PANTHER RUMBLINGS
with the Masked Panther
DOLLARS ROLL IN » Penrith’s sponsorship team is on the
verge of cracking $7 million in corporate support for the first time. It’s a great vote of confidence in Penrith from the business community both locally and nationally. In addition, corporate hospitality is sold out for 10 of the 11 games at Pepper Stadium this year, a sensational result given it wasn’t so long ago that the Panthers were struggling to reach anywhere near their corporate targets for facilities such as the Chairman’s Lounge.
» Phil Gould has urged fans to be patient
and has quashed talk of disharmony within the playing group at the Panthers. Gus took to the EVAN Theatre stage at Panthers Leagues Club on Monday night to address fans at a special Members Forum. While he copped a barrage of criticism from one fan in particular, most had a positive response to Gould’s words, which focused around the lack of experience within the playing group. Gould said the side was lacking confidence but would eventually turn things around. Panthers Chairman Dave O’Neill as well as head coach Anthony Griffin were also in attendance at the Forum, the latter deserving plenty of praise for showing up to an event he could have easily hidden away from given the side’s current form.
» Gould also used Monday night’s Forum
to address a nasty rumour that has been doing the rounds in recent weeks in relation to two players and a very personal issue. While well placed sources say the rumour is total rubbish, it simply won’t go away and keeps getting brought up quietly from various corners of the rugby league world. While not going into the specifics of the whisper, Gould said it simply wasn’t true. The two players at the centre of the rumour were seen together recently in pretty good spirits, so perhaps this is indeed a yarn with no substance.
» James Tamou played himself back into some form with a sensational performance for City last weekend, but his focus post-match certainly wasn’t on
rugby league. Tamou’s young son had to be taken to hospital in Mudgee after he started experiencing breathing difficulties while watching the game. Tamou left his representative team mates to celebrate while he rushed to be by his son’s side. It’s understood all is now good for the youngster in the health department, which is great news indeed.
» Spotted: Former Panthers CEO Corey
Payne celebrating his birthday with drinks at the Tilbury Hotel in Sydney last weekend. He’s obviously back from pursuing those overseas business opportunities.
» 57 junior rugby league players will be
making the big trek by bus from Narrandera in the Riverina region of New South Wales to Pepper Stadium on Saturday to watch the Panthers take on the Warriors. The players are from the Narrandera Lizards Junior Rugby League Club. The kids are extremely excited about the trip, and overnight accommodation is being looked after by Panthers through the ClubGRANTS program.
» Unable to crack it for a start in first
grade, I’m told Mitch Rein may end up heading elsewhere before the June 30 player transfer deadline expires. Don’t be surprised if he links up with the Newcastle Knights.
» Construction will begin next week on
the new retirement living development at Panthers, called The Royce. State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres will join Panthers Chairman Dave O’Neill and club legend Royce Simmons for the ground breaking ceremony on Tuesday morning. No word yet on if Roycie has secured an apartment in the new facility that bares his name. Phil Gould addressing Members on Monday night. Photo: Penrith Panthers
» Tyrone Peachey can expect a call not
long after full-time this Saturday from his father Martin, who will be putting in a request for his son’s Indigenous jersey. It’s always a proud moment for Martin to see his son sporting the Indigenous
kit during what is a special round for the Peachey family, and he loves holding on to the jerseys as a memento. Peachey is starting from the bench.

