Ms Tebbutt said the allocated funds came from the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program. The funds assist community groups and local councils in building infrastructure. The program, now in its fourth year, was a former Labor government initiative. Ms Tebbutt said although the funding this year was lower than previous years, she was happy for the organisations. “I’m disappointed that the overall funding has been reduced even further in the Coalition’s second budget, [but] local organisations will still benefit from the funding,” she said.

total of 13 local community groups will share in $200,000 of State Government funding. The funding was announced on Tuesday by Member for Marrickville Carmel Tebbutt who said the money will be channelled into much needed areas of their businesses. “[One] of those businesses is Pathways Early Childhood Intervention who will receive $20,000 for renovations to the playground/landscape areas for children with disabilities,” she said.

Other businesses that will benefit are Marrickville PCYC who’ll receive of $8,965 for bathroom amenities. Club Manager Justin Mining said the organisation welcomes the additional funding. “With our member numbers growing, the renovation of the bathrooms is certainly needed; the funds will contribute nicely,” he said. The Asylum Seekers Centre at Newtown will receive $20,000, Stanmore Public School P & C will get $6,000 for a kitchen garden project for the students, and $8,000 will go to Scouts Australia to for general repairs to the hall at Petersham as well as the hall’s roof.

hildren who aren’t vaccinated could be expelled from child care facilities under new laws passed by the State Government this week. Health Minister Jillian Skinner made the changes to the Public Health Act 2010 that will force parents or guardians to have their child vaccinated before they enrol them into care. Under the new laws, parents and guardians must provide evidence their child has been fully vaccinated for age, or is on a recognised catch-up schedule, or has an exemption approved by a GP. Valid exemptions will be made to those on religious beliefs. Directors of child care facilities are also required to obtain vaccination evidence or an exemption prior to enrolment. Failure to comply is subject to a fi ne. “Forget the scaremongering – there is nothing to fear from vaccination. The NSW Government is determined to protect our children,” Ms Skinner said. reens Councillor David Leary has lashed out at fellow councillors, condemning them for not allowing residents a vote on the amalgamation of councils and called the decision not to have a referendum an “attack on democracy”. Cr Leary said that at last Tuesday’s meeting the Council unanimously voted down the proposal put forward by the Greens for a referendum on any amalgamation proposals. “I was gob-smacked that our Mayor, the Labor Party and the Liberals all thought residents should not have the right to vote on the future of Local Government in Marrickville,” Cr Cleary said. However Labor Councillor Emanuel Tsardoulias was scathing in his response. “I think he’s [Cr Leary] playing games. He is hijacking the matter any way he can without coming up with a solution. Nothing could be further from the truth. The council has spent $120,000 as part of the consultation with ratepayers to get their views on the amalgamation.”

On the app-take Six transport apps for NSW have proved very popular. More than 1.5 million downloads have been recorded since the apps were made available last month, including more than 22 million requests for real time data.

He said that a number of initiatives were in place for residents of the Marrickville local government area to be informed. “We’ve hired a telephone consultancy to call some 600-700 residents to get feedback on the amalgamations, we have letters going to residents and we have an online survey encouraging residents to take part,” he said. “Cr Leary is jumping the gun and likes to grandstand.” Liberal Councillor Mark Gardiner agreed. “Th is is another case of misinformation yet again from the party of protest,” he said. He said Council did everything in their capacity to let ratepayers know that their views are wanted on this issue. “We would consult with ratepayers with any of the decisions that come out of the report released from the Independent Local Government Review Panel.” On the question of having the Greens proposal of a referendum put to the ratepayers Cr Gardiner said it was not clear on how the referendum would be conducted, and the costs to the ratepayers.

