MOSE MASOE RETURNS THIS WEEKEND PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

PREVIEW BY TROY DODDS

Feel like chicken tonight? T

O PUT IT IN the simplest way possible, the Panthers have run out of puff in season 2013. An ongoing injury crisis has finally caught up with the side and it would appear that playing finals football can now be ruled out. Unless, of course, Penrith can somehow spring an almighty upset and beat the highly favoured Sydney Roosters at Penrith Stadium on Friday night. If they were to do that, then all of a sudden, their season has new life – and it

plan to that of Penrith’s which is to build long-term success. It will most likely bring a premiership trophy or at least a grand final appearance to Bondi much quicker than Penrith, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right way to do things. On Friday the Roosters will be without rampaging second-rower Sonny Bill Williams (suspension), but when you look through the rest of the Roosters’ line-up, it’s hard to say they’ll miss him all that much. The Roosters side spells class with a

A full-strength Melbourne simply didn’t know what had hit them when Penrith came out with an incredible defensive display; one that would lay the foundation for a run of three straight wins. During that period, Penrith were exceptionally physical and they must have that attitude again to be any chance against the Roosters. “It will be a very dominant, physical game and we’ve just got to be switched on, ready to play,” said hard-hitting lock Adam Docker.

If Penrith make the finals from where they currently sit, they will certainly deserve it as it will most likely mean they’ve beaten the Roosters, Canterbury and Manly in the run home – there could be no tougher assignment. Mose Masoe returns to the Penrith side this weekend following his one-week suspension, adding some grunt to the forwards. At this time of the year, with so much on the line, one wants to remain confident

This marks Penrith’s first Friday night game of the season, and the first time that Michael Jennings has played at Penrith Stadium since joining the Roosters earlier this year wouldn’t be the first time that such new life has been breathed into their 2013 campaign. On paper though it is one of Penrith’s toughest tasks of the season. The Roosters are sitting in second position on the ladder, coming off tremendous wins over Cronulla and the Knights and are still a realistic shot at the minor premiership. They bought perfectly this season, strengthening every single position they had a problem with in recent years, an alternate

capital C and we should not hide away from that fact. But if rugby league was played on paper, games would turn out very differently every weekend. The Panthers must go back to a Sunday night back in May, when they produced one of the upsets of the season to beat Melbourne, if they are to find a similar contest in which they had their backs against the wall, and were rated no hope of winning.

“We were nowhere near as dominant on the weekend as we had been the last three or four games and that’s what really kills us.” Docker agrees that Penrith’s injury crisis has finally caught up with them and is causing grief at the wrong end of the season. “We’ve had that many injured players it just plays with your head,” he said. “You’ve got new people coming in, it changes up the whole technique about how you play the game.”

and upbeat, but it’s hard to see the Roosters getting beaten on Friday night. That said, if Penrith plays with heart and commitment, and gets a little bit of luck (something they’ve had none of in their past two games) then the impossible could very quickly turn into the possible. A good start, as always, is needed, but more importantly, surviving the 10 minutes before and after half time could prove absolutely crucial. EXTRATIME | 3

10 years since our Panthers A DECADE SINCE PENRITH DOWNED THE SYDNEY ROOSTERS TO WIN THE 2003 GRAND FINAL, TROY DODDS LOOKS BACK ON A VICTORY THAT CHANGED LIVES AND MOVED THE COMMUNITY...

M

AGICAL. INCREDIBLE. UNEXPECTED. It’s hard to find a single word that adequately sums up the remarkable efforts of Penrith’s 2003 side, which went from $67 premiership outsiders to climb the summit and grab rugby league’s greatest prize on the first Sunday in October. As the club celebrates the 10-year anniversary of their second premiership at tonight’s game against the Roosters – the side who they beat 18-6 on that day – memories are flooding back for local fans, who erupted in celebration when Luke Rooney scored the match-sealing try close to full-time. That moment – when Rooney dived over after Luke Priddis surprised everyone by firing the ball out wide instead of sending it back for Craig Gower to have a shot at field goal – was one of the greatest in Penrith’s proud history in top grade football. It was up there with Royce Simmons’ farewell two-try effort in 1991. And it was just as important, too. After a decade where finals football was a rarity and the Panthers club was struggling for recognition and success in the wake of the Super League war, success in 2003 couldn’t have come at a more crucial time. The success of the 2003 side came on the back of an incredible batch of juniors who, it seemed, all came through at exactly the right time, creating a recipe for success that any of the world’s sporting codes would be envious of. But at the start of the 2003 season,

