BECCY’S LITTLE DIARY ENTRIES

03

Beccy Cole tells FYI journalist SHANNON COCHRANE about revealling herself as a lesbian on national television, how she has managed to keep her fans over so many years and “being real”...

I

t’s a long, rough road to success in the music industry but according to Beccy Cole, it’s not just about vocals or catchy riffs. Instead, the veteran performer believes the key to winning the heart of Aussie country fans is simply being yourself. After two decades in the limelight and countless accolades, Cole has well and truly earned herself a place in Australia’s country music hall of fame. But although her anthemic brand of country rock has undoubtedly reeled in fans, Cole claims that her down to earth personality has kept them. “I just think that people like you to be real and they like you to be honest and they like you to be down to earth and I think if you can portray that within your personality as well as your music you’re on the right track,” she said. “I think that they want somebody that’s really real; you give pieces of yourself within the songs. Within country music in this country, they want the kind of artist that they’d like to have at their backyard barbie and I hope I’ve been that for them,” she said. There’s no doubt that Cole is onto a winning formula – she’s celebrating 20 years of music with her newly released album ‘Beccy’s Big Hits’ and a tour, which will reach Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, June 28. Her personal approach has also extended to her album, which features the biggest and best songs handpicked from throughout her career with many addressing her family and friends. “There’s a couple of duets on there, one of them was with Kasey Chambers that means a lot to me because it’s about our friendship; we’ve been friends for about 24 years and

that’s a long time. There’s a duet on there with my mum who got me into singing in the first place, so there are some special moments on the record,” Cole explained. Cole, who celebrated her 40th birthday last year, has grown and changed in the public eye and considers all of her albums to be “little diary entries... different parts of where my mind and heart was at the time”. But undoubtedly the biggest life change Cole has faced happened last year when she appeared on ABC program ‘Australian Story’ to publicly come out as a lesbian. “I think it’s a really important thing... being a country singer, I’m sort of a representative of regional Australia and the amount of feedback I had after my episode of ‘Australian Story’ went to air was overwhelming, the amount of people that said ‘thank you for coming out, thank you for explaining that and thank you for making me believe I’m not the only person in the world who's going through this’,” Cole said. While she might have harboured fears of backlash from fans, Cole has been pleased with the positive reception she has received and believes that public figures have an important role to play in setting an example. “Everything that I worried about for so many years with people finding out has just sort of dissolved in that one opportunity to tell my story, so for me I think it’s an important step for acceptance... it should be normal, it should be every bit as normal... for example, my son has only ever known his mum to be a gay woman so I actually had to tell him the opposite; that a lot of the mums at school won’t have girlfriends like mum, his normal was mum’s liking girls,” she said. Beyond her personal life, Cole has also

My son has only ever known his mum to be a gay woman... had the opportunity to be a role model for young country musicians with her ‘Search for a Shiny Star’ competition, which gives fans the chance to sing on stage at Beccy’s tour. Fans enter by uploading a video of themselves singing, and Cole is given the task of choosing a winner to accompany her on stage at each venue she plays at. “For me, it’s about giving people a go and I know I certainly had a few people who gave me a leg up when I first started and I think you’ve got to extend yourself and be able to realise there’s room for everybody,” she said. It’s likely that the keen young country wannabes are bringing back memories for Cole, who knew she wanted to be a musician

ever since she was a toddler and is still living the dream. “As a kid, I remember this is what I always wanted to do; I always wanted to travel around and be a singer and I feel very blessed to get to do this but for me the greatest achievement has been longevity.”

Beccy Cole will play at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, June 28 at 8pm and Castle Hill RSL on Saturday, June 29 at 8.30pm. Tickets are $30 for adults or $15 for children. For bookings or more information, visit www. beccycole.com.

