T

he man driving the car that hit Emma de Silva in St Peters two years ago has avoided jail time over the incident. 27-year-old Bryce James Wayland was this week ordered to perform 50 hours of community service and had a 15-month driving ban slapped on him. Ms De Silva has been left with long term disabilities after she was hit by the car whilst walking on a footpath with her 19-day-old daughter on the Pacific Highway in March 2011.

Mr Wayland was found guilty last year of negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm, but a magistrate this week said his culpability was “very low”. Mr Wayland had told police that he mounted the kerb when his accelarator pedal became caught under a floor-mat and jammed. Community outrage has followed the sentence given the long-term impact the accident has on Ms de Silva, who now lives with her father and a carer in Penrith. She has gone from being a perfectly healthy woman in her 30’s to struggling with basic life skills such as speaking and talking.

Appearing on Nine News this week, Ms de Silva admitted that she “wished she was dead”. “I’ve suffered a lot for his mistakes,” she said. “I had to learn how to walk and talk again. I had to learn how to eat properly. All because he hit me.” Mr Wayland could have been sent to jail for nine months, but the magistrate said that was not warranted. “I feel sad that he hit me but I feel sorry for him,” Ms de Silva told Nine. “He couldn’t control the car.” Ms de Silva has a dream to live independently and have more children.

Dead woman walking: Leadership questions will not disappear

pinion polls are frequent and in an election year can’t and shouldn’t, be ignored. When the numbers are less than desirable you’re guaranteed to hear one of the following lines: “I don’t comment on polls.” “I’m not going to give a running commentary on the polls.” “Polls go up and down.” With the latest Nielson Poll this week showing Labor has slumped back to a 30 per cent primary vote and Julia Gillard is even more seriously unpopular – Ministers could no longer get away with the pro forma lines. Simon Crean was right when he said this one is a “wake up call”. Craig Emerson equally so when he pointed out the government has spent “too much time talking about ourselves”. With just seven months to the election, at this point Labor is going to need one helluva circuit breaker. Christine Milne’s public break up from the Labor/Greens marriage-ofconvenience won’t do it. It might actually add to the air of uncertainty. Whilst MPs are weighing up options to shift momentum, Kevin Rudd is not the clear, shiny, obvious answer. Kevin Rudd wants the party to come to him, begging and on their knees. At the moment they won’t – many MPs

are perhaps resigned to the fact that Julia Gillard is a dead-woman-walking, but how to get the Labor Party off death row is another complicated saga altogether. If the party goes back to Kevin Rudd, the colleagues that called him a “psychopath” and spelt out just how bad his leadership was will have to go too – namely Wayne Swan, Stephen Conroy and Peter Garret. Even so, Kevin Rudd is not a miracle worker – despite the healthy respect he has for himself. Yes, he’s still popular in the electorate, he can maybe save seats, but not the party. In the end politics is a numbers game. As one Labor insider said “it’s all about arithmetic – look for any MP with a margin of less than 10 per cent”. The source suggested self preservation instincts will kick in for marginal seat holders whose prospects are looking dismal. If they think Mr Rudd can save their seats – they’ll jump. With a primary vote at 30 per cent, 26 Labor MPs would lose their seats. It’s thought that Mr Rudd only needs about 10-15 votes in caucus. The truth is, not even the people that have the power to dump Gillard and reinstall Rudd know what’s going to happen. Speculation is reaching hysteria – every word, every tweet, every movement

reens Councillors are calling for more action from Marrickville Mayor, Victor Macri to pursuade the State Government to establish a WestConnex motorway taskforce. A report to Council on Tuesday showed that very little has been to done to establish a taskforce since it was originally called for back in October by a collective of inner west mayors, according to Greens Cr David Leary. “Th is was a way of hiding the fact they have no clear policy on how to react to this motorway, Cr Leary said. “Last October, Marrickville Mayor Macri and Leichhardt Labor Mayor Darcy Byrne put forward identically worded mayoral minutes to each council calling for the establishment of a WestConnex taskforce. “Instead of adopting the tough stance of opposing WestConnex proposed by the Greens, both Mayors with the support of their Labor-Liberal alliances on Council pushed for the ‘do nothing’ option of creating a WestConnex taskforce. Roads Minister Duncan Gay signalled his intention via a letter to Council to hold a round table forum, which according to Cr Leary, vindicates the Greens’ argument that the taskforce was a case of “do-nothing politics. Cr Macri rejected those claims and said the taskforce would not go ahead because Cr Leary had dissolved the need for it