Safer for kids New legislation has passed parliament to make workplaces and organisations safer for children in NSW. A new Office of the Children’s Guardian has also been established to regulate children’s care.

arrickville residents who rely on teaching services provided by TAFE will be affected by funding cuts to the education budget to the tune of $1.8 billion according to Greens Councillor Melissa Brooks. Cr Brooks put a motion forward to Council to oppose the funding cuts, saying it was a concern for community groups including disadvantaged groups. “TAFE has always been affordable and an accessible entry point to further education and these cuts are putting TAFE out of reach for many people,” she said. Around 800 staffi ng positions have been cut including many teaching jobs. Cr Brooks put to the Council her concerns including the impact the cutbacks would have on people with disabilities and those who take part in English as their Second Language classes (ESL). She said the loss of teaching services to local artists would erode the local talent. “Arts and design courses at TAFE are an incubator for so much of the artistic activity in Marrickville,” she said. There is also concern government assets such as TAFE colleges and local schools may be in danger of being sold off. However a spokesperson for the Department of Education and Communities said the figures Marrickville Council mentioned were not correct. “I’m not sure where they’re getting their figures of $1.8 billion for the TAFE budget cuts from but they’re not accurate. The savings are $1.7 billion across the entire education budget,” he said. But the former Secretary of the TAFE Teachers Association and current spokesperson for the TAFE Community Alliance, Linda Simon said the cuts to

TAFE staff have already begun and that they would stifle community progress. “$1.7 billion cuts across the education sector is correct however a significant amount of that money will impact TAFE. The effects are already being felt. We’ve already lost nine language teachers for the English as Second Language (ESL) classes,” she said. An exact funding cut figure for TAFE is not known.

Marrickville Police are currently investigating a break, enter and stealing incident. The incident took place at a restaurant on Addison Road, Marrickville near the intersection of Enmore Road. Sometime between 10.30pm on Wednesday (May 22) night and 10am on Thursday morning the offender has gained access. CCTV footage depicts a male of medium build, approximately 175cm in height, wearing a white coloured hooded jumper, white base ball cap, light coloured pants and sneakers inside the premises. Marrickville Police are appealing for anyone who may have information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

ith property prices in Sydney escalating, home prices in Lewisham and Petersham have risen sharply in the last

two years. Lewisham was once thought to be an undervalued suburb of the Inner West but it now has a median house sale price over $1 million. The suburb statistics report released by True Property shows the median house sales price for Lewisham is $1,030,000 compared to a house in the Marrickville LGA of $856,500. The report also shows the median sale price for Lewisham in 2011 was $711,250 compared with $775,000 in 2012. Chairman of Inner West Division of REI of NSW and Principal of True Property, Braden Walters, said property prices in the Lewisham and Petersham area were being pushed up because of demand from people drifting out from the inner city. “These prices are being pushed up for a couple of reasons. Firstly the pressure of inner city living is strong. People are moving back from the city to the Inner

West because it’s not as expensive as the inner city ring, he said. “Secondly infrastructure in the Inner West is also pushing prices up. For example the light rail extension is running from Lilyfield through Dulwich Hill. “Lewisham will certainly benefit from that and it’s being reflected in the house prices. According to the Transport NSW website Lewisham West is one of the areas that will have the light rail built through it. LJ Hooker Principal Ron Alexander said property prices in Lewisham and Petersham were historically low in comparison to their neighbouring suburbs. “Lewisham and Petersham have always been the poor cousins of the other suburbs in the Inner West. But that is changing, he said. “The Boulevard in Lewisham has properties that will fetch just over $1 million. Seven to eight years ago the property prices would be $700,000 to 800,000. Today they’ll easily get over a $1 million. I’m marketing a four bedroom property in Denning Street, Petersham which is fielding offers of $1.1 million.

