HILARIOUS SHOW IS A LITTLE OFF ‘EURO’BEAT
03
SHANNON COCHRANE speaks to leading lady Kat Shaw about Penrith Musical Comedy Company’s latest hysterical production based on the ever popular Eurovision Song Contest...
T
he Eurovision Song Contest has become a cultural icon with millions of viewers tuning in each year to enjoy the multicultural music and glamour of the world’s most infamous talent quest. Now audiences in Penrith can get a taste of the campy glitz with ‘Eurobeat – Almost Eurovision’, an irreverent comedy, which emulates and mocks in equal measure. The hilarious musical, which was written by Craig Christie and Andrew Patterson, will be staged by the Penrith Musical Comedy Company at the Q Theatre throughout May. After a highly successful sold-out season of ‘Hairspray’ last year, the company has been preparing to leave their audience in stitches with this funny satire. Modeled closely on the format of the Eurovision Song Contest, ‘Eurobeat’ is set in Sarajevo and features a multicultural smorgasbord of music with 14 diverse acts, each representing a different country. Every nation and musical genre imaginable makes an appearance (and receives some light-hearted mocking) – there’s the slick Swedish pop of ‘AVLA’, Russian boy band ‘KGBoiz’, powerful Hungarian folk music from ‘The Molnar Sisters’ and the heartfelt Irish crooning of ‘Ronan Corr’. Between each song, the audience is treated to the hilarious presenting antics of the show’s hosts; glamorous athlete turned TV star Boyka and her dim-witted brother Sergei who introduce the acts and provide some light entertainment. Just like in the real Eurovision Song Contest, the winner will be decided by the audience members who are each given a nationality and ballot form upon entry, then get

to vote for their favourite act on the night. During the interval, the votes will be counted and the winner is announced, returning to the stage for a triumphant reprise of their song. The show’s format makes it highly dynamic with each performance offering something new to the audience, according to leading lady Kat Shaw. “We do a lot of ad lib and a lot of it happens on the night; it says in the beginning of the script, ‘here’s an outline but go for your life with what you want to do’ so if the audience laughs particularly loudly at one section then Grant and I, who are the hosts, play up on that… there’s a lot of room for us to be flexible with what we present,” Shaw said. Shaw added that people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy the catchy music and witty comedy of ‘Eurobeat’. “I was just saying to friends of mine on the weekend that I think people who love the Eurovision Song Contest and people that can’t tolerate it will both like it because there’s enough that’s like it to make it enjoyable and then it pokes a lot of fun at it, so it’s good. I say all the time that it’s like ‘The Simpsons’, there are jokes in there for the kids and then there are jokes that the kids won’t understand that the parents will think are hilarious.” Shaw, who co-hosts ‘Eurobeat’ alongside the company’s President Grant Jones, is a fulltime music and drama teacher who has been performing in musicals for 23 years. With the opening night of ‘Eurobeat’ getting closer, the cast have been busy at work preparing. “We’ve been rehearsing twice a week and there’s going to be a few more rehearsals as

There’s a lot of room for us to be flexible with what we present we lead up. Someone mentioned last night that we’ve only got 15 sleeps to go so it’s getting very exciting now. We step up now and do a few extra ones as we get closer to it but we’ve been going for a while,” Shaw said. Shaw is joined by a cast of 20 other talented performers from around the Sydney area, with most playing multiple roles in each country’s act throughout the show. And the Penrith Musical Comedy Company even made their own costumes. “All the costumes are done by one of the people in the cast who’s an amazing seamstress so she’s done all the costume designs and made the costumes for the show… there’s some really, really, really good performers in the show,” Shaw said.
With its witty send-up of Eurovision and interactive live voting system, ‘Eurobeat’ audience members are in for an exciting evening . “It’s lots of fun, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an audience have as much fun as they have in a show like this one,” Shaw said.
‘Eurobeat - Almost Eurovision’ will show at the Q Theatre at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre throughout May starting on Friday, May 3. Tickets are $30. For bookings or more information, call 4723 7600 or visit www.jspac.com.au.