Govt plans to amalgamate local police stations

Incidents linked: Spate of bag thefts in CBD A pair of bag snatchers hit Sydney streets on Sunday night including at Ultimo and Pyrmont before being stopped by police at St Peters. About 11.45pm Sunday, three men, aged 26, 27, and 28, were walking to their car on Mary Ann Street, Ultimo, when they were confronted by two males. The two males allegedly punched the 26 and the 27-year-old, while the third man fled to Harris Street. He was later confronted by the two men who allegedly stole his bag from him. A short time later, a 31-yearold woman was walking in Ada Place Pyrmont when she was approached by three males. They demanded she hand them her bag, which she did. They then allegedly ran toward another woman walking in the same street and grabbed her bag from her before fleeing the area in a grey BMW. A short time later, police patrolling Newtown saw the BMW and began a pursuit. The car stopped on the corner of May Street and the Princes Highway, St Peters, where four males fled on foot. Detectives are investigating the bag snatches and initial inquiries suggest the incidents may be linked. Anyone who witnessed the bag snatches or subsequent events is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

arrickville Local Area Command would be amalgamated with Ashfield Police under reforms proposed by Police Minister Michael Gallacher on January 31. The plans were fi rst revealed in the media when the information was leaked to the press earlier in January. Police Association of NSW President Scott Weber said police and community members needed to be involved in “full and frank consultation in the lead up to the changes, but described the plans as an opportunity for the government to improve the police to population ratios in NSW, “which is currently Australia’s worst. “Our communities need to know that their calls for assistance will be answered in a timely manner – anything that changes that will not be tolerated by police or the community, Mr Weber said. “We need to see more police out on our streets protecting the community. If the government thinks that this is the way to do it, that’s fi ne – but any model needs to be properly researched and planned with significant input from senior, experienced police officers. Mr Weber said the Police Association of NSW had been assured there would be no reduction in authorised strength so that more police will be returned to front line policing and that the government also guaranteed there would be no closures of police stations or an overall reduction to the police budget. “Dramatically cutting the number of Local Area Commands in the Sydney area needs to be backed by sound evidence that outlines the benefit to community safety, Mr Weber said. “We’ll be keeping a very close eye on the impact it

ough new measures announced this week to strengthen Coal Seam Gas regulation in NSW have prompted Marrickville Greens Councillor, David Leary, to call on the State Government to formally revoke a gas exploration licence at St Peters. On Tuesday the State Government banned coal seam gas mining within two kilometres of residential areas. “If the ban on mining within two kilometres of residential areas announced today is fair dinkum then the State Government should immediately move to revoke the St Peters licence,” Cr Leary said. “There is no reason why the licence issued to Dart Energy should remain in force.” Cr Leary said in May 2011, Dart Energy announced it would start drilling at St Peters later that year, but after a community campaign against the proposal, the company put its plans to drill at St Peters on hold. He said despite Dart Energy’s announcement, locals were still concerned that the licence issued to Dart Energy remained in place. “The long, hard fought campaign by the Greens and local activists has paid dividends with the O’Farrell Government backing down on plans for coal seam gas in suburban areas. To make that back down complete the St Peters licence should also now be revoked.” Questions from the Weekender to Premier Barry O’Farrell were referred to

Resources Minister Christopher Hartcher, who accused Cr Leary of failing to do “the most basic research” before making his demands. “If Councillor Leary had bothered to do even the most basic of research, he would know that Dart Energy announced to the ASX in May 2012 that the company will not drill at St Peters,” Mr Hartcher said. “Where were the Greens when the licence was granted by the former Labor Government in 2008 with no community consultation? Where were the Greens when the Keneally government gave the go-ahead for exploratory drilling in March 2010, again, with no community consultation?” Minister Hartcher said the new controls on coal seam gas mining will see a two kilometre exclusion zone imposed around residential zones and offered St Peters residents the best protection yet against CSG mining in their neighbourhood. “The environment, our water resources, agricultural land and residential areas have never been more protected from the potential impacts of CSG activity than they are now,” he said. On Tuesday, Premier O’Farrell said the new measures were built on what are “already the toughest controls in the country” against CSG in residential areas. He said the exclusion zones will ensure there is no repeat of the former Labor Government’s granting of exploration licences over residential zones. The exclusion zones will apply to any CSG activity not yet been approved under the EP&A Actt.

