KASEY CHAMBERS: IT’S ALL IN THE FAMILY

03

Country music icon Kasey Chambers opens up to SHANNON COCHRANE about her recent divorce, tour and her music roots...

S

he may be an ARIA award-winning musician but you’re more likely to spot country crooner Kasey Chambers down at the schoolyard than on the red carpet. The celebrated singer-songwriter is one of Australia’s most popular country acts but has slowed down her career to embrace her role as mother to her children: 11-year-old Talon, five-year-old Arlo and one-year-old Poet. “I’m kind of just Tal and Arlo’s mum when I’m down at the school; no make-up, looking pretty daggy in my trackpants... obviously people would be aware that I’m a singer or whatever and sometimes we’ll do little fundraiser gigs and stuff like that for the school... but it’s never awkward or anything, so it’s good,” she said. But although Chambers is clearly proud of her brood, the issue of family is a sensitive one after an announcement earlier this year that the singer and her husband Shane Nicholson had separated. Unlike many celebrity break-ups, there are no dramatic fights or bitter feelings between the pair, who have remained close friends and still collaborate and play gigs together. “It’s great and I honestly mean that... we have remained really close friends, we’ve remained working together... obviously we co-parent and everything together and that’s just a given but even the things that we could choose not to do together, we still are,” she said. “We just kind of want to eliminate the hard stuff, which is the husband and wife stuff. So it’s been really nice and we’re like any normal people, we have our moments but overall I’m actually really proud of the way that it’s going

for both of us and we’re being grown ups about it.” Even with all the changes happening in her life, Chambers is still keeping busy touring and admits that she gets “itchy feet” when she stays homebound for too long. Chambers is embarking on what she jokingly calls the “Kasey and friends” tour, accompanied by her father Bill Chambers and up-and-coming country artists Ashleigh Dallas and Harry Hookey. Chambers said she was excited about the tour, which will drop by Penrith’s Evan Theatre on Sunday, June 23. “It’ll be fun, these are some of my favourite people that I’m getting to work with, it’s not just grabbing a bunch of guests and chucking them on a gig together, these are all people that I spend my time with socially and we jam together all the time and it’s really nice to get the chance to experience that with an audience watching too,” she said. Touring is a family affair for the Chambers clan, with Kasey and her father Bill playing on stage while her mum sells merchandise and her brother Nash handles the front-of-house sound. Traveling together is a long-standing tradition tracing back to when Chambers was a toddler and enjoyed a free-spirited childhood, living out of the back of her parents’ car as the close-knit family travelled the Nullarbor Plain. This unorthodox start to life introduced young Kasey to music, although it wasn’t until she was much older that she began to realise how special her upbringing was. “We would sit around the campfire and my Dad would get out the guitar and play songs

We just want to eliminate the hard stuff, the husband and wife stuff... to us and we’d all sing together... I thought it was really normal because I didn’t know any different,” she said. Despite her lack of expectations growing up, Chambers has crafted a successful music career for herself with her first five albums going platinum, and her second record ‘Barricades and Brickwalls’ becoming the best-selling Australian album of 2002 and scoring three ARIA awards. Unlike many country artists, Chambers has managed to break through to a mainstream audience with her acclaimed song ‘Not Pretty Enough’ reaching number 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart and receiving extensive airplay. Chambers chalks up the song’s success to timing, noting that it was a powerful

counterpoint to the sexualised music marketed to young girls at the time. “A lot of the stuff that was on the radio and was popular were artists; women who looked perfect and were beautifully skinny and had very sexualised songs... I just think that young girls related to feeling not pretty enough and feeling insecure and it came from a real place for me to write that song,” she said.

Kasey Chambers will play at the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Sunday, June 23 at 8pm. Tickets are $50. For bookings or more information, visit www.penrith. panthers.com.au.

