ulldogs and Rabbitohs fans are showing their colours in Marrickville as the two local teams prepare to meet in a grand final for the first time since 1967 when the Rabbitohs recorded a narrow 12-10 victory.

Cars are driving around flying team flags.

Houses are festooned with ribbons and balloons.

Tempe’s Selina Martin and her son Deonte Williams are Rabbitohs fans and went to the open training session at Redfern this week. Deonte plays for Alexandria Rovers in the Souths Juniors competition.

“We’ll win 42-0,” Deonte said confidently.

“We’re the best!”

Marrickville’s Kerry Mouratidis and her daughter Alexia went to the Bulldogs open day at Belmore. While Alexia was most excited about meeting fullback Sam Perrett, Kerry was chuffed to get a selfie with Bulldogs CEO Raelene Castle.

She nominated winger Mitch Brown as her favourite player.

“He’s a good kid. I taught him when he was at school,” Ms Mouratidis said.

Rabbitohs fan Kelly Fisk will be going to the game with her father leaving her seven-monthold daughter Sylvie with her husband for the day.

“We’ve waited so long for this. I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” she said.

Canterbury supporter Susan Elias said she and her daughters Jessica and Jorja were confident the Dogs would triumph this time around.

“We have more experience,” Ms Elias said.

History of Souths culminates in an interesting Grand Final

In Federal Parliament this week, the local member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese spoke of how much he was looking forward to going to this weekend’s grand final between South Sydney and Canterbury.

“It’s a tribute to those people in the community who stood together so Souths could stand alone when they marched for South Sydney’s readmission into the National Rugby League competition,” Mr Albanese said.

“Institutions such as Souths are the fabric that binds a community together and I pay tribute to all those who fought for their club to be allowed to play in the NRL. Go the Rabbitohs!”

Although not a Souths fan myself, I am pleased to see them back in the grand final, mainly for the sake of their long-suffering fans.

For years now we’ve seen them trudging forlornly down local streets dressed in green and red, sitting in the corner of the bar, unable to look at the screen and have their worst fears confirmed.

They’ve won more premierships than any other club but all those premierships came when it was just a Sydney competition, when the game wasn’t fully professional and the players worked as garbos and cellarmen during the week.

It was a working class game with working class players and fans.

As the competition expanded to gradually become a national competition, the inner city clubs started to struggle. Newtown and Wests were kicked out of the competition in 1983 – although Wests managed to earn a stay of execution by moving to Campbelltown and ultimately merging with Balmain.

Souths struggled but refused to merge and this led to them being kicked out of the competition in 2000 and 2001 as the NRL sought to rationalise the number of teams.

Then a group of high profile supporters rallied the faithful and got them marching on the street, demanding the club be readmitted, which it was in 2002 after a court ruling.

With their former players gone to other clubs and getting no favours from the NRL, the Rabbitohs struggled for the first few seasons back in the top flight.

In 2006, Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court stepped in and purchased the club against the wishes of club stalwart George Piggins. It seemed like they were fighting everywhere but on the field.

Gradually, the new team started to gel as the club made astute buys like Greg Inglis and the entire Burgess family.

A new coach, Michael Maguire, brought discipline and the Souths fans started to dream of glory again.

Most Souths fans you meet are old school working class. The Bunnies are particularly popular among the indigenous community and for many young indigenous boys, the road to South Sydney is the path out of poverty.

Most of them have never seen them play in a grand final. Even their high profile fans were all still in school the last time that happened in 1971.

Russell Crowe was auditioning for the nativity play. Andrew Denton was answering his teachers back and Anthony Albanese was plotting to overthrow the nuns.

So can they win?

When I was a kid, there was a rule of thumb that to win a grand final, you had to have played one in the past four years. This ‘rule’ held true for 43 years from 1949 to 1991 before Brisbane broke through to win a grand final in their first appearance in 1992.

Using this logic, Canterbury should be favourites, having played in the 2012 grand final, while Souths haven’t featured in the final game of the season since 1971, more than forty years ago, let alone four.

However, in 21 seasons since 1992, seven teams have gone on to win the premiership without having played in a recent grand final.

Two of these teams, Newcastle Knights and Melbourne Storm, won the title in their first attempt like Brisbane had done, so the Rabbitohs can have reason to believe this particular hoodoo has lost its sting.