New vaccination program rolled out to school boys to prevent HPV illnesses oys at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts were vaccinated against human pipillomavirus (HPV) under the guise of Federal Health Minister, Tanya Plibersek, last Friday. Ms Plibersek watched as nurses from the public health unit of the Sydney and South Western Sydney local health districts administered vaccines to school boys, who have begun receiving the fi rst of three vaccinations to protect them against cancers and diseases caused by HPV. Ms Plibersek said more than 280,000 boys will be eligible for the free Gardasil vaccine this year, which is estimated to prevent a quarter of new HPV infections. “We’re confident that extending the program to males will reduce HPV-related cancers and disease in the future,” Ms Plibersek said. “The HPV vaccine is the best protection against the HPV virus; a virus that infects

B

four out of five sexually active people at some point in their lives and is linked to cancer and other disease. “Because of our work in this area, Australia’s HPV vaccine coverage rates are among the best in the world, resulting in a significant drop in HPV-related infections.” Ms Plibersek said since the HPV vaccination program started in 2007 there has been a reduction in HPV-related infections in young women and a reduced incidence of genital warts in males and females. The vaccinations will be delivered by qualified immunisation providers in all states and territories after parental consent. The NSW Government has committed $3.6 million to run the HPV vaccine program for boys in its fi rst two years. The Federal Government will supply the vaccine and manage the vaccine register.

Marrickville Council has launched a new initiative that bridges the generational and technological gap between local youth and seniors. The Cyber Seniors program pairs local seniors wanting to learn computer and digital skills with local students willing to share their technological expertise. Some of the skills students will be teaching seniors include using and setting up an email account, using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter as well as search sites such as Google. Council has partnered with Marrickville High School to run the six week course as an after school hours program. Students participating in the program would provide one-on-one tuition to seniors and in return be rewarded with credits for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Marrickville Mayor Victor Macri said the program will help seniors learn a range of important internet and computer skills while connecting with local young people. “We’re living in an exciting and ever evolving digital age which allows us to have access to information like never before, and most importantly stay connected with family and friends no matter where they are,” Cr Macri said. “Unfortunately seniors can often be reluctant to use computers, let alone take a computer class so they miss out on so many of these benefits. “You’re never too old to learn and the Cyber Seniors Program will give seniors an opportunity to connect with young people on a one-to-one level while learning valuable skills they can use in their day to day life.” For more information on the Cyber Seniors Program, visit Council’s website www. marrickville.nsw.gov.au or phone Marrickville Library on 9335 2173.

Ushering in year of the snake Local celebrations were held last weekend to mark the Lunar New Year alvert Street car park was the scene of colourful Lunar New Year celebrations on Saturday, as a traditional Chinese dragon blessed the precinct for prosperity and ushered in the Year of the Snake. The Illawarra Road car park came to life with a street parade featuring dragons, dancing lions, a ‘God of Wealth’ handing out good fortune red envelopes, fan dancers and a Chinese opera demonstration. A Marrickville Council spokesperson said crowds numbered more than several hundred throughout the day and about 100 performers participated in the Chinese New Year event. Marrickville Mayor, Victor Macri, joined Marrickville Chamber of Commerce president Cr Morris Hanna on the day to ‘open the eyes’ of the dragon – a ceremony where dots are painted to resemble pupils. “It’s a great honour for Marrickville Council to celebrate key holidays with its diverse community,” Cr Macri said. The dragon then wound its way around Illawarra and Marrickville Roads to wish local businesses good fortune. There are many other Chinese New Year celebrations happening around Sydney in February. www.innercityweekender.com.au [ADVERTORIAL] brand new kids’ dance and fitness program has hit the Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre with trainer Kea Phang set to offer fun techniques to achieve better health. “Kea is a fantastic instructor, a pocket rocket superstar,” said Wellness Centre manager Morgan Heida. “Kea’s had over 15 years of experience as a dance teacher and performer, holding formal qualifications in both jazz and contemporary disciplines. She’s great with the kids and teaches various skills such as coordination, balance and group choreography. Some of the styles taught include ballet, jazz and dance fundamentals. “Expect lots of giggling and wiggling with a fun soundtrack to match!” With two 45-minute classes of Kinder (3 to 5-years-old) and Junior (6 to 9-years-old), the sessions are also a great way for kids to “meet new friends, get confident, learn new skills while building stronger bodies”. Kinder classes take place each Tuesday from 3.45pm and Junior classes from 4.30pm, commencing from February 26. Parents of older kids can register their interest at the Centre. “The price is very, very competitive and we don’t lock you in to terms. It’s just a casual drop in rate at $8.60 per class.” As well as an opportunity for kids to expand their social networks, Ms Heida said the classes are a great opportunity for mums to have some time to themselves and hit the centre’s pools, gym, fitness and aqua classes or the café with friends. “Parents or guardians can have a cup of tea, a lap of the pool, attend a class or workout at the gym while they wait,” Ms Heida said. “As a mum, you can go in and burn some calories while the kids have a ball.” Ample parking and full baby changing facilities are available on site. The draft Marrickville Town Centre Parking Strategy can be viewed at: • Council’s Customer Service Centre, 2-14 Fisher Street, Petersham • Marrickville, Stanmore, Dulwich Hill and St Peters Libraries • Council’s website at www.marrickville.nsw.gov.au Submissions can be made: By fax to 9335 2029 By email to council@marrickville.nsw.gov.au Online at www.marrickville.nsw.gov.au/ marrickvilletowncentreparkingstrategy

