on’t be fooled – the man in this picture is no criminal. It’s John Pearce, the parish priest at St Brigid’s Catholic Church in Marrickville, who plans to voluntarily imprison himself in a plastic cell to raise money for a good cause. Father Pearce is one of 10 local figures who have agreed to take part in the mock incarceration for the Marrickville PCYC fundraiser next weekend. He’ll be joined in a cell by Mayor, Morris Hanna, and Independent Councillor, Dimitrios Thanos, to name just a few. “I was asked by a parishioner if I’d be kind enough to do it,” he explained. “I think it’s a great idea for a community event.” Father Pearce isn’t concerned about spending a few hours in a cramped cell with up to nine others – he is more worried about being late for a wedding he is officiating at his church later that afternoon. Claire Currey, from the Marrickville PCYC, said the annual event is a fun way to raise funds for youth programs to keep kids off the streets and away from crime. “People can come down, bring their cash to donate or write a cheque. Th ere’ll also be a BBQ sausage sizzle on the day, so there’s plenty going on,” she said. Time 4 Kids is on Saturday, April 21 from 11am at the Marrickville PCYC.

I have only ever been in one fistfight, and my involvement lasted all of about one second before I was knocked unconscious. As far as I’m concerned, violence is the lowest form of human behaviour. I don’t care who it’s directed towards or why, there are always better ways to try and work things out. But for some reason, society now almost accepts that there will be a certain element of this stupidity on our streets. The other week I was walking through the city when a fi ght broke out – rather than anyone trying to break it up, a crowd instead formed a ring around the two warring parties like it was some sort of title fight in Las Vegas. But then again, why would you intervene? Who knows what sort of knives or other weapons these people could be carrying at the time. I’d be pretty reticent to try and

an association with stop a fi ght these days given the one time I did so, it resulted in an ambulance being called for me. Despite my injuries, I amazingly remember the whole brutal episode. I was driving that night and literally hadn’t consumed a drop of alcohol – with me were my brother and sister. At about 11pm we were heading towards a bar when a clearly intoxicated guy walked straight into my brother. My brother’s response was to give this bloke some not so friendly advice – the next thing I knew, my brother was in a headlock. My involvement was simple and brief… I went in to pull the pair apart, but before I could even get there I was hit from behind and out for the count. I couldn’t move a muscle, yet I could hear everything going on around me – most notably the shrieks of my sister urging me to wake up. When I fi nally came to, I was dazed and had blood coming from my nose, plus one eye completely

closed over. Needless to say when you’re a TV reporter, such a look is not ideal and I ended up off work for two weeks. To be honest though, I’m probably lucky that was all that I had to worry about. You need only watch the news to see how often these kind of incidents result in someone being seriously injured, or killed. And all for what? Because someone spilled your drink? The question of how we fi x these flawed attitudes is a tough one though. For starters I think every high school student should go to one of the repatriation hospitals that helps the victims of such stupid assaults, and see just what goes on. But there are so many other ramifications they should consider before a fi ght – is fi ve years in jail worth it? And what about the effect on your victim’s family? God knows I’d never want to hear a scream like my sister’s again.

emember the Calendar Girls from the Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre? Th is was the group of women with two big ambitions – to have fun producing a glamour calendar and to raise money to help sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Th rough their hard work, the Marrickville Calendar Girls, along with Marrickville Councillors Emanuel Tsardoulias and Victor Macri, were able to present a $16,000 cheque to MS Australia last month. “It was a terrifi c effort, not just from those involved in the actual production of the calendar, but from those who worked behind the scenes to promote and sell so many copies,” said Chrissie Whitlock, who came up with the idea. “We also owe many thanks to all the local businesses and community groups who helped make the production cost of the calendars, 100 per cent self-funded. It enabled us to give all of the profits from sales to MS Australia.” Cr Emanuel Tsardoulias, who is also President of Marrickville Rotary, said the Marrickville Calendar Girls worked extremely hard with the support of the community and Rotary to raise the money in a short period. Copies of the calendar are now hanging in homes as far afi eld as New Zealand, the UK, South Africa, Tokyo, Bolivia, Brazil, Norway and the United States. Gathering seat Aboriginal elders unveil a new seat at Kendrick Park

Plans for the new Marrickville Library are moving forward following a Council meeting this week.

