TASSIE BROTHERS GET THEIR CHANCE

03

SHANNON COCHRANE chats to Nick Wolfe of The Wolfe Brothers about working with a country legend, being on TV and going to Nashville...

N

ot too long ago, The Wolfe Brothers were just four Tassie boys who met in high school and bonded over a love of rock-laced country music. Now they’ve skyrocketed from playing pubs in Hobart to touring the mainland with the legendary Lee Kernaghan. Made up of brothers Nick and Tom Wolfe and their former school mates Casey Kostiuk and Brodie Rainbird, the band shot to fame last year on the sixth series of reality television show ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, finishing as runners up. But while they may not have ended in pole position, their appearance on TV was enough to boost their career and introduce them to thousands of new fans. One of those fans was country music legend Lee Kernaghan, who after spotting them on television chose The Wolfe Brothers to accompany him on his Beautiful Noise tour. According to lead singer Nick Wolfe, the band was called up by Kernaghan’s management and invited to audition in the recording studio where they impressed the star after playing only one song. “That was pretty daunting for four boys from Tassie, we’d always idolised Lee so to be getting that shot; that was probably the most nerve-wracking situation in a while,” Wolfe said. “But we played one song with Lee and he said ‘well boys, you got the job, congratulations’ and we didn’t know whether he was joking or not but he was very serious and here we are a few months on going around the country with him, so we’re very grateful.” The tour is larger-than-life, stretching out over 18 months and stopping by at locations all

over Australia including Penrith’s Evan Theatre on Friday, August 9. Beyond just touring together, the band has also collaborated with Kernaghan on a cover of the classic country song ‘Lights on the Hill’, which was immortalised by Slim Dusty. They will also be honouring the ‘King of Country’ at the Slim Dusty Birthday Bash on Thursday, June 13 at Rooty Hill RSL. The Wolfe Brothers have also met with success on the charts, with their debut album ‘It’s On’, released earlier this year, going to number two on the ARIA country chart and number 18 on the mainstream chart. This impressive figure makes the band the highest ARIA charting act to come from Tasmania – a major boasting point for the proud born and bred Tassie boys. Much of the band’s popularity was built up during their run on ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, and Wolfe believes that their easygoing, fun nature earned the crowd’s respect. “A lot of people think it must be really nerve wracking getting out there in front of potentially millions of people watching it, but for us we just always kept it light hearted, we just like to be ourselves and didn’t want to have a sob story and get too deep, which sometimes those sort of shows can do. We just said, let’s make it about music, about entertainment and I think people really connected with it,” Wolfe said. While working with a family member might seem like a disaster waiting to happen, the Wolfes have been playing together since they were young boys, encouraged by their musician father. Although the talented duo argue from time to time, Wolfe believes that the close knit bond

We didn’t know whether he was joking or not but he was very serious between the band’s members is part of the reason they’re so successful. “We have some real beauties but they’re all over quickly resolved and I think it’s good... Brody and Casey too, the other guys, they may as well be brothers we’ve known them for so long as well,” Wolfe said. This year has been a busy one for The Wolfe Brothers – on top of the tour and releasing ‘It’s On’, the band is also hard at work writing new material for an album for next year and are due to play at Nashville, Tennessee. “I don’t think any of us have been out of the country before so to be heading over to Nashville to the country music mecca and doing a gig there, that’s just going to be

amazing, it’s the CMA Global Artist party so it’s really cool,” Wolfe said excitedly.

The Wolfe Brothers will perform with Lee Kernaghan on the ‘Beautiful Noise’ tour at the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Friday, August 9 at 8pm. Tickets are $49.50 and can be purchased by calling 4720 5555 or visiting www.penrith.panthers. com.au. The band will also play at the Slim Dusty Birthday Bash on Thursday, June 13 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $150. For bookings call 9625 5500 or visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