The next few weeks are likely to be a highly vulnerable time for you and you need to be careful of being your own worst enemy. You will be feeling highly sensitive especially at work and will need to be careful of confusion, deceit and uncertainty. Don’t buy into gossip and don’t allow your emotions to control you. Before you jump to conclusions be certain that you have your facts right and act in a positive way rather than just reacting.

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Misunderstandings are likely in relationships over the next three weeks, if they are not handled with diplomacy break-ups are likely. By considering your lover’s thoughts and ideas you can sidestep most issues. Children are likely to be a cause of concern, perhaps one of your offspring is being bullied by an older child at school or elsewhere and needs your help to become more assertive.

When it comes to family and property matters there will be a good deal of confusion and muddle. It’s important to bear this in mind, particularly if you’re buying a home or renovating. Make sure that you aren’t totally ruled by your heart or you could make a major mistake. Listen to your common sense as you are certainly going to need it. Your mother or an older female family member may be the source of concern, but don’t over-react.

CANCER

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

The Inner City Weekender

The planets suggest that you’ll only damage your own prospects if you insist on sticking in a rut or with one train of thought. You must escape from the mental restrictions you have built around yourself. Among them are the bouts of jealousy or envy which eat you up inside, many of which are based on certain people who would like nothing more than to turn you against someone they want to get at.

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Destiny or fate, whatever you like to call it, seems to have been sufficiently unkind lately, leaving you wondering if you are the target of a campaign of dirty tricks. But set aside such worries or suspicions as that imagination of yours is running away with you. However, since events will soon weave themselves into something remarkable, all you basically need is some of that splendid patience and determination.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Problems and difficulties are likely regarding certain friendships as some of the people in your life are going to be grumpy, stressed out and self-absorbed. However, it is not up to you to resolve other people’s problems, therefore don’t allow yourself to become overly involved. It may be necessary for you to step back and give them the space to resolve their own dilemmas.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

There could be some almighty blunders on the work front and it will certainly pay to double check everything you are working on so that if this should occur it will be the fault of other people rather than yourself. In fact certain workmates, contacts and colleagues could be disgruntled and uncooperative and because of this the only way to fly is solo. You also need to be careful of making a rod for your own back by overloading your schedule.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Delays and hold-ups are likely with travel plans, the car may run out of petrol or breakdown at the most inconvenient time. The public transport you depend upon may suddenly disappear off the face of the earth and that fl ight you have booked may be held up indefi nitely. To avoid confusion or frustration be certain to double check all arrangements. Also patience is going to be a dirty word, but be careful of turning into a dictator.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Complications are likely re: joint fi nances, loans, legal issues, insurance claims, payments and other partnership arrangements. However, you need to avoid getting into wrangles with bureaucrats, officials and other people, no matter how strong your desire is to put them in their place, as this will only make a difficult situation worse. You also need to be careful of breaking any laws as the police will have you fi rmly in their sights!

|

During the next fortnight you are going to have to put some serious thought into your fi nances. You need to be prepared for unexpected expenses. Also it is important to double check all fi nancial statements, invoices and credit card statements as hidden charges are likely. It is important that you have a straight conversation with your partner involving your possessions and earnings, this may be difficult but it will also free you from confusion.

