HIL MOSS WOULD SIT in his office at the Parramatta Eels, pondering why the club that should have been his biggest threat, the Penrith Panthers, just couldn’t get it right. Now, the man who spent 21 years in various positions at the Eels, is one of the key men responsible for turning around Penrith’s fortunes and making it the club he always envisioned it should be. Sitting high up in his stunning office overlooking Penrith Stadium, Moss is essentially Phil Gould’s right hand and mosttrusted man. Speaking exclusively with Extra Time, Moss said his role deals with the day-to-day aspects of the club, leaving Gould to take care of the “special projects”. “Gus focuses more on the special projects

like dealing with councils, local Governments and recruitment,” he said. “While Gus still is involved in some of the day-to-day things, he pretty much leaves it for me to run.” Coming up to his two-year anniversary at the Panthers, Moss joined the club at the very beginning of its biggest restructure and overhaul in its 45 year history. It’s been widely reported that before Gould and Moss took over, the Panthers club was in financial turmoil and on the field were a team in decline. Moss said he didn’t feel comfortable criticising the club’s previous regime. “Gus has said quite a few times about the financial position the club was in but I’m not going to criticise anybody because I didn’t know any of the people running the footy

side of things at that time,” he said. “For me I’ve been brought here to do a job and I think we’re well on the way to getting that done. “The place didn’t gel before – the Leagues Club didn’t talk with the footy club, that type of thing. But with thanks to Sue McNeill (Panthers’ Chief Operating Officer) we brought the whole thing back together and are part of one team now. It’s no longer an us versus them scenario.” But restoring the harmony in the club isn’t the only thing Moss has played a part in. Last year he was instrumental in luring major

Recently, one of those tough decisions was telling captain Kevin Kingston he was free to look for another club next year. “Kevin was never told we don’t want him here, out of respect for Kevin and the person that he is, we said that if he wanted to have a look around and see what else is out there, he is most welcome to do that, and then we’ll see where that takes us,” Moss said. “I knew Kevin from his Parramatta days and he’s a quality guy, and out of respect for him we’ve let him test the market and then we can talk after that.” Another challenge for Moss and Panthers

and we’ve got ours.” Another hot topic always on the agenda of every NRL club is the salary cap. Moss is the man in charge of Penrith’s salary cap – a complex beast in which he enjoys controlling. “It’s interesting, I actually quite enjoy it,” he revealed. “It’s a complex spreadsheet that you work with and you’ve got to be on the ball with what you’re doing and how you construct your contracts. “It’s not just worrying about 2013, you’ve got worry about how that’s going to affect

But with a couple of season defining wins already on the board plus some excellent new recruits to don the famous black jersey next season, Moss isn’t surprised that players from other clubs are keen to find out what the Panthers are about. “Penrith was never a club linked to anybody and now all of a sudden it seems everyone wants to come here,” he said. “We’ll take it as a compliment, we must be doing something right if everyone wants to come here now.” With stars like Jamie Soward, Elijah Taylor and Brent Kite already on Penrith’s books for

“The place didn’t gel before – the Leagues Club didn’t talk with the footy club... we brought the whole thing back together and are part of one team now” sponsors OAK and Asics to the club. “I was very happy about bringing on a company like OAK as our major sponsor, Asics as well,” Moss said. “The other part I’m happy about is the way the footy club functions now, it’s a fun place to be at and that’s how I like it. I like people coming into work enjoying themselves and I think you get the best out of people when it’s like that. We’re pretty laid back, it’s an open door policy, I’m not one of those blokes who keeps the door shut.” But as the club continues to grow and prosper, there will always be challenges and tough decisions to make along the way.

