BERNARD FANNING’S TALE OF DEPARTURE
03
If you have missed out on getting tickets to see Bernard Fanning in concert at the Enmore Theatre this August, never fear. FYI brings you the next best thing... a one-on-one interview with the former Powderfinger frontman... 1. Congratulations on the #1 debut for ‘Departures’. You’ve now had six albums debut at #1 across your career, which is an amazing achievement. Were you just as excited about this one? If you mean as equally unexcited as always then yes certainly. To be honest, I find most of the stuff where musicians and artists are ranked against each other, to be a bit irrelevant. Don’t get me wrong I am happy that people buy my records, but I honestly don’t mind if more of them buy a Pseudo Echo record in any given week. 2. You said from the start you had no interest in making ‘Tea & Sympathy 2’ and that the album would take a few listens. Given that, you must be pleased – and I guess relieved – with how it has been received? Yeah I am pleased with how it has been received. I think overall there has been pretty constructive criticism and in most cases a pretty positive response. I realise that for some fans that mentality of wanting to change things and broaden my musical ideas, is not really what they are after. But I wouldn’t be able to sleep straight if I ended up making records based on anything other than what I wanted to hear. The way I look at it now, you know six months after finishing making it, is that there are things that I could have done better but I suppose that is always going to be the case. 3. Has it been liberating to work as a solo artist rather than within the confines of a multi-headed band? Yeah in some ways I suppose it has. There
FYi Issue 145 Editor Troy Dodds Troy.Dodds@mediaview.com.au
is no-one else to please or consider in terms of what sort of sounds you are going for... For me that was the main reason I wanted out of the band, because I wanted to be able to make decisions for myself and my family, without having to put them to a committee. 4. The songs for the album were written in Madrid (Bernard’s wife is Spanish and they recently lived there for 18 months). What’s the music scene like over there and has living and writing there influenced your music? I didn’t really see many bands over in Madrid, except for flamenco stuff, which was great. Actually I did see Wilco which was incredible. They are a revelation that band. I don’t know if where you are has much influence on what you are writing, unless you are consciously trying to make it so. I certainly wasn’t trying to shoe horn any Spanish influence into my songs. I just went about my business how I usually do, which is to sit down and apply myself and chip away at songs until I think they are ready. 5. You have said that these were the hardest vocal sessions you’ve ever done in producing an album. Mainly it was that there were tonnes of banks of vocals that had to be pieced together. When I made the demos the songs were coming together over a matter of weeks at a time so it was a more gradual process but when I was doing it with Joe (Chiccarelli – US producer) it was pretty much a song altogether in one block. One song ‘Call You Home’ had about 25 vocal tracks on it so it kind of adds up when

I wanted to be able to make decisions for myself and my family... you are doing it again and again. 6. The title track ‘Departures – Blue Toowong Skies’ is a deeply personal song about the death of your brother. Did you set out wanting to write something about him or did the song just happen without real thought? No I never really meant for that to be the style of song that ended up on the album, but that song just kind of demanded it. It fell out one day… very quickly when compared to the other songs on the record. The song was actually more about my Dad and the area Toowong where we all grew up. 7. Are you excited about taking some of
these new sounds on to the road? How are rehearsals going and what can fans expect at the live shows? Rehearsals have been great. I have a newish band with a couple of guys from the Tea and Sympathy stuff and a couple of new guys as well. Most of the newer stuff is pretty rhythm heavy, so I was looking for a band that was a little bit more groove driven. I am actually surprised at how well the two albums have blended side by side despite the fact that they sound very different. I think that the nature of both albums is that there are lots of light and shade moments, so that is definitely something that we work towards live as well – having pretty dramatic dynamics of both power and beauty.