Design chosen

Councillors vote for smaller and cheaper library development BY LOUISE BOURKE

T

he new Marrickville Library will go ahead, though it will be smaller in scale and residents won’t be slugged with a rate rise to fund it. Th is was the result of fourand-a-half hours of debate at a Marrickville Council meeting on Tuesday night, when a revised Labor and Independent-backed motion

was carried 7-5. “The motion that passed tonight will ensure we get a better library without a rate increase and with double the open space,” said Labor Councillor, Emanuel Tsardoulias. A design, known only as ‘Option 2’ at this stage, was chosen by Councillors and the architectural firm behind the design will be requested to report back to Council with alternate lower cost options.

While the Greens Councillors voted against the motion, Cr Max Phillips said he was ultimately happy that an architectural fi rm was on board. He added that the Greens were happy to look at all options in terms of funding and were particularly interested in what the Labor and Independent Councillors plan to do with the open space on the corner of Marrickville and Livingstone Roads.

Aunty Jenny Thomsen at the unveiling of the new seating platform at Kendrick Park.

A

new seating platform at Kendrick Park in Tempe that refl ects Aboriginal culture has been officially unveiled at a special ceremony. A joint project by Marrickville Council and the Marrickville Aboriginal Consultative Committee, the seating arrangement was opened by Aboriginal elders last month. It is a circular design that encourages anyone to

come and meet together, representing the idea of ‘gathering’. “To me, it’s a place to sit and reflect, to meditate and connect with the land there,” said elder, Aunty Jenny Thomsen. “It says about us, yes, we belong here, we’re here. “We live in a very builtup area here, so it’s a place where you can see further than a brick wall, you can see a long way.”

Marrickville Mayor, Morris Hanna, said the new seating reflects the close bonds Aboriginal people had with the Cooks River environment. The design includes images of sand goannas, shellfi sh, baskets and fi sh traps to highlight how Aboriginal people used their knowledge, skills and resources to hunt and gather food on the Cooks River and surrounding lands.

Recycling solution Locals are urged to collect bottles and cans for a cash refund BY LOUISE BOURKE

L

ocals are being urged to collect plastic bottles and aluminium cans to take down to Steel Park on Saturday, April 28 in exchange for a 10 cent cash refund. The Demonstration Recycling Project will show how such an approach could provide a solution to the glut of bottles clogging the river, organisers say. “Come along, bring your friends

and your bottles for a cash refund and help us send a message to environment ministers around Australia,” said Gayle Adams, spokesperson for the Cooks River Valley Association. Environment ministers from the various states will soon decide on nationwide packaging regulation for recyclable materials, including the possible introduction of a nationwide container deposit scheme. “Th is is a fantastic opportunity to show support for a compulsory

refund on plastic soft drink bottles in NSW and nationally,” Ms Adams said. Organisers of next Saturday’s event hope to add what they collect to a bevy of bottles and cans that will go to Canberra for a rally at Parliament House in May. Besides the cash refund, which will continue until funds run out, a number of activities are planned for the Saturday including a competition for the best model boat made from plastic bottles.

➤ Marrickville homeowners and developers can learn more about Council’s development application (DA) process, and the importance of sustainable design, at a free information night on Monday, April 30 from 6pm-8pm. Get excited for all the fun and action associated with the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Country meets city for great show Last Thursday, we packed up the desks early and headed to Homebush for the fun and excitment of the Easter Show BY LOUISE BOURKE

S

ydney’s Royal Easter Show is one of this city’s most-loved annual events, a sentimental favourite with kids and adults alike. But did you know that the show, which pumps $500 million into the state’s economy, is one of the top 10 of its kind in the world and attracts thousands of international visitors each year, many from China and South East Asia? Our reporter, Louise Bourke, was given the difficult task of heading to this year’s show,

