JON ENGLISH ROCKS ON

SHANNON COCHRANE talks to legendary Aussie rocker Jon English about his career on stage and screen, and takes him back to the first time he experienced live music...

M

ost music lovers can fondly recall the first real concert they ever went to, and veteran performer Jon English is no exception. In his case, the day that the then 15-yearold saw The Beatles perform live wasn’t just special – it was life-changing, propelling him onto a career path that would make him a household name. “I think when my sister took me to see The Beatles at Rushcutters Bay Stadium in Sydney in 1964, that was when I sort of went ‘wow, this is great’ and more to the point it was when I thought, ‘Jesus, maybe I could do this, make a living out of it’. So that was probably the ultimate moment,” English said. The iconic rock band are undoubtedly English’s favourite, and one of many that he pays homage to in his show ‘Trilogy of Rock’, which he will perform at the EVAN Theatre on Friday, September 20. Covering classic rock songs from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, the show is a mixture of his three previous rock tribute shows, which have enjoyed major success.

FYi Issue 153 Editor Troy Dodds Troy.Dodds@mediaview.com.au

“The first one was basically a one-off gig and it was put together by a bunch of guys from Gosford, who were very talented young musicians who wanted to concentrate basically on the music from 1963 to 1980, which was the formative years of the baby boomers, of which I’m one... that was probably the most fruitful period in music there’s ever been as well,” English said. The British-born musician moved to Australia when he was 12-years-old, and said that he began playing music in his teens, partly because it was a good way to pass the time. “We were from the western suburbs of Sydney and there wasn’t a big surfing culture there, for obvious reasons, and there wasn’t a lot to do, so you had two choices – you could kind of hang out around the station... or play music,” he explained. The teenager chose the latter, devoting himself to honing his musical skills and working his way up from high school bands to performing at local pubs and clubs. “There were little garage bands in school, everyone was wanting to be a rock star

because we figured out you pulled more chicks that way,” he joked. “There were a lot of venues you could play at too in those days, everyone booked a live band as opposed to a DJ so you got to play live a lot.” English got his first taste of professional performance in the late 60’s when he joined Sebastian Hardie, but although he loved being in a rock band, he left in 1972 after being cast

Now’ is what he is best remembered for by his fans, however. While English has become a recognisable figure thanks to his success in the entertainment industry, he insists he doesn’t mind stopping and talking to fans. “You just take that in your stride, it’s not a big deal. If someone wants an autograph or a chat, it’ll take you two minutes to sort of stand there and get a photo or a selfie... but if you

Everyone booked a live band... you got to play live a lot as Judas Iscariot in the Australian cast of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’. The role is one of his most famous and defining, though at the time that he appeared in the musical, English had no proper acting experience. “I just loved the album... I just loved it, the idea of it, the music and the sound of it, the fact that it was a rock album, it wasn’t the old musical theatre that we seemed to have gone back to,” he said. “I just went down to audition to see what it would be like and one thing led to another and I got the gig.” Despite his lack of theatrical experience, English was spectacular in the role and went on to numerous other acting gigs over his career, including on television with the critically acclaimed historical mini-series ‘Against the Wind’. Perhaps the hit comedy show ‘All Together

tell one person ‘no I’m sorry, I’m too busy’ or ‘I don’t take photos’, it’s amazing how fast your rep will get out,” he said. Over the past few years, English has been busy at work with his rock tribute concerts and penning musical shows ‘Paris’, which is available on iTunes, and ‘Buskers and Angels’ but he is still most known for his TV work. “Television is still the popular medium, people come up to me because I’m not on television at the moment and think I’m out of work,” he said.

Jon English will perform his show ‘Trilogy of Rock’ at the EVAN Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Friday, September 20 at 8pm. Tickets are $41.50. For bookings or more information, call 4720 5555 or visit www.penrith.panthers.com.au.