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

Your home and family may begin to resemble a nest of ego maniacs and it will be necessary for you to take a cold but practical approach to certain decisions. Th is will mean confronting faults and difficult truths in yourself as well as others, which may bring you some moments of anxiety but, believe it or not, you will ultimately see your confidence flourishing. If you are out and about try not to over indulge in alcohol, especially if you are driving! 125ICD2792

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

You have to admit Pisces, you are not always the easiest person to deal with and right now you are determined to impose your ideas and thoughts on other people, creating a stir both at home and at work, resulting in you being told that you are stubborn, short-sighted and making trouble. Perhaps there could be some truth in what is being said, so be certain to look at the way you are dealing with other people and try not to over-react.

The importance of bacteria ome people are not sure just how incredibly important a role bacteria plays in our bodies. If your gut bacteria are not functioning well then it’s a sure bet you will be sick and then also suffer long term effects from things like poor digestion of nutrients, allergies and auto immune disease. An article on some research from the University of Adelaide published this week in The Australian is just one example of the many ways we are affected. It stated, “People can brush their teeth as much as they like, but our mouths will never be as healthy as those of our ancient ancestors. That statement comes down to the fact that with so much processed food around, there’s a decreased amount of good bacteria in the human mouth. That results in all sorts of problems including tooth decay and gum disease. Th is week, Professor Alan Cooper, director of the University of Adelaide Centre for Ancient DNA, said the human mouth is in “a permanent state of disease. A team led by Prof Cooper’s centre has published research in the journal Nature Genetics. They studied teeth from prehistoric northern European human skeletons and found oral bacteria in modern man are much less diverse than historic populations.

S

KEEPING FIT by David Stein

Pace yourself when it comes to exercise

The research found that even things like obesity, autism and diabetes can be linked to the loss of diversity in bacteria. So what can you do? It’s pretty simple, really. You need to eat the right foods. Processed sugars need to be out, and so do carbohydrates. Organic, locally produced fresh foods are the answer and they are much easier to fi nd than you might think. In addition, as the professor himself said, kids need to get out and get dirty! Let them play! Hiding kids away from playing in the dirt or outside is creating a major problem, as is the over-use of antibiotics. And you know that mouthwash that you think is doing you so good? Well the article this week said, and it’s right, that it might be doing you more harm than good by removing the diversity that can suppress disease-causing bacteria. Bacteria is so vitally important. Do your research.

T

hanks for the emails on last week’s column, it’s sad but true people are getting sick and unwell because their nutrition knowledge is based on misleading or just blatantly wrong advertising. Or based on ‘experts’ in the media regurgitating the same old ‘low fat, eat lots of carbs or this new processed food’ and any of the other wonderful advice that has got us to the fi rst time in human history where the leading causes of death are self infl icted! Th is week I was asked about staying motivated. Someone started an all out fitness kick and trained twice a day for a week but by the second week are doing less than they ever have! I think it’s important to be realistic about your goals and commitments. It’s been said for many years ‘the best way to get someone to do something is make them want to do it’. The same is true for your fitness program. I’ve seen people force themselves onto a treadmill at 6am in the morning then say I just don’t like exercise. What they don’t like is looking at the treadmill clock ticking down running on the spot for an hour. Organise a game of tennis, buy a mountain bike. Try out paddling at the Regatta Centre. There are a hundred ways to get active. The other important thing is progress

Are you over 65 years old? Have you lost weight recently?

slowly. At fi rst your new resolve to get fit is fragile, even though you’re feeling positive this time you’re going to do it! It has no habit behind it, you might have bad associations to exercise already, you may have already failed before and maybe others around you are not very encouraging. You’re getting sore from doing too much; it’s very easy to lose that initial resolve. You have to be very careful to keep it alive then get it growing. Compare it to making a campfi re. You don’t light a match then put a few telegraph poles on top of it. Then say ‘see, I can’t make campfi res’. You have to feed it appropriately, small easy burning things that get the flame even bigger. Only when it’s ready you put a bit more on. Same for exercise: guide yourself by how you feel, better to do something you like and increase it when you feel ready. It’s a long term enjoyable change.

