FAIRYTALE BROUGHT TO THE STAGE

W

ith plenty of catchy songs and dazzling dancing, a lively musical adaptation of ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ is putting a fun spin on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairytale. The musical will be staged by local theatre company Ruby Productions throughout January next year at Emu Sports Club, Leonay. Written and directed by Benjamin Roorda, ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ is a fun, familyfriendly adaptation of the fairytale that has captured generations and has become a wellknown fable. While the fairytale was originally written in 1837 in Denmark by famed storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, it still has surprising resonance and the modern re-telling, combined with up tempo music and impressive choreography, makes ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ an energetic show. Set in a far-off, exotic land, the show opens with the Kingdom of Garment falling apart due to the selfish and irresponsible

actions of the awful Emperor, who is wasting all of the Kingdom’s money buying new clothes for himself. But things are about to change in the Kingdom, when two travelling con artists named Peter and Thomas pay a visit to the land and unintentionally get tangled up in a great plot to overthrow the corrupt Emperor and his court. The boys join forces with some hilarious new friends and plan to show the vain Emperor that looks and clothes aren’t as important as what’s on the inside. Filled with whacky characters, an intriguing plotline and fabulously catchy music developed by musical director Jenny Tibbitts, ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ is an amazing adventure suitable for all ages. Ruby Productions is a local theatre company that has put on numerous productions throughout the year including a staging of the Oscar Wilde classic ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan’ and an original work ‘Lost

Socks, Love and Lollipops’. Ruby Productions will stage ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ at Emu Sports Club in Leonay from Wednesday, January 8 through

til Saturday, January 18. Tickets are $15 for adults or $12 for concession. For bookings or more information, visit www.rubyproductions. com.au or visit www.trybooking.com/63750.

RODNEY RUDE PUSHES THE BOUNDARIES

C

omedian Rodney Rude has become a household name with his bawdy, boundary-pushing humour, which audiences in St Marys will get a taste of at his live show. The infamous comic will bring his tour to St Marys Band Club on Friday, December 6 after a year of performing his antics all across the country. His show is not for the faint-hearted, although anyone with a robust sense of humour should enjoy Rude’s wild stage performances, with his stand-up routines littered with four letter words and based around his hilarious observations about the cruder aspects of human behaviour. Rude got his start in entertaining others when he was eight-years-old and sang a song dedicated to his mother on the local radio station. Since then, he went on to work overseas in America and Canada for almost 15 years before coming back to Australia and quickly

getting a reputation for his comedy, even achieving a number one album without it ever having any airplay on the radio. Although his funny routines have gained him many fans, Rude faced numerous legal battles in the 1980s, and was arrested by police in Queensland for the content of his show as well as facing censorship in Western Australia. Taking the charges to court, Rude endured lengthy and expensive litigation but was eventually exonerated and maintains that the fight was important to defend freedom of speech. Fans may know Rude for his profanity and willingness to touch on every possible topic, but in real life the comedian is far more mellow and well-mannered, claiming that his act is just for on stage as his family and close friends will testify to. “I’ve never been rude in real life, I’m not a swearing person or anything, it’s just an act, it’s from eight until 10 at night and that’s the

RETURNING TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

L

ocal musician Imogen Clark’s career has blossom throughout 2013, playing numerous shows across the country – but now she’s set to round off the successful year by returning to where it all began. The 18-year-old singer-songwriter will perform at the Fitzroy Hotel, a venue that she first graced at the age of 13, when she supported her father Mark’s Led Zeppelin cover band. Since then, Clark’s musical career has skyrocketed but although the folk-pop singer has performed in big arenas in Melbourne and Sydney, she still considers Fitzroy as her “home away from home” and is keen to perform at the hotel on Sunday, December 8. Clark’s sophisticated and poignant folktinged pop has helped her build up a strong following, having released three EPs including her most recent record ‘Stories from a Porcelain City’, which was produced by Murray Sheridan and featured Clark’s new band of

session musicians. Her shows and EPs have received positive reviews, with Drum Media’s Timothy Scarfe writing that Clark shows, “a maturity beyond her years both in song, her writing and performance… certainly a mainstay in the Australian live scene”. The young singer also recently received another boost to her career when she was picked as one of the top seven finalists for the Telstra Road to Discovery competition, which saw her perform at Melbourne’s prestigious Forum Theatre. She has performed as the support act for musicians such as Matt Corby, Amy Vee and The McClymonts and has played the pre-show entertainment at the Sydney Entertainment Centre for the concerts of Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, Carole King and P!nk. While her intimate yet powerful performances are an important part of Clark’s appeal, she has also been recognised for her songwriting prowess, having been shortlisted

07

for APRA’s Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition for her original song ‘Ceaseless Goodbye’. Imogen Clark will perform at the Fitzroy

Hotel on Sunday, December 8 at 1pm. Entry to the show is free. For more information, visit www.fitzroyhotel.com.au or www.imogenclark.com.