CELEBRATE TWO GREATS OF COUNTRY

R

elive the magic memories and great hits from country musicians Glen Campbell and John Denver in an inspiring tribute show, which celebrates the music of the two country boys. Starring Graham Toole, this show will bring out all the hits of two country legends for fans at Blacktown Workers Club on Saturday, June 15. Toole will perform and pay tribute to both Campbell and Denver, singing all of their most beloved songs live on stage and taking the audience on a trip down memory lane to the 1960’s and 70’s when their music topped the charts. During his half-century long music career, Glen Campbell has carved out a truly unique path for himself, releasing over 70 albums and selling 45 million records worldwide. He was loved by his many fans and was even popular among the critics, accumulating 12 RIAA gold albums, four platinum albums and one double platinum album with his songs

shooting up the country music charts no less than 74 times with an astonishing 27 Top 10 hits. With his unique and catchy genreblending music, Campbell was a trailblazer and made history in 1967 when he won four Grammy Awards in both the pop and country categories. Fans of Campbell will enjoy being transported back in time when Toole takes on all of his most memorable hits including ‘Gentle On My Mind’, ‘By the Time I Get To Phoenix’, ‘Wichita Lineman’, ‘Galveston’, ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’, ‘Southern Nights’ and more. Another country music luminary is John Denver, who achieved 12 gold and four platinum albums along with 20 million record sales over the course of his career. His hits defined the country music scene in the 1960’s and 70’s with many of them still receiving radio air play to this day – songs such as ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’, ‘Rocky Mountain High’, ‘Annie’s Song’, ‘Thank God I’m

A Country Boy’, ‘Sunshine On My Shoulders’ and ‘Leaving On A Jet Plane’. Any fan of old school country music will love this touching tribute show starring Graham Toole. The Glen Campbell and John Denver

albums worldwide and are still a favourite with audiences young and old – and the band are still actively touring to this day. Their catchy music is paid tribute in the Fleetwood Mac Show which takes on the tunes and spirit of the 70’s.

The Fleetwood Mac Show will play at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, July 13 at 8pm. Tickets are $10 for members and $12 for visitors. For bookings or more information on the show, call 9625 5500 or visit www. rootyhilrsl.com.au.

RELIVING THE SPIRIT OF THE 70’S

T

he smash hits of Fleetwood Mac defined the music scene in the 1970’s and have been etched into history. Now fans can experience a show that takes on the spirit of the band when The Fleetwood Mac Show comes to Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, July 13. This major concert production has been a hit on the pub and clubs circuit in Sydney, drawing large crowds in a range of venues over the past four years. The concept for the tribute group was formed way back in 1999 by Gary Stewart and Ursula Cain-Stewart, who had moved from New Zealand to Sydney and scouted the absolute best musical talent for their tribute show. After a few line-up changes, the Fleetwood Mac Show has settled with a talented troupe of performers, including a live seven piece band with some of Sydney’s best session musicians. While Fleetwood Mac lead singer Stevie Nicks is truly one of a kind, the breathtaking

vocal delivery of Ursula Cain-Stewart comes close and reproduces the style and talent of Nicks when she was at the peak of her career. The show will enthrall audience members for two hours, performing all of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic hit songs including ‘Dreams’, ‘Go Your Own Way’, ‘Gold Dust Woman’, ‘Tusk’, ‘Rhiannon’, ‘The Chain’, ‘Gyspy’, ‘Don’t Stop’ and many others. On top of the fabulous music, the Fleetwood Mac Show also provides fans with a brief yet fascinating look into the history and biographical details of the classic band, set to a dramatic lighting show. Formed in the 1960’s, Fleetwood Mac has achieved unbelievable success across the world, with their blues-tinged rock songs shooting up the charts and making their mark on audiences. Made up of lead singer Stevie Nicks, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, drummer Mick Fleetwood and bass player John McVie, Fleetwood Mac have sold over 100 million

ELEGANCE, WIT AND GLAMOUR

A

fabulous new musical showing at the Joan will transport audiences to a stunning world of glamour, wit and elegance. Internationally acclaimed musical ‘Noel & Gertie’ will be showing at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre from June 5 to June 8. This clever musical explores the dynamic friendship between legendary 1920’s entertainers Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence, who formed a renowned on and off stage partnership. Both performers personified British upper class glamour – they looked impeccably elegant and sang, danced and made jokes and witticisms. Coward was a man with many talents, forging a successful career in entertainment as an actor, director, producer, screenwriter, novelist, poet and cabaret artist. He was the creative force behind productions such as ‘Private Lives’, ‘Present Laughter’, ‘Blithe Spirit’ and ‘Hay Fever’.