THE BOOTLEG BEATLES

A

fter starring in a West End play together, four Beatles-loving Englishmen decided to try their luck at creating a tribute show based on their favourite band. Now, 33 years since their formation, The Bootleg Beatles are at the peak of their career. They have played in some of the world’s biggest, most prestigious venues including Wembley Stadium, the Royal Albert Hall, Knebworth, Glastonbury Festival and Budokan Stadium in Tokyo.

They will also be heading down under again by popular demand, with their Australian tour coming to Penrith’s Evan Theatre on Saturday, July 6. Fans can expect to hear faithful renditions of all of The Beatle’s most beloved songs including ‘Penny Lane’, ‘All You Need Is Love’, ‘Eleanor Rigby’ and ‘I Am The Walrus’ as well as many others. The Beatles had so many styles and genres and The Bootleg Beatles concert moves through each phase, with a three-part

show that covers the pop songs of their early career through to the more psychedelic and rocky tunes that were written later. “We’re wearing all the appropriate costumes and hair, growing hair all over the place, moustaches and stuff, and we change the look as we go along... we’re playing with extra musicians which is great on some of the Sergeant Pepper type stuff, it means we can do some of the more intricate songs,” band member Andre Barreau said. Barreau, who plays George Harrison in the

concert, said that all of the band members are long-time Beatles fans and strive to have the most accurate tribute show possible. “I was always a Beatles fan and am still a Beatles fan... I love the music so much... I don’t think I even expected The Beatles music to be as popular as this for this long,” he said. The Bootleg Beatles will play at the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Saturday, July 6. Tickets are $47. For bookings or more information on the show, visit www.penrith. panthers.com.au.

HARRISON CRAIG AT WESTFIELD

H

e wowed the country with his incredible voice and his remarkable story of adversity, and now Harrison Craig is on top of the world. After winning the hit music reality show ‘The Voice’, Harrison is hitting the road and will be appearing at Westfield Penrith on July 6 to meet with his local fans. Fans will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with Harrison in a special concert at the centre, and he’ll sign autographs afterwards. It follows the release of his debut album ‘More than a Dream’ on Monday, which is expected to be a massive hit. “The past few months have been an experience like no other,” Harrison said. “This show, through Seal and the other artists, has given me so much and provided an amazing launch pad into my career. “Seal always said, ‘coaches don’t win, the artists do’, but in this case I feel we both have. I feel I am better because of Seal, and because

of my experience on this show.” Harrison first took the nation’s breath away with his powerful rendition of Josh Groban’s ‘Broken Vow’ in the Blind Auditions, a performance that made all four coaches; Seal, Joel Madden, Delta Goodrem and Ricky Martin, turn their chairs. He chose Seal, last year’s winning coach, to guide him on his journey to victory on ‘The Voice’. In the Battle Rounds, Harrison was paired with 27-year-old music pastor Tim Moxey, performing the Josh Groban classic, ‘You Raise Me Up’. Seal chose Harrison as the winner of that battle taking him through to the Showdowns, where he sang Michael Buble’s ‘Home’. This brilliant performance won him the audience vote and he progressed to the Live Shows as part of Team Seal’s top four. Harrison continued his unique “popera” style through the Live Shows, performing Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’, Michael Buble’s ‘It Had Better Be Tonight’, ‘If’ by Bread, the Righteous Brothers’ ‘Unchained

BUDDY HOLLY SPECTACULAR WILL THRILL

U

ndoubtedly one of the most iconic figures in the music world, Buddy Holly influenced many and now his style and songs are being relived in a tribute show. Performer Paul McCann will be bringing the music of Buddy Holly to Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, July 12. His show ‘Buddy, The Buddy Holly Spectacular’ will see him take on the classic rock and roll tunes of the legendary Holly, whose music paved the way for so many acts after him. Holly shot to fame with his band ‘The Crickets’, a Texas-based quartet that found success with their hit records ‘That’ll Be the Day’, ‘Maybe Baby’, ‘Oh, Boy!’ and ‘Not Fade Away’. Other songs made famous by Holly include ‘I’m Gonna Love You Too’, ‘Peggy Sue’, ‘Rave On’, ‘Words of Love’ and ‘Everyday’. While Holly tragically passed away after an aeroplane crash in 1959, his music has lasted

