CELEBRITY PSYCHIC IS ON THE ROAD
03
SHANNON COCHRANE goes one on one with the UK’s most popular psychic Sally Morgan and discovers that it may not be smoke and mirrors afterall...
S
ally Morgan describes herself as an ordinary woman: a wife, mother and grandmother. But there’s no doubt that this celebrity psychic is leading an extraordinary life. Starring in her own popular TV show, Morgan is Britain’s most famous medium and has earned herself both fans and detractors. Raised in a working class family in West London, Morgan claims to have had her first psychic experience at the tender age of four but it was only when she reached adulthood that she decided to give up her day job as a nurse and become a professional medium. After working as Princess Diana’s psychic, Morgan was propelled from relative obscurity into a whirlwind of fame as celebrities sought out her paranormal services with her client list including George Michael, Katie Price and Natalie Imbruglia. Morgan’s fame has only grown since as she has takes to the stage on countless tours each year and has also starred in her own television shows ‘Sally Morgan Star Psychic’ and ‘Psychic Sally: On the Road’. Now the woman who has been dubbed ‘Britain’s best-loved psychic’ will bring her stage show on its first ever Australian tour, coming to Penrith’s Evan Theatre on Friday, July 12. With her TV show currently airing down under, Morgan has won over many Aussie fans who now have the chance to see her powers in action, live as she passes on messages from spirits to audience members. “The evenings can be a journey; we laugh, we cry… they can be quite funny and hopefully very uplifting,” she explained. The concept of being able to communicate

with spirits is one that is exceptionally foreign to most people but natural to Morgan, who has been receiving messages all her life. “For me personally… it’s like a thought pattern, it’s like I get these thoughts in my head and I will just talk about them, I will just tell exactly what I’m getting… there could be a little scene in my head, I could smell something, I could taste something, someone could touch me, I could see someone literally on stage.” Following in the footsteps of other famous psychics like American John Edward, Morgan has become a household name in the UK and has hordes of devoted fans. But while fame may have its perks, Morgan insists she never intended on becoming a celebrity and that life in the limelight isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. “I wouldn’t say I regret it [fame] because that would not be right to the people who have put me here... but I just think that you open the door to so many people that have big problems where this work is concerned and it isn’t just about them saying that they don’t believe me; they want you dead and they want you beheaded and they want your family dead. I’ve had some dreadful things said to me in the past few years so it’s not all a piece of cake, I can assure you,” she said. Morgan has encountered skepticism all her life, ranging from, “normal skepticism, which is people who are up for a debate” right through to vitriol that she believes amounts to a “witch hunt”. Although Morgan admits that she has to have “broad shoulders” to deal with the scrutiny, she also believes her skeptics have pushed her to reflect upon and understand

It is not all a piece of cake, I can assure you! herself more. “In a way, they’ve helped me because what they’ve done is – and I don’t want to sound patronising to these people – but in a way, because I have been questioned, I have to answer and you have to stretch yourself to try to understand what you’re doing,” she said. While Morgan’s fans may swear by her powers, the market is saturated with dodgy psychics taking advantage of their clients’ emotions for a quick buck. Morgan advises anyone seeking out a reputable psychic to do their research and ask friends for recommendations. “It’s like, you want a dentist that isn’t going to hurt you, you’re going to ask around your friends for recommendations and that’s what
you should do with a medium. If you don’t want to get hurt or feel disappointed or feel as if you’ve seen somebody that cannot do what they’re saying they can do, ask around,” she said. So is the famed ‘Psychic Sally’ herself the real deal? According to her, seeing is believing.
Sally Morgan’s ‘Psychic Sally on the Road’ tour will be at Penrith Panthers on Friday, July 12, for those keen to see and believe. Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. Tickets are $44.50. Visit www.penrith. panthers.com.au for more details.