His sidekick Lawrence was just as well known; a celebrated actress with performances on stage in shows including ‘Lady in the Dark’ and ‘The King and I’. This innovative production shines new light on their close friendship, using diaries and letters between the two as well as songs, sketches and scenes from Coward’s most beloved works. It is directed by Nancye Hayes and stars actor and writer James Millar as Coward and Lucy Maunder as Lawrence. Maunder, who has previously appeared in a range of popular musicals including ‘Dr Zhivago’, ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ and ‘Jekyll and Hyde’, said audiences have a lot to look forward to with ‘Noel & Gertie’. “This is very much in the Noel Coward style of being super quick-witted and acerbic and very funny… so the audience can expect a lot of laughs,” she said. While Coward and Lawrence may have enjoyed the height of their fame way back in

the 1920’s, their work is still relevant and will appeal to younger audiences. “I think what we’re trying to do with it is put our own flavour on it and shine a bit of new light onto this work. I reckon a lot of people our age will absolutely enjoy the show and I don’t think you need to be a Noel Coward fan at all but I assume that anyone who comes to see it

will be by the end because he’s so wonderfully clever in his dialogue and songs and lyrics, you can’t not fall in love with the material,” she said. ‘Noel & Gertie’ will show at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre from Wednesday, June 5 to Saturday, June 8. Tickets range from $29 to $49. For bookings call 4723 7600 or visit www.jspac.com.au.

he classic beloved computer game ‘Minecraft’ can now be enjoyed on the Xbox 360, with all the great features of the original translating well onto the new platform. The game allows the player to use their creative juices to build an entirely unique world from the comfort of their own lounge, resulting in their own virtual reality. You can work by yourself on your creation or team up and play with friends. While ‘Minecraft’ may seem like just another game, it requires a fair bit of intellectual prowess to place and move the blocks to build the structures. With scary nocturnal monsters that roam the streets once the sun sets, players will have to use their smarts to protect themselves with a shelter. From there, they can move on to more imaginative and extravagant architectural feats. There’s also lots of adventure, with brave players having the chance to battle terrifying creatures. ‘Minecraft’ is an absorbing and fun game which requires players to use their imaginations.

fter sweeping the film industry by storm and cleaning up at the Academy Awards, ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ is finally available to watch from the comfort of your own home. This quirky yet poignant film focuses on Pat (Bradley Cooper), who has been recently released from a mental hospital after having a bipolar episode. As we discover early in the film, Pat was institutionalised after he discovered his wife Nikki was cheating on him with a fellow teacher at the high school they were both employed at. As a result of his violent episode, a restraining order was taken out on him and he lost his job as a history teacher. During the months he spent in the hospital, his father has also given up his day job and turned to illegal bookmaking, betting on football games in favour of his beloved Philadelphia Eagles. Pat tries to reclaim his former life and struggles to do so, despite his optimistic attitude of finding the ‘silver linings’ in life. With help, Pat begins to accept the changes in his life.

he hilarious comedic rap trio The Lonely Island are back again with another laugh-out-loud musical offering that crosses lines and pushes boundaries. The group, who is made up of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, are set to release their highly anticipated third studio record ‘The Wack Album’. A wide range of music legends will feature as guests on the album, including Pharrel Williams, T-Pain, Billie Joe Armstrong, Solange, Adam Levine, Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar and Lady Gaga. Be warned that this album is probably not suitable for playing around the kids as the lyrics can be a bit rude and profane even though they’re wickedly funny and witty. ‘3-Way (The Golden Rule)’ is the risque first single from the album, which is already familiar to listeners since it debuted in 2011 on Saturday Night Live. Another excellent track is ‘YOLO’, a funny send-up of the popular youth phrase which entirely twists its meaning in a very

clever way. Other songs on the album include ‘Diaper Money’, ‘Spell It Out’, ‘Spring Break Anthem’, ‘I Don’t Give A Honk’, ‘The Compliments’ and ‘We Are A Crowd’. Using their previous formula of combining funny lyrics with catchy music and celebrity cameos, ‘The Wack Album’ is destined to lighten up the mood of listeners.