TROY DODDS @troydodds
N
obody likes to talk about mathematics as early as round 10 but the reality is that this Saturday afternoon’s clash with the New Zealand Warriors at Pepper Stadium is about as close to ‘do or die’ as it gets for the Penrith Panthers. With just two wins from their opening nine games, Penrith have to win at least 10 of their final 15 matches to play Finals football. It is a difficult, though not impossible task. You get the feeling that one win will restore some confidence and perhaps get the Panthers onto a bit of a roll. With a game against Newcastle, who
Penrith smashed 40-0 earlier this year, awaiting the side next week, Saturday’s game against the Warriors is the perfect time to start a run of victories. Penrith have had a huge break since their last game, having played Brisbane more than two weeks ago with the representative round breaking up the week-to-week schedule last weekend. Plenty of Panthers were on duty for various teams during the rep round and for some, it was an opportunity to play themselves into a bit of form. James Tamou was the obvious standout. His performance for City was exactly what we hoped him to deliver for Penrith and hopefully it’s given him the confidence to return back to clubland and put in his best performance in Panthers colours. In fact, all of those who played for City would surely have got something positive out of the experience given they secured
an impressive victory, while Leilani Latu looked like the proudest bloke on Earth when he crashed over for Tonga to give them victory over Fiji. The team named by Anthony Griffin on Tuesday to take on the Warriors retains some curious selections. Griffin seems to be sticking with Bryce Cartwright at fiveeighth, despite the availability of Te Maire Martin (he’s named in jumper 21 for this game) and the temptation to move captain Matt Moylan alongside Nathan Cleary. It seems odd to continue throwing Cartwright into the halves when it’s not his natural position and he’s not playing all that well there. Surely that’s not helping either Cleary or Cartwright, and certainly not Martin who is left to cool his heels in reserve grade. Then again, I’m not the coach (and thank God for that – I’ve got enough grey hairs already!). While the Warriors’ pack was once its

most feared asset, it’s the spine that really poses a danger to Penrith this weekend. If the Panthers concede the first try and go into their shell as they have done in previous weeks, there’s a big chance Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Kieran Foran, Shaun Johnson and Issac Luke will run riot. The Warriors are so hard to read and find consistency a difficult goal to achieve, but they would be happy with their last-up effort against the Roosters where they toughed out a 14-13 win. It is imperative that the Panthers get off to a good start. If they score first, they’re likely to settle and slowly build back their confidence and perhaps, in the space of 80 minutes, play themselves back into form. If they don’t, we may be getting out our calculators a lot sooner than we thought. Get out and support the boys – this one is important. Tip: Panthers by 10.

CRITICISM JUSTIFIED NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87
P
enrith Panthers prop Leilani Latu is determined to do whatever he can to stop the rot and believes recent fan criticism of the second-last placed team is more than justified. The 24-year-old big man, who returned to training on Tuesday after scoring two tries in Tonga’s win over Fiji last weekend, said the group is refreshed and ready to finally put an end to all the defeats. “We care about the losses, we just don’t want to play the victims and make any excuses whatsoever,” Latu said. “What the fans have been saying about us recently, it’s completely justified. All we can ever do is try, and play for Penrith, play for the Panthers and show the fans that we love them and we love playing for them.”
While Latu finally hit some good form playing for Tonga during the representative weekend, he admits his performances in 2017 have been awful, and he’s working closely with coach Anthony Griffin to improve. “I’ve been a bit disappointed with my form as of late and I’ve been speaking to the coach about that,” Latu admitted. “He’s just been reinforcing how important my role is within the team and I’m grateful that he sees the potential in me. “All I can ever do is put my best foot forward for the team and leave no regrets out there on the field.” Latu said he was encouraged by coach Griffin to play for Tonga on rep weekend to get some confidence back in his game. “Hook allowed me to play in that rep round,” Latu said “He said it would be good for me to play and maybe I could build some confidence from it – and I believe I have.” Unfortunately, Latu isn’t the only Penrith

Latu said while making the Finals will be an incredibly tough uphill battle, he and the rest of his teammates aren’t giving up. “I’ve heard a lot of critics in the media say teams that lose five in a row can’t get
back into the top eight but, from where I’ve come from, anything is possible,” he said. “From my upbringing I’ve seen impossible things happen and I’m sure the other boys have as well. “We are still keeping an open mind. We are just really focused on the group and the unity in the group.”