COSENTINO THE GREAT ILLUSIONIST

P

repare to be thrilled when Cosentino, one of the world’s most talented magicians, comes to Sydney. The world-renowned, awardwinning illusionist will wow audiences with his ‘The Magic, The Mystery, The Madness’ tour, with shows being held at The Star, Sydney on Saturday, November 16 and Sunday, November 17. This will be Cosentino’s first national tour since 2012, when he embarked on his wildly successful ‘Distortions Tour’ and performed to more than 70, 000 people. Fans should expect a similarly dazzling show this time around, with Cosentino promising an impressive show. “I’ve been working so hard to build this amazing new show and cannot wait to go on tour and share the magic with believers across the country,” he said. Since his last tour, Cosentino has seen a surge in popularity due to his successful prime time TV special ‘The Magic, The Mystery, The Madness’, which was aired on Channel Seven

earlier this year. It was watched by 1.6 million viewers, making it the most watched entertainment program the night it aired, as Australians tuned in to see Cosentino attempting spectacular new illusions, death defying escapes and his most dangerous stunts yet. Cosentino has a global reputation for his work, and is ranked among the likes of highly respected magicians including Criss Angel, David Blaine and David Copperfield. He is the only Australian to have ever won the prestigious Merlin Award for the Most Original International Magician, and is the country’s leader in illusionist shows. The very talented performer came into the spotlight in 2011, when he was judged runner up in the high rating television show ‘Australia’s Got Talent’. He is also a Guinness World Record holder and was nominated for the Helpmann Awards. His performances have received rave reviews, with the Herald Sun referring to him as

“a supercharged showman”. Cosentino’s show is so intriguing and spectacular, it must be seen to be believed so don’t miss the chance to witness his acts of illusion live.

Cosentino will perform at The Star, Sydney on Saturday, November 16 and Sunday, November 17. Tickets start from $79. 90. For bookings or more information, visit www. ticketek.com.au.

programs including ‘Getaway’, ‘The Flying Doctors’, ‘Spicks and Specks’ and ‘Sale of the Century’. After their TV success, both Holden and Wilde are ready to light up the stage again.

Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wilde will perform at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, September 20 at 8pm. Tickets are $30. For bookings or more information, call 9625 5500 or visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

HOLDEN AND WILDE REUNITE

W

hile Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wilde may have first hit the charts 40 years ago, they’re set to prove that they’ve still got what it takes to get a crowd going. The rock musicians, who first performed together in the multi-platinum Australian band Ol’ 55, will be reunited on stage to play all their greatest hits at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, September 20. Enjoying their heyday in the 1970’s, Ol’ 55 were a popular band that played classic, retro rock and roll music, with their songs bringing a feel of 50’s nostalgia to listeners. The charismatic Holden was the vocalist and fronted the band, while Wilde was the saxophonist. Their debut album ‘Take It Greasy’ was released in 1976 and peaked at number two on the charts, and the band went on to make seven more albums. Ol’ 55 had a string of original songs including ‘On the Prowl’, ‘Skateboard Thrills’, ‘(Feels Like A) Summer’s Night’, ‘Time to Rock

n’ Roll’, ‘Stay (While the Night is Young)’ and ‘Let’s Do It’. Other singles they released were covers of popular songs such as Paul Anka’s ‘Diana’, Dion and the Belmonts’ ‘Why Must I Be a Teenager in Love?’, Kenny Vance’s ‘Looking for an Echo’, and The Spaniels’ ‘Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite’. After both Holden and Wilde left the band in the late 70’s, they embarked upon different projects in the entertainment industry. Holden released a debut solo single, ‘My Right of Way’, while Wilde joined Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons. They also each found fame on the small screen, with Holden showing off his acting skills in a range of television dramas including ‘Prisoner’, ‘Round the Twist’, ‘Police Rescue’ and ‘Something in the Air’, as well as presenting ‘In Melbourne Tonight’. Wilde used his musical talents as part of the house band on the beloved show ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’, and also appeared in other

