LAUREN TESOLIN chats with the charismatic choreographer of the production, ‘Oh What A Night’, about his successful career and inspiration for the long-running, stellar show...
P
aul Holmquist is more than talented. As a singer, dancer and performer, he has choreographed one of the most exciting musical revues going around – ‘Oh What a Night’, a tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. While ‘Jersey Boys’ was a scripted musical biography of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, ‘Oh What a Night’ is a concert and musical tribute that will have you up singing and dancing to classic hits like ‘Sherry’, ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ and ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’. But the success of the show, which has already sold out an incredible 54 performances in Australia, has its roots in the success of its acclaimed choreographer, Paul. From early on Paul knew that he wanted to be in show business, performing for audiences across the globe. “Singing and dancing was always a part of my childhood. At five-years-old I started singing in the church choir, but it wasn’t until my mid teens that I took up dancing. Everything in my house when I was growing up was always about music, music, music,” he said. “The first time my mother introduced me to Fred Astaire movies on TV I was so fascinated that I one day just said, ‘I want to learn how to dance’ and that’s when my focus started shifting to singing and dancing. “Fred Astaire was my number one influence and I would have to say Danny Kaye was also big, so I guess they really helped me find what I love.” But it wasn’t until Paul’s family moved from a small town in Indiana to Los Angeles that his professional career in dancing really gained momentum – performing professionally at

Disneyland. “It really was a dream come true,” he said. He started to explore dance choreography in his mid 20’s and has since appeared in and choreographed some of the most famous musicals of all time including, ‘The Pirates of Penzance’, ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘A Chorus Line’. “I was lucky enough to be in the west coast premiere of ‘Me And My Girl’ and ‘That’s My Dolly’, so I would have to say that those are my two favourite,” Paul said. But Paul says that ‘Oh What a Night’ has definitely been his biggest achievement to date. “‘Oh What A Night’ has been the biggest highlight of my career so far. I get to travel the world with my band mates who are like my brothers – it’s extraordinary, it’s everything I imagined and more,” Paul said. “I am thrilled and amazed beyond belief that this production has turned out to be a success, I really can’t believe where I am.” But Paul’s achievement has not come without plenty of hard work. ‘Oh What a Night’, which explores 30 songs from Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, is a high energy performance with complicated yet unforgetable choreography. “It probably took me a month to compose the dance movements all together. I would lock myself in my studio, in my dungeon and turn off the lights and listen to a song over and over with my eyes closed until I sort of had a picture of how I wanted that number to look, it’s a process,” Paul said. “The show is amazing, the music has that universal appeal that is undeniably classic.” Having performed in ‘Oh What a Night’

I would lock myself in my studio, in my dungeon and turn off the lights for nearly five years now, Paul has no plans to stop or have a break. “The music is so fun, that’s what drew me to the role in the first place. I’m motivated to do the show because it’s a blast every time the four of us go on stage, it’s just fresh and new and after five years I’m still not tired of it,” he said. “‘Oh What A Night’ challenged me entirely, you need to know the moves and you need to sing at the same time. After all these years of being on stage you can’t help to grow, learn and mature as a performer.” You will love all the classics performed in ‘Oh What A Night’, but for Paul there is one song that is particularly outstanding. “My favourite Frankie Valli song to perform
is called ‘Silence is Golden’ and it’s a beautiful song because it is one of two out of the repertoire that we sing Acapella. It just really is the most magical moment in the show.” To see this amazing tribute concert, ‘Oh What a Night’ will be showing at Blacktown Workers Club on Saturday, February 16.
Tickets to this “back by popular demand” show are on sale now at the Blacktown Workers Club. For members tickets are $40 and $45 for visitors. To book or for more information call 9830 0600 or visit www.workersclub.com.au.

