GM TO LEAVE Marrickville Council General Manager Ken Gainger has announced his resignation to take up a new position at Byron Shire Council. Mr Gainger, who was a resident and ratepayer of Byron for 18 years, said that while he had mixed feelings about leaving Marrickville Council three years into his five-year tenure, he couldn’t pass up the chance to return home.

Long-serving Marrickville inspector retires

F

ormer Marrickville Police Inspector Edward Billett APM was one of five retiring police officers who ‘marched off ’ the parade ground at the Goulburn Police Academy last week. During his service, he was awarded the National Medal and 1st and 2nd Clasps, the 6th Clasp to the NSW Police Medal and National Police Service Medal. Mr Billett joined the NSW Police Force on February 17, 1969 as a police cadet, graduating on September 30, 1971. He was sworn in as a probationary constable on October 1, 1971 and performed general duties at No.9 Division.

In 1973, Mr Billett transferred to No.20 Division Police Transport Section and remained there until October 1975. He then transferred to General Duties at No.32 and No.1 Division. On May 27, 1979, Mr Billett transferred to the Police Prosecuting Branch where he remained until July 1995. Between July 1995 and June 1997, he worked as a Senior Sergeant Patrol Tactician at Lakemba Patrol. On July 1, 1997, Mr Billett transferred to Marrickville Local Area Command and relieved as a duty officer before becoming an inspector and duty officer in 1999 and remained at Marrickville until his retirement this year.

Last Friday, NSW Police Force Commissioner Andrew Scipione paid tribute to the remarkable careers of Inspector Billet together with Assistant Commissioner Paul Carey, Detective Superintendent Terence Dalton, Superintendent Michael Kenny and Superintendent Anthony McWhirter. “The service provided to our state by these retiring officers cannot be measured. They have been dedicated and have served our communities during their remarkable careers. “Their dedicated service will be recognised on this parade ground by their colleagues, family and friends.”