on for over 50 years and his talent inspired many musicians. Now, in this entertaining homage, Irishborn musician Paul McCann will delight fans with his touching tribute. McCann is a seasoned musician who began formal music training at the tender age of four-years-old and has been performing on a professional basis since he was 15. He has performed at venues all over the globe, from his native Ireland and the United Kingdom to Australia, the South Pacific and Asia. His lively stage presence and musical talent have helped him win over audiences in a variety of shows including a John Lennon tribute show and his solo cabaret show ‘Lights, Music, Comedy!’ With a cool, retro-inspired atmosphere and fantastic set list with all of Buddy Holly’s hits, this is a night of entertainment not to be missed by anyone who loves old-fashioned tunes.

The event is part of a cabaret lunch special, and the tickets include a Zest Wok n’ Grill lunch voucher valued at $15, a complimentary beverage, free raffle tickets and a cup of tea or coffee and cake.

T

he men who served in Vietnam did so much for our country and now a special concert will be held in their honour. The ‘Pioneers of Australian Rock and Roll Show’ will be held at Windsor RSL on Saturday, June 29 and dedicated to the local Vietnam veterans. As the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War approaches, this show promises to be a timely walk down memory lane with seasoned performers Digger Revell and Ronald Storm providing classic entertainment for the audience. Talented musician Digger Revell made a total of 11 tours of Vietnam, entertaining both the Aussie soldiers and the American and Canadian troops during their time overseas. He made more visits to the area than any other entertainer and spent a grand total of three and a half years in the war zones of Vietnam. His devotion is remembered even today as

Revell still receives messages from Americans who recall fond memories of his performances. Revell’s musical director John Charter, who will be lead the band at the Windsor RSL concert, was also present in Vietnam. Digger Revell first began his musical career in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s when he went to suburban dances and rubbed shoulders with local talents including Col Jaye, Dig Richards and Johnny O’Keefe. From there, he formed rock group The Denvermen in 1960 and had six number one hits including ‘Surfside’ and ‘Avalon Stomp’. Revell also appeared on television and became a regular performer on Channel 7’s ‘Teen Time’, as well as ‘Bandstand’, ‘The Ray Martin Show’ and many others. In 1963, he performed alongside international greats Chubby Checker and Bobby Rydell at the Sydney Stadium in front of 15,000 giddy, screaming fans. While Revell had a wildly successful career that influenced the development of Australian

Lead and slide guitarist Richards is a veteran of the Sydney music scene and has played in a variety of bands including Rhythm Antics, Double Edge and Raw Edge. With their talented band members and

CALL OUT TO EVERY BELIEBER!

C

alling all ‘beliebers’ – the wait is over as teen singing sensation Justin Bieber is finally set to grace our shores for his first ever Aussie tour. The best-selling singer will be visiting Australia at the end of this year, playing at Sydney’s Allphones Arena on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30. After much anticipation from his Australian fans, Bieber will bring his ‘Believe’ tour to the country after wowing audiences at over 150 shows across the globe throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The tour has been a labour of love for Bieber, who rehearsed for 10 hours per day over a period of two months. The show has received rave reviews from both audiences and music critics alike who got caught up in the wave of Bieber fever. And to give you just a taste of the atmosphere, the Hollywood Reporter wrote that: “Hundreds of thousands of shrieking

fans, many donning homemade T-shirts, singing, crying, dancing and yes, wearing out their vocal cords with screams, turned the downtown LA arena into a virtual spaceship from another planet”. Bieber first shot to fame as a baby faced teen posting videos on YouTube and racking up over 10 million viewers by word of mouth. His cover videos of pop songs by Justin Timberlake, Ne-Yo and Stevie Wonder brought Bieber to the attention of manager Scoot Braun, who then signed him. He also earned a mentor in the form of musician Usher, and a record deal with exclusive label Island Def Jam Records. Since then, Bieber has become one of the world’s most recognisable pop icons, having won two Artist of the Year American Music Awards and sold 15 million albums worldwide. His concerts are a larger-than-life experience, with Bieber inspired by Michael Jackson’s phenomenal shows from the 80’s and 90’s and aiming to make you ‘believe in

magic again’ with a spectacular show filled with lights, sound and pyrotechnics. Justin Bieber will bring the ‘Believe’ tour to Sydney’s Allphones Arena on Friday,