ON THE SAME PAGE NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87
P
anthers forward Reagan Campbell-Gillard has assured fans that his teammates are all on the same page as they prepare for this Saturday’s do or die clash against the New Zealand Warriors. Penrith are currently staring down the barrel of a sixth straight loss and one that could end their season prematurely, if they can’t overcome an improving Warriors side. Speaking with the media on Tuesday, Campbell-Gillard said despite it being a long five weeks, everyone had returned from last weekend’s representative round fit and firing. “We had three or four days off and the boys are looking really fresh and ready to rip in,” he said. “It’s been a really long five weeks but the boys have a lot of confidence still and the spirit around the club is very good.” After Penrith lost their fifth game in a row prior to the rep round, questions were
raised regarding the side’s confidence in both attack and defence. Campbell-Gillard believes that’s all been sorted in the recent break and everyone is finally working as one. “We were a little bit off in attack and defence and leaking really soft tries but we have addressed that,” he said. “Everyone is on the same page right now and we can’t wait for Saturday to repay the fans and all of our loyal members who show up each week to support us.” The 23-year-old forward missed playing in last weekend’s successful representative round after being ruled out of the City Origin team due to niggling injuries. While Campbell-Gillard admitted City coach Brad Fittler was disappointed he couldn’t play, he had to put himself and the Panthers club first. “I let Hook tell Freddy the story of what was going on with me, he was a bit disappointed but I come first and so do the Panthers,” he said. “I just had a toe injury, a hip and a wrist injury. Just things I’ve had surgery on in the past are coming back to give me some issues but everything should be sweet.” Penrith’s high profile forward pack has

Stats reveal James Tamou, Trent Merrin, Leilani Latu and Campbell-Gillard haven’t been playing to their potential this year – one of the reasons for Penrith’s slow start.
“We’re trying our best each week but it’s very hard to feed off each other’s confidence when we aren’t winning,” Campbell-Gillard said. “It’s very tough at the moment but once we start getting on a roll and start playing basic footy, our footy will do the talking.”

Dragons, Sea Eagles and Sharks have been the surprise packets
JAMIE SOWARD
W
e are 10 rounds into the 2017 NRL season this weekend and I thought for this week’s column, I’d take a look at the season so far and list my top three teams that have surprised me so far this year as well as my top three disappointments. My top three teams that have surprised me the most so far this season: St George-Illawarra Dragons The Dragons are playing a real hardnosed brand of footy and they’re not taking any prisoners. Even though they were off the pace against Melbourne before the rep round, they got themselves back into that game and gave themselves something to build on. However, I think their talent and depth will be tested in the coming weeks with captain Gareth Widdop still sidelined plus fullback Josh Dugan also now injured. Manly Sea Eagles Manly’s performances this season really make you wonder where they are going to finish after the 26 rounds. While they’ve put in some real stinkers at home, they’ve
been able to come together on the road and win some really big games, like the one in North Queensland back in Round 3. Consistency is the key for this team going forward. Cronulla Sharks Going back to back is really tough but the Sharks have been a bit like Manly this year. While they haven’t done much at home, on the road they’ve been able to go into some tough environments, play their brand of footy and get some really good wins, which currently sees them in third on the ladder. Origin time could be a challenge. My top three teams that have disappointed me the most so far this season: Penrith Panthers Pre-season hype is a big thing to live up to but sometimes it can really take hold of you. Even if you say you are not reading into the hype, it just becomes an expectation from everyone around the club that things are going to happen and sometimes they don’t. This Saturday’s clash against the Warriors is a do or die game in regards to Penrith’s top eight chances.
New Zealand Warriors The Kiwi spine should be doing a lot better but they are just not getting the support every week from everyone. It’s very frustrating. While Kieran Foran is improving the Warriors, they still have some stuff to work out because they should definitely be in the top eight right now. Canberra Raiders The Raiders have had some mixed form to start the year and I don’t think they

understand what kind of footy that they need to play to be able to get those tough wins. I watched them against the Bulldogs the other week and that was a game that they should have had in the bag but they never really looked like getting out of first gear and they got beat. That’s something they’ll have to address if they want to push for a premiership this year. Agree or disagree? Let me know on Twitter via @sowwowofficial6.

