Penrith Panthers v New Zealand Warriors Kick off: Sunday 29/6 • 2PM Mount Smart Stadium Weather: Partly cloudy with winds of 32km/h

Friday 27 June 2014 the western weekender

TV: Fox Sports 1 at 2pm

T

he most important stage of Penrith’s remarkable season to date begins this Sunday when they take on the New Zealand Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium. All the byes are finally out of the way and for the next 11 weeks Penrith will not only hope to cement their place in the NRL’s top eight but hopefully in the all-important top four, in which they currently stand. After clinching five impressive wins on the trot in the lead up to their second and

final bye, many players and staff took time off, some even got out of town, to freshen up for the final three months of the competition. Their 11 game run to the finals begins this Sunday afternoon against a raging New Zealand Warriors outfit who have improved out of sight since new coach Andrew McFadden took over from Matt Elliott earlier in the competition. Over the past month, the in-form Warriors have chalked up three wins from their last four matches, with their only loss coming against South Sydney, in a thriller over in Perth. Penrith’s record against the Warriors is something to be desired. Who can forget that beating at Sportingbet Stadium last year when the Panthers ran rampant over the Kiwis 62-6. Penrith also backed up that record win months later with a gritty effort against the Warriors over in New Zealand. But the Warriors this year are a much different team, a much improved team, but so are the Panthers. However, many punters are tipping Penrith’s winning run to finally end this weekend after more than two months without a loss.

They believe Penrith’s last start effort against the Dragons at Sportingbet wasn’t their prettiest win of the season and that their good run of fortune is bound to end at some point, possibly this weekend. Panthers lock Elijah Taylor, who joined the club from the Warriors in the offseason, watches his former side closely each week and believes they are a much more stable and focused side since coach McFadden took over the reigns. “Defensively their attitude is a lot better and they are working hard for each other,” he told Extra Time on Monday. “They are playing aggressive and they are playing a good mix of the power game before they spread it to Shaunny (Shaun Johnson) who brings his flare.” No team in the competition knows the Warriors game better than the Panthers, who boast three ex-Warriors players in this week’s line-up including Taylor, Lewis Brown and Jeremy Latimore. They also boast former Warriors coach Ivan Cleary, who will have certainly gone over his ‘Warriors notes’ in preparation. The Warriors have only made one forced change to their side that beat the Brisbane Broncos last weekend with former Storm

and Queensland Origin centre Dane Nielsen replacing Ngani Laumape, who was suspended throughout the week for a dangerous throw. Nielsen has been biding his time in New Zealand’s NSW Cup side and hasn’t played in the NRL since April 19, so expect him to be heavily targeted by the Panthers in this one. Two other players the Panthers will be keeping their eye on are Konrad Hurrell and Manu Vatuvei, both of whom are in outstanding form. “We’ve got to stop their set starts with Manu and Konrad,” Taylor admitted. “They are very strong, tough and very good one on one. We have to make sure our attitude is right and we work hard for each other defensively.” One player due to give the Panthers a huge boost to combat the Warriors big forwards is Adam Docker, who returns to first grade this weekend. Docker has been sidelined for the past few weeks with an ongoing back issue but he’ll be fit and firing this weekend. It’ll certainly be a tough test this Sunday. I’m tipping a Panthers win in a close, high scoring affair. Tip: Panthers by 8.

nlike Jamie Soward up against his former club in the Dragons a fortnight ago, Panthers lock Elijah Taylor isn’t expecting any backlash when he lines up against his old side in New Zealand this weekend. It’ll be the first time the 24-year-old will come up against his old teammates, his friends, when the Panthers take on an in-form Warriors outfit at Mt Smart Stadium on Sunday. And while his current teammate in Soward copped a ribbing all week from former teammates and fans before his match-up against St George Illawarra in Round 14, Taylor is expecting a much warmer welcome from the Warriors home crowd. “I’m pretty excited but it’s just like any other game to me. I’m looking forward to playing but I’ll know by kick off that I’ll have to do my job for the team,” Taylor told Extra Time. “I hope it’s a warm welcome. There’s already some banter among the boys but I’m sure they’ll be turning up to the game ready to go hard like I will be.” The Panthers, who sit in second place on points differential, currently feature three ex-Warriors players as well as former Warriors coach Ivan Cleary in the

Taylor said the week off was a great chance for him to get out of town and freshen up for the road to the finals. “I went back home to Auckland and saw my family. I needed to get out of Penrith and freshen up, so it was good.”

