TIM GRANT SHOULD BE BACK THIS WEEKEND PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

PREVIEW BY TROY DODDS

Season goes on the line A

S LUCK WOULD HAVE it, this weekend’s game against St GeorgeIllawarra could give Penrith the second chance they needed this season. After dropping their bundle against the Tigers earlier this month, it seemed that the dream of reaching the top eight may have run its course, particularly when the side went down to Canberra the following week at a chilly Canberra Stadium. But as long as the Rabbitohs do what is expected and beat Canberra on Friday night,

one of them will definitely go to 16 points, two clear of where Penrith currently sits. Conversely, one will remain on 14, and it’s a nice buffer for the Panthers if they get victory over the Dragons. The Panthers have already beaten the Dragons once this season – an impressive 19-0 victory at Kogarah – but much has changed since then. On the Dragons side of the fence, they’ve started to look more towards the future with Jamie Soward having packed his bags and

Plum, Adam Docker and Mose Masoe have provided plenty of grunt for the Panthers in Grant’s absence, there’s little doubt that the side has missed the former NSW prop’s goforward and fitness, particularly in the first 20 minutes of games. The Dragons’ season is teetering on the edge of collapse, so don’t expect them to take this game lightly, nor their opportunity to get one back on the Panthers following the loss earlier in the year. The Dragons are, however, a team playing

In front of their home fans, Penrith have a chance to re-earn the faith of those who turned out in big numbers to watch them against the Tigers. I’m told, from within the camp, that confidence internally is still high. That’s sometimes not the case at this time of year – many squads switch off, knowing it’s not going to happen this year. They start to miss that odd tackle, or not scramble for that loose ball. It’s not happening at Penrith, but it could well start to creep into their play if

This weekend, Penrith faces Josh Dugan for the third time this season. Dugan played for Canberra in round one, and for the Dragons in the round 11 match at Kogarah Oval Penrith can return to the top eight simply by beating the Dragons on Saturday. I use the word ‘simply’ very, very lightly. It’ll be a tough task, particularly with Penrith’s growing injury crisis, which has now claimed impressive back rower Sika Manu for the next six weeks at least and Josh Mansour for an extended period. This game has added importance when you consider that Brisbane and the Warriors play each other this weekend, meaning

headed off to England, where he’ll play the remainder of the season before joining the Panthers for 2014. Penrith are in a totally different mindset – last time they met St George Illawarra, they were coming off their hammering of the Warriors and their tough, gritty win over Melbourne. This time around, they face the Dragons on the back of two losses. A big boost for the Panthers is the likely return of prop Tim Grant. Whilst Nigel

with very little confidence – and it wouldn’t have been helped by their narrow loss to the Cowboys in their last game a fortnight ago. To win, the Panthers must capitalise on the Dragons’ poor form and confidence and shut them out of the game early. Unlike what happened against the Tigers, they must force the knife in deeper when they have the Dragons close to dead and buried – and not allow even the slightest chance of a comeback.

they don’t get a confidence-building win this weekend. There’s definitely something to be said for the disruptions caused by so many injuries and the ongoing second tier salary cap saga, which again has Matt Moylan in limbo, but Penrith needs to put that to one side, brush themselves off, and believe in the 17 players that take the field on Saturday night. Make no mistake – this is the most important game of the season so far. EXTRATIME | 3

KEVIN NAIQAMA SCORES A TRY FOR NEWCASTLE PHOTO: RENEE MCKAY/ACTION PHOTOGRAPHICS

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

It’ll be the Wes and Kev show WES NAIQAMA SAYS HE’S EXCITED ABOUT THE PROSPECT OF HIS YOUNGER BROTHER KEVIN JOINING THE CLUB NEXT SEASON, DECLARING HE’S READY TO MAKE AN IMPACT ON THE NRL...

T

HERE WILL BE ANOTHER member of the Naiqama family joining Penrith’s exciting roster next season – the faster, younger Kevin Naiqama. Last week the 24-year-old younger brother of Panthers back Wes Naiqama signed with the club from the Knights on a two year deal beginning in 2014. Speaking with Extra Time, Wes said it was a great move by Kevin and the Panthers to

join forces next season. “I’m pretty stoked for him… he’s been behind a couple of good players at Newcastle so he’s looking for a fresh start and wants to go to a club where he can push for a first grade spot,” he said. “There’s a huge opportunity for him at Penrith to go further in this career and he’s just as happy as I am.” Kevin debuted for the Knights against the

Storm in round 26 of the 2010 season. In his short NRL career he’s become one of the games most electrifying players, scoring nine tries in just 12 first grade appearances. Unfortunately for Kevin he’s been stuck behind some of Newcastle’s best players including Darius Boyd, James McManus and Akuila Uate, which has forced him to play most of his football in the NSW Cup. “Kevin’s very quick across the ground, that’s probably his best asset: his speed and agility,” Wes said. “He’s developed into a real good player over the last couple of years under Wayne Bennett.”

