GM TO LEAVE Marrickville Council General Manager Ken Gainger has announced his resignation to take up a new position at Byron Shire Council.

Mr Gainger, who was a resident and ratepayer of Byron for 18 years, said that while he had mixed feelings about leaving Marrickville Council three years into his five-year tenure, he couldn’t pass up the chance to return home.

Long-serving Marrickville inspector retires

F

ormer Marrickville Police Inspector Edward Billett APM was one of five retiring police officers who ‘marched off ’ the parade ground at the Goulburn Police Academy last week.

During his service, he was awarded the National Medal and 1st and 2nd Clasps, the 6th Clasp to the NSW Police Medal and National Police Service Medal.

Mr Billett joined the NSW Police Force on February 17, 1969 as a police cadet, graduating on September 30, 1971. He was sworn in as a probationary constable on October 1, 1971 and performed general duties at No.9 Division.

In 1973, Mr Billett transferred to No.20 Division Police Transport Section and remained there until October 1975. He then transferred to General Duties at No.32 and No.1 Division.

On May 27, 1979, Mr Billett transferred to the Police Prosecuting Branch where he remained until July 1995. Between July 1995 and June 1997, he worked as a Senior Sergeant Patrol Tactician at Lakemba Patrol.

On July 1, 1997, Mr Billett transferred to Marrickville Local Area Command and relieved as a duty officer before becoming an inspector and duty officer in 1999 and remained at Marrickville until his retirement this year.

his is my fi nal column for 2012 and as such I hope you’ll allow me to indulge for the next 400 words or so and reflect on what has been a remarkable year.

We welcomed in a new Council here in Marrickville, and watched as so many issues played out on the pages of this newspaper.

The hundreds of stories we’ve presented to you this year in The Inner City Weekender each make up a jigsaw puzzle of a city so steeped in history, tradition and multiculturalism.

I’d like to thank all of those who play a part in the jigsaw puzzle, because the Weekender family is large and varied.

Firstly, I would very much like to thank my small but dedicated team of journalists who bring you the stories that shape our city each week.

Vanessa Watson is our on-the-ground reporter and has done a tremendous job bringing to these pages the big issues, as well as the feel-good community stories that make our area shine.

I’d also like to thank Louise Bourke and Jordan Cox for their efforts with our editorial content this year.

I’d like to thank all of our regular columnists and contributors, including Peter Overton, Sarah Stewart, David Stein, Elisha Stein and Francis Bevan.

Thank you to all of our story subjects in 2012 – answering that phone call or email from our journalists is very much appreciated.

Most of all, on behalf of everyone at the paper, I would like to thank you – our

readers – for your continued support.

Thanks to all of those who entered competitions, wrote letters or simply picked up the phone to say hello. We certainly appreciate every piece of feedback that comes into our office.

We are not connected to any of the major media players, and remain an independent voice for the people of the Marrickville Local Government Area.

We are very, very proud to represent this city and want to ensure that our connection with you, its residents, is as strong as possible.

Each week when you pick up this newspaper, we hope you feel you get the most complete snapshot of our area you could hope for, because that’s our aim.

We fi nish 2012 in a position to be proud of, and can guarantee you that you will see continued growth in the publication next year.

We enter 2013 with the promise of building on the foundations we have already laid, not resting on our laurels, and presenting to you the roller coaster ride of a year that it will almost certainly be.

I would like to wish each and every one of you a very happy Christmas, and all the best for the holiday period.

Importantly at this time of year, I would also like to remind each of you to ensure you drive safely, after all, we want to see you all back reading the paper again next year.

It is a deadly time on our roads, and after driving to Queensland and back last weekend, I can see why so many tragedies occur on the Pacific Highway, so if you’re heading north, make sure you stop, revive, survive and follow the speed limits.

Our team will be back on deck on Monday, January 14 and our fi rst edition of 2013 will be released on Friday, January 18.

If the tragedy in the United States this past week has taught us anything, it’s that at this time of the year, nothing is more important than family, and being together.

Rest up, drink up and have a great break over the holidays.

New officers join Marrickville Local Area Command For the new police offi cers joining the Marrickville station, their arrival in the local area is just the first step of their policing careers... arrickville Local Area Command welcomed five new officers to the area after they marched off the parade ground during the latest attestation ceremony held in Goulburn last Friday.

