SIMPLY THE BEST... EVEN TINA THINKS SO

NATHAN TAYLOR goes one-on-one with the world’s only Tina Turner endorsed tribute performer, Rebecca O’Connor…

T

he reason Rebecca O’Connor sounds, looks and acts like Tina Turner so amazingly well is because she’s been studying her every move for the past 30 years. “I was obsessed with her from the age of seven, I just thought she was an amazing woman,” Rebecca said. “The hair, the legs, the lipstick, the wildness, she was just so powerful, her energy was amazing. I always thought while watching her videos – ‘I want to be like that!’” Tina Turner in her prime was one of the world’s most popular entertainers. Her career has spanned more than 50 years and she was once billed by Rolling Stone magazine as the “Queen of Rock and Roll”. Rebecca’s career took off playing the part of the ‘Nutbush City Limits’ singer after winning a European talent competition in front of 33 million viewers more than a decade ago. “I was doing karaoke shows for years until one day I entered a competition called ‘European Stars In Their Eyes’, which was a show similar to ‘X Factor’, instead you would actually perform mimicking a famous artist,” Rebecca said. “I ended up winning that whole show, I won Europe, and that’s when Tina Turner first saw me... she was amazed by that.” Rebecca’s win was the start of the Irishborn performer’s career and her performance on the show ended up catching the eye of one of music’s most well-known managers. “I went travelling around the world and ended up meeting Dennis Dunstan in Australia, he was the manager of Fleetwood Mac for 23 years,” Rebecca said. “He was like ‘Oh my God, I would never

FYi Issue 110 Editor Troy Dodds Troy.Dodds@mediaview.com.au

Printed at Spot Press Pty Ltd

take on a tribute act normally’, but he just thought I was different.” One thing that’s unique about Rebecca O’Connor’s amazing live shows is that she is the only Tina Turner impersonator in the world that is fully-endorsed by the legendary singer herself. Turner once said: “Rebecca is so good, she’s scary... if I had her energy, I would still be touring today”. Rebecca admits while it’s a true blessing to have Turner’s approval, it also gives her that added element of pressure of having to keep her standard as high as possible when she performs. “I think just to keep up to her level, because she’s endorsing every show that I do, is the tough part,” she said. “I have to do my best every time I’m out on stage because I’m portraying her as such.” The legendary Tina Turner was born in Nutbush, Tennessee almost 73 years ago in 1939. She started out her music career in the early 1960’s with her then husband, Ike Turner. Turner is responsible for some of the biggest rock classics of our time including ‘Proud Mary’, ‘River Deep – Mountain High’, ‘Let’s Stay Together’, ‘Private Dancer’, ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’, ‘We Don’t Need Another Hero’ and ‘The Best’. But one song most Australians can never get enough of is the ultimate party track ‘Nutbush City Limits’. Whilst performing the song in Australia, Rebecca noticed something unusual that Australians do and the rest of the world does not. “When I sing the ‘Nutbush’ the whole place just erupts and everyone does this ‘dance’... but no one else in the world does it,”

Rebecca is so good, she’s scary. If I had her energy, I would still be touring she said. “I got a fright the first time I saw an Australian audience doing it, I was like ‘What the hell is happening?’” Penrith will get the chance to do their own version of the ‘Nutbush’ when Rebecca O’Connor brings her spectacular live show to the EVAN Theatre, Penrith Panthers next Friday night. “It’s a full-on energetic show... I have dancers on stage with me, an amazing live band and we do all of Tina’s hits live, so it’s a real rock and roll show,” Rebecca said. Don’t miss Rebecca O’Connor in her Tina Turner tribute show ‘Simply The Best’ when she performs live at Penrith Panthers next Friday, November 16 at 8pm. Tickets are

$36.50. For more information call 1800 061 991 or visit www.penrith.panthers.com.au.

rom the writer that brought you ‘In Bruges’, ‘Seven Psychopaths’ is a crazy, hilarious new gangster comedy starring Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson and Abbie Cornish. Marty (Farrell) is a struggling writer who dreams of finishing his screenplay, ‘Seven Psychopaths’. Billy (Rockwell) is Marty’s best friend, an unemployed actor and part time dog thief, who wants to help Marty by any means necessary. All he needs is a little focus and inspiration. Hans (Walken) is Billy’s partner in crime – a religious man with a violent past. Charlie (Harrelson) is the psychopathic gangster whose beloved dog has just been stolen by Billy and Hans. Charlie is unpredictable, extremely violent and wouldn’t think twice about killing anyone or anything associated with the theft. Marty will get all the focus and inspiration he needs for his screenplay, just as long as he lives to tell the tale. This movie might not be for everyone, but it is a hell of a ride!