n terms of rock bills it really doesn’t get much bigger and better than Guns N’ Roses, ZZ Top and Rose Tattoo – all at the same time. One of the world’s greatest rock bands, Guns N’ Roses, are returning to Sydney in March and bringing with them two exciting acts for the ultimate night of hard rock. The band were last in Australia in 2010 and since then anticipation has been at an all-time high for the band, fronted by Axl Rose, to head back to our shores. Since bursting out of the LA rock scene
in the mid 80’s, Guns N’ Roses went on to become one of the world’s legendary rock bands. Their 1987 debut album, ‘Appetite For Destruction’, featured songs like ‘Welcome to the Jungle’, ‘Paradise City’ and the charttopping hit ‘Sweet Child of Mine’. The album reached number one on the US Billboard charts and has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide. Joining Guns N’ Roses on their Australian tour are the legendary Texan trio, ZZ Top. The band have been together for 40 years and their most famous hits include ‘Legs’, ‘Gimme All Your Lovin’’ and ‘Sharp Dressed Man’. Aussie rockers Rose Tattoo complete the impressive bill, and feature lead vocalist and icon Angry Anderson. Guns N’ Roses perform live at Allphones Arena on Tuesday, March 12. his year, rock band Self Is A Seed is a local act that music lovers should watch out for as they have great potential. The members who make up this hardhitting, loud and undeniably great rock band include Dave Bleus on vocals, Andrew Haszard on bass, Craig Smith on guitar and Nathin Tuffin on drums. Making their debut for 2013 at the Fitzroy hotel on Friday, January 25, all punk and rock fans must head down to see them perform live and set the audience on fire.
The band originates from Sydney and are a collective that showcase a pop sensibility rarely seen in their genre. The show will be bursting with up-front raw, exciting and ear drum busting music that will resonate throughout your body and vibrate throughout the whole room. e’re not suggesting there’s a new national dish in the making, but when winemaker Phil Spillman invited us to try his 2012 Deakin Estate Sauvignon Blanc chilled with nothing other than a cold avocado on a very warmish summer’s day – and vineyard manager Craig Thornton obliged with a couple of vineyardgrown fruit straight out of the fridge – we were blown away with the wonderful rewards of such simplicity. And even more-so impressed when at home on a late afternoon some days later while the nation’s heatwaves were kicking-in, we shared a bottle or two of Phil’s wine with friends over whole avocados both spooned off the plate, and spread on sourdough. One of those friends later told us that they’d whipped avocado through some vanilla ice-cream – the result, they said, with the Sauvignon Blanc, was sheer summer heaven.

At just $10 this Deakin Estate Sauvignon Blanc won’t break the bank, and being light-bodied, fresh, zesty and brimming with fruit flavour, it is ideal in summer with those avocados as an appetizer – before finishingoff the bottle over a main course of grilled fish and salad. One for lunch: Another wine we enjoy in the warmer months, and which doesn’t seem to get the recognition here it deserves, is RosÊ – a drop you should best enjoy lightly chilled, but will find equally enjoyable from ice-cold to room temperature. Terra Felix has a great La Vie en Rose 2011 RosÊ from their Lake Marmal Vineyard in Central Victoria. With wonderful blackberry and raspberry fruit aromas and lively fruit flavours, it is ideally served lightly chilled with a summery Nicoise Salad, or again with grilled fish and salad. It is available at Dan Murphy’s and independent stores for $17.50.

rom the moment you walk in the door and hear “Hello, welcome to Hooters!” you know you’re in the coolest place in town. In fact, there’s no other place in Penrith that is quite like this American-born franchise. I dined at the Mulgoa Road restaurant on a Monday evening, when I must say the place is a lot quieter compared to the (many) other times I have visited. For our appetizers or Hooterstizers as they are known, my dining partner and I were treated to a plate of fried pickles and their world-famous chicken strips. I must say the fried pickles are an acquired taste but are the perfect starter for anyone who loves to leave the pickle on their burger. They are served with a creamy, tangy sauce and are very addictive. Portions are generous, which makes it a great appetizer to share with a group. Hooters are famous around the world for their chicken – hands down they do it the best. A trip to Hooters wouldn’t be complete without trying their juicy, crispy, boneless chicken strips coated to perfection in one of their seven different sauces. I recommend trying the BBQ sauce version with a side of ranch sauce – absolutely incredible, they melt in your mouth. When it came to choosing a main I couldn’t go past the enormous but delicious Nacho Burger. This tall treat literally tasted like