LEFT WANTING BURCHMORE
R
honda Burchmore has enjoyed a fabulous entertainment career and is known as one of Australia’s most lively and diverse performers. Now she will tell her tale through music with ‘Legs 11’, a feel-good musical biography documenting her 25 years in the spotlight. The veteran performer will be bringing her larger-than-life stage presence to Blacktown Workers Club for one “not to be missed” night on Saturday, June 1. The show is a musical exploration of Burchmore’s amazing life and dazzling show business career, set to an inspiring set list of songs and tales that influenced her throughout her life. It is a warm, funny and mesmerising journey through the past two and a half decades – from casting her dolls in supporting roles of childhood plays, to forgetting her lines on live television as a shy teenager, to singing for a US president and meeting Lady Diana, and a highlight, playing alongside screen veteran, the late Eddie Bracken, in ‘Hot Shoe Shuffl e’. Fans will be delighted to hear Burchmore tackle an impressive repertoire of songs that will touch and entertain them including ‘Broadway Baby’, ‘Birth of the Blues’, ‘In My Daughter’s Eyes’, ‘New York, New York’, ‘To Sir With Love’, ‘Get Happy’, ‘All That Jazz’, ‘Diamonds’, ‘Sway’, ‘Cry Me A River’ and ‘Dancing Queen’. As always throughout her illustrious career, Burchmore puts all her energy and talent into her performance in ‘Legs 11’ with the show garnering rave reviews from critics, who praised its upbeat atmosphere and glitz. The Sydney Morning Herald referred to the show as being “totally embraceable… larger than life”, while the Courier Mail said: “Rhonda Burchmore took the stage with more sparkles than a galaxy spilling over with stars… her numbers were explosively delivered”. With over a quarter of a century’s show business experience behind her, Burchmore has made a reputation for herself as one of the country’s most talented and audacious performers. Her cabaret and theatre performances have delighted both audiences and critics, and she was nominated for a 2002 Mo Award for Female Musical Theatre Performer of the Year for her role in ‘Mamma Mia’. A highpoint of ‘Legs 11’ is undoubtedly Rhonda’s performance of songs from the ABBA musical production. She has also appeared in many other musicals and plays including ‘Sugar Babies’, ‘Stop The World I Want To Get Off’, ‘Easter Parade’, ‘Into The Woods’, ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ and ‘Guys and Dolls’ as well as starring in her own cabaret show. This seasoned, vivacious performer is a joy to watch on stage and is sure to create an enchanting night of entertainment with her show ‘Legs 11’. ‘Legs 11’ will show at Blacktown Workers Club on Saturday, June 1 at 8pm. Tickets are $25 for members or $28 for visitors. For bookings or more information, call 9830 0600 or visit www.workersclub.com.au.

WARNING: PUT YOUR HELMET ON
W
ith a career that has spanned decades, David Bowie is the ultimate musical chameleon and now his hits are being honoured in a fabulous stage show. ‘Ziggy – The Songs of David Bowie’ will be returning to the Sydney Opera House for five amazing shows from Thursday, July 18 to Saturday, July 20. Three of Australia’s most talented performers, Jeff Duff, Steve Balbi and Brydon Stace, will take to the stage to present the songs of Bowie in a unique, thrilling show that is a must-see for fans. Bowie is known for his one-of-a-kind, trailblazing music that has constantly kept up with the times and helped define pop culture. He first came to public attention in 1969 with his top five hit ‘Space Oddity’ and since then music lovers across the globe have been treated to a string of Bowie hits, including ‘Starman’, ‘Ashes to Ashes’, ‘Under Pressure’, ‘China Girl’ and ‘Modern Love’.
The stage show will explore the artistic genius of David Bowie’s music as Duff, Balbi and Stace rock out alongside The Ziggy Band to perform a set list that features all of the hits – ‘Heroes’, ‘Life on Mars’, ‘Space Oddity’, ‘Fame’, ‘Young Americans’, ‘Ziggy Stardust’, ‘Let’s Dance’ and many more. The performers who will put their own spin on Bowie’s songs each have impressive musical careers themselves – Jeff Duff is an acclaimed rock vocalist who has released 28 albums; Steve Balbi is one of the nation’s leading songwriters with Noiseworks, Electric Hippies and solo; and Brydon Stace has had a long, varied career with a stint with INXS and in theatrical productions. “The gang at Ziggy central are over the moon about our upcoming Bowie concerts at the Sydney Opera House. We’re including a few new amazing Bowie songs and getting into some new stylish and flamboyant costumes,” Duff said. “We’re all set for an unforgettable journey
into Planet Bowie! Take your protein pills and put your helmet on!” ‘Ziggy – The Songs of David Bowie’ will show at The Studio, Sydney Opera House for
five shows from Thursday, July 18 to Saturday, July 20. Tickets are $69. For bookings or more information, call 9250 7777 or visit www. sydneyoperahouse.com.au.