Brumbies’ new star recruit T NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

Emu Plains are going to have a massive shock this Sunday when they see Petero Civoniceva take the field for cross town rivals Glenmore Park

here’s not much rugby league legend Petero Civoniceva hasn’t done in our great game. He’s won premierships, won Origins, won international tournaments and even captained the mighty Penrith Panthers for four seasons. However, one thing that’s been missing from his incredible playing record is representing local rugby league side, the Glenmore Park Brumbies. Oh wait, he’s doing that this weekend! The 38-year-old Australian and Queensland legend will be making his big Penrith return this Sunday, June 29, when he dons the famous Brumbies strip and runs out onto Ched Towns Reserve in Glenmore Park. Civoniceva will play a special one-off game with the Brumbies A-grade side when they take on old rivals Emu Plains at 3pm. President of the Glenmore Park Brumbies, Jason Charlton, said the idea for Civoniceva to play with the Brumbies came after an off the cuff remark that sparked a few imaginations. “When Petero was playing with the Panthers he lived in Glenmore Park and supported our club. He often helped with functions and donated a lot of his time and

Petero Civoniceva

sporting gear to raise funds for the club,” he said. “Petero recently started a clothing company called Leading Edge and he’d been trying to get clubs on board to buy his apparel. We did that and began using his gear, and as a throw away comment we said ‘we’ll have to get you to play for the Brumbies now’ and he said ‘I will’.” Despite retiring from the NRL with the Brisbane Broncos in 2012, Civoniceva is still in very good shape and is currently running around with the Redcliffe Dolphins in the Queensland Cup. He also played in last year’s Rugby League World Cup and May’s Pacific Test with home nation Fiji. “Petero’s a bloke that loves rugby league, loves playing and loves helping out,” Mr Charlton said. “He’s grown fond of our club over the years and is the type of bloke that gives back to the junior clubs he’s been associated with. “Our players are so excited to play with a guy who has played for Australia, Origin for Queensland, and it’s a dream for them to play with somebody like Petero.” The club is expecting a record crowd this Sunday so bring down your chairs and blankets and soak up the action.

The winning streak of the mighty Queensland Rugby League side has finally ended but I would be loath to say it is the beginning of a new dynasty for NSW. The result was the only positive that can be taken out of the match, with the game being the worst Origin match in recent years. A number of factors played a part; starting with the poor display from the refs. They failed to maintain anything near to a decent 10 metres, resulting in a defensive slog fest with a raft of cheap shots in tackles, spilling over into push and shove. The lack of policing of the rucks took both hookers out of the game who are usually dominant players with the ball. This also meant two brilliant backlines containing the likes of Inglis and Jennings received minimal ball. Then there was the fact NSW had on too many occasions when the backline was set, a forward that would sweep around and take the ball trying to start the moment. This eroded much of NSW’s attack and limited the quality ball the halves received, especially on Queensland’s try line, as space was already limited due to the lack of 10 metres being kept. On another note, the New Zealand Warriors played some good football at home against the Brisbane Broncos and are certainly going to prove a handful for the Panthers this week, who are travelling across the Tasman. The Warriors, when they get on a roll, can be the best side in the competition by far with their size and skill. So begs the question as to whether Ivan Cleary opts to bring big Jamal back into the side after his return to the game last week, or whether he sticks with the side that has done the job in previous weeks. Manly’s big win has pushed the Panthers back into second position on the ladder so let’s hope that this is not a sign of things to come and the boys can cement their position this week, grabbing a win away from home.

Who’ll be given cheap contracts

with the Masked Panther

Send your Panthers gossip at news@westernweekender.com.au

I want to give a huge wrap to Penrith’s media department and in particular Rob Gutesa, who is the man behind the Panthers’ great online videos of late. Rob has been working with the Panthers for well over a decade, mostly behind the camera on game days, but this season he’s become an integral part of the club’s multimedia team who are giving fans great access to the mighty Panthers off the field. Well done, Rob!

