Nathan Taylor chats with New York’s Victor Trevino about the hilarious production ‘Men In Pink Tights’ coming to The Joan this month…

NO GIRLS IN SIGHT AS BLOKES FROCK UP

A

bunch of ‘Men In Pink Tights’ are headed Penrith’s way this month when Les Ballets Eloelle’s hilarious and artistically brilliant production takes over the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on May 14. Victor Trevino’s new hit ‘Men In Pink Tights’ is a show designed for both males and females, the young and the old and is the ultimate send up of both classical and contemporary ballet. Artistic Director and Lead Soloist, Victor Trevino, describes this hilarious new production as a ‘spoof’ of traditional dances but with one big difference. “There will be no females on stage, although maybe one or two of them you might think might be, but there aren’t any,” Victor said. “All the male and female roles are taken by guys, we dance on our toes just like women and basically we do all the original steps you would see in a traditional ballet show and we kind of just twist them up a little bit to make them funny and entertaining.” The combination of brilliant dancing technique, tongue-in-cheek blatant humour and the odd dancing mishap makes for a joyous experience for the whole audience. “We are trying to get a laugh from the audience and give them a good time,” Victor said. “We want them to enjoy elements of traditional dance in a different way and for the audience to wet themselves looking at some unusual ballerinas, with a little bit of hair on them.” ‘Men In Pink Tights’ boasts more than 50 classical ballets in its repertoire including ‘Swan Lake Act II’, ‘Spartacus’, ‘Grande Tarantelle’ and ‘Romeo and

Juliet’, as well as featuring 20 of the best international male dancers from 13 different countries. These handsome and talented ballerinas have performed with some of the world’s leading ballet companies including the Houston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, New York City Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, just to name a few. And if you’re thinking ‘Men In Pink Tights’ is just for the ladies, then you’re wrong, because loads of men each night are making their way to theatres across the world to laugh at their fellow sex prancing around the stage in pink costumes. “We’ve had men tell us ‘the wife dragged me along and I thought this is going to be a night that I can take a nap in the theatre’, but they said to me after that they had an incredible time and that show was a lot different than they expected,” Victor said. “All our characters are not what you would normally see in a traditional ballet – you’d see some thin ones, some big ones, some tall ones and some short ones – you’re going to see all kinds of ‘swans’ out there on stage that you wouldn’t normally see.” The producers of ‘Men In Pink Tights’, Les Ballets Eloelle, are one of the few all male comedy ballet companies in the world. Their mission is to create, present, preserve and extend comedic repertoire of classical and contemporary dancing, through performances of the highest quality, presented to the widest audience possible. Victor, who also works as casting director for the show, said it can be quite difficult to find the right mix of male ballerinas.

“It’s hard to find the right combination of people because when you put them all on stage together you want it to be interesting,” he said. “I think in this production I got very lucky because I have a group from all over the world in the show who are all well-trained, great dancers and who have a great sense of humour. I think I’ve really gotten lucky with this particular cast.” Dancers from South Africa, The Philippines, Chile and the United States are just some of the nations represented in the cast of ‘Men In Pink Tights’. Then again what about an Australian member? Victor said whilst he’s Down Under he could very well be on the hunt for his first Aussie male ballerina. “I have many friends in Australia who were trying to find an Aussie dancer for me but a lot of directors I spoke with were afraid if I took the dancers, they wouldn’t come back. They weren’t very willing to share them with me,” he laughed. It’s also important to reiterate to theatre-goers, especially those men who attend, that while these ballerinas in pink tights look fantastic in their tight tutus and heavy make-up, they aren’t what they seem… they are all men, each

and every one of them. “We haven’t had any serious mishaps as yet because there is space between the dancers and the audience, but we have had to actually clarify with a few confused people that there were no females on stage,” Victor laughed. “When you look at one of the thinner Filipino dancers we have all dressed up, his legs go right up to his ears just like a girl. It’s hard for us to tell what we are looking at sometimes, so I’m sure it’s impossible for the audience.” The New York-based Les Ballets Eloelle’s ‘Men In Pink Tights’ is sure to delight audiences of all ages when they perform traditional dance classics with a twist. The most talented and funniest male ballerinas on the planet will entertain you with their antics, and burly men will transform before your eyes into dainty, slightly hairy swans.

The Les Ballets Eloelle’s ‘Men In Pink Tights’ is on at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Monday, May 14 at 8pm. Tickets start at $44.90. To book or for more information call The Joan on 4723 7600 or visit www.jspac.com.au.