“Financially irresponsible” Action group says Council shouldn’t waste money on Arlington Oval turf

BASIL NAIMET

ction group Save Arlington Reserve has garnered further support in its quest to stop Marrickville Council from spending over $1 million on artificial turf to be laid on Arlington Oval, Dulwich Hill. On Monday the group met with Councillors Mark Gardiner and Melissa Brooks to hand them submissions from over 685 ratepayers and residents from the Marrickville local government area who oppose the project. Councillor Morris Hanna who supports the action group had excused himself from attending at the last minute. The group said the $1 million costs for the project were preliminary. The true value is expected to be much higher. Local resident Sandra Sullivan said the project was expensive and the costs would be worn by the ratepayers. “It’s too expensive and fi nancially irresponsible… Council will not be able to generate a sufficiently high income to cover the costs of laying and maintaining artificial turf. Residents and ratepayers will incur the costs for many years to come,” she said. Another group member Sharon Laura said the money the Council had projected was well over $1 million. “The draft operating budget shows that Council is already borrowing money and the projected cost of these borrowings will be $1,327,000 in 2013/14,” she said. “The money the Council is putting into

nner West residents will have access to light rail services in early 2014 according to Transport for NSW who are extending the light rail services that currently operate bewteen Central and Lilyfield. A Transport for NSW spokesman said the construction of the light rail was on target for scheduled completion. “The Light Rail Extension is on track for services to begin in early 2014. Since major construction began in November 2012, there has been significant progress,” he said. Details of the scope of the project include a 5.6 kilometre extension of the light rail from Lilyfield to Dulwich Hill, and nine new light rail stops to be created at Hawthorne, Lewisham West, Waratah Mills, and Dulwich Grove. The spokesman said construction of the extension will start to take shape shortly. “Lift shafts will soon be installed at the Dulwich Grove, Marion, Taverners Hill and Leichhardt North shops,” he said. The stations will provide state of the art facilities for passengers including real-time passenger information to be placed at new and existing stops. New paths with facilities for changing between transport modes will also be created. In addition to improving transport links, the light rail will provide a connection between major shopping and entertainment districts including Sydney Fish Markets, Star City, Paddy’s Markets, Capitol theatre and Leichhardt Marketplace.

Farewell to a genuine politician and the end of an era

his week Martin Ferguson announced he’s quitting the political business after two decades. After the hurley-burley of Question Time, the strawberry blond haired, no-nonsense, oft-abrupt backbencher got to his feet and dropped a bombshell that came as a shock to many. He’d only been furnishing the backbench since March, when the Kevin Rudd supporter relinquished his Resources ministry after another failed leadership coup. On Wednesday he joked that his retirement speech was “his fi rst and last from the backbench”. A Labor man through and through, he served 17 years in the parliament. He was a minister under Hawke, Keating, Rudd and Gillard. He was never too far from Labor, and spent six years as ACTU president before joining politics. Mr Ferguson is seen as an economic rationalist, a political pragmatist and a respected minister. His departure from politics perhaps signals the end of an era for Labor. But Martin Ferguson’s departure should cause us to reflect on the often thankless job of our politicians. Long hours away from home and the party is always prioritised fi rst. Public life is tough and whatever the fi nancial reward there’s every chance the most talented could earn at least double if they went corporate. Over the past few months we’ve lamented the disintegration of

parliamentary debate. Th is week for just a moment, some wraith was restored. Tony Abbott came close to tears as he gave genuine thanks to a political foe. Julia Gillard put her differences aside and many broke with protocol in the chamber to line up and just give him a hug or shake his hand.

In those regions it is part of the Martial Arts/Defensive Tactics syllabus for many civilian, police, and military units. Tactical Krav Maga is a system which can be learnt in a reasonably short period of time and is low maintenance. TKM combines unarmed and armed defensive tactical solutions for any hostile environment.

Cleaning blitz: Trains get best clean they’ve had in a decade

Speed date with an architect: Get ideas to green your home

S

ydneysiders looking to make their homes more environmentally friendly have the chance to meet some of Australia’s ‘hottest’ green architects and designers at a free speed-dating session this weekend. Run by the Alternative Technology Association and funded by the City of Sydney, the event connects residents considering home renovations with leading experts on everything from solar power and rainwater tanks to using recycled materials. Participants are offered 13-minute

‘dates’ with at least two designers of their choice, where they can ask questions about sustainable design, get feedback on prospective plans or seek inspiration for a future project – with no obligation to see the designer again. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the event was a great opportunity for environmentally conscious Sydneysiders to check their ideas with designers. “Whether you’ve just started a renovation or need inspiration for a future project, this is a chance to run your plans past some of Sydney’s leading professionals.”

