THE FUNNY SIDE OF AUSSIE POLITICS Jonathan Biggins tells SHANNON COCHRANE just how his team manages to add a comical twist to a sometimes bland political landscape in the 2013 Wharf Revue...

A

s the election season rolls on, doom and gloom may be invading the media but luckily the hilarious makers of the Wharf Revue are here to bring a bit of humour to Aussie politics. Regardless of your political affiliation, ‘Whoops! The Wharf Revue 2013’ has something for everyone as it takes equal aim at all parties and players in Australia’s political climate. Written and created by performer and media personality Jonathan Biggins along with Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott, the Wharf Revue made its first debut in 2000 and has since become a popular event. The bitingly satirical revue will tackle all the topical issues, from the local dramas in the Labor and Liberal parties through to international problems such as gun control in the United States or conflict in the Middle East. “We tend to have a scattergun across everybody so people can expect to see some of the new faces and also events around the world… the whole sort of bizarre nature of what’s been happening in politics in the last year or two, because that’s the theme of the show, the theatre of the absurd,” Biggins said. Audiences in Penrith will get the chance to join in on the political merriment early, with the Wharf Revue having its premiere at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Thursday, September 5. With the 24 hour media cycle and a fastpaced election campaign, so many gaffes have happened already on the campaign trail but Biggins said that show focuses more on the core issues of Australian politics rather than the superficial stunts. “The truly interesting thing as you keep

going, the sort of surface distractions that the media is obsessed with come and go every five minutes but we’ve been doing this now for 14 years and most of the issues we’re talking about haven’t changed,” he said. “This is the great irony, people say a week is a long time in politics and it might be on one level but on another it’s nothing, and the good thing about the show is that we try to get into the underlying issues rather than just the sparklers and firecrackers that the media now is becoming more and more interested in.” Although this year’s ‘Wharf Revue’ takes on all the big figures from Kevin Rudd to Tony Abbott and everyone in between, Biggins admitted that his favourite politician to perform on stage is acid-tongued former Prime Minister Paul Keating. “I do a Paul Keating, and he hasn’t been Prime Minister for 20 years but the great thing about Keating is that he keeps in the public eye and he’s a funny bloke himself... so he’s always a gift,” Biggins said. More recently, Wharf Revue co-star Amanda Bishop has had success (and caused outrage) with her television show ‘At Home With Julia’ but beyond that, Biggins insists that today’s crop of leaders are “pretty dull”. “They’re so controlled by their media advisors, so afraid of saying anything and the media jumps down their throats the minute they say anything,” he said. Bishop courted controversy when she portrayed risque elements of Julia Gillard’s personal life on TV, and although previous Wharf Revue shows have offended some people, Biggins said that the majority of audience members enjoyed the humour. “Most people don’t [get offended], all sides

It’s like collecting political cartoons about yourself... of politics take it with a grain of salt and have a laugh. The people who probably wouldn’t have a laugh don’t bother coming but those who do, from the world of politics, they enjoy it... it’s like collecting political cartoons about yourself, they would rather be mentioned than not,” he said. When the Wharf Revue first started over a decade ago, Biggins and his collaborators were doing a late night revue for the Sydney Theatre Company and were asked to make the content more political. Since then, the show has grown and become one of the most keenly anticipated annual theatre events. “We write about people they know, issues they know, the world they’re experiencing and it’s quite topical... it becomes a bit of an end of the year ‘let’s go and have a laugh’ rather than

all the ‘doom and gloom’ thing,” Biggins said. “I think people just enjoy the kind of release valve the show is, it just allows them to have a laugh and not worry for 90 minutes.”

‘Whoops! The Wharf Revue 2013’ will show at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre from Thursday, September 5 to Saturday, September 7. Tickets range from $44-$55. An election night after show party will be held on Saturday, September 7 with tickets priced at $20. For bookings or more information, call 4723 7600 or visit www.jspac.com.au.