P

arents who are hoping their kids grow up to be musical virtuosos can inspire and nurture their minds with ‘Babies Proms: The Four Seasons’. This high quality children’s event will bring stunning classical music performed with children in mind, to the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre next month on Friday, October 4. Presented by CDP Productions and the Sydney Opera House, this production unites some of the city’s best musicians for a concert that will introduce children to classical music in a fun and entertaining manner. ‘The Four Seasons’ is Vivaldi’s best-known and most beloved work, and is also one of the most popular pieces of Baroque music to have ever been written. ot off the success of their previous hit movie franchise ‘Cars’, animation studio Pixar have rehashed the concept for the new film ‘Planes’. The movie focuses on Dusty, a young, ambitious crop duster plane who spends his days working at a cornfield but secretly dreams of one day achieving glory as a racer. His friends and colleagues mock his goals, with the exception of his fuel truck buddy Chug who supports him. Together, Dusty and Chug decide to train and enter the qualifier for the Wings Across the World race, and although Dusty does better than expected, he still only places sixth and falls short of qualifying. Luckily, the entrant ahead of Dusty is caught cheating with an illegal fuel enhancement and the excited crop duster replaces him in the race. As he embarks on the journey of a life time and meets his race competitors, Dusty must face up to his fears and prove his talent while making new friends along the way.

ans of the Grand Theft Auto games have been waiting, and now their anguish is finally over as the fifth installment of this cult classic series has been released. Set in the fictional city of Los Santos, which was based on Los Angeles, ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ is packed with all the same fast cars, high stakes and money-chasing criminal activity of its predecessors along with some extra fun features and great graphics. The game is played through three shady characters who the player alternates between: retired bank robber Michael, his drug addled partner in crime Trevor, and repo man Franklin. The trio unite in an attempt to pull off a slew of heists, but although there’s big rewards for their efforts, there’s also a lot of risk as they need to make clean escapes and avoid the police at all costs. Serious players can strategise by choosing characters based on their particular skills and attributes, while those who are simply after some lawbreaking fun are able to run riot in Los Santos with high-powered weapons.

t’s regarded as one of the greatest classic Disney animated films of all time, and now ‘The Little Mermaid’ is being re-released in 3D on DVD and Blu-Ray. This classic film, first released for the big screen in 1989, is an interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairytale about a mermaid who longs to be human. Beautiful mermaid Ariel, daughter of the powerful King Triton, has all the riches and luxury anyone could ever desire but has always wanted to explore the world on land. When traveling to the water’s surface, Ariel sees the handsome Prince Eric celebrating his birthday but disaster strikes when a storm knocks Eric unconscious. Ariel saves Eric but the experience changes Ariel, and leaves her even more dissatisfied with her underwater life. Her desires are so strong that she makes a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, trading her beautiful voice for a set of legs and lungs that let her live as a human for three days but with a catch.

Dallas is a talented singer who can also play the fiddle, mandolin, acoustic guitar and banjo, and shows off her musical skills on her album. The first song to be released is ‘Me’, which is a highly personal country track that Dallas was inspired to write about her life. “I was busy writing my record when I heard Ed Sheeran’s album, I really wanted to write a song that summed up me, and that’s when I sat in the comfort zone of my messy bedroom with my Dad and wrote this song,” Dallas said. ‘Dancing with a Ghost’ also features tracks that were co-written by artists including Busby Marou, country star

Bill Chambers and young musician Kelly Menhennet. With Dallas’ amazing musical talent and lively personality, this album reveals an impressive newcomer to the industry and will be a surefire hit with country music fans.

PETER’S PASSION FOR THE AUSSIE PRODUCT by David Ellis

P

eter Logan is a passionate Aussie, and the more-so when it comes to the product of our own home-grown wineries, because as he says, “with some of the most interesting, excellent value, and even quirkiest wines around, why go looking abroad for something to stand out from the crowd?” His own Logan label made from fruit from Mudgee and Orange in the Central Ranges of NSW provides great examples of what he is talking about. A 2011 Logan Weemala Merlot, for instance, at just $18 is a wonderfully quaffable drop with all the necessities to team-up with a whole range of food choices – especially tomato based Italian dishes. Aussie wine drinkers, as Peter says, are becoming increasingly educated and adventurous with their wine choices, and ‘imported’ doesn’t necessarily mean more exotic, nor does it necessarily equate to ‘better’. This 2011 Logan Weemala Merlot brims

