LIGHT UP YOUR GARDEN

HOW TO TRANSFORM YOUR OUTDOOR AREAS

Outdoor lighting can transform your external areas both in appeal and functionality. Lighting is a great way to add atmosphere and accent your landscaping by illuminating design features, contours of walls and plants. It will add beauty, safety and security to all your outdoor spaces allowing usage day or night. Here are some outdoor lighting options showing how you can illuminate your landscaped areas. Bollard lights Bollards light the surroundFriday, January 17, 2020

safely and deter intruders. They are best placed next to pathways or in garden beds on either side. They can also be used to accent certain plants or features whilst lighting the path.

Path lighting Path lights come in many styles such as lanterns, lamps, posts or as recessed or paver lights. Recessed lights can be installed in the edges of walkways. Path lights may be the most important lighting to install, as you want to be able to walk through your landscape at night

Spike lights Spike lights are used most often for highlighting a focal point in the foreground while the background remains relatively dark. Spotlighting will create lovely shadows and define interesting architectural elements. These are also used for “Up Lighting (illuminating from below) providing a contrast of

light and shadow adding a sense of tranquillity and depth in your garden. Wall lights Wall lights can be used to spotlight onto a BBQ or outdoor dining area, out onto the lawn, or onto a pond or feature in the garden that will benefit from being lit from above. The team at Fresh Perspective Landscapes are able to assist with lighting design solutions for all your outdoor areas. Why not give us a call? Home & Garden Magazine

PREPARING FOR A SALE

HOW TO NOT SCARE OFF POTENTIAL BUYERS In any real estate market, two things remain crucial, good presentation and marketing of the property. Selling a property can be an emotional and stressful time, especially if it’s the family home being sold. This can make it hard for owners to see their home from a potential buyer’s viewpoint. Here are some tips for preparing the property for market. Less is more! Decluttering the property is a must for anyone selling. When we’ve lived in a home for a long time, we can become complacent with a bit (or a lot) of clutter. Decluttering the space helps

potential buyers feel better about being in the space as most home purchases are an emotional purchase, you need to do everything to help feel comfortable in the space. De-personalise Family photos in your home are part of what make it ‘your home’. Unfortunately, this can make potential buyers feel they are intruding in your personal space and make it harder for some to imagine themselves living there! De- personalising the home by removing family photos from walls and shelves will help. A photo here or there is fine, but too many can have a negative effect. A lick of paint The most cost- effective way to freshen up a home with the most impact would be to give the home a fresh lick of paint. Even more cost effective if you can do it yourself! It’s true kitchens and bathrooms do often sell homes, but freshly painted walls help with good first impressions at minimal cost. Make sure to keep paint colours neutral and light. Don’t forget the outside! We all know that street appeal to potential buyers can sometimes be the deciding factor as to whether they even look at it. A few must dos for the outside are tidying up the garden beds, perhaps some fresh mulch, trimming trees and bushes that look untidy, cleaning hard surfaces, removing spider webs and clean the windows. Clean windows make the view from the inside of the property a lot nicer too! Next week we’ll have tips on how to DYI style your home before going to market.

IN THE GARDEN

HOME GROWN IT’S TOMATO TIME!

MIRVA CRINNION MRFOTHERGILLS.COM.AU

Tomatoes are the most popular choice of home grown produce and with many varieties available there is always something new and delicious to try! You can start your tomato seeds early by sowing them indoors now in Jiffy® Peat Pots or Pellets. A Jiffy® Windowsill Greenhouse will also provide a perfect seed raising environment. Cover the seeds lightly with fine soil and keep the soil moist but not too wet. To aid germination, keep the pots at approx. 15- 20°C. Alternatively tomato seeds can be sown direct into a garden bed as soon as the risk of frost has passed. Transplant the seedlings into the garden when they are large enough to handle. If you have grown your tomatoes in Jiffy®

Peat Pots or Pellets, you can transplant the seedling with pot and all, thus avoiding transplantation shock. Before transplanting young plants, acclimatise them to outside conditions by placing in a

sheltered location for a few hours during the day, gradually increasing the time over a two week period. Then plant into their final growing position at the spacing

indicated on the packet. Mulch the ground around the plants once the soil has fully warmed up. This will help to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Feed the plants every two weeks with organic fertiliser, such as Seaweed solution or manure, and apply a highpotash fertiliser when the flowers start to form fruit. Tall growing varieties will need support, either with canes or string. Side shoots also need pinching out regularly. These appear between a leaf node and the main stem, just below the flower stem. Mr Fothergill’s range of tomato seeds include all key favourites such as Grosse Lisse and Roma, and exciting super sweet and high yielding ones such as Sweet Million F1, Sungold F1 and Cherry Falls.