BOOTLEGS BRING BACK THE SIXTIES

A

nyone who would have loved to see musical legends The Beatles at their prime has the chance to relive their classic music when the world’s premier Beatles tribute show comes to town. The Bootleg Beatles, who hail from the United Kingdom, will be bringing the spirit of the swinging sixties to Penrith when they perform at the Evan Theatre on Saturday, July 6. Formed from the members of the West End cast of Broadway musical ‘Beatlemania’, The Bootleg Beatles have become renowned for their accurate and lively stage show in tribute of Liverpool’s Fab Four. Throughout the band’s history, they have built up a reputation as the world’s best tribute to the Beatles and have played the main stage at Glastonbury, supported Oasis, performed live on the Graham Norton Show and even played for the Queen in Buckingham Palace. With each member of the Bootleg Beatles replicating the famous style, sound and

attitude of The Beatles, audiences are wowed by the similarities and authenticity of the show. Critics have been similarly impressed, with British music magazine New Musical Express writing: “The band are as similar to their namesakes as it is possible to be… unlike any other group in the last 15 years of rock, they can safely say they look and sound as the Beatles”. Even The Beatles former producer, George Martin, who has spent many hours collaborating with John, Paul, George and Ringo, was pleased with the show, saying: “I enjoyed their act enormously”. With their astounding musical talent, creativity and spirit, The Beatles defined their generation and inspired countless acts who followed them. They have such a long, illustrious discography that it would be difficult to choose their greatest songs, but audiences will definitely be able to enjoy ‘Nowhere Man’, ‘Penny Lane’, ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’, ‘Ticket

To Ride’, ‘Come Together’, ‘A Day In the Life’, ‘Here Comes the Sun’ and many more hits. The Bootleg Beatles will perform at the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Saturday,

July 6 at 8pm. Tickets are $47. For bookings or more information, call 4720 5555 or visit www. penrith.panthers.com.au.

‘Platters to Propera II’ will be held at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, June 26 at 11am. Tickets are $20 and include a morning tea,

to be served at 10am. For bookings or more information on the Morning Melodies series, call 4723 7600 or visit the website www.jspac. com.au.

VENTURE INTO THE LION’S DEN

T

ake a musical journey when The Lion’s Den return to Penrith to perform the variety extravaganza ‘Platters to Popera II’. Due to overwhelming demand, the group will perform at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre for their next Morning Melodies concert on Wednesday, June 26. The amazing concert will take audience members on a trip down memory lane as The Lion’s Den journeys through musical history, playing hits from the Doo-Wop era of the 1950’s through to perennial favourite Broadway blockbusters like Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera and many more. Hear three of the finest voices in the music industry, including the talented ‘popera’ tenor Daniel Mallari who unite together to perform a sensational morning of music that is bound to get the audience singing along and tapping their feet to the tunes. Originally from the Philippines, Mallari has performed a range of genres through out Asia,

the United States, and in the Pacific Rim. He lived in Hong Kong for seven years before deciding to relocate to Australia in 1997, and a year later represented the country in the USA after winning the ‘Fast Track to Fame National Talent Search’. There will also be an appearance by special guest artist, the multi-award winning musician Chris Gable. Gable, who has received a Mo and ACE Award in the past, has expertise and talent on the saxophone, clarinet and guitar that combines with his stunning vocals to make him a crowd favourite on the Morning Melodies circuit. Hailing from the Central Coast, Gable has been playing music since he was 10-years-old and is a seasoned performer who has been involved in an impressive variety of shows – from performing on cruise ships and working as a pianist and singer at Hayman Island to working in the Blues Brothers Show at Universal Studios Japan.