THE WIGGLES TAKE OFF ON NEW TOUR
K
nown for their catchy songs and lovable personalities, The Wiggles are a staple of Aussie children’s entertainment and now there’s three fresh faces donning the band’s signature skivvies. The Wiggles are Australia’s most successful children’s act, formed originally in 1991 in Sydney by founding members Anthony Field, Phillip Wilcher, Murray Cook and Greg Page. After a line-up change last year, three new performers have joined The Wiggles and will be introduced to children across the nation in their upcoming ‘Taking Off’ tour, which will touch down at Penrith Panthers on Thursday, May 2. They will also appear at Westfield Penrith for a performance and meet and greet session on Wednesday, May 1. The band will still be led by original member and creator Anthony Field who will guide new talents Simon Pryce, Lachlan Gillespie and Emma Watkins. The tour follows on from the band’s recent CD and DVD releases entitled ‘Taking Off!’ that unveiled new material. Red wiggle Simon, who lived in Penrith for three years while studying drama locally, said that he is excited to return to the area. “I’ve been back a couple of times over the years, I’m really excited to be coming back,” he said. “There’s always so many changes that have happened through Penrith over the years, it’s amazing to see when you go back there… I have a lot of fond memories of the wonderful times when I studied there.” Emma, who will be wearing the yellow skivvy, said that the concert will have something for both old and new fans to enjoy. “It’s actually a mix of original Wiggles and the new Wiggles stuff… so it’s a great mixture of all the classics like ‘Hot Potato’ and ‘Toot Toot Chugga Chugga Big Red Car’ and there’s new songs from our new album ‘Taking Off’ like ‘Do the Propeller’, which is really great because the children can actually see all three of our voices which is a little bit different to the original Wiggles songs,” she said. “But they can also expect people that they know like Captain Feathersword, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Henry and Wags”. Similar to the original line-up, each of the new members brings something different and exciting to the band’s repertoire. Lachlan, the purple Wiggle, shares the same carefree and zany persona as his predecessor Jeff and comes up with inventive ideas and poems. Simon is known for his impressive operatic voice, while Emma is a skilled dancer and also plays the drums.
As the first ever female member of The Wiggles, Emma gets a lot of attention from young girls who dress up like her with bows in their hair. “I think essentially all of us are role models, doesn’t matter if we’re girls or boys or dinosaurs or octopuses but it is really nice and I think, we’ve actually heard the original Wiggles say that if they knew this was going to be a world phenomenon they would have chosen a girl in the first place… I think the time has come for it to change and I’m really honoured to be a part of it,” she said. All three performers have had experience with The Wiggles, having toured extensively in various back-up roles over the years. Despite this, they each embarked on an eight month training course where they followed the original Wiggles whilst touring around Australia and observed them in action on the stage. “We had the original Wiggles, watching them while we were on stage… taking more notice and being fed the opportunity to introduce songs and just listening to their stories on the road is pretty much the best way that we were able to learn,” Emma said. She said that simply getting the chance to meet and interact with children was good training for her role as a Wiggle. “The most important thing about being a Wiggle is that you’re genuine… it’s about having fun and the children enjoying the show, the whole show is about them,” she said. “If we’re having fun we always try to change up the show on stage then that reflects back into the audience and the audience’s vibe reflects onto us, which gives us a bit of a boost every day, so that’s really nice too,” she said. Having sold millions of CDs across the globe, The Wiggles have built up a reputation for being one of the greatest children’s groups ever and established a solid fan base among kids and parents alike. According to Emma, the group has been so successful due to the original members’ background in children’s education, which they studied at Sydney’s Macquarie University. “I think that grounding and understanding of children’s minds and how they think is really the basis of The Wiggles… Simon, Lachlan and I are trying to carry that legacy through,” she said. The Wiggles will bring their brand new ‘Taking Off’ tour to the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Thursday, May 2 for only two performances at 10am and 1pm. Tickets are $29. For bookings or more information, call 4720 5555 or visit www. penrith.panthers.com.au. They will also perform at Westfield Penrith the day prior on Wednesday, May 1 at 10.30am.

