PETER HAS THE POWERS TO AMAZE
03
Peter Powers tells SHANNON COCHRANE of the highs and lows of being a hypnotist; from learning the art, to the bedroom perks and dealing with his disapproving parents...
B
eing able to control the thoughts and actions of everyone around is a fantasy for most people, but for Peter Powers it’s simply another day at
work. The stage hypnotist has become renowned for his rowdy, laugh-a-minute shows in which he makes his glaze-eyed volunteers mindlessly embarrass themselves on stage for the crowd’s amusement. The British-born performer is well-loved in Australia, and will be returning this month with a performance at Blacktown RSL Club on Saturday, September 28. “It’ll be a fun night, a little bit mad, a little bit crazy, always spontaneous because I never know how people are going to react to the different routines... there are no two shows that are alike,” Powers said. While some shyer audience members may be concerned that they’ll be pulled up onto the stage and become the helpless victim of Powers’ shenanigans, the performer insists that there’s nothing to worry about. “I’ve met so many people over the years who said, ‘I would love to come and watch your show but I don’t want to end up on the stage and I say, ‘well neither would I, I wouldn’t volunteer for one of my shows either’ but you don’t have to and nobody ends up on the stage against their wishes,” he said. As a young boy, Powers had always been drawn to the paranormal but stumbled into the world of hypnosis by chance after attempting to imitate a hypnotist he saw in a movie. Taking his father’s pocket watch, Powers set about pretending to hypnotise his younger brother and was amazed when his sibling started to fall into a trance.
FYi Issue 151 Editor Troy Dodds Troy.Dodds@mediaview.com.au
“He was sat there with his face looking a bit gaunt, something strange about him, so I clapped my hands in front of his face and he nearly jumped out of his skin and that was one of the most defining moments of my life, because I knew there was something in this, there was some kind of a magic or something that works about it and I’d just tapped into it,” Powers said. After rushing down to the library the next day and devouring a 1940’s book revealing the secrets of hypnotism, Powers kept using his brother as a “guinea pig” until he began testing his acts on school friends and eventually honed his skills to a level that made him the star he is today. Powers is undeniably one of the world’s most popular hypnotists – he has made 60 television shows, performed to rapturous applause across the globe and even broken records. So what is the secret to his craft, and is hypnotism something that can be picked up by anyone? “I always use the analogy of maybe a footballer or a snooker player, or any profession really, a journalist or a movie director. Can anybody be an actress, can anybody be a movie director, can anybody play football or snooker or a musical instrument? And the answer is yes, why can’t somebody pick up and play a guitar, everbody can but some people will have a natural aptitude for it and other people might practice forever and never be any good,” he explained. Equipped with such an amazing talent, it’s no surprise that Powers has been tempted to use hypnosis for personal gain although he insists he has never used it illegally. “You know, they say ‘could you rob a bank,

Everyone can but some people have a natural aptitude for it... could you take money off somebody, could you get somebody to have sex with you for example’... well of course that was something that went through my mind but I’ve never used it illegally. “I don’t know whether you could say I’ve always used it ethically at all, but I certainly didn’t breach that or procure consent using hypnosis although I do believe that’s possible. But I certainly used it to enhance the whole experience, which if you consider that 80 or 90 percent of the sexual experience is in the mind, hypnosis lends itself extremely well to enhance the whole experience,” he said. But despite the definite benefits of hypnotic ability, there are downsides too. While Powers has thrilled audiences
worldwide with his shows, there are two people who have never witnessed his performances: his religious parents. “They’ve never seen a television show or performance or anything and I don’t talk to them about what I do... I was cut off for 20 years because of what I do and that turned around a very short while ago but even so it’s quite delicate,” Powers said.
Peter Powers will perform at Blacktown RSL on Saturday, September 28 at 8pm. Tickets are $35. For bookings or more information, call 9622 5222 or visit www.blacktownrsl.com.au.

