P

enrith travel to the Gold Coast this Saturday with a six point gap on second place and an absolute stranglehold on the competition. But with their State of Origin stars likely to miss this clash, ruling out the Titans completely would be a fool’s game. Gold Coast’s performances this season aren’t reflected by their position on the ladder. They have shown significant improvement and certainly don’t deserve to be sitting in second last spot. But with just three wins, that is their current fate – and a spot in the Finals is looking more and more unlikely. Had Josh Hannay’s side done a couple of things differently in some close matches this

Broadcast

year they may sit significantly closer to the top eight. Losses like the four-point defeat at the hands of the Dolphins in Round 2 and the eight point loss to the Warriors in Round 7 are examples of games where a bounce of the ball could have changed things. They should have beaten the Tigers at Leichhardt Oval last week too, but again they just aren’t an 80 minute team at the moment and that’s something Hannay will be working on for next year – to get more consistency out of his side. Penrith proved against the Warriors last month that even without their Origin stars, they are a tough side to contend with. The likes of Jack Cogger, Paul Alamoti and Dylan Edwards really stood up, and you’d expect the same thing here. Penrith are such a systematic side that no matter who is out, everyone knows their job

KAYO | FOX LEAGUE

and can tick the boxes required. It’s what makes them so frustrating to defend against and even more frustrating to try to get on top of. On paper Penrith should win this and win it comfortably, even without their Blues representatives. But dangers lurk within this Titans team. Keano Kini is one of the most exciting players in the game and whether it’s backing up a break or producing his own piece of magic (like he did against the Broncos earlier this month), he is hard to handle and a definite danger. The Titans do have some grunt up front with Moeaki Fotuaiki and Klese Haas, and Beau Fermor is always dangerous on the edge. Phillip Sami has the most post-contact metres of any player in the competition this season, so again if he’s on his game, there’s opportunity there for the home side. But there’s just not enough football brains in

2GB 873 | ABC 702

this Titans team. Nobody who stands up, wants to lead the way for his team and inspire them a victory. It just doesn’t feel like there’s a loud voice. And the biggest worry of all? Gold Coast has made more errors than any other team in the competition this year. They just can’t hold the ball, and it means they rarely get enough momentum and can’t build the pressure required to score points. There is a bit to like about this Titans team, but it moreso sits in the potential category than delivery. They will be a better team next year, and Hannay will be a better coach with a full season under his belt. If Penrith implement their usual game plan, keep errors to a minimum and build the pressure they usually do, it’s hard to see them getting beaten here. Tip: Panthers by 18.

Talagi keen to stay at Panthers If Talagi remains at Penrith and continues to play the way he does, more representative honours could be in his future. Last month, prior to the first State of Origin in Sydney, Talagi was invited by the NSW Blues to be a shadow player at camp. The short but fruitful stint lit a spark in Talagi that he’d love to experience again one day. “It was a cool experience,” he admitted. “After our game against the Dragons in Magic Round, I got told I was going to be part of Blues camp and it was really exciting. I got to be a part of camp for a few days there and it was good to rub shoulders with all those boys. “It was good to get that little taste of it and it’s 100 per cent something that I want to be a part of again.” Before Origin comes calling again, Talagi and the Panthers have a job to do this Saturday evening against the Titans on the Gold Coast. The match will be Penrith’s first since they put 68 points on the Wests Tigers back in Round 14. The Panthers go into the match as red-hot favourites despite them being without their Origin players for the contest. “It’s definitely a tough challenge. The Titans aren’t a team to take lightly and I think we learned that lesson last year when they sort of came back to bite us,” Talagi said. “If we have to play without the Origin players again, I feel like that Warriors game the other week does give us a lot of confidence. Having that next man up mentality and everyone sort of lifting from it, we sort of embrace that challenge.”

P

anthers five-eighth Blaize Talagi is hopeful of getting a new deal done with Penrith, which will keep him at the club beyond 2027. The 21-year-old excitement machine is one of about a dozen Panthers players off-contract at the end of next season, with speculation mounting as to which big names will stay and which will go. One player who’s hoping to extend his career at the foot of the Mountains is Talagi. While the former Eel admits negotiations to extend at Penrith haven’t begun yet, he is more than happy to wait until it’s his turn. “No, I haven’t had those chats yet. I think the club will worry about the older boys first and then we’ll see what happens from there,” Talagi told Extra Time on Tuesday. The Samoan international is currently playing his second season at the Panthers after switching from his debut club Parramatta in 2025. Talagi has played 35 games for Penrith already, including all 13 this year. The playmaker said he’d love nothing more than to continue his career where he’s already seen his game improve out of sight. “Yeah for sure, I never want to leave any club,” Talagi said when pressed if he’d like to stay. “I’m happy here and that will take care of itself. “I feel like my game’s definitely developed a lot especially even just from last year. I want to keep playing good footy and keep being consistent.”

