IT’S NOT SESAME STREET
SHANNON COCHRANE discovers that new production, ‘Avenue Q’ is a lot edgier and risque than its cute and fuzzy stars let on as performer Jordan Vassallo explains the ins and outs of working with puppets...
N
ew production, ‘Avenue Q’ may feature adorable puppets but don’t be fooled by the cute-factor – this hilarious, risque musical is anything but ‘Sesame Street’. The show, which has enjoyed cult status on Broadway, will be coming to the west when the Penrith Musical Comedy Company present their production of ‘Avenue Q’. After auditions in June and five long months of rehearsal, the cast are gearing up for opening night at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Friday, October 18. With a mix of human and puppet characters, ‘Avenue Q’ uses naughty humour and a heartfelt storyline to explore universal themes and issues, from sex and love to drinking and politics. The plot focuses on college graduate Princeton, who moves to a shabby apartment in the Big Apple but becomes disillusioned with his prospects. Living on Avenue Q, Princeton meets a host of weird and wonderful neighbours with their own problems, from girl-next-door Kate to the odd couple Rod and Nicky, to internet sexpert Trekkie and more. Always a crowd-pleaser, ‘Avenue Q’ has won the Tony Award for Best Musical, Best

Score and Best Book – and its catchy songs, such as ‘It Sucks To Be Me’ and ‘Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist’, never fail to delight audiences. Performer Jordan Vassallo, who plays the role of Nicky, said that the musical is guaranteed to make people laugh. “‘Avenue Q’ is a musical like nothing you’ve seen. Having the puppets and live actors on stage at the same time creates a really interesting dynamic. It’s hilarious, it taps into that childlike memory of ‘Sesame Street’ and puts an adult twist with quite naughty humour, which is great,” he said. Although ‘Avenue Q’ stars a range of cute characters, the show is undoubtedly geared towards adults and tackles a range of mature issues, making it a puppet show that’s definitely not appropriate for children. “It’s definitely not for kids, it’s billed as not for kids. It really comes down to parental discretion, personally I’d say anyone over 16 would love it and actually get the humour, and that’s the most important thing, getting the jokes in it. There is swearing, there is puppet nudity so it’s obviously not for everyone but it’s definitely funny,” Vassallo said. But despite its more mature target audience, ‘Avenue Q’ did source some inspiration from children’s entertainment,

with the basic premise being based on the television show ‘Sesame Street’. The rumour that ‘Sesame Street’ characters Bert and Ernie are secretly lovers is given credence in ‘Avenue Q’, with gay partners Rod and Nicky forming an odd couple that mirrors the ‘Sesame Street’ roommates. “Rod and Nicky live together and they’re very loosely based on the characters of Bert and Ernie from ‘Sesame Street’, so very funny, very, very good characters. When I first heard the soundtrack and saw the musical myself, Nicky was always the character I dreamed of playing if I ever got the chance,” Vassallo said of his role.
talented actors from Sydney such as Simon Dane, Fiona Brennan, Rob Hall, Grant Jones, Kat Shaw and others. Vassallo, who also works as a bank manager, has been in the entertainment industry for 13 years working as an actor and is currently the President of Holroyd Musical Society. He said that community theatre groups such as Penrith Musical Comedy Company were incredibly significant in helping young people get involved with drama and performance. “It’s such an important vehicle for young actors, performers, theatre makers to be
There is swearing, there is puppet nudity... it is definitely funny! Unlike most musicals, ‘Avenue Q’ is unique for its use of puppets, which can be a challenging experience for thespians who are used to having their full range of facial expressions and body movement to express emotions on stage. “Because you have no facial expression or smile, you have to really adapt hand movements, gestures, speed, the way that you say lines to tell the story, since a face can’t. The good thing is in ‘Avenue Q’ we don’t hide the puppet performers, we’re there live and you actually start to feel the connection when the live actors are working with you,” Vassallo explained. On top of a providing great entertainment, ‘Avenue Q’ gives local performers the chance to shine on stage, with the cast featuring many

Penrith has a great niche market where it has an excellent venue in the Joan Sutherland, a really passionate creative team and committee and they’re constantly putting on productions that appeal to younger generations... they’re choosing shows that the youth will want to do,” he said.
‘Avenue Q’ will run at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre from Friday, October 18 until Saturday, October 26. Tickets are $30 for concession or $35 for adults. For a full list of performance dates, or to book, visit www.jspac.com.au or call 4723 7600.