PENRITH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

P

enrith music lovers will get the chance to witness the performances of two exciting new talents on stage. Penrith Symphony Orchestra will stage ‘Liszt and Schumann’ at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, August 31 in a fabulous night of music celebrating the work of two of history’s greatest composers. The orchestra will welcome Japaneseborn guest conductor Sadaharu Muramatsu to perform with them for the first time. Muramatsu is a talented musician who undertook postgraduate studies in conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and went on to do well in a range of major conducting competitions in Austria, Hungary, Romania and England. He first visited Australia on a Japanese government fellowship and studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music; he is now a resident of Sydney, works as Musical Director of Strathfield Symphony Orchestra and

teaches at the Wesley Institute. Dazzling young pianist Alex Zhang will also make his debut after graduating from the Conservatorium High School last year, where he was Outstanding Student of the Year. These skilled musicians will wow the audience with their performances in ‘Liszt and Schumann’, which opens with Liszt’s symphonic poem ‘Les Preludes’ and perfectly captures all the dramatic tension and foreboding of the work. The concert will then change mood with Beethoven’s ‘Piano Concerto No. 3’, one of his middle-period compositions that is reminiscent of the classical elegance of Mozart while also featuring some of the energy that became more apparent in his later works. Finally, the latter half of the concert will feature Schumann’s third symphony the ‘Rhenish’, which has a sunny and positive feel to it and was written in an intense period of creativity from the composer. The concert is part of the orchestra’s 25th

anniversary season, and there will be a free pre-concert talk prior to the show. Penrith Symphony Orchestra will perform ‘Liszt and Schumann’ at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, August

31 at 8pm. The pre-concert talk begins at 7.20pm in the Allan Mullins Hall. Tickets range from $20-$45. For bookings or more information, call 4723 7600 or visit www.jspac.com.au.

Pig said. This fun and talented band will be supported by special guests Chris Gillespie, an independent musician from the Blue Mountains, and new band The Time Being.

The Pigs will perform at Katoomba RSL on Saturday, August 31 at 8pm. Tickets are $15 plus booking fee or $20 at the door. For bookings or more information, visit www. moshtix.com.au or www.thepigs.com.au.

THE PIGS HEAD TO THE MOUNTAINS

F

resh from a European tour, Sydneybased band The Pigs are bringing their unique brand of bluegrass back home. The band will return to Katoomba RSL on Saturday, August 31 after a much celebrated show last year. Their catchy, clever covers of well-known songs have put The Pigs into the spotlight, with their appearances on ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ and ‘Spicks and Specks’ solidifying their popularity. Audiences will get to see the band fresh from a five week tour in Europe, where The Pigs performed in festivals in Skagen, Denmark, and Dresden and Nuremberg in Germany. The experience of touring overseas had the effect of allowing the band to hone their musical talents and performance skills, and bring them closer as they performed together almost every night and were living in each other’s pockets. “At one point on the autobahn near

Hamburg we were about to kill each other, but we didn’t. Now we’re playing better than ever before,” singer and guitarist T-Bone Pig said. With their palpable stage presence and trailblazing music, The Pigs are one of Sydney’s most talented rising bands. Their music continues to challenge perceptions and push the boundaries of pop music and bluegrass, creating an intriguing and highly enjoyable mix of genres. Their latest single ‘The Colour of the Light Coming Down’, taken from their third studio album ‘The Great Bluegrass Swindle’ has a strong punk energy and will introduce fans to a different side of the band. The single has been added to AMRAP’s community radio download system and also spent three weeks at number one on the AirIt Charts and the band hopes that their new music will delight fans. “It’s a pop song with some freakin’ fast banjo and there’s something very catchy about it… we sure love playing it,” songwriter Stretch