NATHAN TAYLOR

9 @natetaylor87

thoroughly enjoy showing fans what the club was like back in the good old days. With the Penrith Panthers roster just about settled for next season, I’d thought I’d give you a list of players off contract this year. Most of these players currently play in the NSW Cup and some of them will no doubt be offered cheap contracts and second tier deals to keep their Penrith careers alive. The players are: Sam Anderson, Luke Capewell, Anthony Cherrington, Ethan Cook, Tom Eisenhuth, Tom Humble, Eto Nabuli, Wes Naiqama, Matt Robinson, Nathan Smith and Vaipuna Tia Kilifi.

After nearly a month on the sidelines, dealing with personal issues, Jamal Idris returned to rugby league last Sunday afternoon as a member of Penrith’s first placed NSW Cup side. Idris was a late inclusion in the match against North Sydney, which saw the Panthers in the hunt for their eighth straight win of the season.

In exactly one month’s time the Panthers will be jumping on a bus bound for Bathurst. As we all know, the Panthers will play five games in Bathurst over the next five years with this year’s clash against the Cronulla Sharks set down for Saturday, July 26. The country town is bursting with excitement with the game at Carrington Park already sold out of grandstand tickets. General admission tickets are still available, however.

PANTHER RUMBLINGS

Some of the Panthers boys had a brush with Hollywood royalty last Thursday night at the premiere of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s new blockbuster ‘Hercules’. Josh Mansour, Bryce Cartwright, Kevin Naiqama, Matt Robinson and George Jennings were among the Panther brigade strutting down the red carpet alongside other Aussie celebs at George Street Cinemas in the city. I’m told the boys had a great time with Mansour comparing the size of his ‘guns’ to the Rock’s. I think we all know who won that one!

Lower GRADES

Jamal Idris in action Panthers second-rower Lewis Brown and prop Sam McKendry are already contemplating life after football with the pair on the verge of opening up a healthy café in Emu Plains called Nutrition Station. The franchised business, set to open very soon, will sell breakfast, lunch and dinner, and will serve protein shakes, coffee and healthy meals.

The Panther brigade at the launch of ‘Hercules’ Another wrap I’d like to give this week is to the ‘Vintage Penrith Panthers’ Facebook page. If you haven’t discovered it yet, this very popular page began towards the end of last year and features photos, videos and classic memorabilia throughout the 47-year history of our great club. The page is run by two very hard working Panthers members who

In what could be described as a spooky coincidence or lucky escape, while Panther fans were mourning the tragic death of Ben Alexander 22 years ago last Saturday, another young Panthers star Ryan Cusack was also involved in a serious car accident on the very same night as Alexander’s anniversary. Fortunately Cusack, who is a member of the club’s Holden Cup squad, survived relatively unharmed after he misjudged a roundabout in Regentville and ploughed into a resident’s home. I’m told Cusack was not drunk at the wheel or showing off with friends as he was driving alone, instead was only very new to the area and didn’t judge the road well.

The 23-year-old former Titan replaced Wes Naiqama in the centres, who was being rested, and made a huge impact early with some great runs and huge hits. The Panthers got on the board first with captain Kevin Kingston scoring his first points of the season and Penrith’s first points of the day. With the Panthers up 6-0, North Sydney hit straight back to level the scores midway through the first half. But with some great tries to Kieran Moss and Kevin Naiqama to close out the half, the Panthers headed into the break leading 16-6. The Bears made things interesting in the opening few minutes of the second half, closing the gap to 16-12, but the ensuing 20 minutes belonged to the Panthers as the scoreline blew out to a 32-12 lead. With the game presumably in the bag, the Panthers took their foot off the gas and let the Bears make things interesting. The final score, Penrith 32 North Sydney 28. This Sunday the Panthers will take on the New Zealand Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland.