JASMINE RAE LAUNCHES NEW ALBUM
I
t has only been five short years since Jasmine Rae burst onto the country music scene with her debut single but she has already become one of Australia’s most promising young stars. Now the talented musician will launch her new album ‘If I Want To’ at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, August 3. Fans of Rae have been able to follow her career progression, from a fun, fresh-faced young woman barely out of her teens when she recorded her debut single ‘Country Singer’ in 2008, into a sophisticated country music singer-songwriter. Her third studio album ‘If I Want To’ is sure to please her followers and gain some new fans as well, as it manages to keep her classic style while also exploring a new artistic direction for Rae as she matures and grows in life. “I feel the songs on my new album are a reflection of the journey I’ve been on in the last two years,” she said.
“This album is an honest conversation between the listener and myself.” Rae’s latest offering is deeply personal and reflects on the journey she has taken over the past few years, with 12 of the 13 tracks on the album original songs. She also took the opportunity to collaborate with some of country music’s hottest names, including both members of Aussie band McAlister Kemp and veteran songwriter Allan Caswell. The Melbourne-born songbird also got to visit the country music capital of the world, Nashville, to produce the album with the talented Luke Wooten. A range of musical influences can be heard on ‘If I Want To’, from girl-power anthem ‘My Daddy’s Name’ to RnB inspired ‘Lazy Boy’. The light and playful track ‘Bad Boys Get Me Good’ is even a duet with country superstar Kellie Pickler. The deeply emotional nature of the album, combined with Jasmine Rae’s beautiful voice
and the contribution of country music legends makes ‘If I Want To’ a fabulous album and the launch at Rooty Hill RSL will give fans the chance to hear the new tracks before anyone else. Jasmine Rae will launch her new album
‘If I Want To’ at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, August 3 at 8pm. Tickets are $12 for members or $15 for visitors. For bookings or more information on the launch, call 9625 5500 or visit www. rootyhillrsl.com.au.

MUSE SHOW WHY THEY’RE THE TOP ACT
B
ritish band Muse may be well known for their trailblazing progressive rock but beyond their award-winning musicianship, the group is also skilled at lighting up the stage with their electrifying presence. Australian fans of the Devon-born trio will get the chance to experience Muse’s amazing stage show when they perform down under, playing at Sydney’s Allphones Arena on Friday, December 13. The band, who will be touring alongside special guests Birds of Tokyo, have risen up from their humble roots to become one of the world’s most popular rock bands, being voted the Best Act in the World Today at the 2012 Q Awards. They have sold over 15 million records and released six acclaimed studio albums, won 7 MTV Awards, 2 Brit Awards, 9 NME Awards, 6 Q Awards, 4 Kerrang Awards and even scored the Best Rock Album Grammy in 2011. Throughout their career, Muse’s Australian
fans have supported them – from their earliest shows down under in 2000 when they played at a pub and RSL on the East Coast, to this year’s massive tour. Muse’s catchy progressive rock riffs have made them constant chart-toppers, with songs such as ‘Knights of Cydonia’ and ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ faring well with critics and listeners alike. Their latest album, ‘The 2nd Law’, is Muse’s sixth studio record and celebrates and develops the band’s famous guitar shredding, piano thumping, boundary pushing sound that has garnered them so much success in the past. Inspiration for the music ranges from classical composers such as Rachmaninoff and Berlioz, to famed Hollywood composers Hans Zimmer and John Williams and the soundtracks of sci-fi films. The band upheld their reputation for forays into unique musical territory with their experimental instrumentation, including using

BIG HAIR, BIG CHANGE, BIG PRODUCTION!
A
llow yourself to take a step into the past and enjoy the colourful, retro music and heart-warming plotline of ‘Hairspray’. The beloved musical will be coming to Parramatta’s Riverside Theatre for a season from Friday, July 26 to Saturday, August 10. Known as one of the most popular musicals, ‘Hairspray’ is set in 1962 during an era of social and political change – the restrictions and prejudices of the 1950’s are on their way out and young people are beginning to embrace new ways of thinking. Baltimore teenager Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and a heart of gold, is just a regular girl caught up in the era and who has a passion for dancing. When Tracy wins a coveted spot on a TV dance program ‘The Corny Collins Show’, she goes from being an outsider to a renowned celebrity among her peers. The quirky, outgoing and trendsetting teen has to face off against the TV show’s reigning
narrow-minded princess, deal with prejudice and racism shown towards her friends and also try to win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin. Featuring an all-star Australian cast, ‘Hairspray’ is bound to be the feel-good show of the year, with veteran entertainment legend Jon English taking the fabulous role of Edna Turnblad. English has a wide and distinguished history in entertainment, starring in musicals, drama and comedy shows, releasing 15 albums and writing scores and music for film and television series. Many audience members may recognise him from his role as Judas in the original production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and his Logie winning performance as Jonathon Garret in the acclaimed television mini-series ‘Against the Wind’. Joining English on stage is Helpmann Award nominated actor Wayne Scott Kermond, who has previously appeared in