December 6 and Saturday, December 7 at 2pm and 8pm. Tickets are $25 for the show, or $50 for the show and a three course dinner at the

night shows. For bookings, visit www.henhq. wordpress.com. Don’t miss this chance to see a children’s classic brought to life by talented locals!

VELVETEEN RABBIT IN REAL LIFE

I

nspired by the classic children’s story written by Margery Williams in 1922, ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ has been adapted with music for the stage. The musical adaptation is a collaboration of work between Jye Byrant, who wrote the music, lyrics and orchestration, and Gerard Margetson, who worked on the script. Over the span of four years, the duo have been working together to perfect ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ for audiences and now the show is finally ready. “Gerard Margetson approached me with Jenny Everett (of the Arkadian Bilpin Performers) and I had several dinners to discuss how we might turn such a classic and timeless work into a stage show whilst maintaining and enhancing the integrity of Margery Williams’ beautiful tale,” Jye Bryant said. ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ is musical director Bryant’s fifth original family musical to take the stage in Western Sydney over the past

eight years, with some of his works also being performed in the United Kingdom and Canada. The musical tells the beautiful story of a toy rabbit yearning to be real and a boy whose love has the capacity to transform a weathering toy to become ‘real’. Filled with many lovable characters, and peppered with catchy songs, ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ is suitable for all ages and composing it was a labour of love for Bryant. “I have enjoyed most spending quiet nights at the piano with each of Margery’s characters, so much so that after I completed the score, I felt a sense of loss, loss for the friends I had enhanced with my own music and lyrics,” Bryant said. The production of ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ boasts a talented cast of 15 performers, starring the much-loved Hugh Monroe as Nana and a live 12-piece orchestra to provide the wonderful music. ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ will be performed at the Windsor Function Centre on Friday,

RICHIE AND FARNHAM TEAM UP

T

hey might have very different backgrounds, but superstars Lionel Richie and John Farnham have a shared talent and passion for music, which they will demonstrate when they join forces next year. The duo have teamed up for a tour across Australia in March next year, with Sydneysiders getting the chance to see the two legends live at Allphones Arena on Thursday, March 13. Almost all Australians, young and old, are familiar with the work of homegrown singer John Farnham, whose classic album ‘Whispering Jack’ is estimated to be owned by one in four Aussies. The pop rock musician was born in England and moved to Melbourne when he was just 10-years-old and became a child star before finding musical success with his first hit ‘Sadie The Cleaning Lady’ in 1967. His long list of hit singles includes ‘Pressure Down’, ‘A Touch of Paradise’ and ‘You’re the Voice’, and he was recently voted

best Australian singer of all time in a poll of 100 musicians. While he may be considered at the top of the industry in his home country, Farnham has also performed with international stars Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, and revealed that touring with Lionel Richie has long been on his wish list. “You never think these dreams will actually come true,” Farnham said of the tour. It’s no surprise that Farnham admires Richie – the smooth voiced singer is known as one of the most beloved soul singers in the world, having won Oscar and Golden Globe awards. After a humble start to life in Alabama, Richie was the singer, songwriter and frontman of The Commodores, releasing hits such as ‘Too Hot To Trot’ and ‘Brick House’. He embarked on a solo career in 1982 and had many of the decades biggest songs including ‘Ballerina Girl’, ‘Running With the Night’, ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’, ‘Truly’ and

‘You A re’. Both musicians will perform sets with their own band and singers, rehashing their greatest hits for audiences.

Lionel Richie and John Farnham will perform at Allphones Arena on Thursday, March 13. For bookings or more information, call 132 849 or visit www.ticketek.com.au.

