APRIL SUN IN SYDNEY
SHANNON COCHRANE catches up with Todd Hunter, the lead singer of legendary rock band Dragon, to discuss the band’s hits and the secret to their four decades of success...
E
ver since their formation on New Year’s Eve in 1973, Dragon has charmed audiences with their unique radiofriendly brand of rock and 40 years on the band is celebrating its longevity with a national tour. Dragon climbed to success with smash hits such as ‘April Sun in Cuba’, ‘Are You Old Enough?’ and ‘Rain’ but the band’s rock and roll lifestyle took its toll with Todd Hunter summing up the 70’s by saying, “it was far too wild for me… I hated it”. Since those heady days, the band has disbanded and reformed many times but its classic music has remained constant. Hunter, who is the only original member in Dragon’s current line-up, rounded up Mark Williams, Bruce Reid and Pete Drummond in 2006 to help reclaim the band’s former glory. In the seven short years that have passed, the quartet has been hard at work rocking out at over 495 shows across the globe. To commemorate their long-lived presence on Australia’s music scene, Dragon will be holding a 40th Anniversary tour which coincides with the release of new album ‘The Dragon Years – 40th Anniversary Collection’. With a lengthy repertoire of hits, limiting the CD’s track list to just 40 songs was a challenge for Hunter but ultimately he opted for a mix of the classics and newer material.

Disc one will delight Dragon fans with all of the chart-topping hits that made them famous, while disc two features newer songs recorded by the reformed line-up. “We’ve got a lot of different albums all from different eras and different times so it’s good to have one cohesive CD,” Hunter said. “It’s a good balance of stuff and basically it’s everything… if you want to get all the Dragon music, it’s there.” For Hunter, who spent the 90’s composing music for film and television, there is something irreplaceable about the buzz of performing for a live crowd. “Live is where it’s happening – it’s where you sell CDs, it’s where you go to work,” he said. “You don’t want to live off royalties, you want to actually be a playing musician… when you get in front of a crowd of 5,000 people and they’re singing your songs incredibly loudly, it’s unbelievably great fun.” While bands from the 60’s and 70’s are often typecast as ‘oldies’ music, Dragon has developed a fan base which bridges the generational divide with young people rediscovering their music on the radio and internet. This means that Hunter and his band mates have the freedom to play a wide variety of gigs, from small and intimate performances Phone: 4722 2998 Fax: 4731 6255

to large arena shows. “Because the songs have been around for so long they’re still played on radio, there’s no one particular crowd that you play to, you play to anyone so one night you can play at the middle of a hundred seat theatre and the next night you can play at a festival, it just works just as well,” Hunter said. “There’s something about when you get a huge amount of people singing really loudly and the band really has to try to play louder than the crowd; it’s always great fun but also there’s a thing about intimate shows where you’re so close you can see everything that’s going on, there’s a different sort of intimacy

around a fire, it’s like ‘wow’. So these songs will survive long after the band is gone,” he said. Dragon’s status as legends of Australian rock music was cemented in 2008 when they were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, which came as a complete surprise to Hunter. “That was nice, that was sort of surprisingly emotional… you know, you actually feel the community of Australian music,” he said. Despite all the accolades he’s received throughout his career, it seems that the biggest thrill of all for Hunter is just being able to live his childhood dream of being in a band
It’s very therapeutic just because of the energy that comes back at you that goes on there. In those cases, the crowd is part of the band, they’ve got to sing all of the songs.” The upcoming tour will be held at arenas across Australia and according to Hunter, fans can expect a loud, lively atmosphere: “It’s more like a party than a concert, it’s just like a birthday party for 40 years and everyone’s invited”. So what’s the secret to Dragon’s success and longevity? “I have no idea but I’m really thankful for it,” Hunter said laughing. “The songs don’t exist in a particular time, they’re melodic, so easy to sing… you walk up a deserted beach in the middle of the night up in Cairns and hear people singing ‘Rain’
and playing music. “You travel all a whole day you get to the show and you’re feeling not so great… after two hours of playing, you feel so much better, it’s very therapeutic just because of the energy that comes back at you, everybody’s singing, you’re having such a great time,” he said.
Dragon will bring their 40th Anniversary Australian tour to the Sydney Opera House Studio on Saturday, April 13 at 8pm. Tickets range from $60 to $75. For bookings or more information, call 9250 7777 or visit www.sydneyoperahouse. com.