‘Singin’ In The Rain’ and ‘Hot Shoe Shuffle’, and Cle Morgan who reprises her role as Motormouth Maybelle after a recent national tour of ‘Hairspray’. Finally, talented and fresh-faced newcomer Jessica Rookeward steals the spotlight as the
lovable, relatable Tracy Turnblad who stands her ground and dances her way to the top. ‘Hairspray’ will show at the Riverside Theatre in Parramatta from Friday, July 26 to Saturday, August 10. Tickets range from $25 to $49. For bookings call 8839 3399.
Critics are also starting to notice and Urban Stone has received nominations for the ACE Awards Original Music Group of the Year, and they have also had success in competitions such as The Sydney Division of the World Wide ‘Global Battle of the Bands’,
‘Clash’ Battle of the Bands and ‘Liverpool Idol’ rock band competition. Urban Stone will play at St Marys Rugby League Club on Saturday, July 27 from 9pm. Entry is free. For more information, visit www. stmarysleagues.com.au.
PUTTING IN THE HARD YARDS
I
n a digital world where wannabe singers are more likely to seek fame on the internet or appear on ‘The Voice’, one ambitious young band is here to prove that there is still fresh blood willing to put in the hard yards playing live shows around the traps at Sydney’s pubs and clubs. Sydney-based quartet Urban Stone have been together for two years and have played the pub and club circuit, building up a solid fanbase and providing crowds with a great night of entertainment. The rockers will be playing at St Marys Rugby League Club on Saturday, July 27 in a free show that is perfect for anyone who wants to get out of the house on the weekend and have some fun. The band plays a unique blend of funkrock and also draws on influences from new wave music and old school 80’s rock. On top of their impressive technical musicianship, Urban Stone also delights audiences with their powerful stage presence
and rocking style that will have audiences up on their feet dancing. Their music has been described as a catchy, unique mixture of rock and funk music with the band also exploring other genres including acoustic and power-pop, punk rock, melodic metal and blues music. Urban Stone performs an entertaining combination of their own original compositions as well as a repertoire of over 100 cover songs, with a variety that takes a trip down memory lane. You’ll be singing along to classic rock and pop songs from the 70’s, 80’s and the current Top 40 hits. The band is made up of four talented, passionate young performers – powerhouse rocker Tina Garufi who fronts the quartet, Dan Skeed, Slap Kelvin King and ‘The Groovemeister’ Matt Briscoe-Hough. They have already played alongside some of Australia’s most popular rock artists such as The Screaming Jets, The Angels, Ian Moss of Cold Chisel, Gangajang and others.