CREATIVES EXPERIMENT IN THE Q LAB

B

udding artists in Penrith will have the chance to hone their creative skills with a new residency program at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts

Centre. The artist residency initiative, called Q LAB, will give independent artists and companies the opportunity to develop new contemporary work with the help of industry professionals. Locals will benefit from the program, which is open to mid-career and emerging artists who live in, work at or have some other connection with western Sydney or the Blue Mountains. A range of creative types are welcome to apply, with the program suitable for artists and companies in theatre, music and dance as well as those who work in cross disciplinary practice. The residency is designed to create pathways for new work to be developed locally and then potentially produced by the Q and

presented at The Joan. In 2014 there will be four creative development residencies available and successful applicants will be given a two to four week residency in the Joan’s Mullins Studio, reaping the benefits of technical support, access to dramaturgical and production advice, access to lighting and AV equipment. The residency will finish off with the artist producing a public work in progress presentation, and holding a master class for students at studio Q. The Joan’s Director of Performing Arts, Katrina Douglas, said that Q LAB is a brilliant initiative for artists, who will grow artistically. “Q LAB is a terrific opportunity to work in a professionally supported environment within a framework of development, artistic exploration and critical showing. The work created and supported through Q LAB will be considered for inclusion in future Q Production seasons at The Joan,” Ms Douglas said.

Applications for Q LAB residencies are due by close of business on Friday, January 17, 2014 and should be sent to kdouglas@ jspac.com.au. Successful residencies will be

announced early February 2014. For more information or application and selection criteria, contact Katrina Douglas on (02) 4723 7610.

ritney Spears is undeniably the biggest star to have emerged from the 90’s, and since the days of bubblegum pop songs, the artist has undergone many changes in genre and look. After selling almost four million units in Australia, Spears has proven that she’s still able to win over fans and her latest album ‘Femme Fatale’ debuted at number 1 on the ARIA albums chart. Now Spears is back and set to blaze up the charts again with her eighth studio album ‘Britney Jean’, which is feted to be more personal than anything she’s ever released before. The record was named after the diva herself to represent the personal nature of the music, which Spears had much creative influence over. She collaborated with celebrity producer will.i.am, and also featured guest vocals from her sister Jamie Lynn, T.I and will.i.am. Britney’s previous dance songs have been wildly popular, so it’s no surprise that she returned to the genre with the electronica-tinged track ‘Work Bitch’. She takes on a completely different

mood with the song ‘Perfume’, which is an emotional power ballad that is heavily influenced by the 80’s. The song sees Spears showing off a more vulnerable side, reflecting on past relationships. Overall, ‘Britney Jean’ is an eclectic mix of styles and has something to offer for any pop fan.

The book is the long-awaited prequel to her internationally bestselling novel The Bronze Horseman, which was released 13 years ago and has been voted as one of the top 10 love stories of all time. Bronze Horseman tells the tale of protagonist Alexander, however, in Bellagrand, Simons goes backa generation to tell the tale of Alexander’s family, capturing the fated romance of his parents Gina and Harry. While they may seem to be a match made in heaven, Gina and Harry have to face many trials and tribulations on their journey together. Set at the turn of the century in the dawning of the modern world, Gina Attaviano from Belpasso travels to Boston’s Freedom Docks in search of a new and better life, and meets Harry Barrington doing exactly the same. As they embark on a romance, the fates of Gina and Harry’s families become entwined on a collision course between old and new, as expectations and desires clash and the troubled duo must fight to be together. Against a backdrop of America racing enthusiastically into the future, Gina and Harry will face losses and gains in an ill-fated love that will break readers’ hearts. While Gina, who is independent, compassionate and

strong, desperately wants a family, Boston born blue-blooded Harry wants to create a better world and life for his fellow countrymen and is idealistic and political. The couple sacrifice much of their lives to be together, but unfortunately their battle and heartache isn’t done as their passionate natures often lead to them to fiery situations and ultimately to one decision they must make that will determine their destiny. Their wild journey together takes them through four decades and two continents, from Gina and Harry living in extreme poverty to lavish wealth, turmoil and triumph and two completely different cultures. Author Paullina Simons has sold more than two million copies of her novels in Australia alone, and many more internationally. She was born in Leningrad, Russia in 1963 and immigrated with her family to the United States when she was just 10-years-old. From her childhood in Russia, Simons always dreamt of someday becoming a writer but her fantasy was put on hold as she learned English and overcame the shock of a new culture. She draws on her rich life experience and uses her famously emotional writing style to pull on readers’ heart strings in Bellagrand.

EAT OUT THIS WEEKEND

P HENRI MARC

enrith just got funky! If you’re looking for a relaxing weekend breakfast or a quick snack, the very snappy Henri Marc could well be the answer. Located in Memory Park in the Penrith CBD, Henri Marc’s menu changes daily, so your experience will always be delightfully varied. As long as the beautiful milkshakes are on the menu, we’re happy! Pancakes, a variety of egg-based dishes, chorizo-inspired items and a whole heap more… Henri Marc is simply stunning and certainly very different from the run of the mill cafes you’ll find around the place.

