or the first time this season, the tip at the end of this column will be for the opposition rather than the Penrith Panthers. That’s not to say I don’t have faith in the boys, particularly after Monday night’s brave 35-34 win over the Broncos. But the circumstances that will lead in to Saturday afternoon’s clash with last year’s premiers all seem to work against the Panthers and if they come away from Allianz Stadium with a victory, it will be one of the best the club has produced all
year – no matter how it comes. The first challenge facing the Panthers on Saturday is the short turnaround after playing on Monday night. And Monday night’s game was no easy contest – the Panthers, down to one player on the bench at one stage, were out on their feet in the final 15 minutes and the recovery from such a bruising encounter will be extremely tough for Ivan Cleary to manage. He admitted as much in the post-match press conference on Monday, saying he wasn’t sure how the side would cope with the turnaround. Teams backing up from Monday nights are invariably a little worse for wear the following week and unfortunately, the Panthers face a double whammy with the Roosters having the bye last weekend. They’ve had 14 days since they last took the field and with the Origin period now over, they surely would have used the break to re-focus on the run home as they attempt to defend their title. To make matters worse, during those two weeks the Roosters would have thought about little else than redeeming themselves after giving up a 24-0 lead to
be beaten by lowly Cronulla a fortnight ago. It was an embarrassing performance and coach Trent Robinson won’t stand for a repeat effort. Also ensuring Penrith face an uphill battle this Saturday is yet further disruption in the halves. Coach Cleary will use his third combination in as many weeks after Tyrone Peachey left the field on Monday night with a torn pectoral muscle injury that has most likely ruled him out for the remainder of the 2014 season. Monday night’s game was the third straight encounter in which Cleary has been forced to make mid-match changes to his halves pairing – the fact that the side has won two of those matches deserves to be applauded. With so many factors working against Penrith heading into this game, just a competitive showing should be enough to make fans happy. As long as Cleary and the squad can take something out of the game, they’ll be well placed to defeat the Sharks in Bathurst next weekend. But if Penrith are to surprise the Roosters, where will the win come from? There’s no doubt that the answer lies in Jamie Soward and Matt Moylan, who were
simply brilliant on Monday night against the Broncos. Both are without doubt the top contenders for Penrith’s player of the year award at season’s end, and both have gone about silencing their critics, particularly in the last fortnight. Soward relished the opportunity to skipper the side last weekend while Moylan clearly hasn’t heard of the term ‘second year syndrome’. The only problem in Soward’s game is his defence and the Broncos certainly sent plenty of attack his way on Monday night. I’d expect the Roosters to do the same on Saturday, with Sonny Bill Williams likely to find himself running at the Soward and Jamal Idris defensive combination more than once during the game. That’s why Penrith’s defence must be particularly solid during this game – keeping the Roosters out of the danger area and well entrenched in their own half should be part of the game plan. There’s no doubt this will be tough, but the Panthers have proven more than once this season that they can rise above adversity – perhaps, just perhaps they’ll do it again on Saturday. Tip: Roosters by 4.

Peachey expected to miss remainder of 2014 He has been one of the most exciting revelations at Penrith this season but Tyrone Peachey’s year looks to have come to a premature end. The 2014 recruit, who came to the Panthers from Cronulla, suffered a torn pectoral muscle during the first half of Monday night’s clash with Brisbane.
He is expected to miss the rest of the 2014 season. Peachey had been playing his first game in the number six jumper, replacing Peter Wallace in the halves. “Peach doesn’t look too good,” Cleary said in the post-match media conference following Monday’s game.
“It’s not good news.” Cleary confirmed that Isaac John was not an option of making a shock return, but it’s understood Peter Wallace will be back within the next four weeks, allowing the Panthers to reunite their top halves combination for the final weeks ahead of the finals.

grow. The 27-year-old arrived at the Panthers as a second-rower last season after six years and one premiership at the Melbourne Storm. However, after prop Nigel Plum was a late withdrawal before Penrith’s big win over the Tigers a fortnight ago, Manu was asked to fill-in for the ex-Raider in the front row. Speaking with Extra Time, the former New Zealand international said conversations have occurred between himself and coach Ivan Cleary about the possibility of switching positions on a more permanent basis. “Ivan’s spoken to me about it. I’ve spent a few years in the backrow now and I’m getting older and slower,” Manu admitted. “He put me in the front row on the weekend (Round 17 vs Tigers) and I really enjoyed it. I had the ball in my hands a lot more and I was involved a lot more.” It’s fair to say Manu is yet to find his groove this season as he continues to recover from major off-season shoulder surgery. He admits his recovery time is taking longer than he anticipated.