While both brothers are two of the fastest players in the competition, Wes admits that Kevin has the edge in the Naiqama household. “Kevin’s always been the quickest… I think he’s got the club record at Newcastle over 40 metres, so he’s got me covered there,” Wes said. Panthers General Manager of Rugby League, Phil Moss, is excited by Kevin’s arrival at Penrith. “Kevin is a great acquisition for Penrith. His speed and versatility on the field will add depth to our roster, and he will no doubt become a crowd pleaser,” he said.

PRIDDO’S POINT WITH LUKE PRIDDIS

The rugby league merry-go-round 2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

T

HIS WEEK SHOULD HAVE been the opportunity for fans to have seen new 2014 recruit Jamie Soward in action up against the Panthers but he is now heading to the UK for the remainder of the season given his departure from the Dragons. While the end of his time at the Dragons was not ideal, Panthers fans should hold steady with the hope that escaping the pressure of the NRL for the next 3-4 months will allow him to re-establish his confidence and assess any personal issues that may have contributed to his decline in form. If he is able to do this it could mean that he kicks off his time at the foot of the Mountains with the form of 2010 in which he helped the Dragons to a premiership title.

Could it be that Benji Marshall (pictured) will soon be the next high profile player to leave his current club given the issues surrounding his contract at the Tigers? While there was obviously some agreement to upgrade his current contract when the new TV deal was completed, to then demand an extension given he still has two years to run on his current contract seems a bit much for me. Given his form of late has been nowhere near his best, I believe Benji could actually be seeking a way out of Tiger town. It would not surprise me if he ended up in rugby unless he reduces his current asking price as it would be hard for another NRL club to justify that amount if he does leave.

Priddo’s Point proudly supported by Heartland Penrith

Back on the Dragons, they have just signed former Penrith prospect Harry Siejka for the remainder of the season. Given their current issues in the halves department and the injury to new signing Gareth Widdop on Monday night, Harry may well have the opportunity he has been seeking for the remainder of the year to cement a starting role in first grade if his attitude and performances warrant this. Penrith fans have all seen the talent that he possesses but he was never able to cement a position at Penrith even with their issues in the halves so this may be Harry’s time to finally live up to his potential that had him earmarked as a future star at a young age.

CAMERON CIRALDO IN ACTION PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

Ciraldo: Attitude is the key I

T MAY BE A famous move coined by WWE superstar wrestler John Cena, but the Panthers will need to have their own ‘attitude adjustment’ if they are to beat the Dragons this Saturday night. Penrith have had a horror run over the past few weeks – not only have they lost two straight games but they’ve been crippled with an ever-growing injury list that threatens to derail their Finals push.

Panthers forward Cameron Ciraldo believes his side needs to find the same attitude and determination that saw them win three straight games if they are any chance against the Dragons. “Any team you play in the competition, if you don’t turn up with the right attitude you’re not going to win games,” he said. Despite losing a few key players in their loss to the Raiders including Sika Manu and

Josh Mansour, the Panthers will be boosted by the likely return of prop Tim Grant and exciting outside back James Roberts for the all-important clash. “All you can do every week is control the things that are in your control,” Ciraldo said of Penrith’s game plan going into the match. “If we defend well and hold the ball, we’ll give ourselves a good chance of winning.” The Panthers last played the Dragons only a month ago on May 25, that night Penrith won their third straight game after shutting out the ‘Red V’ 19-0. Penrith’s defence was unstoppable that evening at Kogarah but since then they’ve

had two byes and two losses and are a team desperate to get back on the field and start winning again. “We really need to improve our defence, we spoke a lot about that last week,” Ciraldo said. “If we can limit the amount of tries they score and do what we do in attack, hopefully we’ll get the win. But it all comes back to defence. “The Dragons have always had a strong and experienced forward pack plus Josh Dugan’s added a bit of spark to them as well. The way we control him and their goforward will be the key in beating them.”