083ICD1636

touted as the biggest and best yet, to see what’s on offer. Rides Gentle, fast, headache-inducing or just plain fun – there are rides for everyone at this year’s show. But really, you haven’t done the rides properly if you don’t feel wretchedly sick afterwards – and there are plenty to help you achieve this. The grand old lady of rides – the Super Slide – is back with a number of improvements including a moving walkway and new, comfi er mats (older showgoers, such as this reporter, will remember the old brown hessian sacks of

yesteryear). Promised to us as the “speediest, slipperiest fun you’ve had all year” by ride officials, the improved Super Slide is not far off. Th is year you can also ride the slide at night while grooving to a disco light show. Animals The animal pavilions are the beating heart of the agricultural show. Th ousands of sheep, horses, cattle, dogs and alpacas are in residence with their owners in the hope of winning a coveted blue ribbon. The big Hereford bulls and Clydesdale horses are worth a stop-in, and for the cuteness factor take a walk over to the domestic

animals. For those who like their animal experience in the form of clothing and accessories, the fashion pavilion showcases the best in Australian wool, alpaca and other fl eece clothing including scarves, jumpers, jackets and the ubiquitous sheepskin ugg boots. The Park The Park is a new place to chill-out and is bursting with free activities and entertainment for all ages. Food and wine Dagwood dogs and hot chips, those enduring show favourites, are still readily available, although this year showgoers have the option of dining at the Food and Wine Garden where vendors are serving up some of NSW’s best produce and award-winning wines. If you’d rather fi ne dining on the run, check out the Oyster Bar in the Woolworths Fresh Food Dome. For an afternoon pick-me-up, we can recommend the scones and tea at the Country

Women’s Association tent – it’ll also give you a chance to salivate over the incredible cake decorating competition fi nalists. Events The woodchop has become synonymous with the Easter Show, as it’s the only show in Australia that hosts the world championship events. At the woodchop arena, you’ll be treated to a high-class display of machismo and brute strength as competitors from around the world vie for titles in Underhand, Standing Block, Single-Handed Sawing and Treefelling categories. Over in the main stage, where there’s an

abundance of action throughout the day and into the night, watch (if you can) the daring MotoX motorbike crew with their highflying stunts, or cheer for those tough as guts cowboys in the Sydney Royal Rodeo series. A fi reworks display as part of the Colours of the Outback Pyromusical is worth sticking around for. Showbags Showbags are a uniquely Australian invention and don’t we just love them. There are more than 100 diff erent bags to choose from this year. Along with traditional favourites like Bertie Beetle and Hubba Bubba, this year

you can pick up a Glee!, Dora the Explorer or MasterChef showbag, depending on your taste in entertainment. A word of caution: don’t make the mistake of thinking you can quickly pick up your bags on the way out. We found you’ll be battling tired children and even more tired parents at the end of the day. Grab them around lunchtime instead to ensure you leave with your favourite bags and your sanity intact. The Sydney Royal Easter Show runs until April 18. 10 BUSINESS Business Finance Protection

Keep your assets in mind When it comes to protecting our assets many of us pay big money to insure valuable material belongings, shelling out thousands of dollars each year for premiums to cover our cars, homes and contents. Too many Australians neglect to cover their number one incomeproducing asset – themselves! Income protection insurance is an increasingly common product for many people in business, but it doesn’t always suit small business owners. There’s another type of insurance worth considering if you run a small business – it’s known as ‘key person insurance’ or ‘key man insurance’. As the name suggests, this form of insurance covers the business owner or the most important person for the continuity of the business and includes income protection and life insurance. When you consider that if a small business owner can’t work that their income dries up, income protection insurance and life insurance are so important. Without this cover the ramifications can be disastrous, particularly if you have the added burden of paying business loans, overdrafts, credit cards, suppliers and staff , to name just a few. Given that this insurance is tax deductible, it’s surprising that more SMEs don’t have it.

June 22 to July 22

Energetic Mars is pushing its way through critical Virgo, therefore if you have something to say there will be no holding you back! Between now and July 3 is likely to be an extremely busy time and you will be taking several short distance trips, sending heaps of emails and dealing with correspondence. However, you need to be careful of aggressive conditions on the roads, so do your best to avoid road rage – keep calm when driving!

FRIDAY, APRIL 13 2012

July 23 to August 23

Fiery Mars is situated in the financial section of your chart giving you the opportunity to make a little extra cash on the side. In fact, there could be one or two golden opportunities that are just too good to turn down at this point in time. Try not to get into any arguments with loved ones about financial issues. If a large expense has been worrying you, it is important not to get yourself into a state about it – funds will more than likely be available!

virgo

August 24 to September 23

With Mars firmly situated in your sign, you will demand a lot of freedom at this time and you won’t be in the mood to be tied down. This could be a testing time for an existing relationship as you may have the wanderlust bug and a strong desire to stray. Just remember what happens to the moth when it’s drawn to the flame. Keep this in mind and you’ll know what the consequences of your actions are likely to be!