LOVE ELVIS PRESLEY TO THE MAX

E

lvis Presley may have left the building 36 years ago but his spirit lives on in the form of talented tribute artist Max Pellicano. The Monte Carlo-born American has been wowing audiences with his spot on impressions of ‘The King’ for decades and has managed to stand out as the world’s premier Elvis impersonator. Despite the fact that he has built his whole career on imitating the style and sound of Elvis Presley, Pellicano admits that he was not always a huge fan of the superstar singer. “I liked his music and stuff like that but my brother was more into Elvis than I was, he was a little older than me... I was more into The Beatles and Rolling Stones. I mean I was really young when Elvis came out, I was barely born, I was just a baby so I didn’t really grow up with that music,” Pellicano confessed. Pellicano discovered his affinity for Presley during the 1970’s while studying a dramatic arts degree at California State University.

“I was singing in nightclubs and stuff like that, I was working my way through college and I started doing a couple of Elvis songs in my set and people starting really turning onto it,” he said. After graduating, Pellicano signed up for a production of the musical ‘Bye Bye Birdie’, playing the lead role of Conrad Birdie who was directly inspired by Elvis Presley. “A promoter saw me in that show and hired me to go to Hawaii to do an Elvis show, and I was going to stay there for about three weeks and ended up staying there for three years.” Now, three decades on, he has toured the world with his ‘Elvis to the Max’ show and is set to visit Australia to perform ‘The Orchestral Sessions’. The seasoned entertainer will be playing at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, September 7 and said that audiences are in for a thrilling night of authentic Elvis music. “I’m going to be doing the ‘68 Comeback

Special and the Aloha from Hawaii concert and we’re going to have a string section, an orchestral section with us so the songs are going to be really big, it’s going to be really cool,” Pellicano said.

Max Pellicano will bring ‘Elvis to the Max – The Orchestral Sessions’ to Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, September 7 at 8pm. Tickets are $50. For bookings or more information, visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

tested. The event is an astounding array of multicultural stand-up comedy that can be enjoyed by both hardcore fans and newcomers.

‘The Good, The Bad and The Ethnic’ will show at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, August 24 at 8pm. Tickets are $43.50. For bookings or more information, call 9625 5500 or visit www. rootyhillrsl.com.au.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE ETHNIC

P

repare for a raucous night of comedy when the best local comedians unite to present their politically incorrect humour. ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ethnic’ features an all-star line-up of funnymen and is sure to have audiences in stitches when it is shown at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, August 24. This brand new show is full of witty observations, edgy quips and laugh-outloud skits and has already travelled around Australia’s major cities. Headlining the show is Joe Avati, one of Australia’s most beloved comedy exports who has returned to the country after a wildly successful sell-out Canadian tour. Known for his great delivery and fresh material, Avati was praised by the Herald Sun newspaper who said: “Avati takes it (comedy) to new heights with his uncanny ability to continually reinvent the genre”. He will be joined by the Turkish-Australian

comic Tahir, the bitingly funny actor who first came to public attention due to his role as Habib in the television show ‘Fat Pizza’. The line-up is completed by Australian Greek comedian George Kapiniaris of ‘Acropolis Now’ fame and Rob Shehadie who has appeared in the controversially funny ‘Fat Pizza’ and ‘Housos’. Each of these comedians have carved out a great reputation for themselves and with their talents combined, create an awesome night of entertainment. While many comedy acts rehash the same old jokes, ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ethnic’ is truly ground breaking and pushes the boundaries in a show that is like no other. Fast-paced and clever, this show features sketches, video presentations, songs and exciting new routines that have been rehearsed to perfection over the course of a year. Audiences can expect to be thrilled by some surprises that are trailblazing, mixed with some classic comedy that has been tried and