November 29 and Saturday, November 30. Tickets go on sale on Monday, July 1 at 10am. For bookings or more information, call 132 849 or visit www.ticketek.com.au.

nyone who loves games involving alternate history and war plotlines will enjoy ‘Company of Heroes 2’, which allows players to strategise and command the Soviet Red Army in the battle to fight off German invaders. All of the player’s intellectual might is going to be necessary to think up military tactics to hold the power in the game’s brutal conflict, in which the goal is to free Russia from invasion. To achieve the aim of the game, players will have to use new commander abilities to direct the iconic Red Army and experience the violent, up-close brutality of frontline warfare. The sequel to the highest rated strategy game of all-time, ‘Company of Heroes 2’ has all of the action and engagement of its predecessor with a bunch of new features including cuttingedge technology which means better, clearer graphics. Another cool aspect of the latest game is the ColdTech dynamic weather feature that will affect the performance of your troops and potentially change the game’s outcome.

e may now be more famous for being a bodybuilding hero turned governor but Arnold Schwarzenegger has proven that he can still turn out a good action flick with his film ‘The Last Stand’. His big screen comeback is a violent, action-filled affair that tells the story of crime fighting in small town America. Schwarzenegger plays Sheriff Ray Owens, a disheartened police officer who used to work on the tough streets of Los Angeles but quit after an accident crippled his partner and killed his spirit. He moves to a quiet border town in Arizona where he spends most of his time trying to counter petty crime. His boring job is livened up when international drug baron Gabriel Cortez, who is on the run from the FBI and speeds through the town towards Mexico taking a hostage with him. When a local farmer is found killed, Owens and his colleagues trace the crime back to Cortez’s gang members and try to foil their plans to cross the border. Overall this film is a classic good versus evil showdown.

COMPANY OF HEROES 2 [ Rated MA15+]

he former frontman of rock band Powderfinger is back with his second solo album ‘Departures’. After his first album, ‘Tea and Sympathy’, won three ARIA Awards and an APRA Award, Fanning had a difficult task in making a record that was even bigger and better, but ‘Departures’ seems to have done the job. Fans and the public are already impressed with Fanning’s work, with ‘Departures’ going straight to number one on the ARIA Albums Chart. The music is more reminiscent of his rock-oriented work with Powderfinger than the country-folk inspired hybrid of ‘Tea and Sympathy’ and there are a number of classic songs that are destined to be hits. The lead single ‘Battleships’ is a catchy, memorable tune while ‘Grow Around You’ is another great song that was practically made for the radio. One of the stand out tracks is ‘Departures (Blue Toowong Skies)’, an unusually melodic, soft and emotional song that listeners will enjoy. Overall, the tracks on ‘Departures’

give Fanning a chance to demonstrate his strong, harmonic vocals and also his skills as a songwriter and guitarist. While the music doesn’t do much exploration in terms of genre or style and is similar to his work with Powerfinger, it’s still a pleasant listening experience.