T

he year’s second (and far grittier) Snow White reimagining, ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray. In the epic action-adventure ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, Kristen Stewart plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Charlize Theron) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth). Sam Claflin joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power. This film is a visual masterpiece, with alternating dark and light images that both elicit fear and awestruck wonder. Stewart is not nearly as annoying as she was in the ‘Twilight’ films, Aussie Hemsworth is formidable as the Huntsman, but the most remarkable and powerful performance comes from Theron as the wicked queen, Ravenna. Theron is completely psychotic and frightening, and her make-up and costuming is amazing.

ehind modern legends Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Seattle’s most successful and well-loved grunge band is Soundgarden, and the rockers are back this week with their first studio album in over 15 years, ‘Animal Kingdom’. Soundgarden reformed in early 2010, and since then have released both a greatest hits and a live album. Recent airplay hit ‘Live to Rise’ – which you might remember from the closing credits of box office blockbuster ‘The Avengers’ – does not feature amongst the 13 fresh tracks on the album, but there’s no shortage of quality to be found. The first song on the album, the appropriately titled ‘Been Away Too Long’, is riff-heavy and a punchy return to the grunge stars we know and love. Vocalist Chris Cornell is just as grittysounding as fans will remember from 90’s albums ‘Down on the Upside’ and the popular ‘Superunknown’ as he muses on the nature of dreams, parenthood and

music itself. ‘King Animal’ has been described as “nightmarish” by reviewers, a return to the music of the grunge era that has been absent for quite a while. Soundgarden’s comeback album ‘King Animal’ is released this week, make sure you grab yourself a copy.

FOOD REVIEW

OSSO STEAK AND RIBS RESTAURANT

rom the fine selection of meats in the deli to the suave bar setting, Osso Steak and Ribs Restaurant offers a unique and unforgettable dining experience. Osso is the perfect setting for a business lunch, dinner date or a little self indulgence – the modern interior will have you feeling comfortable and the staff, including the charming waiter Bill, will make you feel like family. Located in Penrith Panthers, Osso has a menu for connoisseurs and carnivores alike. Start with the bruchetta entree and enjoy the crisp pizza base, finely chopped tomatoes and onion with olive oil, vinegar and freshlymade basil paste. There are many mouth-watering mains to choose from but be sure to order the wagyu beef. Though steak is most enjoyable with a fresh Béarnaise, Diane or pink pepper sauce, this premium, grain-fed wagyu beef is so tasty you will want to enjoy its marbled flavour as is. Some other choices to consider include the Cargill Wagga Wagga grain-fed eye fillet of filet mignon and the RH Collinson Pasture sirloin or t-bone. And it would not be Osso Steak and Ribs without a delicious range of ribs. Don’t be embarrassed to put down the cutlery; tender and full of flavour, the meat falls

right off the rib bone. Osso cooks their ribs twice for guaranteed tenderness and they are basted with Osso’s own Hickory Barbeque Sauce. Don’t be fooled though, Osso’s quality food doesn’t stop with the mains. Displaying talent in every aspect of the kitchen, Osso’s pastry chefs have picked some dessert favourites for the menu that simply cannot be overlooked. Try a caramel brulee with poached pear and peanut brittle, a scrumptious chocolate tasting plate or sticky date pudding. And new to the menu will be a white chocolate and coconut panna cotta with a raspberry top. If you feel like a savoury dessert, Osso boasts an impressive range of Australian and international cheeses such as Mauri Taleggio from Lomardy in Italy and Ashgrove Vintage Black Wax Cheddar from Elizabeth Town in Tasmania. To cap off a night of gustatory delight, match any of your meals to over 100 wines from some of Australia’s most acclaimed vineyards, local and imported beers or classic range of cocktail favourites that the bar staff create with a modern twist. Osso is located inside Penrith Panthers, 123 Mulgoa Road, Penrith. For reservations call 4720 5588. - Reviewed by Cassandra O’Connor

heck out this special feature today to find the best place to book your Christmas party or work function. The most important thing about organising a Christmas party is, of course, remaining calm and stress free. Plus, you want to make it unique. It’s a busy time of year for everyone, so the best option is of course to find a great venue in the local area and avoid any mess, cleaning or cooking. During the party season, it is vital to make sure you are organised, whether you’re planning a party or attending one. If you’re not planned, it’s likely you will be facing a festive disaster! ‘O Christmas Tree’ is a brand new company which is bringing Christmas decorations to Australia’s shores, which have never been seen before. Catherine Oates Smith has started this new range of Christmas decorations and has traded in the executive office job as a COO of a leading law firm, to help people over this