LUCA CIARLA KEEPS YOU IN THE LOOP
A
cclaimed Italian violinist Luca Ciarla will be travelling down under, introducing Australian audiences to a world of gorgeous sounds and melodies in ‘Fiddler in the Loop’. The show will be performed for one night only at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Friday, April 5. Among the most creative and innovative violinists of the modern era, Luca Ciarla creates sound that transcends genre boundaries and trail blazes a fresh, unique musical path. With his seductive acoustic music, Ciarla manages to strike the balance between technical perfection and spontaneous improvisation with a repertoire that blends the best from traditional and contemporary sounds. In his show ‘Fiddler in the Loop’, Ciarla graces the stage with only his violin, a loop machine and an interesting video animation running in the background made by famed
Italian artist Keizart. Audiences will get to experience the unique atmosphere of the show, which experiments with musical composition by superimposing tracks of Ciarla’s live performances and playing them back on the loop machine. ‘Fiddler in the Loop’ allows Ciarla to have fun with his on-stage persona and create multiple musical alter egos, adding new ‘virtuosoism’ during the show. Every time this talented violinist appears on stage he brings a new energy and vibe, ensuring that no two performances are ever the same and his music is constantly unpredictable and evolving. Ciarla has a reputation for his remarkable talents on the violin and distinctive style, which has seen him perform at many festivals and concerts in over 30 countries on every continent. He has played at the National Arts Festival in South Africa, the Java Jazz Festival in Indonesia, the Esplanade in Singapore, the

enrith residents will get to indulge in a sensational night of music when the Sydney Symphony Orchestra comes to town. The Sydney Symphony Orchestra will work its magic at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, April 6 at an event not to be missed, also featuring acclaimed classical pianist Kathryn Selby. As Australia’s leading orchestra, the Sydney Symphony has become a cultural icon of our nation and performs around 150 concerts per year, wowing a combined annual audience of over 350,000 people. This special concert will mix drama and nostalgia, with the powerful sounds of a Mozart piano concerto and the stunning, decadent music from the Vienna of Gustav Klimt. The program will feature the ravishing music of Franz Schreker’s Chamber Symphony alongside Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 27 in B flat, K595 and other magical works.
A whimsical, nostalgic atmosphere is created with the Chamber Symphony by Franz Schreker who was renowned as the ultimate Romantic at the dawn of the modern era. Like Mozart, Schreker had a tendency towards the theatrical and his work demonstrates finely tuned craftsmanship. Using only 24 players, he shapes a world of sound full of rich opulence and ravishing harmonies that reflect his 19th century background but also drifts into a realm of shadows and nostalgia. Bringing together this special performance is multi-award winning pianist Kathryn Selby who has performed with the world’s leading orchestras. The Sydney Symphony Orchestra will play alongside Kathryn Selby at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, April 6 at 7pm. CULTURAL HIGHLIGHT OF SYDNEY
A
spectacular Australian cast will bring ‘Carmen’, one of the most popular operas ever written, to the stage in Sydney. After months of preparation, Opera Australia has unveiled the amazing outdoor opera event, ‘Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour: Carmen’, which will be shown in an exclusive three-week season. The beautiful scenery of Sydney Harbour, with its glittering water and iconic skyline, is a perfect backdrop for the drama and emotion of ‘Carmen’. The story of ‘Carmen’, which has captured hearts and imaginations for over a century, centres on young soldier Don Jose who leaves his childhood sweetheart behind and deserts the army after being enchanted by the spell of an alluring gypsy. A fiery display of human emotion is acted out on stage when Don Jose loses the gypsy to a charming toreador named Escamillo who becomes an object of jealousy and wrath.
Composer Bizet’s seductive, dramatic music sets the scene and conjures up an atmosphere of desire, defiance and doom with some of the world’s best loved songs including the ‘Habanera’, ‘Seguidilla’, ‘Flower Song’ and ‘Toreador Song’. This classic opera is staged to perfection by one of the nation’s most daring directors, Gale Edwards. Perhaps the most impressive thing about this production is the set itself – a platform which resembles a blood-stained bullfighting ring will visually represent the opera’s setting while six red Hollywood-type letters spelling out ‘Carmen’ will make the production feel larger-than-life. The Artistic Director of Opera Australia, Lyndon Terracini, said that the show is a must-see event: “From around the harbour’s edge in Sydney, you can now see the bright lights and letters of ‘CARMEN’. We love grand spectacle and this is opera like no other, complete with spectacular costumes, fireworks
and the priceless Sydney skyline. Carmen will undoubtedly be the cultural highlight of Sydney in 2013”. ‘Carmen’ will show at the Royal Botanic
Gardens Sydney from Friday, March 22 to Friday, April 12. Tickets range from $79 to $295. For bookings call 9318 8200 or visit www.operaonsydneyharbour.com.au.