OLD CRICKET GROUND CREATES REAL FLAVOUR

by David Ellis

W

hen you buy an obsolete cricket ground that’s heard the thwack of bat on ball for a-near half-century and replant it with a vineyard, it’s probably only natural that you’ll give one of your cricket ground vineyard wines a cricketing moniker. And that’s just what Jim Barry Wines did when they bought the old Penola Cricket Ground in South Australia’s Coonawarra in 1996, when the game ended there after some 46 seasons. They planted most of it, except for the pitch and a small area around it, as well as close to 12ha (30 acres) outside the fence, with cabernet sauvignon, and labelled the resultant wine The Cover Drive. Their now just-released The Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 is a drop to enjoy at this time of year with a hearty winter’s Sunday roast, or to cellar away for three to five years. It’s nose exhibits a delightful blend of dried herbs, cedar, cassis and sandalwood, and the palate has rewarding velvety fine tannins

coupled with nuances of briary fruit and wood from 12 months in 50 per cent American and 50 per cent French oak. Pay $22.95 and you’ll realise why Jim Barry Wines wanted to get their hands on this great 12ha site sitting over some of Coonawarra’s finest terra rossa soil. One to note: At the time Lindeman’s launched their Early Harvest range of lighter alcohol and calories wines in 2007, they did so with just two labels: today they have eleven wines now made to this growing-in-popularity lower alcohol/calories format. The latest is the Early Harvest Pinot Grigio that is the first lighter alcohol/calories pinot grigio on the market, and well timed to capitalise on the growing popularity of the variety whose sales under all labels are increasing at 22 per cent year-on-year. And despite Early Harvest Pinot Grigio is just eight per cent alcohol, it’s got refreshing crunchy apple and pear flavours and balanced acidity going for just $14.99.

he Star Buffet at Penrith RSL is by far the region’s most popular dining spot – even on a weekday there are hundreds of locals enjoying everything this allyou-can-eat restaurant has to offer – and with good reason too. Star Buffet presents an incredible range of dishes from all over the world. Start in Asia and enjoy honey chicken, crispy spring rolls, satay chicken, Mongolian beef, chilli mussels, special fried rice, noodles and a range of dim sims and hot steamed pork buns. The garlic prawns with fried bok choi cannot be surpassed and the steamed prawn dumplings are delicious. Then, head to the Chinese barbeque station to pick from a selection of marinated meats including roasted duck, char sui (BBQ Pork), crispy pork belly, honey soy chicken and more. Be sure to make a stopover at Japan with a sushi and sashimi train offering a range of nori rolls, hand rolls, chicken and avocado sushi and Japanese salad. For those who love fresh seafood and salads, head to the salad bar at the back of the restuarant. Though you won’t find many kids in this section, you will find delectable fresh prawns, mussels and squid. There also seafood based salads, as well as the traditional range of garden salad, greek

salad and caesar salad. And don’t miss out on the freshly cut avocado! But if your tastebuds are craving modern Australian cuisine, head to the carvery where you will find the freshest array of salmon, fish, seafood, beef, pork, lamb and chicken. Enjoy these succulent meats with baked potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Whilst it is tempting to go back for second and third servings of the main meals – and many people do – I suggest you leave enough room for dessert, because Star Buffet has really excelled in offering a delectable range of sweets, cakes, slices, fresh fruit and to top it off, their very own mouth-watering fondue fountain. Just some of my own, personal favourites are the apple and berry crumble pie, the vanilla slice, the ingenious chocolate mousse and marshmellow dessert served in a shot glass, chocolate cakes and the creme brulee. There’s also a soft serve icecream machine and homemade biscuits to eat alongside a fresh made cup of tea or coffee. Perfect for a big family celebration, there is plenty of seating and plenty of food on offer at the best buffet dining restaurant in Penrith. The Star Buffet is located inside Penrith RSL on Tindale Street, Penrith. Call them for more information or to make a booking on 4728 5277. - Reviewed by Cassandra O’Connor

ames Gandolfini, who played one of the greatest TV characters of all time, died last week whilst on holiday in Italy. Gandolfini played the infamous mob boss Tony Soprano in the hit television series ‘The Sopranos’. It’s believed the 51-year-old died after a possible heart attack. Gandolfini won three Emmy awards for his incredible portrayal, which spanned six memorable seasons. He will be missed. ‘Sunrise’ presenter Melissa Doyle has quit the hit breakfast program after 14 years. Doyle will be replaced by the very likable and sometimes playful Sam Armytage, who’s one of Channel Seven’s best talents. Even though