SCHEEL’S MUSICAL COMEDY
W
ith his perfect blend of sidesplitting comedy and catchy tunes, internationally renowned musical comedian David Scheel will light up the stage with his show ‘Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player’. Scheel, who first became successful in England, will perform his show at the Lighthouse Theatre at Penrith Anglican College on Saturday, May 11. Audience members are in for a treat with Scheel’s concerts, which present an eclectic range of music that will surprise and entertain. Be prepared to see everything from classic folk tunes played with a twist, the use of an iPod mini on stage, musical multi-tasking with each hand playing a different song and a medley of the worst 20 tunes ever written. Scheel will display his razor sharp wit when he tells hilarious true stories of the more absurd moments of his life. He also comments on the lavish lives of celebrities such as Britney Spears and Paris
Hilton, and takes topical digs at politicians and public fi gures. His hilarious songs include the already classic satire of ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and his newer offerings are equally impressive and include: ‘Everything You Need to Know About Music Explained in 5 Minutes’, ‘Funeral Oration for a Traffic Cone Putter’ and ‘Themes and Variations on a well-known cell phone ringtone’. While his shtick may be stand up comedy, Scheel also has seriously impressive musical talents and will wow listeners with two new, hauntingly beautiful piano solos, ‘Love in the Snow’ and ‘Whale Song’. Adelaide-born Scheel is well known in the United Kingdom, where he first began his entertainment career by starring in the famous satirical ‘News Revue’ on London’s West End before devising solo shows. ‘Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player’ was an instant hit and had sell-out London performances, which led to Scheel

Jones. The ‘I Only Want To Be With You’ tour celebrates the 50th anniversary of Dusty Springfield’s first hit as a solo artist and will play at the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Saturday, April 27. It stars performer Sheena Crouch as Dusty Springfield and will also feature very special guest Jacques Renay, who steps into the role of Tom Jones on stage. Crouch is a renowned singer who has wowed audiences in Australia and globally with her spot-on portrayal of Dusty. She will be channeling the spirit and style of the British songstress when she sings all her biggest hits such as ‘I Only Want To Be With You’, ‘I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself’, ‘You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me’, ‘Son of a Preacher Man’, ‘Little By Little’,
‘Wishin’ and Hopin’, ‘Look of Love’ and ‘Stay Awhile’. With her powerful soul tunes, Dusty Springfield topped charts and became an icon of the 1960’s and now fans can relive her music again with Crouch’s performance. Crouch will be joined by Jacques Renay who looks, sounds and acts like Welsh pop legend Tom Jones. Renay has toured across Europe and Australia and won the Mo Award and ACE Award for the Top Tribute Show in Australia. He has the voice and swagger to perfectly capture the essence of Tom Jones, taking fans on a journey through his catalogue of hits. Don’t miss an amazing night of music when these talented performers unite to pay tribute to two of the most iconic musicians of the 20th century. ‘I Only Want To Be With You’ will show at the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Saturday, April 27 at 7.30pm. AT LAST: THE ETTA JAMES STORY TOLD
S
he is remembered as one of the world’s greatest soul singers and now the amazing story of Etta James is being told on stage in ‘At Last: The Etta James Story’. The narrative concert, which recently ran to critical acclaim in Melbourne, will be coming to the Playhouse in the Sydney Opera House for one week from Tuesday, April 30. Australian singer Vika Bull will use her beautiful voice to sing all of Etta James’ most beloved songs including ‘Tell Mama’, ‘Something’s Got A Hold On Me’, ‘Pushover’, ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ and her iconic signature song ‘At Last’. With her commanding voice, Bull is the perfect choice to bring Etta’s story to life and will bring a wealth of experience to the role. In her long-lasting career Bull has performed alongside iconic musicians such as Paul Kelly, John Farnham, Tim Finn, The Black Sorrows and supported Bob Dylan, Sting, Joe Cocker and Billy Joel.
The show is a must-see for fans of Etta James or admirers of old-style jazz and soul music, telling the definitive story of the legendary singer who had a tumultuous life with many highs and lows. “It’s a narrative concert, me and our trumpet player tell the story of Etta James from the start to the finish, from her birth to her death and then we sing 24 of her songs and we try to cover all of her styles. She had a very long career… she did all sorts of things; jazz, blues, RnB, soul, funk,” Bull said. Like so many others, Etta’s music and life has touched Bull personally and inspired her throughout her career. “She has had a big influence. When I started singing professionally at 17 I listened to her a lot, I listened to her records and tried to copy her style because I loved the fact that she’s a very powerful singer,” she said. As a long-time admirer of Etta, Bull was apprehensive about stepping into the role so shortly after the songstress’ death early last
year and considered turning it down. Aware that she has big shoes to fill, Bull has done extensive preparation for the role by training with an opera teacher to protect her voice, listening to Etta’s music daily, watching performances and reading her autobiography. The result of her efforts is a stunning performance which truly pays homage to a
star whose music and charisma affected many people. ‘At Last: The Etta James Story’ will show at the Playhouse, Sydney Opera House from Tuesday, April 30 to Sunday, May 5. Tickets are $89. For bookings or more information, call 9250 7777 or visit www. atlasttheettajamesstory.com.au.

