SHANNON COCHRANE discovers the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre has something for everyone in their much anticipated 2014 season...
T
he Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, which is arguably the best arts venue in western Sydney, is set to officially begin its 2014 season, with the program kicking off in February and providing fine entertainment through to November. With a line-up that will see internationally recognised artists grace the Joan stage, the 2014 season has acts that will suit any taste, from opera galas to edgy, thought-provoking plays to Shakespeare and more. The year will involve big names such as opera star Yvonne Kenny and virtuoso Simon Tedeschi appearing for a fundraising Gala Concert, as well as visiting theatre companies like Belvoir, Shake & Stir, Force Majeure, STC and Bell Shakespeare. Music aficionados will enjoy the beautiful classical tunes of the Richard Bonynge Piano Series, which will feature five acclaimed pianists: Roger Woodward, Alexey Yemtsov, Tamara-Anna Cislowska, Avan Yu and Elena Kats-Chernin. Katrina Douglas, the Director of Performing Arts for the Centre, said that 2014 will be an impressive year for the Joan’s music shows. “For music audiences, it’s probably one of our strongest fine music seasons… the Richard Bonynge Piano Series is outstanding and you won’t see those kind of internationally renowned musicians perform in a series like that. I can’t even think of anywhere else that presents that kind of series,” she said. There are plenty of fun, contemporary shows on offer as well, including the amazing Djuki Mala (also known as the Chooky Dancers), the Sydney premiere of Circus Oz’s new show, the return of the ever popular Wharf Revue and ‘STEVIE – The Life and Music of

Stevie Wright and the Easybeats’. The season will begin on Wednesday, February 19 with the world premiere of Q Theatre and PACT co-production ‘A Boy and a Bean’, devised by and starring former Emu Plains resident Nick Atkins, who tackles the issue of marriage equality in an off-beat and tender way. Ms Douglas said that Atkins’ play was one of the shows that she considered to be a highlight of the season, especially since Atkins began his theatrical career in the local area. “I’m really excited about ‘A Boy and A Bean’, and Nick’s work. Nick is a really fantastic young artist who has worked with the Q Theatre and the Joan over many years. He first started performing on the Q stages in high school, then he went and trained and became a performance artist… he’s one of our regular teaching artists,” she said. The Chooky Dancers, who will be appearing at the Joan in mid-May, are another upcoming act that Ms Douglas believes will delight Penrith residents. “The Chooky Dancers are great, I’ve seen them perform before in Darwin. They’re such a fun, energetic, incredibly funny group of dancers and audiences just love them. I just know their show’s going to be really exciting. We only have a very short season and I think anyone who comes to see that will just be thrilled by it, and just enjoy it so much,” Ms Douglas said. An entertaining, beautiful fusion of traditional aboriginal and contemporary dance has made the Chooky Dancers a global hit with their YouTube videos reaching millions of viewers. Their performance at the Joan will mark the group’s first visit to western Sydney.

It’s really great to have internationally renowned exciting performances Ms Douglas works with fellow directors Valda Silvy and James Fischer on the Joan’s season, putting together the program 18 months in advance to ensure the venue has the best line-up possible, trying to appeal to different audience tastes. “We worked hard to try to find a season that would provide something for everybody. Certainly, we’ve got shows like ‘Calendar Girls’ for people who love that really fun night out… and then a show like ‘1984’ which has got something like 76 television screens on stage, is very much targeting that younger audience. Young people who are digitally aware and active on social media will really enjoy that show. It’ll blow them away,” she said. She said that the Joan Sutherland
Performing Arts Centre was an important institution, as it gives people in the western suburbs the chance to experience acclaimed cultural and theatrical performances. “It’s vital that arts centres like the Joan are around, otherwise a lot of those acts would not be able to come out here… it’s really great to have those kind of internationally renowned, exciting performances within a local region where people don’t have to travel an hour or an hour and a half to get to.”