Mars In Virgo Opposes Neptune; April 15th - July 3rd.

Francis A Bevan libra

September 24 to Oct 23

Mars continues to travel through your 12th house, which means that you will have to watch your behaviour and attitude or you could end up doing something that you later regret. Be scrupulously honest in your dealings with others and make sure that they return the favour. If there are any brooding resentments between yourself and a certain someone, it may take a little longer than usual to get right down to the bottom of the situation!

scorpio

October 24 to Nov 22

You’re certainly ready to stand up for yourself and be counted – you’ll be more than willing to fight for anything that you passionately believe in. You might even join a group of like-minded people and enjoy sharing your thoughts and ideas with kindred spirits. This is going to be a very busy time for you with your friends and acquaintances, as there will be lots of social activities and important events to go to, so make sure you keep your diary up to date!

sagittarius

Nov 23 to Dec 21

Mars will be in Virgo until July 3, and that’s the area of your chart devoted to career and ambition. You’ll love to be ‘King of the Castle’ at this time, but it is important to be careful that your self-confidence isn’t interpreted as pure arrogance. Watch out, too, for a tendency to be overbearing and inflexible. You’ll also be fiercely competitive during the next few weeks, especially if you have something wonderful to strive for, so keep that in mind!

capricorn

Dec 22 to January 20

aquarius

January 21 to Feb 19

Mars has moved into the area of your chart associated with foreign affairs, as well as your beliefs and ideals. It’s important that you adopt a practical approach to any new projects that you’re developing, otherwise they simply won’t come to fruition. Start as you mean to go on and everything should fall into place very nicely. You will have a strong thirst for adventure and long distance travel. So why not plan a trip to somewhere special!

Mars is moving through the section of your chart devoted to big business and shared finances. Don’t forget that this means mortgages and credit card debts, but it could also mean you make a brilliant money-saving discovery if you scour the business pages of the Sunday newspapers. Your physical relationships will get a huge boost at the moment, so don’t allow fears and insecurities to stand in the way of your happiness!

pisces

February 20 to March 20

Mars is moving through Virgo, your opposite sign, until July 3, so this will intensify your desire and heighten your need for emotional and physical intimacy. It’s also entirely possible that a partner – whether it be new or old – is feeling insatiable at the moment. Not that you’ll complain about this, it will be quite the opposite in fact. All your business affairs go up a notch as well, especially if you’re organising a special event!

Staying Healthy

There s no magic pill

Susan Garrad

Not quite feeling it in the bedroom? Q. I have noticed a slump in my libido lately. I’ve been quite stressed, and a bit rundown, could that be why? Defi nitely. Stress is a real passion killer. And being run down means your body is focusing on survival rather than procreation, which is what your libido is for. Actually there are lots of reasons why your libido can drop off. Here are a few others: Zinc deficiency: You know the old joke about oysters being an aphrodisiac? Well it’s true. It’s because oysters are full of zinc – and zinc is the number one mineral when it comes to fertility. A zinc deficiency causes low sperm count in men, and a distinct lack of mojo in both men and women. But where do you get zinc apart from oysters? Well, that’s quite tricky in Australia as our soils and therefore our foods are quite low in zinc compared with other countries such as the US or Europe.

My advice is to get yourself a good quality zinc supplement. Being on the contraceptive pill: Many women report low sex drive on the pill and this is because it flattens out all the female hormones and women don’t get that surge of feeling “in the mood” around ovulation time. Problems in your relationship: A drop in sexual attraction to your partner can sometimes be a sign of other problems in your relationship. How’s your communication? Are you taking the time to talk and connect with each other? Perhaps some counselling would be helpful. If you’ve addressed all of the above but are still struggling, there are some wonderful herbs that have been used for centuries to boost libido – Damiana, Tribulus and the aptly named Horny Goat Weed. If you need help with your libido, make an appointment with Naturopath Susan Garrad from Women’s Health Naturally, Summer Hill. Phone 9798 9322 or visit www. womenshealthnaturally.com.au.

