INTERIOR STYLE

FINDING YOUR NEW STYLE RE-VAMPING YOUR HOME

JO PULETUA INTERIOR STYLE & DESIGN CONSULTANT AT HARII.COM.AU @HARII.BOHEME

So you want to re-vamp a room in your house. You’re a bit of a novice, but know what you do and don’t like in terms of style. You want it to look magazine worthy, but don’t really know where to start. Don’t worry, you’re not alone! One of the hardest parts of starting this journey is pinpointing the style you want. It’s not uncommon for people to get lost along the way and steer in all different style directions, often ending up with a very confused looking space. Here are a couple of key points on how to get you started on sourcing and styling a cohesive space that is perfect for you! Start a Mood Board Like anything, you need to do your research. Read about the key features and look at images Friday, December 6, 2019

of on-trend interior styles such as Scandi, Bohemian, Minimalist, Mid-Century, Hamptons, Retro... the list goes on. You will find one that you gravitate to, and when you do, stick to it! Interior design magazines are an obvious reference point, but social media sites such as Instagram or Pinterest are also incredible tools. When it comes to social media, you can never underestimate the power of clicking on a #hashtag. Search and click on #interiorstyle for example, and discover the world of interiors! Pick a colour palette A good colour palette has the power to anchor an entire room. Colour palette inspiration can be found on interior paint websites such as the Inspiration Gallery on the Dulux Website (www.dulux. com.au) or the Colouriser page on the British Paints website (www. britishpaints.com.au). Consider the amount of natural or artificial light in your room when selecting your colours and the mood you want to set. When selecting paint colours for a room that is used primarily before sunrise or after sunset, choose the colours whilst only under the lighting that will be used in the room to get the best possible result. Simplicity and consistency This applies to both of the key points above. Once you have conducted a bit of research, select a colour or style and stick to it! Unless your style is a deliberate mish mash, don’t get tempted to divert from your selection or ‘mix it up’. Applying these basic principles when selecting furnishings and finishes is critical. NEWS FEATURE

BECOMING WATER WISE HARSH RESTRICTIONS ARE ON THE WAY Level 2 water restrictions will be put into play on December 10 for the first time in almost a decade, meaning we need to work together to preserve our water. Roughly 75 per cent of Sydney’s water supply goes to residential users, with a quarter of that share used outdoors in such places as gardens. Hand watering is an important and enjoyable part of gardening; the perfect form of meditation! What better way to start your day than getting out there early in the morning, with a hose in one hand and a cuppa in the other; just you, your thoughts and your garden. Hand watering not only gives you the chance to get up close and personal with your plants, and the

opportunity to spot early signs that they are unhappy, but also the chance to get on top of pest and disease problems before they take control. Get your hands on a Nylex Premium spray gun; it has seven different functions for all your watering needs and allows you to easily shut the water on and off with its simple to use click control design, so there’s no wastage. You’ll also need a long-handled spray wand for those hard- toreach places. It’s perfect for watering deep garden beds and allows you to direct the water down low, getting moisture to the roots of your plants. Watering at the roots reduces water loss to wind and

evaporation and gets water to where the plants need it most. It also makes sense to water deeply, but less often. This encourages plants to develop stronger, deeper root systems, giving them a better survival chance.

You may also water lawns and gardens with a watering can or bucket at any time – so get out the big blue Nylex watering can! The watering rose is peppered with small holes that give you an even distribution.

SIMON’S HOUSE

WINDOW TINTING YOU WON’T REGRET IT!

SIMON STEVENSON SIMONSHOUSE.COM.AU

I’ve lived in my house for 10 years with a whole wall of east facing windows. The summer heat in the room, even with blinds, was unbearable from first thing in the morning. I was getting my car windows tinted one day and spoke to Mal from Forest Window Tinting, he suggested getting my house windows done. I did a year and a half ago, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made! I can now have my blinds open all day long and enjoy the beautiful sunny days! I went with a reflective tint which has also given privacy during the day, the living room is bearable and my energy bills have been reduced.

Even if you have blinds or curtains, the heat gets in the room, but tint stops it at the glass before it gets in! Did you know that the windows and glass in your home are the biggest source of heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer? In addition to saving on energy bills, there are many other benefits to having your windows tinted,

like protection against glare and heat. It’s a whole lot easier to see my TV now too! Protection against sun damage and fading for your furniture and floors. And added privacy is definitely a bonus. With so many films available, there’ll be one to suit you. Clear tint offers protection but still allows you to keep your view, so there’s no change to the look of your home. Security and safety films help protect from break ins or severe weather by helping hold the glass together, making it stronger and less likely to shatter. Reflective and frosted tints give you more protection and privacy. You know what THAT means? You can dance around to ABBA and the neighbours won’t complain!