The five probationary constables will join their new colleagues and strengthen policing in the community after being assigned to Marrickville Local Area Command.

Marrickville Superintendent Greg Peters said the officers will face an extremely challenging but satisfying career and this is just the fi rst stage in their development.

“I am very pleased to welcome these new recruits to Marrickville Local Area Command and look forward to overseeing their development as they embark on this exciting and rewarding career,” Superintendent Peters said.

Red tape burden NSW Local Government Minister Don Page this week said he was aware of concerns expressed by the business community about the amount of red tape associated with local government and is actively taking steps to tackle the problem.

Mr Page was responding to concerns about excessive red tape in local government that were raised in the NSW Business Chamber’s Annual Red Tape Survey.

“I agree that small business is the engine room of the State’s economy and the Liberals & Nationals Government is doing everything it can to fight the scourge of red tape,’’ Mr Page said.

Marrickville Mayor Victor Macri said that Mr Gainger was seeking a lifestyle change and had the opportunity to return to the community that he regards as his home.

Handbag stolen from car: Witness calls police after seeing incident unfold Marrickville Police are investigating a theft from a motor vehicle on Ann Street, Marrickville on Saturday, December 15. A witness called police after allegedly seeing two females breaking into the vehicle. Police arrived a short time later and noticed a silver van at the location with a smashed driver’s side window. The owner informed police at the scene that her black handbag had been taken from within the vehicle. arts of Tempe Reserve may pave the way for the proposed WestConnex motorway at the expense of local green space, according to Marrickville Greens councillor, David Leary.

The former Tempe Tip site was touched on during debate this month over the provision of limited local green space and whether to install artificial turf at Arlington Oval at Dulwich Hill.

Cr Leary claimed the WestConnex motorway would likely cut overland through Tempe Reserve but vowed the fight to save the reserve from the proposed motorway is far from over.

“I will say categorically that Tempe Reserve is not yet dead. There are many of us in the community who are fighting the WestConnex motorway,” Cr Leary said.

“To those of you who have given up on Tempe Reserve, please have faith, we will save it.”

The WestConnex project, the highest priority project recommended by Infrastructure NSW in its State Infrastructure Strategy in October, would see a tunnel built from St Peters to Taverners Hill via Camperdown, to link the west with Sydney Airport and the M5.

The 33-kilometre tollway will link Sydney’s west with the airport and the Port Botany precinct. The plan also includes an extension of the M4 east of North Strathfield and duplication of the M5 East to King Georges Road.

Premier Barry O’Farrell recently confi rmed his commitment to build the 33 kilometre road within 10 years and committed $1.8 billion to the $10-$13 billion project.

“We said we would start work on one of Sydney’s missing motorway links in this term of government and WestConnex is that project,” Mr O’Farrell said.

In reference to Arlington Oval, Marrickville Greens councillor Max Philips said he was not in favour of artificial turf anywhere in the Local Government Area but “if we were to do it, we should do it somewhere like Tempe Reserve”.

“I’m not sure the freeway is going to take the whole Tempe Reserve up,” Cr Philips said.

When asked for a WestConnex route map, a spokesman for Roads Minister Duncan Gay told the Weekender specific routes for WestConnex have not yet been fi nalised and questioned how Marrickville councillors could possess detail not yet drawn up by the Sydney Motorways Project Office.

Marrickville Police are investigating a break and enter at a restaurant on Parramatta Road, Petersham, last Saturday, December 15. About 11.40pm, unknown offenders forced entry into the restaurant via a ground floor rear door. A taxi driver was assaulted by a female passenger last Thursday night, December 13. The driver, aged 37, picked up a woman from Homebush and headed to Marrickville when the woman, who appeared to be heavily intoxicated, began arguing with the driver.

The driver drove to Marrickville Police Station after the woman became extremely aggressive and attempted to gouge his eyes out while he was driving. Police spoke to the woman who was eventually driven to her Chipping Norton home because of her high level of intoxication. The taxi driver did not receive any injuries as a result of the assault

ow can a parent drop their child off to school only to later be told they’ll never be coming home?