Another rule of thumb said you can’t win from fifth (or lower). This rule had held true for all but one season from the introduction of five team finals series in 1973 through to the present day. By that token Souths should be favourite, having finished third compared to the Bulldogs’ seventh.

However, the sole time that rule was broken was in 1995 in the first year of eight team finals series when the Bulldogs themselves won four sudden death matches in a row to go from sixth to premiers. So they know more than anyone that it is a curse that can be broken.

Either way it looks certain to be a cracker of a game!

shfield Councillor Julie Passas has been selected as the Liberal Party candidate for the seat of Summer Hill at next year’s state election. Cr Passas describes herself as a moderate Liberal who loathes injustice.

“Growing up in the area, it was very hard, having Mediterranean skin when everyone else was white,” Cr Passas said.

She says Ashfield and Marrickville are now vibrant multicultural areas and lists one of her achievements as being the driving force behind establishing the Ashfield Carnival of Cultures.

She is also proud of improving road safety, youth services, getting a lift installed at Summer Hill Station to improve disabled access as well as all the little things that Councils do that aren’t always recognised.

“Whenever I see someone using a seat that I got installed, I feel so good about it.

That’s what matters,” she said.

“I understand the challenges facing families and businesses in our area, which is why if I am elected I will put our community first, right where it deserves to be.”

She admits her time on Council has been

controversial but says she is passionate about delivering outcomes for the local community.

“For too long the people of Summer Hill have been taken for granted. Our community deserves someone who is going to listen and fight for our area and that’s exactly what I will do in State Parliament,” Cr Passas said.

“At Marrickville station the other day, I thought I was in a third world country.

There was graffiti everywhere. I was absolutely shocked at the neglect. Luckily, the Liberal Government is investing in equal access at the station.”

Summer Hill is a new seat, which will cover Marrickville south of Addison Road, all of Dulwich Hill and most of the Ashfield local government area.

“Antony Green, who I have a lot of respect for, says we’re looking at a margin of about 12.7 per cent,” Cr Passas said.

“I know I’ve got a mountain to climb but things are changing. I’ll be working hard to give voters a real choice at the election.”

Cr Passas is the fourth candidate to put their hand up for Summer Hill in what looks likely to be a hard fought seat. Former Marrickville Mayor Jo Haylen is the Labor candidate. Marrickville Councillor Max Phillips is the Greens candidate and Susan Price will represent the Socialist Alliance.

News in brief New research shows up to 130,000 women in NSW alone may be putting themselves at a higher risk of cervical cancer, admitting they are likely to delay their next Pap test beyond the recommended two years.

test skipped The research commissioned by the Cancer Institute NSW was conducted amid concerns by health experts that women may put off screening after

the Federal Government announced changes to the National Cervical Screening Program, which will not be implemented before 2016.

The proposed changes include a switch from the traditional Pap test to a HPV DNA test, which will detect the presence of the HPV virus. Also proposed is raising the start age of the program to 25 and increasing the interval between screening to five years.

Sarah McGill, Director of Cancer Screening and Prevention at the Cancer Institute NSW says that while the proposed changes are undoubtedly positive, it is vital that women don’t become complacent in the time until these changes are introduced, which is not expected to be before 2016.

NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe is advising consumers to take extra care when using retractable cable chargers through a USB connection for their electronic devices including ipods, ipads and iphones.

Mr Stowe said consumers should read any product information and be aware of the appropriate use of this type of charger.

He said when using a retractable cable charger, make sure the cable is fully extended; always maintain direct supervision of the charger and do not leave it connected to a power source unattended; and ensure that the retractable charger is compatible with any additional device you are using.

ember for Grayndler Anthony Albanese has added the role of Shadow Minister for Cities to his responsibilities and, in a speech to the National Press Club in Canberra, outlined a vision for urban policy in Australia.

This vision includes investment in active transport solutions connecting public transport, education and employment hubs; promoting housing along public transport corridors and jobs in research precincts around universities and hospitals as well as in outer suburbs; and supporting renewable energy, sustainability and connectivity in all new developments.

“We are witnessing the rise of a new phenomenon – Drive In Drive Out suburbs where people cannot afford to live near their workplace,” Mr Albanese said.