THE WORLD’S NUMBER ONE QUEEN SHOW
T
he high-spirited, rocking music of the legendary band Queen touched the lives of many people, and now fans can relive the glory. Bohemian Rhapsody, a tribute band that captures the spirit and sound of Queen, will be coming to Blacktown Workers Club on Saturday, June 8. Led by Freddie Mercury impersonator Thomas Crane, Bohemian Rhapsody wows audiences with their spot on performances and a set list that touches on all of Queen’s greatest hits. Fans can expect to hear a range of awesome songs including ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’, ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘We Are The Champions’, and of course the classic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. Anyone who has had the pleasure of watching Queen perform live will know that their shows were so much more than just music – the band had an unbelievable stage presence and attitude, with loads of theatrics
and energy to get the crowd going. The Bohemian Rhapsody show reflects the vibe of Queen concerts with lots of posturing and preening, strutting and showmanship that will remind fans of the good old days. With his swagger and attention-demanding stage presence, Thomas Crane is arguably the best Freddie Mercury in Australia if not the entire world. Boasting many years of experience behind him, Crane perfectly adopts the charisma and flamboyance that made Freddie Mercury such a beloved, successful figure in the entertainment industry. A talented musician in his own right, Crane can sing beautiful opera and play the piano as well as sounding, looking and acting like the great Freddie Mercury. This talented tribute group is so popular that they have become very in demand and will be embarking on a tour of the United States in July this year. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience

THEATRE AND FOOTY A GREAT MIX
T
heatre and sports are mixed with fabulously entertaining results in David Williamson’s play ‘The Club’, which will be performed on stage at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, June 15. ‘The Club’ delves into the tumultuous atmosphere of the Australian football scene in a time when clubs were struggling in between the push and pull of old tradition and a brave new world of modernisation. Old school coach and club honcho Laurie Holden is looking forward to the future but also holds a deeply seated respect for the foundations and history of his club. He is joined by self-made millionaire and club president Ted Parker, who has grand, ambitious plans to drag his club members kicking and screaming into the modern era whether they like it or not. Dramas are heightened by the presence of high priced recruit Geoff Haywood, a player with a truckload of attitude behind him but the club’s management must work out if he’s half
as good as he claims he is. The clock is ticking, with the finals looming ahead and reputations on the line, it’s time for the club to decide what path it will take – are time-honoured traditions worth preserving or should the club chase success and money? With intense drama on and off the field, the question is: can the proudest club in Aussie Rules history triumph over back room dramas and boardroom brawls? ‘The Club’ is one of beloved playwright David Williamson’s best works with his writing talents shining through in a fabulous drama that follows the seismic shift from Australian sport to business. Stage and screen veteran actor John Wood, best known for his role in ‘Blue Heelers’, will light up the stage with his performance in this uniquely Australian play. ‘The Club’ will show at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, June 15 at 8pm. Tickets are $40. For bookings or more information, call 9625 5500 or visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