is dealing with low membership and crowd numbers as well as the continued threat of the GWS Giants and Western Sydney Wanderers. “I think team performance is always going to affect crowd numbers,” Moss said. “We’ve had a couple of good wins of late, so they’ll soon be coming back. We’ve also changed a few things at the stadium which has taken some time for people to adapt to but I think we’ll get there eventually. “In terms of the other codes, you’d be silly if you said you don’t worry about them but we can only control what we can control. They’ve obviously got their plans in mind

you in 2014, ‘15 and ‘16. It takes some work to keep it under control. “You’ve just got to be very mindful about how you go about constructing your contracts and you don’t leave yourself with any little surprises.” Such little surprises were amongst the problems that existed in the past and led to back-ended deals with players that put huge financial pressure on the club. Many will admit, including Moss, that Penrith still has a long way to go to becoming the best NRL club in Australia – something they hope to be over the next decade.

next season, the focus now is seeing who else Penrith can add to the mix as well as which off-contract players should they keep on for another year or more. “We have a recruitment and retention plan and we’ll just keep plotting away with that but we’re pretty happy with how the roster is shaping up for 2014,” Moss said. “We’ve just got to make sure we get it right. “Our focus is to make sure we develop our juniors into first graders and then it’s up to the right coaching and the right development, and hopefully they’ll want to stay here and be Panthers.” EXTRATIME | 3

The best we’ve ever had WITH PENRITH ENJOYING A BYE THIS WEEKEND, WE CHALLENGED JOURNALIST NATHAN TAYLOR TO NAME THE 10 BEST PLAYERS TO EVER WEAR A PANTHERS JERSEY. HERE’S WHAT HE CAME UP WITH...

T

HERE HAS BEEN 530 players play first grade for the Panthers throughout their 47 year history – from the very first player, Tony Brown, in 1967 right through to the most recent in James Roberts last weekend. In no particular order, it’s time for us to name the 10 best players to ever wear the brown, black, white, teal and even pink over the decades.

RHYS WESSER – 1998-2008 ‘Rhys Lighting’, as he was famously known, was Penrith’s greatest ever try-scorer. Wesser holds the record for most tries in a season with 25 in 2003 as well as most tries for the club with 113 from 177 games. He was the Ben Barba of his day, able to sniff out a try and turn a game. He had the best footwork, unbelievable speed and was a key figure in Penrith’s 2003 premiership campaign.

GREG ALEXANDER – 1984-1994, 1997-1999 ‘Brandy’ is perhaps the best known Panther of them all, and perhaps our best ever player. He had a great kicking game, great knowledge of the game, was a superb goalkicker, cool under pressure and knew how to find a tryline, scoring 101 tries in 227 games. Alexander moved to Auckland

for a few years mid-way during his career but that did nothing to diminish him as one of Penrith’s best.

CRAIG GOWER – 1996-2007 Penrith’s most recent premiership winning captain was tough, talented and could play multiple positions at the highest level. He played dummy half brilliantly when Alexander was in the side, then switched to halfback and was equally as good. Gower had a great passing game, great kicking game, great strength and was a good tackler too. Gower has played the second most number of games for the club with 238.

ROYCE SIMMONS – 1980-1991 Who can ever forget the fairytale Grand Final departure enjoyed by Royce Simmons? Legend has it that Simmons once trained on Christmas Day because he knew his rival at the time, Steve Walters, wouldn’t – he’d do anything to get an edge. Simmons, who later coached the Panthers, was very professional, very tough, and was a great leader and captain. He had a tremendous spirit.

MARK GEYER 1986-1992, 1998-2000 ‘MG’ was one of the original firebrands, no one was bigger than him in his day. Geyer

would inspire the Panthers with big strong runs and never took a backwards step to anyone, including Wally Lewis. He was one of the best and most feared forwards in the game and had an incredible one-handed pass. He is now Penrith’s number one ticket holder and a media personality.

JOHN CARTWRIGHT – 1985-1996 Cartwright was a Panthers legend and another brilliant club captain. Cartwright could offload in traffic 20 years before the stars of today were doing it. He didn’t have too many injuries which kept him on the field each week, playing 184 games. Cartwright was mostly a second-rower and was able to make great yardage each game. Not too many people could get past him either.