“We hear a lot about the policy implications of Fly In Fly Out communities, but far less about the much greater number who live in Drive In Drive Out suburbs.

This trend is changing lives in ways that cause real concern.”

He said he was particularly attracted to the concept of the ‘30 minute city’.

“This is the simple concept that most

of people’s day to day work, educational, shopping or recreational activities should be located within 30 minutes walking, cycling or public commuting from their homes,” he said.

Mr Albanese went on to criticise the Abbott Government’s prejudice against public transport.

“Whilst it’s absurd that Joe Hockey thinks poor people don’t drive cars, it’s even more absurd that Tony Abbott thinks nobody wants to take public transport,” he said.

“There is no issue too big for Mr Abbott to show just how small his world view is.”

He also described as “backward looking” the current Government’s position that urban policy is a matter for the states; dismantling the Major Cities Unit on its first day, and abandoning the Urban Policy Forum.

“When it comes to our cities, legislators need imagination. The imagination to envisage cities which are dynamic, productive, sustainable, connected and vibrant. Cities which are centres of opportunity,” he said.

Mr Albanese said Australian cities will grow in coming decades with the national population projected to double by 2050 including 8 million in Sydney.

“Whether that happens in a planned way or by accident is up to us,” he concluded.

Drilling begins in Sydney Park Residents protest over lack of information, motorway location and smoke stacks

xploratory drilling for the WestConnex began this week in Sydney Park near the corner of Barwon Park Road and Campbell

Street.

Local residents gathered on Thursday for a peaceful protest in front of the drilling site holding signs and placards saying ‘Please don’t destroy our homes’ and ‘Our children don’t like smoke’. Organiser Emma Pierce said they only found out on Tuesday that drilling was about to start.

“As a community we’re really concerned about the lack of information that’s available,” Ms Pierce said.

“It’s causing significant stress for families and for people in the community generally.”

Ms Pierce said 18 exploratory drilling sites have been identified in St Peters, Sydenham and Tempe; some in parks like Sydney Park, Sydenham Green and Kendrick Park in Tempe but others in schools and residential areas.

She said, although the route of the tunnel is yet to be finalised, it seems clear it will run under residential areas.

“If that happens there will have to be smoke stacks somewhere. There will have

She believes the road is unnecessary and will only bring more traffic and more cars.

“What we need is better public transport which will reduce the amount of traffic rather than increasing it,” Ms Pierce said.

“This is actually a big waste of money.

They’re proposing at least $13.5bn going into this project, which could be much better spent on a range of services to the community.”

Marrickville Greens Councillor Max Phillips joined the protesters and agreed with much of what Ms Pierce said.

“It’s really concerning that the State Government is being so secretive about the route,” Cr Phillips said.

“Building more motorways is a 1950s concept. We should be investing in public transport and smarter solutions. We don’t need another motorway full of cars.”

A WestConnex Delivery Authority spokesperson said the start of geotechni-

cal drilling around Stage 2 was marked with a visit to a drilling site by the Federal Treasurer, Premier and NSW Roads Minister in September.

“Local residents and businesses are being notified in writing ahead of work starting in their local area,” the spokesperson said.

“The work at around 100 locations along the corridor is concentrating on locations where information on the ground conditions isn’t already available.”

Man arrested over false kidnapping report in Stanmore

Police hunt down man over five robberies in 2011

A man has been charged after police received an alleged false report of a carjacking and kidnapping in Sydney’s inner west last month.

On Tuesday, September 16, police were told a woman had been kidnapped during a carjacking at Stanmore earlier that day.

The woman and her partner reported the incident to police.

Detectives from Marrickville Local Area Command commenced an investigation and located the vehicle, a Toyota Camry, the following week in Merchant Street at Stanmore. During subsequent inquiries, police determined the report to be false.

About 2.30pm on Wednesday, police attended a tavern in Marrickville where they arrested the man. The 33-year-old allegedly resisted and struggled with officers during the arrest. He was taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged numerous offences. Investigations are continuing and the woman is expected to receive a future court attendance notice.

A man has been charged with multiple armed robbery offences following a lengthy investigation by the Metropolitan Robbery Unit.

Strike Force Beachmont was formed in 2011 to investigate five robberies that occurred across Banksia, Wolli Creek, Peakhurst, Mortdale and Kyle Bay, four of which were allegedly committed at knifepoint.

