ith the money earned from his magazine and advent calendar sales over the coming Christmas season, Newtown Station Big Issue vendor, Alan hopes to buy a new battery for his motorised mobility chair, which he rides from Waterloo to Newtown and back each day. It’s an expense of almost $800 for the Waterloo pensioner, a price he simply can’t afford without the money he earns selling the magazine for more than three hours each weekday. “I’m a new kid on the block, I’ve only been selling here since they put the new station in,” Alan said. He said he started selling the magazine after he spotted other vendors on his way to appointments at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. “I suffer from chronic depression. In another lifetime, I had a business and everything but because I had a knee and back operation, which left me with chronic pain, it has left me with chronic depression,” Alan said. “Now I live to celebrate the things I can do and accept the things I can’t do, whereas before, I was just figuring out how to top myself.” Alan said he enjoys being his own boss and spoke highly of the King Street crowd of colourful passers-by. He said he’d “never seen so many women with tattoos” before he came to Newtown and mentioned a man who regularly buys his magazine before praying for his health. “He asks, ‘do you mind if I pray for you?’ and he puts his hands on me and says a little prayer for me, because he knows I’m in pain.” Alan invites others to come and say hello too. “I enjoy Newtown because it’s just a vibrant place. Interesting people go by here, they’re very friendly, they always smile at me,” he said. “Don’t just stay in your bedroom and watch TV and play with your cat every day, like I did, because that’s sort of soul destroying. You’ve got to make an effort to do something.” Support is available for anyone who may be distressed by calling Lifeline 131 114, Mensline 1300 789 978 or Kids Helpline 1800 551 800.

The State Government’s education budget cuts are not popular and this week Opposition Leader John Robertson visited a local school to gain support for his campaign to reverse the Government’s decision. Parents and teachers are concerned that the funding cuts, to the tune of $1.7 billion will have an effect locally.