I’m sure she’s a lovely person in real life, I never quite warmed to Doyle. I always thought she came across fake and annoying, so I’m very pleased she’s finally moving off my TV screen five days a week. Apparently she’s set to head up a new prime-time news program for Seven in the coming months. Former ‘Packed to the Rafters’ star Hugh Sheridan is returning to Channel Seven to star in the highly anticipated mini-series ‘Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story of INXS’. Sheridan will play bass guitarist Garry Gary Beers. One of the greatest reality show contests of all time, ‘The Mole’, is returning to Channel

Seven next week. The new series hosted by Shura Taft will premiere this Tuesday, July 2 at 7.30pm. The show will then continue 7.30pm Wednesday and 8pm Thursday. ‘The Mole’ hasn’t aired since 2005, so expect many people tuning in for the first few episodes. It may have taken a while to find its feet but ‘House Rules’ has done well for Seven. It all wraps up this Monday night at 7.30pm. Also wrapping up after five years on Nine is daytime panel show ‘The View’, which aired its final episode today. Nine has decided not to renew its contract for the series which will be replaced by boring repeats of ‘Sea Patrol’.

Charlie Sheen has sacked his co-star Selma Blair from his unfunny series ‘Anger Management’. It’s understood Sheen and Blair didn’t see eye to eye, and Sheen basically told producers “if she doesn’t go, I will”. Lastly, Channel Seven has won the rights to air the 2013 Rugby League World Cup in October and November. Seven will screen every game of the 14 country tournament live on 7Mate. It will be interesting to see how Seven deliver rugby league after so many years on Nine and FOX. Although, it’s understood the BBC and Premier Sport will produce the coverage, meaning Seven’s involvement could be confined to a logo in the corner.

DON’T DECRY THE KISS OF NELSON IN PORTSMOUTH by David Ellis

M

uch has been said, written, researched and further researched about the dying words of Vice Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. The war hero led the British against France and Spain in the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805, the battle that gave England its greatest ever sea victory to that time – but at the cost of the loss of its greatest-ever naval commander. In his final minutes, his shoulder was shattered by a bullet that then lodged in his spine. Horatio Nelson, laying amongst fellow officers and ordinary seamen also suffering horrific injuries below deck on the Victory, had whispered to his friend and Captain of his ship, Captain Thomas Hardy: “Kiss me, Hardy”. To many in the prim society of the time, it was an absolute outrage to suggest that a Naval Commander would request that a subordinate kiss him – worse still in public – with many complaining that the very notion bordered almost on homosexuality, and scandalised highest British society and all other officers of the Navy… many of whom, of course, came from that very core of British high society.

Thus countless attempts were made to suggest that in fact Admiral Nelson had used the word “kismet”, which came from the Arabic language (and Nelson was familiar with that part of the world) which meant “fate”. Thus by muttering “Kismet, Hardy” Nelson in his dying minutes had simply acknowledged his fate to his friend. Captain Hardy acceded to Nelson's request and kissed him gently on the cheek and then the forehead, just minutes before Nelson died at 4.30pm on October 21, 1805 – just three hours after the Battle of Trafalgar had begun. But try telling the folk of historic Portsmouth in England's south, where the fully-restored HMS Victory is now a maritime museum, that Lord Nelson had said anything other than “Kiss me, Hardy” and you'll be facing your own scaled-down Battle of Trafalgar. For here, Horatio Nelson is a local hero of extraordinary note, and whomever you speak with will very quickly tell you his words were simply in keeping with the sensitive and emotional character of this great man. After all, they’ll point out, just hours before

