HAVE A ‘BLOODY’ GOOD TIME WITH KEV
03
SHANNON COCHRANE has a laugh with legendary comedian Kevin ‘Bloody’ Wilson about his witty music, working with his daughter and being arrested...
W
hen people think of Australian comedy, the first name that pops into their mind is Kevin ‘Bloody’ Wilson. The lovable larrikin, whose edgy humour has made him a global star, will take up the fight against political correctness on his national tour later this month. After a career that has spanned 30 years and shows no sign of slowing down, Wilson is ready to embark on his ‘First of the Final Farewell Tours’, accompanied by his daughter Jenny Talia. The duo will be bringing their comedy to the people of western Sydney when they perform at the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers and Rooty Hill RSL. Fans should prepare to be in stitches, with Wilson saying in his famously Aussie way that the gig will be “a bloody good time, more than anything”. “Just come along and have a good time and forget about political correctness for a few hours,” he said. With his distinct brand of comedy and catchy songs, Wilson has become one of Australia’s most popular figures, having sold almost four million records and toured the world with his songs. Yet despite his success story, Wilson is still as down-to-earth as he was three decades ago when he worked as an electrician in his hometown of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Back then, he was in a small-town band and started to develop his songs each week on stage by playing a top 40 song and tweaking the lyrics to make them funny. Although becoming a music megastar was never on Wilson’s agenda, he was persuaded by friends to take his songs to the recording

studio and from there he gradually built up a following, with his albums landing on the Australian independent charts. Eventually, Wilson caught the attention of Sony Music who signed him and released his later albums. According to Wilson, the reason that his music has been phenomenally successful is simply that it expresses honest truths in a way that listeners can relate to and laugh at. “I think if anything it’s honest… I get the comments so often, ‘you write what we’re thinking’ and I guess that’s part of it. But it’s also light-hearted and it’s funny and that’s the critical part about it, more than anything it’s Australians taking the piss because that’s what we do,” he said. Since Wilson’s career started with him singing his music for mates at the local pub, it’s fitting that he still tests out his music on friends. “I sit around with my mates and we have a carton of beer and a pizza and pull out guitars. They’ll try use songs on me and I’ll try to use songs on them,” he said, adding that his lyrics are often inspired by real-life stories he has heard from friends. “I’ll be sitting there singing my new song for them and one of them will raise an eyebrow and say ‘you bastard, I only told you about that last Friday’ and suddenly it’s in a song,” he laughed. Wilson was nominated for the Australian of the Year Award in 2010 – a fact that he regards as hilariously ironic, since he has also been arrested for swearing while performing his songs in public. “What makes that so funny is I was nominated for my services to the arts, and I

I was getting arrested for the very same thing 30 years earlier... was getting arrested for the very same thing 30 years earlier,” he said. On top of conquering his homeland, Wilson has become a smash hit overseas after he took the advice of legendary comedian Billy Connelly, who suggested he take his songs to the UK market. It seems that a great sense of humour runs in the family, with his daughter Jenny Talia taking up the family business, forging out a musical career in Chicago where she plays her own comedy songs. Referring to his career as a “dream ride”, Wilson said that although he will eventually slow down his touring, he can’t imagine a time when he isn’t creating songs. “It’s written to make people laugh and I for
one don’t take it too seriously. It’s just a funny thing to do, an amazing way to make a living… I still don’t consider it a real job,” he said. “It’s sustained me for the last 30 odd years… people say, ‘why don’t you retire?’ Or ‘are you going to retire?’. How can I retire when I’m already retired? I retired 30 years ago.”
Kevin ‘Bloody’ Wilson will perform with special guest Jenny Talia at the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Friday, April 12 and Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, April 19. For more information, visit www. kevinbloodywilson.com.