DIE-HARD FANS LOVE NEARLY NEIL
S
ince he began his performing career 18 years ago, Canadian Bobby Bruce has sold out shows and wowed audiences with his authentic, passionate tribute to the legendary singer Neil Diamond. Australian fans of Diamond will now have the opportunity to see the closest imitation to their idol when Bruce brings his ‘Nearly Neil’ show to the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Friday, January 31. Critics have hailed Bruce’s show as being “the next best thing to the real Neil” and the performer has received accolades around the globe for his brilliant voice and strong stage presence. Performing a fantastic set list of classic Diamond hits, Bruce manages to use his powerful vocals and sense of rhythm to pull off fan favourites. Tracks include ‘Cracklin’ Rosie’, ‘Kentucky Woman’, ‘Cherry Cherry’, ‘Sweet Caroline’, ‘Holly Holy’, ‘Solitary Man’ and ‘Song Sung
Blue’. Bruce manages to capture the essence of Diamond’s performance of each song while also adding his own artistic flair. Bruce discovered his talent when he was in his teens, and used his ability to impersonate Neil Diamond and other famous voices as a party trick. His hobby turned into a profession when Bruce was 25-years-old and spotted by an Elvis impersonator, who heard him sing a Neil Diamond song and encouraged him to begin performing. Since then, Bruce has forged an impressive career, playing Neil Diamond in the ‘Legends of Vegas’ show in the United States and taking his tribute shows to countries all around the world. He has performed in Australia many times at over 60 venues across the country as part of the ‘Legends of Rock’ show, as well as appearing on local television programs. While Neil Diamond fans will no doubt be
loyal to the iconic singer, critics have praised Bruce’s tribute show, with Canadian journalist John MacKay writing: “Bobby Bruce does Neil Diamond maybe better than the original”. Bobby Bruce will bring his show ‘Nearly
Neil’ to the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Friday, January 31 at 8pm. Tickets are $25 for visitors and free for members. For bookings or more information, visit www.penrith.panthers. com.au.
they all made.” Milan said she intends on sharing the music from her new album with audiences on her tour, with shows planned to be a mixture of relaxation and fun along with some quirkiness
and romance. Nicola Milan will perform at Foundry 616 in Sydney on Friday, January 24. Tickets are $20. For bookings or more information, visit www. foundry616.com.au.
JAZZ SCENE: MILAN’S THE NEW LONDON
W
ith her silky voice and beautiful looks, it’s no surprise that Australian songstress Nicola Milan is regularly compared to old school
jazz divas. The performer, who is based in Western Australia, is heading out on tour to promote her latest album ‘Forbidden Moments’, which was released last year. She will be playing at Foundry 616 in Sydney on Friday, January 24, which will be her only show in New South Wales before she heads off for Brisbane. Jazz lovers will enjoy Milan’s music, which has been likened to that of Julie London, Norah Jones, Melody Grant, Eva Cassidy and Diana Krall. Her combination of smooth, soulful vocals and jazz tinged with world music, blues, folk and Latin rhythms has made Milan a rising name in Australian music. The singer has also earned international acclaim, placing as a finalist in the UK
International Songwriting Contest, the Australian Songwriting Competition and more recently the 2013 John Lennon International Songwriting Contest. ‘Forbidden Moments’ follows on from the success of Milan’s 2011 EP ‘Little Rendezvous’, which peaked at number one on the jazz charts in Honolulu and Wisconsin in the USA, getting her a fan base overseas. The her latest record took two years to write and put together, with Milan taking care to perfect each song with the help of her musicians. “Forbidden Moments was intended to be a relaxing, easy listening album and I think it achieves that. It was definitely a labour of love and I spent hours working on the arrangements of the songs and deciding which instruments to place where,” she said. “The musicians who recorded on the album were fantastic and put their opinions into the mix during rehearsal and I can’t thank them enough for the enormous contribution