COWBOYS AND HONKY TONKS TOUR
T
wo rising stars in the Australian country music industry have united to create a formidable team ready to take fans by storm. Talented musicians Doug Bruce and Roo Arcus will perform together in the ‘Cowboys and Honky Tonks Tour’, coming to Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, September 6. Hailing from the country-loving oasis of Texas in the USA, Doug Bruce moved down under to Northern Victoria with his Australian wife eight years ago. The former drummer took the brave step to the front of the stage to show off his vocals six years ago, debuting his original songs to the world. Since then, he has steadily built up a reputation among Aussie country fans, with Bruce releasing three self-produced albums including his latest album ‘Made That Way’, which was made at his own recording studio. The album, which was released in January 2013, had a number two spot on the national radio chart and the title track single spent
several weeks in the Country Music Channel’s Top 30 countdown. Bruce also received praise for his second album ‘A Good Place’, which spawned four radio hits and brought his music to the attention of the mainstream country music industry. Bruce’s partner in crime on stage is country music sensation Roo Arcus, a rising star who first emerged in the industry in the late 90’s. Arcus had the privilege of touring with the late, great Slim Dusty and even writing a song for him. He showed promise in his early career, with debut album ‘Station Boy’ released in 2000 and earning him two Golden Guitar nominations and the Independent Male Rising Star Award. Despite the success Arcus achieved, he delayed his musical career when his personal life was struck by tragedy in 2004 and now nine years on, he is ready to reboot his career. He released his latest album ‘This Here
Cowboy’ late 2012, with the record already impressing country fans with its traditional sound. These true blue country musicians have unique sounds that will unite to create a must-see concert.
The Cowboys and Honky Tonks Tour will be held at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, September 6 at 8pm. Tickets are $20. For bookings or more information, call 9625 5500 or visit www. rootyhillrsl.com.au.
She founded Clockfire in France and has produced and created three developments for the Old 505 Theatre: ‘Lei Hideaway’, ‘The Grief Parlour’ and ‘A Hunger Suite’. ‘The Grief Parlour’ will be shown at the

JOURNEY TO THE GRIEF PARLOUR
A
touching new play will take audiences on an emotional journey without having to leave their seats. Clockfire Theatre’s poignant, engaging production ‘The Grief Parlour’ will be showing at the Riverside Theatres in Parramatta from Thursday, September 12. The play promises to tug on audience members’ heartstrings as it takes them on a surreal and magical journey that ponders the grieving process and whether it is possible to have reunion with loved ones after death. With a deep, emotional core, ‘The Grief Parlour’ is filled with intimate connections between characters, life-changing moments and absurd imagery that represent the realities of life after loss. “The Grief Parlour explores the grieving process and how it may be experienced by those who we have lost. We hope audiences will be moved and warmed by this visual and physical exploration of grief and its challenges,” artistic director Emily Ayoub said.
Created by Clockfire Theatre as a creative ensemble, ‘The Grief Parlour’ features music from Ben Pierpoint and text by Jessica Bellamy and was inspired by the French Lecoq tradition of physical theatre. Bellamy received the 2013 ATYP Foundation Commission and also wrote ‘Compass’ and ‘Fight or Flight’. A talented cast of actors has been guided by the expert direction of Jo Turner, known as one of Australia’s finest directors, who brings his wealth of experience to the show. He has directed a range of shows at the Sydney Opera House including ‘Peter and the Wolf’, ‘My First Time’ and ‘Darlingwood Tales’, as well as other productions for the Sydney Theatre Company such as ‘Fools Island’ and ‘Stolen Workshop’. The artistic director of Clockfire Theatre Company, Emily Ayoub, graduated from Theatre Nepean in 2005 and also attended Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School Paris in 2011.

SPRINGSTEEN COMES BACK FOR MORE!
T
hey’re known as one of the greatest rock acts on earth and now Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will be bringing their tunes down under for a thrilling show. The band will be touring Australia next year, performing at Sydney’s Allphones Arena on Wednesday, February 19. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band visited Australia earlier this year for the first time in more than a decade, with their Wrecking Ball Tour dazzling fans. Springsteen’s long-standing manager and producer Jon Landau said that the 2013 Australian shows were so enjoyable, the band were excited and enthusiastic to come back for more concerts. “Our shows in Australia earlier this year were among the very best and most satisfying of our whole 128 show tour,” Landau said. “The crowds were tremendous, the fans as warm, friendly, and welcoming as we could ever hope for, and the quality of the
performances, as virtually every reviewer commented, were spectacularly high,” Landau added. Critics agreed that the Wrecking Ball tour was a smashing success, with the band’s energy and stage presence earning them the 2013 Helpmann Award for ‘Best International Contemporary Concert’. The Australian newspaper raved about Springsteen’s performances, writing: “An important artist of his or any generation, Springsteen remains possibly the most vital front man of the modern era. Long may he run”. Springsteen has had a wildly successful career, with his 17 studio albums selling 120 million records across the globe. His songs are iconic and have stood the test of time, with radios still playing classics such as ‘Born in the USA’, ‘Born to Run’, ‘Hungry Heart’, ‘Atlantic City’ and ‘I’m On Fire’. The veteran performer has received the Kennedy Centre Honours, and won 20
Grammy Awards, two Golden Globes, an Academy Award and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, New Jersey Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame and the American Academy of Arts and Science.