THE LONG ROAD TO OVERNIGHT SUCCESS By Shane Jacobson
A
ustralian funnyman Shane Jacobson never fails to have his audience in stitches when he’s on stage or appearing in film and that same wicked sense of humour shines through in written form as well. Jacobson has penned a soon-to-be released book The Long Road to Overnight Success, which details all the ups and downs of his career as a comedian and actor in a hilariously warm tone. The actor first came to public attention in 2006 when he starred in his breakout film, the hilarious ‘Kenny’, that scored attention and gave him a whole new fanbase. But while that may have been Jacobson’s first taste of true fame, the actor and writer already had a wealth of experience in the entertainment industry behind him – in fact, he was born to be in the spotlight and had been impressing his family and friends with his theatrics ever since he was young. He has cultivated a diverse and impressive body of work to his name, and appeared in productions as diverse as ‘Charlie and Boots’
alongside Paul Hogan, the ‘Beaconsfield’ telemovie where he played Brant Webb, the ‘Jack Irish’ ABC TV series with Guy Pearce and the stage show ‘Guys and Dolls’. He has also hosted ‘Top Gear Australia’ and acted in the acclaimed series ‘The Time Of Our Lives’ more recently. In his book The Long Road to Overnight Success, Jacobson reflects on the paths he’s taken in life and the varied career he has enjoyed, from appearing with an all-girl revue to the many odd jobs he did as a young man; from his first breaks on radio to his mega popular movie ‘Kenny’. Fans of ‘Kenny’ will also enjoy the behind the scenes knowledge in the book, including details of how Jacobson and his brother Clay came to make the film about a portaloo plumber that took the world by storm. Other very personal stories about Jacobson’s life are also revealed in The Long Road to Overnight Success, which provides a well-rounded picture of one of Australia’s funniest actors and unveils his warm and witty personality.

DYNAMIC CONCERT BY VOX CHOIR
S
leeping takes up so much of our time so it’s not surprising that the act has inspired many artistic works, including the upcoming concert ‘Luminous
Night’. Take the chance to see young musicians shine on stage when Sydney Philharmonia’s dynamic youth choir VOX presents ‘Luminous Night’ at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Sunday, August 4. The youth choir is made up of musicians aged 18 to 26-years and works under the inspiring guidance of Music Director Elizabeth Scott. ‘Luminous Night’ is a musical celebration of mid-winter, with its haunting and beautiful tone inspired by night, sleep and dreams. It features a repertoire of stunning music including ‘Sure on this Shining Night’ in settings by Samuel Barber and Morten Lauridsen; ‘Five Hebrew Love Songs and Alleluia’ by Eric Whitacre; ‘Dark Night of the Soul and Luminous Night of the Soul’ by Ola
Gjeilo and works by the young Australian composer Daniel Brinsmead. VOX have been praised in the past for their talent, after playing alongside the prestigious Sydney Symphony Orchestra in their live performances for the ‘Lord of the Rings’ film trilogy sound track and in the concerts of Grieg’s ‘Peer Gynt’. They were also involved in the celebrations of the Sydney Festival’s 2013 opening and performed to welcome the Giant Rubber Duck into Darling Harbour. They also featured in Sydney Philharmonia’s ‘Light and Gold’ concerts that celebrated the music of Eric Whitacre. The Sydney Morning Herald praised VOX’s performance at the Sydney Opera House earlier this year, writing that: “time stood still… an inspiring demonstration of the power of the voice”. Music Director Elizabeth Scott is a seasoned veteran and has studied choral conducting, vocal performance and aural
training in Australia, Hungary and Germany. She is also Associate Conductor of Sydney Chamber Choir and a guest choral director of various other Sydney-based choirs. Scott’s passion for music education is further seen in her role as Music Projects Officer at The Arts Unit; a specialist branch of the Department of Education and Training. She also holds the position of Director of Vocal and Choral Studies at the
Conservatorium High School. Her expertise in musical directing combined with the talent and enthusiasm of VOX are sure to result in an awe-inspiring concert. VOX will perform ‘Luminous Night’ at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Sunday, August 4 at 3pm. Tickets are $20$25. ustralia’s favourite movie star Hugh Jackman is back in his most iconic role yet. The homegrown talent will don his blades once more for upcoming release ‘The Wolverine’, the sixth instalment in the X-Men film series. Taking off where 2006 film ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ left off, Jackman’s character, Logan is a mutant and once a member of the X-Men crime fighting team who is in Japan protecting the heir to a business empire. This role sees him caught up between various business and mob factions. While there are plenty of action packed, stereotypical fight and chase sequences in ‘The Wolverine’, the film also examines a more vulnerable, emotional side of its protagonist as he grapples with the question of immortality and reunites with some old friends. Hugh Jackman puts in a solid performance, acing both the physical demands of being Wolverine and the more emotional, introspective scenes; while Will Yun Lee also plays his part as the Silver Samurai convincingly.