f you’ve ever wanted to be part of a Guinness World Record attempt, then here is your chance. The organisers of the Blue Mountains Charleston Challenge are aiming to smash their own Guinness World Record for the largest Charleston dance on the planet, and are inviting members of the public to join in on the fun. The Charleston is a dance that became popular in the 1920s, during the era of jazz music, speakeasies and Flappers. The annual dance challenge will be held in Leura Mall on Saturday, February 1 and marks the official beginning of the popular Blue Mountains Lithgow and Oberon Tourism event, ‘Roaring 20s Festival and all that Jazz!’. Festival producer Sandy Luxford has already experienced the thrill of making history with last year’s Charleston challenge, which successfully made it into the Guinness World Record books. “Last year we set a new Guinness World
Record with 276 dancers. Not only was the day fabulous fun, it was very exciting to receive an official letter from Guinness World Records in England in July confirming our achievement,” Ms Luxford said. Not satisfied with being the current record-holder, Ms Luxford would like the Blue Mountains Charleston Challenge to again achieve glory and beat their own record, aiming to get 300 participants to dance all at the same time in the same location. “If everyone who took part last year returned with a friend then that figure would be easy to reach,” she said. “You don’t have to be a professional dancer to take part – just dressed in 1920s costume and able to dance for five minutes.” This year’s ‘Roaring 20s’ festival will feature fashion designer and television personality Claudia Chan Shaw as patron, bringing her knowledge of vintage clothing and passion for 1920’s glamour to the event. Aspiring dancers can download the dance

POWER POP DUO HIT THE CLARENDON
T
wo American masters of power pop, Ken Stringfellow and Chris Stamey, are teaming up to tour Australia together for the first time. Particularly exciting for local audiences, the duo will be performing at the Clarendon Guesthouse in Katoomba on Friday, January 31. Both Stringfellow and Stamey are in the country to participate in the Sydney Festival, and recently played at the Enmore Theatre in the show ‘Big Star’s Third’, alongside wellknown musicians from Australia and abroad. The show was a tribute to the cult rock group Big Star, which Stringfellow was a member of for 17 years, and involved an allstar cast uniting to perform the band’s third album ‘Sister Lovers’. Stringfellow and Stamey were joined by musicians Mike Mills from R.E.M., Mitch Easter and Jody Stephens as well as vocalists Cat Power, Kurt Vile, Edwyn Collins, Skylar Gudasz, Brett Harris, Tim Rogers, Dave
Faulkner and Kim Salmon. Their sideshow at the Clarendon promises to be just as entertaining, with each musician bringing a unique style to the stage. While Stringfellow may have played with Big Star for more than a decade, he is best known as being a founding member of The Posies and has also collaborated with R.E.M. and acted as a producer on acclaimed albums by Damien Jurado and The Long Winters. He has created four solo albums too, which were received well by critics at indie music news sources ‘Pitchfork’ and ‘Mojo’, and the release of his latest solo album ‘Danzig in the Moonlight’ coincides with his Australian tour this month. His tour buddy Stamey is renowned for his involvement with the American power pop scene and as a founder of the group The dB’s, which released two critically acclaimed records ‘Stands for Decibels’ and ‘Repercussion’. Stamey is also a producer and has worked in the studio with acts such as Michael
Stipe, Yo La Tengo, Matthew Sweet and Whiskeytown. Ken Stringfellow and Chris Stamey will perform at the Clarendon Guesthouse in
Katoomba on Friday, January 31. For bookings or more information, visit www.clarendonguesthouse.com.au or call 4782 1322.

eartthrob Leonardo di Caprio has come a long way since ‘Titanic’, starring in this R-rated depiction of 1980s excess. He plays Jordan Belfort, the real-life stock brocker who authored the memoir that ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ is based on. After losing his job at a prestigious Wall Street firm during a massive market crash, Belfort begins working in the smaller (and dodgier) business of dealing penny stocks. He impresses his colleagues with his charming and effective sales techniques, and goes on to accumulate a small fortune. He opens his own firm with some friends, which thrives and becomes a major company, and Belfort transgresses into a seedy lifestyle filled with drugs and wild parties. Divorcing his wife, Belfort falls in love with and marries a woman he met at a party and the couple have a daughter, but his stint as a father doesn’t stop his debauched lifestyle. With the FBI hot on his tail and investigating him for money laundering, Belfort’s life begins to spin out of control.