PARADOXES AND SHADES OF LIGHT
P
repare to see a dance performance like no other as two talented Australian choreographers harness the power of light and transform it into physical movement in the playful and highly unique show ‘Luminous Flux’. This innovative, must-see double-bill performance will be showing at Parramatta’s Riverside Theatres for two nights only on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6. It will be staged by Tasdance, a daring dance company from Tasmania who has previously travelled to Parramatta in 2008 for the show, ‘One for Sorrow, Two for Joy’. Audiences will witness two playful and accessible pieces of contemporary dance – Tanja Liedtke’s ‘Enter Twilight’ and the world premiere season of Byron Perry’s ‘Light Entertainment’. The former is a beautiful and sophisticated work by Tanja Liedtke, of the Sydney Dance Company, who uses dance to examine the paradoxes in life’s rituals and presents themes
such as light and dark, virtuous and evil. ‘Enter Twilight’ was created by Liedtke for the company in 2004 prior to her untimely death just three years later. It displays the stunning work of a truly talented, creative young choreographer and has consistently received rave reviews from Australia’s dance industry. Now the dancers of Tasdance will take on the challenge of bringing this touching dance to life on the stage, focusing on the precision and detail in the movement vocabulary. The other part of ‘Luminous Flux’ will be devoted to Byron Perry’s ‘Light Entertainment’ which sees dancers use their physical form to interpret light in a way that is both mystical and light-hearted. From his beginnings as a talented and experienced dancer himself, Perry has gone on to become one of Australia’s most dynamic choreographers. His show is theatrical and plays with a multiplicity of meanings, crafted to show

After going down during a stakeout, Bond is presumed dead and uses this as a cover to retire from his life of duty as a spy. When the MI6 servers are hacked into and the agency’s offices explode, Bond returns and seeks to be readmitted as an agent. Unfortunately, the once legendary spy isn’t in good shape and fails physical and psychological examinations but his faithful boss M agrees to reinstate him. On top of the attacks, the MI6 is also facing political pressure in the form of Gareth Mallory, the new Intelligence and Security Committee chairman who lacks faith in Bond’s abilities and suggests he is too old to be working in the field. Despite these setbacks, Bond devotes himself to tracing and stopping the attacker before they manage to cause even more chaos in Britain’s beleaguered secret agency. Now, his fourth release ‘#willpower’ is set to rock the charts like its predecessors. Anticipation for the album is ripe, with will.i.am initially claiming that it would be ready in late 2011. A series of setbacks meant that the release was delayed until this year, in the meantime singles from the album have already been released last year – ‘T. H. E. (The Hardest Ever)’ featuring an eclectic mix of vocals from Jennifer Lopez and Mick Jagger, and ‘This Is Love’, which peaked at number one in the UK. ‘Scream & Shout’, a collaboration with Britney Spears, was also a smash hit for will.i.am last year.
On the album’s up and coming single ‘#thatPOWER’, the hip hop legend teams up with pop star heartthrob Justin Bieber for an uptempo song that has received warm critical reception so far. With will.i.am’s history of chart-topping songs and star-studded line up of featured artists, ‘#willpower’ is bound to thrill fans.