Jenkins came close to leaving Panthers again NATHAN TAYLOR

P

anthers fans far and wide celebrated the re-signing of the NRL’s leading try scorer Tom Jenkins last Friday afternoon, but what they may not know is how close it came to almost not happening. The 25-year-old signed a new three-year deal with the club last week that will see him in a Panthers jersey until the end of the 2029 NRL season. However, speaking with the media on Tuesday, Jenkins revealed that he almost signed elsewhere after talks between the club and his manager broke down. “I think a few times over the past few weeks things were getting a bit ‘hairy’ and I wasn’t sure what my future was going to look like but I had faith in my manager and I had faith in the club that we’d be able to get a new deal done,” Jenkins said. “In saying that, there was probably a few days there, a few weeks there, where I wasn’t too sure where I’d end up. I’m glad to get it done.” Currently leading the NRL with 20 tries to his name, the man they call “Milky” was in high demand from rival clubs needing a gun try scorer on their roster. Jenkins said he had some tantalising offers

on the table but wouldn’t reveal which clubs were chasing his signature. “There were definitely a few clubs I was heavily considering especially when talks were sort of breaking down here. I won’t name them just out of respect for them but obviously I have a lot of appreciation, and they were really good in the whole process of it,” he said.

“I wasn’t too sure where I’d end up” Jenkins said talks with the Panthers almost broke down over money, with the Young Cherrypickers junior wanting to be paid what he believed he deserved. “You can tell there’s a salary cap squeeze here and as much as money’s not a massive deal breaker, there does come a time where you sort of have to understand value and what you deserve,” Jenkins said. “But there’s also a price to pay when you’re staying at a good club like Penrith. It was just about finding that happy medium that suited

myself and suited the club.” If Jenkins did leave the Panthers at the end of this season, it wouldn’t have been the first time. In 2024, he signed with the Newcastle Knights on a two-year contract before departing one year in due to several factors. In 2025, he returned to Penrith after pleading with coach Ivan Cleary to give him another chance. Asked whether he had any hesitation about leaving again after his disappointing stint in Newcastle when he last departed, Jenkins emphatically said ‘no’. “Definitely not! I think I’ve matured so much as a player and I knew that the clubs interested and the ones that I was considering were such good clubs and had good cultures,” he said. “So, it wasn’t a hesitation to leave, but more a preference to stay. That’s what my mindset was Tom Jenkins is staying with Penrith. Photo: Melinda Jane. around it.”

PANTHER RUMBLINGS

with The Masked Panther

Sports Minister’s shocker! Kamper the kidder: Is NSW Sports Minister Steve Kamper considering a career switch to stand-up comedy? One would think so after his bizarre comment while talking up another milestone for the Penrith Stadium redevelopment last week. With the topping out of the Western Grandstand, Kamper celebrated with this line: “Topping out the western grandstand is a major milestone and proof that the Minns Labor Government is delivering on its commitment to deliver a brand new stadium, after almost a decade of inaction from the former Government.” Now getting political is a rarity for this column, but Kamper can’t be serious. The former government he speaks of advocated for the project (via former MP Stuart Ayres), announced the project (via former Premier Dominic Perrottet), funded the project (under former Treasurer Matt Kean) and indeed was pushing for the project to be bigger. Hardly “inaction”. Labor meanwhile was essentially dragged kicking and screaming to go through with it. The comment raised plenty of eyebrows, and was unnecessary given the circumstances (and perhaps showed an ignorance to the lingering doubts about the project itself in the community). What’s more bizarre though is why the Liberal Party let it go through to the keeper. Where was Shadow Sports Minister Natalie Ward?

Steve Kamper.

Spotted: Panthers coach Ivan Cleary and his wife Bec at The Log Cabin last Friday night. Spotted: Penrith legend Mark Geyer at Sydney Airport on Monday, flying out for State of Origin in Melbourne this week. Longer expiration for Milky: The re-signing of Tom Jenkins is a huge boost for Penrith at a time when everyone has been talking about a mass exodus out of the club at the end of 2027. The youngster has signed a new three-year deal that will keep him at Penrith

until the end of 2029. It’s particularly important given Penrith seem resigned to the fact that fan favourite winger Brian To’o will depart the club at the end of next year.

Saints to host 2GB: The Continuous Call Team will broadcast live from St Marys Leagues Club this Saturday. Mark Levy, Darryl Brohman and the crew will be in the Sapphire Family Lounge from 1pm.

Spill the tea: Have you spotted a Panther out and about? Got some gossip worth sharing? I don’t keep secrets but I do protect my sources. Email maskedpanther@westernweekender. com.au.