et the little ones ready because Penrith Symphony Orchestra’s popular annual concerts for children are making a comeback. The show, which has previously been a hit with kids and parents alike, will be on at Penrith’s Q Theatre on Sunday, June 23. Talented maestro George Ellis will lead children on a fun, musical treasure hunt through the beautiful sounds of live orchestral music, with a special surprise at the end. Held annually, these Pops for Tots performances are always lively, interactive events that make for a great family activity and a fabulous way to introduce young ones to live music. There will be educational entertainment available for all, with two performances tailored to different age ranges – the 11am concert is ideal for kids aged two to seven, while the 12.30pm performance is for children aged five to 12. The concerts are a part of a new

collaboration that gives music students from Penrith and the Blue Mountains the chance to gain the valuable experience of performing in an adult orchestra. “This year’s Pops for Tots are also a part of a larger educational outreach by the orchestra and the Joan Sutherland Centre,” said the orchestra’s president, David Cervi. “In addition to the Sunday performances, George Ellis and the orchestra are for the first time collaborating with the centre’s educational arm, the Penrith Conservatorium of Music, to present educational performances for students from disadvantaged schools in Western Sydney.” Kids will be able to listen to classical music, including two pieces of Russian dance music: the Ukrainian dance, Gopak, from Mussorgsky’s ballet ‘The Sorochinsky Fair’ and the Dance of the Montagues and the Capulets from Prokofiev’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The show will offer children the opportunity to be introduced to all sections of the

REVENGE WEARS PRADA: THE DEVIL RETURNS By Lauren Weisberger

I

n 2003, the world was introduced to the hard-hearted, couture clad Miranda Priestley in Lauren Weisberger’s novel The Devil Wears Prada. Three years later, Meryl Streep immortalised the fiendish magazine editor on the big screen. Now in 2013, Miranda is making a comeback in literary form in the new sequel Revenge Wears Prada. This time, the lovable protagonist Andy is back but now she’s just reached her thirties and is living it up as a successful magazine editor – a far cry from the first novel, in which she was a mere assistant to Runway editor Miranda Priestly and forced to live with the demands and whims of her diffi cult boss. Also making a reappearance is Andy’s former colleague and Runway survivor Emily; a woman who was once her rival and detractor but now serves as a best friend and close coworker. Readers will also be pleased to discover that Andy has some more big news: she’s getting married. Max Harrison, scion of a storied media family, is confident, successful, and drop-dead gorgeous. Their wedding will be splashed across all the society pages as their friends and family gather to toast the glowing couple. Andy is on top of the world. With her life finally on track, Andy seems to be leading a

fantasy life that differs markedly from the shaky start in the magazine world she had once upon a time. But after years of attempting to steer clear of her awful first boss Miranda, Andy’s luck is about to run out as her former foe, who has never been the type to lay low, is about to make a resurgence. Revenge Wears Prada was written by Lauren Weisberger, the author of the acclaimed novel The Devil Wears Prada, which spent over a year on the New York Times hardcover and paperback bestseller lists and was adapted into a successful film starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt. Like its predecessor, it’s bound to be a clever, witty and fast-paced insight into all the glamour and gossip that underlies glossy fashion magazines. And it remains to be seen whether the book sparks Hollywood interest again! FYI has two ‘Revenge Wears Prada’ prize packs to giveaway, including a copy of the book and a promotional bag. For your chance to win, email the code word ‘REVENGE’ to competitions@mediaview.com. au with your name and phone number. Entries close Wednesday, June 19. unnymen Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson star in this comedy flick as Billy and Nick, two hapless nice guys who make a living selling watches. That’s until the company they work for goes bust and they’re stuck jobless and contemplating their future. Waking up to the brave new digital era, the duo manage to wrangle themselves into an exclusive unpaid internship at megacompany Google. There, they stand out for being older than their intelligent, tech-savvy peers and have to show off their skills and compete against other interns for the chance to earn a coveted full-time position. Produced with some help from Google to get the culture of the company just right, ‘The Internship’ is a funny send up of life as an intern and the tech industry, with Vaughn and Wilson showing off their comedic talents as a backward, computer naïve pair. With so many dramas and romantic comedies out at the moment, ‘The Internship’ provides a refreshing change of pace.