CAVE IN TO THE BLACK BOTTLE BUBBLY THIS EASTER by David Ellis
W
hile for many Australians Easter is a four-day holiday with chocolate eggs and bangers on the barbie, in Spain it’s a much more serious religious occasion. Easter is celebrated with countrywide processions in which massive wooden crosses are borne tortuously through the streets, and huge floats depict religious scenes – the floats are carried shoulder-high by muscly teams who train for months. And when these processions are over, the people go back to their homes to further respect the meaning of Easter – until Easter Sunday, when they break-out with celebratory family feasting and the drinking of Cava, a traditional Spanish sparkling wine. One of the most-popular of these Cavas is Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut, a non-vintage drop dubbed “Black Bottle Bubbly” because of the bottle it comes in, and which is now the biggest-selling sparkling wine in the world, selling over 200 million bottles a year.
Also one of the best-selling bubblies in Australia, it’s a Methode Champenoise-style drop made from three Spanish grape varieties – Parellada, Macabeo and Xarel-lo – that after two fermentations is cellared in-bottle for 24 months in 54 kilometres of caves near Barcelona. Bargain buying for a mass-produced sparkling of such quality, it costs just $15 a bottle and you’ll find it will be ideal with an Easter (or any other Sunday) seafood brunch. One to note: We’re unashamed Chardonnay buffs and can never resist Cumulus Estate’s drop from their ideal growing location in cool climate high-country outside Orange in NSW’s central west. Their just-released 2011 Chardonnay is deservedly Cumulus Estate’s proud flagship white, a premium drop ($35) with beautiful melon and stone-fruit flavours, creamy nutty oak and a crisp acidity. It is a perfect match with white meat dishes or creamy pastas.
ince opening in 2009, premier restaurant Osso has tantalised diners and wine connoisseurs, but their latest menu exceeds the highest of expectations. Elegantly balancing simple flavours with detail, each dish at Osso is sophisticated and delectable. Be sure to start with the entrees as there are dishes on this menu you will not want to miss. From their gourmet range, the tart of goats curd with asparagus, olives and heirloom tomato is a light dish bursting with flavour from the olives and asparagus. The buffalo mozzarella is equally delicious; the Pane de Casa bread is fresh and the perfect size for balancing on top a slice of the mozzarella with capsicum pepperonata. If seafood is more to your liking then why not try the seared squid served with chorizo and chickpeas? The squid in this colourful dish is tender and the chorizo appropriately smoky. Or you can order freshly shucked oysters. And for a starter that is more filling, try the lamb belly with carrot puree or the preserved lemon and thyme marinated quail. Osso, in true form, have a wide range of steaks and ribs but the short rib twice cooked simply cannot be surpassed. Tender and succulent, the meat falls off the bone and the garlic and thyme steak butter melts in your mouth – though truthfully, this steak is cooked to perfection and doesn’t need any
embellishment. Other recommended dishes include the Queensland sourced sirloin and scotch fillet, the Haverick’s dry-aged certified porterhouse on the bone, and for something a little different why not try the braised pork neck served with sautéed leek, cabbage and muscatels. For sides, be sure to order the best chips in Penrith and a garden salad, both of which show that even the simplest of dishes can still be prepared with care and delicacy. And the perfect show of culinary expertise would not be complete without an encore. If dining in a group, be sure to order a few different desserts so that you may try them all! For a light dessert after a filling meal, the summer berries and strawberry soup is delightful. Served with a scoop of mascarpone sorbet this dish certainly lives up to its summer vibe; the raspberries and blueberries are delicious and the sweet soup will have you wishing it were appropriate to lick the bowl clean. Also sample the mango parfait with pistachio macarons. A very pretty dish, the mango parfait is smooth and tastes as good as it looks and the pistachio crumble is delectable. Another favourite is the chocolate tart with lemon curd and lemon sorbet. Osso is located within Penrith Panthers. Call 4720 5588 for reservations. - Reviewed by Cassandra O’Connor