40 YEARS OF RICHARD CLAPTON

ell known Australian rock artist Richard Clapton will celebrate 40 successful years in the music industry with a show at Sydney’s State Theatre. The event will be a night of his greatest hits and memories from a jam-packed career, sure to leave fans singing and dancing along with this beloved icon. Growing up with cultural inspirations like the Rolling Stones, Richard was inspired to pick up that electric guitar and create the music he loved. He boarded a ship to London at the height of the 60’s, experimented with different bands and created that style that his fans all love. He returned to release his first album, ‘Prussian Blue’, in 1973 and hit number 2 on the national charts with the single ‘Girls On The Avenue’ in 1975, which thrust Richard into the musical spotlight. The following four decades saw Richard create 13 studio albums including 1977’s

‘Goodbye Tiger’, 1982’s ‘The Great Escape’ and his latest, 2012’s ‘Harlequin Nights’. He has produced an album for the famous Australian band INXS and also wrote and worked on songs with the band’s members and Cold Chisel. He toured with the Party Boys in 1983 before returning to his solo career, and was inducted into the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 1999. To celebrate such an extensive career, fans can expect to hear classics like ‘The Best Years Of Our Lives’, ‘Glory Road’, ‘Goodbye Tiger’, ‘Down In The Lucky Country’, ‘Girls On The Avenue’ and many more. Richard provides one of the greatest experiences with his songs that define a generation. Come see the Richard Clapton phenomenon live at the State Theatre on Saturday, November 2. EAT OUT THIS WEEKEND

OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE

I

ou certainly won’t leave Outback Steakhouse with an empty stomach that is for certain! The meals are of a generous portion, and taste brilliant! Why not try some cheesy fries or a famous Bloomin’ Onion for a starter, and then move on to one of the delicious steaks – we love the Victoria’s Fillet the best! It’s not only steak they do well here, either. The Alice Springs Chicken is one of the best items on the menu and a must try dish for any occasion. Make sure you book as it’s one of Penrith’s most popular restaurants. Panthers complex, Mulgoa Road, Penrith. Phone 4732 2577.

t can be easy to forget the great food that Nando’s has on offer, but quietly tucked away in the Centro Nepean complex, chicken and chips doesn’t get much better than this! Plus the range on the menu will simply amaze you but don’t forget to try the Portuguese flame grilled butterfly cut peri peri chicken ! With sit-in or take-away options, Nando’s is a great choice for the entire family or for your next party. You’ll love the spices, the flavour and the great prices… there’s very little not to love about Nando’s. They even do catering!

NANDOS

I

I

t’s the newest, hottest dining talking point in Penrith – and yes, it’s inside an RSL club! The Star Buffet at Penrith RSL has emerged as a sensational place to eat, with great food, even better prices and a fantastic atmosphere. If you think you know club buffets back to front, you’ve seen nothing until you’ve seen the great work that the team at Star Buffet do. Come with an empty stomach, because there’s so much food to eat, you won’t know where to fit it all in! Get there for lunch or dinner and make sure you get there early as the restaurant fills up quickly.

KEEP YOURSELF BUSY FOR NINE YEARS WITH A HANDY GUIDE by David Ellis

I

t’s not something we’ve given much thought to, but veteran wine industry author, lecturer and freelance writer, Robert Geddes mentioned the other day that to taste every one of the 3,500 current vintages of Australian wines available to us right now, we’d need to drink a different bottle of Aussie wine every day for more than nine years. And to help those of us who sometimes struggle to find just the right wine, Rob has tasted his way through all 3,500 for us (and some New Zealand ones as well) and put his resultant tasting notes into a handy 500 page pocket-sized reference book. Australian Wine Vintages 2014 is Rob’s 31st such edition and also covers everything from wine varieties to our Certified Organic and Biodynamic wineries, advice about vintage and flavour quality for every one of the wines reviewed, recommended best time by year to enjoy each of them, and notes on older wines dating back to the 90’s.