hile there has been no shortage of supernatural and vampire-themed movies of late, Neil Jordan’s ‘Byzantium’ manages to stand out from the pack. The film centres on a motherdaughter team who are both vampires and have been eluding human attention for 200 years, flitting between different parts of the globe. Mother Clara abandons her daughter Eleanor during the Napoleonic Wars when she is forced into prostitution to make a living. The family then run off to find a new life for themselves and stumble upon a beautiful yet neglected coastal resort. The flirtatious, outgoing Clara quickly becomes enamored with reserved local Noel, who is the heir to the dilapidated Byzantium Hotel. As they get closer, Clara works on restoring the hotel and ends up turning it into a makeshift brothel. The shy and pensive Eleanor forges a relationship with waiter Frank. The vampires’ secret is threatened to be exposed when Eleanor opens up a bit too much.

atin pop sensation Gloria Estefan has sold millions of albums across the globe and now she’s adding another record to her discography with highly awaited covers album ‘The Standards’. While she is best known for her fiery, passionate Latin and dancepop, inspired by her Cuban-American heritage, on this album she adopts a different genre as she turns her powerful vocals to classic pop standards from the Great American Songbook. The concept for the album came from Estefan’s childhood love of jazz and swing music from stars such as Frank Sinatra and Johnny Mathis, and the result is a more sophisticated and timeless sound. A range of classic hits are covered, including ‘They Can’t Take That Away From Me’, ‘Embraceable You’, ‘The Way You Look Tonight’, ‘Young At Heart’ and ‘You Made Me Love You’. Estefan also collaborates with diverse artists, including Italian pop singer Laura Pausini, award-winning violinist Joshua Bell and saxophonist Dave Koz.
While the covers retain all the elegance and quality of the original songs, Estefan also puts her own stamp on the music by mixing in different genres with Cubaninspired sounds. Overall, ‘The Standards’ is an interesting take on beloved classics and shows off Estefan’s impressive voice.

FIANO PROVES A FABULOUS FIND FROM SERAFINO WINE by David Ellis
F
iano is a very popular white in the Mediterranean, hailing from Italy’s southern Campania region as well as from the island of Sicily. And it is now starting to get the attention of grape-growers and winemakers here – and with consumers, too who are discovering its enjoyable vibrant and bright fruit flavours and rich palate. One local maker with a Fiano worth seeking out is McLaren Vale’s Serafino Wines, that was founded by Steve (Serafino) Maglieri in 1968, and who’s current Chief Winemaker, Charles Whish, is a Jimmy Watson Trophy recipient. Their 2013 Serafino Bellissimo Fiano bursts with citrus and stone fruit aromas, and is crisp and refreshing in the mouth, offering nice hints of honeysuckle and lemon citrus. Made from fruit hand-picked from Serafino’s first Fiano crop, it’s sure to instantly appeal to those who enjoy broadening their wine-tasting experiences.
Particularly enjoyable with seafoods, at $18 match it as we go into our warmer months with whole oven-baked fish such as snapper, a fresh garden salad and garlic bread – just as they do back in its Mediterranean homeland. One to note: Western Australia’s Ferngrove has launched a new-era Limited Release range from the Frankland River in the State’s famed Great Southern region, including a rewarding 2011 Malbec. Senior Winemaker, Kim Horton says the range epitomises the best from Frankland River, which is one of the coolest wineproducing areas in WA. And the 2011 Malbec is one, he says, the whole Ferngrove team is particularly excited about, as while displaying robust tannins and dark plum and spice on the palate, it’s interestingly restrained rather than a smack-in-the-mouth flavour hit. Pay $20 and match this buy-now, drinknow drop with pork and fennel sausages served with potato mash infused with a good handful of Italian parsley.
ou certainly won’t leave Outback Steakhouse with an empty stomach that is for certain! The meals are of a generous portion, and taste brilliant! Why not try some cheesy fries or a famous Bloomin’ Onion for a starter, and then move on to one of the delicious steaks – we love the Victoria’s Fillet the best! It’s not only steak they do well here, either. The Alice Springs Chicken is one of the best items on the menu and a must try dish for any occasion. Make sure you book as it’s one of Penrith’s most popular restaurants. Panthers complex, Mulgoa Road, Penrith. Phone 4732 2577.
I
t can be easy to forget the great food that Nando’s has on offer, but quietly tucked away in the Centro Nepean complex, chicken and chips doesn’t get much better than this! Plus the range on the menu will simply amaze you but don’t forget to try the Portuguese flame grilled butterfly cut peri peri chicken! With sit-in or take-away options, Nando’s is a great choice for the entire family or for your next party. You’ll love the spices, the flavour and the great prices… there’s very little not to love about Nando’s. They even do catering!