CHATTER ON THE BOX with Nathan Taylor
S
o, we begin the week with ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ now that all the judges have finally been announced – or have they? Last week Mel B had her seat put in layby after her former employer Channel Seven blocked her move to Nine. The former Spice Girl will now head to the courts to try and get the issue resolved. We also found out that Kyle Sandilands has switched networks and will resume his place on the judges’ table. Making their debuts on the show will be former contestant Timomatic and British comedian Dawn French. I must say I applaud Nine for thinking outside the box with French, I think she’ll be a wonderful addition. It’s still early to tell how
Timomatic will go, and we all know what we’ll get with Kyle. I must say if I was choosing the panel I would’ve liked to have seen someone like Glenn Robbins (‘The Panel’, ‘Kath & Kim’) get a shot. Robbins is well-known and very successful on the Aussie TV landscape, not to mention he’s hilarious all the time. I think he would’ve bounced off well with someone like Dawn French. Ellen DeGeneres was in town last weekend filming segments for her popular talkshow. Penrith local, Jackie Warner, who was at the event, said it was absolutely brilliant. “They didn’t do rehearsals, so they had to
stop filming and see what they had to do. We were all dancing and mainly standing for the entire 90 minute filming of the show. Wherever you sat it was a good view to see Ellen. She was so happy to see us dancing in 30 degree weather. I wish they filmed 30 minutes longer because it just went too fast”. You may have seen the promos for Seven’s ‘Celebrity Splash’… horrible right? Yes, the cast for the much-hyped celebrity diving show was announced last week with people like Brynne Edelsten, Denise Drysdale, Andrew Symonds and Leisel Jones all set to walk the plank. Now I won’t criticise this show too much until I’ve actually seen an episode
but in all honesty how long will it last? Already the show is tanking in other countries, so why will it work here? Expect the series to be played out but also expect a number of timeslot changes along the way. ‘Celebrity Splash’ airs after Easter. FOX8 has secured the rights to new US drama series ‘Bates Motel’, which serves as a prequel to Hitchcock’s famed ‘Psycho’ movie. From the producers of ‘Lost’ and ‘Friday Night Lights’, the plot revolves around a dark, twisted back-story of Norman and his relationship with his mother, Norma, and how she helped forge his life as a serial killer. ‘Bates Motel’ premieres on FOX8 Sunday, May 26.

TAKE YOUR IMAGINATION FOR A RIDE
F
rom the moment you catch a glimpse of light on the stage until the performers take a final bow, be prepared for War Horse to take your imagination for a
ride. The National Theatre of Great Britain and Global Creatures have created a feature that will see that you find yourself in a different place, another era, experiencing an intensity of emotion that you would never dream could come from watching actors and actresses on a stage. A story of war, a story of pain and a story of love comes alive before your eyes in one of the most unique productions that you will ever see. The story follows the relationship between a boy, Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who he loves so deeply that he risks his life to save him. Each character, no matter how crucial to the story line, gives a stellar performance, bringing a sense of honesty and truth to the
stage but the true heroes of War Horse are the creatures and their puppeteers. Birds soar over the audience, controlled by talented puppeteers who are everything but hidden from the audience, a goose is rolled across the stage hissing and chasing the ‘human’ characters prompting many laughs from the audience; but it is the horses that will take your breath away. These giant puppets, controlled by a number of puppeteers simultaneously are expertly designed and expertly controlled; so much so that the puppeteers take on the persona of the creature, leaving the audience to truly believe that the horse has come to life. The flick of a tail, the shake of a mane and the beat of its heart come so naturally, as if you were watching a living, breathing horse on stage. War Horse has been dazzling audiences across the world since 2007 and the Sydney show at the Lyric Theatre will be no exception. No matter what age you are or where you
come from, expect that War Horse will leave a lasting imprint on your memory. The love of parents for their son, the love of a boy for his horse, the trials of war, the pain
of losing a friend; War Horse has something for everyone. Reviewed by Katherine Tweed on the opening night of War Horse, March 21.