On Tuesday, September 30, police arrested a 46-year-old man at an Ashfield address and executed a search warrant at a home in Tempe, where they seized a number of items.

The man was taken to Maroubra Police Station, where he was charged with ‘robbery’ and four counts of ‘robbery armed with an offensive weapon’.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Kogarah Local Court on Tuesday, October 21.

Lucky escape for residents in unit fire at Petersham About 2.30am this Monday, September 29, a Petersham couple were woken by the smell of smoke. A 50-year-old man noticed that the unit behind their house was alight.

The man attempted to extinguish the fire but was unsuccessful. NSW Fire and Rescue arrived a short time later and extinguished the fire. Police located all the residents and fortunately no one was injured or required medical treatment.

Man charged for hitting his own car with a hammer A 28-year-old man has been issued with an infringement notice for offensive behaviour following an incident in Dulwich Hill last Sunday, September 28.

About 12.45pm the man became aggressive when his vehicle wouldn’t start and tore the rear vision mirror from the vehicle before smashing the windscreen. The man also used a hammer to hit the vehicle several times.

A member of the public stopped and calmed the man down before calling police.

Labor chooses young local for by-election

he Labor Party has endorsed 28-year-old Daniel Barbar from Dulwich Hill as its candidate for the by-election in the West Ward of Marrickville Council, which will be held on Saturday, November 15.

The by-election was triggered following the untimely death of Labor Councillor Emanuel Tsardoulias in August.

Mr Barbar said the community had lost a passionate advocate and champion in Cr Tsardoulias, and he had lost a dear and close friend.

“I am determined to continue Emanuel’s work. He was so passionate about the community especially Dulwich Hill and West Ward,” Mr Barbar said.

“There were so many projects he managed to achieve and get under way; movies at Johnston Park, major park upgrades, road safety upgrades around Dulwich Hill Public School, the new SES building, discussions for a new public library in Dulwich Hill. If elected, I want to finish the good work Emanuel started.”

Daniel Barbar was born and raised in Marrickville to Greek and Lebanese parents. He went to St Brigid’s Primary School in Marrickville and Christian Brothers Lewisham where he was vice

captain in his final year. He is proud to be the first person in his family to go to university where he completed a Bachelor of Commerce specialising in accounting and finance.

He worked his way through university at Officeworks in Petersham and Subway on Marrickville Road before getting a job with the National Australia Bank after graduation.

“I was responsible for looking after small to medium sized businesses and developed many skills there in the financial field,” he said.

“After a few years at the bank I began working for local member Anthony Albanese, first as a community advocate and then an advisor for him. It was very valuable experience to see how government works and how governments can achieve really good results for communities.”

He says housing affordability is a huge issue for the local area.

“All the local kids I grew up with now face this problem of, ‘I love this area, my family is here but how can I afford to live here?’” Mr Barbar said.

10 Comedy shows true nature of mental illness

even budding comedians are within sight of their goal as they prepare to take to the stage at Sydney Town Hall later this month and perform a self-written routine in front of a 1,200 strong audience.

Wise Employment is backing the program, which sees seven people all with a mental illness put through a 12-week training program to find their inner comedian.

Marrickville’s Melissa De Silva is really looking forward to getting up on stage and trying out her material.

“I’ve wanted to do stand-up comedy for a really long time but I’ve never been brave enough to do it,” Ms De Silva said.

“To have this opportunity to be guided through it is something that was really important to me. It’s taken a preexisting goal and made it happen.”

The course is taught by Canadian comedian Dave Granirer who beams into the Marrickville Wise office via Skype and Melbourne radio presenter Steve Bedwell, both of whom have had their own battles with mental illness.

They will also appear on the Wise Stand Up for Mental Health comedy bill.

“Dave’s also a counsellor. He has a nice

manner of talking to you,” Ms De Silva said.

“He has a way of saying that joke sucks and you should never say it again. He can say that without putting you off-side.”

Zac Anderson is another participant and was full of praise for the program.

“We’re up to the point now where pretty much all of us can stand up and do five minutes of jokes,” he said.

He said they started with facts and learnt how to add a twist to make it funny.

“For example, I could say, ‘I’ve been on lithium for two years. It’s really uncomfortable,” Mr Anderson said.

