ast year’s ‘Miracle in Mudgee’ will be talked about a lot this week in the lead-up to Saturday’s clash between Penrith and Canberra in regional NSW. But let me tell you where it would not have been talked about: Panthers training. Nor during Canberra’s preparations. Both Ivan Cleary and Ricky Stuart have been around long enough to know that, regardless of who won or lost, focusing on a game from last season as part of your preparations for this one is a fool’s game. It was, at the end of the day, a run of the mill regular season game – an exciting one at that, but nothing more. The sides head to Mudgee on Saturday both off the back of wins – Penrith getting past

Parramatta unconvincingly last Thursday night, while the Raiders thrashed the Tigers; but it’s hard to get much out of that game given the current state of Benji Marshall’s team. Canberra come into this match sitting in 11th spot, a far cry from the lofty position they enjoyed on top of the table for much of last year. With the Sea Eagles crumbling, the Knights suffering big injuries and everyone having indifferent feelings about the Cowboys and Bulldogs, you can definitely see a path for the Raiders to edge into the top eight. They just have to keep winning, which means Penrith face another side with desperation as part of their match day kit. It’s been the reality for a few weeks in a row now, so it’s nothing new for the Panthers – though they haven’t quite mastered handling it. Canberra, by the way, face sides like the Knights and Cowboys on their way to Septem-

ber – so they’d know they very much control their own destiny over the next little while. For Penrith, this little stretch of unconvincing form isn’t really a concern. This is such an experienced footy side, and you just have to trust that when the whips are cracking in September, they will elevate to their best. Right now, they’re playing like the way you go to work on a Thursday morning – the finish is in sight, but it’s not quite Friday. You’ll get the job done, but perhaps without all that much spark. But this is a big month for Ivan Cleary’s side. The Raiders in Mudgee then top four battles with the Warriors and Roosters before they head to Melbourne to take on the Storm – never an easy task. How the Panthers handle the workload of the final two weeks of the competition will largely be determined by what happens in the next month.

And Ivan Cleary certainly isn’t turning a blind eye to improvement. He’s dropped Blaize Talagi this week, clearly concerned about the left side defence. Canberra will throw everything at this and they stay in matches because they refuse to stop looking for opportunities. That’s why they are second in the competition for tackle breaks – they never give up on the play. And they certainly have some game breakers who are tearing up the field at the moment, though the loss of Hudson Young for the rest of the season is a significant blow. It’ll be chilly in Mudgee on Saturday night – and ball handling could well come into play as night sets in. But both sides are certainly used to frost on the windshield and that winter bite in the air. In the end, Penrith are too classy. Tip: Panthers by 8.

Origin recall has reignited Marto NATHAN TAYLOR
A
fter a rollercoaster season due to injury, Panthers favourite Liam Martin is feeling healthy and ready to rip in ahead of the 2026 NRL Finals. Martin missed the opening rounds of the season due to a calf strain before sitting out a further six weeks back in April and May with a serious knee injury. The time on the sideline saw Martin overlooked for the opening two Origin matches before he was recalled by coach Laurie Daley for the decider in Brisbane. Martin was brilliant at Suncorp – playing the full 80 minutes and tormenting those pesky Queenslanders the only way he knows how. Speaking with Extra Time on Tuesday, the
29-year-old father of one said running out for the Blues in Origin III definitely gave him the confidence boost he needed. “Getting selected did feel good, I was missing it,” Martin said. “I was watching the first two games from home as a fan… it was something different compared to the last few years, so it was pretty cool to get out there and experience it again. “I was itching to get back out there, so when

I got the opportunity again, I was like, ‘I’m just going to make the most of it and really knuckle down for the week’. I’m so glad we got the win.” Martin admitted to being a “little nervous” prior to his Origin return but, in the end, everything worked out – not only for Martin and the Blues but the Panthers as well. “Since the game, it’s sort of given me the confidence that I can go out there and do a job for the team. Origin was a real confidence booster, I’m really happy with it,” he said. “My knee is feeling good. My

