A little Albo grease Grayndler MP puts economic case forward to voters BASIL NAIMET

M

ember for Grayndler Anthony Albanese believes the Labor Government has put in plenty of elbow grease to responsibly manage the Australian economy. He wants this economic record to be judged when voters head to the polls in just two weeks. He said Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has made good economic judgements that were vital in keeping the economy flowing, which the public should consider when voting. “I think Kevin Rudd got the big calls right, on having an economic stimulus plan and not just waiting for the recession. “We would have gone into a recession they [Liberals] said was inevitable – that would have meant more people out of work. We’ve created almost a million jobs since we’ve been in government. That is critical.” Locally he said business was booming in suburbs like Ashfield, Petersham and Newtown thanks to Labor. “You see a lot of economic activity, in spite of the fact that Tony Abbott has continually tried to undermine confidence in the Australian economy. I’ve been in this office for 17 years and there has not been as much economic activity on Marrickville and Illawarra Roads as there is today,” he said. If Mr Albanese was re-elected to Grayndler, he would continue to do his best for the region: “I think I’ve shown to be a conviction politician for my local community”. That conviction was shown when he helped remove Julia Gillard from the top job. “It was going to be very difficult if we didn’t make the change. We had a primary vote in the 20’s and you can’t win an election from that position,” he admitted. On the question of a second airport, Mr Albanese said he supported a second airport, but it was up to the experts to decide where. He did commit however to the location being either Badgerys Creek or Wilton with building to commence early in the next term.

150 years of teaching

Parents, teachers and students have worked hard to create mosaics to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the school.

BASIL NAIMET

empe Public School will celebrate 150 years on Friday, August 30. The event will be commemorated with 10 spectacular mosaics that stand approximately 1.3 metres high and wide and are expected to be completed early next week. To date each mosaic design has taken a minimum of 150 hours of work. Principal Karen Sinclair said the work

T

put in was a remarkable feat, which involved teachers, students and parents. “A lot of parents have been helping out with the mosaics in and out of school hours. They have been fantastic. It takes about eight hours to do the grouting on each one. Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 designed what the mosaics would look like, then a local artist to put the designs for each one together. The fi nal product though was the hard work of the children and teachers.

The mosaics will be placed alongside each other in sequential order where they will tell the story of Tempe and how the school fits into the local area. Ms Sinclair said they will be placed at the front of the school. “Their purpose is to also reflect what it looks like inside. We want something aesthetically pleasing. The mosaic will be a representation of the inside of the school,” she said. The official opening will take place next Friday followed by a school assembly.

Rudd in real trouble at half way mark

A

t the half way point of this campaign, it is Tony Abbott’s election to lose and Kevin Rudd is in real trouble. Labor don’t have the cash for big election sweeteners and so far big promises that involve big spends are outside of the forward estimates. A $2 billion rescue package for the car manufacturing industry to 2025 and an uncosted proposed company tax cut to 20 per cent in the Northern Territory are both not in the budget forecast so they’re essentially second term promises. Ambitious with a healthy dose of delusion. Kevin Rudd is doing his best to exude confidence and has sought to remind people of his Lazarus-like political nature on a more regular basis. “I’ve been in a few tough spots before, a few of them, and I’ve managed to fight my way forward,” said Mr Rudd at one rousing speech in Adelaide. Oh like when you were dumped as leader, replaced by Julia Gillard, and then slowly climbed your way back up the greasy poll to sit on the top? How could we forge? It delivered three of the most tumultuous years in political history. But I don’t think such a reminder

Back to his old ways: Kevin Rudd.

anyway. Costings and demonstrating the ability to add-up is the Coalition’s biggest burden to this point. Labor will hound Tony Abbott until D-Day and when he does fi nally release all the detail (which will probably be election eve) he’s going to want to make sure there’s no fancy accounting. They’ve had six years to get the balance right.