Both Melissa and Zac are keen to challenge stereotypes of mental illness as part of the process of going on stage. Melissa has been in a good job for 14 years while Zac is in his final year of study at the Conservatorium.

“Hopefully people who have mental illness in the crowd will look at us and say ‘they’re not so special, I could probably do something. I could probably manage to go to work four days a week or I could probably manage to make a speech at my best friend’s wedding,’” Ms De Silva said.

Melissa and Zac will be performing in Wise Stand Up for Mental Health on Thursday, October 30 at 7pm at Sydney Town Hall. Tickets are $20 and available from www.ticketmaster.com.au.

New road to cemetery sees Irish pub resurrected and last another 180 years

hile Irish patriot Daniel O’Connell is most remembered for his fight for Catholic emancipation, Catholics’ rights to sit in the Westminster Parliament, and repeal of the Parliamentary Act that combined Great Britain with Ireland, drinkers at a pub in Dublin raise their pints to him today for a far more bizarre reason.

Three times an MP, and for two years Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1841-42, the philosophies of Daniel O’Connell have also been quoted as inspiring Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and even English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray.

But it is drinkers at Kavanagh’s Pub on Prospect Square in Dublin who today salute O’Connell for more down-to-earth reasons: ensuring that their watering-hole stands 180 years after it’s almost certain demise. Kavanagh’s is certainly worthy of a visit if ever you are heading to the Irish capital, both for that history and the fact it’s been run by six generations of the one

A John O’Neill opened the pub on the then outskirts of Dublin in 1833, hopeful that he could cash-in on the year old

Glasnevin Cemetery next door by hosting wakes for the bereaved, and even stepping in as an impromptu undertaker.

But although the gates to the cemetery

were so close to his pub, the people never came. Enter O’Neill’s friend O’Connell, who offered to help the publican attract customers from the thousands of Dubliners who would ultimately have loved-ones buried in the Glasnevin Cemetery.

And O’Connell did so in a most bizarre way: he lobbied the government to have a new road built from Dublin to the cemetery, passing right by the pub.

So appreciative was the grateful publican that when that road was finally opened, he declared that the only beer served would be O’Connell’s Ale… which just happened to be brewed by the son of Daniel O’Connell.

O’Neill prospered, but after just two years handed over the business to his son-in-law John Kavanagh when the latter married O’Neill’s daughter Suzanne.

The pub then took the younger man’s name and has been John Kavanagh’s ever since. Current publican, Eugene Kavanagh is the sixth generation of the lineage.

If you’re visiting Dublin and taking a few at Kavanagh’s, drop into the cemetery as well to see the graves of the likes of onetime Ireland President Eamon de Valera, poet Brendan Behan, Home Rule advocate Charles Stewart Parnell and Luke Kelly of the iconic folk group, The Dubliners.

I couldn’t care less about horse racing; the races themselves are repetitive, I’m not a punter and the crowds really frustrate me.

But there is something really enjoyable about being in a place where everyone is dressed in their very best.

The races give us the rare opportunity to dress with class, dress with style and dress to impress – three things that when put together are only acceptable for wear on two types of occasions; at weddings and the races.

Men can throw on their suits and ties, slip into their expensive leather dress shoes and choose a shirt that will have the ladies nodding in approval, but the real excitement is for the women.

We have a bounty of dresses to choose from, or skirt and shirt ensembles, and then come the fascinators, hats and other head-wear items, the beautiful shoes, the stand out clutches and of course, the accessories.

Getting your outfit spot-on takes some serious time and planning, given that there are so many different aspects of the outfit that need to be thought about, but just because it looks right doesn’t mean that it is suitable for the day.

If you have never been to a race day, a word of advice; choose your shoes, the colour of your clothes and the cut of your dress carefully.

I see people get so caught up in what is the best exercise or routine to do. Magazines are full of articles saying which fancy exercises to do in what order, and to do four sets or exactly 15 reps.

No wonder people get confused... it’s easy to think, ‘what happens if I do 16 reps, do my arms fall off?’

The magazines show some barbie-doll or he-man doing complicated exercises like sitting balanced with your legs in the air, swinging a medicine ball from side to side. Then they throw in words like core or functional.

Maybe I don’t get out enough, but I can’t remember the last time I was sitting on the ground then needed to lift my legs up and swing a weight side to side, so that’s not really a functional movement.