PENRITH’S UNDER 20’S SIDE WILL BE LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK INTO FORM WHEN THEY TAKE ON THE STRUGGLING DRAGONS AT PENRITH STADIUM THIS SATURDAY...

P

ENRITH PANTHERS HOLDEN CUP coach David Tangata-Toa believes his young side have the goods to bounce back against the St George-Illawarra Dragons this Saturday evening. Last week the Panthers enjoyed a muchneeded bye after a heavy defeat to the competition leading Canberra Raiders the week before. Tangata-Toa said he got a good gauge of where his side needs to be if they are to challenge for a title in September. “The Raiders have been the most consistent team in the competition and are definitely the benchmark,” he said. “We probably came up a little bit short against them. At half time it was 12-all and I thought we were a good chance of getting the result, but we were poor straight after half time, and in that first five minutes the Raiders blew us away and that was the end of it.” It’s no secret that over the course of the opening 14 rounds, Penrith’s NYC side has been getting weaker and weaker each week due to an ever-growing injury toll and the

promotion of some players to the NSW Cup. “The boys we’ve lost are quality players but in saying that the boys that have come in have done a really good job for us,” TangataToa said. “It’s a bit of a learning curve for them, they’re maybe not used to playing high consistent football week in, week out and it’s been a good test for them. “Some of them maybe weren’t at their best against Canberra but they’ll get another opportunity this week to play well and keep their spot in the team.” One area that Penrith have struggled in, despite blooding some real potential stars, is their halves. Promising youngsters Sam Scarlett and Toby Evans are just two of Penrith’s best halves options sitting on the sideline with injury. “I don’t think we’ve gone back to back games with the same halves pairing all year,” Tangata-Toa revealed. The second-placed Panthers take on the 11th-placed Dragons at Penrith Stadium this Saturday evening. Kickoff is at 5.15pm.

NIGEL PLUM IS STAYING AT PENRITH PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

Plum: I almost walked away N

EWLY RE-SIGNED PANTHER NIGEL Plum was just hours away from leaving the club to move to England, he’s revealed to Extra Time. The popular prop was so close to joining English Super League club Hull KR that he and his wife were looking at homes in the north of England. “A couple of weeks ago on a Monday morning I was all set to go to England but by

that afternoon we were staying here,” Plum said. “My wife and I convinced ourselves that we were off to England and we were looking at places over there. I was talking to a few players at the club asking them about the area and what it was like living over there.” Had Plum gone to Hull KR as expected he would’ve joined some very familiar faces including former Panther Travis Burns.

Plum said Penrith was always his first preference, largely due to a certain milestone he hopes to reach by the end of his career. “It’s a long way off but the opportunity to play 100 first grade games for Penrith was something I’ve always wanted to do, and to be given that opportunity to do so was hard to knock back,” the 30-year-old said. “I’m currently at 50 games, so I’m halfway there. It’s still a long way off but that did play a part in the decision to stay here as opposed to giving up the opportunity to live in another country and experience another world.” Plum said the decision not to go to

England was a tough one because he knows he’ll never get another opportunity to play rugby league overseas again. “We knew our chance to go to England was this contract or not at all pretty much,” he said. “In a couple of years time my daughter will be starting school, so we didn’t really want to be heading there after this next contract. “It was a tough decision to not go to England because of the opportunity it presents itself living over there but I think the number one factor for me was the chance to play 100 games for Penrith, which is what I want to do.”

THIS WEEKEND’S NRL SCHEDULE

ULL CREDIT TO PANTHERS players Nathan Smith and Jeremy Latimore, who took part in a fun Red Nose Day photo for the Weekender this week (pictured below, see story on page three of this week’s paper). Both players were more than happy to help out for a good cause, and give up their time. Nathan Smith is off contract this year and any club picking him up would certainly not go wrong given both his work rate on the field and his likable personality off it.

Expect to see Cameron Ciraldo in a Roosters jumper next year. Ciraldo doesn’t know what his plans are for next season yet, but I’m told that he’s close to signing a deal with the Roosters for one or two seasons. Those up in Newcastle are not happy that Kevin Naiqama has signed with the Panthers. So much so that The Newcastle Herald ran a back page story this past week, with the big headline ‘Penny Pinchers’. How good is it to see the Panthers upsetting other clubs with their recruitment drive? The future of Travis Robinson at the Panthers may well be known by the time you’re reading this. There was very, very strong speculation this week that Robinson would join his twin brother Reece in the nation’s capital this week in an immediate