his death as his ships sailed into battle, Horatio Nelson had written a new Will aboard the Victory in which he had left his entire worldly possessions to his mistress, Lady Emma Hamilton and their illegitimate daughter, Horatia Nelson Thompson. Plus, as he lay dying, he had also confided in Captain Hardy of the Will, saying to him: “Take care of my dear Lady Hamilton, Hardy; take care of my poor Lady Hamilton.” And after he had requested Captain Hardy to “Kiss me, Hardy”, he had commented: “Now I am satisfied. Thank God I have done my duty”. Also, Portsmouth’s folk will proudly tell you, the most credible of witnesses later attested to Nelson’s famous last words, including his Chaplain aboard HMS Victory, Alexander Scott and the ship’s surgeon, William Beatty who was attending Nelson in that confined space below deck. After his death, Nelson’s body was preserved in a cask of brandy that was lashed to the Victory’s mast to be taken back to England at battle’s end, and the news of his death rushed ahead by the small schooner, Pickle.

Nelson’s fleet of 27 fighting ships, Portsmouth’s citizens will boast, routed the larger enemy fleet of 33 ships: England lost no ships, France and Spain lost 18 of their 33; England lost 1,700 killed or wounded, France and Spain 6,000 and many hundreds more taken prisoner. A visit to HMS Victory in Portsmouth is a must on any England holiday trip. Take the opportunity there to also see the oldest dry-dock in the world – it was built in 1496 and is still in use today – while Portsmouth is also now home to Royal Navy and Royal Marine Commandos. Plus the circa-1861 HMS Warrior there is the world’s first armour-plated, iron-hulled warship and was fully-restored in the 1960s, while the remains of the warship Mary Rose that was built in 1511 can also be seen in Portsmouth. And of course it was from Portsmouth that the 11 ships of the First Fleet set sail for Australia on May 13, 1787 under the command of Captain (and Governor-designate) Arthur Phillip. There’s plenty of history at the docks of Portsmouth so head there and have a look.

here are only 200 sleeps till Christmas. Or... is it only a month away? mentioned that the interest in Christmas in July has steadily risen over the years. “We are now open up five days a week, 9am till 5pm.” With a megastore now open in Mosman, it is obvious that Christmas is not the only time of year to get your decorations. “It isn’t just homes that need sprucing up,” Russel said. “We don’t just do homes. Rudolph’s Christmas can do commercial decorating; anything from homes to hotels.” This is an ideal way to warm up the feeling within the office, or ensure hotel guests get into the spirit of Christmas in July. THE BLING RING: HOW A GANG OF FAMEOBSESSED TEENS RIPPED OFF HOLLYWOOD AND SHOCKED THE WORLD By Nancy Jo Sales

T

ake the opportunity to read about one of the most bizarre true crime stories of the 21st century in new novel The Bling Ring. Written by award-winning journalist Nancy Jo Sales, The Bling Ring: How A Gang of Fame-obsessed Teens Ripped off Hollywood and Shocked the World recounts the now infamous tale of seven Californian teenage girls who allegedly burgled the lavish homes of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Over the space of one year, these audacious young women used Google maps, Facebook and celebrity gossip site TMZ to keep tabs on their celebrity targets’ whereabouts and then proceeded to break and enter, with many of the houses having poor security. Rich and famous stars including Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom, Rachel Bilson and others were robbed of over $3 million worth of clothing, jewellery, shoes and handbags. The perpetrators were dubbed ‘the bling ring’ by the media, with the public fascinated

by the gang of beautiful, privileged, wild-living women who didn’t fit the profile of a typical criminal. As the details of the case unfolded in the news, people began questioning why a group of teenagers who already had plenty of money and material possessions would take such a dire risk. Vanity Fair writer Sales went in search for the answer, using her exclusive access to the teens to trace the details of the crimes minute by minute and delve into the background and motive of the perpetrators. Her article ‘The Suspects Wore Louboutins’ was used as the basis for the Sofia Coppola film ‘The Bling Ring’, which premiered in Australia in June at the Sydney Film Festival. Sales is an award-winning journalist who has written for Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar and more. She has written profiles of many figures including Damien Hirst, Hugh Hefner, Russell Simmons, Donald Trump, Tyra Banks, Angelina Jolie, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Taylor Swift.