TAKE A DANCE BACK TO THE PAST
G
o on a walk down memory lane with the Q Theatre Company’s fabulous new show ‘Dance Hall Days’, which celebrates the by-gone world of social dancing. The performance has been designed to engage local seniors from the Penrith and Blue Mountains areas and perfectly captures the memories and experiences of old-time dance halls. It will be showing for two touching performances at St Marys Memorial Hall on Tuesday, April 9 at 11am and 7pm. Both older Australians and youngsters alike will enjoy this lively performance that mixes verbatim theatre, performance and social dance to create a show that reflects an earlier era. The world of dance hall is brought back to life on the stage with themes of first love explored through magical old-time music and dance. The cast will evoke strong emotions from
the audience as their characters find love on the dance floor and whisper intimate and secret conversations while learning to dance the Waltz, Quickstep and Foxtrot. ‘Dance Hall Days’ truly reflects the essence of an older generation and will take the crowd on a journey to a time when manners and etiquette were important, dressing up in fine clothes was essential and whole communities bonded and socialised at dances. Whether you’re the life of the party or a wall flower; a seasoned senior or a member of generation Y, anyone can enjoy ‘Dance Hall Days’ and learn from the spirit of a gentler time. Take the chance to strut your stuff on the dance floor for a poignant night of memories, music and dance. The event is open to all although dressing up is a must – ladies can don their classiest dresses and men should search their wardrobe for an outfit which is suitable for an old-fashioned gentleman.
‘Dance Hall Days’ will show at St Marys Memorial Hall on Tuesday, April 9 at 11am and 7pm. Tickets range from $25 to $30. For bookings or more information, call

FOLK DUO HEAD HOME FOR TOUR
T
o celebrate the release of their fourth studio album ‘Sand and Stone’, acclaimed alternative folk duo The McMenamins have announced a national tour. The sibling act, who are also debuting at the Byron Bay Bluesfest this year, will perform at The Vanguard in Sydney later this month. The band is made up of brother and sister team Fleur and Simon, who have been making music together for a decade and built up a phenomenal discography of daring, expressive folk songs. Their fourth album ‘Sand and Stone’ was released this month and contains 11 new songs, based upon the experiences the siblings have had over the past three years including tales of their families, travelling and thoughts about the world. “The songs are heart-felt expressions of how we feel. I guess we are lucky to be able to express ourselves through music,” Fleur said. After their self-titled debut album was
released in 2005, The McMenamins were showered with critical acclaim and then went on a national tour supporting Australian music legends Missy Higgins, Ben Lee and Ray LaMontagne, playing for crowds of up to 15,000 people. The band’s success continued two years later with their follow up album ‘In This Light’, which led to an invitation to play on the showcase at the Canadian Music Week in Toronto. More recently, The McMenamins released their third album ‘Long Time Gone’ to acclaim and also embarked on two tours of the USA including playing an Official Showcase at the Folk Alliance 2012 in Tennessee. They also raised their profile by appearing on television, college radio and campus shows in the USA. Now after their American blitz, the pair are back in their home country and ready to dazzle their fan base with live music. The McMenamins’ upcoming national tour will be held in large venues, which will help