thoughts of a finals appearance, let alone winning a premiership, were the furthest thing from the minds of Penrith’s players and supporters. The Panthers suffered an embarrassing start to the season – losing to Brisbane in round one before being thumped by Melbourne in round two. But on Sunday, March 30, something special happened that would change Penrith’s season. Down 10-4 at half time, the Panthers fought hard against defending premiers the Roosters, and a late Craig Gower field goal gave the side an unlikely 23-22 win at Aussie Stadium. What is easily forgotten, however, is that whilst that win is remembered as one that turned around the side’s season, the Panthers were actually thumped by Canberra at Penrith Stadium the following week. It meant that the future premiers had lost three of their opening four matches. In truth, it was in round six against South Sydney when things really turned around. I remember, abandoned by my mates, sitting in the rain at Aussie Stadium. It was a dour game, but when Trent Waterhouse crashed over to give Penrith a 16-14 victory, there was a sense of relief. What nobody else knew, however, was that before that victory, coach John Lang had grouped the side together after giving them a few days off. The side promised to each other that they’d forget the first month of the competition and would give things a real shake from that moment on. And what a shake it was.

JOHN LANG EMBRACES A TRAINER

From there, the highlights just kept coming. A club-record eight wins in a row from round six to 13. Three home crowd records – 22,147 against the Bulldogs in round 16, 22,227 against the Roosters in round 20 and then 22,304 against the Eels in round 26 The debut of players like Frank Pritchard, and the emergence of stars like Joel Clinton, Luke Lewis, Luke Rooney, Trent Waterhouse and a host of others. It took a while for the fans, the bookies and the general rugby league world to realise it, but something special was building at the

foot of the Mountains. After winning the minor premiership and following it up with big wins over Brisbane and the Warriors in the finals, the Panthers still incredibly walked onto Telstra Stadium for the Grand Final as outsiders. Somebody, however, forgot to tell Luke Priddis – who produced the game of his life, setting up two tries and scoring another. And somebody forgot to tell Scott Sattler, too, who produced a try-saving tackle that will go down in history as one of the greatest ever Grand Final moments. When Sattler made that heroic cover tackle on Todd Byrne, it was clear that it was

going to be Penrith’s night. The euphoria that surrounded the victory was indescribable. Whether it was the incredible scenes of emotion on the field immediately after the game, or the wild celebrations back at the leagues club afterwards, Penrith became party central. Tonight, the region remembers and reflects on one of its greatest moments. Sport, as it so often does, captured the spirit and imagination of the community. In the years that have followed the 2003 premiership success, the memories, the players and the moments slowly faded away.

Ryan Girlder retired at the end of 2004, coach John Lang was sacked at the end of the 2006 season, grand final winning captain Craig Gower walked out in 2007, and slowly, one by one, the players from that tremendous season either retired, found other NRL clubs or headed to England. Every now and again, memories are awoken – you’ll see Tony Puletua score a try over in England, or of course, see a player like Craig Gower return to Australia for one final shot at NRL glory. Proving that everyone loves a winner, the fans have slowly walked away, too, and the days of 20,000+ crowds at Penrith Stadium

have – for now at least – disappeared. Winning comes in cycles, however, and the loyal bunch that continue to support Penrith through thick and thin will again be rewarded one day, even though they’ll be difficult to spot amongst the bandwagon jumpers who return to shout for their team. The odds may be against Penrith to beat the Roosters tonight, but reading about and watching the 2003 season and triumph should provide enough inspiration for this current crop of stars to in the very least try their guts out. One day, after all, it may be them being swept up in the euphoria of Grand Final success.

The 2003 Grand Final side: Where are they now? 1. Rhys Wesser: Retired from the NRL at the end of 2011 after switching to Souths 2. CLINT NEWTON IS LEAVING THE PANTHERS PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

Clint puts in for Panthers HE’S ON THE HUNT FOR A NEW CLUB BUT FORWARD CLINT NEWTON HAS ONE JOB TO DO AT PENRITH FIRST: HELP THE CLUB THROUGH ITS HORROR INJURY TOLL AND TRY TO SNEAK INTO THE TOP EIGHT...

P

ENRITH FAN FAVOURITE AND all-round nice guy, Clint Newton, has revealed he won’t be at the Panthers next year but is committed to helping the club through its worst injury crisis in years. Speaking with Extra Time, the 32-year-old admitted Penrith’s injury crisis is a concern but a concern that’s out of their control. “You just have to control the controllables,” Newton said.

