Rabble and raucus as Arlington turf war explodes VANESSA WATSON

ebate over what surface should be installed at Arlington Oval descended into rabble at Tuesday night’s Council meeting. Security was posted at the door of the packed council chambers, which were fi lled with residents holding placards opposed to ‘plastic grass’ and representatives of local soccer clubs keen to see the Dulwich Hill facility upgraded. Speeches by members of the public for and against artificial turf were marred by cat calls,

curses, raspberries and shouted insults from opponents. At one point, residents started yelled at the Deputy Mayor Emanuel Tsardoulias to “get him out”, “order”and “expel him” while he spoke about the debate being “out of control for a number of reasons”. “We’re not going to go down the line of character assassinations,” Cr Macri said. Earlier in the evening, Cr Macri asked the 33 public speakers registered for the Arlington Oval item to decide amongst themselves which seven people would speak, to prevent the meeting from running too late. Resident and longtime football player, Chris Ferreira, compared the ground’s surface to a paddock and cited safety issues for players. “We ought to try to balance and compromise... Quite frankly, people have to learn to get along,” Cr Mark Gardiner said. A motion was eventually passed to have a detailed analysis done of all options for Arlington so councillors can make an informed decision.