At the half way point of this campaign, the mood for change is palpable. There’s still a fortnight to go but at this stage I predict Labor could lose 20 or more seats.

works as a re-election pitch. Voters won’t reward Mr Rudd for something they partly blame him for. Week three of the campaign, I can tell you that old Kevin Rudd is back and so are his most undesirable traits. He’s half an hour late to media conferences, takes a limited amount of questions (even on big policies) and often keeps his campaign hosts waiting. Kevin Rudd is a one man show and only his closest confidant Bruce Hawker is allowed into the tent. The most stark example of this was when Labor National Secretary George Wright and Mr Hawker had agreed on Saturday to take part in the People’s forum – a senior staff member on the ground knew nothing about such a deal. Nothing. Not even a series of gaffes and the dumping of a sexist-website-wieldingcandidate has managed to derail Tony Abbott so far. His staunch advocacy of the Paid Parental Leave plan has some colleagues within his own party shaking their heads. A recent poll showed it’s vote winner but I’m not so sure about that. Corporate type women on a higher than average wage, who stand to benefit the most, were probably going to vote for the Coalition

arriage equality for the gay and lesbian community took a positive turn when Marrickville Council showed continued support by passing a resolution on marriage equality at a recent meeting. “The Greens on council believe we need national marriage laws that give everyone equal rights and the choice to marry if they want to, rather than being discriminated against because of their sexual orientation,” Cr Sylvie Ellsmore said. Greens candidate for Grayndler Hall Greenland was vocal in his praise of the Council for putting aside political ideology and voting to support same sex marriage.

Police from Marrickville Local Area Command are investigating a serious crash in which a woman was run over after leaving her garage. Shortly after 10.15am on August 16, a 77-year-old woman walked from the garage of her home into Silver Lane. At the same time an 82-year-old man had driven a Hyundai Getz from the garage and was reversing the vehicle. The rear bumper bar of the vehicle struck the woman on the legs and she fell onto the road hitting her head. She was treated at the scene by Ambulance Paramedics and conveyed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition with head injuries. About 1.30pm police were advised of the collision and attended the location but were unable to locate any forensic evidence. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact police.

“Ending discrimination and giving everyone in our community the right to marry shouldn’t be a political plaything, it’s just the right thing to do,” he said. He was joined last Thursday at Marrickville Town Hall by Greens NSW Lead Senate candidate Cate Faehrmann, as well as NSW Greens Sexuality and Gender Identity Spokesperson Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC in voicing their support for same sex marriage legislation. Mr Greenland said parliament was ‘out of step’ with the public on this issue. Bureau of Statistics figures show 33,714 same sex couples were counted in the 2011 Census.

Crime crackdown: Abbott pledges to stop the guns CASSANDRA O CONNOR

pposition Leader Tony Abbott has announced a crackdown on gun crime. “I regret to say that the current Government in losing control of our borders has not only failed to stop the boats but has failed to stop the guns as well,” Mr Abbott said. “Under the former Coalition Government over 60 per cent of incoming air cargoes were screened, it is down to some 10 per cent, because of

O

some $60 million in cuts to the customs budget and some hundreds of personnel that have gone from our customs service.” Mr Abbott said the Coalition will put $100 million more into customs, particularly customs screening, introduce a minimum mandatory five year sentence for those found to be gun trafficking and will establish local gang squads in conjunction with police. NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell welcomed the announcement. “Th is will go a long way to stopping gun importation,” he said.