T
he high energy rockers of Thirty Seconds to Mars will be unleashed on Sydney when they tour here later this year. The popular rock band, which is led by well-known actor Jared Leto, will embark on a national tour and stop by at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Sunday, August 11. This tour will coincide with the recent release of Thirty Seconds to Mars’ highly anticipated fourth studio album entitled ‘Love Lust Faith + Dreams’. Produced by Leto and previous collaborator Steve Lillywhite (who has worked with names such as U2, The Rolling Stones and The Smiths), the latest album will be their best to date. Fans should expect to be pleasantly surprised by the new material, which marks a change in direction for the band. The first single ‘Up in the Air’ has already garnered significant attention after it debuted in space after being played on the International
Space Station. August will not be the first trip to Australia for Thirty Seconds to Mars, they previously played sell-out theatre tours in 2007 and 2010. After beginning in 1998 as a family project between brothers Jared and Shannon Leto, Thirty Seconds To Mars later added guitarist Tomo Milicevic to their line up and has since grown into a chart-topping band that has sold over five million albums across the globe. Their self-titled debut impressed listeners and critics and was followed up by sophomore album ‘A Beautiful Lie’, which helped cement their position in the charts. Success was on the cards again when the band released their third album ‘This Is War’, which went multi platinum throughout Europe and reached number 2 on the US Alternative Albums and Digital Albums charts. Thirty Seconds to Mars will play at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Sunday, August 11. For bookings or more information, call 136 100 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.au.

ell known alternative rockers Alice in Chains are back with their second album since the band’s 2005 reunion and they’re louder and better than ever. After their 2009 release ‘Black Gives Way to Blue’, the band have followed up with a record that sounds great and will please fans but doesn’t push too many boundaries and sticks to the essence of Alice in Chain’s sound. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell described the album in an interview with Revolver magazine by saying: “I don’t think you’ll be surprised by anything you hear… it’s us. But it’s also really unique. It’s got all the elements of any record we’ve put out, but it’s unlike any record we’ve put out. Basically, it’s the next chapter in the Alice in Chains book, and it’s going to be a big one”. Two singles have already been released from the album, with ‘Stone’ reaching number 4 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and ‘Hollow’ debuting on YouTube with a fan made lyric video. The band also delivers some
interesting lyrical content, foraying into politics and religion with their song ‘The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here’. Sticking to the classic alternative rock style, Alice in Chains have made an album that will undoubtedly please their many fans.