$3.5 million, 27,000-hour cleaning blitz on the interior of Sydney’s trains is radically improving the standards of cleanliness with some seats and floors receiving their most intensive scrub in more than a decade. Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian said the blitz comes after the NSW Government established a permanent cleaning unit outside of RailCorp with new commercial benchmarks and new management to ensure trains will be properly cleaned on an ongoing basis. Ms Berejiklian said the $3.5 million cleaning blitz will: • See more than 1,300 carriages extensively deep cleaned by June 30; • Properly clean fabric seats in Millenium, Oscar and Tangara carriages using dry encapsulation machines – basically dry steam cleaning – after it was found cleaning techniques used in the past to clean these seats were not up to scratch; • Scrub carriage floors and under seats using pressurised steam cleaning machines and scrubbing machines – as opposed to mops which have been used since high pressure hosing ceased around a decade ago; • Trial a range of technologies for tough jobs like cleaning off chewing gum and graffiti including freezing, spraying and steaming techniques. “Cleanliness is really important to our train customers and the NSW Government is committing to using modern equipment, professional

practices and commercial standards when it comes to cleaning our carriages,” Ms Berejiklian said. “Once we get the fleet up to scratch with this blitz, I can assure customers that the new dedicated cleaning unit will not be allowed to let our new high standards slip. “Th is is not just about spending more time and money on cleaning, it is also about radically improving standards. “If our carriages are clean and we respect our fleet more than in the past, I think passengers will do the same and litter and vandalism will become less of a problem.”

It’s just a walk in the park... New statistics show people who live close to parks exercise more frequently

P

BASIL NAIMET

eople over the age of 45 living close to parks and bushland are more likely to walk or jog than those who don’t. A new study shows that 200,000 people over the age of 45 living near parks are more inclined to take part in physical activity because the parks are within close proximity to where they live. The report, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine showed that as the amount of greenery increased by 20 per cent of the greater mass of land, the odds of people living within a kilometre of the parklands, taking a weekly walk increased by six per cent. Inner West resident Meryl Constance takes advantage of living across from one of the scenic areas of Marrickville. Exercising regularly, the 69-year-old said she loves Steel Park and its surrounds. Looking at the wide open spaces it’s no wonder she enjoys a walk – and often. “I walk seven days a week, at least twice a day for the exercise. I enjoy walking my dog, this really is a beautiful area,” she said. Proximity to parks is what made Ms Constance move to the area. The report showed that people who live near open spaces are 10 per cent more likely to exercise more than once a week than those who have access to limited green space. “We moved here six years ago. One of the reasons was the close proximity to the parklands and the beautiful surrounds.”

Let Adora Handmade Chocolates...

unforgettably rich, sweet and fulfilling

It was a passion for chocolate that drove two sisters to create Adora Handmade Chocolates in 1993, part-time from home. Winning numerous Gold and Silver awards and contracts, such as supplying the Sydney Opera House, increased demand for their unique chocolates and forced them in 1997 to relocate to commercial premises. In 2006, they opened a second retail store located within the Wentworth Connection in Sydney’s CBD. In 2011 they opened a third retail store located in Parramatta. Adora Handmade Chocolates has developed a reputation for truffles with vibrant, fresh flavours. Eschewing fancy moulds and decorations. Adora Handmade Chocolates followed their customer’s preference for a more natural look. Their customers were clamouring for fresh cream chocolates without added preservatives or artificial flavours and that is exactly what they got and continue to receive. The highest standards are upheld and the fresh ingredients include Belgian Callebaut chocolate, cream cultured butter, raspberry, lime, passionfruit, mango, freshly brewed espresso coffee and wattleseed (a species of ‘bush tucker – native Australian food’) as well as the more traditional pralines, ganache and marzipans. A large non-dairy selection is also produced and most chocolates are gluten free. Adora Handmade Chocolates caters for corporate events, weddings and christenings, and creates hampers or giftware for special occasions. Their famous chocolate baskets fi lled with chocolates are great for no-fuss birthdays or special events.

