts, swimming, tennis, basketball and many more. See page 30 of this directory for a detailed list. Enjoy a cycle Cycling is fast-becoming an exciting alternative to get fit in the Inner City area. Marrickville Council has developed and is continuously upgrading a range of on-road cycling facilities to make streets in Marrickville safer and easier for bicycle riders to use. A range of off-road cycling facilities also exist. These paths enable riders to travel on a paved surface away from cars. Walk your dog Marrickville Council provides off leash dog exercise areas within the Inner City, some on a full time basis and others on a time-share basis. They include Tempe Lands, Sydenham Green, Enmore TAFE Park, Camperdown Memorial Rest Park and O’Dea Reserve.

Tips to keep you fit and healthy By David Stein

I

have been receiving lots of questions lately about which gym to join or trainer to go to. So what does make a gym right for you? Can your attendance and the enjoyment of your training be affected by which gym you use? Quick answer, absolutely. If you are at a gym with all the best equipment but really don’t enjoy being there, you’re quickly going to fi nd reasons not to go. If you have only ever walked into the one gym you haven’t got much to compare to. Just like any industry there is good and bad examples. If you walk into a gym and you get a look like ‘what are you doing here, the donut shop is across the road’ then that’s a problem with them, not you. Turn around and walk out. But not across the road to the donut shop! You might put up with a careless shop assistant to buy a pair of shoes you like but going to the gym is different as you have to see this same person maybe 3 or 4 times a week. Look for a place that when you spend some time there, you feel like it might actually be enjoyable to come back to. Same goes if you walk into a gym and the guy jumps the counter and starts pumping your hand giving you

a prepared sales pitch, like some slick estate agent on steroids. If you have to fi ll out ‘contract’ forms before you’re even allowed to look around I would be looking elsewhere. Clients’ wants should be more important than a sales commission. Check the ‘extra’ fees that might be involved, a big sign saying membership $2 a week could end up being more like $12 a week. If the actual price for membership is a big secret or more complex to work out than your mobile phone rates, they’re hiding something. Take the time to look at a few different places. The sign up now and I’ll waive the joining fee line the salesman is giving you will still be on tomorrow. Ask your friends or people at work. Try the little places as well as the big ones. Do a week trial. Look at all your options. One question came in this week about a workout for time poor people. One effective simple method is, get back to basics, work as much muscle as you can as hard as you can in whatever time you have. Th is is where intervals are good. An interval type workout is where you can do all out sets of exercise broken up by rest. Read more from David in the Inner City Weekender.