MOTHER LOAD!

Give Mum a laugh this Mother’s Day with hilarious new musical at Rooty Hill

I

f you’re after an early Mother’s Day gift for the number one woman in your life, then why not send her along to the hilarious ‘Motherhood The Musical’. ‘Motherhood The Musical’ is a funny, musical journey about the lives of four mums. There’s Barb, an overworked, underpaid, stressed-out mother of five; Brooke, the lawyer, who works too much and barely sees her kids; Trisha, a single mum struggling to balance work, her family and her divorce and finally Amy, the naïve young woman about to have her first child. As the three friends throw Amy a baby shower, the truth about motherhood (the good, the bad and the ugly) all comes out in the open – the nappies, the dirty laundry, the lazy husbands, juggling the demands of children, a career and everything in between. Written by the award-winning singer/ songwriter Sue Fabisch, ‘Motherhood The Musical’ has received rave reviews during its Australian tour. A critic from What’s On In Sydney said: “This is one of the most amusing musicals I have been to in a long time. It is a wonderful production with a colourful set, the acting and singing was flawless. I highly recommend any woman to go

and see it. You will want to ring you mum to say I love you by the end”. A writer from the Sydney Morning Herald said: “‘Motherhood The Musical’ has it all. If you saw the funny side of the change of life in ‘Menopause The Musical’, then this show is for you”. Audiences will love this joyous musical journey as it looks at the blessings and the perils of being a mum. The show is all about laughing and crying, craziness and calm, smiles and tears, all wrapped up into 90 minutes of great musical entertainment. ‘Motherhood The Musical’ is brought to you by the same Australian producer that gave audiences the smash hit ‘Menopause The Musical’. ‘Menopause’ was extremely successful in its latest run in 2011. ‘Motherhood The Musical’ is a funny, yet loving look at being a mum at any age. It’s climbing the emotional mountain only to find that there’s laundry at the top. It’s discovering how powerful your love can be and how quickly they grow up. It’s helping them find their way and not losing yours. It’s about laughing and crying, smiles and tears… and all before breakfast. So treat your beautiful mum to an early Mother’s Day gift, something that she’ll remember forever. ‘Motherhood The Musical’ is on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5 at Rooty Hill RSL at 8pm. Tickets are $41. To book or for more information call 9625 5500 or visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au. Don’t forget to follow The Western Weekender on Twitter or Facebook! THEATRE

CLASSIC MUSICAL

Re-live the magic of ‘Grease’ on stage at Springwood Civic Centre

B

lue Mountains Musical Society (BMMS) has presented many musicals over the years but one theme has always remained constant – love! The world of theatre has provided us with some of the greatest romances of all time. Romeo and Juliet, Aladdin and Jasmine, Cinderella and Prince Charming and of course Belle and the Beast! BMMS’s upcoming production of ‘Grease’ presents another romantically iconic courting couple Danny and Sandy. Adam Lucas and Erin McSweeney play the classic roles of Danny and Sandy in the BMMS production of ‘Grease’. Erin commented that the task of recreating the roles of Rydell High’s young rocking lovers made famous by John Travolta and Olivia

Newton-John is daunting. “‘Grease’ is such a well known show that I feel a balance has to be found between satisfying the audience’s expectations and creating our own interpretation of the musical,” she said. The head ‘greaser’, Danny Zuko, is played with amazing energy by Adam Lucas, who grew up in Springwood and now lives in Faulconbridge. Adam has appeared in ‘Packed to the Rafters’ and ‘Rescue Special Ops’ and will be familiar to BMMS audiences as Grantaire in the Society’s recent production of ‘Les Miserables’. Adam performs because he loves to and is constantly looking for opportunities to refine his skills. “I think it is important to keep learning as a performer. I train through NIDA short courses and have been developing my voice during singing lessons,” Adam said. “The character of Danny intrigues me because he has more levels than you might think. He maintains a ‘cool guy’ façade but also needs to be with Sandy. It is the conflicting aspects of his life which make him interesting.” Nineteen-year-old Cranebrook resident Erin is already a seasoned performer. She has appeared in productions of ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Joseph and His Technicolor Dreamcoat’ and ‘Cats’. Erin worked with the Bell Shakespeare Company and in a short film with the notable Australian actor Shane Porteous. “For me performing is a thrill. I just love playing to people and entertaining them,” Erin said. “Sandy is psychologically interesting as she experiences the universal story for young people in today’s society – the tug of war we all go

through. Sandy wants to be accepted so badly but also feels the urge to be true to herself. I hope audiences will love this show as much as we enjoy presenting it.” ‘Grease’ will be staged at the Springwood

Civic Centre from May 13 to June 3. Come along and bring your childhood sweetheart! Tickets start at $27 for adults and $22 for students. To book or for more information call 4739 0555 or visit www.bmms.org.au.