I’ll let you in on a secret... if you want to get a bit fitter, just walk around every day; go out and pick a specific route e.g. the bridge to bridge down at the Nepean River.

Time how long it takes you to walk it the first time. Rest a day or two, now on the second time try to get a bit quicker; the third time a bit quicker again.

Likewise for strength, if you want to get stronger, get a heavy weight and lift it as many times as you can until you can’t lift another one safely.

It’s not rocket science but it is science. As your walking or running times get quicker you will get fitter. After you rest and you can lift a bit more weight you are getting stronger.

It’s called progressive overload. Each time you finish feeling a little bit tired your body recovers to where you started but then, very importantly, a little bit more!

For example, have you ever worked with a shovel and rubbed the skin away on your hands? After you rest it the skin repairs thicker than it was, forming a callous, so next time it can handle even more work.

Your body is made to move and improve, so go do something you like, make it fun and watch your body adapt and improve.

Don’t sit there reading those magazines, spending more time trying to figure out what they mean, compared to how long you actually plan to exercise for!

Barking is a normal (and important) part of a dog’s communication repertoire, and many dog owners see barking to be a positive thing when alerting the houseowner to a potential threat. Excessive barking or barking with no apparent function can impinge on neighbourly relations and puts pressure on the human-pet bond.

The key to reducing bothersome barking is understanding why your pet is vocalising. Attention seeking, boredom, anxiety and fear are the most common causes of inappropriate barking, but an often-forgotten cause is inadvertent positive reinforcement. By interacting with your barking dog and patting them with a view to ‘calm them down’, pet owners unknowingly are encouraging this behaviour.

Try and also identify the situations when your dog barks, for example, if they react to joggers passing by your front window, draw the blinds.

Separation anxiety If your dog barks non-stop when you leave the house for work in the morning, they could be suffering from separation anxiety. To extinguish this behaviour, make your departure a positive thing for your pet. Give a large meaty bone every time you leave, and leave promptly without a showering of affection.

Boredom Give your prolific barker some mental stimulation by leaving treat balls in the house that dispenses the daily ration of food slowly as your pet has to work for it.

Anxiety If your veterinarian diagnoses your pet with anxiety or fearrelated over-barking, consider the therapeutic use of ‘Dog Appeasing Pheromone’ which has a calming effect on dogs.

It is available in a collar, which is stocked by most veterinary clinics.

Over-excited If your pet gets restless then try to plan for additional time at the local park to burn off that excess energy.

Burlinson recalls this passion for Sinatra’s music starting at a very young age.

“My mother tells me that when I was a toddler I would point at this album that she had called ‘The Swingin’ Affair!’ and it was one of Sinatra’s albums from the late 1950s and I would point to the photo on the album cover and say ‘play the man in the hat, let’s play the man in the hat’,” he said.

“There was something about the music, something about the man’s voice that grabbed me when I was very young.

“When I was older I rediscovered that album and then became an avid Sinatra fan.”

While Burlinson admits he has explored other music in the style he calls ‘vocal swing’, Sinatra’s interpretation of songs, his musicality, personality and emotional connection with the material was what kept Burlinson going back to the musical great.

“You often got an impression that Sinatra had experienced, or sometimes even was experiencing, what he was singing about so for me it really gets me involved as it has with millions of other people over the years,” he said.

Though his current focus is on the music side of things Burlinson is a NIDA graduate who first got his start in the industry as an actor; working across TV, film and theatre.

He has starred in films such as 1983’s ‘Phar Lap: Heart of a Nation’ and 2011’s ‘The Cup’.

More recently Burlinson appeared as a

judge on the hit TV show ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ from 2007 to 2009. But his most recognisable role was also one of his first, as the lead in the 1982 film ‘The Man from Snowy River’.

“Snowy will always be very close to my heart because it was a tremendous career break for me as a young actor,” he said.

“I wanted to get into an Australian film and boy I got into one that, although we didn’t know it at the time, became hugely successful and very much loved to this day by people not only in Australia but in different countries around the world.”

“That has to be at the top of my list for memorable pieces of work.”

Looking towards the future Burlinson says he would love to get back to where his career started.

“I’d love to do some more acting work of course, that was my first love I guess and that’s the good thing about being an actor; you can continue to do it until you’re old if you get the parts,” he laughed.