RUSH HOUR FOR TICKETS TO TUCKER
A
merican funny man Chris Tucker will have audiences in stitches when he embarks on his first ever Australian stand-up tour. Chris Tucker, who has enjoyed a remarkably successful career in comedy and film, will visit Australia later this year and perform at The Star Event Centre in Sydney on Tuesday, June 18. Known for his quick, sharp wit and spot-on delivery, Tucker began carving out a reputation for himself on the American stand-up circuit when he was just 19-years-old. He rose to fame quickly and became a favourite on television series, ‘Def Comedy Jam’ before scoring his break out role alongside rapper Ice Cube in the cult movie ‘Friday’. Since then, Tucker has appeared in many popular movies including sci-fi classic ‘The Fifth Element’ and Quentin Tarantino’s beloved hit, ‘Jackie Brown’. The movie that he has probably become
most renowned for is buddy comedy blockbuster ‘Rush Hour’ where he starred alongside action hero Jackie Chan in the role of fast talking Detective James Carter. Tucker’s hysterical performances delighted audiences and made ‘Rush Hour’ a smash hit, breaking box office records and earning the film trilogy $850 million worldwide. After a six-year break from the big screen, Tucker shocked his fans last year by costarring alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in the award-winning film ‘Silver Linings Playbook’. In that movie, Tucker showed a different side of his acting abilities and gave a sensitive, thoughtful portrayal of a mental patient, earning him praise from critics. Yet despite the success Tucker has achieved throughout his film career, he has always considered stand up comedy to be his true calling. During his hiatus from starring in movies, Tucker has been working the stand up circuit
07
and is reclaiming his position as comedy king. “People might not know this but I’ve been busy working. I went back to stand up about six years ago and have been touring for the last few years in the States and now we’re taking it international,” Tucker said. Don’t miss the opportunity to see comedic sensation Chris Tucker light up the room when
he brings his stand up routines to Australia for the first time. Chris Tucker will be performing at The Star Event Centre on Tuesday, June 18. Tickets go on sale today, (Friday, April 5) at 9am. For more information on the performance, call 132 849 or visit the website: www.ticketek. com.au.
The uniqueness of her music has been celebrated by critics and she has won four Australian Entertainment ‘MO’ Awards including the prestigious Peter Allen Variety Performer of the Year Award in 2004. Her status as a veteran musician on the club circuit also earned her two Australian Club Entertainment Awards in 2001 and 2004.
This accomplished, crowd-pleasing performer will be bringing her music to the stage along with six-piece retro band, Dig This, for a show that is guaranteed to impress. Lisa Crouch and Dig This will play a free show at St Marys Rugby League Club on Saturday, April 6 at 9pm. For more information, visit www.stmarysleagues.com.au.
YOU’LL DIG THIS: LISA CROUCH LIVE
W
ith a varied and distinguished performing career behind her, Lisa Crouch and her band, Dig This will be a delight when they rock on stage at St Marys Rugby League Club. The award-winning songbird has proved her musical talent over the years, and has such a versatile repertoire that she is comfortable delivering a wide range of music from emotional, moving ballads to raunchy rock songs. Not satisfied with merely standing on stage and singing, Lisa Crouch has turned her unique talents to all kinds of performances throughout her career and has played in musicals, cabaret shows and live bands. Her strong, stunning vocals are accompanied on stage by her other musical talents and she often includes live instrumental sequences in her shows; playing the trumpet, trombone, piano and guitar for a rich listening experience. On top of that, she also brings a lively
stage presence to all of her performances and blends music with her one-of-a-kind sense of humour. Although she has been a favourite on the pub and club scene for years, Lisa expanded her horizons when she boarded the Regal Princess Cruise ship and made her debut at sea, wowing the mostly American passengers. She followed this up by playing on the Norwegian Crown Odyssey on their IndiaAfrica tour. Lisa showed off her acting skills when she performed in the Lyric Theatre Company production of the beloved musical ‘Sunday in the Park with George’ and has also featured in other stage shows including ‘The Wiz’, ‘Godspell’, ‘The Pyjama Game’ and ‘Romeo & J uliet’. As well as her solo performances, Lisa has appeared on stage alongside some of the music industry’s biggest stars such as Kate Ceberano, James Blundell, James Reyne and Johnny Tillotson.

f you’ve always thought you were on your way to being the next Nicole Kidman or Hugh Jackman then the Richmond Players want you. The acting group, based in Richmond, are on the hunt for a new talented cast for their upcoming production of the contemporary Broadway musical ‘Nine – The Musical’. Acting hopefuls will need to be available to light up the stage when the show opens in August, to be performed at the gorgeous, heritage-listed theatre at the Richmond School of Arts. Set in Italy, this engaging play tells the story of famous film director Guido Contini who is going through a rough patch in both his personal and professional lives. Suffering from writer’s block, Guido is unable to think of a subject for his next film and in the meantime is also struggling to handle the women in his life with his wife, mistress, leading lady, producer and critics putting on the pressure.
It’s the ladies’ time to shine on the stage in this production, with ‘Nine’ being unusual for the many female roles it offers, with nine female leads and substantial featured ensemble parts. The director is also on the look out for multi-talented performers as the play has a women-only chorus that sings during the show in four-part harmony which means all vocal types, from trilling sopranos to deep basses, are welcome. ‘Nine’ is truly a music-filled event bound to have the audience tapping their feet along with the overture; perfect for displaying the cast’s vocal capabilities to the many catchy songs that are the highlight of the show. The fun isn’t just for the adults though, with skilled youngsters also wanted for auditions to act in a flashback scene which shows nineyear-old Guido hanging out with his young friends. The show’s production team is filled with Richmond Players’ finest talent, with
familiar faces from last year’s season in Naomi Degabriele and Caroline Van Oosterum, returning as Musical Director and Choreographer respectively. There is also a fresh face in the form of Paul Smith, a rising talent who will be making his debut as director with the Players. Anyone will interest in auditioning for

Lead singer Hayley Williams said that the album was self-titled on purpose to make a statement about the direction Paramore is going in, and that she wanted to reintroduce the band to the world. Although the album’s official release date is set in this week, 20 lucky people were able to get a sneak peak of the record’s new material at an exclusive listening party held during the Soundwave Festival. The album has already had two singles released, ‘Now’ and ‘Still Into You’ which have pleased fans. ‘Now’ has also been received positively by critics who have praised it for its strong vocals and edgy, alternative vibe. Second single ‘Still Into You’,
released last month, is a catchy, fun pop hit with new wave influences. Music review website musicfeeds.com spoke glowingly of the single, referring to it as “a poppy, upbeat, sugary sweet number”. ‘Paramore’ is set to be one of the season’s hottest albums.