SHADES OF GRIGIO ARE GAINING AUSSIE FANS
by David Ellis
T
he French have been making pinot gris for yonks, with references to it going back as far as the 14th century. Later it found its way to Italy where it’s grown and labelled as pinot grigio and is now one of the most popular white wine varieties imported into many regions in the USA. And it’s gaining fans here in Australia too; in the last decade or so locally-made versions are moving from somewhere down in the “alternative white wine” category, to more worthy mainstream recognition. There are some winemakers turning out marvellously credible pinot grigio in warmer areas: in the Hunter Valley, for instance, David Hook Wines was somewhat of a pinot grigio pioneer in that region in the late 1980’s, with David producing consistently excellent examples from his family’s one-time grazing property at Pokolbin. ‘Grigio’ is Italian for grey and while many pinot grigio in their homeland have a grey shade about them, in Australia it is not always
the case. David Hook’s recently-released 2012, for instance, is a bright medium green with yellow and gold tinges, and is a wonderfully steely, dry drop that’s nicely balanced between fruitiness and acidity. At a great-value $18 and with forward tropical fruit flavours and a touch of spice, serve this David Hook Pinot Grigio well-chilled with mixed fried seafoods, or Thai beef salad. One to note: Another interesting drop from one of the Hunter’s smaller makers is a 2011 LDR Shiraz from the family-run De Iuliis Wines. Chief Winemaker, Mike de luliis, has crafted a drop that’s great for enjoyment now, but will improve marvelously over the next five years – so think of cellaring a few for the future. Made from fruit grown on heavy clay soils, this wine’s already showing all signs of being a Hunter classic – medium to full-bodied with a soft mouth feel of fine grained tannins, ripe plums and blackberries. At $40 it’s one for a special dinner with spicy peppered scotch fillets under a creamy mushroom sauce.
stablished in 1984, it is with good reason that Happy Inn Chinese Restaurant is still so popular with Penrith residents. Offering the best in Chinese cuisine, inspired by traditional Cantonese and Northern Chinese dishes, diners will not be able to fault the quality of food, service and family atmosphere at Penrith’s premier Chinese restaurant. Though the favourites like spring rolls, prawn cocktails and sesame prawn toast will always impress; one entree you should be sure to try is the steamed pork gow gee. These delicious dumplings contain tender pork and shallots that will melt in your mouth. For those who love Peking duck, there’s a delightful entree that won’t cost as much as the extravagant dish but uses all the flavours. An original creation by the restaurant owner, enjoy tender meat wrapped in a pancake with shallots and drizzled with a Hoi Sin based sauce. This dish will definitely be a family favourite. The sizzling garlic king prawn hot pot is equally appetising – brought out steaming hot with a delectable garlic flavour wafting from the dish. Happy Inn offers an impressive range of Chinese main meals, like the old favourites, honey chicken and combination chow mein, however, for a truly wonderful dining
experience, try some of the chef’s suggestions. The honey pepper diced steak with cashew nuts is a colourful dish that the whole family will enjoy. The steak is the definition of tender, and the honey pepper sauce is subtle yet perfectly balanced in flavour. For a twist on a classic dish, try the Singapore king prawns. Though similar to satay prawns, this dish has a dash of chilli, curry, satay and onion, which makes it a tad spicier and perfect for a cold winter’s night. If you are feeling more adventurous than lemon chicken, why not try the Shun Tong chicken – boneless crispy chicken that the kids will love, served with garlic, soy sauce, and a touch of chilli. You can also take your pick of soups, noodle dishes, seafood, vegetables and more. And order a side of special fried rice – the best in Penrith by far. End the night on a sweet note with ice cream or deep fried ice cream, and a serving of fresh fruit. And don’t forget your fortune cookie! Happy Inn is located at 401 High Street, Penrith. A
week ago if you had asked me about the country of India, two words would have come to mind – Sachin Tendulkar. Since then I have eaten at Little India on High Street in Penrith, open for dinner every night except Mondays. Those who have eaten Indian food before will know the classic Indian dish Butter Chicken very well. At Little India the chicken simply melts in your mouth, but there is more to this restaurant than one dish. A wide selection of entrées are available including the Little Indian Platter, which offers samples of Chicken Tikka, Seekh Kebab, Chicken Kebab, Murg Tikka and the most tender of lamb cutlets that would most certainly excite our Aussie mate Sam Kekovich. If you don’t want the platter and simply want the best item on the menu, order a serving of the Seekh Kebabs for your starter. With a beautiful mint sauce, this will really kick off your dining experience with a bang. Of great delight to the vegetarians of the world, Little India offers a wide
selection. My attention was drawn to the main meal Navratan Korma which is mixed vegetables pan-fried with dried nuts, a cream sauce sprinkled with fenugreek leaves, green coriander and mace powder. Now to my personal favourite, the meat! Take your pick of seafood, chicken, lamb and beef dishes. If you can handle food with a bit of heat, then you’ll enjoy the Beef Vindaloo. Rogan Josh is also a very popular lamb dish but the Chicken Tikka Masala alone is enough to come back for. Of course, for the traditionalists among us, the Butter Chicken is simply brilliant, and amongst the best you will taste in the local area. Accompanied with your choice of naan bread, a meal at Little India will have your stomach screaming for more, it’s just that good! Whilst take away is very popular at Little India, I would suggest sitting inside the restaurant to soak up the true atmosphere and flavour it has to offer. Once you have experienced the palatable tastes of Little India, I am sure you will also be asking yourself… “Sachin who?”
ENJOY our great Spur taste with mouthwatering burgers, delicious steaks and ribs, healthy salads.

