Absolute disgrace Anzac memorial plaque stolen from historical gates BASIL NAIMET

A

bronze plaque that was erected on Petersham Park Anzac gates has been stolen. The theft of the important piece of Marrickville’s history has been labelled a disgrace. Marrickville Council believes the rising price of bronze, gold and copper across the country may be the reason. “I think most people would agree it is extremely disrespectful to steal a war memorial plaque,” said Marrickville Mayor, Victor Macri, who was outraged at the news. According to Monument Australia, a website documenting important historical artefacts, the Petersham Park Anzac gates and pillars were originally part of the Petersham Town Hall and were re-erected in their current location in 1921. The Mayor believes there should be measures put in place to prevent such an abhorrent act from occurring again. “There should be tougher measures applied across the scrap metal industry, including mandatory reporting of suspicious items,” Cr Macri said. He urged local residents to report suspicious behaviour to police to prevent the theft of bronze plaques in memorials around the local government area. Sadly, Petersham Park is not the only place thieves have struck. A plaque at the former electricity substation at 134 Lennox Street, Newtown has also been stolen. The substation has historical significance according to the Council’s Heritage and Urban Design advisor. According to Council, the substation is a prominent piece of Marrickville’s history as it represented the early 20th century period when private companies supplied electricity infrastructure to households. It was a symbol of the development and expansion of electricity infrastructure in the 1930’s. Anyone with information on the thefts should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

ell, here we are. The culmination of a long three years; and 33 days of official campaigning. For Labor, the leadership experiment has failed and I suspect the party is about to be punished for the bitter infighting that’s been a constant unedifying spectacle and a distraction. Kevin Rudd tore back the leadership less than three months ago. He promised a new leadership style and a new way of politics. He’s fallen far too short on that promise, and others. His announcements during the campaign appear ill thought out and have often confused and contradicted Labor’s message. Kevin Rudd re-adopted his 2007 strategy and campaigned on what he likes to refer to as the “me factor”. Well, the “Kevin from Queensland” character simply rubbed voters the wrong way this time. And from someone that has observed Kevin Rudd on the campaign trail for the last few weeks, it feels as though he is obsessed with his own personal vindication. And winning this election would be the ultimate vindication. Unfortunately for Mr Rudd he’s spent time spruiking plans so far into the future that the electorate just doesn’t believe him. The Northern Australia Plan, Garden Island relocation and High Speed Rail – all policy in the never never that looks, feels and tastes like policy on the run. Kevin Rudd has had a clear run. Julia Gillard maintained her dignity and her

distance. The Prime Minister has had to contend with a News Corp campaign against him – I’ll leave it to you the voter to decide the cause and effect of that. When it comes down to it, a party and/ or political leader should never be elected on their campaign promises alone. The incumbency of government means Kevin Rudd has a record – for better or worse. My take? Kevin Rudd doesn’t deserve another term, but I’m not sure Tony Abbott has done enough to deserve the Prime

Ministership. One of the Opposition Leader’s mantras is: “I want to under promise and over deliver for the Australian people”. But will he? All the polls point to a Tony Abbott victory on Saturday – and then it will be his job to deliver. Getting rid of the carbon tax, introducing an expensive and divisive Paid Parental Leave scheme and stopping asylum seekers from coming by boat. I hope he’s up to it.

ction on climate change continues to be the “elephant in the room” neither the Liberal Party nor Labor Party are seriously addressing, according to the Greens. The Greens candidates for the Senate and the Lower House from across the state met on Monday to highlight the challenges climate change would pose and the detrimental effects inaction by both major parties would have. Candidate for Grayndler, Hall Greenland, said the biggest issue facing this election was climate change and creating policies to address it was vital for an environmentally sustainable nation. “Climate is the burning elephant in the room in this election… in two weeks the next IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] will come out,” he said. “Th is will just add further weight and further urgency to the need for rapid action on climate change and decarbonisation of our economy – only the Greens want to talk about it and have the real solutions. “The Greens in the Lower House and Senate are the only real opportunity to stand up and act on what the scientists and economists are telling us we must do. “In the last week of this election we urge you to think about how your vote can directly impact the terrible outcomes of cooking the planet.” Labor has promised to move to an