CHATTER ON THE BOX with Nathan Taylor
S
ir David Frost, the great UK broadcaster who famously interviewed US President Richard Nixon in 1977 died last Sunday, aged 74. The veteran journalist and broadcaster passed away of a suspected heart attack while making a speech on a cruise ship. Frost interviewed everyone from royalty to prime ministers, celebrities and business leaders. He will be missed dearly in the journalistic world. ‘MasterChef Australia’ crowned its latest winner last Sunday night with 32-year-old Emma Dean taking the top prize. It’s also been confirmed by Channel Ten that ‘MasterChef’ will only be back for one offering next year with
no spin-offs planned. This is definitely a good move because it won’t make people sick of the show, allowing more people to get excited about its return. One show that is sure to get people talking this Sunday is the Australian version of ‘The Bachelor’. The new Channel Ten series will premiere at 7.30pm and will no doubt do very well in the ratings. The ‘Sneak Peeks’ Ten have already aired look really promising and I’m sure both the men and women of Australia will be keen to see what’s going on. In overseas news, the ‘American Idol’ judging merry go-round has shifted into gear
again with jazz singer Harry Connick Jr. tipped to be the show’s new third judge. Sources say Connick Jr. is close to inking a deal which will see him sit beside Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez on the panel. If this rumour does pay off it seems ‘Idol’ is going for a very conservative panel this year as opposed to last year, which featured feisty Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey. The finale of ‘Big Brother’ has been revealed with the show set to end on Wednesday, October 23. Meanwhile, the housemates had an interesting week this week with Labor’s Kevin Rudd, Liberal’s Tony Abbott, Greens’ Christine Milne and Palmer United’s Clive Palmer all leaving exclusive
video messages to the housemates ahead of tomorrow’s election. This is the first time a Federal Election has been held during an Australian ‘Big Brother’ series and boy did it get the housemates talking. US drama ‘The Glades has been axed after four seasons due to poor ratings. The show starred Aussie Matt Passmore. Lastly, Channel Ten have announced former Australian rugby international Matt Bourke will become their new sports presenter on the 5pm News. Bourke replaces Brad McEwan who is off to Melbourne to present the News down south.

STILLWAYS: A MEMOIR By Steve Bisley
F
amed Australian actor Steve Bisley has always been popular with audiences but now they can get a deeper insight into his life. Known as one of the country’s favourite actors, Bisley began working in film alongside Mel Gibson in ‘Mad Max’ and later went on to appear in a range of movies including ‘A Town Like Alice’, ‘Squizzy Taylor’, ‘Silver City’ and ‘The Big Steal’. He has also starred in theatre productions and in TV series ‘The Flying Doctors’, ‘GP’, ‘Police Rescue’, ‘Frontline’, ‘Water Rats’ and more. Now, he has turned his sights to the literary world, releasing his self-penned memoir Stillways, which delves into his childhood in the outback. Stillways is bound to be an Aussie classic, focusing on Bisley’s youth as a bright larrikin boy being raised in a simpler era on a farm. Many readers of Bisley’s generation will be able to relate to the story’s atmosphere, with young Steve embodying the characteristics of the typical Australian boy of the time – he had daydreams of cars, girls and escape. Bisley had been toying with the idea to write a memoir for a few years when he finally decided to begin writing and showed it to a friend. After six months of working on it, Stillways was finished and the result is an impressive, evocative book that is far more polished than readers would expect from a first-time author. While Bisley is best known for his acting skills, he insists
that stepping into the role of writer was not overly difficult. “It wasn’t difficult… if there was any effort at all it was just finding the voice that I wanted in the book because I could remember all the details, I knew pretty well where I wanted to go with the story,” he said. Bisley’s writing is so vivid that readers will feel like they are experiencing the sights and sounds of the bush as well. From the scent of woodsmoke to the laughter of children at the bus stop, the excitement of sneaking in to watch a local show and the thrill of growing up and falling in love, Stillways takes the reader on a journey that will make a lasting impact. “It’s just the way I am I guess, I just imagined that everyone else had the same level of recall that I do. I can remember the smells and I can remember what the light was like in the room at any given time and what the seasons were and all those tastes and smells that are in the book and the feel of first love,” Bisley said of his writing style. But while the book has plenty of picturesque scenery and warm nostalgia, darker themes begin to emerge as the story unfolds and we discover that Steve’s family life isn’t as rosy as it seems. Stillways explores the horror of a father taking his frustrations out by beatinghis young children, a mother who would go to any length to protect her kids and a boy permanently changed by his dad’s behaviour. This touching, honest book is utterly gripping.