RYAN GIRDLER – 1993-2004 ‘Girds’ was Penrith’s best ever centre. He took a few years to get going but once he did he was unstoppable. Girdler had a beautiful flick pass and could kick goals better than anyone. He scored 101 tries in 204 games and is first all-time for most points for the club with 1572. Girdler could always get on the outside of his man and was just as good in Origin as he was at

club level. Known as the ‘intercept king’, Girdler took one of his famous intercepts in a finals match against Brisbane in 2003, which turned the game and helped Penrith continue their march towards a premiership. He retired in 2004, and now runs the very successful Girdler’s Grind coffee franchise. He’s also a commentator on Triple M.

BRAD FITTLER – 1989-1995 ‘Freddy’ came onto the scene as an enthusiastic teenager and was bursting with natural talent and ability. Fittler had the best left foot step anyone had ever seen and could play multiple positions well including centre, five-eighth and lock. Unfortunately, Fittler only played with the Panthers for seven seasons and was probably a better player when he left to join the Roosters, but he will forever be remembered as a Panthers junior.

STEVE CARTER – 1988-2001 Carter played more games for the Panthers than anyone else with 242 and was known as ‘the dog’ because he used to hound anybody with the ball. Carter had a good passing game and was always reliable. He set up his support players well and knew how to score a try. Carter had an unusual running style and spent most of his career at five-eighth.

TERRY GEARY – 1969-1976 Geary or ‘Dollar’ as he was often known, was Penrith’s toughest prop of the 1970’s and never took a backwards step during the club’s lean years. His career was hampered by terrible injuries but by the mid-70’s he’d become a crowd favourite with Penrith’s loyal fan-base. In 2008, he was name in Penrith’s ‘Team of the Century’.

PRIDDO’S POINT WITH LUKE PRIDDIS

Grant should have been picked 2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

W

E HAVE REACHED STATE of Origin time and I would have to say that it is extremely disappointing to not see Tim Grant’s name in the NSW squad. I don’t begrudge any player that has been selected but given how he has played over recent weeks and how he played for NSW last year, I think it is poor form from the selectors given they had spoken about showing loyalty and building a consistent squad as QLD have done. QLD’s squad is very familiar but the addition of an 18th and 19th man does show that they are thinking that change will be needed in the near future. They are ensuring more young guys are being given Origin camp experience as they

attempt to ensure their successful reign has the best chance of continuing. It was 2001 when I played Origin and playing at Brisbane I knew firsthand how my Brisbane team mates approached Origin and certainly believe it was true that Origin had a different meaning to QLD than it did to NSW. Not the actual game itself, as both sides always play their guts out for the win, but the mentality in which it was approached. These days I certainly believe that difference no longer exists and last year showed how far we have come. I don’t think QLD played well at all last year and that makes me think that maybe their great run is drawing to a close but that could also mean that we are still some way

off as they may actually fire this year making it all that much harder to get as close as we did last year. Game one is going to answer some questions on everyone’s lips but the result will then throw up others that need answering. Which camp they are directed at we will have to wait and see. Two games at ANZ Stadium may be a factor that makes the difference. It seems Penrith has turned the corner and could well be finals bound, but it is important to remember that a lot of pressure rests on some very young shoulders over the next 15 weeks. It’ll be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

OODEN SPOON FAVOURITES AT the start of the season, Penrith has roared into finals contention after shutting out the Dragons 19-0 at Kogarah Oval last weekend. The win moved the Panthers into the top eight for the first time since round two and secured the side its first away win of 2013. Keeping the Dragons scoreless also added to Penrith’s supreme defensive efforts over

the past month, with the side conceding a total of just three tries in their last three matches. Despite having an horrific injury toll, Penrith has stunned the rugby league world and could produce a fairytale back end to the season and reach the finals. Penrith have a bye this weekend, meaning they cant be shifted from the top eight and will go into the half-way point of the season at the right end of the table. Panthers coach Ivan Cleary said his side has showed enormous belief over the last month, but is not ready to declare the team a finals contender.