I

f you’re after a quick meal, or a bite to eat with friends over a few drinks, you can’t go past the Peachtree Hotel. You’ll find one of the best club bistros in Penrith! Why not try the delicious chicken breast, marinated in garlic and herbs? Or if you love your steak, challenge yourself and take on the 1KG grain fed rump. There’s of course plenty of schnitzel on the menu and seafood options as well. But perhaps the best of the best is the awesome burgers… all for a fantastic, low price. If the bistro doesn’t suit you, check out the awesome pizzas – best in town, some say!

OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE

PAIRING YOUR CHRISTMAS DISHES WITH FESTIVE WINES by David Ellis

O

ffering the right wine on Christmas Day is just as important as putting out the right sauces or gravy and the right mix in the salad bowl. If you have bubblies in mind for greeting festive lunch or dinner guests, a ripper new idea is Yellowglen’s screwcap Yellow Brut Cuvee – which means you can reseal for dinner any left in the bottle from lunchtime, and you’ll have no fizzy overflow (and thus wastage) from popping the cork. RRP is just $14.99. Try also Chandon Australia’s creamy 2010 Vintage Brut at $41, Yarra Burn’s Premium Cuvee Brut at $20, Bay of Fires’ Tasmanian Cuvee Rosé at $30, or the world’s biggest selling bubbly, Spain’s Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut at just $15. If seafood’s your choice consider ever-reliable Jacobs Creek 2012 Riesling at $12, New Zealand’s Giesen 2012 Organic Sauvignon Blanc at $20, 2013 Howard Vineyard Clover Pinot Gris $22, or on a bit of a different tack Margan 2013 Shiraz Saignee

W

ou certainly won’t leave Outback Steakhouse with an empty stomach that is for certain! The meals are of a generous portion and taste brilliant! Why not try some cheesy fries or a famous Bloomin’ Onion for a starter, and then move on to one of the delicious steaks – we love the Victoria’s Fillet the best! It’s not only steak they do well here, either. The Alice Springs Chicken is one of the best items on the menu and a must try dish for any occasion. Make sure you book as it’s one of Penrith’s most popular restaurants. Panthers complex, Mulgoa Road, Penrith. Phone 4732 2577.

Rosé at $18. For roast chicken either continue with the bubbles or go for a 2012 Chain of Ponds The Lady Sauvignon Blanc at $30, Tim Adams’ 2013 Pinot Gris at $20 or a Logan Weemala 2013 Riesling at $19. And for traditional Christmas turkey Rymill’s 2012 Shiraz at $15.95 or Toolangi’s unusual Chardonnay/Viognier blend at $20, or if you’d prefer a white, Jacob’s Creek 2012 Barossa Reserve Riesling at $17. Both red and white go well with roast pork: for reds consider a 2011 Capel Vale Merlot at $14 or a 2011 Lerida Lake George Pinot Noir $26.50, for whites a 2013 Serafino Bellissimo Fiano at $18 or Brown Bros 2012 Chenin Blanc at $12. If you’re doing roast beef or lamb think either a $19.95 2011 Angus the Bull Cabernet Sauvignon or 2010 Mandala The Butterfly Cabernet Sauvignon at $50, or a 2011 Logan Ridge of Tears Shiraz $45 or 2012 Fifth Leg Shiraz at $18.

54 Peachtree Road, Penrith. Pone 4731 3444. e all love a great pizza but arguably Penrith’s best can be found at Panarottis inside Penrith Panthers. Whether it be the delicious Mobster pizza, or something a little more unique and gourmet, Panarotti’s has an awesome, varied menu. There are also pasta, steak and chicken dishes on offer. With a wide selection for the entire family, it’s no wonder Panarottis is one of the leading choices around town for birthday parties, work events or other functions. There’s definitely something here for everyone.

one of the worst productions in the Awards’ 27 year history. Not only had no one heard of many of the acts, presenters and award winners but the show was cut down so unprofessionally you’d be forgiven if you’d thought it had been edited on Windows Movie Maker. thought all my Christmas’s had come at once last week when the news came through that Grant Denyer is quitting television… again! The serial quitter announced last Friday he was leaving Channel Seven’s terrible game show ‘Million Dollar Minute’ to spend more time with family. With Denyer living in Sydney and the show filmed in Melbourne, Denyer said he just couldn’t handle the grueling production schedule which kept him away from his family too long. GUY FAWKES DAY: THE GUNPOWDER TREASON AND PLOT by David Ellis