The track list is a combination of original material and covers of songs that have inspired and moved Callea over the years. A diverse range of genres are taken on, from 80’s ballads such as Cheap Tricks’ ‘The Flame’ and Heart’s ‘Alone’ through to 90’s songs ‘When You Believe’ and ‘Go the Distance’ and modern hits ‘Dance With My Father’ by Luther Vandross. Callea also uses his strong voice to sing Italian anthems ‘Nella Fantasia’ and ‘Di sole e d’azzurro’. As well as the covers, ‘Thirty’ also features two new songs that were co-written by Callea and are very personal to him. ‘My All’ is about meeting that special
someone while ‘I’ll Be The One’ is a raw, honest song about the darker times in life. Although the songs are very different in terms of genre, Callea has drawn them together into a cohesive album that takes the listener on an emotional journey.

GREAT VINTAGE ON THE CARDS FOR BENDIGO’S BLACKJACK by David Ellis
H
opefuls who flocked to Central Victoria’s Bendigo with the 1850’s gold rush brought with them not just a hunger for gold, but for the good life they hoped it would bring – and within five years of their arriving, others drawn by reports of the area’s wonderful agricultural lands were equally rushing in to plant wine grapes to ultimately slake the thirsts of the newly rich. Today the rolling hills of the Bendigo region continue to produce exceptional wines, amongst them BlackJack Vineyards whose Chortles Edge label walks off the shelves as a wine that truly over-delivers at its price point. Their just-released 2010 Chortles Edge Shiraz is a great drop, made from a vintage that was quite remarkable: 2008 and 2009 had both been bleak drought years, while 2011 and 2012 were years of torrential deluges. “You could almost say 2010 was an idyllic vintage squeezed in between those other years,” says Ian McKenzie, who shares ownership and winemaking duties at
BlackJack with Ken Pollack. “The rain we got in 2010 came just at the right time, falling mostly at night to refresh the vines and slow ripening a bit, giving us perfectly-conditioned fruit,” Ian says. And the resultant wine shows it with lots of juicy shiraz fruit flavours and nice tannins to finish, making an enjoyable drop to enjoy now or to develop further over three or four years. Excellent value at $18, this one has ‘big steak off the barbecue’ written all over it. One to note: Fifth Leg’s 2012 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc made from fruit from across West Australia’s various growing regions is a wine filled with varietal zesty and vivacious fruit flavours, and highlighted with tropical notes of lychee and passionfruit. So-named after the fossilised remains of a Tasmanian tiger with a bizarre fifth leg were found near parent company, Devil's Lair Winery in Margaret River, this is a label to keep an eye on. Pay $17.99 for the 2012 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and enjoy with seafood.
hether you’re in the mood for a quick coffee or a three course meal, the Coffee Club offers tasty food perfect for every occasion
imaginable. Located right next to the beautiful Nepean River, this restaurant is also an excellent venue to bring friends or family for a hearty meal followed by a waterside stroll. The dinner menu features a range of entrees including garlic bread, cajun chicken strips and a mezze plate for two but be sure to save room for the delicious mains. Undoubtedly one of the menu’s highlights is the rib eye fillet, which comes served with mash potato, honeyed carrots and asparagus, red wine jus and your choice of sauce. The plate was well presented and the fillet was cooked medium, just perfect for my liking. I had ordered the peppercorn sauce, which married perfectly with the red wine jus, the mash potato was creamy, the honeyed carrots had a subtle taste of honey as to not overpower the rest of the flavours on the plate and the asparagus had the perfect crunch. The fettuccine napoli is an amazing vegetarian pasta, covered in rich tomatoey sauce and packed with flavorful ingredients such as kalamata olives, baby spinach, mushrooms and garlic. The wait staff were very attentive and when time came for dessert, they were polite
enough to give my dining partner and I the blackboard specials and explain the selection of cakes in the window. I opted for a sticky date pudding with ice cream, perfect for the cool weather and to finish off a great main. The butterscotch sauce was just the right sweetness and the pudding itself was moist and deliciously more-ish. Among the advantages of the Coffee Club’s versatile menu is the all-day breakfast it offers, from traditional bacon and eggs to sweet dishes such as pancakes or french toast. My dining partner ordered the pancakes for dessert, which are sweet but still light and fluffy and come served with icecream, whipped cream, maple syrup and fresh strawberries. A variety of after dinner drinks are also available, from hot coffee and tea to milkshakes and smoothies, making the Coffee Club a suitable dining spot for all occasions. With great food and a welcoming and stylish atmosphere, the Coffee Club is ideal for catch ups and is also a lovely idea for a Mother’s Day meal. The Coffee Club is located by the Nepean River opposite Tench Reserve. For bookings or more information, call 4721 4677. - Reviewed by Shannon Cochrane and Julienne Caburian