Label images will also help speed-up browsing the bottle-shop shelves for what you are after, there’s winery information and major wine region’s cellar door addresses, Rob’s Top 100 Wines and his Gold Star List. This is a great guide and would make a wonderful Christmas or other gift at just $34.95, including free postage; order a copy on www.australianwinevintages.com.au. One to note: The Canberra wine region is earning itself a solid reputation for classic Pinot Noir, and one maker you can rely on if you’re a fan of this varietal is Lerida Estate – owner Jim Lumbers and winemaker Malcolm Burdett have put particular effort into their 2011 Lake George Pinot Noir that well-rewards in this absolute ripper red. With cherry and red currant fruit flavours and savoury overtones, it says so much about just how good the Lake George terrain is. At $26.50 it’s a great drop to savour and enjoy with creamy truffled scrambled eggs brunch for a leisurely Sunday morning brunch.

Centro Nepean, Station Street, Penrith. Phone 4732 6464. f you’re after a quick meal, or a bite to eat with friends over a few drinks, you can’t go past the Peachtree Hotel. You’ll find one of the best club bistros in Penrith! Why not try the delicious chicken breast, marinated in garlic and herbs. Or if you love your steak, challenge yourself and take on the 1KG grain fed rump. There’s of course plenty of schnitzel on the menu and seafood options as well. But perhaps the best of the best is the awesome burgers… all for a fantastic, low price. If the bistro doesn’t suit you, check out the awesome pizzas – best in town, some say!

CHATTER ON THE BOX with Nathan Taylor

A

n interesting week of television chatter kicked off with the news that popular Foxtel channels TV1 and SF (Sci Fi) will end in December. The channels will close on December 31 after CBS Studios International, Sony Pictures Television International and NBC Universal weren’t able to negotiate a satisfactory carriage deal with Foxtel. The closure of the two channels will impact 35 fulltime staff. TV1 launched way back in 1995 while Sci Fi launched in 2006 before rebranding to SF not long ago. It’s understood TV1 may still have life yet via IPTV, Crackle and Apple TV. Here’s some amazing news for all the ‘Big

Brother’ fans out there with the announcement that ‘Late Night Feast’, a weekly show exploring a more grown-up side to the housemates, will air every Tuesday night at 9.30pm. A show like this has been demanded by hardcore fans including myself ever since Nine re-launched the series last year, with Big Brother finally listening. ‘Late Night Feast’ begins this Tuesday, August 27. I’m not sure what to make of this one but Channel Nine has announced that a children’s version of ‘The Voice’ called ‘The Voice Kids’ will air next year. The new series will showcase talented kids aged eight to 14 and is likely to feature a new host plus a new set of judges.

Nine still plans to air an ‘adult’ version of ‘The Voice’ although this will most likely get pushed back to the second half of 2014. Audition details can be found at www.thevoice.com.au. Speaking of auditions, ‘Masterchef Australia’ is calling out for contestants for next year’s series. You must be available for approximately 30 weeks of the year between November and July. Applications close on September 29. Visit www.masterchef.com.au. ‘Glee’ creator Ryan Murphy has revealed Corey Monteith’s character, Finn Hudson, will not die in the show, the same way Monteith did last month by an accidental drug overdose.

Murphy said producers did entertain the idea of the character dying the same way as Monteith but changed their minds. Instead it’s now likely Finn will die in secret, with no one knowing what actually killed him. Oprah Winfrey could be back in Australia before you know it, according to The Daily Telegraph. It’s understood she’s in talks with Qantas to return to Australia for a series of shows in its hangers… interesting concept. After some initial doubts over the impact of her last visit, it’s been revealed that 73 per cent of US travelers booked their trip Down Under this year because they were influenced by the ‘Big O’.