Spreading the word: More than a few Panthers jerseys were spotted in Vancouver this past week, as Aussies flocked overseas to support the Socceroos. A couple of Penrith tragics were over the moon when they ran into Josh Mansour, who happily posed for photos. Spotted: Panthers forward Liam Martin on an early morning coffee run at Caddens Corner on Sunday. Maloney’s comeback: James Maloney is not only doing the corporate sportsman’s luncheon rounds (he’s pictured at the recent Brothers lunch), he’s also returning to the field. The former Panthers five-eighth and Chief of Cheekiness has signed up with the Picton Magpies. He’s set to make his debut for the club against the Campbelltown City Kangaroos next weekend. As an added bonus, Maloney will also be running coaching clinics with some of the club’s younger players.

NORMAN’S

McLean, Kenny eye comebacks: There’s every chance Mitch Kenny will be available for next weekend’s clash against North Queensland in Townsville. Kenny suffered a serious leg injury back in Round 7 but his recovery is almost complete. In fact, the Panthers posted this photo of him on social media this week – suggesting his return isn’t far off. Meantime, Casey McLean’s quad injury that ruled him out of State of Origin II is likely to keep him out for two to three games.

ANALYS IS

My big dream for NRL expansion I Lang on

League

A second team in New Zealand is a must says Peter Lang.

Anyone chuckling that a rugby league team won’t work in an AFL dominated state only has to look at the success of the Melbourne Storm, which now has a solid fanbase that is rusted on. The Storm recently passed the 40,000 membership mark. There’s no reason that Adelaide can’t draw something similar given time and on-field success.

Now the second team which is more of a ‘no brainer’ must come from New Zealand where rugby league is running rampant at the moment. The popularity of the New Zealand Warriors or ‘Wahs’, as they’re also known, is at fever-pitch with sold-out home crowds and outstanding television ratings. New Zealand Rugby League

reports that there are over 34,000 registered players with significant registrations right across all age groups. Don’t get me wrong, I fully support Papua New Guinea’s entry into the NRL but their inclusion just gives further credence to the argument that New Zealand deserves to have two teams running around in the competition. While rugby league may still not be as popular as rugby union in New Zealand, many would argue that is quickly gaining ground especially in highly concentrated areas around Auckland and in the southern and western suburbs. A team from Wellington has been floated many times over the last 10 years and I think it’s time for the NRL to make it happen. I would stagnate the entry of both these teams and introduce a second New Zealand side in 2030 with Adelaide joining the competition in 2032. The Dolphins who are in their fourth season, have proven a huge success and show that expansion can work. A team in Tasmania one day would just about complete the picture but one step at a time. But how good would that be. Am I crazy?

58847

with Peter Lang

f the NRL are serious about continuing to grow the game of rugby league across Australia and New Zealand, then by 2032 the competition needs to expand to include a team from Adelaide and a second side from New Zealand. I know it will take the number of teams to an uneven 21 but we’ve lived with ‘byes’ for many years and I don’t think it should be used as a deal breaker when it comes to expansion. I still can’t cop being called a national competition when there is no team in Adelaide. I know the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and Super League tried a team in South Australia before ultimately closing it down. I believe that had more to do with brokering a peace deal between Super League and the ARL than actually giving the franchise a chance to succeed and grow. I mean the Rams were given two years before being shut down at the end of the 1998 season. A side needs more than a couple of years to become ingratiated into the fabric of the city and state. Not having an NRL team in Adelaide also continues to give the AFL a free shot in that part of the country.

BEHIND THE GAME

From the farm back to footy F

Kalani Going. Photo: Melinda Jane.

or a long time, Kalani Going thought his footy career would be played in reserve grade, but the lock was given a lifeline by the Panthers and has already made the most of the chance. Going’s journey to the NRL didn’t come out of a fairytale, for four years Going gave away footy for good and instead worked on his uncle’s farm. Going’s interest in the game was stirred again through training with Brady and Rob Rush, sons of New Zealand Sevens great Eric Rush. Going then returned to play for Tweed in the Queensland Cup before he signed with the New Zealand Warriors. The now 29-year-old then made his first grade NRL debut in 2023 for the Warriors. In 2025, Going captained the Warriors to NSW Cup and NRL State Championship titles. He also won the NSW Cup Player of the Year.

Going then signed with the Penrith Panthers for the 2026 season where he has already taken to the field for three games. When Going was given the opportunity to play for the Panthers, he said he jumped at the chance to learn from the modern day greats. “I’m grateful to be here and I’m just trying to make the most of the opportunity that they’ve given me,” Going reflected. “I think it is unreal to be around the players that are here, they’ve won four premierships in the last five years. “I’m just trying to soak in as much knowledge as they can offer me and just live up to the standards they set.” The journey Going has been on has been full of ups and downs, something Going said taught him a lot of life lessons. “Footy has taught me patience,” he said. “I took a bit of a journey, and I think just learning that sometimes it’s not happening right now but if you’re patient and keep working hard towards those goals, it’ll come.”
