esidents of Stanmore have smiles as wide as the Cheshire cat following a unanimous decision by Marrickville Council to allow dog owners to walk their dogs “off leash” at Weekley Park in Stanmore. The move will be trialled, due to begin shortly, and will allow dog owners to walk their dogs without a leash between the hours of 5pm and 8am. The motion which had been put to the Council
previously, was passed on Tuesday night. A packed public gallery was in attendance to support the motion and Councillor Jo Haylen who brought the motion initially. The commitment from the residents was strong as a number of residents spoke glowingly to the Councillors of a community brought together through the mutual activity they shared. Cr Haylen was pleased with the outcome and thanked the residents for their support. “I would like to congratulate all the residents who organised and signed the petition in supporting a timed dog off-leash area at Weekley Park,” she said.
260 residents had signed the partition to introduce the trial, however it was the support of non-dog owners that tipped the decision in their favour. “Even non-dog owners have spoken or emailed me in support of this, which shows how important it is for the community,” she said. The motion will also adjust the times the park can be used during daylight saving hours. In a similar decision Cr Haylen also welcomed the passage of a motion recently to see Camperdown Memorial Rest Park modified with off-leash hours operating 24 hours during weekdays.

his week Kevin Rudd was back in the spotlight – declaring that he’s changed his mind on same-sex marriage. Th is is despite opposing it when he was Prime Minister – when he actually could have wielded some real influence. With a 2,000 word blog on his website, he explained that his epiphany came after meeting up with a gay staffer who’d had to reconcile his sexuality and strong Pentecostal faith. A seemingly innocuous press conference followed, and with a few fl icks of the hair and a few cheesy lines, one K Rudd (as he likes to refer to himself) was back, baby. beliefs have given way to her political radar. Truth is, I don’t think Julia Gillard wanted to have a fight with a conservative, deeply religious Opposition Leader in Tony Abbott. She’s left a leadership gap – and Kevin Rudd has seized it, and grabbed it with both hands. There’s no chance that his leadership can be revived for this election – that ship has sailed – but the game is far from over.

Any seasoned Rudd watcher knows that Tuesday’s media appearance was as much about his leadership as it was gay marriage. Make no mistake – Rudd has not given up his leadership ambition. That little ‘backfl ip’ exercise was to remind everyone he’s not going anywhere and again highlight the differences between him and his arch enemy, Julia Gillard. In not supporting gay marriage, Ms Gillard has ignored what could have been a great Labor legacy – I think personal

The initiative called ‘Suspended Coffee’ originated from Naples where those less fortunate who can’t afford to buy a cup of coffee could go to coffee shops and ask for coffee and food that was paid for by previous customers. Suspended coffee was introduced by Labor Councillor Chris Woods, who said the initiative would be welcomed in Marrickville. “Many of our local cafĂŠs do this in one way or another already and know most of their needy customers, hopefully this program will encourage many others who currently cannot afford the benefits of inner city living to enjoy these benefits,â€? he said. Help for those in crisis: New law, app for domestic violence
Building custom made kitchens for over 30 years
omestic Violence victims will be better protected and supported under reforms that passed the NSW Parliament this week. The legislation facilitates information sharing between government agencies and non-government domestic violence services to support victims in cases where Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders (ADVO’s) are taken out, or a person has been charged with a domestic violence related offence and the victim has consented to the sharing of information. It will also allow agencies to share information about defendants and victims of domestic violence if there is a serious threat to the life or health of a person and it is impracticable or unreasonable to obtain the consent of the person whose information is provided. “Th is would allow exchange of information including the whereabouts of the defendant in a domestic violence case, their mental health status or drug use and will help authorities ensure the safety of victims, said NSW Attorney General, Greg Smith. “Th is Bill strikes the appropriate balance between privacy legislation and the important need to facilitate information sharing between agencies to support domestic violence victims as quickly and as efficiently as possible. Police Minister, Mike Gallacher, welcomed the news. “Police can refer victims to support services in cases where there are applications for ADVOs without the police needing to fi rst seek their consent, he said.
D
138ICD3145
“Support agencies will then contact the victim to offer their services. A survey showed that 92 per cent of domestic violence victims were happy to be automatically referred to support services. “Th is is an important step in our work to support victims of domestic violence, said Pru Goward, the Minister for Women. “Sometimes women are reluctant to ask for help, but can gain enormous benefits when it is provided. These support services can give victims the courage to leave abusive relationships while providing them with practical help and referral to counselling, Ms Goward said. The amendments to the Crimes (Domestic and Personal Violence) Act form part of the government’s Domestic Violence Justice Strategy announced last year and arose from recommendations by the Auditor General and a joint report of the Australian and NSW Law Reform Commissions into family violence. A working party involving the Department of Attorney General and Justice, NSW Police, the Department of Family and Community Services, Legal Aid, NSW Health, and the Privacy Commissioner developed the changes and consulted with non-government agencies. And in a related initiative, a new smart phone app has also been developed to help victims of domestic violence. The Aurora domestic violence app has been developed by the State Government to help people in a domestic violence situation make informed choices. It is free on iTunes and Google Play Stores.