GRAYNDLER DECIDES – YOUR CANDIDATES IN THEIR OWN WORDS Anthony Albanese – Labor Party

I

I

’ve spent my life standing up and fighting for people, social justice and environmental protection when they need help. Out in the world, the real world. That’s why I decided to run in this election. The challenges, locally and globally, ahead of us all are so large and complex and the status quo of politics is failing us. The two old parties behave like the Coles and Woolworths of Aussie politics. I am meeting people all over the

electorate who express strong opinions about refugees, education funding and climate change, as well as disappointment with the right-of-centre policies being legislated by the current representative and Deputy Prime Minister. After 17 years the voters of Grayndler are rightly questioning whether their values are being represented by Mr Albanese. And let’s be clear – this contest in Grayndler is between the Greens and Labor. The Greens have a proven track record in promoting policies which reflect the principles of the party and its membership – and clearly the people of Grayndler. Th is can no longer be said about the Labor party. It is a betrayal that a Labor government would cut payments to single parents, lock up refugee children and slash funding to universities. Just like Adam Bandt in 2010, I will not vote for Tony Abbott to be Prime Minister. Adam Bandt has delivered many achievements for his electorate of Melbourne and if elected I will deliver for Grayndler. It is because the Greens stood up for the environment and demanded climate action as part of the agreement with the Gillard Government that we have a price on carbon and the $10 billion Clean Energy Fund. The Greens are the only party with the practical and visionary policies that are up to the great challenges of the 21st century.

am proud to represent the area where I have lived all my life. I am proud to be part of a Federal Labor Government that stands for jobs, fairness, equality and opportunity for all. While the rest of the world is struggling with shrinking economies and high unemployment due to the Global Financial Crisis, this Labor Government has supported jobs by investing in infrastructure for the future. We have done this while maintaining

low inflation levels and low interest rates. In the Inner West, we have funded upgrades for every school and parks and facilities such as Fraser Park, Henson Park, Mackey Park, the Italian Forum Cultural Centre and the Cooks River revitalisation project. I am proud to be part of a Federal Labor Government that has a positive vision for the future. We are building a high-speed National Broadband Network that will take fibre directly to the home. We are increasing funding for every school in Grayndler through our Better Schools Plan. We are tackling climate change by putting a price on carbon pollution, and investing in renewable energy. We have also created the world’s largest network of marine reserves. We are investing in dental care, mental health services and better public hospitals. We are establishing Disability Care Australia to provide lifelong care and support to all Australians with a disability. If elected, Tony Abbott will take Australia backwards. He will stop action on climate change, abandon the National Broadband Network and cut funding for health, education and infrastructure. Only Labor can stop Tony Abbott becoming Prime Minister. Anthony Albanese is currently the Deputy Prime Minister of Australia and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport.

GRAYNDLER DECIDES Joel Scully – Bullet Train For Australia party

or the last 30 years the voters of Grayndler and Australia have heard politicians, industry and media talk about the need for high speed rail. In fact, we did the sums and worked out that since 1982 there has been

more than $49 million dollars spent on high speed rail studies, reports and proposals with little results. That’s why this party was born – not from a political lobby group or an off-shoot from one of the major parties. We are a group of everyday Australians. We’re sick of waiting for our politicians to commit to a critical piece of infrastructure that should have been built more than 30 years ago. High speed rail will be Australia’s greatest infrastructure projects ever undertaken. It will bring enormous benefits to Grayndler and Australia. It will boast the local and national economy. It will take cars off our roads and planes out of our congested skies. It will change the way people and families in Grayndler live and work. A Bullet Train will rejuvenate our dying regional areas by providing jobs and new industry while connecting individuals and families across our great country. Vote Bullet Train!

r Green is running for the Christian Democratic Party and has the endorsement of his party leader. “I am thrilled with the enthusiasm and quality of our CDP candidates who represent the grassroots of our society,”

said party leader, Rev Fred Nile MLC. The party is against same sex marriage. “I call on the decent Aussie voters who support traditional Aussie marriage between a man and a woman, NOT two homosexual men, to Vote 1 for CDP and then 2 for their favourite political party.”