CHATTER ON THE BOX with Nathan Taylor
L
ate last week we learnt that Mel B will not be joining the new-look ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ judging panel this year, after her employer, Channel Seven, won a court hearing that states the former Spice Girl must see out her contract with the network, which expires at the end of this year. There’s still no word yet on who will replace Mel but you can almost put your money on it that it will be a female. There have been reports that Geri Halliwell may take her spot, perhaps even Sophie Monk or Sharon Osbourne who are both very good at providing an off the cuff remark or two. I know it would be virtually impossible considering her star power of late in Hollywood, but how awesome would it be
to see Rebel Wilson as a judge? Rebel is the biggest thing in Hollywood right now and would be a perfect fit for the show. From one talent show to another and ‘The X-Factor’ has revealed it’s fourth judge – Redfoo, from ‘Party Rock Anthem’ duo, LMFAO. Foo, as I will be calling him, joins Dannii Minogue, Ronan Keating and Natalie Bassingthwaighte. It’s hard to say whether this is a good decision or not because we haven’t heard too much from him, but I think he’ll at least bring a ‘cool factor’ to the show and would very much be a crowd favourite. ‘The X-Factor’ airs later this year. Fantastic news for all those ‘Gleeks’ out
there with the hit show ‘Glee’ renewed for two more seasons. The show has struggled in Australia over the past year and is no where near as popular as it once was – it now airs on Ten’s digital channel ELEVEN. It’s important to mention, while the show doesn’t rate as well as it did a few years back, it’s still very popular on the music charts with songs from the show consistently charting around the world. Local factual series ‘Aussie Pickers’ has finally been given an airdate. Thursday, May 9 at 7.30pm will be the date and time when fans of the popular American series will be able to get their hands on the Aussie edition. The eight-part A&E series follows Lucas Callaghan
and Adam McDonald as they travel around Australia looking through attics, backyards and sheds in the search for forgotten relics. The boys will meet interesting characters along the way as they travel through places such as Toowoomba, Wagga Wagga, Victoria and Tasmania. Channel Seven have been teasing this show for weeks but new drama ‘A Place To Call Home’ will finally air at 8.30pm this Sunday, April 28. The show is set post-World War II in 1953 and is centred around nurse, Sarah Adams, who returns to Australia from London to look after her estranged mother. I expect it to rate very well for Seven.

GIVEAWAY: TOMMY FLEMING
ne of Ireland’s most beloved performers, Tommy Fleming, is getting ready to tour Australia with his beautiful music. Fleming will tour the country next month, performing his first show at Penrith’s Evan Theatre on Friday, May 3. The Irish singer, who has previously visited Australia seven times, said he was looking forward to the tour: “I’ve loved Australia ever since my first visit in 1994… I’m very, very excited at this point”. Fans can expect a “mixed bag” of songs on the set list with Fleming performing everything from his earlier hits to the fresh material from his latest album ‘Begin’. The record, which was released in early April, is a return to Fleming’s folk roots and an intensely personal tribute to his beloved parents who passed away last year. Writing and recording ‘Begin’ was a cathartic experience and required a lot of effort to get right. “It took me time… it took us all a great deal of interest and a great deal of detail to say, ‘I’m happy with this now, I want it to be released’,” Fleming said. Despite this, Fleming said that he never considers
his job difficult. “Sometimes it can be stressful, sometimes it can be overpowering, sometimes it can be empowering… never difficult, never ever difficult… there’s a quote, I don’t know who’s actually responsible for the quote that says, ‘when you find a job you love you will never ever work a day in your life’,” he said. Fleming has enjoyed a career that has spanned over 20 years and he has sold over 1.5 million albums across the globe. While this success has led him to be nicknamed ‘The Voice of Ireland’, Fleming himself remains modest. “I didn’t put that title on myself… to me it sounds a bit political, it sounds a bit like I’m about to march down the main street of Dublin shouting for workers rights,” he laughed. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great compliment, it’s a fantastic compliment but there are singers that are 20 years younger than I am and they are probably 50 times better than I am.” Tommy Fleming will perform at the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Friday, May 3 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $46.50 for adults or $31.50 for children aged four years to 16-years. For bookings call 4720 5555.