ollowing on from previous instalments in the ‘Dynasty Warriors’ series, this game focuses on the lives and tales of the majestic kingdoms of Wei, Wu, Shu and Jin. The historical military and political figures of that time period battle it out to gain control over the Three Kingdoms of China. While the previous games were entertaining to gamers who enjoy military battle and alternate histories, ‘Dynasty Warriors 8’ goes one step further by creating even more fun play elements – multi-endings and extra modes are tweaked with to make a more engaging, challenging game. An intriguing new story lays at the heart of the game, with new episodes and characters that give gamers a different perspective of the drama and political happenings behind the Three Kingdoms story. Visually stunning, ‘Dynasty Warriors 8’ features brand new stages and environments including ravines, imposing castles and other beautiful surroundings.
wilight author Stephanie Meyer may be most famous for her tale about star-crossed lovers Edward and Bella but she’s also written another book, sci-fi tinged romance ‘The Host’, which was adapted into a movie early this year. The film is set in a futuristic, dystopic world where human beings have been assimilated into a new society by alien psychic parasites that are dubbed ‘souls’. Melanie is a human who is caught by ‘Seeker’ and has a soul called ‘Wanderer’ infused into her body to help the souls discover the location of the last non-assimilated human beings on earth. Despite having the procedure performed on her though, Melanie begins to rebel and fights to control her body and wrestle herself away from Wanderer, who starts to discover memories from Melanie’s past. As Melanie gradually reclaims her freedom and controls her own physical movements, the Seeker decides to infiltrate Melanie herself. The question is, will humanity survive?

merican rapping legend Jay Z is back with his 12th studio album and this one is set to eclipse any of his previous offerings, with much fanfare and anticipation being built up for its release. The album has already become the number 2 debut record of the year so far in the United States, and easily outstripped the performance of Jay Z’s prior albums ‘The Blueprint 3’ and ‘Watch the Throne’. Reaction to the album has been mixed, with many praising Jay Z for his musical style and lyrical content while some have criticised him for not being captivating enough. As most celebrity gossip lovers will be aware, Jay Z and his megastar musician wife Beyonce are constantly in the tabloids and ‘Magna Carta... Holy Grail’ features some very personal songs that address the nature of their relationship. The first single released from the album, ‘Open Letter’, refers to controversy surrounding the couple’s anniversary trip celebrated in Cuba.
Fans of hip hop will also enjoy the many cameos that fellow musicians make on the album – the lead single ‘Holy Grail’ features vocals from Justin Timberlake while Beyonce sings on the duet ‘Part II (On the Run)’ which is a catchy, emotive ballad intended to be a follow up to the 2002 hit ‘03 Bonnie and Clyde’.

NICE REWARD FROM AN UNUSUAL TASSIE BLEND by David Ellis
W
e don’t often get the opportunity to try wines out of Tasmania, and when offered not only a Tassie drop but one that was quite an unusual blend too, we jumped at it. And how surprisingly rewarded we were. Grey Sands vineyard is in the foggy Tamar Valley in Tasmania’s north, just 3.5ha in size and since being established in 1988 has produced a range of reds, with particular success with Merlot that was planted there in 1998. Then after a visit to New Zealand where he was impressed with blends that invariably included Malbec, Grey Sands winemaker Bob Richter decided on his return home to add that varietal to his vineyard as well. Those vines took seven years to produce any appreciable crops from the low-fertility grey sands (that give name to his vineyard) and when they finally did in 2012, he blended 45 per cent of that Malbec with 45 per cent of his Merlot and 10 per cent Cabernet Franc, calling
the resultant drop The Mattock. This is a beautifully deep-red wine with purple hues, rewarding plum and cherry flavours, silky tannins and some background savoury oak; it’s great value at $30, and worth investing in the delivery fee (particularly to enjoy with a hearty beef stroganoff). To order, give Bob a call on (03) 6396 1167 or email info@greysands.com.au. One to note: Both Hungary and Germany claim to have been the first to produce dessert wines that are made from fruit that’s deliberately left beyond normal harvest to be attacked by Botrytis Cinera, a fungus that sucks much of the water from that fruit, leaving it withered and with deep concentrations of natural fl avours. NSW’s Riverina produces some worldrecognised dessert wines, and now Shaw Vineyard in the Canberra wine district has released a delightful 2012 Botrytis Semillon that is beautifully fruit-flavoured, sweet and ideal to enjoy chilled with traditional puddings.