cAlister Kemp are one of the biggest acts in Australian country music, and have now released their keenly anticipated album ‘Harder to Tame’. The record marks a new direction for the country duo, with the album featuring cutting-edge mainstream country while also sticking true to the down-to-earth country values that McAlister Kemp have become famed for among fans. The band worked with acclaimed Nashville producer Jeremy Stover (who produced the current Billboard charting hit ‘Point At You’ by Justin Moore), and the results are a big, rocky twist on McAlister Kemp’s classic country sound. The lead single, which shares its name with the album, was released last year, giving fans a preview of their new style. Other tracks include ‘Night On Fire’, ‘There’s Always A Girl’, ‘To Say I Love You’ and ‘The Only Way I Know How’. The band said the album reflects the style McAlister Kemp wants to pursue in the future: “‘Harder To Tame’ launches with a new direction for MK! This album
is the album we always wanted to make with a collection of powerful songs recorded with hit-making producer Jeremy Stover in Nashville. It’s a new chapter in our career”.

HERITAGE AND PASSION: CALABRIA FAMILY WINES by David Ellis
O
ne of the country’s most successful family winemakers, Westend Estate at Griffith in the NSW Riverina, has changed its name to Calabria Family Wines to reflect its second and third generation family involvement in the running of the company. Established by Francesco and Elisabetta Calabria after they migrated to Griffith in 1945 to grow fruit and vegetables – and with their first wines made in the family laundry – the company is now a multi-million-dollar enterprise with 60 employees, a 15,000 tonne state-of-the-art winery at Griffith, vineyard interests in the Riverina, Barossa Valley and NSW’s Hilltops, a dozen wine brands, and with annual exports to 25 countries including the USA, UK, Russia, New Zealand and Asia. Announcing Westend Estate’s namechange to Calabria Family Wines, Sales and Marketing Manager Andrew Calabria said: “Making wine is our life. We embody family heritage and passion, and believe we need to
differentiate ourselves from today’s corporate world of winemaking, by highlighting we are the family behind the company. “The change also honours the extraordinary efforts of our father, Bill Calabria (one of Francesco and Elisabetta’s five sons) as Managing Director and Chief Winemaker – he has been an inspiration to each and every one of the family throughout our lives, and equally so to our wonderfully dedicated work force. “We see the Calabria name on every bottle being a flag-bearer of personal involvement, dedication and quality.” One of the first releases under Calabria Family Wines is a 2011 Calabria Bros Barossa Shiraz, a wine from 100-year-old vines that thrive in the Barossa’s Mediterranean-like climate, and that’s rich and full-bodied with ripe plum flavours, spicy vanillin oak, and a long, fine-grained tannin finish. Pay $26 and enjoy with flame-grilled fillet of beef and a good splash of red wine jus.