iberal candidate for Grayndler Cedric Spencer said families, households, retirees and pensioners in Grayndler would benefit if the Coalition won the Federal election in September, thanks to a “strong plan” designed to manage Australia’s budget. Mr Spencer reiterated Tony Abbott’s Budget Reply speech last week, saying that income tax cuts, pension and benefit increases would be sustainable because the carbon tax would be removed. “We’ve made the responsible savings and have a strong plan for managing Australia’s budget,” he said. Mr Spencer didn’t outline where the savings would be, but gave one indication. “We would get rid of bureaucrat numbers, which are currently 20,000 – we’d reduce those numbers by 12,000.” He said further measures a Coalition Government would introduce will create nearly $5 billion a year, “which will be more than enough for tax cuts without a carbon tax”. Hall Greenland, the Grayndler Greens candidate said Mr Abbott’s austerity measures didn’t make economic sense. “We need to maintain and increase government spending on education, housing and environmental improvements,” he said. “The money is there, without huge borrowing to pay for things like Gonski, Disability Australia, genuine action on climate change, improved public transport, proper funding for universities and TAFE, and reversing the cuts to single parent pensions.” Mr Spencer was confident his party’s policies would advantage the Grayndler electorate, “Our policies are fully costed and fully funded”.

egislation to be introduced in State Parliament by Opposition Leader John Robertson that will give child care centres in NSW the opportunity to reject children who have not been immunised. Opposition Health Spokesman Andrew McDonald said currently child care centres have to accept children who haven’t been fully vaccinated. “As it stands now child care centres can’t knock back anyone who has a child that has not been fully vaccinated. What we are proposing is an amendment of the Public Health Act that will give child care centres the option of turning people away if they chose,” he said. “But it also means that the centre can use its discretion and accept the children with a provision that they will have their children fully immunised.” NSW Minister for Health, Jillian Skinner said the issue of vaccinations has been on the agenda. “I have for some time been discussing with the NSW Chief Health Officer measures to deal with unvaccinated children accessing child care services… [I’ll be] amending legislation in the near future,” she said. The Greens will be holding a public meeting on Saturday, June 1 at 2.30pm at Pioneers Park, Leichhardt to lobby the O’Farrell Government to “hand back the land”. Mr Greenland said the buildings on the land were heritage buildings, but ready for use. “A recent conservation report says they are sound,” he said. JASON MORRISON Radio 2UE Drive Presenter The Voice of the People
The day our legal system buckled so we could tolerate a total disrespect of Australia here are two kinds of people in this country – Australians and people who just live here. You can judge for yourself which category Lakemba man Mohammed Issai Issaka fits into. At the start of the week Mohammed was on trial before Magistrate Jacqueline Milledge for his part in those ugly Muslim riots last year. As the hearing started, like everyone in the court, he was required to stand. Instead he refused. He believes it compromised his religion – or more precisely, his interpretation of the Islamic faith. Instead of insisting he respect Australia’s legal custom – or reminding him that our system works for all people of all religions, the Magistrate negotiated with him and found a solution that wouldn’t upset him. Put simply, she tolerated his intolerance of our system. It was a moment that saw the system tested – and it buckled. What a powerful statement it would have been if the Magistrate had just said “NO”. Instead she went the path of least resistance and allowed him to express his disrespect of our long standing traditions.
T
She let you down. On my 2UE radio program, Mohammed’s lawyer, Stephen Hopper, told me his client had migrated to Australia from Africa “several years ago”. “He chose to come to Australia with his family,” he said. I assume he chose us because he liked the freedoms, safety, and fairness of our country and its institutions. It would be good if he showed some appreciation for why the nation that accepted him as a migrant works so well – respect for the law. Australia can’t afford to run two or more standards – just because of religious sensitivities. Where do you start and where do you stop? Do we then start saying some laws don’t apply to some people because of their faith? Keep going down that way and we should give the whole game away. If you call this country home, you respect its customs, its traditions and its ways. Don’t like it? Leave. Th is week a giant hole was blown in the side of public confidence in our legal system, when it actually should have been one of its proudest moments.

