Living history project will fill the void of burnt records BASIL NAIMET

ewtown Public school will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2013 and wants past students, teachers or members of the community to share their stories and contribute to the memorabilia.

Legend has it that the written records of the school were burnt in an incinerator during the 1960’s.

So, to celebrate the anniversary, the school is putting together a ‘living history project’ that will fi ll the void of the missing written records.

Abbey Proud the Principal of Newtown Public school said the project also known as the ‘150 project’ will involve every child in the school.

“The children will research local people, places and events, interview former students and recreate historic photos. The project will run throughout the year, with scheduled completion in September,” she said.

“It will capture the imagination of the children and connect them to the heritage of their community.”

The project will coincide with a digital oral story-telling project that will culminate in the screening of the documentary that the children

The City of Sydney Council has given a grant to the school to aid the making of the oral documentary, to be shown at the Dendy Theatre, Newtown in September. After the screening it will be archived at the City of Sydney Council and the school.

hilst on an overseas trip in 2010, Julia Gillard quipped that she would rather be at home in a classroom reading to students.

What a difference 25 Prime Ministerial trips in 23 different countries makes. She now looks more comfortable on the world stage than she does at home facing domestic politics.

Love or hate Julia Gillard, this deal with China is historic. It’s a big deal.

The biggest since Gough Whitlam in the 1970s made a bold move and visited the communist controlled state and opened up the dialogue.

To this day only three other countries have the same access – Russia, Germany and the UK. I’m told the United States struggle to even get a meeting with the Ministry of Finance (NDC), let alone any kind of partnership.

Just one month after the new regime was formally ushered in, Julia Gillard has managed to hold face to face meetings with the number one and number two leader – President Xi Jingping and Premier Li Keqiang.

When the world is falling over each

other to get into the Chinese market, forge deeper ties and latch on to China’s extraordinary growth, Australia has trumped them all.

For a former Education Minister more comfortable at home in the classroom, Prime Minister Julia Gillard might be best remembered for her achievements overseas.

She secured a strategic partnership with India last year and now China.

The two most populous countries in the world that will produce 3.5 billion middle class customers over the coming decade.

These customers will want to travel, drink good wine, eat good food and have the good life.

hen you rush around getting ready in the morning, between packing lunch boxes and making sure you’re not wearing odd socks, very little thought is given to the fact that when you walk out the front door, you may never go back through it again.

The fragility of life has been somewhat in focus this week with one freakish incident on a rugby league field in Coffs Harbour stunning the community.

15-year-old Jake Kedzlie was accidentally struck by the knee of an opponent whilst playing an under 16’s match for the Sawtell Panthers last Saturday.

A few days later his family made the agonising decision to switch off the machines that were keeping him alive.

They lost their baby boy. The story’s more public twist came when it was revealed that Jake was the grandson of league great Tommy Raudonikis.

It didn’t make the story any more heartbreaking than it already was, but for many it probably brought home the harsh reality of it.

Raudonikis has always been seen as one of the giant larrikins of the game;

Parents should never have to bury a child

always smiling and telling stories from his glory days.

For most of us, we probably didn’t even give a second thought to what was below the surface. Th is week, we saw Tommy stripped bare and the emotion he displayed was heart-wrenching.

Parents and grandparents should never have to bury a child; but the pain of it being simply not “in order” is matched by the fact that when you look at your kids, you look at hope, dreams and possibilities.

The fact that 15-year-old Jake ran onto the footy field on Saturday and lost his life, proves how precious every moment really is, and how what we worry about in our day-to-day lives is sometimes so inconsequential, that it is embarrassing to even think about it.

On a side note, and the Logie goes to...

Well, I didn’t know until I woke up on Monday morning. Why does Channel Nine persist in showing the event on delay? Why are there no Australian musicians performing at an event that celebrates, er, Australians? How does Joel Madden, an international music superstar, win Best New Talent?

An overhaul is certainly needed.

State funding links people with a disability and artists BASIL NAIMET

he Ministry for Arts and Ministry for Ageing and Disability Services are tipping in more than $520,000 to support projects across NSW for people living with disabilities to enhance their creative and artistic skills.