f you’re after a quick meal, or a bite to eat with friends over a few drinks, you can’t go past the Peachtree Hotel. You’ll find one of the best club bistros in Penrith! Why not try the delicious chicken breast, marinated in garlic and herbs. Or if you love your steak, challenge yourself and take on the 1KG grain fed rump. There’s of course plenty of schnitzel on the menu and seafood options as well. But perhaps the best of the best is the awesome burgers… all for a fantastic, low price. If the bistro doesn’t suit you, check out the awesome pizzas – best in town, some say!

JAZZ AND BLUES BY THE LAKESIDE
D
on your finest garb and get ready for a fun, classy day of jazz music and delicious food at Lakeside Restaurant. The restaurant will be holding an entertaining jazz themed event on Sunday, August 18 featuring performances by the Bob Gillespie Trio and Carol Ralph. Diners will be able to enjoy the smooth jazz sounds of these talented artists as they play a gorgeous, harmonic repertoire of jazz and blues standards that will be sure to have people up out of their seats and dancing. Hailing from Newcastle, Carol Ralph is among Australia’s premiere jazz musicians and has built up quite a reputation. She has performed all over the country at jazz festivals, with her style comparable to that of legendary singers Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith. The day will be a feast for the senses, with the food offered at Lakeside Restaurant also reflecting the jazz theme; in homage to the homeland where jazz and blues developed,
dishes will be inspired by the American South. An extravagant buffet will be served, with each meal capturing the flavours and tastes of classic Southern meals that will make diners feel like they’ve been transported to Louisiana or Mississippi. Anyone who wants to enjoy the jazz music outside in the sunshine can also purchase items from the Lakeside kiosk and eat outside surrounded by lovely views of the Regatta. The event is one of many special themed days that Lakeside regularly holds, with the restaurant’s owner Vince Capolupo stating that previous events had sold out quickly. “It’s just a nice, easy day… people can experience some different cuisines and try something different instead of going to the same restaurant all the time,” Mr Capolupo. The Jazz Day will be held at Lakeside Restaurant on Sunday, August 18 from 11.30am. For bookings or more information, call 4729 3222.

Channel Nine has announced a new dating series to air in 2014, ‘When Loves Come To Town’. The new series will feature 12 single city girls who have been unlucky in love and are heading to the furthest corners of Australia in order to find ‘the one’. They’ll meet the two most eligible bachelors in several towns around the country. They will date the guys and learn about their lives, passions and the unique connection they have with their local community. The girls will meet the bachelors’ friends and families, and spend time in what could be their new home. Ultimately, they must decide whether to stay in town and pursue a relationship, or try to find love in the next town. Check out audition information at lovetown.castasugar.com.

‘Big Brother’ returns to our screens this Monday with confirmation there will also be a Saturday show throughout the first four weeks of the season. Speaking of dating shows, the first Australian version of ‘The Bachelor’ has a host and it’s none other than Osher Günsberg. Who the hell is that you’re probably thinking? Well, it’s none other than former ‘Australian Idol’ host Andrew G, who has gone back to using his birth name of Osher. Interesting. See what living in trendy Los Angeles does to you after a while?

program is definitely going for a younger feel compared to ‘Sunrise’ and ‘Today’, which could either hurt them or work for them. No details yet as to when ‘Wake Up’ will get its first run. Ten’s Big Bash commentary team is getting stronger with each announcement. The latest big names to join Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist include Damien Fleming, Mark Waugh and former West Indian cricket Sir Viv Richards. The Big Bash begins in December. The ‘How I Met Your Mother’ episode where we finally meet the mother will air on