The player is tasked with helping Diggs Nightcrawler, a bookworm private detective who lives in the land of Library City and gets thrown into a terrifying realm full of crime and deception from when the player enters his office. Diggs is scandalously framed for the murder of his best friend and boss and the player must assist him in clearing his name and tracking down the real killer behind the murder. his film is a thoroughly modern version of the classic fairytale ‘Hansel and Gretel’, except in this cinematic adaptation the two hapless siblings are transformed into fierce, witch-killing heroes. When they were children, Hansel and Gretel were abandoned in the forest and got kidnapped by an evil witch who lived in a gingerbread house but despite their youth, the clever duo manage to outsmart their captor and kill her. After their devastating experience, the brother and sister pair devote themselves to ridding society of evil witches and become famed throughout their community for their skills. They find it easy to counter the witches as, unlike other human beings, Hansel and Gretel are immune to spells and curses. They are set to meet their match when the particularly heinous powerful grand witch inflicts a spate of attacks on villagers. After discovering that the witches are preparing for a ritual where they will slaughter 12 children, Hansel and Gretel get into action in an attempt to stop the destruction.

wo mega-talented Aussie country musicians team up to take on the classics in their genre, with the result being one of the most exciting country music records released this year. Both Cassar-Daley and Harvey pitch in and sing staples of country with some songs being performed solo and others as duets. The idea for ‘The Great Country Songbook’ was spawned out of the musicians’ long standing friendship and joint concerts where fans would regularly ask them when they were going to produce an album together. Now they have finally decided to release an album, featuring some of the best known country tracks from personal influences on Cassar-Daley and Harvey including Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Hank Williams, Glen Campbell and the iconic Slim Dusty. Country music fans can expect to listen to the duo put their own unique slant on catchy songs such as ‘Behind Closed Doors’, ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today’, ‘Seven Spanish Angels’, ‘Mamas

Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys’ and ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’. The album ends on a high note for fans with its final song, a rousing medley of country gold: ‘Thank God I’m A Country Boy’, ‘On The Road Again’ and ‘Before the Next Teardrop Falls’.

KINGSTON AND CO

HONOURING A MATRIARCH’S 27 YEARS AT THE HELM by David Ellis

A

fter retiring from 27 years at the helm, Michelle Nugan can now invite friends to share a very special drop with her on the many big occasions that lay

ahead. Nugan Estate’s Chief Winemaker, Daren Owers has created an exceptional wine in her honour under the label Nugan Estate Matriarch McLaren Vale Shiraz 2006. Thrown into her role after the unexpected death of her husband Ken, who died within six weeks of being diagnosed with cancer in 1986, Michelle found she’d inherited a business that she says, at best, could be described as faltering. “I would like to recognise the support of my children Matthew and Tiffany during those early days as CEO,” she says. “But together with Daren Owers and his winemaking team, I believe Nugan Estate has gone on to become one of Australia’s great family success stories.” Daren’s drop created to honour Michelle is

a real cracker, and while in the top-shelf price range at $65 it is worth every cent: sourced from the family’s premium 11ha vineyard in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia, it’s a wonderfully rich and full-bodied Shiraz with an elegant and seductive palate of opulent dark fruits layered with dark chocolate and anise, silky tannins and well-integrated oak. One to note: The recently-released 2011 Angus the Bull Cabernet Sauvignon marks the end of an era – and the beginning of another. Created a decade ago by winemaker Hamish MacGowan and wife/business partner Brigitte purely for the enjoyment of having a good cut of prime beef accompanied by a great red, up until the 2011 it’s been blended from fruit from across South Eastern Australia: from the 2012 vintage it will be made from exclusively Central Victoria fruit. This will result in a more refined, elegant and less blockbuster Angus, but still a great partner with a great steak – and if it stays around $19.95, still great-value buying.