WEEKLY WINE by David Ellis

Best with prostitute’s spaghetti

W

e see little Aglianico here in Australia, a wine that’s big in the south of Italy where it was introduced from Greece some several millennia ago. For whatever reason it’s never really caught on either elsewhere in Italy nor in many other parts of the world, but the dozen or so Australian makers who have planted and are refining it here are doing so with quite some success, and winning fans for this full-flavoured variety. One such is Bill Calabria at Griffith in the NSW Riverina who sports good Italian lineage, and has recently released a 2010 Calabria Aglianico that’s a delightfully more-ish drop bright cherry in colour and with ripe plum fruit and black cherry aromas, and savoury coffee and smoky notes on the palate. At just $14.99 it’s rewardingly classy and elegant to enjoy with richer, light-meat dishes such as roast duck or pork belly – or as in its homeland, with Spaghetti alla Puttanesca, the so-called “Prostitute’s Spaghetti” whose flavoursome sauce is made with garlic, olive oil, tomatoes, anchovies, capers and dill, and which the “girls” of Naples could easy whip up between clients. One to note: Katnook Estate’s 2010 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine

that’s richly reflective of the great 2010 vintage, one that’s often described as being amongst the region’s best-ever, with near-ideal weather conditions that included below average rainfall and above average temperatures. The beautifully intense blackberry and mulberry aromas, generous purefruit flavours, finely grained tannins and underlying mocha notes, make it a great buy at $40 – in fact Langton’s Wine Auction have described it as “an outstanding Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon with excellent fruit definition and tannin maturity”. Enjoy it with slow-baked beef ribs accompanied by a peppercorn or fresh mushroom sauce.

f you like your rock music hard with a sharp, comic edge then brace yourself as Tenacious D is set to visit our shores in May. The musical duo, formed in 1991, is made up of Hollywood success story Jack Black, famous for his roles in comedy films ‘Shallow Hal’ and ‘School of Rock’, and vocalist Kyle Gass. Although the pair have previously toured down under, this will be their first visit to Australia or New Zealand since 2011 when they were the support act for the Foo Fighters. They released their third album, ‘Rize of the Fenix’, last year, which was warmly received by critics and became the highest-selling comedy album in the

United States. It was even nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. The album showcases the mix of humour and energetic hard-rock that Tenacious D is famous for while also drawing upon diverse musical influences such as folk and progressive rock. They will be joined in Australia by special guest Barry Morgan, who plays an organ salesman in a show that uses hilarity and music to delight audiences. Tenacious D will perform at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday, May 11 at 9pm. Tickets go on sale on Monday, February 25 at 9am. For bookings or more information, call 9250 7777 or visit www. frontiertouring.com/tenaciousd.

CHATTER ON THE BOX WITH NATHAN TAYLOR I

s one of the biggest shows of the past decade, ‘Australian Idol’, about to get a revival? Well it’s quite possible according to recent reports. ‘Idol’ was a ratings juggernaut for Channel Ten when it aired between 2003 and 2009. It produced some of Australia’s biggest music stars including Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Damien Leith, Matt Corby, Jessica Mauboy and Ricki-Lee Coulter, to name a few. But if it does come back, a few things need to happen to make it worthwhile. First, a new set of judges is a given but let’s mix it up by introducing both an Australian and international panel, like ‘The Voice’. Secondly, a likeable host is also crucial. I have nothing against Andrew G but let’s look for someone different, unlike the usual roulette of hosts that get passed around. And lastly, ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, ‘The Voice’ and ‘The X-Factor’ will need to

disappear otherwise it will have no hope. An overload of talent shows on small market Australian TV isn’t a good thing because the talent thins out, and we’ll end up seeing the same contestants on every show. Here’s a blast from the past. What do you get when you combine ‘Cheers’ with ‘Seinfeld’ – a brand new US sitcom that’s what. ‘Kirstie’s New Show’, yes that’s the title, stars Kirstie Alley and Rhea Perlman (‘Cheers’), and Michael Richards aka Kramer from ‘Seinfeld’.Alley will play Madison Banks, a Broadway star who finds her life turned upside down when her son turns up looking to reconnect with his biological mother. Richards will play Maddie’s limo driver, while Perlman plays her assistant/best friend. While the show stars some TV comedy legends, the

premise sounds weird, and I can’t image Michael Richards playing anybody but Kramer. There’s no word yet on an air date. Geeks and babes of Penrith, ‘Beauty & The Geek’ is back for 2013 and producers are on the hunt for a new cast. If you are single and between 18 – 30, this could be the break for you. Visit www.beauty5. castasugar.com by Sunday, March 3 to apply. Some shows in the US got a wellearned renewal last week. ‘Supernatural’ will be back for a ninth series, ‘The Vampire Diaries’ will return for a fifth series, and the soon-to-air ‘Arrow’ has been awarded a second season. The 288th season of ‘The Amazing Race’, okay I joke but by golly there’s been