Minister for the Arts, George Souris said the money will target a range of projects that will support people with disabilities get access to professional artists. “The funding is part of the $1.5 million the Government has committed to boost access and inclusion in arts and cultural activities for people with disability across NSW,� he said.

An affi liation of The Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, ‘Roomies’ on Addison Road, Marrickville, will be the recipients of approximately $37,000 to create the ‘Encore project’.

Carol Hamilton the Community Linking Project Manager for the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre says the funds are welcome and will help the centre meet the objective for supporting the people who will use Roomies. “The encore project is a visual arts program that is designed to help residents who are living in assisted boarding houses. The residents and accommodation they live in come under the Department of NSW Ageing and Disability Home Care,� she said.

Many of the residents have mental, physical and intellectual disabilities.

Local impact of TAFE cuts: Community groups will suffer BASIL NAIMET

AFE Community Alliance for the Inner West has launched a campaign in support of TAFE NSW’s stand against the State Government’s $1.7 billion cuts to the education and training budget and the Smart and Skilled program.

Last Friday the Member for Marrickville Carmel Tebbutt confi rmed her support for TAFE NSW and their central role in providing vocational education and training, whilst condemning the Government’s cuts and its affect on community groups in the inner west region.

“Here in the inner west the outreach programs through TAFE have been particularly important in linking people who are marginalised and vulnerable with training and ultimately [employment,” she said.

General Manager of Addison Road Community Centre organisation, Rosanna Barbero, who is affi liated with the Alliance, says there are over 30 groups in the inner west that will suffer directly and indirectly as a consequence of the funding cuts.

“There are not-for-profits that will be affected. TAFE provides these organisations with skilled people who

t Peters Anglican Church will celebrate its 175th anniversary with a thanksgiving service to be delivered by Archbishop Peter Jensen at 10am on May 12, 2013.

The church was originally a temporary structure of ironbark slabs with a shingle roof and used for worship on May 13, 1838. Using free labour it took just 18 months to build; its fi rst official worship was November 20, 1839.

“For the fi rst time in 100 years NSW is facing the demise of a public provider of vocational education and training,” he said.

“Across the state, TAFE NSW is suffering staffi ng cuts. Petersham TAFE is one of those. Barry O’Farrell’s Government is making us less smart and less skilled.”

Dulwich Hill: Break and enter while sleeping Marrickville Police are currently investigating a break, enter and stealing incident that occurred in a unit complex in Williams Pde, Dulwich Hill. The incident took place on Wednesday night, April 3. The occupants of the unit went to bed around 10.30pm on Wednesday night. The following morning about 8.30am, while the occupants were getting ready for work, they had noticed that a handbag and wallet had been taken. At this time, one of the occupants had noticed the rear door slightly open.

Car collides with power pole: Lewisham About 4.50pm on Thursday, April 4, a driver of a Holden Astra was travelling south on Old Canterbury Road, Lewisham. It was about this time the driver was distracted by a parked Ferrari. Whilst the driver was distracted the vehicle in front had slowed. The driver swerved to avoid a collision, however due to the wet conditions the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a power pole. Fortunately no one was injured as a result of the collision.

he number of male teachers looking to enter the profession in NSW public schools is falling. Male teachers are underrepresented throughout Australia, with only 19.5 per cent of the profession in NSW public primary schools recorded as male last year.

Although the figures paint a grim picture there are those like Ed Lonsdale from Marrickville Public School who simply have teaching in the blood.

“I chose to be a teacher because both of my parents are teachers. I’ve always enjoyed teaching music – morally the profession sits comfortably with

me. I’d rather pursue teaching than pursue a career within a corporation,” he said.

When asked what his friends think about him being a teacher he says they are all supportive and encourage him.

An attribute Mr Lonsdale brings to the school is his piano playing skills that Principal Kerry Chambers admires and thoroughly enjoys.

“Ed brings a positive aspect to the school. He plays the piano for the children at the start of assembly each morning. The children clap in appreciation of him playing. It adds a nice touch,” she said.