DON YOUR SAFARI SUIT, IT’S REWARDING TO FIND THE BIG FIVE by David Ellis

M

ost who head off to Southern Africa armed with bravado and binoculars, do so in the hope of bagging in their cameras the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Not all achieve their goal. For those whose holiday packages see them contained to the safely beaten track of the national parks, up-close sightings of beasts large and small can be the electrifying moments of a lifetime, but seeing all Big Five in limited time in these places is never assured. For those who’ve booked themselves into private game reserves, however, sightings can be more up-close, more productive in terms of animal sightings and are more likely to include coming upon those Big Five. In fact some private reserves even boast a money-back guarantee you will see their Big Five. Elephants abound irrespective, and it’s not unusual to be stopped on the road in a national park or private reserve by several score of these lumbering beasts that never appear to

be in any kind of a hurry. Buffalo sightings are also frequent, and eagle-eyed rangers and guides will invariably reward you with a good few rhino sightings, and a lion or three to rack-up the pulsethumping gasp-factor. Plus abundant giraffe, zebra, kudu, hippo, warthog and, well, you name it. South Africa’s Kruger National Park, alone has an extraordinary 851 species of mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish in its near two million hectares. But what of leopards? Leopards are the hardest to complete your Big Five slide-show, the more-so in national parks where tourist vehicles cannot venture off-road to access the deeper bush areas where these beasts prefer to seek shade by day to sleep off a previous night’s hunt. In fact we’ve a mate in the travel industry who says that in an astonishing near-20 visits to Kruger National Park, he’s never spotted all Big Five during two-day forays into the park. In the private reserves, however, it’s the operator’s land and they can do what they

like with it, bushwhacking their way off roads and tracks in their 4WDs in search of the most elusive of creatures – leopards included. On a visit to Southern Africa earlier this year we had three days in Kruger National Park followed by a couple in Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, and while we had sighted four of the Big Five in Kruger on numerous occasions, those elusive leopards had remained true to their reputation. But on a late afternoon’s game drive of our first day at Sabi Sabi we had sighted lion, elephant, buffalo and rhino within an hour of setting out from our lodge in an open Land Rover, and those four plus many more species several times over the next couple of hours as day-feeding animals began to settle for the night, and nocturnal predators started stirring for their hunts. And a 6am start next morning rewarded almost instantly again, with elephants and rhinos, giraffes, warthogs, wild dogs, buffalo and countless screeching birds sighted within virtually minutes of leaving the lodge… Sabi

Sabi is home to some 200 animal species indigenous to its area on the edge of Kruger National Park, and over 350 bird species. Our Game Ranger at the wheel and Tracker perched on the front of the Land Rover constantly chatted back and forth about tracks and sightings, and radio messages flooded in from other early morning vehicles of sightings and leads… including one that had our Ranger quickly gunning the Land Rover in the direction of deeper bush. And there we came across the last of our Big Five – a magnificent leopard sleeping in the morning shade of a thorn bush – we learned from another vehicle – having killed a fourmetre rock python the night before, devouring a third of it and leaving the remainder draped high over a branch of a nearby tree for us to marvel at. We’d achieved seeing our Big Five on one game drive less than 24 hours after arriving at Sabi Sabi. And as exciting as the remainder of that morning drive would be, sighting that leopard would be a certainly hard act to follow.

GIVEAWAY: FATHER’S DAY GIFT

en are notoriously difficult to buy gifts for, and it can be even more difficult when it is your dad, but luckily Westfield Penrith is here to help families pick the perfect present for Father’s Day. With September 1 looming on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to begin looking for presents for dad, afterall, a little thought now will prevent the mad rush on Sunday morning to the shops only to find all the good presents are gone! No one likes to receive hankies or socks, as much as dads will joke they don’t mind them, so if you want to really impress dad and put a smile on his face opt for a personalised gift that suits his needs and hobbies. Westfield Insider Alyce Cowell has helped to compile a shopping list jam-packed with awesome presents that are sure to please any dad. For the corporate-oriented business dad, you’ll want to buy a practical present that will help him get ready for the office, such as the Kikki.K Woolblend A4 Compendium ($49.95) or the Target De Longhi Dolce Gusto Coffee Machine ($229). If your dad is more the sporty type and enjoys