SPECIAL JOURNEY

Darren Coggan returns to Penrith will new show that will inspire us all

I

f you were entertained by Darren Coggan’s ‘Peace Train, the Cat Stevens Story’, you will be moved by the honesty and spirit of his new production ‘War Stories’, which is currently showing at the Q Theatre. Inspired by his own family history, Darren connects us to an iconic part of our heritage. Personal and exceptional stories of Australians at war are woven into songs that provide an intimate perspective of the tales that have helped shape our nation. ‘War Stories’ takes you on an insightful journey into the lives of the Australians behind the lines. We reminisce about the generation of women who stayed at home and kept the country running. We celebrate the mateship, humour and courage in the Gallipoli trenches.

13

THEATRE And we honour our Indigenous diggers, a story rarely told. “I’m very proud to be touring this moving salute to the brave men and women who have proudly worn the slouch hat,” Darren said. “This show presents both small and personal stories, footnote-like, that are outside the big, simple mainstream history of Australians at war and it makes those chapters of our military history more accessible, more human. “This show is a two-hour theatrical story piece with songs and a refreshing new look at what is such a defining part of our heritage.” Darren’s beautiful performance brings warmth and integrity to the narrative. ‘War Stories’ is a salute to the Australian spirit and how we find the strength to shine in the most intense and heart-breaking situations. Darren’s performing arts résumé is fairly extensive. Over his career he has toured with stage shows like ‘Grease – The Mega Musical’, ‘Happy Days – The Arena Mega Musical’ and ‘Shout – The Musical of the Wild One’. His critically acclaimed show ‘Peace Train’ played to standing ovations in the most prestigious venues across the country including the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall and Penrith’s Q Theatre. Ambassador for the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia, James Blundell, said no Australian should miss this important experience. “‘War Stories’ paints a vivid picture of Australia at war and is a hugely entertaining experience. This is much see for all Australians,” he said. Darren Coggan presents ‘War Stories – A Salute in Story and Song to the ANZAC Spirit’ at the Q Theatre tonight Friday, May 4 at 8pm and Saturday, May 5 at 2pm and 8pm.

T

here’s never been a more highly anticipated and overly hyped superhero movie than Marvel’s latest and best blockbuster ‘The Avengers’. The film features an ensemble cast, which includes Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Chris Hemsworth at Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury (Jackson), Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D, finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of

disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. When ‘The Avengers’ hit cinemas last week in Australia it earned $6.2 million, the second highest grossing day of all time at the local box office, only just behind Harry Potter’s final instalment ‘Deathly Hallows Part 2’. Critic from Rolling Stone, Peter Travers, praised director Joss Whedon’s fine work, as well as the film’s nicely timed humorous elements: “All hail Joss Whedon, the warrior king of this dizzying, dazzling 3D action epic. ‘The Avengers’ is ‘Transformers’ with a brain, a heart and a working sense of humour”. Don’t miss seeing ‘The Avengers’ in 3D and 2D on the big screen at Hoyts Penrith. The film is rated M.

MUST PLAY GAME

HEAD INTO COMBAT Starhawk set for exclusive Playstation 3 release next week

F

rom the creators of ‘Warhawk’ comes a bold new third person shooter adventure, ‘Starhawk’, where you can change the battlefield instantly in the heat of combat. In ‘Starhawk’ the universe is in the future, where humans have begun colonising other planets. In the future, humanity’s last hope lies in the lawless frontier of space where factions battle over the universe’s most precious resource, ‘Rift Energy’. Caught in the middle is Emmett Graves, an outcast gunslinger who is drawn back to the planet that abandoned him to face a fierce outlaw and his warband of followers. Experience intense frenetic combat on foot, in vehicles, or in the air and discover a new type of shooter gameplay with the new ‘Build & Battle’

system. Gain the tactical advantage by calling upon an arsenal of weapons, vehicles and fortifications – violently delivered from an orbiting drop ship to help turn the tide of battle. Engage in epic 32 player online battles and see maps dynamically change depending completely on each player’s strategy or team up with friends, and protect your claim against waves of AI opponents in online and offline Coop modes. The gameplay is similar to ‘Warhawk’, but the most notable difference is the addition of a single-player story mode. This exciting new game will be exclusively released for Playstation 3 next week. It is rated M.