ou certainly won’t leave Outback Steakhouse with an empty stomach that is for certain! The meals are of a generous portion, and taste brilliant! Why not try some cheesy fries or a famous Bloomin’ Onion for a starter, and then move on to one of the delicious steaks – we love the Victoria’s Fillet the best! It’s not only steak they do well here, either. The Alice Springs Chicken is one of the best items on the menu and a must try dish for any occasion. with forward plum, mixed berries and thyme flavours and has an enjoyably long finish. At $18 match it with your favourite Italian dishes, or individual-serve Mediterranean herbed chicken en papillote. One to note: Andrew Margan has crafted a ripper drop from fruit off 70-year-old Hunter Valley dryland vines for his 2011 Margan White Label Semillon, a wine that’s a power-house of wonderful fruit flavour and which, having been made in the traditional low-sugar manner, will ensure rewarding cellaring and development over the next 10-20 years. Worth the $35 asking price for enjoyment now with a whole range of chicken, pork, fish or shellfish dishes, this is a Semillon with crisp citrus characters on the nose that follow through beautifully on the palate, which in turn is balanced, crisp and clean. Time in the cellar will see excellent intensification of these fruit characters as this wine matures in typical Hunter Semillon style. It’s worth investing in a bottle for now, and one (or two) for down the track.

Whether it be the delicious Mobster pizza, or something a little more unique and gourmet, Panarotti’s has an awesome, varied menu. There are also pasta, steak and chicken dishes on offer. With a wide selection for the entire family, it’s no wonder Panarottis is one of the leading choices around town for birthday parties, work events or other functions. There’s definitely something here for everyone.

time since 2005. She will become the fourth member of its morning show ‘Studio 10’. Lastly, Ten has re-launched the ‘Eyewitness News’ brand with live streaming of its news “anywhere, anytime, on any device”. ‘Eyewitness News’ hasn’t been seen on Ten since the 1970’s.

CHATTER ON THE BOX with Nathan Taylor

T

here’s been plenty of action over in the Channel Ten news department this past week, so let’s get you up to speed. Firstly, one of the best young television journalists in Australia right now, Hamish MacDonald, has quit the network. Hamish has been a huge part of Ten’s news line-up over the past few years, most recently reviving its Late News plus hosting his own show ‘The Truth Is’, so his sudden departure is somewhat of a surprise. No doubt Hamish has something big in the works. Still with Ten, someone who is returning to the network after nearly a decade on the other channels is Jessica Rowe. The ‘Weekend Sunrise’ newsreader will return to Ten for the first

With the show set to end next month, ‘Breaking Bad’ fans will soon have something else to look forward to with news the hugely popular program will get a spin-off series. Titled ‘Better Call Saul’, the series will serve as a prequel and centre on Saul Goodman, the attorney that eventually becomes Walter White’s lawyer. It’s understood the show has been in the works for a while and will be less dark than its successor with splashes of comedy. Channel Nine are copping it hard from viewers of ‘Weekend Today’ after popular American entertainment correspondent Michelle Mahone was axed from the program. While I’ll admit Mahone’s Kentucky accent did annoy the hell out of me, she was a staple of the program and was funny on occasion. Last weekend the show used a local entertainment reporter in studio, which didn’t quite hit the mark in my opinion. Channel Nine won’t be happy that their big budget, hugely hyped series ‘Power Games: The Packer-Murdoch Story’ bombed. The second and final episode only managed to hit 773,000 viewers, down 20,000 from the previous week. Nine had huge hopes for the series on the back of last year’s Kerry Packer

drama ‘Howzat’ but it seems viewers didn’t share that same passion for Kerry’s father Frank. In some better news for Nine it has secured the IronMan and IronWoman Series from January next year. The 2014 series will be shorter and faster than previous events, with races conducted at three new locations starting in Margaret River in Western Australia. Lastly, just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be anymore pawn shows, two more popped up on A&E last week. Let’s

start with the bad one, ‘Pawn Stars UK’. The production values were poor, the staff were boring, the items weren’t interesting, the pawn shop itself was isolated in the middle of nowhere and don’t get me started on the accents. On a brighter note, I did very much enjoy the spin-off series ‘Hardcore Pawn Chicago’. It’s similar to its Detroit-based predecessor where the customers are the stars of the show, not so much the items they bring in. ‘Hardcore Pawn Chicago’ airs Tuesday nights at 7.30pm and ‘Pawn Stars UK’ airs Wednesday nights at 9.30pm on channel A&E.