Catch Erin on ‘The Footy Show’ every Thursday night at 8.30pm on Channel Nine
‘The Footy Show’ went up to Newcastle on Thursday night to kickstart the Alex McKinnon ‘Rise For Alex’ Round, happening this weekend. In an exclusive interview, I sat down with Alex himself along with Knights coach Wayne Bennett and players Korbin Sims and Darius Boyd. I thought I knew as a journalist from reading articles that I understood the impact this accident had on the club – I had absolutely no idea. I don’t think anyone has any idea how tight this group are and how much they re-live this tragedy every single day. We might think about Alex once or twice a week or see a photo of him at a game and think that’s a really horrible situation and we hope he does well, but these guys are living it 24/7. During the interview, Wayne Bennett broke down in tears speaking about how he feels this burden because he sent Alex out to play that night against the Storm. Wayne even talks about the fact it made him reassess what he was doing and question things he never questioned. Wayne said he couldn’t look at the replay again because he just knew. He was hoping and praying for the best but he just knew. Alex McKinnon also wanted Darius Boyd to speak in this story because he hates how badly Darius is being portrayed in the media. Alex is best mates with Darius and Darius spoke from his heart. I saw another side to Darius Boyd that people would be blown away by. I’ve done this job for 10 years and I’ve never been more moved from a story.

Bursitis – Inflammation of the bursa
Friday 18 July 2014 the western weekender
Bursitis is the inflammation or irritation of the bursa. The bursa is a cushioning sac filled with lubricating fluid which is designed to protect our muscles and tendons. Bursitis is predominantly caused by overuse or repetitive movements such as computer work, sports such as tennis and golf, and cycling. It most commonly affects the elbow, shoulder, hip, knee and ankle. Pain is the most common symptom together with a decreased range of movement. A great treatment option is the combination of chiropractic and laser therapy.

The Panthers certainly stood up in a nail bitter against the Broncos on Monday night especially with the absence of Peter Wallace and the injuries to several players that were sustained. They face another solid test against the reigning premiers this week and while judgement is still out as to whether they are serious contenders for the title they are starting to earn a move towards that status. The performances of Matt Moylan in recent weeks, watching his footwork being able to stop, step and accelerate, reminds me of a little guy we had back in 2003 called Presto. He too was able to create something out of nothing and someone possessing these qualities is certainly going to be needed should the Panthers make it to the big games at the pointy end of the season. Moving on and several times fans have been injured out on the field in so called ‘match day entertainment’ and given Monday night’s episode, I hope the Big Ball and other such activities are shelved full-time. Regardless of whether they sign waivers or not they shouldn’t be out there. If organisers are that hard up for entertainment why not put together a panel to discuss the game and show it on the big screens incorporating interviews from the players during the week. Given the time available, I am sure the players with media skills would easily be able to do this one day early on in the week. Finally, Wayne Bennett has come out and again deflected the performance of his team in a time of crisis by accepting the blame for them not playing and achieving up to his high standards. This he has done on many occasions throughout his coaching career. While I believe that Bennett is a big part of what has held that club together this year, some could take this as a sign he has given up on his players, or is there another reason not mentioned but certainly being talked about by the general public?

Big ball, big problems

Send your Panthers gossip at news@westernweekender.com.au
Penrith officials remain confident that the ‘death of suburban grounds’ won’t have a huge impact on them, with hopes strong that the State Government will give the green light to a new major stadium in the area. Penrith certainly has the inside running – Stuart Ayres is both the local MP and Sports Minister, while the Panthers’ bid will come from powerhouse figures Warren Wilson and
NATHAN TAYLOR
Talking of stadiums, don’t be surprised if Penrith trials moving a match to ANZ Stadium next year. I’m told there’s rumblings at Panthers HQ about moving a game to the Homebush-based venue to not only grab the lucrative cash on offer, but test the waters in terms of a crowd figure. It’d most likely be a match against Parramatta or the Tigers that is moved.
Phil Gould. While most media want to talk about Parramatta as the most likely candidate, I’m told that it’s really down to Penrith and Liverpool. Parramatta presents significant issues including potentially being a waste of money given ANZ Stadium is just a short drive down the road, and has a lack of parking. Liverpool is also attractive particularly
The Penrith Panthers NSW Cup team have stretched their competition lead to four points after posting their 11th straight win of the season last Saturday afternoon at Sportingbet Stadium. It was a hard fought battle for the home side with Newtown putting up a strong fight right to the very end.
It seems the folks over at The Sydney Morning Herald are a forgetful bunch. In an article on Monday, they talked up the fact that the Panthers could this year break a 23-year drought and win the minor premiership for the first time since 1991. Only problem is that Penrith in fact won the minor premiership 11 years ago – in 2003. The younger generation are basically glued to their phones (not like Masked Panther, who still has a Nokia 3210) so Ivan Cleary has taken to texting players their match ratings each week. The risky move seems to be paying off for Cleary, who is definitely not afraid to push the boundaries. We’re told that Cleary is yet to hand out a 10/10 to any player. For anyone who missed out on a Rise For Alex wristband, they’re still on sale at the Penrith Panthers shop inside the Leagues Club. They’ll also be on sale at Allianz Stadium on Saturday ahead of the big clash between the Roosters and Panthers.