getting outdoors, then maybe he’d prefer some stylish accessories to look cool while working up a sweat – head to Sunglass Hut for trendy Ray-Ban Folding Wayfarers ($259.95). Young, hip fathers will be able to look stylish with a Cotton On Hi Ho Satchel ($29.95) and can entertain party guests with a Big W Keter Cool Bar ($68). For true blue Aussie dads who love to cook on the barbeque, a King of Knives Royal BBQ Branding Set ($49.95) is a fun gift, or you can appeal to his sweet tooth with a classic Darrell Lea Dad’s Bag ($25) from Australia Post. But be sure not to make dad do all the cooking on his special day, be sure to offer to manage the barbeque so he can put his feet up! Finally, if the father in your family loves video games more than the kids and has a youthful sense of wonder, then he’ll love playing Grand Theft Auto 5 ($109.95) or writing all his notes in a cute Beer Snob Hobby Notes notebook ($16.95) from Typo. But the best present of all is a sleep in on Sunday morning, followed by a big breakfast in bed and hugs from his kids, because afterall, Father’s Day is all about thanking dad for being simply who he is – your dad!

RAISING CUBBY By John Elder Robison

W

hile raising a child on the autism spectrum might be challenging at times, it is also a rewarding and special experience. John Elder Robison’s latest book Raising Cubby: A Father and Son’s Adventures with Asperger’s, Trains, Tractors and High Explosives recounts the trials and joys of a father and son living together with Asperger’s and helping each other cope in the world. The memoir focuses on John Robison, who was a misfit throughout childhood and finally got diagnosed with Asperger’s at the age of 40, a diagnosis that helped shed light on his unorthodox behaviour. As well as never being a model child, John also had an unusual attitude towards fatherhood, approaching it as a series of logic puzzles and practical jokes. He would jokingly tell his son Cubby that he was bought from the Kid Store after being told by a salesman that he would do all the chores and the father-son duo’s bedtime stories were electrical engineering manuals. Although his parenting was a little odd, John was a loving father who gave his son a life of fun and adventure – at the tender age of 10, Cubby had already driven a freight locomotive and run an antique Rolls Royce into a fence. The one thing John couldn’t figure out was what to do

when school authorities decided that Cubby was dumb and stubborn – the very same thing he had been told as a child. As he got older, Cubby’s teachers began to label him as a problem child, making John wonder if his son also had Asperger’s. The answer was unclear but as Cubby got older, his intelligence was shining through as he had become a brilliant chemist and made military-grade explosives that caught the attention of Federal agents. As Cubby faces a life-changing trial and could end up in prison, father and son must join together to fix their lives and accept that being on the autism spectrum is both a challenge and a blessing. There are plenty of enjoyable moments in this heartwarming and interesting novel: tender, suspenseful, and laugh-out-loud funny. This is more than just the story of an unapologetically eccentric dad raising his equally eccentric son. It’s the story of a father and son who grow up together. A positive review by ‘Booklist’ adequately sums up what readers should expect from this lovely book: “In many ways, this is a traditional father-and-son memoir, but the added element of Asperger’s gives the story a stronger emotional core... It’s a story of a man learning to be a parent, yes, but it’s also – and perhaps more importantly – the story of a man discovering, as an adult, who he really is”.

PENRITH IS READY FOR THE POLLS

P

enrith’s political animals were out for the evening on Tuesday to see Liberal candidate for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, debate current Member, David Bradbury ahead of the September 7 election. The debate, an initiative of the Western Weekender in partnership with Sky News, was hosted by the Penrith RSL and saw over 200 residents turn out for the event. Sky News political reporter, Laura Jayes, moderated the debate, which covered topics such as small business, education funding, the National Disability Insurance Scheme, immigration and the environment. An hour and a half long, the debate was well received by local audience members and those watching the live broadcast, with social media such as Facebook and Twitter very active over the following days. Weekender Editor, Troy Dodds, said the debate was an enormous success and gave local residents an unparalleled opportunity to learn more about their candidates ahead of the election.