FABULOUS FESTIVAL Take a walk on the wild side and experience something different

festival that invites western Sydney to ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ will take place at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre this May. The festival, known as the ‘Aurora Festival of Living Music’, will be in full swing from Friday, May 4 until Sunday, May 13. During that period there will be a special performance on May 6 from one of Australia’s top recorder performers, Alicia Crossley (pictured). Alicia will be performing a selection of tunes

Make up a luncheon party and dine al fresco or enjoy the attractive décor inside. Dinner is a culinary delight. dating back from the present to 600 years ago. The intriguing selection will include folk tunes from the romantic renaissance period to the present day arrangements for electro-acoustic music that will surely touch the hearts and change the minds of everyone about the once uninteresting recorder. This festival is a chance for people like Alicia to show school students that the recorder is a fun, exciting and even elegant instrument to learn (contrary to popular belief). Alicia will also be conducting workshops called ‘We (Heart) The Recorder’ to educate school kids in Penrith and the Blue Mountains about how fun the recorder, and in fact all musical instruments, can be. On Thursday, May 10 at 5.30pm, Chronology of Arts will hold AMPED, a free outdoor event to engage the youngsters of Penrith with the contemporary new-art music of an amplified guitar quartet, Ampere. Later that evening, acclaimed musician, Oren Ambarchi will do a solo performance on his guitar at The Joan. Ambarchi is a composer and multiinstrumentalist whose works focuses on the exploration of the guitar. He has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists such as Fennesz, Otomo Yoshihide, Keith Rowe, Pimmon, Dave Grohl and many more. For Aurora Festival bookings call 4723 7600 or visit www.jspac.com.au.

here was dancing, egg-and-spoon races, pass-the-ball competitions and a whole lot more at the launch of Hype2Unite last weekend. Hype2Unite is an exciting new initiative developed by Penrith Panthers NRL player Junior Tia Kilifi, aimed at developing a mutual understanding and appreciation of the different cultures that make up life in western Sydney. The main aim is to give other cultures a glimpse into the Polynesian culture. Panthers players and sponsors played a big part in the day, and the Polynesian community came out in force. It’s hoped other Hype2Unite events will be held in the future.

LAST WORDS

THE RETURN OF THE DARKNESS

Stephen Bisset chats with The Darkness bassist Frankie Poullain about their upcoming Aussie tour…

Poullain said Aussie punters could expect another rock and roll extravaganza on this tour, albeit a little more raucous – if that’s possible. “The shows this time around are going to be a bunch of fun. It’s going to be much wilder and edgier than what we’ve been doing before – I think it’s good to exaggerate what you’re doing on an album on stage,” he said. Going from strength to strength, the Darkness are on the cusp of releasing album number three, and if ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us’ – a track from the set released as a free download in February – is anything to go by, it’s sure to be another slab of pure glam poprock heaven. “I’d say the new album is going to be more concentrated and intense than ‘To Hell and Back’, although it’s still going to definitely be a Darkness record,” Poullain said. “I guess we’re a lot hungrier now than we were on the last album and, probably more importantly, less wasted. We’re fresh as a daisy.” Catch The Darkness when they land at the Roundhouse at the University of NSW this Sunday, May 6 at 8pm. Tickets are $72. W

hen UK outfit The Darkness exploded on to the international scene in 2003 with their incendiary slice of nouveau-glam rock, ‘Permission to Land’, it seemed nothing could touch the four blokes from Suffolk. Led by the almost impossible falsetto of frontman Justin Hawkins, The Darkness reintroduced the world to devil-may-care rock and roll, possibly not seen since the days of the ‘80s rock bands like Motley Crue and Skid Row. Cracks started to appear when bassist Frankie Poullain left the band in 2005 before the release of second album ‘One Way Ticket to Hell… and Back’. Hawkins departed a year later to pursue other projects, seemingly spelling the end of The Darkness. Well, not quite. Like a leather-panted phoenix rising from the ashes, the original Darkness line-up reunited in March last year and haven’t looked back since. Now, the band are about to head back to our shores and, as bassist Frankie Poullain told FYI from his East London bedroom, the lads can’t wait to strut their stuff again Down Under. “It’s going be awesome to get back to Australia, we’ve all got some really great memories of playing down there,” Poullain said.