The Shocking Truth About Roof Restoration

16

If you’ve ever been concerned about the condition of your roof, then this could be the most important article you read this year. Unscrupulous roof restoration salespeople have been telling unsuspecting homeowners that they need a full roof restoration (clean, repair, re-point, seal, and paint) when in many cases all that they need is a simple repair. This has been going on for years but in recent times has reached epidemic levels. Here’s what typically happens... A telemarketer or door-to-door canvasser offers you a free roof inspection. Sounds like good idea right...? It is a good idea unless the roof inspector (usually a salesperson) does what unfortunately happens in many of these instances: he or she will grossly exaggerate the problems and insist that you really need a full roof restoration when perhaps you don’t. Now there are many instances where a roof restoration is beneficial. But there are also many instances where all you may need is simple roof repair. Local company Reliance Roof Restoration offer a free roof safety inspection where you get the option of actually seeing your roof close up. Any problems are actually pointed out to you. That way, you can be certain that any problems they advise you of are real and not made up or exaggerated. You can either accompany the inspector on the roof, or if you’re unable to do that, you’ll be shown photos taken on a high resolution digital camera. If your roof is fine and needs no work at all, then

by Francis A Bevan

Mercury In Cancer Trines Neptune; June 1st - July 21st.

Reliance will advise you of that. If all that you need is a small repair, then Reliance will advise you of that. If you’d like to have your roof restored, that’ fine... Reliance would be happy to provide a quote for this service. If you would like a quote on having your roof restored, you’ll get $600 off the quote if you call by next Wednesday. By the way, you’ll be placed under absolutely no obligation whatsover and this service is free for anyone with a home that’s over 12 years in age. Here’s what one satisfied client said of their experience in dealing with Reliance Roof Restoration: “A professional approach by all associated with the job. I was impressed with your attention to detail and advice on other (snall) problems. Follow-up inspection and after job touch-up work was particularly impressive. The friendly nature of all the workers made them a pleasure to deal with. I would have no hesitation in recommending ‘Reliance Roof Restoration’ to anyone wanting their roof restored.” Ken Durham

There’s absolutely no point in digging your heels in if you have a difference of opinion with others as this will only make things more difficult. AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

You’re feeling revved up and energised, ready to throw yourself into whatever comes along. Someone close to you could call on your help, in which case you’ll be only too happy to give them a hand. Get your kids active e all know being healthy involves movement and many people enjoy moving so much they even motivate others to get moving too. If you have ever thought of doing your bit to get kids up and moving there is a great government website you should check out. It’s www.ausport.gov.au and it outlines the Active After-School Communities program (AASC). From the site: Be part of a national project that gets kids moving! Around Australia, 150,000 kids have been jumping, throwing, catching, running, dancing, swimming, cycling, climbing, kicking, rowing, skiing, somersaulting... thanks to the Active Afterschool Communities program. You can be part of this program by becoming a community coach at your local school or out of school hours care service. The Australian Sports Commission’s Active After-School Communities (AASC) program aims to engage traditionally non-active primary school-aged children by providing free sport and other structured physical activity programs in the after-school timeslot at over 3,200 schools and out of school hours care services across Australia. The AASC program has already trained over 30,000 community coaches who run a huge variety of activity programs across