a lot, will air on 7mate this Sunday, February 24 at 6.30pm. Teams this season include a pair of country singers, two YouTube hosts, pro hockey-player brothers, firefighters, roller-derby mothers, twin brothers who work together as physicians and a couple who were married only four weeks before the race started. Sounds promising, don’t miss it! Lastly, the ‘2013 Academy Awards’ airs this Monday, February 25 on Channel Nine. Hosted by ‘Family Guy’ creator Seth MacFarlane, the Academy Awards are set to be one of the most highly anticipated in years with three Aussies including Hugh Jackman, Jackie Weaver and Naomi Watts up for statues. Catch all the action from the red carpet and awards ceremony live from 12.30pm, followed by a full replay that night at 9.30pm.

All climates, all conditions New tyre is at the next level when it comes to high performance and grip umho Tyres has launched its next generation ultra-high performance (UHP) tyre in Australia with the arrival of the internationally acclaimed and class leading Ecsta 4X KU22. The KU22 has already received a 2012 Good Design Award, acknowledged as one of the most prestigious industrial design accolades in the world, and is the only UHP tyre to have won such an award in the transportation category. According to national marketing and training manager at Kumho Tyres Australia, David Basha, the Ecsta 4X KU22 is Kumho’s most advanced and versatile ultra-high performance tyre ever. “The Good Design Award underlines Kumho’s commitment and dedication to research and development and is an example of the technological advancement Kumho has achieved with its tyres,” Mr Basha said. “Ecsta 4X KU22 has been designed for all climate conditions from hot and dry to pouring rain. It has been developed with the motorist in mind and delivers a quiet and smooth ride around town and on the highway as well.” A new high grip resin has been used to bond the nano-sized silica in the tyre construction to ensure the KU22 maintains good grip with the road. The nano sized silica particles contribute to tyre life and by reducing small gaps in the tread provide a greater surface area for better contact with the road as well as heightened grip levels and more effective water dispersion.

Jets versus Tigers showdown set to be a precursor to Foundation Cup clash he Newtown Jets will play their second trial match for the 2013 season when they take on Wests Tigers at Allianz Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Th is match will be an early curtainraiser to the Sydney Roosters versus Wests Tigers annual Foundation Cup clash. Jets head coach, Greg Matterson, says that the Newtown squad has trained well throughout the arduous pre-season and turned on an impressive display against a very strong Canterbury-Bankstown team in a recent trial match at Belmore Sportsground. As in all pre-season trials, a number of players are contesting positions for the 2013 Newtown Jets squad, meaning spectators should be set for another great display of athleticism and talent with the ball. Matterson added that 2013 will be an extra tough season for the Jets, noting that, “as the reigning VB NSW Cup premiers, our boys will all have targets on their foreheads”. “Every team will lift against us and this season will be a great challenge for our blokes. Wests Tigers are in effect newcomers to the VB NSW Cup ranks, as the joint venture previously competed as separate teams, the two foundation clubs Balmain and Western Suburbs, in the flagship NSW Rugby League competition. The Newtown Jets versus Wests Tigers trial match gets underway at Allianz Stadium on Saturday, February 23 at 3pm. Tickets available through Ticketek.

ormer Socceroo and ex AC Milan star, Zeljko Kalac, visited young players from Red Devils Football Academy teams on Saturday to hand them their 2013 soccer gear. Kalac, now the Sydney FC goalkeeping coach, handed out the new gear to all of the academy’s teams at Marrickville High School. “It was great to get out there and see the aspiring, young footballers do their stuff,” Kalac said. “It was a really nice environment to be a part of. There were a few Sydney FC supporters, so it was good to come out before the match against Adelaide, which we won in the afternoon.” It’s not the fi rst time the football star has visited the academy’s players. Earlier on February 7, Kalac visited Red Devils players during a trials evening to show them some of his hard-earned football skills. “I’m really big on technique,” Kalac said. “Hopefully they’ll keep working at it and as they get older, they’ll keep getting better.” Red Devils Football Academy director Ben Burrows said the teams were very excited Zeljko had taken an interest in them.