“You can obviously reduce the risk of muscle injuries but when you’re getting impact injuries like we’re getting that’s just part and parcel of the game, and you’ve just got to get on with it. “There’s no point in crying about it. Clubs go through it from time to time. We are all professional players and you’ve just got to make sure you step onto the field in the best possible shape.”

Newton knows how crucial the next month will be as the Panthers battle for a spot in the finals. “I think we are still in a good position,” Newton declared. “We are in a bit of a dog fight [for a spot] in the bottom part of the eight but that’s the way it is. If we deserve to be in the Finals, we’ll be there.” Meanwhile, Newton has confirmed he will be playing at another NRL club next year after being told by Panthers management he won’t be re-signed. However, the veteran second-rower hasn’t ruled out playing in reserve grade next year if

he can’t find a place in a first grade team. “I won’t be here next year but my form will dictate where I play,” Newton said. “If you think you’re above playing first grade maybe you should hang them (boots) up. I don’t believe in the saying ‘finishing on top’, I never quite understood it. “You look at Nathan Hindmarsh last year, he was involved in a wooden spoon team, would you class that as finishing on top? Probably not, but at the same time he contributed so much to the game and can walk about knowing he’s given everything.” Newton said he’s still got the passion and drive to train and play.

PRIDDO’S POINT WITH LUKE PRIDDIS

An amazing experience 2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

I

JOE GALUVAO AND PAUL WHATUIRA

T HAS BEEN 10 years since a wet Grand Final evening in 2003 that saw Penrith score its second premiership so given this week’s opponents I thought I would reflect on that game. The week was one of great excitement given our side was full of young players with only myself having previously won a Grand Final and once we attended the breakfast on the Thursday, I had a sense that we were going to handle the pressure as our side was so relaxed while the Roosters players seemed highly strung. The day of the game was a bit of a blur as I had a sick wife with a new four-week-old baby and spent the morning trying to do my best to help out with our other three kids

as well. The game was one that was made for a battle of the forwards and it certainly was that. There were some great moments before and during the game starting with the roar of the crowd as they showed us in the sheds getting ready on the big screens, Luke Rooney scoring twice and “that tackle” which is still playing on Scott Sattler’s DVD player regularly after all these years. As it is being worn out he has moved it to weekly viewing instead of daily. If I had a dollar for everyone that has told me they won money tipping me for the Clive Churchill Medal I would have a sizable piggy bank for the kids. Back at the club afterwards was amazing with people hanging from the ceiling and I

don’t think that there has been a moment since that has forced the doors to be closed and people locked out of the club. I started crowd surfing in the EVAN Theatre then watched Girds do the same only to be stripped of almost everything he had on that he couldn’t hold on to! While the celebrations over the week were great for me the memories of what I saw on that field after the siren were personally gratifying as I just felt a sense of relief that we had won and I had done what I had personally set out to do by using my previous experience to lead from the front. Watching the Langs embrace as father and son was special. It was an amazing night.

OME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS of the 2003 premiership which took place on that Sunday in October are as follows: The back three Luke Lewis, Luke Rooney and Rhys Wesser were simply outstanding and when a kick was put through by the opposition you could always rely on one of the three to field the kick successfully and bring the ball back upfield. The two tries by Luke Rooney were gems with him supporting the ball carrier the way he did and finishing off with two great winger’s tries. The famous tackle by Scott Sattler soon after the start of the second half will never be forgotten and will forever be grand final history. Luke Priddis setting up two and scoring one himself and winning the Clive Churchill Medal. Tony Puletua, Craig Gower, Ryan Girdler and Rhys Wesser from that team became

members of Panthers Team of Legends. - Coach John Lang in his raincoat finishing his stellar rugby league career with the biggest prize of all, a premiership. - Walking around the oval in the rain with the players after the game in my suit sopping wet. It didn’t matter. - I remember seeing Brad Fittler’s face. He was ashen and could not believe they had lost the game. We shook hands. He was a great sport. - Back at the club and enjoying the night. No sleep that night. I came back into the club at lunch time and the players were still there. - Meeting Prime Minister John Howard in the dressing room after the game. Perhaps the turning point in the game was the Sattler tackle. We were just holding on early in the second half with the Roosters really putting the pressure on and Todd Byrne broke away

and looked certain to score and Scotty Sattler ran him down and put him into touch. I didn’t think Scott was that fast and when I saw him starting to make ground I was looking at the try line which was looming, but Scott knew what he had to do and that gave all our players the greatest lift and they met the following challenge from the Roosters and went on to score two more tries and register a fairly comfortable 18-6 scoreline. The grand final win was a very significant milestone for our club. It is great to be able to honour that milestone at this week’s game against the Roosters – the 10th anniversary. Picture: Scott Sattler and Rhys Wesser, two of Penrith’s best players during the 2003 campaign, hold the premiership trophy after the 18-6 win over the Roosters at the Olympic Stadium.