TAKING PRIDE IN A WALK WITH THE PANTHERA LEO by David Ellis

T

aking the dog for a walk isn’t quite what it used to be: she’s had her hackles up ever since springing us showing friends a video of a walk we had with a cat. But try explaining to a highly-sensitive miniature poodle who’s got a half dozen other breeds mangled through her genes, together with an intellect she believes is superior to ours, that the cat you were walking with was in fact Panthera Leo – the African Lion – and that she should therefore look up to us in admiration of our bravery and daring, instead of our poodle’s scowls of disdain. To her we are simply wimps who not only went for a walk with a cat, but worse still had to have guides with us to do so, and great big sticks in case kitty decided to get frisky. So we’ve accepted it’s little wonder she’s got her hackles up as she wrestles with her new-found situation of living with those who are scared of cats. But while she sulks, at least human friends and family marvel at our perceived courage: it’s not every day one goes for a walk in the African bush with an unleashed lion at their side, and we’re going to dine out on it for as

long as we can. Lion Encounter where we engaged in this bravado is an extraordinary conservation program in Zimbabwe helping to re-build numbers of the African lion, whose population across the continent has plunged from 200,000 in 1980, to under 30,000 today – with Kenya, experts fear, having no lions left in the wild in five years. The reasons are many: hunting, human encroachment by way of cities and farms into the one-time domains of these kings of the jungle, feline AIDS and feline TB, and a testicular disease that’s dramatically slashed male lion’s breeding rates. And bizarrely another contributing factor is that lions are actually bad mothers: they’ll readily abandon sick and weaker cubs, leaving them to die or fall victim to other beasts. Lion Encounter is part of the larger African Lion Rehabilitation and Release into the Wild Program that raises young cubs found sick or abandoned in the bush, or which are specially bred for the program at Zimbabwe’s Antelope Park lion breeding centre. The cubs spend their first three to 18

months at Lion Encounter, just outside Victoria Falls township. They are taken out daily into the bush with staff and paying visitors to become familiar with their natural environment, and to develop and hone stalking and hunting skills. And amazingly the cubs accept their human companions as being part of the pride. Organisers behind the scheme are quick to point out the important role of visitors in both helping the young animals become used to their surrounds while daily refining their natural predator instincts, and also through contributing much-needed funds for the maintenance of the program. Last year alone over 10,000 visitors – 15 per cent of them from Australia – took part in a ‘Walk with the Lions’ at Lion Encounter. When they reach 18 months the young lions are moved to a 400ha enclosed “safe zone” with no human contact, and after a year there learning to live by their wits (and with occasional supplemental carcass droppings to help them along), are moved as a pride to yet another much larger bush area where they will spend the rest of their lives in the wild.

Their cubs in turn will come up in a totally natural environment, and when mature enough will be trapped and relocated to other parts of Africa needing to re-stock their depleted wild lion populations. Two lions we walked with at Lion Encounter, sisters Thuli and Thembi, reach 18 months of age this month, and will be moved to the 400ha “safe zone” and their eventual cubs relocated in several years’ time to where they will be needed. And new cubs will be recruited into the Lion Encounter Walking with the Lions program, where the whole cycle will begin all over again. For more information about holidaying in Africa and Walking with the Lions, contact Bench International on toll-free 1300AFRICA or go to www.benchinternational.com.au. During more than 40 years of taking Australians to Africa Bench International has created a number of links with organisations devoted to the welfare of the African people, wildlife and environment. GIVEAWAY: PROPERTY ADVICE

f you’ve got your sights set on being a property tycoon one day, then take some advice from the experts and read the new book that is shocking the real estate industry. How To Buy A House for A Dollar was written by Rick Otton, a real estate consumer advocate who has personally created wealth and amassed an impressive property portfolio for himself. In 1991, Otton uncovered an innovative new strategy for navigating the real estate market and amassed 76 properties within a year. Now, for the first time, he is sharing his secrets to success and unveiling the powerful real estate investing formulas that made him so much wealth in so little time. Anyone who wants to purchase their first home or build up a property portfolio that isn’t dependent upon bank financing can use Otton’s formulas and wisdom. The groundbreaking book tackles a range of issues and makes property buying understandable for anyone, and claims to help teach readers how to buy a property for just one dollar, without needing a deposit or bank loan.