Williamson will delight fans when he performs on Saturday, October 26, joining 14 other great artists that are attending the weekend. Despite beginning his career 43 years ago, Williamson has remained popular and relevant throughout the decades, with his strongly Australian-influenced country music capturing the hearts of generations of listeners. His first real hit, ‘Old Man Emu’, was written in 1970 and although Williamson considered it to be a “silly” song, it was number one on the charts for five weeks and became a classic. Other well-known songs from Williamson
include ‘Cootamundra Wattle’, ‘True Blue’, ‘Rip Rip Woodchip’, ‘Raining on the Rock’, ‘Salisbury Street’, ‘Winter Green’, ‘Galleries of Pink Galahs’ and ‘Hawkesbury River Lovin’. These releases make up just a fraction of Williamson’s catalogue, with the prolific songwriter having penned more than 400 songs throughout his life. In recognition of his influence on the Australian country music industry, Williamson has won many awards including three ARIAs, 24 Golden Guitars, MO Awards, APRA Awards and even an induction into the prestigious ARIA Hall of Fame. As popular with music lovers as he is with critics, Williamson has had many platinum and gold albums and sold more than four million albums. Last year, he released ‘The Big Red’, which was his first all original album in four years, which has been received well by his fans. On top of his music, Williamson has also been very active in Australian cultural
events, having participated in the 2011 Rugby League Grand Final, the Sydney Olympics, the Bledisloe Cup, Sir Donald Bradman’s memorial, and Steve Irwin’s memorial to name a few. With almost five decades in the entertainment industry, John Williamson is a country music legend whose performances are guaranteed to wow country music fans.

ERIC BOGLE’S SAVE MY SUPER TOUR
E
ric Bogle is probably best known for his song ‘The Band Played Waltzing Matilda’, which confirmed its iconic status by appearing as a question in the Australian version of Trivial Pursuit! But he is far from being a one-hit wonder. Some of his other songs like ‘No Man’s Land (The Green Fields of France)’, ‘Leaving Nancy’, ‘Now I’m Easy’, ‘Shelter’, ‘My Youngest Son Came Home Today’ and ‘If Wishes were Fishes’ are now beginning to rival “Matilda” in the icon stakes. In 2010, after years of non-stop touring throughout North America, Europe, Britain and Australia, Eric embarked on what was to be his fi nal tour. After realising that his retirement fund was taking a beating the former accountant decided enough was enough and is hitting the road in October and November 2013 on ‘The SMS Tour. SMS? Save My Superannuation’. Eric will be playing his most well known songs and much loved fan favourites along
with music from his recently released 15th album ‘Toss Of The Coin’. A collaboration with long time musical cohort John Munro, this new album testifies that whilst Eric now confines his touring to Australia and New Zealand he has not given up song-writing and recording. This album takes a slightly different direction to his most recent recordings in that Eric sings 10 of the songs, while John Munro not only contributes two new songs but sings them as well. As usual, Eric’s songs reflect the times we live in and recent world events. Eric Bogle’s songs have been recorded by artists as varied as Joan Baez, Mary Black, Donovan, Slim Dusty, John Williamson, The Dubliners, Peter Paul and Mary, Billy Bragg, The Pogues and The Dropkick Murphy’s just to name a few. The Fureys’ rendition of ‘No Man’s Land (Green Fields of France)’ spent 26 weeks on the Irish music charts, including 10 weeks at the number one position.
A recipient of an Order of Australia Medal for services to the entertainment industry Eric was also awarded a United Nations Peace Medal for his efforts, through music, to
promote peace and racial harmony. Eric Bogle plays at the EVAN Theatre at Panthers tonight – Friday, October 18. Visit their website for details.
loved by plenty of fans, getting the inspiration for his work isn’t as effortless as it seems. “I can’t sit down and just write stand-up, I’m not able to do that, I have to allow myself to
daydream, that’s a huge part of it,” he said. Tommy Tiernan will perform at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday, October 20 at 7pm and 9.30pm. Tickets from $59 to $69.90.
TIERNAN’S HERE JUST FOR LAUGHS