To me, like so many others this in inconceivable. But somehow it did happened.

20 innocent children, their teachers and principal all killed, less than two weeks before Christmas.

But what makes even less sense to me is how easy it is to buy a high powered gun right across the US. Quite simply it’s stupid and irresponsible. I mean why would anyone want a semi-automatic weapon in their house?

And why on Earth would you possibly need more than one? The accused killer used weapons registered to his mother.

He didn’t steal them, or smuggle them into the country, they were legal and sitting in his house. To most Australians the whole idea seems ridiculous. But what is just as unbelievable, or hard to understand is the fact that Americans aren’t getting rid of their guns – they’re buying more! Over the past week gun sales have sky rocketed with more people acting on their “constitutional right” to bear arms. Some have even gone as far as to suggest the teachers at the school where the massacre happened should also have had guns in their classrooms, to be able to fight back. To

me this is absolutely absurd. Can you imagine a loaded gun sitting in a room with dozens of six-year-olds? Guns should be nowhere near children.

And they defi nitely should not be carrying them. It’s beyond belief that in the days following the tragedy an 11-year-old was caught carrying a gun to school to ‘protect’ himself. I mean how does a child get a gun, put it in his backpack and take it to school with no one noticing? My only hope is that this senseless and devastating event will make someone in a position of power actually think about change. President Obama says it’s time for “meaningful action”. But I say it’s time for a major overhaul. Time to get rid of the guns and stop the massacres. In Australia gun laws are tight and that’s the way they should be. We should be able to send our kids off to school or go to a shopping mall without fear. But my fi nal thought is for the children, the innocent victims taken far too soon and their families. May you all rest in peace and may your families fi nd comfort in each other.

Council to use video for educational purposes

A

king tide on the Cooks River was caught on fi lm by Marrickville Council staff last Friday morning to create educational material about climate change.

A council spokeswoman said fi lming commenced from about 2.30am when the tide was at its lowest until about 9.30am on December 14.

She said the tide was meant to peak at 2.04 metres but due to weather conditions was actually 17mm lower.

“The video will be used for educational purposes and to help people understand that with climate change, these events are going to become more severe and regular as sea level rises,” the council spokeswoman said.

The king tide video will be available on the Marrickville Council website in 2013 and forms part of the Witness King Tides Project.

The project aims to look at what the impact of sea level rises could look like for people living on Australian coasts.

King tides are a natural phenomena that occur twice a year.

As the highest tides of the year, they offer an opportunity for the public to understand what sea level rise projections might look like in their local community.

Marrickville Council has thrown its support behind a national campaign for local government to be recognised in the Australian Constitution.

Earlier this year, the council agreed to contribute to a national awareness campaign by the Australian Local Government Association who called for the issue to go to a public referendum in 2013.

The campaign for recognition specifically relates to fi nancing and if successful would give power to the Federal Government to directly fund local government directly.

The council has tabled a submission to the Joint Select Committee on Constitutional Recognition of Local Government, due to meet this month, which reinforced the council’s March resolution.

The resolution supported the inclusion of local government in any new preamble to the Constitution if one is proposed; called on political parties to support a referendum by 2013 to change the Constitution to achieve this; and write to the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and the Federal Member for Grayndler to advise them of its support for constitutional recognition.

Council projects already in direct receipt of federal funds include the Roads to Recovery Program and other infrastructure initiatives that allow for the maintenance of ageing assets.

Marrickville Mayor Victor Macri said while the changes have strong bipartisan support, a widespread public awareness campaign would be essential in enabling a successful referendum outcome.

“Constitutional recognition is about both the practicalities of governing at a local level and a matter of principle,” Cr Macri said.

“Constitutional recognition would ensure funds are directly allocated for key Council services which are being squeezed by the dual pressures of rising costs and increasing community demand. Comments: Vanessa.

Art gives voice to local youth Incredible 33-metre mural shows off skills of students

or art teacher Shane Forrest, it’s fitting that the art history mural he’s painting with students lies in Cave Lane, Dulwich Hill.

It’s like art coming full circle, from its beginnings on prehistoric cave walls to the postmodern street art etched in spraypaint on brick in an inner west laneway.

The Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design teacher said the mural, titled Modernism, forms part of an ongoing ‘art history walls’ project at the school.

“We’re trying to turn all the lanes in the immediate vicinity of the school into art history walls,” Mr Forrest said.

“We want the uniqueness of the school to emanate out into the community.”

The 33-metre mural is being brought to life by 12 students from Years 9-12 and is aimed at teaching participants about the chronological narrative of art history.

It begins with Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, one of the most important modernist pictures, travels through the likes of Duchamp and Matisse, and ends with appropriations of work by a wellknown street artist of the ‘80s, Keith Haring.

Marrickville Youth Resource Centre youth worker and local street artist Tom McDonald, who once painted with Haring, is helping put the project together.

Mr Forrest said instead of leading up to a so-called ‘high art’ image, the chronological mural makes a point of showcasing urban street art.

“The most important thing is that adolescents see themselves in the community. You drive around and you see people’s houses and the parks, but you don’t actually see kids’ voices very much, you see this commercial chatter,” he said.

“When you see a piece of street art, you see the actual voice of young people speaking in the community. I think that’s really important.

“We tried to make a piece that had some sort of conceptual depth. A good painting, you shouldn’t get it straight away. So it’s showing that there’s a chronology to art but it’s always an argument, or a discussion.”

The Cave Lane mural is a joint initiative between Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design, Marrickville Council and the Marrickville Youth Resource Centre.

Over the past eight years, students from the school’s Street Art Club have painted pop art and surrealist art history walls in the school’s surrounding laneways.

Mr Forrest said he hopes, over time, to turn all the alleyways in the area into a huge, open book of art history for the community, while teaching the students involved skills in planning, negotiating, designing and art practice.

He said the success of the murals was clear, due to the lack of graffiti covering them.

“They haven’t been tagged, they haven’t been destroyed,” he said.

“The walls opposite this one are just covered in tags and the new lessee for part of the wall opposite has already asked us to design something for next year.”

Airport debate continues Albanese fires shots at O’Farrell, saying his head is “in the sand” ederal Grayndler Labor MP Anthony Albanese has called on NSW Liberal MPs to ‘come clean’ to the public over whether they support Premier Barry O’Farrell’s idea to increase the number of fl ights to and from Sydney Airport and limit its curfew.

In a media release last week, Mr Albanese said the consequences of Mr O’Farrell’s opposition to a second Sydney airport would mean Sydney residents would be subjected to greater aircraft noise from earlier in the morning and until later at night and would be subjected to more fl ight movements.

“What this means is more noise very early in the morning and very late at night – a practical end to the curfew, which is an unacceptable outcome for communities already impacted by aircraft noise,” Mr Albanese said.

“Under Barry O’Farrell’s plan, the restriction on the number of fl ight movements every hour would increase from 80 to 85. In addition, the NSW Coalition government want fl ights taking off and landing after the curfew of 11pm and additional fl ights before 6am in the morning.”

Mr Albanese said Mr O’Farrell can’t continue with his “head in the sand” over the issue of a second airport, which is a long-standing talking point.

“The clear conclusion of the Joint Aviation Study co-written by the Federal and State Government is that Sydney needs a second airport – sooner rather than later.”

does not support a second airport in the Sydney basin, which is why we need to ensure the existing asset is being fully utilised.

“As I have said repeatedly, Sydney Airport is a matter for the Commonwealth but we want to see maximum efficiency achieved at the facility – because the economy of NSW depends on it,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“We would like to see an increase to the fl ight cap from 80 to 85 fl ight movements per hour during peak periods. There should also be an increase in fl ight movements during the curfew shoulder period to the level allowed in the Sydney Airport Curfew Act 1995.”

He stressed the NSW Government does not support removal of the curfew, changes to protections for existing regional fl ights, or further expanding or reconfiguring the runway capacity.

Last Thursday, the NSW Government unveiled a proposed joint approach with the Commonwealth to boost capacity at Sydney Airport, to ensure ‘maximum efficiency’ of the asset.