Keeping Fit David Stein Wow! Great to see we got a lot of feedback from last week’s column. Agreeable or not it’s good to see so many people are passionate enough about health to make a call. Some people are sure cholesterol will kill you. I guess when even just one statin drug like Lipitor makes about $130 billion, and a chunk of that money gets put back into promotions, the argument for and against gets a little one sided. And not just through advertisements. Google ‘Jesse Polansky lawsuit’, and a CBS news report says “the suit raises some interesting allegations about how Pfi zer (the world’s biggest drugmaker) influences health officials whose job it is to encourage us all to lower our cholesterol. In 2003, according to the suit, Pfi zer funded the National Lipid Education Council, a continuing medical education group whose job was to educate doctors on cholesterol issues”. So it’s not surprising studies such as the SEAS – which showed little benefit to using statin but actually a significant increase in cancer rates – are not well known. It’s pretty

simple marketing. Th e more people who think total cholesterol is bad, the more will take a drug to lower it. Did you know they do a kid friendly chewable form of Lipitor? Good doctors do more research than what the drug rep hands them. Dr Ross Walker said on his 2UE show on March 3 that statins are being overprescribed too much. Check out websites like thincs. org or go to mercola.com and type in statins or cholesterol. Even Dr Walter Willett, Chairman of Nutrition at Harvard, formerly a leading low fat stalwart, has recently said “fat is not the problem” – diet changes such as cutting out refined sugar and

flour “would wipe out almost all the problems we have with weight and diabetes and other metabolic diseases”. Any sensible health professional will agree lifestyle is a hugely better way of reducing or even reversing cardio vascular and a host of other diseases for the majority of people. And there’s no side effects! If you eat rubbish and don’t exercise, don’t think there is an easy option, no pill is going to fi x you. There’s an ancient chinese proverb “he that takes medicine and neglects diet, wastes the skills of the physician”. A sound bit of advice from a long time ago.

TIGER RUMBLINGS Do or die for the Tigers?

Troy Dodds

Get on your bike Cycling is the sport of the month at Marrickville Council 30 minutes (5 kilometres) to Tempe Reserve. A light lunch will be provided at the end of the ride. Both rides will be led by Bike Marrickville volunteers, a local cycling support group that provides information, advice and rides for members of the local community and local schools. Before the bike rides begin, Glow Worm Bicycles and Domestique Cycling Projects will be holding short

information sessions on bike safety, bike maintenance and riding with children. Riders should meet at The Waterplay Park car park at Steel Park in Marrickville for registration at 9.00am. Participants are asked to bring their own bikes in good, roadworthy condition, a helmet and water bottle. Contact 9335 2191, complete the registration form and hand it in on the day.

Well done to the NRL who this week banned former Tigers player Robert Lui for the rest of the season. Th e Cowboys player pleaded guilty to assaulting his partner after a Tigers mad Monday celebration.

Making your debut is a brilliant thing but even coach Tim Sheens knows that at the moment, it’s tough for any youngster being brought into the side to help the Tigers injury crisis. “It’s not always easy to step up given the pressure we are under with a one and five start,” he said. With the number of injuries the Tigers have, Sheens will continue to rely on youth and inexperience in the coming weeks and possibly months.

Frank Pritchard, Ben Smith, David Simmons, Kevin Kingston, Fetuli Talanoa, Anthony Tupou, James Tedesco, Cameron King and Mose Masoe were among the NRL stars bringing the fun and excitement of the Telstra Premiership to Sydney’s Royal Easter Show yesterday. Rugby League Reads, Backyard League clinics, autograph sessions and cheerleading routines were among the activities. One Community Ambassadors including Andrew Ryan, Michael Vella, Rhys Wesser and Mark Riddell also joined in the fun ahead of an exciting round of Telstra Premiership action.

ith the cooler weather upon us, April is the perfect time to get your family on their bikes to cycle along the Cooks River as part of Marrickville Council’s Sporta-Month promotion. Two family bike rides are being offered on Saturday, April 28 from 9.30am1.30pm: a two hour (16 kilometre) return ride to Brighton Le-Sands Beach or an easier return ride for

The Tigers will very much miss Matt Groat and Chris Heighington this weekend. They’re two tough men and would have run all over the Panthers if given a chance.

t may be a little too early to be saying this, but is this weekend do or die for the Tigers? Plenty will say it’s not, because the Tigers will at some point come good, win eight in a row and coast into the fi nals. But what if that doesn’t happen? Penrith are way out of form at the moment and the Tigers need to pounce. If they don’t win on Sunday, it just may mean no fi nals in 2012.