“Where you finish is where you deserve to finish, we are not worried about that at the moment,” he said. “I think our belief has gone up certainly to a new level over the last three weeks... obviously that is a good thing and that helps.” Skipper Kevin Kingston said “attitude and defence” was part of Penrith’s recent form revival, but like Clearly, was not getting ahead of himself. “We’ve fallen into the trap of getting too carried away with things before,” he said. “We’re a team that is working for each other and enjoying our football.”

Representative Club Person of the Year with SG Ball Trainer, Kevin McKinlay, taking out this inaugural award. Well done to all players and officials for a very good season. In other news, all clubs were advised that regradings were to be considered following one full round, however there has been a need to review a few teams earlier than this and these changes took effect last weekend. There are also a number of other teams, which are still being monitored. Just to finish, the players and staff of the Western Sydney Academy of Sport representative squads were acknowledged at their presentation night held at St Marys Leagues Club on Monday evening. I congratulate each and every one of them for their hardwork and dedication to rugby league in the Penrith community. I

WAS THE FIRST one to tell you that Kevin Kingston wasn’t wanted by Penrith next year, now I’ll be the first one to tell you the move is being reconsidered. I’m told that the professional way in which Kingston has handled being told to look elsewhere for next year has made some officials wonder whether or not such attitude and experience would be worth having around for another year. It’s true that Kingston does offer stability in a period of change, and he’s been a quiet yet strong achiever as captain. His form hasn’t been bad of late, either. It may all come down to what offers Kingston does end up with for the 2014 season – if nothing special arises, the Panthers may stop him moving to England. The Panthers have moved quickly to re-sign emerging fullback Matt Moylan. He’s just signed a new two-year deal and the St Clair Comets junior couldn’t be more happy. “Playing for the Panthers is a dream come true for me. Having been a local junior, I’m excited to be building my career at Penrith,” he said. “My goal is just to play well and do the boys and the club proud”. The worst kept secret at Penrith has been confirmed, with Luke Walsh granted a release to join St Helens next season. Walsh will play out the rest of the year with the Panthers, before heading to the Old Dart. Penrith has added even more depth by signing former Rabbitohs, Broncos and Titans player Luke Capewell for the rest of 2013, as well as the 2014 season. He debuted in the NRL way back in 2008 but has never quite broken through as a permanent first grader. Capewell played for the Windsor Wolves last weekend. I’m told Phil Gould is desperate to have the Jamie Soward / Peter Wallace halves combination at Penrith next year. Reports suggest that Gould has upped Penrith’s offer to Wallace to $500,000 per season, which will test his loyalty to Brisbane. Wallace, a Penrith junior who left the club after being stuck behind Craig Gower, is said to be seriously considering the offer. Josh Mansour returned from injury last

weekend, and was a late inclusion in the Windsor side that beat the Illawarra Cutters. Mansour scored the winning try but clearly needed the run in reserve grade – he was a little rusty and somewhat uncomfortable in the fullback position. Happening this Saturday, June 1, the Windsor Wolves will be hosting the ‘Back Your Wolf Pack’ event at the Windsor Sporting Complex when the Wolves take on the Wests Tigers in Round 12 of the NSW Cup at 4pm. Then after the game, join the team at the adjoining Windsor Leagues Club from 6pm, where you can meet and greet Wolves and Panthers players as well as win some terrific prizes including a signed and framed Windsor Wolves NSW Cup jersey, a signed Panthers training shirt, signed footballs, State of Origin tickets, grandstand tickets to the upcoming Panthers v Dragons clash at Penrith Stadium and some awesome Wolves merchandise. The only catch is you need to be at both the game and the club afterwards to be eligible. Entry to the game is free for Windsor Leagues and Panthers season ticket holders. Wes Naiqama scored one of the great tries that wasn’t last weekend. Playing for the Wolves, Naiqama dived over in the corner and clearly dropped the ball – but the referees pointed to the spot and awarded the try. A cheeky Naiqama admitted afterwards that he didn’t get the ball down. The Panthers have another new recruit in the ranks, but this time, it’s behind the scenes. With Media Manager Melissa Seiler heading off on maternity leave, Emma Duxbury will fill the role for the next year. Listeners to 2DayFM’s Kyle and Jackie O will know Emma as their morning newsreader. Panthers fans can take some solace from Johnathan Thurston’s comments this week that he had all but decided to join Penrith before family commitments forced him to stay in Townsville. In an open interview with Dean Ritchie in News Limited papers, Thurston said it was tough to tell Phil Gould he wasn’t coming to the Panthers. It is widely known that Thurston’s partner wanted to stay in Queensland.