’ve often wandered by the newly opened Kingston and Co. and wondered why it always seems to be busy. After eating there, I now know what all the fuss is about – with friendly service and a sophisticated menu, this quaint little cafe is a welcome addition to Penrith’s dining options. Conveniently located in Penrith Westfield, Kingston and Co. is perfect if you’re looking for a quick coffee or a hearty, well-deserved meal after a long day of shopping. From the second you walk through the doors, you’re greeted by friendly staff and a warm ambience to match. The extensive menu is enough to satisfy even the most discerning of palates and offers a unique assortment of dishes that stand out against the usual cafe fare. Entrees put a twist on old classics, with choices ranging from chilli fried chicken wings served with coleslaw and salted cucumber to prawns on toast. Each dish can be purchased in one of two sizes, meaning that you’ll be able to get the perfect portion whether you’re on a date or with a large group. For me, the stand out starter was the grilled halloumi which came with sticky figs, lemon and grilled flat bread. The dish was perfectly cooked and the flavours complemented each other; the saltiness of the halloumi and the sweetness of

the figs were a match made in heaven. The entree was generous and wellpresented and the service was fabulous, with the plate coming out shortly after being ordered. After the tastiness of the starter, I had high expectations of what was to come and fortunately the mains didn’t disappoint. The fish of the day was fresh, line-caught rainbow trout which was tender – cooked to perfection – and came with fries and a side salad. Vegetarians can’t look past the halloumi burger, which is full of flavour with crispy cos lettuce, lemon aioli sauce and a sprig of mint. This delightfully clean, tasty dish was cutely presented on a wooden board with fries in an individual basket. There are also a range of scrumptious desserts including a tasty looking creme brulee and a creamy rice pudding, either of which can be enjoyed with one of the cafe’s coffees or smoothies. Kingston and Co. is located in Westfield Penrith on Riley Street. For bookings or information, call 4721 4354. - Reviewed by Shannon Cochrane Want your restaurant featured in FYI? is returning to television, this time as one of the hosts of Channel Ten’s new morning television show (yes, another one). The yet to be named panel show will air within the next few months with two more hosts to be announced very soon. Ten are giving it all they’ve got this time around after their last breakfast show didn’t even last a year. Not sure if Ita will be the saviour for Ten and turn viewers away from ‘Sunrise’ and ‘Today’ but can’t blame them for trying.

M

assive news came through late last week that ‘Bananas in Pyjamas’ could be on its way out after 21 years of dedicated service. Now the show hasn’t officially been axed but it’s been confirmed by the ABC that there will be no new episodes of the show for at least two years. Now, I’ll admit I no longer watch the show for obvious reasons, but I have many great childhood memories watching those “bananas coming down the stairs”. I should probably mention that the show is no longer live action but animated, which I believe took away the essence of the show. Legendary media personality Ita Buttrose

Popular Foxtel show ‘Wentworth’ has been renewed for a second season. The prison drama premiered last month to record ratings for an Australian subscription TV series, so it’s no surprise it will be back for another year. Another Aussie drama back for more is Nine’s ‘House Husbands’. The popular drama starring Gary Sweet and Julia Morris will return for a third season in 2014. The show has been achieving average ratings of late, last week it scored 848,000 viewers – not ideal but not too bad. American comedy ‘Eastbound and Down’ will end after its fourth season. It was set to end after three seasons but was resurrected. Season four premiers in the US in September and will air on Foxtel soon after. Channel Ten is set to air a ‘Biggest Loser’ special called ‘The Biggest Loser’s Biggest Ever Makeovers’. The two-night special is set to feature “favourite contestants from the past eight seasons of the show, and the makeovers

that changed their lives”. Can’t say I’ll be watching this one but it could be fascinating for fans to see if former contestants have kept the weight off or gone back to their old ways. I think they’ve milked this concept long enough. Lastly, for people that know me this would be no surprise but my favourite show this week is new A&E series ‘All Star Dealers’ (pictured). The history of sports holds

thousands of untold treasures, and Richie Russek is determined to find them all. With the help of his sons Michael and Darren and his company Grey Flannel Auctions, the group tracks down rare game-worn jerseys, vintage bats and forgotten trophies. To sports fanatics like themselves these items are priceless, and customers will pay anything in order to own a piece of history. Catch it Wednesday nights at 8.30pm on A&E.