The plans for the Sydney Airport Port Botany precinct were included in the NSW Government’s 20-year State Infrastructure Strategy and were based on recommendations from Infrastructure NSW. “In addition to these solutions, the NSW Government has previously announced it will upgrade the major motorway connections servicing the precinct through the WestConnex project,” Mr O’Farrell said.

ell we’ve finally reached the last edition of the year and for the year’s final Chatter on the Box I’ve decided to run through some of the hits and misses of 2012…

Best Talk Show He’s someone that I’m constantly critical of but this year Rove McManus has outdone himself with his Los Angeles-based show ‘Rove LA’. While not every episode has been outstanding, they are all right up

there. The way Rove gets three celebrity guests interacting and opening up during his show is clever and for once he’s not going down the cheap laughs route, which plagued his former Channel Ten show.

Best Sporting Spectacle It was hard to go past all the triumph and drama of this year’s London Olympic Games. Channel Nine did a reasonable job of producing the Olympics but Foxtel’s coverage was far better.

Best Channel In just its very first year, Foxtel’s A&E is the best channel of 2012 without question. I’m serious, how can you not love shows like ‘Pawn Stars’, ‘Cajun Pawn Stars’, ‘Storage Wars’, ‘Hardcore Pawn’, ‘American Pickers’, ‘American Restoration’, ‘Lizard Lick Towing’ and ‘Axe Men’. Best

Television Innovation We have a tie between Foxtel’s GO app and Foxtel’s TV Guide app. Both smart device applications have changed the way I watch TV this year and I commend Foxtel for being the leader in television apps.

The Worst of the Worst It was too hard to pick just one, so without explanation here are my worst shows of the year: ‘Excess Baggage’, ‘The Shire’, ‘Being Lara Bingle’, ‘Anger Management’, ‘Everybody Dance Now’, ‘I Will Survive’, ‘Breakfast’ and ‘Brynne: My Bedazzled Life’.

Most Anticipated Show of 2013 Chris Lilley’s new ABC1 comedy will be the one to watch next year. Let’s hope Chris produces something out of this world with this new show.

Best Australian Reality Show This year has to be the return of ‘Big Brother’ to our screens. Even though Nine left us without ‘Uncut’ and ‘Up-Late’ editions, this year’s ‘Big Brother’ was still pretty damn entertaining. It featured a great bunch of likeable and villainous housemates, most of the challenges were brilliant and the addition of social network interaction was fantastic. Many people criticise this show for some reason or another but have you noticed that all the harsh critics have never actually watched a single episode? I can’t wait for this to return in 2013.

Best Talent Show It was very hard not to give this award to ‘The Voice’. What Channel Nine did with this program was outstanding. They cast four brilliant coaches in Keith, Delta, Joel and Seal and found some really unique talent. I think what made this show was the format. The Blind Auditions and Battle Rounds were so unique that each episode had close to two million viewers, which in this day and age is unheard of. Who knows what’s in store next year for the show with Ricky Martin on board but I do know I’ll be tuning in.

he Australian Rugby League Commission has this week approved the removal of the ‘benefit of the doubt’ call and supported a change in the way video referees are called on to make decisions in

a meeting that has fi nalised a series of key on-field issues for 2013, including a resolution of State of Origin eligibility.

he Inner West Ultimate Frisbee League will open its ranks to new players when it returns to training at Tempe Reserve on January 9.

League treasurer Wally Crocker invited anyone interested to join in for some free Frisbee skills training before a match on the day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a really fun mixed sport of men and women playing together, non contact, a lot of running, a lot of fun and very social,â&#x20AC;? Mr Crocker said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s defi nitely a social league. People can sign up as teams or as individuals and then weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll put them on a team. Like the hats league, where basically names are picked out of a hat.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Crocker, of Darlington, said although the sport has a strict rule set, it is selfrefereed at all levels, including at world championships. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You score like in American football by catching the Frisbee in the end zone but you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t run with the disc, like in netball. We use the pivot foot. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have to interact with the opposition and get along with the oppositionâ&#x20AC;Ś You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a referee to run to to argue with.â&#x20AC;?

The Inner West Ultimate Frisbee League is hoping to attract new players.

Mr Crocker said the league was formed in summer 2009 and started at Marrickvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Steel Park.

He said the league attracted about 70 ultimate Frisbee players during the spring 2012 season, which saw the Astrogliders