E

ven though it’s more than 400 years since Guy (Guido) Fawkes and his mates tried to blow up England’s Parliament House in 1605, the Brits still celebrate what’s become known as Guy Fawkes Day (or Bonfire Night) every November 5 with great bonfires and letting off of fireworks across the country. Certainly many of we wrinklies of AngloSaxon descent can still remember looking forward to Bonfire Night in our childhoods, but with today’s tighter fireworks laws, our night no longer goes off with quite the bang it once did. Guy Fawkes was one of a group of Catholics who’d hoped to blow up Parliament and everyone inside it during its official opening by the Protestant King James I on November 5, 1605, in protest at James’ anti-Catholicism including banishing Catholic priests from Britain. Of the dozen or so members of the socalled Gunpowder Plot, Guy Fawkes was the first caught – discovered guarding a cellar under Parliament’s House of Lords the plotters had leased and filled with 36 barrels (two tonnes) of gunpowder.

Although baptised a Protestant, Fawkes had converted in adult life to Catholicism, joining a group that wanted to restore a Catholic monarch to the throne in place of James. He was caught when Parliament House guards raided the cellar in the wee hours of the morning of November 5, after an anonymous note tipped-off a Member of Parliament not to attend the opening because of the plot. After extensive torturing, Fawkes revealed the names of several of his co-conspirators. They were quickly rounded-up, and with himself put on trial in January 1606: their resultant fate was to be a gruesome one. The judge ordered they be hanged, drawn and quartered on January 31, which meant each would be tied to two planks and hauled along the ground by horses from the Tower of London where they had been held, to the gallows ironically located in the Old Palace Yard opposite Parliament House – locals gathering in their thousands along the way to hurl stones and rotten fruit at them. At the gallows they would then be individually hanged by the neck – but not until

dead: instead the executioner would judge from his victims’ kicks how close he was to death, then cut him loose… and with the same knife first slice off his genitals, and then cut out his heart, theatrically holding it to the throng with the exhortation: “Witness this – the heart of a traitor!” For finality the now-deceased would be beheaded, and their body hacked into several parts that would be taken away for public display around the city. Such was “justice” in 17th century England. Guy Fawkes was the last of the three to die that day but his ending was not as expected: as he was climbing the ladder to the gallows, he suddenly jumped off, turning head-down, and dying instantly from a broken neck as he hit the ground. And another escaped the gallows as well: Francis Tresham died of natural causes in the Tower while awaiting his punishment. Tresham’s hatred of the Protestants stemmed from the imprisonment of his father, Sir Thomas who had spent 15 years in gaol or under house arrest for harbouring a Catholic priest, escaping harsher punishment

as a Catholic only because he had once been the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and fortuitously still had usefully-placed connections. And interestingly Sir Thomas’ devoutness can still be seen today in a building he built in 1593 called the Triangular Lodge near Rushton in Northamptonshire, and which pays homage to the three points of the Holy Trinity… Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Lodge is comprised of three levels, each with three walls exactly 33-feet (10m) wide and with three windows in each wall. On top of each wall are three gargoyles surmounted by three pinnacled gables, and in the centre of the building a three-sided triangular chimney. And a Latin religious text of 33 letters runs around the inside of each of the three walls of the building... which in two corners has small closets believed to be ‘priests’ holes’ for hiding Catholic clergy from the Protestants. The third corner houses the connecting staircase. The British Heritage-listed Triangular Lodge is open April to November so it is perfect timing to be in Britian for Bonfire Night.

LUDDENHAM’S TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

L

ast Saturday, November 30, Luddenham celebrated its bicentenary with the Back to Luddenham Weekend. The night started with speeches from local dignitaries before Luddenham’s oldest resident, Dolly Cuthell unveiled the bicentenary monument. Afterwards there was the return of the Old Time Dances that were a big part of Luddenham for many years. Cob and Co Old Time Dance Band provided the live entertainment. On Sunday, the fun and frivolity continued with a Family Fun Day at the Luddenham Showground. Children enjoyed the Olden Games and Talent Quest that was won by Luddenham girl Abbey McPherson; and the historical societies put on a great display of local historical items in the Memorabilia Pavilion. At noon the 200th birthday cake was cut by Ms Cuthell and youngest resident Soraya Boumansour. A big congratulations to Wayne Willmington who organised the event weekend!