exciting yet often stressful time. She has five top tips to make everyone’s Christmas more enjoyable and less stressful this year, now that we have hit November: 1. Plan: There are only seven weeks until Christmas and if you plan on creating or hosting any sort of Christmas celebration, large or small, it will be a lot less stressful if you start planning now. 2. Use a calendar: Record every event you know you need to attend and any other significant commitment or impacting factor, until January such as family commitments, school break-up, work commitments, holiday and travel plans, arrival and departure of guests, parties, drinks, dinners. This way you won’t double book anything and disappoint people. 3. Make lists: Make lists of guests who might be staying with you and ensure you have sleeping arrangements organised. Make gift lists now, because by just making a list it will trigger your mind to be on the lookout for suitable gifts on your travels.

he race stopped the nation, and so did some of the fashions! Penrith celebrated Melbourne Cup day on Tuesday with a range of functions across the local area, with some of the biggest being at Panthers, Penrith RSL and the Penrith Paceway. Our photographer, Melinda Jane, captured plenty of the fun and excitement of the big day, as Penrith stopped work to party! There was plenty of fantastic dresses, brilliant suits... and the odd winning ticket, too! With entertainment galore at some of Penrith’s biggest venues, locals were kept enthralled by not just the race, but the bits and pieces around it too! Check out more photos from Melbourne Cup day in Penrith on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/westernweekender. Are you holding an event you’d love ‘Social Scene’ to cover? CHATTER ON THE BOX with Nathan Taylor

M

ajor news broke late last week that Channel Seven had axed long-running variety show ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ from its 2013 schedule. Less the 24 hours later, rivals Nine snapped it up and added it to its new line-up for next year. The axe didn’t come as much of a surprise with ratings from this season way down on previous years and featuring a judging panel that was looking tired and boring. The only way the franchise could’ve survived in the short-term was new host/judges or a change of networks, and it went with both. Nine recently revived ‘Big Brother’, and has done so reasonably well, so expect ‘AGT’ to have a completely fresh, updated and more entertaining vibe next year. [Pictured] If you were worried you missed some of your favourite American shows last week, don’t be too alarmed because they didn’t actually air. Super-Storm Sandy not only devastated millions across east coast America but it also stopped many top shows from airing in the US, largely due to the non-stop coverage many American networks gave to the storm. Therefore shows usually fast-tracked from the US into Australia, such as ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘2 Broke Girls’, weren’t seen. Programming did return to normal though this week.

Good news for fans of reality show ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’ because it’s finally been renewed by Foxtel for another season. The show didn’t air this year after former host Sarah Murdoch quit the program following the 2011 season to pursue interests at Channel Ten. Whispers are that current ‘Project Runway Australia’ host Megan Gale will get the honours of hosting the revived modeling contest. I’m not the biggest fan of Gale’s hosting abilities, she’s quite bland and pedestrian. If the show wants to make a big splash in 2013 it needs to go above and beyond and not use existing Foxtel talent. Michael Palin is one of the world’s best travel presenters and now he’s off to South America for his next exhilarating adventure. ‘Michael Palin’s Brazil’ is a four-part series which will air on ABC1 from this Sunday, November 11. From the lost world of Amazonia to the buzzing modern metropolis of Rio de Janeiro, Palin explores this vast and disparate nation in his inimitable way. It’s a timely look at this rising global power, host nation for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics. It all begins at 7.30pm. Those funny boys, Hamish and Andy, are back for another installment of their popular ‘Caravan of Courage’ series. This time the boys will be hosting two 90-minute specials – one from Australia and one from New Zealand. The crazy pair will rev up the old caravan and courageously drive the length of New Zealand and the breadth of Australia to compare and contrast the people and places that make our region so unique. And then, in a very unscientific manner, they will pick a winner. ‘Hamish and Andy’s Caravan of Courage: Aus vs NZ’ airs Sundays, November 11 and 18 at 6.30pm on Nine.

Kerri-Anne Kennerley delivered some great news last week – she was free from cancer. KAK went through six and a half weeks of radiation for breast cancer, first diagnosed back in June during her time on ‘Dancing with the Stars’. Now all is well and good we look forward to having KAK back on our screens very soon.