CHATTER ON THE BOX with Nathan Taylor
T
here’s been some chatter of late that ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ could be making a comeback to Channel Ten in 2014. While this hasn’t been confirmed by network bosses, it’s understood the struggling station is looking to get back into the talent show market. ‘SYTYCD’ was Ten’s last big talent show hit after recent offerings like ‘Everybody Dance Now’ and ‘I Will Survive’ failed to fire. CBS in America has postponed the season finale of comedy ‘Mike & Molly’ because the episode features a tornado event. CBS said they were holding back the season finale of the show due to the recent tornado
Everyone’s favourite Aussie actress Lisa McCune is back on our screens next month in the new Channel Ten show, ‘Reef Doctors’. Running the remote Hope Island Clinic, Sam Stewart (McCune) is an accomplished doctor, who with her team, looks after the residents of all the neighbouring islands, as well as the holidaymakers and thrill seekers who visit the area. Not only a GP, Sam is a single mother with a free spirit and a determination – for an unusual hobby: venom. ‘Reef Doctors’ begins Sunday, June 9 at 6.30pm. Also, set to hit our screens via The Comedy Channel is crazy US reality show ‘Killer Karaoke’. The show sees contestants challenged to perform their favourite songs in extreme and outrageous circumstances to win a cash prize. Hosted by Steve-O, ‘Killer Karaoke’ puts contestants in potentially dangerous, humiliating and sometimes painful situations where they have to keep on singing right to the end. Some of the stunts include getting dunked into an ice-cold water tank filled with snakes, receiving a face full of pigeons (what?), getting their butt waxed or being attacked by dangerous dogs… sounds unreal! ‘Killer Karaoke’ airs Sunday nights at 7.30pm from June 9. Bio Channel’s ‘Intervention’ has been axed after 13 seasons. In the history of the show, 243 interventions took place with 156
individuals apparently still sober to this day. That show that every promiscuous teenager is obsessed with, ‘Skins’, is returning to SBS2 next month with season six. The UK are set to screen the seventh and final season in July. ‘Skins’ airs Thursday, June 6 at 9.35pm. Lastly, more doctors have signed on to Foxtel’s new series ‘Embarrassing Bodies
Down Under’. Australian doctors Dr Ginni Mansberg, Dr Sam Hay and Dr Brad McKay will join the UK’s Dr Christian Jessen for the local series. Prior to Dr Christian’s arrival next month, these three highly experienced local doctors will be working out of the ‘Embarrassing Bodies Down Under’ mobile clinic in the search for patients to appear in the series. The first stop this week was Parramatta and I am so curious to know what they found here in the west!

THE HUNT FOR PIERRE JNR By David M Henley
R
eaders will be drawn into an eerie, dystopic world in new science fiction novel The Hunt for Pierre Jnr, which heralds a return to the golden age of
sci-fi . The book, written by author and publisher David M Henley, has been described as a combination of the style of beloved writer Phillip K Dick and Japanese anime. The Hunt for Pierre Jnr is the first of a bold new trilogy, set in the not too distant future in the year 2159 where society has changed dramatically compared to the world we live in now. In this highly technologically advanced world, the world’s government can be changed based on the will of the people in the space of 12 hours, with the leader’s ascent to power being determined by their lack of influence over the ‘Weave’. Technology can be created quickly and based on human desires but can change the entire nature of human civilisation. Against this backdrop of a fast-paced, high-tech society, the threat of anarchy looms
with the chance of a rebellion being led by the mysterious Pierre Jnr. Pierre Jnr has a mind more powerful than any the world has encountered before. He can make you forget, he can control you and he is only eight-years-old. Three months after his birth he escaped. An hour later he was lost to surveillance. No one knows where he has been for the last eight years. Now Pierre Jnr is about to return. A special elite team has been put together to track down Pierre Jnr but the ultimate showdown is on the horizon and the fate of society hangs in the balance. The book follows this elite team dedicated to hunting down this threat to humanity. With its futuristic theme and dystopian vibe, The Hunt for Pierre Jnr will be a hit with sci-fi and spec fiction fans who are sure to be hooked on this three-part series. Author David M Henley has worked in publishing, and had stints as an illustrator and designer. He has also been involved in supporting young and emerging artists in the past, and written two novellas and a gift book.