FESTIVAL WILL HAVE YOU OVER THE MOON IN CELEBRATION by David Ellis
I
f you believe everything you read you’ll know that the Moon is in fact nothing but green cheese, it’s inhabited by rabbits, can be responsible for rampaging werewolves and temporary lunacy down here on earth, and that once upon a time a cow jumped over it. As well, those supposed landings on it by Americans were nothing but a monumental hoax, orchestrated by NASA with Hollywood’s help to prove America was thrashing Russia in the space race. And that it wasn’t an American man named Armstrong who was the first person to supposedly walk upon the moon, but a Chinese lady named Chang’e, who floated all the way up there eons before America was ever heard of. But forget all that: what is truth, is that the mythological great journey of Chang’e is now reason for one of Australia’s biggest annual events, the Cabramatta Moon Festival that draws 90,000 fun-seekers to this Sydney suburb one day every September. Because according to Chinese legend Chang’e and her husband were immortals who lived in heaven, where one day the 10 sons of the Jade Emperor mysteriously transformed
into 10 suns, scorching the earth below. To stop the earth being ruined, the Jade Emperor sought help from Chang’e’s husband, the great archer Houyi – whose solution was, with his mighty bow, to shoot down nine of the suns, so sparing the tenth to be the universe’s only remaining sun. Anything but happy that while the earth may have been saved nine of his sons were now dead, the Emperor furiously banished Houyi and Chang’e to live down there on earth, worse still, as mere mortals. And seeing Chang’e’s now-great misery over her loss of immortality, Houyi decided to seek-out the earth’s mysterious Queen Mother of the West, whom he knew held the magical Pill of Immortality. Eventually successful in his mission, he brought the Pill home, with instructions that he and his wife would need one half each to become immortal once more. He then placed the Pill in a case for safe keeping, and while he had warned Chang’e that she was not to open it, curiosity got the better of her and she did open the case and discover the pill. But then hearing her husband returning to the room, Chang’e in panic swallowed the
entire pill… causing her to start floating off into the sky, and re-immortality. Although Houyi craved to bring her back to earth, he could not bear to shoot an arrow into her, and Chang’e floated aloft until landing on the Moon. Lonely without her husband, she found company in the form of a jade rabbit who manufactured elixirs… their lives leading to the mythologies of Japan, Korea and China, and about rabbits living on the Moon. And today, every September across south-east Asia, millions of people celebrate the Moon Festival, the actual date being the equinox when daylight and darkness are of equal length, and this year occurring on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. In Australia the Cabramatta Moon Festival is recognised as one of our biggest and brightest Asian cultural celebrations, attracting around 90,000 visitors, Asian and Western alike, with this year’s event on Sunday, September 15, running from 11am to 8pm, and coincidentally is the 15th such Festival. The streets of Cabramatta, that boasts Australia’s largest Vietnamese community, will erupt with colour, activity and culinary delights, culminating with a massive evening fireworks
display. Highlights will include such favourites as noodle eating, prawn peeling and moon-cake eating competitions, lion dancing, cultural performances and a lantern parade led by the “Moon Goddess”. Headline acts will feature popular children’s entertainer Peppa Pig, and Alvin Quah the 2010 Channel 10 ‘MasterChef’ contestant and TV identity. Peppa is a lovable, cheeky little piglet who lives with little brother George, Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig and will provide entertainment throughout the day, and meet and greet visitors – particularly the kids. And Alvin Quah is still one of Australia’s most loved personalities to come out of the ‘MasterChef’ series; known for his animated, witty and vibrant personality, he is on a mission to make the cuisine of his birth-country, Malaysia as renowned as that of China or Thailand, staging two Malaysian cooking demonstrations during the Cabramatta Moon Festival.