A new Panthers jersey that is green in colour is currently on sale at the Panthers shop. It’s actually not going to be worn at any stage, but will be used during promotional activities in the leadup to the side’s game in Bathurst next weekend. The crowd figure of around 12,500 on Monday night was particularly impressive. It was in fact the third highest Monday night football crowd of the season. Well done, Penrith!

PANTHER RUMBLINGS
The half-time entertainment on Monday night turned into a story all of its own after two Panthers fans were injured during the ‘big ball bash’. The ‘big ball bash’ has been a fixture at Penrith Stadium for many years with no real problems, until now. The most seriously injured was a long-time Panthers fan known on Twitter as @shunter86. He suffered an awful looking ankle injury and was due to have surgery on Tuesday at Nepean Hospital. We’re tipping that the ‘big ball bash’ may not make another appearance at Sportingbet Stadium this year.

Andy Saunders The Jets got on the board first in the opening five minutes before Matt Robinson and Kieran Moss played a huge role in Tom Humble getting Penrith’s first points of the afternoon. Robinson was then pivotal in Penrith’s second try of the day, putting in a nice grubber kick for Will Smith to score in the corner. A try to Luke Capewell, Moss and Newtown to end the half, saw the Panthers lead 22-10 at the break. Humble opened the scoring for Penrith in the second half to get his second try before the Jets scored a double themselves to get within six points of the Panthers with under 10 minutes to go. However, a try to Eto Nabuli and a third for Humble scared off the visitors giving Penrith a 36-20 win. Meanwhile in the Holden Cup, Penrith got back to business after a couple of weeks of losses to post 50 points against the ladder-leading Broncos. The Panthers were down 12-10 to Brisbane at half-time but turned it on in the second half to win 50-18.

JUNIORS @penrith_juniors
Congratulations St Marys on winning the 2014 McDonald’s Garton Group Relay last Monday before the Panthers vs Broncos game at Sportingbet Stadium. A special thanks to Kathryn Garton who was on hand to present the medallions to the winning team. Sport, no matter what code, is presented with the same challenges. One in particular is the Jekyll and Hyde effect on adults. Adults have a tendency to change personality at kids’ games and they can quickly lose perspective. The pressure and behaviours of some adults then ruins the game for the kids. When we talk about adults we talk about team officials, coaches and trainers, together with parents. We, as adults, need to encourage kids’ involvement and participation and their ongoing efforts in a game. We also need to provide them with a positive environment to train and play. Remember: “Nature decrees that children should be children before they become adults. If we try to alter this natural order, they will reach adulthood prematurely, but with neither substance nor strength.” – Jean-Jacques Rousseau. We talk about grassroots, the young players who are starting and coming through the game to achieve their goals, whatever they may be. Let’s look at this from another angle; respecting the roots of the game. What do I mean by this… R is for Rules – respect for the rules of the game. O is for Opposition – respect for our opposition, without them we don’t have a game. O is for Officials – it is important to respect officials. T is for Teammates – being with your teammates should be fun. S is for Self – we need to respect ourselves.

He scored 40 tries during that time, a pretty impressive record. We’re not sure how much a Kevin Dann card would have been worth on the playground, but we’d certainly like to have one in our collection!

ike all rugby league clubs, the Penrith Panthers have at times found themselves at the centre of controversy involving players off the field. Whilst he will forever be remembered in glowing terms thanks to his efforts in captaining the Panthers to premiership success in 2003, Craig Gower unfortunately found himself at the centre of controversy more than once during his time with the Panthers. Before a ball was even kicked in 2006, Gower was dramatically stripped of the captaincy and fined $30,000 after the Board investigated complaints about his behaviour while attending a charity golf tournament the previous December. Tony Puletua was handed the captaincy for the 2006 season. At first, Gower was angry by the club’s punishment – he threatened to quit, but ultimately stayed on. However, in some ways, the damage had already been done and it seemed a sour relationship between the number seven and the club would most likely be maintained until his eventual departure. Just a year later, Gower would find himself at the centre of more controversy, this time over his loyalty to Penrith and a drama-charged radio stoush with 2GB’s Ray Hadley. In June of 2007, with rumours circulating about Gower potentially seeking a release from the Panthers, the following interview took place between Hadley and Gower on the 2GB Continuous Call Team. Hadley: “Are you seeking a release?” Gower: “I have not, I have not sought a release.” Hadley: “And you won’t be?” Gower: “No, I won’t be. I’m with the club. I have committed to the club.” Just days later, Gower was granted a release by the Panthers, confirming his departure at the end of the 2007 season to join French rugby. “We have reluctantly agreed in principle to Craig’s request because we believe that under the circumstances it is in his best interests to have a change,” said Panthers general manager Michael Leary. “Our decision was based on the great service that

Craig has given our club.” Hadley went on air and called Gower a liar over the initial interview. “Based on that, it is au revoir to Craig. I don’t want any more contact with him,” Hadley said. Gower tried to contact Hadley off air to discuss the circumstances surrounding his departure, and used other media outlets to get his message across. In the end, Craig Gower will be remembered for all the right reasons – that 2003 premiership included. Unfortunately, like many star players, there’s a few black marks on the record as well.