hannel Nine’s blockbuster summer series ‘Hostages’ has wrapped up, with the final episode airing last week. The show didn’t quite set the world on fire ratings-wise and the Christmas/New Year break probably hurt its momentum leading up to the crucial episodes. It hasn’t been renewed for a second season, but judging on how the finale wrapped up all the storylines, one probably wasn’t expected. Another show that will wrap up production is ‘The Newsroom’, the HBO series that airs on Foxtel here in Australia. The show has been renewed for a third season but will finish up after that. If you haven’t managed to stumble
Actor and comedian Shane Bourne will host this year’s Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTAs), broadcast in a special 90-minute presentation on Thursday, January 30, at 8.30pm on Ten. A seasoned presenter and host, Shane will lead the night of peer-voted awards, live performances and special appearances from personalities across the Australian television and film industry. On landing the host’s role, Shane said: “I am really looking forward to being involved in the Third AACTA Awards and providing the social lubricant to help ensure a great night for all as we celebrate the year’s achievements in television and film.” TEN’s broadcast will begin straight from the red carpet, with Wake Up’s Natarsha Belling and James Mathison covering all the best AACTAs fashion and chatting to your favourite stars as they make their way into the ceremony. Channel Nine would be pleasantly surprised by the incredible ratings figures the cricket has produced this year. For example, Nine’s coverage of the Brisbane ODI match attracted a national peak audience of more than 2.679 million and an average audience of 1.798 million. They are figures that most TV executives only dream about. Leila McKinnon will host Nine’s new
current affairs show, ‘Inside Story’. Reporters will include Tom Steinfort, Alicia Loxley and Peter Stefanovic. The show will cover themed topics, such as real life crimes, human dramas, adventures, mysteries and medical miracles, with reporters talking to McKinnon in a studio. New episodes of ‘Law and Order: SVU’ return to Channel Ten next Thursday night. A classic “Whodunnit” episode will air at 10pm next Thursday, where we also gain some critical insight into newbie Detective Rollin’s (Kelli Giddish) character. True Blood stars J. Smith-Cameron and Carrie Preston also make an appearance in this episode which sees Detectives Benson and Rollins struggle to piece together what really happened to a
young woman who is alleged to have been raped at a mental hospital. ‘Home and Away’ returns to screens at 7pm next Monday night. Summer Bay fans will finally get to find out who survived the cliffhanger bomb. This show just keeps delivering... even after so long on the air. The question remains, where is the most dangerous place in Australia to live – Summer Bay or Mount Thomas? Some sad TV news this past week with Dave Madden, best known as band manager ‘Reuben Kincaid’ on The Partridge Family, passing away aged 82. Additional reporting by Troy Dodds

THE SPARKLE OF LOVE LASTS IN SPAIN’S FREIXENET WINES by David Ellis
W
hen Dolores Sala Vive and Pedro Ferrer Bosch fell madly in love in the early 1900s, little did they realise that the sparkle they would bring into each other’s lives would engulf millions of others in some 150 countries around the globe. For Dolores was from Spain’s 19th century Casa Sala winemaking family and Pedro from friendly rival La Freixenada whose history dated back to the 13th century... and within a decade they would be making not just wine, but their very own cavas – Spanish sparkling wines – of a quality that would amaze the world. So much so in fact, that over the next 100 years their wines would become the biggest selling bubblies in the world, with sales of over 200 million bottles a year – including 250,000 of those in far-off Australia alone. But sadly Dolores and Pedro did not have the time they deserved together to enjoy their successes: Pedro and the couple’s eldest son were killed during the 1930s Spanish civil war, leaving Dolores to nurture their young company and raise her four other children
single-handedly. They had called their company Freixenet (pronounced fresh-Annette) and on the death of her husband Dolores, surprised the industry with her oenological skills, something unusual for a woman at the time. And equally unusually, she appointed herself head of the company board, presiding over it until her death at 89 years of age in 1978 when her eldest living son, José took over the reins to lead Freixenet to even more mind-boggling heights. Today the fascinating Cavas Freixenet winery in the town of Sant Sadurni in the heart of the Penedes winemaking region of Spain, and about 45km south-west of Barcelona, attracts 90,000 visitors annually. And they’re not disappointed: the old part of the extraordinary 20km of underground cellars (“caves”) dates back to 1922 and goes four storeys down into the cool subterranean limestone, some 135,000 cubic metres of ideal conditions for housing the thousandsupon-thousands of bottles of cava as they age peacefully in perfect conditions. So extensive are these caves in fact that small trains have to be used to move visitors
through them on organised tours that begin with an audio visual presentation of the history of the company, a guided tour of the winery in which Freixenet sparklings are still made true to the traditional Methode Champenoise with secondary fermentation in-bottle, through the vast cellaring caves, a tasting of the Freixenet product of course – and finally a must-do visit to the in-house Dolores Ferrer wine paraphernalia shop. As well as learning much about the actual sparkling wine-making process, visitors also learn how best to store, serve and enjoy sparkling wines – and how somewhat bizarrely, Freixenet as the world’s biggest maker of sparkling wines, in fact owns just 300ha of grape vines. The 100-million kilograms or so of grapes it uses each year come from some 2,000plus growers, whose vines are inspected with military-like precision daily throughout every vintage to determine optimum time for handpicking from the thousands of individual rows. And the logistics of their delivery from so many growers to arrive in the winery in the peak of condition, would do the most
meticulous five-star General proud. Freixenet today accounts for over half of all of Spain’s sparkling wine production, and 80 per cent of its exports. It is also still familyowned, with José semi-retired and his own son Pedro, a fourth generation Ferrer, now managing the business. And amongst José’s fondest memories of his years at the helm? “When I called a new cava Cordon Negro in 1974 and decided to sell it in a frosted black bottle, my colleagues said: ‘A black bottle? Are you crazy?’ But Cordon Negro is today the biggest-selling sparkling wine in the world, and that black bottle is one of the world’s most recognisable.” He still chuckles about it today. You can visit the Cavas Freixenet winery by train from Barcelona-Sants or Barcelona Placa Catalunya Stations to Sant Sadurni D’Anoia station (the winery is just across the road) by car via the AP-7 or AP-2 motorways or with several daily coach operators from Barcelona. The 1.5hr winery tour costs E7 per adult with pensioner/child discounts; the coach tours from Barcelona are higher cost.