FYI has five prize packs to give away made up of Tommy Fleming’s CD ‘Begin’ and a double pass to his show at Penrith Panthers on Friday, May 3. For your chance to win, email the code word ‘IRELAND’ along with your name and phone number to competitions@mediaview.com.au. Entries close Wednesday, May 1. Authorised under NSW Permit Number LTPM/12/01138. Terms and conditions at www.westernweekender.com.au.
MAYA'S NOTEBOOK By Isabel Allende
T
he topical and heartbreaking issue of teenage addiction is tackled in bestselling author Isabel Allende’s latest novel Maya’s Notebook. The book is told through the perspective of 19-year-old Maya whose life in California descends into a gritty mess of drug addiction and crime. Escaping from her drama filled life, the wayward teen gets a second chance to clean herself up when her Chilean grandmother sends her packing to a distant island just off the southern coast of Chile. She lives among the Chilote people, a traditional rural society where inhabitants talk in an older form of Spanish and are largely free of the evils of modern culture such as materialism, crime and fast-paced living. Maya’s Notebook alternates between life in the United States and the events happening on the island Chiloe, with each strand of the story intertwining and unfolding at the same time. While Isabel Allende is a beloved and wellknown author, Maya’s Notebook is markedly different to her previous historical novels – in
this book, she takes on the challenge of writing in a contemporary setting and deals with gritty and difficult social issues using a realistic style of writing. Allende captures the point of view of a teenager perfectly, modeling the voice of Maya on that of her own teenage granddaughter who lives in San Francisco and creates a believable, captivating story that will touch readers. Born in Peru then raised in Chile, Allende is a prolific writer who has penned 18 books, a story collection, four memoirs and a trilogy of children’s novels. Her writing has been translated into over 27 languages and she has topped the bestseller charts across four continents. Some of her most popular books include Ines of My Soul, Daughter of Fortune and Portrait in Sepia. Allende has been praised by critics, with the Daily Mail referring to her as “a magical storyteller” and her latest novel, Maya’s Notebook, will undoubtedly continue her legacy as a talented writer.
Mother’s Day
MAKE YOUR MOTHER FEEL APPRECIATED
I
t only comes around once a year but when you think about it, mothers deserve to be celebrated every day. She may be the person that nags you to clean your room, or to drop over for dinner more often, but mothers play a very special role in our lives. Mum is the one who makes sure you don’t miss the big things in life like your first job interview or expensive flights overseas, and the little things too; like avoiding the temptation to skip meals when on the run and making sure you call your sister on her birthday. Mothers do so many things for us that we do not stop to thank them for, so here are a few ideas for sons and daughters looking to show their mum a little appreciation this Mother’s Day on May 12... Take mum out for lunch They say food is the key to a man’s heart but a brunch, morning tea, lunch or dinner will equally win over mum on Mother’s Day. If you know where her favourite coffee store or cake
19
shop is, organise for the family to make a stop over during the day. If you don’t know where to take her, there are plenty of great restaurants in Penrith holding Mother’s Day functions. St Marys Band Club, Kemps Creek Sporting and Bowling Club, Heritage Terrace Cafe, Windsor RSL and Springwood Sports Club are all holding special Mother’s Day celebrations. Buy mum flowers For sons especially, this tip is for you. It can be really difficult to show mum that you care and buying presents can be tricky. Even though you may feel that flowers don’t make a good gift because they eventually wilt, flowers are still a staple gift for mothers because they are stunning, smell beautiful, will look great on her coffee table and besides, it is the thought that counts. Mother’s Day is a busy day for florists though so be sure to place an order in
WW2435
advance as you may find the roadside florists will be all out of fresh flowers by midday. Why not check out High Street Blooms who currently have beautiful lilies and gerberas? A card will say it all It may seem quite trivial but nothing compares to a good, old-fashioned, hand written and thoughtful card. A card is cheap but has the potential to be the best present of
all because its message comes straight from the heart. It may seem daunting but try writing the message in the card yourself as opposed to buying one that has a generic message. Something as simple as ‘Thankyou’ and ‘I love you’ will put a smile on her face for weeks. Also try to find a unique card. There are lots of cute stores in Penrith to buy cards from such as Typo in Penrith Westfield.