BEAT THE BUNNY BULGE AT EASTER

Sydney’s TreeTop Adventure Park is a fun and safe way to help balance this chocolate binge by burning off some unwanted calories. Those willing enough to attempt the four adventure courses will: • Take more than 800 steps • Complete 60 physical challenges • Soar through the trees on 14 flying foxes • Experience an increase in heart rate, between 100 to 150 beats per minute • Expend hundreds of calories The adventurous kids that complete the children’s course, for ages three to nine, will: • Take more than 1,000 steps • Complete 25 physical challenges • Be propelled through the trees on three fl ying foxes TreeTop Adventure Park owner, Sandrine
Gaymard, said the course and challenges had been laid out in such a way to both entertain and challenge participants. “We often find that people lose themselves in having a fun experience without realising how much energy they are burning and how many health benefits they are gaining,” she said. Sydney’s TreeTop Adventure Park will be replacing the traditional Easter egg hunt this year with a free monkey hunt at 2pm on Easter Saturday (March 30). The monkey hunt will involve finding hidden prizes including soft toys, frisbees and drink bottles, scattered throughout bushland at the Park. Further Monkey Hunts will take place in the school holidays, with dates to be announced on the TreeTop Facebook page. TreeTop Adventure Park will be providing drawing tools for those interested in creating an artwork of the Western Sydney Parklands.
The best pictures will be displayed on the TreeTop Facebook page with prizes offered to the most imaginative picture. Bush drawing will take place in the school holidays, with dates to

HI-5 HEAD TO HOYTS PENRITH
F
or years, Australian children have grown up watching the lively performers of Hi-5 on TV and now they’re making the jump to the big screen with their movie release ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’, which chronicles the search for new cast members. After weeks of secretive try-outs, the producers of Hi-5 found three fresh, young faces to join current members Stevie and Lauren in entertaining and educating kids across the country. Fans of the children’s group will be officially introduced to the new line-up in the film ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’ and at a series of meet and greet events at Hoyts cinemas. One of the freshly picked cast members Ainsley Melham caught up with FYI and said that both kids and their parents can enjoy the film, which features all the music and colour of a normal Hi-5 production but also explores the behind-the-scenes audition process. Ainsley, a Bathurst native who began tap dancing at the tender age of three, decided
to audition after graduating from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He and his classmates were told of a casting call for a children’s TV show but did not realise that it was Hi-5 until the auditions had taken place. “It was an intense audition period, everything was filmed, so there were eyes on you all the time but it was very exciting,” Ainsley said. With hordes of fans both locally and overseas, the stars of Hi-5 have been able to connect with young people in a unique way. Ainsley believes that the key to Hi-5’s success is the way the performers are playful yet don’t talk down to kids. “They were looking for people who could be childlike and be playful but without being patronising and condescending because I think it’s very hard, especially in children’s entertainment, not to talk down to children. We think that they operate on a different level and we tend to dumb our communication

down a little bit, which is the wrong way to go about it…it’s really just about being playful and interacting on an imaginative level,” he said. ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’ is out now in
Hoyts cinemas nationally and the group will be appearing at Hoyts Penrith on Saturday, April 20 for a meet and greet session with fans. For more information, visit www.hoyts.com.au.