a handful of Mexican nachos with each bite. Along with the delicious beef patty and toasted bun was every nacho topping imaginable – minced beef, guacamole, cheese, lettuce, salsa, sour cream, tomato, beans and even a corn chip – this burger was unbelievably good. My dining partner sunk her teeth into 10 succulent steamed shrimp served with a spicy cocktail-style sauce and lemon. She topped off her dish with a freshly made Caesar salad which featured crispy bacon and croutons. After stuffing ourselves silly with our Hooterstizers and mains, we finally got to dessert and boy oh boy was it worth leaving room in our stomachs for. The triple chocolate mousse cake with fresh cream and drizzled in chocolate sauce was out of this world. Layered with rich milk, dark and white chocolate mousse, this dessert was the perfect way to end our night. The service we received was excellent and the bedazzling waitresses who every half hour perform the Hooters dance are great entertainment. ritics are raving that ‘Django Unchained’ is yet another Quentin Tarantino masterpiece. With an all star cast including Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson, it was no wonder that opening day at the box office saw ‘Django’ make a whopping $125.4 million. Tarantino takes the audience back in time to before the Civil war. The movie revolves around a slave, Django, whose brutal history with his former landowners lands him face-to-face with Germanborn bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz. Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty in a struggle for freedom.

hat looks like a great concept for a thriller, iller ‘House At The End Of The Street’ unfortunately does not live up to the expectation of horror fans. As predictable as they come, newly divorced Sarah (Elisabeth Shue) and her daughter Elissa (Jennifer Lawrence) find the house of their dreams in a small, rural town. When unexplainable events begin to happen, they discover that the house next door has a chilling secret – the daughter killed her parents and only left a brother behind. As clichéd fate would have it the brother Ryan and Elissa begin a relationship and are consequently pulled into a dangerous mystery.

ake three seasoned local performers and an engagingly comical script, put them in a tranquil garden setting and what do you get? Outrageous, interactive family entertainment at its best. Local theatre company, The Acting Factory, will present their adaptation of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ in the beautiful gardens of Mamre House these school holidays. Little Red meets a wolf in the woods with big teeth and eyes and if you think you know the rest you’re in for a surprise. This truly is a hilariously twisted version of the age old tale and has elements that will entertain the whole family. Writer and veteran kids show performer, Gabrielle DeCelis, take on the title role of Little Red, while seasoned actors Andrew Broderick and Brendan O’Connell bring the roles of Granny and Wolfgang the Wolf to life with their ridiculous antics. With witty rhymes, silly songs and twisted humour, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ will entertain kids and adults alike. Audience members are encouraged to enjoy a picnic dinner in the gardens prior to the performance. So, bring a picnic rug and wolf down your basket of goodies while you cheer on

he television world was in mourning last week with the passing of Conrad Bain, who played Phil Drummond in ‘Diff’rent Strokes’. The series which aired from 1978 to 1986 also starred the late Gary Coleman as Arnold, who was famous for the catchphrase “What’chu talkin’ ‘bout Willis?”. Conrad Bain died of natural causes, aged 89. Foxtel has added more new channels to it’s popular ‘Foxtel GO’ app, this time their movies package. Channel Seven is bringing back ‘Packed to the Rafters’ this Tuesday, January 29 at 8.30pm. The series, which picks up in the fifth season at episode 11, is tipped to be the top-rating show’s last, after the huge number of cast departures over the years. Don’t miss what could be the final few months of ‘Rafters’. ‘American Idol’ returned to Channel Ten last week to lukewarm ratings despite months of expensive promotions. For its premiere episode last Thursday it reached 539,000 viewers – the 15th most watched show on the night. The ratings were also very low in the US, with the once mega-hit show debuting with its lowest ratings ever. Producers hoped bringing on new judges Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj would boost the show’s profile but so far the move hasn’t. Hopefully Channel Ten stick with the show because I have enjoyed the first couple of episodes. Fans of shows ‘Drop Dead Diva’ and ‘Alphas’ would be disappointed to hear that both the shows have been axed in 2013. ‘Diva’ ran for four seasons all up, most recently on GEM. Sci-Fi series ‘Alphas’ was cancelled by its American network after only two seasons. The series about crime-fighters with superhuman abilities aired on Foxtel’s SF channel.

The last of the un-aired episodes of axed US drama ‘666 Park Avenue’ began airing on FOX8 this week – a world first. The show, starring Aussie Rachel Taylor, was axed just before Christmas in the US due to poor ratings. It wasn’t due to been shown in Australia until the American summer however, FOX8 have been given the go-ahead to air the final episodes now rather than wait six months. Catch the final episodes on Monday nights from 9.30pm.
The much-hyped show ‘Elementary’ stars Jonny Lee Miller as detective Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson in a modernday drama about a crime-solving duo who crack the NYPD’s most impossible cases. This revamped classic tale premieres on Channel Ten on Sunday, February 3 at 8.30pm. The series is doing really well in the US and should do well here considering the amount of Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts around after the highly acclaimed films.