STONEGRILL

UNCOMMON POTENTIAL TO BE AN AUSSIE CLASSIC by David Ellis

T

he Clare Valley’s Tim Adams has a problem: he’s tweaked one of his great reds, shown it to liquor retailers and restaurateurs who’ve all said he’s come up with a potential Aussie classic – but that no, they won’t put it on their shelves or wine lists. Because until now his Tim Adams Cabernet was labelled as just that, even though it had some 15 per cent malbec blended into it. Buyers loved it, and a few years ago he increased that 15 per cent malbec to 20 per cent to further complement the leaner cabernet flavours with the wonderfully soft mulberry of malbec. This meant that because malbec was now a 20 per cent component of the wine, by law it had to be included on the label, so since the 2008 vintage Tim’s labelled it Cabernet Malbec. And herein lays the problem: most bottle shops and restaurant wine lists don’t have sections or listings for cabernet malbec – so they’re shying away from this great new blend whose sales are booming in the UK.

“Okay it’s a reasonably uncommon blend, but once people try it they quickly become fans… it’s just a matter of getting them to taste it,” he said. And having done so myself, it will be a decision you’ll not regret. Pay $29 and enjoy with a home-made steak and kidney pie. One to note: Lillypilly Estate in the NSW Riverina has followed-up its 2011 Sauvignon Blanc with a 2012 release that also has its predecessor’s 10 per cent alcohol content, compared with 12 per cent for earlier vintages. “It’s a response to talking with our cellardoor visitors and those we meet at wine fairs and other events,” says winemaker, Robert Fiumara. “They tell us about wanting lots of flavour, but at the same time slightly lower levels of alcohol, from both a health perspective and to better suit modern cuisine.” Robert’s created a great drop with tropical-fruit flavours and a crisp palate; good value too at $15.50 to share with Asian dishes.

nless the cow, chicken or pig was to walk down Henry Street, enter the restaurant and present its hind to me, it’s impossible to have a fresher meal. Any confusion I had about ‘cooking my own meal’ was very quickly put to rest; and from what I had heard, I was to prepare myself like a boxer, fasting and preparing for what was to come. Round one: Upon sitting down, myself and my dining partner began reading the menu and were delightfully overwhelmed with choice. Were we to go with the ‘Stonegrill’ experience, or perhaps order from the a-la-carte menu, recently extended to provide a wide variety of quality options? We started off with classic entrées; Salt and Pepper Squid and the Garlic Prawns. The squid was deliciously battered, with the salt and pepper flavours strong but not overpowering. The garlic prawn sauce was creamy, soaked up by the prawns and rice. Both dishes are available as a main course on the a-la-carte menu. Warmed up now and ready for round two, I decided on the Mixed Grill. Lamb, chicken breast, pork tenderloin and rump steak. I was knocked out by the simple sight of all this meat. The stone was placed under my nose sizzling away with a tantalising smell. It is actually quite simple to deal with the raw meat placed on your stone. One simple flip

of each piece and I was on the way! Cutting up my meat as I normally would, the only extra effort required with the stone is making sure the food doesn’t burn. The stone is so hot that even the last bite on your plate will be tender and juicy, cooked exactly how you want. My personal favourite was the rump steak. My dining partner chose the Chef’s Special, with fresh chicken, beef, prawns, a scallop and a satay skewer. The mains were definitely appreciated all-round, as could be heard from our infamous food noises, something along the lines of “Mmmmmph”. At this point we were starting to doubt our chances against our next opponent: a rack of ribs. It was short lived. Juicy and tender, the meat fell off the bone at the touch of my lips. With ‘Rocky’ music playing in my mind, the final round was to be a dessert showdown. My choice was easily made, Stonegrill’s famous Sticky Date Pudding covered in butterscotch schnapps. I will be ordering this again! My dining partner had ordered the Chocolate and Macadamia Brownie. Rich in flavour and texture, my dining partner suffered the knockout blow half way through. Happily I devoured the remainder quick smart, and would recommend it to lovers of darker chocolate. Stonegrill is located at 80 Henry Street, Penrith. PREPARE FOR YOUR JULY CHRISTMAS