nown in his homeland of Ireland for his outrageous, boundary-pushing humour, Tommy Tiernan is set to bring his comedy to Sydney. The comedian will be visiting down under for the fourth time as part of the Just For Laughs festival, performing at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday, October 20. Tiernan is incredibly popular in Ireland, where he has the highest selling DVD sales and is second only to U2 in terms of live performance ticket sales. His stand-up shows are intense and take audiences on a rollercoaster ride of humour as Tiernan uses his comedy to tackle big issues and ideas, including sex, religion and family. As well as his stand-up shows, Tiernan has presented on Irish radio, guest starred in ‘Father Ted’ and appeared on shows in the US including ‘Late Show with David Letterman’. He became a record holder in 2009, when he set the Guinness World Record for having the longest stand-up comedy show by an
individual with a performance of 36 hours and 15 minutes at Galway’s Nuns Island, although this was later broken by other comedians. Sydney audiences should prepare for a hilarious, no holds barred night with Tiernan promising plenty of laughter. “They can expect an hour long sermon extolling the virtues of 13th century Catholic monasticism. Plus jokes,” he said. Tiernan will be joined by many other talented comedians at the Just For Laughs Festival, including Rob Schneider, Kathy Griffin, Mark Watson, Dave Thornton and Colin and Brad, saying he was looking forward to seeing other talent. “I’d have a few beers with them all and there’s usually one or two guys that I would have heard of… I listen to a lot of comedy, I don’t tend to watch comedy DVDs or anything… so there are guys that I would never, ever get the chance to see outside of a festival,” he said. omantic comedy queen Rachel McAdams returns to the screen for another touching love story, this time playing the shy but sweet girlfriend of a time traveler. Protagonist Tim Lake, played by Domhnall Gleeson, is told by his father when he turns 21 that the male members of his family have always had the unusual ability to time travel. After a rather disappointing New Year’s Eve party, Tim decides to use his powers to change his life for the better, but his search for a girlfriend goes abysmally until he meets Mary (McAdams), and falls in love. Unfortunately, his happiness is shortlived as his time traveling escapades keep interfering with their relationship and Tim must continually go back to the past and try to fix his mistakes. As he gets older and begins a family with Mary, Tim gradually learns that while his gift might give him the chance to do things over, it cannot prevent the ups and downs that all families face throughout life. It’s a perfect chick flick that mixes humour with emotion.

he wildly hilarious Hangover trilogy has finally drawn to an end, with the third installment of the popular franchise being released on DVD. The boys of the wolf pack are headed out on another wacky adventure, but unlike the previous films that were based around the lead up to a wedding, ‘The Hangover Part III’ brings a fresh new plotline. The movie is still packed with hilarity focused on the crazy antics of Phil, Alan and Stu but this time, the trio are headed off to Mexico to take Alan to a psychiatrist hospital after he stops taking his medication and begins acting even more erratically than he usually does. In typical Hangover style, the road trip ends up being a complicated task as the boys get themselves involved in loads of trouble along the way. After getting mixed up with a dangerous drug dealer, the gang have to track down their old buddy Mr Chow and try to get him to return the millions of dollars he has in his possession. EASY READ INTO WINE’S LITTLE MYSTERIES by David Ellis
M
any books about wine have come our way over the years, their publishers all assuring us that each is the absolute, ultimate guide to understanding wine. But amongst the best we’ve seen yet is the just-released A Top Drop – and not only because of the huge field it covers, but because it is written in an easy to understand style to help everyone from the novice wine enthusiast, to the more-seasoned buyer, to get the most enjoyment and value out of buying, cellaring and sharing wine. In some 239 pages authors Ian Bailey (a wine teacher and lecturer) and Ian Powrie (a major wine industry investor) have covered an astonishing 400 topics ranging from wine varieties grown in Australia, what flavours to expect in those varieties and thus what wines best match what foods, how best to cellar and store your wines, why some wines should be decanted, the reasoning behind different glassware for different wines, what to expect
when a wine is described as ‘zingy’, ‘corky’, ‘charry’ or ‘creamy’ and more. And they talk about temperatures at which different varietals should be served for best flavour enjoyment – including some reds that can come out of the fridge – and to assist the novices and those who are not regular wine imbibers, a section recommends a selection of different brands of major varieties across different price brackets. Published by New Holland Publishing, A Top Drop is just $19.95 and an excellent thought for Christmas for family or friends keen to broaden their wine knowledge. One to note: Local Liquor Stores have a ripper Barking Tree Shiraz from Western Australia’s Margaret River that at just $14.99 is wonderfully spicy, has a typical Shiraz peppery edge and by contrast nice soft cherry fruit on the palate. With these beautifully forward flavours this wine is an ideal match with lamb shanks or osso bucco.
enrith just got funky! If you’re looking for a relaxing weekend breakfast, or a quick snack, the very snappy Henri Marc could well be the answer to your dining dilemmas. Located in Memory Park in the Penrith CBD, Henri Marc’s menu changes daily, so your experience will always be varied. As long as the beautiful milkshakes are on the menu, we’re happy! Pancakes, a variety of egg-based dishes, chorizo-inspired items and a whole heap more… Henri Marc is simply stunning and certainly very different from the run of the mill cafes you’ll find around the place.