PANTHERS FLASHBACK

JUNIORS @penrith_juniors

We are now into the second half of the Junior League season with our semi-finals starting in just over seven weeks. I am in the process of putting the draw together for our Family Fun Day at the end of the U6 and U7 season. A mammoth task as we will have 54 games of football played over the course of the day at one venue, something I don’t think you would see in any other district. In fact, you wouldn’t see that many games of football played across the weekend in some other districts. The behind-the-scenes work to ensure this day is a successful one is attributed to the wonderful volunteers we have in our great game. The McDonald’s Garton Group Junior League Relay Final will be held at the Panthers v Broncos game at Sportingbet Stadium on Monday, July 14. You will see Minchinbury, St Marys, Glenmore Park, Colyton, Mt Druitt, Emu Plains and Hawkesbury City vying for the title in 2014. On behalf of the Junior League I would like to thank Kathryn and Ian from the McDonald’s Garton Group for their magnificent support and sponsorship of this great event. Last Monday we saw the third of our Panthers NRL Junior League Clinics and it was great to see all the kids there. We will have two more scheduled in the coming weeks for the remaining clubs to ensure that all clubs have had the same opportunity to attend. Big thanks to our NRL players who support these clinics each year. I attended the program TRY TIME being run through the Brothers club last Saturday, which gives young people with intellectual disabilities and special needs the opportunity to participate in the game. It was great to see these young men having fun in very cold and damp conditions.

FROM THE VAULT

Friday 27 June 2014 the western weekender

From our vault this week comes a great promotional flyer celebrating Penrith’s 2003 premiership success. The Panthers paraded along High Street on Friday, November 28 and the event was organised by the Penrith City Centre Association. The spirit of Penrith was certainly on show as locals celebrated the premiership triumph in style. We can only hope that Penrith CBD Corporation will have to plan a similar parade for the end of this season!

ust 11 fans. That’s how many people turned up to a post-match function at Panthers Leagues Club one night back in 2002. Coming off a wooden spoon season, the Panthers lost their opening nine matches of the 2002 season, including a 64-6 thumping at the hands of Parramatta in the opening round. In what was John Lang’s introduction to the troubled club, it would take until round 10 before Penrith would finally put a win on the board. Former CEO Shane Richardson remembers those 11 fans well – in fact, it was a line in the sand as far as the future was concerned. It was also a night that the number of fans outnumbered the players. “There was Keith Rhind the Vice Chairman of the club, myself, John Lang, Max Cowan, a few others, the players and 11 fans,” Richardson says in Men In Black. “The night we won the Grand Final we acknowledged those 11 people... it was a bonding night. We didn’t know for sure that we were going to succeed in the end but we would give it our all to somehow resurrect our fortunes.” It wasn’t that night alone, but the circumstances certainly played a part in the recipe of success that would follow the next season. When Penrith lifted the premiership trophy at ANZ Stadium in October 2003, Mr Richardson and many of the players must have thought back to that night and those 11 fans. It was an indication of how far that playing group had come, and the enormous steps forward the club had taken. Another indicator was the side’s first win at home in that 2002 season. It came against Cronulla in round 11 and was very much unexpected – a 24-22 victory that delighted the 6,358 fans who turned out in wet conditions. It was the lowest crowd of the season, but they’d witnessed the most important game. Moreso, they were the 6,358 fans who deserved the 2003 title the most. If Penrith’s premiership success in 1991 was the result of 25 years of blood, sweat and tears, then the 2003 success was about paying back the faithful who’d sat through more than a decade of poor

Scott Sattler against two Souths players

If the 1991 win was due to blood, sweat and tears, the 2003 win was for the fans

results. The payback was something special, and nobody will ever forget the events of October 5, 2003 and that remarkable Grand Final win. History shows the premiership win as a shock and a surprise. To those who remained loyal during the tough times, it was a lot more than that. We’re tipping those 11 fans are still coming to the footy week in, week out no matter where their side may be sitting on the competition table. Let’s hope they are rewarded this year too.

Big hits? Must be Plum!

Plum speaks to journalists at a press conference recently

He’s big, he’s tough, he’s Nigel Plum. Plum is one of Penrith’s hardest hitting forwards and certainly provides plenty of highlights for fans every week. In fact, so many highlights it was hard to narrow down the photos this week!

Chiropractic for arthritis addresses the practical issue of getting the body to move more freely. Once the body is aligned to move with fewer restrictions , the need for pain medication lessens, or disappears altogether . Chiropractic as a regular treatment will also help prevent arthritis or at least its damaging effects. This form of prevention is probably the most crucial benefit in treating the disease. The lifestyle changes and therapies associated with chiropractic will influence diet, exercise and maintaining the body’s alignment . Proper weight and a healthy immune system are both important factors in limiting the devastating effects of all forms of arthritis.