T

here are only 200 sleeps till Christmas. Or... is it only a month away? The tradition of Christmas in July is growing, celebrating in a style similar to our Northern Hemisphere friends a white Christmas - while shivering. The weather outside may be a bit cold, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t find some fun ways to warm up and celebrate during this chilly season. Rudolph’s Christmas is proud to present ‘Christmas in July!’ The unpacking has begun and Rudolph’s have the ability to transform your home or business into a Christmas Winter Wonderland, specialising in custom decorating in-store and carrying everything Christmas related. They have a big range in LED lighting, over 25 types of artificial Christmas trees ranging from 2ft to 20ft and plenty of decorations within. FYI spoke with Russel, the General Manager of Rudolph’s Christmas and he

mentioned that the interest in Christmas in July has steadily risen over the years. “We are now open up five days a week, 9am till 5pm.” With a megastore now open in Mosman, it is obvious that Christmas is not the only time of year to get your decorations. “It isn’t just homes that need sprucing up,” Russel said. “We don’t just do homes. Rudolph’s Christmas can do commercial decorating; anything from homes to hotels.” This is an ideal way to warm up the feeling within the office, or ensure hotel guests get into the spirit of Christmas in July. And if the team at Rudolph’s Christmas don’t have it in stock, they will try and find it somewhere for you. With over 70 years combined experience, they have been serving Penrith since 2004. For the ultimate Christmas experience, decorate your space with advice from Rudolph’s Christmas. Visit the shop at 6 Pattys Lane, Jamisontown, or call 4737 8624.

Following a successful run on SBS One earlier this year, the popular Tropfest Festival has now done a huge deal with SBS2 to broadcast the event live for the next five years. The 22nd Tropfest has also received a new home and date, moving from The Domain in February to Centennial Park in December, making the next Tropfest just six months away.

lenty of sad news to get through first this week. Jean Stapleton who played Edith on ‘All In The Family’ died last week of natural causes. She won three Emmys as Archie Bunker’s long suffering wife from 1971 – 1979. She also had roles in ‘Touched By An Angel’, ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ and ‘Grace Under Fire’. Jean Stapleton was 90.

Channel Seven are set to launch a brand new entertainment and news show to combat Channel Nine’s ‘Nine News Now’. ‘The Daily Edition’ will be hosted by the loveable Sally Obermeder and will feature “the hot issues of the day with lively discussion, interviews and crosses to newsmakers around the country”. No word yet on a timeslot or airdate.

Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj are the latest causalities of this year’s failed ‘American Idol’ series. The feisty pair join Randy Jackson who left the show earlier last month. There’s been no confirmation yet whether Keith Urban is staying on but it is understood the entire show

The always popular ‘Grand Designs’ returns to the ABC this Sunday, June 9 at 7.30pm. This season has already aired on Pay TV but is a first for free-to-air viewers. Episode one kicks off with a fantastic project that will see a ruined castle transformed into a home.

Lastly, there’s some chatter that Nine’s popular ‘Celebrity Apprentice Australia’ could be headed for an ‘All Stars’ version next season. I’m not sure if I’m a fan of this idea but if they can get tough girls like Deni Hines and Roxy Jacenko on board to spice things up, that would make it very interesting. We will just have to wait and see.