Council considers closure of Newtown markets to protect King Street business BASIL NAIMET

ewtown markets are on the brink of shutting down after a motion was passed by Marrickville Council to have the markets cease trading because they are a threat to local businesses on King Street. Liberal Councillor Mark Gardiner put the motion forward, claiming they are being transformed into a commercial entity. “A development application has been put in to increase stalls to 50, hot food is to be sold and the operating hours are to be extended from 10am till 7pm, Saturday and Sunday on either day, 52 weeks a year. I thought all of that was excessive,” Cr Gardiner said. “I’m concerned that the markets are growing significantly, to the point where the commercial activity is becoming a threat to businesses on King Street.” Four other councillors also agreed with Cr Gardiner: Cr Tyler (Liberal), Cr Woods and Cr Tsardoulias (Labor) and Cr Macri (Independent). Four councillors were not present to vote. Cr Gardiner said a number of retailers had approached him to express their concern about losing business to the markets. But Newtown Neighbourhood CEO Lisa Burns said she wanted to see evidence of businesses that were complaining. “If businesses are concerned, why hasn’t anything been tabled with Council? How many submissions opposing what we do

have been submitted? I can assure you there is more support for the markets than not. I have 2,500 signatures supporting the markets,” she said. Greens Councillor Sylvie Ellsmore said she was inundated with people voicing their objection to the markets closing. “I spent Saturday at the Newtown

markets, talking to local residents and visitors who came to express their anger. People see the Council decision as a mean spirited decision to cut funding to the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre,” she said. Whilst Cr Gardiner said he was not attacking the centre and it’s good work for

the community, Ms Burns said she was perplexed by the decision given the market won a Marrickville Business Achievement Award in recognition of its contribution to the Newtown precinct. Due to an appeal the markets will remain open until the appeal is heard. The matter will be raised in October.

New teacher support package NSW Govt steps up help for teaching graduates, gives more power to principals BASIL NAIMET

SW Government schools are set for a revolution in teaching that will see teachers entering the profession through university offered support, and the empowerment of principals to manage teacher performance. Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli announced last week the $155 million Great Teaching, Inspired Learning program (GTIL) will be implemented in response to parents’ dissatisfaction with NSW Government school teachers. “From next year all permanent beginning teachers in NSW Government schools will have two hours per week release time, to support the development of their skills in their fi rst year,” he said. Graduates who start teaching in 2014 will be given two hours support from experienced teachers in their fi rst year of placement, then one hour per week mentoring and support in their second year. “It is vital our new teachers are helped to develop their classroom practice and deal with a wide range of real-life school situations,” Mr Piccoli said. The program is part of the Government’s plan to come up to an international standard citing Singapore as an example. “The leading education systems internationally have similar standards in place and the evidence showed that NSW can follow, which will allow them to improve classroom practice to better

N

Education Minister Adrian Piccoli.

support students in NSW.” Under the GTIL program principals will also be empowered to deal with teachers who are underperforming. Mr Piccoli said underperforming teachers will be given appropriate support according to their needs, however if the support given does not produce the

desired outcome, and their performance remains unsatisfactory, the teacher will be dismissed. The Great Teaching, Inspired Learning blueprint was the fi rst of many initiatives to be developed by the Coalition in NSW, which contains a comprehensive set of reforms to improve teaching quality.

A statement from the NSW Teachers Federation said the GTIL program contained a number of encouraging developments particularly around support for beginning teachers. However the program also has a number of issues the Federation will pursue in the interest of supporting teachers.

Life after being a refugee As the debate over refugees continues, Marrickville supports newest citizens BASIL NAIMET

ith refugees and asylum seekers a hot election topic, one question is raised: What becomes of asylum seekers when they are resettled? Marrickville can proudly boast it nurtures them. Living a stateless existence in Syria is what motivated Mahmoud Abu-Qutmah to seek a better life. “I was born in Syria to Palestinian parents. My family were considered refugees, therefore we could not be recognised legally as citizens. I needed to fi nd a future for my wife and two-year-old son,” Mr Abu-Qutmah said. Forced to leave his family behind, he arrived on Christmas Island in October 2010. 18 months later he received a security clearance and a ‘bridging visa’– which effectively meant that he could travel anywhere in Australia. After reuniting with his wife and son, they moved to Sydney in April 2012. He is now expecting his Australian citizenship in 2015. Mr Abu-Qutmah by occupation is a cartoonist. He’s spent time in Lebanon drawing caricatures of political figures for a newspaper and a magazine. Since his arrival he has been busy working at the Addison Road Community Centre in Marrickville as an artist. General Manager Rosanna Barbero said when Mr Abu-Qutmah arrived he had no confidence. When they discovered he had a knack for sketching, they encouraged