Other topics addressed include: the secret of turning a negatively geared property into positive cash flow, why you never need to stress about interest rates or the economy, how to find positive cash flow properties, the best way to find 10 times more buyers if you sell your property and how to join the new group of first home owners and real estate millionaires. And the best part? You can do all this without risking your own money. Rick Otton has been coaching people on the real estate industry since 2001 and has been featured on a variety of television and radio shows including ‘A Current Affair’, ‘Today Tonight’, SBS, ABC, ‘Hot Property’ and newspapers and magazines. His book How To Buy A House for a Dollar promises to help newcomers to the real estate industry successfully purchase a home and build up a portfolio without having to deal with excessive burdens and hurdles from banks. If you think it sounds too good to be true, then you had better start reading because you are going to be very surprised with what Rob Otton has in store for you!

W WENDELL SAILOR: CROSSING THE LINE By Wendell Sailor and Jimmy Thomson

E

veryone knows the scandalous tabloid tales of Wendell Sailor’s fall from grace, but few people know the true story behind the headlines. Keen to set the record straight, Sailor has collaborated with author Jimmy Thomson to release Crossing the Lines, a book that explores the sporting hero’s life and career so far. Sailor first exploded onto the sporting scene at the tender age of 18, when he was signed to play for the Brisbane Broncos and quickly proved his worth as he became their star winger. He was then selected for the national Kangaroos side, and played league until 2001 when he made an unexpected move to rugby union, shocking fans. His career kept reaching new heights when he was chosen to play for the Wallabies, but the fantasy came crashing down in 2006 when he tested positive for cocaine use while playing for the Waratahs, leading to him being banned from the game for the next two years. During this time, Sailor struggled in the most difficult period of his life as the former party boy had to face up to his problems and do some soul-searching. Rather than spiral into depression, Sailor worked to redeem himself by volunteering with charities and mentoring young people in community based drug and alcohol

awareness programs. After the ban expired, Sailor returned to his original code of NRL and joined the St George Illawarra Dragons, determined to work hard for his team and sport until his final game in 2010. His final game was for the Indigenous All Stars. While Crossing the Lines is a story of the trials and tribulations of being a sportsperson, it also delves into Sailor’s life and reveals a dark secret that has been with him since his childhood, as well as tackling issues such as racism. The book also presents the importance of family and friends, and how close bonds and relationships can help humans when they are struggling in life. Jimmy Thomson, who collaborated on this great read, is an author, journalist and scriptwriter. His other books include Watto, the biography of cricketer Shane Watson, Tunnel Rats, about the exploits of army engineers in the Vietnam War, and Snitch, true crime in Sydney’s King’s Cross. This latest work won’t disappoint League and sports fans. FYI has five copies of Crossing the Lines to give away. For your chance to win, email the code word ‘LINES’ to competitions@westernweekender.com. au with your name and phone number. Entries close Wednesday, September 25. BRIGHT START TO SPRING AT LOCAL FESTIVAL

A

WW4942

ll of the focus on September 7 may have been on the Federal Election, but in St Marys it was an afterthought, with the annual St Marys Spring Festival being the top priority. The annual event was again a huge hit, drawing in great crowds. The event has been hit hard by the weather in years gone by but this year, bright sunshine equalled a big, happy crowd with plenty of families coming out to enjoy the festivities of the day. There was plenty of games and rides for the kids, and a variety of stalls selling a whole range of goodies. The entertainment was non-stop with great performers, vintage car displays and a whole heap more. The St Marys Spring Festival is the biggest day on the calendar in St Marys and showcases the vibrant nature of the area. It brings together different cultures all under the one banner to celebrate St Marys and what it represents. And yes, the Festival will be back again in 2014!