ith the 2013 Rugby League World Cup just one week away, Channel Seven have released more details about the upcoming broadcast. The coverage will begin exclusively live on 7Mate at midnight on Saturday, October 26 and will be hosted by classy sports reporter Ryan Phelan. 7Mate will cover all 28 games of the tournament which takes place in England and Wales over 22 days. There will be a half-hour pre-game show before each match, with every Australian game, the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final also replayed on 7mate on Sunday
If you’re into nature docos you’ll be pleased with this news. Channel Ten has just acquired a whole stack of David Attenborough documentaries from the BBC, which they are set to air over the coming months. Titles include the new three-part series ‘Hidden Kingdoms’, ‘David Attenborough’s Natural Curiosities’, ‘Attenborough’s Ark’ as well as stand-alone docos called ‘Giant Otters of the Amazon’, ‘Snow Babies’, ‘Living with Baboons’ and ‘Operation Iceberg’. ‘The X-Files’ finished as one of the most successful sci-fi series of all time when it ended in 2002. Since its inception in 1993, there has already been two ‘X-Files’ movies produced and now there is some chatter a third may be on the cards. It’s been confirmed the creator Chris Carter is in, so is the show’s stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, all the movie now needs to get off the ground is for Twentieth Century Fox to give it the go ahead. The 2008 movie ‘The X-Files: I Want To Believe’ made US$68 million at the worldwide box office, which is a major flop by today’s
standards. Fans of Channel Seven’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’ will be happy with the news the series has been picked up for a full season. Thanks to good ratings in the US, the Marvel action series has been extended from 13 episodes to 22 episodes. The series currently airs on Wednesdays at 7.30pm. Two other shows were also renewed recently including ‘Teen Wolf’ which has won a fourth season of 12 episodes, and ‘The Late
Show with David Letterman’ which has been extended to 2015. In a statement 68-year-old Letterman said: “I needed a little more time to fully run the show into the ground”. Classic Dave! Lastly, the cast of ‘That ‘70s Show’ reunited last week and gathered around a piano to sing the show’s theme song. Popular cast member Wilmer Valderrama Instagramed the photo which went instantly viral around the world. ‘That ‘70s Show’ ended in 2006 and ran for eight seasons.

A NIGHT WITH THE LION MAN
ften referred to as ‘The Lion Whisperer, zoologist Kevin Richardson has amazed millions around the world with his close kinship with big cats. The South African has become internationally known for his ability to be accepted into the prides of lions and make otherwise ferocious big cats purr. But although Richardson has become famous for his love of lions, the animal behaviourist is spending time bringing awareness to another critically endangered animal – the Painted Dog. He will be visiting Australia for three exclusive events to fundraise for Painted Dog Conservation Inc, with Sydney-siders getting the chance to meet Richardson on Thursday, November 7 at the Taronga Zoo Function Centre. The Painted Dog is found in Africa and was once widespread across the continent but has since been reduced to a small population due to threats from farmers, habitat loss and diseases caught from domestic dogs. Richardson is an esteemed zoologist who has become somewhat of a celebrity thanks to the footage and documentaries of his time living among
lions, where he was amazingly accepted as part of their family. His groundbreaking studies involved challenging many of the perceptions that humans previously held about working alongside animals; and rather than use force or fear to subdue them, Richardson created a bond of love and understanding between himself and the lions. This amazing, accomplished man will be exclusively speaking at Taronga Zoo, with ticket costs covering guests’ food and beverages and a signed copy of Richardson’s book Part of the Pride. Richardson will discuss his adventures in the wild, his close encounters with animals and his important conservation work, and there will also be a silent auction where people can bid for the rare prize of a week of volunteering at Richardson’s facility in South Africa. ‘An Evening with Kevin Richardson’ will be held at the Harbourview Terrace Room, Taronga Zoo Function Centre on Thursday, November 7 at 7pm. Tickets are $150 each and include a signed copied of Richardson’s book. For bookings visit www. painteddogconservation.iinet.net.au.