But at the end of the day what Burlinson is most thankful for is the opportunity to have a long term career in an industry he is clearly passionate about, something that isn’t easy in an industry where the work can be few and far between.

“I think myself very fortunate to have been able to continue to work in show business for such a long time because it’s kind of rare in this country.”

No covers, they are the real deal! bsolutely 80s sound like an 80s cover band but are actually a super group featuring the singers of five different 80s bands including Brian Mannix (Uncanny X-Men), Dale Ryder (Boom Crash Opera), Scott Carne (Kids in the Kitchen), Paul Gray (Wa Wa Nee) and David Sterry (Real Life).

At the time, Kids in the Kitchen were considered Australia’s answer to Spandau Ballet with a combination of synth pop and pretty boy looks. They recorded four consecutive Top 20 hits between 1983 and 1985 with ‘Change In Mood’, ‘Bitter Desire’, ‘Something That You Said’ and ‘Current Stand’. Their second album wasn’t as successful as the first and they called it a day in 1987. Carne is now the driving force behind Absolutely 80s.

Real Life had two big hits, ‘Send Me An Angel’ and ‘Catch Me I’m Falling’, which were top 10 hits in Australia in 1983 as well as being successful in the US and a number of European countries. Six years later, a remixed version of ‘Send Me An Angel’ was used in the soundtrack of the film ‘The Wizard’ and re-entered the US Top 50 as a result.

The Uncanny X-Men were formed in 1981 and were very much a pop band. Led by the charismatic Mannix, they hit their peak between 1984 and 1986 with songs like ‘Everybody Wants To Work’, ‘The Party’, ‘50 Years’ and ‘I Am’. They split up in 1987 but have reformed occasionally.

Boom Crash Opera burst on to the scene in 1986 with the single ‘Great Wall’, which reached number five on the ARIA Charts.

Follow up songs like ‘Hands Up In The Air’

ABSOLUTE 80’S CANTERBURY HURLSTONE PARK RSL CLUB SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25 and ‘Onion Skin’ also made the top 20 and they were still recording top 50 hits as late as 1995.

Wa Wa Nee took their inspiration more from American funk reaching number two in the Australian charts in 1986 with ‘Stimulation’. This was followed by two more top ten hits, ‘I Could Make You Love

me’ and ‘Sugar Free’ before ‘One and One (Ain’t I Good Enough)’ took them into the American charts where they’re considered a one-hit wonder.

Absolutely 80s will bring the hits of all five bands to the Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club at 8.30pm on Saturday, October 25. Tickets are $30.

Snarski said he never intended it to be a solo album and was originally meant to be a collaboration with Dan Luscombe as a follow up to their 2004 album ‘There Is Nothing Here That Belongs To You’.

“About three quarters of the way through, Dan said, ‘it should be your solo record’. I wasn’t sure how to take that,” Snarski said.

“It took me a while to get used to the idea. But it has increased my appetite for doing this sort of thing. I guess I took more ownership of the songs and probably finished it a lot quicker than I would if I was asking Dan what he thought about everything.”

‘Wounded Bird’ is a change of pace from his work with the Blackeyed Susans, slower with sparser arrangements while

the songwriting explores love rejected or betrayed.

“It’s had a wonderful reception so far and been nominated as album of the week on Radio National and 3RRR,” Snarski said.

“The opening track, ‘Tender Like A Bruise’ has received a lot of airplay. There are no videos yet. We’re talking about doing one. Maybe ‘Lay of the Land’. It’s a song about a reunion, a couple getting back together.”

Snarski said the show at the Camelot Lounge will also be a simple arrangement featuring himself and guitarist JP Shilo.

“I’m looking forward to playing in Marrickville. Many years ago I used to do a mail run in Marrickville so it will be interesting to see how it’s changed,” he said.

“I’ve heard it’s becoming more of a music hub recently. Clare Moore, who played on the album suggested I play at Camelot.”

Snarski’s musical career stretches back over 30 years to the days of Chad’s Tree in Perth with his brother Mark. From there he joined the Blackeyed Susans in 1989 with Dave McComb, Alsy McDonald and Phil Kakulas of The Triffids.

hen winemaker Peter Logan married Hannah Murphie back in October 2003 he had a special surprise for her: he’d created a Rosé for the day he labelled Hannah, and not only had it served at their wedding reception, but gave a bottle to every guest...