But it’s Chef Tomasz who is the star: arms constantly flaying – “I talk with my hands,” he says – he describes in minute detail the food items we are tasting, and the Rosé wines that are made from not only grapes, but from peaches as well… We’re offered one, and wonder if at this early hour it’s a good idea – but seeing our fellow guests getting stuck into theirs, and smacking their lips in satisfaction, we decide that it may be 10am in St Tropez, but it’s got to be “wine o’clock” somewhere else in the world. And our hosts don’t skimp: glasses are filled and re-filled with the different Rosés, empty plates whisked away to be replenished with fresh offerings,… and while Chef Tomasz has said that our tasting will “be about an hour”, we are there for nearly double that, relishing every moment, every mouthful. And when we are told that all good things must reluctantly come to an end, we say fond

with Chef Tomasz at another port, some 25 of SeaDream’s 81 guests enjoying the spectacle of him gesticulating with traders over produce he’s buying for that night’s evening cocktail gathering, and giving us tastings of their local fruits and other freshly picked and made market produce. So popular was it, that today in St Tropez it’s not 25 guests have decided to come along, but well over 60. And we’re well-rewarded: after passing through what we think is just an alleyway of a few small food stores, we emerge into a picturesque village-like square. And Tomasz leads our conga line to an open-fronted wine shop at which the owner has set up trestle tables to which others in the square have brought samples of their produce for us to try alongside his wines. It’s only just after 10 o’clock and there are fewer than a dozen local Tropeziens already out for Sunday shopping: they appear both bemused and delighted at the presence of our group from 14 nations who’ve crowded into their square, some enquiring as to where we are from, others asking our impressions of

thanks and sad farewells to our wonderful Tropezien hosts – while Tomasz and several of his staff whom he’s brought from SeaDream II load up bags and boxes with all manner of the produce we’ve sampled… and which he’ll feature in that night’s regular pre-dinner Cocktails aboard SeaDream II. On the way back to our mega-motor cruiser Chef Tomasz tells us how he’s always loved food and cooking, learning much from his mother whom he idolised for her culinary skills, and which led him to go into cooking school as a teenager. After stints in shore-side restaurants after graduation, he worked on several large ships catering to 2,000 to 3,000 guests each, but quickly decided that that wasn’t for him. So he joined SeaDream Yacht Club in 2002 – and with a maximum of just 112 guests, is just as enthusiastic today as he was when he joined 11 years ago. Where Brigitte Bardot was a pioneer of topless sunbathing on the local beach… and where she later shot to stardom in the 1956 movie ‘And God Created Woman’, leading a million men into premature-gibbering, and in more-severe cases, blindness. But we’re not heading to the beach. Our Pied Piper – in reality Tomasz Kozlowski, executive chef aboard the boutique mega motor-cruiser SeaDream II that’s sailing seven nights from Nice to Barcelona – is leading us to a little town square where he’s organised a tasting of local Rosé wines, cheeses, nuts and olives, breads and biscuits, and what turns out to be a ripper traditional St Tropez onion tart. series. Black Sun Light My Way is the latest installment in this thrilling series and picks up where the last book left off with all the drama and action of the prior book amplified, creating a read that is sure to engross from the first to last page. This time, the protagonists Sierra and Isidro will face even greater evil in a challenge that surmounts anything they’ve ever experienced before. Sierra, who has always battled to control her unique powers, will have to work hard to keep her skills hidden from the threatening Akharians who are drawing closer to Demon’s Spire. In order to save her own life and that of Isidro, Sierra must stay strong and become the master of her behaviour but that is a struggle she can only triumph over with the help of her friends.

Isidro searches through the relics left behind by Ricalan’s last great mage hoping to find the knowledge necessary to help Sierra control her powers but instead he uncovers something different entirely – he discovers his own long-buried talent for magecraft. Disaster strikes when Sierra’s untrainable powers become destructive and she is stuck with nowhere to turn except for the uncertain mercy of an old enemy. Black Sun Light My Way contains all the action and twists of its predecessor Winter Be My Shield, which was nominated for Best Fantasy Novel at the Aurealis Awards. Winter Be My Shield was praised by critics, with Robin Hobb writing: “Unlikely heroes, villains you will cheer for, and cold that eats your bones. Winter Be My Shield will take you to an unforgiving place, but you won’t want to leave it”. Enjoy this thrilling fantasy series by Australian talent Jo Spurrier.