COOK: FROM SAILOR TO LEGEND By Rob Mundle
C
aptain James Cook will forever be remembered in history as one of the founders of Australia, and his story is being revealed in stunning detail in a new biography. Known as one of the greatest maritime explorers of all time, Captain James Cook discovered new countries and set the stage for the development of the new world, standing in a class of feted explorers such as Christopher Columbus and Vasco da Gama. In three amazing voyages into the Pacific in the later half of the 18th century, Cook unveiled the centuries-old mystery of the existence of a great southern land, Terra Australis Incognita. He was also the first person to circumnavigate New Zealand and demonstrate it was made up of two main islands, and also discovered the Hawaiian Islands. Now, in Rob Mundle’s new biography Cook: From Sailor to Legend, the secrets of this accomplished explorer’s life are laid bare for modern readers – from his childhood, to his rough years at sea and eventual achievements as an explorer. Cook’s passion for exploration began as a teenage dream, and took him to all corners of the globe, giving him a legendary status among his contemporaries. Through his hard-earned skills as a seafarer, his knowledge from being a self-taught navigator and surveyor
and a natural talent for leadership, Cook was a highly successful explorer whose work helped change the shape of the world as society knew it more than any other man. Author Rob Mundle is well-known for his writing on sailing, and is an internationally recognised author, journalist, commentator, competitive sailor and community figure. Over his career, he has written 11 books including the acclaimed Bligh and Flinders, while his bestseller Fatal Storm was published in six different languages and sold more than 200,000 copies. His writing skills and intimate knowledge of sailing are put to excellent use in his latest book Cook, which illuminates the life of one of the most significant historical figures who literally put Australia on the map. Written with colour, this extensively researched new biography of Cook will put you on the quarterdeck with the great navigator as he painstakingly guides his ship through dangerous, reef-strewn waters. You will also be alongside the captain when his ship is a wave-width away from annihilation; and at the helm, when he calls for the anchor to be weighed and his men to heave hard on the lines, at the start of an exciting new voyage. Cook: From Sailor to Legend, is a fantastic read and is available from November 1, 2013 in both hard copy and e-book formats.

KIDS HAD A MONSTER FUN DAY
A
lbeit a scotching spring Sunday, this did not stop Monster Truck fans from turning up at NRMA MotorServe Penrith and being a part of Monster Jam for Charity. Monster Truck fans of all ages from young kids to adults had the opportunity to get up close and personal to the Grave Digger Monster Truck, get their photo taken, meet the real Monster Truck driver and even get his autograph. Young boys wore their favourite Monster Truck Tees and even brought along their toy Monster Trucks. It was a really fun day for all; there was kids entertainment with a clown, Dan Druff, ice cream and a sausage sizzle. NRMA MotorServe Penrith Store Manager Tony Eljiz was handing out $50 OFF vouchers to locals to welcome them back to NRMA MotorServe Penrith to get their car serviced. NRMA also had a raffle going, where participants had the chance to win two VIP Monster Jam passes, one of seven Monster Jam family passes or one of five NRMA MotorServe Essential Car services. The best part of all was that all proceeds went to the Starlight Children’s Foundation, NRMA’s charity partner since 2007, to help brighten the lives of sick children. The day was a roaring success raising over $2,600, with the biggest contribution made from NRMA MotorServe of $1,000. Riëtte Filmer from Starlight’s corporate partnership team thanked everyone for their contribution to help make this event a success. She also especially thanked NRMA MotorServe for their generosity and for hosting this charity on their premises. David Bentham, NRMA Director conducted the lucky draw and announced the names of the 13 winners, which were notified later by phone of their lucky prize. David Bentham said, “It was a fantastic day celebrating and all money raised went directly to the Starlight Children’s Foundation that helps makes a difference to young kids’ lives.”