Get your Rock ‘n’ Roll on! Manning Bar hosts the Sydney Rock ‘n’ Roll and Alternative Markets BASIL NAIMET
ydney University’s Manning Bar will be rocking to the sounds of some of Australia’s best live bands on Sunday, June 2 from 10.30am. It’s all part of The Sydney Rock ‘n’ Roll and Alternative Market, a great alternative to your average music market. If you’re a die hard rock ‘n’ roll fan get your hands on rock ‘n’ roll fashion clothing, and alternative and vintage fashion for men, women and children. Also take the time to browse through the selection of jewellery, records, CDs, DVDs, books, art and collectables. There’s international food stalls, children’s activities, live music, DJ’s a classic vehicle display and lounge in the popular Tiki Bar courtyard. There will be three levels of music, entertainment and culture related stalls. Bands like rock giants, The Detonators, who have toured most parts of Australia and are visiting Sydney for the fi rst time in a while, will pump out the rock tunes. Market organiser Tiffany Palmer said the band were fantastic live. “They’ve played all major blues and roots festivals more than once and have ventured into Europe with their high powered original show,” she said. “They are appearing exclusively at the market and we are thrilled to have them on board,” she said. Ms Palmer said other bands performing were The Big Blind Ray Trio, with their blend of Blues, Southern Rock, Gospel and

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Th is week’s Full Moon gives you a chance to shrug off inhibitions and insecurities. In sexual matters, you could learn a thing or two if you open your mind. Be prepared to respond to a loved one in a sympathetic manner and be careful of acting possessive, as this will only lead to power struggles. Your fi nancial affairs need putting into order and you will need to be prepared for unexpected bills.
GEMINI
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
There is going to be a need to sort out some serious relationship issues otherwise break ups and separations are likely. A serious talk with a loved one is what’s needed. Very often, how you relate to others depends on how you relate to yourself. Thus, if you are at one with yourself, it is easier for others to work out what you want from others and what you are likely to be able to offer them as part of the relationship.
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
The Full Moon highlights problems on the job front. It’s obvious that something is ending in your working life, but that’s nothing to be concerned about. For every ending there’s a new beginning. However you would be wise to proceed with caution when it comes to handling prickly issues with colleagues, bosses and clients. Perhaps it is time to look for something new that fully utilises your skills and talents!

The Full Moon highlights several issues that need to be dealt with concerning your children. A child’s progress at school and their well being is the fi rst of these priorities. Perhaps a younger member of the family needs to be taken in hand or extra help arranged in matters of schooling. Romantically, too there are issues which require your immediate attention and these can’t be ignored or put on hold.

The spotlight is on your home and family so before you act, you need a well thought out plan. Be sure to take some time to make sure that your strategies are workable. An electrical appliance or something to do with your home may either need to be repaired or replaced. You are likely to be feeling impatient and restless as you examine many aspects of your life and fi nd them wanting. It may be that you desire a move of home from a neighbourhood that is too stifl ing. If you are a student there will be certain issues that need sorting out with your studies before you can proceed confidently forward. Also be careful when travelling as delays, accidents and break downs are all possible.