Today it rates as one of the most popular labels from Peter and Hannah’s Logan Winery at Orange (and where Hannah, incidentally, is now General Manager).

A blend of 52 per cent Pinot Meunier, 21 per cent Shiraz, 15 per cent Cabernet France and 12 per cent Pinot Gris, the latest release 2014 Hannah is a lovely, easy-drinking drop; one its namesake says she loves for its, “freshness, red fruit and spice flavours, appetite-whetting brininess, and a crunchy finish that makes you want just a little more.”

Pinot Gris was virtually unknown in the Clare when Tim planted his first vines, and today he can be proud of what he’s achieved in the development of this wonderfully food-friendly drop. The 2014 has dominant pear, lychee and peach flavours, and sells at $20.

25th anniversary of Amazing Race Good news for fans of E! show ‘Fashion Police’ with the show to return to screens despite the death of host Joan Rivers. The comedy legend tragically died last month after surgery gone wrong with many predicting the hit show would end with Rivers no longer there.

However, Melissa Rivers, the show’s producer and Rivers’ daughter confirmed ‘Fashion Police’ would return.

Still on ‘Fashion Police’ and there were rumours circulating last week that a good friend of Joan Rivers and a super popular comedian in her own right, Kathy Griffin, may be the woman to replace her. I personally think this would be a fantastic choice for the return of the show!

She’s edgy, funny and Rivers would certainly approve of her continuing her hilarious legacy.

A new primetime variety show will launch next year with producers searching for “Australia’s most entertaining act”. Sounds a bit like ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ in disguise but I’m told its brand new concept. For information on how to enter visit fmashows.com.

SBS is famous for its late night movies featuring sex, horror and everything in between. Now the network has announced its SBS On Demand service will expand to offer over 400 movies free to viewers. Films will be available for a year with titles added monthly.

Louis Theroux, my favourite journalist/ documentary maker, is back on Foxtel next week with an all new series titled ‘LA Stories’.

The three-part special will begin on Monday, October 13 at 9.30pm on BBC Knowledge and continue on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Lastly, a brand new season of the American version of ‘The Amazing Race’ begins on Channel Seven tonight at 11pm. The new series comes off the back of a great end to the Australian version which wrapped up last week. The US version is now in its 25th season.

Reform After consulting with the motor industry, the NSW Govt will introduce major changes to benefit consumers

ougher penalties for odometer tampering will be introduced under sweeping new reforms for the motor dealers and repairers industry announced by the NSW Government this week.

“Odometer readings are one of the major factors consumers look at when buying a used car,” said NSW Fair Trading Minister, Matthew Mason-Cox. “As part of the changes, the maximum penalty for any dealer or repairer altering a car odometer will be doubled to $22,000.

“A new, public Name and Shame register will also be established to allow consumers to check if a dealer or repairer has a current licence and whether they have had disciplinary action or offences recorded against them.

“Consumers will be able to make more informed decisions about who to do business with and the threat of public shaming will give traders stronger incentives to comply with the law.”

Under the new laws, motor dealers will also be required to disclose information about a vehicle being offered for sale.

This includes information on whether the car has suffered hail or flood damage, if there has been odometer interference and if major modifications have been made to the car that might affect future registration or insurance.

NSW Fair Trading inspectors will have new powers to issue orders to licensed

dealers and repairers to fix faults without a consumer having to take legal action.

The changes form part of a package of reforms, due to start on December 1.

his weekend’s NRL Grand Final will pit the Redfern-based Rabbitohs against the Belmore-based Bulldogs.

The game promises to be a classic with South Sydney – who have won more premierships (20) than any other club but who haven’t made a grand final since 1971 – bringing heritage and hunger to the contest while Canterbury – who have won the majority of their eight title shots since 1980 – bringing their never-say-die attitude to the game.

Souths have had a good season finishing third on the ladder, just one win behind minor premiers the Sydney Roosters.

They then went on to beat the Manly Sea Eagles in the first week of the finals and the Roosters last weekend in a spectacular and dominant display.

Canterbury, on the other hand, have had a roller coaster season.

They were outright leaders for many weeks before a slump saw them slide down the table and almost miss the semifinals, scraping through in seventh position.