ANTHER FANS HAVE A love-hate relationship with Daily Telegraph journalist Phil Rothfield, but ‘Buzz’ managed to get one up on us last weekend when he won a bet with the Weekender about the Sharks v Panthers result. A bet is a bet, so pictured below is ‘Buzz’ in all his glory after the Sharks’ 38-10 win last Sunday. Rothfield wasn’t gloating too much though, telling Extra Time: ”It was a great win by the Sharks, much more convincing than I expected. I still reckon Gus has got it wrong – they’ll be challenging for a premiership in a couple of years, not five.” The rugby league world is mourning the passing of legendary coach Graham Murray. Murray coached Penrith’s reserve grade side to a premiership in 1987, and you don’t have to be Einstein to work out he was heavily involved with blooding some of the players who would later go on to win a top grade title in 1991. NSW Sports Minister, Graham Annesley, paid tribute to Murray: “In an era that saw many changes in the professionalism of rugby league, Graham had great success. Graham will long be remembered as a loyal friend to both rugby league and everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. I extend my sincere condolences to Graham’s family and many, many friends.” Jamie Soward’s rough year is continuing. His English side, the London Broncos, was thumped 70-0 in the Challenge Cup semi final against Wigan last weekend. Soward copped plenty of criticism from the crowd during the contest, something he’s used to after the last couple of years at the Dragons. The 28-year-old is on track to join the Panthers for the 2014 season. The first 5,000 people through the gate at Penrith Stadium tonight will receive a special pennant commemorating 10 years since the 2003 grand final. Get there early! Penrith’s round 25 clash with the Bulldogs will no longer be on the Friday night as planned. The NRL has confirmed it is looking to move the game after the AFL scheduled a Sydney Swans game for the same night.

Newly re-signed Panthers captain Kevin Kingston helped launch the national Kids Step-A-Thon at The Hills Grammar School in Kenthurst last week. He joined Murdoch Children’s Ambassador, Sarah Murdoch as well as Olympian Stephanie Rice and Dr Andrew Rochford to encourage kids to count their steps this September, and raise money for child health research. The rumours are getting stronger that Phil Gould has Warriors star Shaun Johnson well and truly at the top of his hit list. Johnson, a livewire in the halves, would make a perfect partner for the calmer Jamie Soward, who is expected to be partnered with Isaac John in the halves next season. If Johnson does come to Penrith, it’ll be in 2015 and it’ll cost us plenty. Johnson is commanding upwards of $500,000-a-season. Meanwhile, I’m told the Panthers did make initial enquiries about signing Benji Marshall some months ago. But Benji wasn’t interested in playing for another NRL club, which he later confirmed publicly. It’s always good to find a celebrity Panthers fan. This week, I’ve discovered that the very good jockey Nash Rawiller is a fan of the boys. I’ll be backing Nash more often now!

BEHIND THE SCENES AT T H E P A N T H E R S GARTH BRENNAN NSW CUP HEAD COACH

L O W E R G R A D E S F E AT U R E S T O R Y

Young cubs taught a lesson THE PANTHERS WILL BE LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK IN THE HOLDEN CUP THIS WEEKEND AFTER THEY SOMEHOW LET THEIR GUARD DOWN AND WERE THRASHED BY THE TEAM COMING SECOND LAST...

P Years at Panthers: Two Best part about your job: Assisting young men to not only be better rugby league players but to be even better people off the field. Hobbies outside of work: Spending time with my three children Macy, Guy and Halle. What team did you support growing up: I was a massive Peter Sterling fan so it hurts me to say it but it was probably our arch rivals Parramatta. That finished as soon as Sterlo retired though! Favourite Panthers memory: Gus getting sent from the sideline by referee Bill Harrigan when he was coach with the mullet wearing the liquorice all sorts jacket.