Pacific Tests on the verge of rivalling State of Origin
Matt russell
R
ugby league’s Pacific Tests can be as big as State of Origin. It’s the only conclusion to draw, such has been the development in events staged at Penrith, the Gold Coast, Parramatta and now Campbelltown. Well before Papua New Guinea kicked off against the Cook Islands, long lines of fans queued outside the gates. By the end of England’s win against Samoa, more than 18,000 had created an atmosphere reminiscent of Suncorp on Origin night. It seemed more like 36,000. The vibrating sea of red when Tonga scored late to beat Fiji showed there is genuine passion for this concept. That, and the empty racks in the merchandise tents. Penrith’s Leilani Latu stood crying as his team lined up to enter the field. Suliasi Vunivalu wept as Fiji sung their Noqu Masu. The vigour in Manu Vatuvei’s play on debut for Tonga – at 31 and after 28 internationals for New Zealand – indicated what it meant for him to acknowledge his parents’ heritage. For the players this is about family, faith
and footy. It’s fun and friendly all week but ferocious come kick-off. The contact in some of the tackles would do any State Of Origin game proud. The 48 metre penalty goal from PNG five-eighth Ase Boas – complete with two-step run up – iced the Kumuls’ win while also summing up the highlights seen across all three games. Already you can tick three important boxes. People. Passion. Performance. The next television deal retains the Pacific Tests and it is an exciting 2018-22 window! Looser international eligibility rules are already helping. Fijian great Petero Civoniceva rated it the strongest Fijian Test team he’s seen. Next we need greater pay parity. More publicity and promotion will help. The rest of us have to look past the break in the club competition, the possibility for injuries and any other negatives. This is an exciting, new frontier for rugby league – a beacon to burn negative headlines. The Pacific Tests are the next State of Origin. Watch every NRL game live, commercial free, on Fox League – only on Foxtel.

FAREWELL TO A FAVE How we covered the story TROY DODDS @troydodds
T
he front page of the Western Weekender on July 13, 2012 said it all: “Lewis walks out”. One of the biggest rugby league stories of the year, Penrith junior Luke Lewis announced his time at the Panthers was coming to a premature end. “Penrith Panthers General Manager, Phil Gould, now faces his two greatest challenges – rebuilding Penrith without Luke Lewis and regaining the faith of a shattered fan base,” the Weekender’s Nathan Taylor reported. “Gould sensationally agreed to release 28-year-old Lewis from the final two years of his contract on Monday. It came after the State of Origin star forward
season, as well as the Clive Churchill Medal, to go with his 2003 title. Fans were up in arms over Lewis’ departure back in 2012. “I can’t believe they would let go Luke Lewis, it’s a silly decision. Penrith have lost a lot of good players over the years that they should have kept. They are going to have no one left soon,” supporter Warren Upton told the Weekender. Exactly what happened behind the scenes, eventually leading Lewis to leave, is a mystery but there was plenty of speculation at the time, including that he had fallen out with then Panthers coach Ivan Cleary. In the end, the decision proved positive for Lewis. Not only did he win a premiership, but he played some of his best football for Cronulla. He currently remains at the Sharks, now towards the end of what has been a long NRL career.
made the Panthers aware he was unhappy – he wanted a new challenge and he wanted out of the re-building franchise.” Lewis admitted it was during the Origin period that he realised he needed a change in his life and a fresh start away from Penrith. “I had a long think about things and it probably hit me during Origin II and all I wanted to focus on was my football and trying to enjoy it,” he said. “The plan was when I got out of Origin camp that I’d have a talk to my manager and the Penrith club. I wanted to make sure there was no hard feelings between the club and I and that hopefully we can just part ways and still be on good terms.” Lewis would later join the Cronulla Sharks and while the Shire-based club would itself go through plenty of problems, he would ultimately be rewarded with a second premiership in the 2016

MANSOUR WITHIN WEEKS OF RETURN This is the sight that will have Penrith Panthers fans breathing a sigh of relief. Josh Mansour was all smiles at training on Tuesday, resuming contact work and now within weeks of his NRL comeback. There’s speculation that Mansour could return against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium in round 13. Mansour tore his anterior cruciate ligament on Kangaroos duty last year, ruling him out for almost half the NRL season. Teammate Reagan Campbell-Gillard said Mansour can’t wait to return to the field. “He’s been with us for a couple of weeks now and just trying to build his confidence up around the team. He’s been itching to get on the field lately,” he said. “It’s been tough for him, staying indoors not around our teammates. He’s looking really good at the moment. He’s still got a couple more weeks away from training but he’s flying.”