When I ask the question about monetary gain, Mr Lonsdale is quick to respond: “I’m here because I love to teach, not for the money”.

Marrickville Football Club looks to Cahill and McCulloch for guidance BASIL NAIMET

he Marrickville Football club is drawing on important local and national figures in the sport of soccer to continue the club’s growth this season.

The club is proudly supported by former Marconi and international representative Tommy McCulloch and current Socceroo and New York Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill.

“Tim was a junior at Marrickville Football Club, and would be considered to be the greatest achiever the club as ever had,” Club President Ron Royston said.

“When he comes to Sydney he tries to pay us a visit. A couple of years ago he was here signing autographs for the kids in the rain. He is a lovely man.”

The club boasts the biggest number of participants in the Marrickville area with 1,100 players, 150 coaches and managers and over 80 teams registered for the 2013 season.

“We would easily be the biggest sporting club in the Marrickville area,” he said.

The large numbers reflect the way the club operates, and can be attributed in no small measure to 92-year-old Bruce Livingston who founded the club in 1946 and is still a role model in the local sporting community.

New agreement signed NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and Local Government Minister Don Page signed a new agreement with Local Government NSW to guide relations between the NSW Government and councils across the State.

The agreement includes a provision on cost-shifting and principles that will guide government relations.

Guide Dog Week 2013

On Monday, April 22, guide dog trainers and Guide Dogs NSW Ambassador, sports commentator Andrew Voss, whose family has recently been touched by vision loss, will transform Martin Place into a temporary guide dog school. Puppies, partially trained and fully trained guide dogs will go through a series of obstacles to demonstrate the different training stages.

Construction of the new Petersham Park playground and barbecue facility is scheduled to begin this week and will be completed in July 2013, weather permitting.

The playground area will be closed to all public access during the construction. The remainder of the park will be open.

The works will include: demolition of the existing playground; minor earthworks and removal of one tree; new playground including new play equipment, combination of rubber and mulch softfall surfacing, paving, and entrance area featuring a large seating deck; new barbecue and picnic table settings; upgrade of the pathway between the playground and Aquatic Centre; and new landscaping including advanced tree planting, garden beds and turfi ng.

Live music plan

Labor Councillor Jo Haylen will ask Marrickville Council to take the next step for live music and join with the City of Sydney and Leichhardt Council to look at developing a cultural precinct along Parramatta Road.

The upcoming motion, if passed, will see Marrickville Council work with Leichhardt Council and the City of Sydney to investigate what policies and programs can be implemented to support the development of the section of Parramatta Road between Sydney University and Taverner’s Hill.

“At the moment Parramatta Road is somewhat of an urban wasteland and there is a real opportunity for it to become a vibrant cultural precinct with more small bars and theatres,” Cr Haylen said.

The motion also includes measures local councils can adopt to support both performing artists and live music venues. Cr Haylen believes if councils can provide more planning incentives for live music, the rewards will be reaped for the area through an improved late night economy.

State Minister for Family and Community Services, Pru Goward, yesterday announced that the O’Farrell Government will contribute $2 million for larger warehouse facilities for Foodbank NSW, so they can help another 100,000 hungry families and individuals throughout New South Wales.

“Foodbank do wonderful work in NSW donating food and groceries that otherwise would be dumped from over 450 food manufacturers and retailers,” Ms Goward said.

“Th is funding will support Foodbank NSW’s aspiration for a bigger distribution centre, to improve services and lives for vulnerable people and families in our state.

Bruce Springsteen has also been helping Foodbank at his recent Sydney concerts with $70,000 raised from his efforts.

“Foodbank currently supports over 53,000 NSW families and individuals with over 100,000 meals every week, over half of which are delivered in regional and rural NSW,” she said.

What you eat can impact your skin health ne of the biggest motivations to adopt a more nutritious diet is the desire to improve skin health.

o you’re training hard and ‘hit the wall’ and feel your body just can’t give anymore. Here is a study to consider: Samuele Marcora, an exercise physiologist at Bangor University in Wales, fi rst started to question physical failure in exercise after working with victims of a muscle-wasting disease that caused extremes of fatigue. He noticed that their perceptions of how tired they were, fluctuated much more quickly than their actual condition.