him. “Mahmoud is an extraordinarily talented artist. He draws on his life experience of being a refugee. He encapsulates human rights, inequality, oppression, and injustices in his work, and it has a strong impact,” Ms Barbero said. “The Addison Road Community Centre

has been wonderful to me. They have really pushed me to pursue my artistry,” Mr Abu-Qutmah said. As part of the conditions of staying in Australia he is required to attend English language classes and is happy to do so. He plans to transform his sketches from paper onto video.

Mr Abu-Qutmah said he will pursue his passion for 3D animation work that will compliment his 10 years experience in the industry. Currently he is working on a fi lm about a young refugee seeking a better life in another country, drawing on his family’s own experiences.

Something to think about f you get sick and go off to a heath professional, they will hopefully diagnose you and get you the best treatment they know how to give you. But have you ever wondered who is telling them what treatment they should be giving? Well some other Aussies have. According to a disturbing new Australian study from Bond University, most members of US panels that defi ne conditions have fi nancial links to drug companies. The researchers raise questions about processes used for defi ning diseases and say about 75 per cent of members of US panels have declared confl icts of interest. That’s three in every four panel members openly have links with a company. Of those, the average panel member disclosed seven industry links. The top medical panels in the US have a massive influence on what happens in Australia and globally. The study, under the direction of Professor Paul Glasziou, is researching over-diagnosis. “Th is is where patients with mild symptoms or at low risk may be labelled as ill and receive treatments that may actually do them more harm than good,” he said. “There is a clear confl ict of interest,” says lead author Ray Moynihan, a senior research fellow at the university.

I

KEEPING FIT by David Stein

Getting rid of body fat fast

“If a panel of experts decides to expand the defi nition of a condition, then that is widening the market for the companies those experts are working with.” Th is is profitable to the companies. “We are talking about many common conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma or depression,” the report says. “One example is a 2003 panel that created a new diagnostic category called pre-hypertension. Or they lowered the ‘safe’ cholesterol numbers, so overnight, millions of people woke up with now ‘unsafe’ levels.” That instantly created a very large number of people who fitted into that category. A large proportion of members of the panel had extensive ties to companies that manufacture drugs for high blood pressure or lower cholesterol. Pharmaceuticals are a trillion dollar industry and can pretty much make up their own rules. The best way to keep out of their dealings is to stay as healthy as possible in the fi rst place! Eat real food, get quality sleep, be as positive as you can be mentally and move. Wouldn’t it be nicer talking to your doctor at the gym discussing exercise technique, than in their office going over your symptoms? Th ink about it!

A

very common question any trainer will get is ‘what’s the best way to burn fat?’ Some people still believe long bouts of low intensity exercise are best to whittle away extra body fat. But is it? A lot of research points to intensity being much more important than duration of the workout. Something like High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has been shown to burn much more body fat than traditional, slow cardio work. One of the earliest studies, done by researchers at Laval University, kept it basic, using two groups in a monthslong experiment. One group followed a 15-week program using HIIT while the other performed only steady-state cardio for 20 weeks. Interestingly the steady-state training subjects burned 15,000 calories more than their HIIT counterparts. But, those who followed the HIIT program, lost significantly more body fat. Nine times more! A 2001 study from East Tennessee State University demonstrated similar fi ndings with subjects who followed an eight-week HIIT program. Again, HIIT proved to be the better fat-burner. Subjects dropped two per cent body fat over the course of the experiment. Meanwhile, those who plodded through the eight weeks on a steadystate program lost no body fat.