The Cooks River Naturalisation Project will see 1.1 kilometres of deteriorating concrete slabs along the river bank at three sites in Canterbury, Campsie and Belfield naturalised with sandstone and native plants. “Th is project is a historic opportunity to

improve the river’s health and natural character,” Mr Constance said. “Th is is a significant investment which will improve the foreshore area and the river’s ecological health, providing a wonderful place for the local community to enjoy.” Key local councils, state agencies, service providers, local environmental groups and residents have been working with Sydney Water on the planning and design of the project Mr Constance said the naturalisation work will be complete by June next year if all goes to plan.

Cooks River receives $2 million for clean up

Gang Squad arrest: Man charged with drug supply Police from the Gangs Squad’s Strike Force Raptor have arrested and charged a man with drug and fraud offences. About 11.30pm last Friday (August 30), officers from Strike Force Raptor executed a crime scene warrant at a property on the Princes Highway in Tempe. Inside the building, police located and seized numerous items believed to have been used for the manufacture of illicit drugs, as well as a number of documents which police will allege were fraudulent. About 10.20am yesterday on Monday, police arrested a 28-year-old man at the same location the warrant had been executed. He was taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged with numerous offences relating to drug manufacture, drug supply and fraud. The man was refused bail and was scheduled to appear in Newtown Local Court on Tuesday. Strike Force Raptor was established by State Crime Command’s Gangs Squad in 2009. It is a proactive and high-impact operation targeting outlaw motorcycle gangs and any associated criminal enterprises. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

he Cooks River Alliance has secured major funding from the Federal Government for stormwater fi ltration systems that will reduce pollutants at seven priority sites. Local MPs Tony Burke and Anthony Albanese announced last Friday the Government would inject $2 million to help with the river’s cleanout. “The project will be driven by the local community and the Alliance will also work to restore the Landing Lights Wetlands, whose health is connected to the health of the river,” Mr Albanese said. He said it was vital residents who live along the Cooks River are made aware of the dangers of polluting the river. “There will also be a big push to make households more aware of the impact of their day to day activities on the quality of water in the Cooks River,” Mr Albanese said. Member for Watson Tony Burke whose electorate includes the Cooks River said for too long urban waterways were used as a drain and needed to be stopped. “The Cooks River runs through heavily urbanised and industrial areas and it’s an ongoing challenge to make sure the river and its foreshores are healthy so that they can continue to be enjoyed by the community,” Mr Bourke said. He said the improvement of the river was largely the work of the Alliance and the community; however more work needed to be done to get rid of remaining pollution. The $2 million would alleviate that issue. “Th is funding will help us consolidate the progress mate to date,” he said. The Cooks River Alliance was launched in

A spokesperson for Police NSW said a bullet had entered the dog’s abdomen and exited the left side rib. The dog is receiving care and under observation. The man was taken to hospital in a stable condition. No further details have been released at this stage. Police have established a crime scene at the location and enquiries are ongoing. ree food, freshly squeezed juices and free medical check ups are all part of the push for healthy living that will be promoted by Newtown Neighbourhood Centre on Monday, September 9, from 9.30am to 3.30pm. The event will aim to inform locals about healthy eating and drinking, the benefits of being physically active, and to promote awareness of issues such as diabetes, dental hygiene and Hepatitis C. Onesight will provide free vision

screening, and free blood pressure monitoring will be done by Stanmore Pharmacy and Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre. Medicare Local will also be attending with information about electronic health registration and after hours GP services. A free BBQ lunch will be served between 12.30pm and 2pm, with a focus on having a well balanced diet geared towards fresh food. Water and freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices will be donated by Food Connect and OzHarvest and available free of charge.