body is feeling good. I just have to keep working hard and keep improving.” This Saturday evening Martin and the Panthers will return to Glen Willow Oval in Mudgee for a blockbuster match against the Canberra Raiders. Last year, the two sides met at the same venue with the Raiders winning in a Golden Point thriller dubbed the ‘Miracle in Mudgee’. Martin said coming up against an opposition fighting for a spot in the top eight is always a real challenge. “Those teams are certainly hungry and have got so much on the line,” he said. “I think every team gives us their best throughout the year. We’ve just got to be on top of our game. I’m looking forward to a decent battle.” Another thing Martin is looking forward to is having his long-term future sorted. The backrower is one of many Panthers stars off contract at the end of next season, with his playing future well and truly up in the air. Martin said he’s seen his name in the headlines over the past few months, with certain rumours about where he’ll land in 2028 making him laugh. “It’s pretty funny… you just sort of try and ignore it but it’s funny some of the things you see and read and you’re just like, ‘you’ve got no idea what’s really going on’,” he said. “I sort of ignore it and let it all play out. Sort of focus on my footy and it’ll work itself out.” As to whether he’d like to remain in Penrith beyond 2027, Martin said he’d love nothing more than to stay put. “Yeah absolutely! I’ve been here for 10 years now. I’ve got a little boy here. I love it here. I love this club. I would love to stay, but you never know,” he said. “We have to see what happens.”

Family always comes first for To’o NATHAN TAYLOR
F
amily is important to every football player but for people like Brian To’o, it is everything. With his contract expiring at Penrith at the end of next season and talk of a move to the Chiefs in PNG doing the rounds, family is who To’o will turn to when making one of the biggest decisions of his life. “There’s a lot of thought process that goes into it, especially with family,” To’o told Extra Time. “Family is a big one for me. I’ve got two kids now and a wife. The whole process is definitely going to be pretty crazy because it’s not just my little family, it’s our own families as well.” To’o is going to be hot property if he hits the open market on November 1, with numerous clubs both here and overseas set to chase his signature. Just what he’ll do is anyone’s guess with not even To’o knowing where his head is at right now in terms of his long-term playing future. “I don’t really like to think too far ahead. I like to stay in the present moment. Whatever happens, happens,” the 27-year-old said. “I still have a job, and all that contract stuff will come eventually.
Brian To’o will play game 150 this Saturday against Canberra. Photo: Melinda Jane.
When the time comes, we’ll have a chat about it, but as for now I’ve got to focus on the games ahead and the Finals as well.” After a sensational rookie season in 2019, To’o will celebrate 150 NRL
games this Saturday night when the Panthers battle the Canberra Raiders in Mudgee. It’s been an unbelievable ride for the Coke Zero fanatic that’s seen him win four NRL premierships and
counting. The St Marys junior is also on the cusp of reaching a century of tries and doing it during his 150th match will be extra special. “It would be pretty cool to have my last name up there on the honour
roll, up there with all the other great players,” To’o said, who’s planning a Spider-man try celebration if he scores on the Glen Willow Oval turf on Saturday. “It would be pretty cool to reach 100 tries, especially for the brothers. They’ve done so much for me and it’s always good to give back to them as well.” To’o is the ultimate teammate and that couldn’t have been more evident than recently when he handled his axing from Laurie Daley’s NSW Blues side for Origin III with class and professionalism. To’o said he was “all for” the decision that saw Dolphin Jack Bostock take his spot. “The team always comes first for me, whatever is best for the team,” he said. “I put my heart and soul into that and just to see the boys lift up that trophy and bring it home, it definitely meant the world to me.” And To’o said he has no ill feelings towards Daley too, declaring he would love to earn his spot back next year. “I’ll obviously be back and I definitely want to earn the right to be back as well,” he said. “I’ve just got to keep working hard at club level and hopefully I can earn my spot again.”