H

ere is a quick experiment I got from Alwyn Cosgrove. Stand up and hold a single dumbbell out to your right side, as you would in the fi nishing position of a lateral raise. What muscles are working? Obviously, it’s your right deltoid among a few other shoulder muscles. But think about how your torso stays upright with that dumbbell hanging out in space. Your centre of gravity is off, so something besides your right deltoid must be working pretty hard to keep you from leaning over. In this case, it’s your left oblique. It’s working to stabilise your spine, allowing your right deltoid to lift that weight and hold it out there away from your body. Now imagine that the oblique on your left side is weak, or recently injured. You wouldn’t be able to lift that dumbbell, since the muscles charged with protecting your spine aren’t prepared to do their job. Your body cares more about the health and safety of your spine than it does about the size of your shoulders. Your best strategy, then, is to rehabilitate and strengthen your obliques, thus releasing the brake on your muscle development. Stomping on the accelerator by increasing the volume of your shoulder training wouldn’t do any good, and might make

Elisha is a registered nurse and midwife who has years of experience working in emergency departments, general wards and maternity wards

things considerably worse. Let’s assign some hypothetical numbers, and say your right deltoid can lift 30 pounds for 10 reps. To achieve overload and force growth, we have to train the deltoid to do one of two things: lift 31 pounds for 10 reps, or 30 pounds for 11 or more reps. But let’s say your core muscles can only handle 29 pounds for 10 reps. A bodybuilder might say the solution is to fi nd a way to overload the delts while bypassing the core. Ultimately, the strategy is counterproductive; it only exacerbates the imbalance. I’d take the opposite approach, and do everything I could to release the brakes.

SEASON SHAPES UP FOR METROPOLITAN ORCHESTRA L

ove is helping to inspire the next round of concerts for The Metropolitan Orchestra (TMO). The TMO General Manager Bevan Rigato recently married long-time partner in life – and music – the orchestra’s artistic director and chief conductor Sarah-Grace Williams. The wedding was held at the spectacular Skilogalee winery in South Australia’s Clare Valley. The couple love their wine and Skilogalee also boasts one of the best restaurants in the Clare. The winery has been a sponsor of TMO for over a year. Bevan and Sarah-Grace were married among the vines and then dined with guests on the balcony. Appropriately, it was be a very musical affair with a slew of TMO musicians performing including John Benz (CoPrincipal Cello), Svetlana Yaroslavskaya (Principal Flute), Andrew Doyle (Principal Clarinet), Lucie Benz (Flute), Alisha Coward (Clarinet) and Lindsay Irik (Violin). Also singing and performing was a close friend of the couple, Australian jazz singer Josh Kyle (currently on Delta’s team on ‘The Voice’). Bevan and Sarah-Grace then flew off to Vanuatu for eight days of complete rest and relaxation after an amazingly full year that included nine subscription series concerts, six sell-out Opera House appearances and two huge concerts with James Morrison and David Helfgott. They even moved both office and home over the Christmas break! No rest for the (musically) wicked

though! Immediately after their return they’ll be into rehearsals for their June 22 and June 23 Met Series 2 concert – featuring Australian marimba virtuoso Claire Edwardes playing Chilean-Australian Daniel Rojas’ all new ‘Chamber Concerto’, as well as perennial favourites Mozart’s ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusic’ and Haydn’s ‘London Symphony’. Recognised throughout Australia as one of the most striking and important percussionists of her generation, Claire Edwardes will bring magnificent vibrancy and impeccable skill to a Latin-inspired rhythmic musical event in the distinctive Rojas style. Ms Edwardes, from Tempe, adds to what was already shaping up as an amazing mid-year series of concerts. The Metropolitan Orchestra, with its artistic director and chief conductor Sarah-Grace Williams, is one of Australia’s premier orchestras. Having conducted more than 130 performances over the past two years, Sarah-Grace remains in great demand in 2013. In addition to the regular subscription ‘Met’ series concerts, which are now in their fifth year, the orchestra and their famous conductor regularly perform at Sydney’s major venues and with some of Australia’s finest guest artists. The upcoming concerts on June 22 and June 23 will be at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney and the Balmain Town Hall respectively. For tickets, call 8007 7131.

THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD T

he high energy rockers of Thirty Seconds to Mars will be unleashed on Sydney when they tour here later this year. The popular rock band, which is led by well-known actor Jared Leto, will embark on a national tour and stop by at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Sunday, August 11. This tour will coincide with the recent release of Thirty Seconds to Mars’ highly anticipated fourth studio album entitled ‘Love Lust Faith + Dreams’. Produced by Leto and previous collaborator Steve Lillywhite (who has worked with names such as U2, The Rolling Stones and The Smiths), the latest album will be their best to date. Fans should expect to be pleasantly surprised by the new material, which marks a change in direction for the band. The first single ‘Up in the Air’ has already garnered significant attention after it debuted in space after being played on the International Space Station. August will not be the first trip to Australia for Thirty Seconds to Mars, they previously played sell-out theatre tours in 2007 and 2010. After beginning in 1998 as a family project between brothers Jared and Shannon Leto, Thirty Seconds To Mars later added guitarist Tomo Milicevic to their line up and has since grown into a chart-topping band that has sold over five million albums across the globe. Their self-titled debut impressed listeners and critics and was followed up by sophomore album ‘A Beautiful Lie’, which helped cement their position in the charts.

Success was on the cards again when the band released their third album ‘This Is War’, which went multi platinum throughout Europe and reached number 2 on the US

Alternative Albums and Digital Albums charts. Thirty Seconds to Mars will play at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Sunday,

August 11. For bookings or more information on the show, call 136 100 or visit www.ticketmaster. com.au.

CHATTER ON THE BOX WITH NATHAN TAYLOR T

here’s been some chatter of late that ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ could be making a comeback to Channel Ten in 2014. While this hasn’t been confirmed by network bosses, it’s understood the fledging station is looking to get back into the talent show market. ‘SYTYCD’ was Ten’s last big talent show hit after recent offerings like ‘Everybody Dance Now’ and ‘I Will Survive’ failed to fire. CBS in America has postponed the season finale of comedy ‘Mike & Molly’ because the episode features a tornado event. CBS said they were holding back the season finale of the show due to the recent tornado disaster in Oklahoma which killed more than 20 people. CBS confirmed it will air the episode at a later date. ‘Mike & Molly’ airs on Nine in Australia.

Everyone’s favourite Aussie actress Lisa McCune is back on our screens next month in the new Channel Ten show, ‘Reef Doctors’. Running the remote Hope Island Clinic, Sam Stewart (McCune) is an accomplished doctor, who with her team, looks after the residents of all the neighbouring islands, as well as the holidaymakers and thrill seekers who visit the area. Not only a GP, Sam is a single mother with a free spirit and a determination – for an unusual hobby: venom. ‘Reef Doctors’ begins Sunday, June 9 at 6.30pm. Also, set to hit our screens via The Comedy Channel is crazy US reality show ‘Killer Karaoke’. The show sees contestants challenged to perform their favourite songs in extreme and outrageous circumstances to win a cash prize. Hosted by Steve-O, ‘Killer Karaoke’ puts contestants in potentially dangerous, humiliating and sometimes painful situations where they have to keep on singing right to the end. Some of the stunts include getting dunked into an ice-cold water tank filled with snakes, receiving a face full of pigeons (what?), getting their butt waxed or being attacked by dangerous dogs… sounds unreal! ‘Killer Karaoke’ airs Sunday nights at 7.30pm from June 9. Bio Channel’s ‘Intervention’ has been axed after 13 seasons. In the history of the show, 243 interventions took place with 156 individuals apparently still sober to this day. That show that every promiscuous teenager is obsessed with, ‘Skins’, is returning to SBS2 next month with season six. The UK are set to screen the seventh and final season in July. ‘Skins’ airs Thursday, June 6 at 9.35pm.

Lastly, more doctors have signed on to Foxtel’s new series ‘Embarrassing Bodies Down Under’. Australian doctors Dr Ginni Mansberg, Dr Sam Hay and Dr Brad McKay will join the UK’s Dr Christian Jessen for the local series. Prior to Dr Christian’s arrival next month, these three highly experienced local doctors will be

working out of the ‘Embarrassing Bodies Down Under’ mobile clinic in the search for patients to appear in the series. The first stop this week was Parramatta and I am so curious to know what they found here in the west! This is a great concept overall and I wonder how different the Aussie version will be from the original.