have heard some people say they don’t eat fruit because its sugar content is high. We should defi nitely be cutting out nutritionless sugar foods like soft drinks or processed junk but a bit of fruit should still be on a healthy menu! British, US and Singaporean researchers compiled data from three big investigations that took place in the United States over a quarter of a century in all. The result? Eating whole fresh fruit, especially blueberries, grapes, apples and pears, is linked to a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes, but drinking fruit juice has the opposite effect. People who ate at least two servings each week of certain whole fruits, especially blueberries, grapes and apples, reduced their risk of Type 2 diabetes by as much as 23 per cent compared to those who ate less than one serving per month. “Our fi ndings provide novel evidence suggesting certain fruits may be especially beneficial for lower diabetes risk,” said Qi Sun, an assistant professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. On the other hand, those who consumed one or more servings of fruit juice each day increased their risk of developing the disease by as much as 21 per cent. Swapping three servings of juice per week for whole fruits resulted in a seven per cent reduction in risk.

The paper, published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), speculates that, even if the nutritional values of whole fruit and fruit juice are similar, the difference lies with the fact that one food is a semi-solid and the other a liquid. “Fluids pass through the stomach to the intestine more rapidly than solids even if nutritional content is similar,” says the paper. “For example, fruit juices lead to more rapid and larger changes in serum (blood) levels of glucose and insulin than whole fruits.” The study also points to evidence that some kinds of fruit have a beneficial effect for health. Berries and grapes, for instance, have compounds called anthocyanins, which have been found to lower the risk of heart attacks. Remember a lot of the beneficial parts of food do not make it intact through processing. Always try for as fresh, organic and whole foods as possible.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN COMES BACK FOR MORE! T

hey’re known as one of the greatest rock acts on earth and now Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will be bringing their tunes down under for a thrilling show. The band will be touring Australia next year, performing at Sydney’s Allphones Arena on Wednesday, February 19. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band visited Australia earlier this year for the first time in more than a decade, with their Wrecking Ball Tour dazzling fans. Springsteen’s long-standing manager and producer Jon Landau said that the 2013 Australian shows were so enjoyable, the band were excited and enthusiastic to come back for more concerts. “Our shows in Australia earlier this year were among the very best and most satisfying of our whole 128 show tour,” Landau said. “The crowds were tremendous, the fans as warm, friendly, and welcoming as we could ever hope for, and the quality of the performances, as virtually every reviewer commented, were spectacularly high,” Landau added. Critics agreed that the Wrecking Ball tour was a smashing success, with the band’s energy and stage presence earning them the 2013 Helpmann Award for ‘Best International Contemporary Concert’. The Australian newspaper raved about Springsteen’s performances, writing that they will appeal to audiences of all ages: “An important artist of his or any generation, Springsteen remains possibly the most vital front man of the modern era. Long may he run”.

Springsteen has had a wildly successful career, with his 17 studio albums selling 120 million records across the globe. His songs are iconic and have stood the test of time, with radios still playing classics such as ‘Born in the USA’, ‘Born to Run’, ‘Hungry Heart’, ‘Atlantic City’ and ‘I’m

On F ire’. The veteran performer has received the Kennedy Centre Honours, and won 20 Grammy Awards, two Golden Globes, an Academy Award and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, New Jersey Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame and

the American Academy of Arts and Science. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will perform at Sydney’s Allphones Arena on Wednesday, February 19. For bookings or more information, call 132 849 or visit www.ticketek.com.au.

about its return.

‘MasterChef Australia’ crowned its latest winner last Sunday night with 32-year-old Emma Dean taking the top prize. It’s also been confirmed by Channel Ten that ‘MasterChef’ will only be back for one offering next year with no spin-offs planned. This is definitely a good move because it won’t make people sick of the show, allowing more people to get excited

In overseas news, the ‘American Idol’ judging merry go-round has shifted into gear again with jazz singer Harry Connick Jr. tipped to be the show’s new third judge. Sources say Connick Jr. is close to inking a deal which will see him sit beside Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez on the panel. If this rumour does pay off it seems ‘Idol’ is going for a very conservative panel this