MAZE CAFE
MARVELOUS MERLOT FOR TOMATO MEATLOAF by David Ellis
F
ighting mildew for the whole growing season and repairing damage from a couple of pretty severe thunderstorms that ripped a lot of the leaf canopy away – and some of the fruit as well – hardly seems an ideal start to making what’s turned out to be an excellent wine. But that’s what happened to Andrew Margan on his vineyard at Broke in the NSW Hunter Valley in 2011. And he says those adversities in fact led to fruit he subsequently harvested having great concentration of flavour, tannins and colour that’s been reflected in his 2011 Margan Merlot. And interestingly, the vines for this wine were grown on their own roots, rather than being grafted – something he says local sceptics shook their heads about, but which he says he’s glad he did and has been wellrewarded by. His 2011 Margan Merlot is a marvelous Merlot that’s got a fresh, fruit-driven palate
with forward plum and mulberry flavours and quite delicate spice. It’s one to enjoy young or keep for a bit of cellaring to develop earthy regional Hunter complexity. Pay just $20 and partner it with delicious spaghetti and meatballs, or a tomato-infused meatloaf. One to note: Blue Pyrenees that was founded by French Champagne houses Krug and Charles Heidsieck in the Pyrenees region (180 kilometres north-west of Melbourne) in 1963, has done marvels with its signature sparkling Midnight Cuvee. The latest release, the 2009, continues the tradition of the fruit being handpicked under the light of a full moon to avoid fruit damage in the heat of the day. A great drop for anytime celebrations, pay $32 and enjoy Midnight Cuvee well-chilled at that next party – or with caviar-topped creamy scrambled eggs and a warm crunchy baguette for a special occasion or Sunday brunch.
oused in the lively Penrith RSL, Maze Café is the perfect place to catch up with friends for some good food and then some entertainment. The café is nestled conveniently upstairs amongst the bar, games and regular live entertainment that Penrith RSL has to offer, meaning that the fun isn’t over after your plate is cleared! Yet despite being close to so many attractions, the Maze Café is still quiet, making it a relaxing experience where it is easy to have good conversation with dining partners without having to shout over noise. The menu has options to suit all tastes and its affordable prices won’t break the budget. A range of starters are on offer to begin with, including warm feta tarts, sweet potato and feta balls, Caesar salad and the classic yet delicious garlic bread, which has four generously sized slices in one portion. For the main dish, vegetarians and pasta-lovers alike will enjoy the vegetarian pasta, which mixes pumpkin, Spanish onion, mushrooms and red peppers, all tossed in a rich cream and tomato garlic sauce. There is also chilli prawn and crab, boscaiola and Bolognese on the menu with each pasta offered with the choice of either spaghetti or penne. Among the seafood dishes, the grilled perch fillet is a stand-out, with tender fish