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

ENRITH PANTHERS HOLDEN CUP coach David Tangata-Toa has fired off a warning to his players about being complacent ahead of the finals next month. The warning comes after his secondplaced side were thrashed 30-8 by the 15th placed Cronulla Sharks last Sunday at Remondis Stadium. “It’s probably a really good lesson to the boys that if you don’t turn up with the right attitude, it doesn’t matter who you are playing, if you’re not at your best you’re going to struggle to get the result,” Tangata-Toa said. Tangata-Toa knows his side were expected to win and admits the players probably believed their own hype going into the match. “We scored an easy try early on and it probably put us in a false sense of security,” he said. “The next couple of sets we were

really dominant and the players probably thought they wouldn’t have to try that hard and it was just going to happen for them. “Then a couple of things didn’t go our way and the Sharks started playing with confidence and got on a roll. We just couldn’t claw back in the end.” Tonight (Friday), the Panthers will need to make sure their heads are screwed on as they battle to keep their number two ranking alive when they take on the thirdplaced Sydney Roosters. The Panthers last played the Roosters back in Round 8, where the Chooks dealt Penrith their first loss of the season 32-16. “It’s going to be a really good challenge for us, they beat us earlier in the season and our team has changed a lot since then too,” Tangata-Toa said. Meanwhile, Windsor returned to the winner’s circle last Saturday night after defeating the Newtown Jets 36-24.

JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE WITH YVONNE PURTELL

We need your help! YVONNE Purtell is the manager of the Penrith and Districtt Junior Rugby League, nurturing our young footy talent

O

VER THE PAST FEW weeks the Penrith Junior League and Penrith Referees Association have been working towards establishing a partnership with a worthwhile charitable organisation that directly impacts on those in need in our community. Christ Mission Possible (CMP) care for those in need serving the community in regards to crisis accommodation, food relief, clothing drives and weekly community kitchens. As part of the establishment of this partnership we are asking for assistance from our members. As you all know the Under 6 Gala Day is on this Sunday, August 4 and we would like everyone to PLACE A TIN IN THE BIN. If everyone could bring a non-perishable item with them on the day and place in a collection bin at the ground we can then donate this to CMP, which will certainly go a long way in offering food relief for those in need. While we are talking about the Under 6 Gala Day… what a day this is. There will be approximately 700

Under 6-year-old players all at the one venue. There will be 96 10 minute games played over the course of the day with all the players coming together at the end in a March Past. The Panthers NRL team will be coming along, which is always a highlight for the kids. The referees donate their time for this great day and a few years ago they came up with the concept of a Referees vs U6 kids game, this has continued and is well-received by all in attendance. This weekend sees the conclusion of our mini programs, with the Under 6 Gala Day and the finals series commencing in the U7s and U8s. To all the parents, volunteers and players who have been involved in these programs, we hope you have enjoyed the season and we look forward to you all coming back, with your friends, next season. For those involved in finals series games, good luck but remember the most important thing of all: let the kids have fun! A smile is a curve that sets things straight. See you next week.

THE FOOTY SHOW INSIDER

A day on the front line EXCLUSIVE to Extra Time, our secret insider drops all the goss and information from behind the scenes of one of the most popular rugby league shows on television, Channel Nine’s ‘The Footy Show’

T

HE FOOTY SHOW’S BEAT The Boys segment was back on the road this week as the panel accepted a challenge from Australia’s Armed Forces at Holsworthy Army Barracks. The Insider caught up with Erin Molan on set to dish some dirt on how the boys really coped with their day out with the soldiers. The daughter of a long serving Army officer, Erin couldn’t wait to take on the day head on. “I was really excited to be a part of it, my Dad was in the Army for over 40 years so I know a lot about what our soldiers do and the hard work that goes into their day to day exercises,” Erin said. “Our men and women are so talented and I felt privileged to have access to their training procedures”. The female representative for ‘The

Footy Show’ perhaps showed more brass than even an immortal of rugby league. “Joey has no fear on the footy field, tackling 100kg men doesn’t faze him but he was absolutely terrified atop the tower,” Erin said. “It was interesting to see all of the boys so far outside of their comfort zones.” Walking head first down a 20 metre wall left rugby league’s greatest ever halfback in a state of paralysis. Andrew Johns was shaking from head to toe, numbed by the task at hand. True to his character, the champion playmaker overcame his phobia of heights and made it down the wall – anything for ‘The Footy Show’. As a soldier, The Footy Show’s fearless leader Paul ‘Fatty’ Vautin, makes a very good television host.

“I was unfortunate enough to be paired with Fatty and I don’t think you’d want to send him to Iraq,” Erin joked. His unconvincing performance failed to impress any spectators. “To be honest I’d rather be caught with the enemy,” Erin said. Fighting fit for your entertainment, ‘The Footy Show’ airs every Thursday at 8.30pm on Channel Nine. Catch up on anything you’ve missed online at www.footyshow.com.au. If you have got any feedback about the column or the show, don’t hesitate to drop us an email at footyshownrl@ nine.com.au. The Insider monitors the emails at Nine, you know!