One show that is sure to get people talking this Sunday is the Australian version of ‘The Bachelor’. The new Channel Ten series will premiere at 7.30pm and will no doubt do very well in the ratings. The ‘Sneak Peeks’ Ten have already aired look really promising and I’m sure both the men and women of Australia will be keen to see what’s going on.

year as opposed to last year, which featured feisty Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey. The finale of ‘Big Brother’ has been revealed with the show set to end on Wednesday, October 23. Meanwhile, the housemates had an interesting week this week with Labor’s Kevin Rudd, Liberal’s Tony Abbott, Greens’ Christine Milne and Palmer United’s Clive Palmer all leaving exclusive video messages to the housemates ahead of tomorrow’s election. This is the first time a Federal Election has been held during an Australian ‘Big Brother’ series and boy did it get the housemates talking. US drama ‘The Glades has been axed after four seasons due to poor ratings. The show starred Aussie Matt Passmore.

Lastly, Channel Ten have announced former Australian rugby international Matt Bourke will become their new sports presenter on the 5pm News. Bourke replaces Brad McEwan who is off to Melbourne to present the News down south. Channel Ten is fast-tracking new US mystery-adventure drama ‘Sleepy Hollow’ next Tuesday, September 17 at 9.30pm. The show centres around Ichabod Crane, a timid school teacher who is resurrected and pulled two-and-a-half centuries through time to unravel a mystery that dates all the way back to America’s founding fathers. Revived alongside Ichabod is the Headless Horseman, who is on a murderous rampage in present day Sleepy Hollow. The show stars Tom Milson, Nicole Beharie and Orlando Jones.

Stanmore reach their goal Hawks not only make the finals, but have qualified for division one competition BASIL NAIMET

ith around five weeks before the A-League football competition kicks off, the pride of the Inner West will have completed their assault in Football NSW’s State League division two fi nals. Local football fever has reached an all-time high as the Stanmore Hawks have fi nished at the top of the competition table. As a consequence they have not only secured their place in the fi nals, they’ve also cemented a spot in the State League Division One. Hawks president Tony Panteli said the effort to get the fi rst grade team to sit in fi rst spot was a collective effort, but ultimately the club’s goal was to fi nish fi rst in the club championships. “Being number one is a great achievement by all coaches, managers and players,” he said. “The most satisfaction I got all year was the way those groups conducted themselves on and off the park. They were all united. [Ultimately] we proved to people that we don’t belong in division two.” And that confidence has helped the club reach its goal. The future is looking bright for the Inner West club, whose development of younger players has been encouraging. Whilst Mr Panteli admitted the club currently didn’t have anyone who would be eligible to play in the A-League, the talent on show currently in their U/20’s was a good indication of potential for advancement. “We have a young player by the name of Michael Grace who is only 16-years-old, and from what I’ve seen of this lad I think he could play A-League football one day,” he said. Good luck Hawks!

Sport Jets need Reunion win Bulldogs must be stopped for Jets to stay in fourth place

T

he Newtown Jets and their old-time rivals Canterbury-Bankstown clash in the fi nal competition round of the 2013 VB NSW Cup at Henson Park tomorrow. It’s the Jets’ annual reunion day, and the home team desperately needs to win to retain their fourth place on the competition table and a second chance crack in the semi-fi nals. For the Bulldogs, 2013 has been a relatively lean year after they had won three consecutive NSW Cup premierships between 2009 and 2011. The Jets’ theme for this year’s reunion day is to pay tribute to the players of 1973, when the Newtown club won its only NSWRL Club Championship, the Flowers Memorial Pennant, under coach Jack Gibson. The Newtown Jets are primed to defend their 2012 NSW Cup premiership but like last year, it will depend on who will be available for the NSW Cup fi nals from their NRL partnership club, the Sydney Roosters. Tomorrow, Jets long-serving NSW Cup coach Greg Matterson will clock up his 150th game as coach, while veteran front-rower Khalid Deeb will be honoured for having played more than 100 games with the Newtown club. The NSW Cup local derby gets underway tomorrow at 3pm, at Henson Park.