LOVE ABILITY: AN EMPOWERED GIRL’S GUIDE TO DATING AND RELATIONSHIPS By Dannielle Miller & Nina Funnell
T
rying to navigate adolescence is tough, but luckily young girls have an honest, uplifting survival guide in the newly published Loveability. The book, written by Dannielle Miller and Nina Funnell, touts itself as “an empowered girl’s guide to dating and relationships” and features realistic yet touching advice on all the issues that matter to teenage girls. Everything is covered, from first crushes to break-ups, how to embrace being single, body issues and dealing with uncomfortable situations. With a relatable, down-to-earth and friendly tone, Miller and Funnell reach out to their teenage readers and encourage acceptance, self-esteem and safe behaviour. Loveability avoids being a boring book of preaching written by adults for teens, and instead uses different tools to engage readers, from personal anecdotes and interviews to quizzes, Q&As and true love checklists. Inspirational yet still filled with warmth and humour, Loveability is the perfect survival guide to help teenage girls get through the horrors of high school, providing sound advice and reassuring readers to be confident with themselves. The book has been received well by fellow writers, who have particularly highlighted Loveability’s strong message of empowerment for young women. Emily Maguire, author of Your Skirt’s Too Short: Sex,
Power, Choice, positively reviewed the book: “Without shaming or lecturing, and with plenty of wit and warmth, Loveability will help girls carve their own path through the thicket of mixed messages and conflicting advice our culture gives them about love, dating and relationships”. Author Dannielle Miller works as the CEO of Enlighten Education, which creates in-school workshops for teenage girls tackling issues such as body image, empowerment and self-esteem. She appears on the Channel 9 ‘Mornings’ program each week as a contributor on parenting and women’s issues, and has previously written for The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, Mamamia and The Hoopla. She collaborated on Loveability with co-author Nina Funnell, a freelance writer and speaker who was a finalist in the NSW Young Australian of the Year Awards in 2010. Funnell writers on cultural and gender issues for publications including The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The National Times. Both authors have managed to strike just the right tone to reach out to teenagers, and have used their expertise in women’s cultural issues to create a book that will inspire and empower. This is a must-purchase book by parents who want to encourage and support their daughters.