With no other way of explaining the rapid changes, he theorised that they were regulated by the brain.

When he started applying this idea to sports science, Marcora came up with an experiment that changed how people think about fitness. After recruiting 10 athletes from Bangor University’s rugby team, he put them on exercise bikes, hooked them up to power meters and put them all through the same three-part test.

First, they were told to pedal as hard as possible for just five seconds.

Between them, the test subjects managed an average wattage of 1,075, which is about what you’d expect of well-trained athletes.

Second, they were told to pedal at a fi xed power level, averaging out at a reasonable 242 watts, until they simply couldn’t sustain it any more. Th is part

of the process usually took 10 to 15 minutes. Finally, with no rest after fi nishing part two, they were told to pedal as hard as they could for another five-second, all-out effort.

According to the catastrophe theory, the subjects shouldn’t have been able to put out more than 242 watts, since they’d just failed at that level thanks to some sort of physical breakdown.

Instead, however, they managed an average of 731 watts.

They’d stopped because they couldn’t stand the pain of pedalling any more, but when they were told to go for another five seconds they cranked up the intensity – because they only had to do it for five seconds. The well-trained, mentally tough sportsmen hadn’t suffered some sort of physical catastrophe. They’d given up. Next time you’re feeling spent at training and about to stop, ask yourself if that is REALLY all you’ve got!

ocal stand-up comedian Justine Rogers is set to hit the stage in two dynamic and highly original acts as part of the 9th Annual Sydney Comedy Festival 2013.

Since her 2011 debut at the Roxbury Hotel at Glebe, she has entertained numerous outlets with her craft, alongside her day job as a legal academic. Rogers will host Nerd All-Star Comedy Gala at the Factory Theatre on May 7 and will perform in comedy trio Aggressively Helpful at the Seymour Centre on April 25 and 27.

“Aggressively Helpful is a blend of classic, individual stand-up and group sketch, music, dance and cupcakes,” Rogers said.

“The cupcake thing comes from our shared ambivalence towards cupcakes. On one hand we see them as a simple visual and oral delight and on the other, a symbol of passive aggression and competitiveness among women and fetishisation of 50’s housewifery.”

Rogers’ desire to seriously pursue comedy grew out of spending seven years studying in the UK and being exposed to its world-class comedy scene.

Nerd All-Star Comedy Gala, a spin-off of a regular night she co-hosts and co-organises, Nerd Nite Sydney, combines her two loves – comedy and academia.

The event showcases seven acts, which Rogers has curated to appeal to a wide audience. They will cover themes like sex and gender, why people are mean and extraterrestrial life.

“Experts will share their knowledge in ways that are exciting and accessible with

comedians peppered throughout, including Dan Ilic from Channel Ten’s Can of Worms and Jazz Twemlow from ABC2’s The Roast,’ she said.

Sea Eagles take a 38-10 dive to the Jets who proved too good he Newtown Jets are back on course after a solid 38-10 win over ManlyWarringah at Brookvale Oval last Saturday afternoon.

The Jets scored four tries in the fi rst half and led 20-4 at half-time. They added three more tries in the second half to lead 38-4.

The Sea Eagles, who had come into this match with some quality performances couldn’t match the Jets, however in the back end of the second half managed to keep Newtown at bay.

Newtown’s fi rst half tries came through doubles to acrobatic wingers Paul Rokolati and Usaia O’Sullivan.

Both wingers have developed intelligent partnerships with Jets halfback Ryley Jacks, whose accurate kicks to their wing positions provides them with chances to score convincingly.

Two of Newtown’s fi rst half tries also featured quick and accurate ball-handling skills that created overlaps for the wingers.

The Jets enjoyed a glut of possession in the fi rst half along with a rare 10-3 advantage in the penalty count.

The Jets snuffed out any hopes of a Sea Eagles revival by scoring two quick tries early in the second half.