Elisha is a registered nurse and midwife who has years of experience working in emergency departments, general wards and maternity wards

RY! T N E E E FR

The most recent study, out of Australia, reported that a group of females who followed a 20-minute HIIT program consisting of eight-second sprints followed by 12 seconds of rest lost an amazing six times more body fat than a group that followed a 40-minute cardio program performed at a constant intensity of 60 per cent MHR. So your workouts can actually be shorter but get more results. And another bonus to all this is discovering that shorter exercise sessions will allow you to hold on to more muscle. The last thing you want to do on your journey to a toned, shapely body with less fat is lose your muscle mass. Endurance training can rob muscles of size and shape. Short hard bursts, on the other hand, will help you preserve your hard-earned muscle mass. To illustrate the point, think about the size of a marathon runner’s legs compared to a sprinter’s legs. The sprinter, whose entire training schedule revolves around HIIT, can possess significantly more muscular thighs. Next week we’ll talk about how to bring some HIIT training into your routine.

40 UNFORGETTABLE YEARS OF RICHARD CLAPTON W

ell known Australian rock artist Richard Clapton will celebrate 40 successful years in the music industry with a show at Sydney’s State Theatre. The event will be a night of his greatest hits and memories from a jam-packed career, sure to leave fans singing and dancing along with this beloved icon. Growing up with cultural inspiration from the Rolling Stones, Richard was inspired to pick up that electric guitar and create the music he loved. He boarded a ship to London at the height of the 60’s, experimented with different bands and created that style that his fans all love. He returned to release his first album, ‘Prussian Blue’, in 1973 and hit number 2 on the national charts with the single ‘Girls On The Avenue’ in 1975, which thrust Richard into the musical spotlight. The following four decades saw Richard create 13 studio albums including 1977’s ‘Goodbye Tiger’, 1982’s ‘The Great Escape’ and his latest, 2012’s ‘Harlequin Nights’. He has produced an album for the famous Australian band INXS and also wrote and worked on songs with the band’s members and Cold Chisel. He toured with the Party Boys in 1983 before returning to his solo career, and was inducted into the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 1999. To celebrate such an extensive career, fans can expect to hear classics like ‘The Best Years Of Our Lives’, ‘Glory Road’,

‘Goodbye Tiger’, ‘Down In The Lucky Country’, ‘Girls On The Avenue’ and many more. Richard provides one of the greatest

experiences with his songs that define a generation. Come see the Richard Clapton phenomenon live at the State Theatre on

CHATTER ON THE BOX WITH NATHAN TAYLOR A

n interesting week of television chatter kicked off with the news that popular Foxtel channels TV1 and SF (Sci Fi) will end in December. The channels will close on December 31 after CBS Studios International, Sony Pictures Television International and NBC Universal weren’t able to negotiate a satisfactory carriage deal with Foxtel. The closure of the two channels will impact 35 fulltime staff. TV1 launched way back in 1995 while Sci Fi launched in 2006 before rebranding to SF not long ago. It’s understood TV1 may still have life yet via IPTV, Crackle and Apple TV. Here’s some amazing news for all the ‘Big Brother’ fans out there with the announcement that ‘Late Night Feast’, a weekly show exploring a more grown-up side to the housemates, will air every

Tuesday night at 9.30pm. A show like this has been demanded by hardcore fans including myself ever since Nine relaunched the series last year, with Big Brother finally listening. ‘Late Night Feast’ begins this Tuesday, August 27. I’m not sure what to make of this one but Channel Nine has announced that a children’s version of ‘The Voice’ called ‘The Voice Kids’ will air next year. The new series will showcase talented kids aged eight to 14 and is likely to feature a new host plus a new set of judges. Nine still plans to air an ‘adult’ version of ‘The Voice’ although this will most likely get pushed back to the second half of 2014. Audition details are at www.thevoice.com.au. Speaking of auditions, ‘Masterchef Australia’ is calling out for contestants for