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
The spotlight is on your fi nancial affairs so this is the time to sort out your fi scal position for the greatest advantage. Spendthrift tendencies will need corrective measures as you need to be prepared for some unexpected expenses. Like a plant, some judicious pruning and encouraging would do your bank balance a lot of good. A sensible budget will help you put everything into place and come out ahead.

With the Full Moon falling in your sign be careful of being hormonal, stressed out and argumentative. It is also a sign that you need to take better care of your health and to stop putting everyone else’s needs before your own. There may be a number of family issues to handle and your home may become something of a battlefield. What you need is to do something special for yourself so why not revamp your image.

Th is week’s Full Moon is bringing unavoidable emotional issues to the surface. Passionate affairs are likely to be the centre of attention as you come to realise how many unconscious forces have been at work in your private life. Problems regarding friendships are going to be a concern. Either a friend is going to need a helping hand or you may have some issues that need to be addressed with either a colleague, friend or loved one before that relationship can proceed along smooth lines once again. Remember to keep the lines of communication open and not to be overly judgemental as nobody is perfect and we all make mistakes at times!

Seek advice on statins f you are trying to lower your cholesterol because you have been told you have to, are on cholesterol lowering medication and also trying to improve your fitness, you may not be getting the benefits you should be getting from your extra activity. A new study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, shows that simvastatin, a cholesterol-lowering statin drug, seems to “block the ability of exercise to improve… fitness levels” among people who are overweight or obese. Researcher John Thyfault, an associate professor of nutrition and exercise physiology at the University of Missouri has released a statement on the issue. “Statins have only been used for about 15 to 20 years, so we don’t know what the long-term effects of stati. If the drugs cause complications with improving or maintaining fitness, not everyone should be prescribed statins.” Th is study was conducted with 37 people between ages 25 and 59 all of whom were obese and had low fitness levels. Over 12 weeks, everyone participated in a fitness program; about half of the participants also took 40 milligrams of simvastatin every day. Researchers found that the participants taking the simvastatin experienced less benefit from the exercise than those who didn’t take the drug. For example, those

There are many studies showing other side effects of statins and that many people have to stop taking them because of these effects. “Patients should still proceed with caution when considering statins,” says Dr Barbara Roberts, director of the Women’s Cardiac Center at Miriam Hospital in Rhode Island. “Studies have not shown that statins help women who don’t already have heart disease, even if they have risk factors like obesity and family history.” That’s compared to a recent study that found a 30 per cent reduction in heart attacks in people who follow a Mediterranean diet. Like anything to do with your fitness or health, trust your intuition, ask questions about anything you are putting in your body and it’s always good to get a second opinion on important issues.
P
artials get their name from doing a partial range of motion instead of the full range done in most lifts. Depending on what range of motion you work in, you’ll typically be stronger than the full range. These are also great for people engaged in any sport or martial art. How many sports involve even parallel squats? Very few. Instead you can get stronger just in the top quarter range of motion which will translate over to more speed, bigger jumps, etc. Full ranges of motion are great. I highly advise you to do them. But if that’s all you do then you’re missing out on some of the best training possible to strengthen your connective tissues and bones. It’s just that if you only ever lift the comparably light weights that you need to for full ranges then you’re not going to build these areas to as great of a degree as you possibly could. You can work different partials like a quarter, half or three-quarter squat. You can make even smaller jumps doing progressive distance training. There are many benefits and different ways to use partials. One of the simplest in my opinion is working the top quarter range of motion. Th is can be done with any exercise though they’re typically done with the big compound movements like

squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press and sometimes rows. Not only can you use really heavy weights but partials tend to be even safer than full ranges of motion. All of these lifts will strengthen your bones, tendons and ligaments. You don’t need to do them all. Just pick one or a few to start with. As with everything you’ll want to build up to this slowly. Don’t go too far too fast as your body may not be ready for it. But you may surprise yourself in a short time just how much you can handle.