covered in a creamy, decadent lemon butter sauce. It also comes served with crispy chips and a fresh salad on the side. Carnivores will enjoy the items from the grill, including a hearty 350 gram Sirloin New York cut steak and a fancy 220 gram Wagyu rump. Diners are free to choose from a range of flavoursome sauces including béarnaise, red wine gravy and green peppercorn. A mouth-watering range of burgers are available too, from a healthy vegetable-lentil burger with lettuce, beetroot, tomato and mint yoghurt served on a toasted Turkish bun; to an indulgent beef burger made with angus beef, tasty cheese, lettuce, tomato, bacon and homemade tomato relish. After the main menu, the sweet-toothed can pick from a fine selection of yummy cakes and baked goods or enjoy a well-made, steaming hot cup of coffee. With its tasty food and convenient location, Maze Café is a great venue to drop by for lunch or dinner with friends. CHATTER ON THE BOX with Nathan Taylor
S
o Grant Denyer is leaving ‘Sunrise’ for the second time… good! Yes, I know that statement won’t make me very popular amongst the 200,000 odd ‘Sunrise’ viewers but I’m willing to live with it. I’ve never been the biggest fan of Denyer since day one. Now I’m sure he’s a really nice guy and I have nothing against him personally of course but I just didn’t like watching him on television. In fact, I became a ‘Today’ show viewer because of it and found it really hard to watch ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ because he hosted it. There was just something about his style of presenting that didn’t sit right with me. I do have a caring side though and hope he recovers from his illness (chronic fatigue) and
returns to TV, maybe behind the scenes. Some good news for fans of the following shows because they’ve just been renewed in the US – ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’, ‘Person of Interest’, ‘Elementary’, ‘Hawaii Five-0’, ‘The Mentalist’, ‘Blue Bloods’, ‘The Good Wife’, ‘CSI’, ‘2 Broke Girls’, ‘Mike & Molly’,’ Cougar Town’, ‘The Amazing Race’, ‘Survivor’ and ‘Undercover Boss’. Sad news last week with the passing of ‘Pie in the Sky’ actor Richard Griffiths due to heart surgery complications. May he R.I.P. ‘Big Brother’ producers have declared
they want more oldies auditioning for this year’s series. It’s been reported that head honchos want a broader mix in terms of age and profession. I really enjoyed ‘Big Brother’ last year but the addition of more diverse characters can only make this year’s series even better. Still no word yet if my parents are interested in signing up. Look out world ‘The Voice’ returns this Sunday 6.30pm on Channel Nine. It will then continue throughout the week from 7pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The show was a huge hit last year especially through the Blind Auditions phase, which we will get to see all next week. In case you’ve forgotten,
Ricky Martin joins the cast replacing Keith Urban, who can now be seen Friday nights on ‘American Idol’. Now with ‘The Voice’ airing at 7pm weeknights, I’m now going to have to IQ my beloved ‘Home and Away’ – darn time clashes! ‘Come Dine With Me Australia’ is on the hunt for contestants. If you’ve never seen this fun little show, here’s the premise: over four days, four people who’ve never previously met will look around each other’s homes, sample each other’s cooking, and pass judgment on each other’s entertaining skills. The winning host each week will win a generous cash prize. Apply at www.comedinewithme.com.au.

HILARITY, ACROBATICS AND MAYHEM
T
his Easter the whole family can be entertained by the new show at the Q Theatre, ‘Kaput’. Comic genius Tom Flanagan will share his funny side with Penrith audiences in ‘Kaput’ in the upcoming April school holidays. Known for his larger than life stage presence and endless energy, Tom Flanagan has had audiences enthralled with his previous shows ‘Tom Tom Crew’, ‘Circus Oz’ and ‘The Crack’ and his new production ‘Kaput’ will have the same manic hilarity. The crowd will be caught up in the mayhem when Flanagan brings his clumsy ‘Mr Fixit’ character alive, taking one step forward and two steps back in this show, which is simultaneously funny and poignant. Flanagan shows off his comic talents in a show that is filled with slapstick humour, amazing acrobatics and complete and utter silliness. This fabulous show has already wowed audiences in Australia and overseas and was
nominated for the Best Circus and Physical Theatre Award at the 2012 Adelaide Fringe Festival. It also won the Mervyn Stutter’s Spirit of the Fringe Award at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It received rave reviews from critics, who praised ‘Kaput’ for its mix of high-flying acrobatics and edgy comedy: “amazing acrobatics… an interactive, funny and dangerously clever show. A good laugh, excellent for kids and all ages”. The show was produced by the awardwinning, renowned Strut & Fret, the creators of Edinburgh smash hits ‘Tom Tom Crew’, ‘Feasting on Flesh’ and ‘Le Gateau Chocolat’. ‘Kaput’ will be performed at the Q Theatre, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Tuesday, April 23 and Wednesday, April 24 for two shows at 10am and midday. Tickets are $19 or $72 for a family pass (group of four). For bookings, call 4723 7600 or visit www.jspac.com.au.

A TOUCH OF THE DUTCH AT THE REMBRANDT
C
rowds turned out in their thousands over the glorious Easter long weekend to celebrate the annual St Marys Dutch Festival held at the Rembrandt Dutch Club. The minute you walked through the front gate you were transported to the land of tulips and windmills. The festival hosted a range of Dutch traditions including clog making demonstrations, Dutch music and folk dancing. Revellers were also treated to an array of traditional Dutch cuisine of croquettes, poffertjes (mini pancakes) and Dutch beer. Other activities on the day included apple bobbing, a portable shooting range and market stalls. The children didn’t miss out either with free carnival rides, colourful attractions and face painting to keep them busy all day. Long-time Dutch festival goer, Brenda Lacaze, said this year’s festival was the best one yet. “The colour and excitement of this year’s Dutch Festival made it one to remember,” she said. “I encourage people to head down next year and get into the Dutch spirit!” - Nathan Taylor