LUKE PRIDDIS

transfer. The deal needs to be done by June 30. Is the NRL kidding when it comes to its release this week about not changing the salary cap rules mid-season? Suddenly, the league is all high and mighty about midseason rule changes, yet has notoriously changed rules during the season in the past. Even this year, it introduced new rules surrounding line drop-outs and scrums half-way through the year! The NRL said on Monday that it is developing terms for a complete review of the NRL Salary Cap for 2014 and beyond. “A meeting of the Club Salary Cap Committee, which includes four NRL clubs, last week reaffirmed that the current Cap system warrants an extensive review but unanimously agreed that it was not appropriate to change the present rules this season, given that all clubs have finalised their squads on the basis of the current rules,” an NRL statement said. That means that Matt Moylan may again be forced to play reserve grade this year, and may be stuck there if there’s no injuries to players in his position in the top squad. It’ll be interesting to see rugby league on another TV network later this year, with Channel Seven securing the free-to-air rights to the Rugby League World Cup.

Winter is the best time to exercise

W

hen winter hits, most people just want to bundle up, stay inside with a cup of hot tea, close the curtains and wait for spring. Who wants to go through the painstaking process of bundling up to go outside to get exercise? While dressing for winter can often be a workout in itself, it isn’t enough to stay healthy over the winter months. And, even if you manage to keep a healthy diet over the winter, it isn’t enough to maintain your overall health. Exercise needs to be a part of your lifestyle, no matter what time of year it is. Not only does working out burn fat, build muscle strength, increase metabolism and keep our hearts healthy- it also helps us to fight off many diseases and illnesses. There are many studies which have been done indicating that exercise helps us to increase our immune systems, which is so important during the winter months. In fact, just maintaining regular, moderate exercise can offer us protection against colds and flu. A recent study of 50 women, who walked faithfully 5 days a week, showed that they suffered half as many colds as ones who had no exercise at all. Their immune systems were healthier, indicating more virus and bacteria- fighting cells.

The team at Fitness First Penrith understands that it is hard to get motivated in winter- which is why every new member receives three free training sessions with a qualified trainer when they join, free fitness workshops run on a daily basis, and free Small Group Training also run by qualified trainers. More to keep you motivated. The club also features a café, crèche, freestyle training area, as well as three group fitness studios hosting famous Les Mills classes and signature programs. With twelve qualified personal trainers calling the club home, Fitness First Penrith can also help design specifically tailored programs for you. Every member receives a free re-program every six weeks which can be booked at reception. Visit the club for a free trial. Just because winter has set in, you don’t have to put your active lifestyle on hold. Find a friend to join a gym with you, and you can spend the winter getting out, having fun and getting much needed exercise to keep yourself healthy and happy. Fitness First Penrith is located at The Trade Centre, Mulgoa Rd (next to Super Amart). For more information please contact the club on 4702 2201.

JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE WITH YVONNE PURTELL

Rain still causing problems YVONNE Purtell is the manager of the Penrith and Districtt Junior Rugby League, nurturing our young footy talent

W

E HAVE A GREAT line-up of footy happening during the school holidays with our U13 and U14 merit squad players together with players from our COLTS and JETS programs. The Under 13 and Under 14 merit teams will play in the Bulldogs’ Gala Challenge at Smith Park on Thursday, July 4 and the COLTS will play an U15s Country team at The Kingsway kicking off at 2pm. St Marys Leagues Stadium will play host on Wednesday, July 10 to Panthers v Western Suburbs development games. U13s kick off at 5pm; U14s kick off at 6pm; U15s kick off at 7pm and the U17s kick off at 8pm. The gates will be open so come down and watch a great night of football! The junior league would like to congratulate all of their players who have been selected in school representative teams. Great effort boys, good luck with your upcoming games. We have seen some inclement weather over the past week, which we understand is disruptive to

training programs for our junior league teams but a reminder, before using the grounds in wet weather check with your club secretary to ensure they are open for training. None of us like the rain but unfortunately it does mean that fields get closed and training nights and match days are disrupted. Unfortunately it’s just a part of junior sport but hopefully we have a much clearer weekend ahead. Only a few more weeks of competition then we move into the finals. Following the grand finals there will be a Western Sydney Challenge which will see the grand final winners of U7s through to A grade from Penrith play against the grand final winners from Parramatta. The two districts have been working on ensuring this will be a great event and is scheduled for the weekend of September 21 and 22. We would really like to see this as an annual event on our calendar. Good luck to all teams this weekend... enjoy your footy!