POSITIONS VACANT All three teirs of government must cooperate to maintain Marrickville’s sporting grounds.

We must work together: MP’s message on sporting parks

F

BASIL NAIMET

ederal Member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese last week co-hosted an Inner West sports forum with Leichhardt Mayor Darcy Byrne. Members of sporting and community associations attended to discuss how the three levels of government could work together to maintain local sporting fields for the growing number of participants in the Inner West. The meeting was designed to highlight the importance of keeping sporting fields maintained for the use of the community from juniors to the elite level and providing facilities to cater for the growing numbers. Mr Albanese said it was important for the three government bodies to collaborate for local communities to see the benefits. “It’s really important the three levels of government keep working together to deliver high quality sports facilities in our local community,” Mr Albanese said. Marrickville Football Club had received $2 million from the $20 million

Wests Tigers are hoping to have several players return from injury for the round 13 clash against Penrith Panthers. The match will be played on Sunday,

June 9, at 3pm at Centrebet Stadium. Full-back James Tedesco (leg), winger Marika Koroibete (foot) and back-rower Liam Fulton (hamstring) suffered injuries in the win over the Cowboys at Leichhardt Oval last Friday. All three will continue to be monitored.

the Federal Government had distributed to Inner West grounds. Canterbury District Football Association President Ian Holmes whose association oversees the football club said Mackey Park was well served. “The benefits Marrickville Football Club received were great. Four to five years ago the Federal Government collaborated with Marrickville Council to provide funds to undertake a lot of work. New lighting was put in, and new drainage,” he said. “Communities are growing, and more people are participating in sporting activities. With that fact, we need to provide these people with modern facilities.” Glen Dwyer Director and Media Officer for the Newtown Jets said all three governments have been great with their home ground at Henson Park. “In 2010 we received $1 million from the Federal Government and Marrickville Council contributed $100,000 that went towards changing the grandstand’s roof, canteen upgrade, disabled facilities and medical facilities.” Mr Dwyer also said juniors from other sporting groups used the facilities.

Sport Jets’ strong foundation Front rowers take the lead in intense foundation match

T

he Frank Hyde Shield series that is contested on an annual basis between the Newtown and North Sydney clubs has developed a life-force of its own. Th is was evident from the intensity of last Saturday’s encounter between the two foundation clubs at North Sydney Oval and the big crowd in attendance. The Bears led 20-16 at half-time but the Jets dominated the second half, scoring four tries to one in that period and coming home strongly for a 40-24 victory. North Sydney started in good fashion, scoring a try in the fi fth minute in the Molly Dive Stand corner and with the conversion soaring over from the sideline. Jets front-rower Kane Evans, who was to have a huge impact on this game, crashed through the Norths defence to score in the tenth minute and Paul Rokolati’s conversion tied the scores up at 6-all. The Bears’ quality kicking game was used to good effect in creating Norths’ next two tries. Jets half-back Ryley Jacks displayed guile in scoring in the 27th minute, and the ever-dangerous Nafe Seluini darted over from dummy-half after Saulala Houma had advanced the ball well into Norths’ twentymetre zone. a high after they had scored a long-distance try virtually on the forty-minutes siren. The second half proved to be a good advertisement for the NSW Cup competition, with both teams registering high completion rates and the game being played at a fast pace. The match was still anyone’s to win with Newtown leading 26-24 with 12 minutes

remaining. Jets front-row juggernauts Kane Evans and Saulala Houma powered their way over for tries in the last 10 minutes, both of which were converted by Paul Rokolati who added a penalty goal for Newtown’s fi nal winning margin of 40-24. The Jets play away against CanterburyBankstown Bulldogs this Saturday, June 1 at Belmore Sports Ground at 3pm.