next year’s series. You must be available for approximately 30 weeks of the year between November and July. Applications close on September 29. Visit www. masterchef.com.au. ‘Glee’ creator Ryan Murphy has revealed Corey Monteith’s character, Finn Hudson, will not die in the show, the same way Monteith did last month by an accidental drug overdose. Murphy said producers did entertain the idea of the character dying the same way as Monteith but changed their minds. Instead it’s now likely Finn will die in secret, with no one knowing what actually killed him. Oprah Winfrey could be back in Australia before you know it, according to The Daily Telegraph. It’s understood she’s in talks with Qantas to return to Australia

for a series of shows in its hangers… interesting concept. After some initial doubts over the impact of her last visit, it’s been revealed that 73 per cent of US travelers booked their trip Down Under this year because they were influenced by the ‘Big O’. Tennis fans rejoice! FOX Sports has announced it’s signed a four year deal to broadcast the US Open exclusively in Australia. This is the first time in Australian tennis history that the broadcaster has had sole rights to a Grand Slam event. This year’s tournament gets underway at 1am this Tuesday, August 27 with the premiere of ‘Tennis Today’, a daily 30-minute review show with Wally Masur and Adam Peacock. The US Open will air on FOX Sports 3 with more than 170 hours of live coverage. Now let’s hope the Aussies win!

It’s a visual exploration of perception and night’s symbolism as a time of ambiguity and potentiality. The exhibition starts on Tuesday, August 27 from 10am at the Salerno Gallery. For details visit www.salernogallery.com.

BASIL NAIMET

ennis legend Ken Rosewall was honoured last Saturday by Marrickville Tennis Club as part of their 90th birthday celebrations. Former doubles champion Sandon Stolle was also honoured. Picture perfect skies greeted those in attendance including Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese, who did the honour of presenting the two former champions with placards that displayed their names. Ken Rosewall with his long and distinguished career won a string of Open titles including Australian, US and French and played into his 40’s, had court one named after him. Sandon Stolle, the winner of the 1998 US Open and runner-up in the doubles at Wimbledon in 2000 had court two named after him. Club President Greg Gibson said they

wanted to celebrate the special occasion with something memorable. “We wanted to recognise the players whom we admire and have motivated us over the years by naming the courts in their honour,” he said. But the occasion was also to celebrate the contribution their members had made over the many years the club has been running. “We want to thank many of the people and groups who have supported us over the years, including our landlords Marrickville Council, who were represented by Councillor Chris Woods.” Mr Gibson said the uniqueness of the club was its grass surface and he encouraged people of all levels to give the club a try. “Grass offers challenges you don’t get on a hard-court because grass is a living, growing surface that plays differently depending on the conditions,” he said, adding that all players will be made welcome at the club.

he Newtown Jets lost 38-10 to the Newcastle Knights at Harker Oval on Saturday. The fi rst half was a disaster for the Jets with handling errors in their own half costing them two tries. Poor defence also cost the team, which allowed the Hunter team to go into the half time break with a 22-0 lead. The Jets came out fi red up at the start of the second half and scored in the 48th minute with some good lead up work from fullback Henare Wells who sent winger Adam Henry over for a try. Newtown went desperately close to scoring on two other occasions that might have brought the Jets back into the game. But the afternoon just didn’t belong to the Jets as nothing came of their play. Ryan Verlinden was penalised for a double movement. Shortly after Khalid Deeb’s try was disallowed because of an infringement in the ruck. For the Knights however, their attacking play seemed to pay dividends. Victory was reassured for them when they scored from an orthodox backline movement. They added another try from a Jets corner kick that went wrong resulting in the home side running away with a 95 metre try. The Knights then rubbed salt into the wounds scoring in the fi nal minute of play.

The win puts the Knights into second place. The Jets remain in fourth place but must win both of their remaining games to ward off challenges from Windsor and the Auckland Vulcans.

Tomorrow sees another double-header at Henson Park with competition leaders Cronulla Sharks taking on Manly-Warringah at 1pm, while Newtown has a danger game against Wyong at 3pm.