THE FOOTY SHOW INSIDER

Secret tips to League of Their Own success EXCLUSIVE to Extra Time, our secret insider drops all the goss and information from behind the scenes of one of the most popular rugby league shows on television, Channel Nine’s ‘The Footy Show’

L

EAGUE OF THEIR OWN has reached full flight this year. From scintillating four-pointers to heroic try-savers and silky smooth trick shots, each hotly contested week is rife with home-grown talent. We know what you’re thinking, with so many videos coming in every week how am I supposed to win? Well, luckily for you ‘The Footy Show’ Insider has the scoop on the Do’s and Don’ts of League of Their Own. With the prize pool bigger than ever in 2013, these handy hints will help you get the judges talking. DO: Make the judges go WOW! With hundreds of entries flooding in each week your video needs to stand out from the pack. Only the biggest of hits, the most barnstorming run or intricate of trick-shots will have heads turning. Make it BIG! DON’T: Provide commentary. Just let

the play do the talking. The Big Marn is on hand at ‘The Footy Show’ to offer his expert calling, don’t plague your entry with screeching sideline announcing. DO: Entertain. The best players the game has ever seen are considered because they were entertaining. A mediocre effort can be turned into a highlight with a pertinent Post-Try Celebration. So lace up those dancing boots and get your moves on camera. DON’T: Put the judges to sleep. A length of the field try is a spectacle to be seen. But if it takes five minutes for your child to cross the paint, that video won’t be winning anything but a trip to the junk-mail folder. DO: Focus on production value. Hiring a cameraman and a specialist lighting technician will turn your home video into a piece on cinematic brilliance, vision so clean that our

judges will have no choice but to hand over the XBOX 360. However, if this isn’t plausible just turn that phone on its side and follow the action. DON’T: Stop. Keep sending through your videos. Be different, be funny and most of all be entertaining. The more unique entries you send in the higher your chance of taking home the bacon. Remember the entry details. There are two categories, Under 13s and 13s and over. Each week the winner from each category will take home the XBOX 360 prize and be in contention for the Grand Final Prize of $20,000. Now that you have the inside running, upload your entry at www. footyshow.com.au. Catch League Of Their Own on ‘The Footy Show’, Thursdays 8.30pm on Channel Nine. Big fans of Extra Time

I

T REMAINS A THURSDAY night institution for rugby league fans, and ‘The Footy Show’ is celebrating its 20th year in 2013. Host Paul Vautin, who has been with the show for all 20 seasons, showed his love for Extra Time whilst on set last week, as did reporter Erin Molan. Extra Time has a proud partnership with Channel Nine via ‘The Footy Show’, with the much-loved program the sponsor of our celebrity tipping competition. Also, each week ‘The Footy Show Insider’ delves into the behind the scenes fun of the show with an exclusive column, which appears here in Extra Time. We’d like to thank Fatty and Erin for their support of the magazine, and we wish them all the best for the rest of the year. ‘The Footy Show’ airs on Nine at 8.30pm Thursdays. EXTRATIME | 17