Australia’s biggest play date Toy and Game Expo has all the latest products for little and big kids alike fter its hugely successful launch in 2012, Australia’s biggest play date, The Toy and Game Expo, has confi rmed its return this June long weekend, with even more hands-on fun for small kids and big kids alike! With no other events of its kind in the country, the organisers are determined to make this year’s Expo even bigger and better. Families will have the opportunity to test out the latest in toys and games from around the world and play with everything from Slot Cars, the N-Strike Elite Nerf Arena and The Trash Pack through to Play-Doh, Lego, the latest board games and all of the classics like chess. Last year’s Expo played host to over 6,000 little and big kids aged between five and 105, and this year more than 10,000 people are expected to visit the familyfriendly Expo. The Toy and Game Expo exists as a place in which toys can come to life and be shared in a hands-on environment that fosters and encourages interactivity. “We believe the world is a place to play in together and enjoy, and we love the tactile and social experiences that we have through toys and games with our families,” said Charles Bishop, Coconvenor. “Toys should be played with and shared, not kept in a box! That’s why the Expo encourages everyone to get involved and build, share, race, squish, ride, imagine, jump, challenge, laugh, explore and create!” Visitors can expect to see the latest toys

CHATTER ON THE BOX WITH NATHAN TAYLOR E
veryone’s favourite cringeworthy show ‘Embarrassing Bodies’ is set to get a local version. Ironically titled ‘Embarrassing Bodies Down Under’, the show will feature the likeable Dr Christian Jessen from the hit UK series. If you’ve never seen it before, ‘Embarrassing Bodies’ is a show that tackles obscure medical conditions people are too embarrassed to talk to their doctor about – yet they’re happy to air their issues on national TV… go figure! Foxtel’s Lifestyle YOU is looking for patients to treat in the first Aussie series, apply by emailing bodies@shineaustralia.com. I’ve never been into ‘Doctor Who’ but I know there are thousands of you out there that are. Well, good news ‘Doctor Who’ is coming back with a brand new series. Matt Smith, who’s played the Doctor since 2010,
will be back for the eighth season. It’s hard to believe freaky vampire series ‘True Blood’ has reached six seasons with the latest set to air two hours after the US on Showcase next month. From June 17 the show will air at the strange time of 3.30pm on Mondays with a primetime replay later at 8.30pm. Also set to return is ‘MasterChef Australia’; it begins on Channel Ten from Monday, June 3 at 7.30pm. 22 brand new contestants will battle out for Australia’s coveted cooking title in the latest series. It will be interesting to see how well this series goes considering the huge success of ‘My Kitchen Rules’ earlier this year. Will people have a cooking show hangover? Kath and Kim’s return to television
didn’t last long with their clip show ‘The Kath and Kim Kountdown’ dumped by Channel Seven after one episode. ‘K&K’ will be replaced this Sunday by ‘Border Security’ and ‘The Force’. I must say I’m loving beyond belief this series of ‘Celebrity Apprentice Australia’. There’s been some great, fiery moments already and with some outspoken contestants still in I expect plenty more to come. It still lacks the gloss and production values of its American counterpart but it sure makes up for it with some interesting celebrity encounters. ‘The Footy Show’ always seems to get controversial headlines but what happened this week with the whole “ugly baby” Look-A-Likes segment was just ridiculous. I just want to say how silly and unnecessary
the whole thing was. ‘The Footy Show’ handled it well with their reply, so hopefully the family will get on with it and viewers still get to see some great Look-A-Likes. Channel Ten will broadcast the new Stephen King sci-fi horror mini-series ‘Under The Dome’ next month. Based on the popular King novel, Under The Dome is the story of a small town inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The town’s inhabitants must survive the postapocalyptic conditions while trying to discover what the dome is, where it came from and when it will go away. So, the premise sounds absolutely brilliant and will no doubt do very well on Ten if they put in a good timeslot. It premieres in the US on Monday, June 24, so expect it to be fast-tracked to our screens soon after.