PANTHER RUMBLINGS
with The Masked Panther
Marto’s World Cup dream Marto desperate for World Cup call-up: Liam Martin is determined to have a strong finish to the season with Penrith and get a call-up to the Australian team for the World Cup at the end of the year. Marto missed out on the Ashes series last year, opting to stay behind for the birth of his son. He obviously has no regrets, but missing out has made him hungry to wear the green and gold this year. It’s going to be a busy period for Martin. He’s commenced preliminary talks with Penrith about a contract extension. While it’s understood he has softened on an initial desire to play in Papua New Guinea, there is no question Martin is on the radar of several NRL clubs – if he goes to market, don’t be surprised if the Bulldogs, Eels and Wests Tigers all have a crack.
Liam Martin.
Dream debut (kind of): It wasn’t exactly his first NRL game, but it probably felt like a debut for Jaxen Edgar against the Eels last Thursday night at CommBank Stadium. His official debut game actually came last year, but he was an unexpected inclusion mid-game – so he didn’t have the huge array of friends and family that tend to gather for big moments like this. They were there in big numbers last Thursday to celebrate Edgar’s performance against the Eels.
Creativity shines: Credit to these fans who had two of the more unique signs we’ve seen at the footy in recent times at CommBank Stadium last Thursday night.
Country-lovin’ Panthers: Move over Brian To’o and that boom box, a country music revolution is sweeping through the Panthers camp. Join Dylan Edwards’ jam session and you’ll be grooving along to some Luke Combs. Liam Henry loves it old school with the great Alan Jackson, while Lindsay Smith is a big Jordan Davis fan. You’ll find Kalani Going chilling to some Chris Stapleton, while Billy Scott is joining Edwards in the Combs fan club.
Cleary tees off: Panthers legend Nathan Cleary has launched his own kicking tee under the NC7 brand. He’s using the tee himself, and it’s available to purchase from his website at www.nathancleary.com.au. NC7 match balls are also being sold via the site, as Cleary expands his brand. Mayor on the hunt: Mid-Western Regional Council Mayor Des Kennedy is on the hunt for a replacement for the Penrith Panthers, who finish their short-term agreement to play in Mudgee this season. The Panthers took three home games on the road this year but that will scale back to two next year when they return to Penrith Stadium, with Bathurst and Magic Round on the agenda. There will be no renewal of the Mudgee agreement, so Kennedy is on the lookout for another NRL club to head his way.
Cleary’s last dance: Sportsbet has launched a market that leans into Ivan Cleary’s final two years at the club. ‘The Last Dance’ offers odds of $10.00 if you believe Penrith can farewell the super coach in style and win both the 2026 and 2027 Grand Finals.
Spotted: Panthers legend Mark Geyer, with a Western Weekender in hand, grabbing a coffee at Southlands Shopping Centre last week.
Spotted: Injured Panthers hooker Mitch Kenny enjoying some Frango’s for dinner in Penrith last Friday night.

Robot referees? We’re not sure what the purpose of this Parramatta Eels robot was at CommBank Stadium last Thursday night, but Panthers coach Ivan Cleary certainly enjoyed saying g’day. Perhaps the robot is learning the ropes and will one day be a referee? Or at least throw him in The Bunker! Spill the tea: I don’t keep secrets, but I do protect my sources. If you’ve got some gossip to share or you spot a Panthers player or official out and about, let us know about it. Email maskedpanther@westernweekender.com.au.

ith 11 players still off contract at the end of the 2027 season I thought I’d look at each player and give my educated opinion as to who I think will re-sign with the Panthers. I think it’s also time I stopped sitting on the fence and weighed in on the debate regarding whether Nathan ‘Clez’ Cleary will stay the Prince of Penrith or depart for greener pastures. Nathan Cleary: I’ve gone backand-forth over the last few months on whether ‘Clez’ would re-sign. At one stage I thought he was all but gone. Recent comments he’s made has me thinking that the best player in the NRL may not leave the foot of the Mountains after all. Some of his answers have been a bit cryptic but I’m now prepared to say that I think Cleary will re-sign and remain with Penrith and that a deal will be finalised before November 1. Verdict: Cleary to re-sign with Penrith Isaah Yeo: I was never convinced that Yeo would leave but his comment about going to November 1 had me concerned. Recent comments have indicated that Yeo will stay at the Panthers and retire a one-club man and become the first to play 300 games for Penrith.
Superstar Panthers Liam Martin, Isaah Yeo and Nathan Cleary.
Verdict: Yeo to re-sign with Penrith Liam Martin: Marto staying will depend on what type of deal he is offered by the Panthers. This is the last big contract he will sign and reports suggest he knows his worth which is around the $800,000 mark. To stay he might have to settle for less but sign on for longer. Verdict: Martin to re-sign with Penrith
Brian To’o: ‘Bizza’ has kept his cards close to his chest and not made many comments about the possibility of joining his best friend Jarome Luai at the PNG Chiefs. Of all the players coming off contract, I think he’s the one that will leave after his contract expires next season and join the Chiefs for one last big pay-day. But his family will have a big impact. Verdict: To’o will leave Penrith
Moses Leota: Unfortunately, I think that Leota will receive some massive offers from other clubs and leave the Panthers. Verdict: Leota will leave Penrith Blaize Talagi: The Panthers will continue to invest in Talagi and offer him a decent contract extension to stay despite him being dropped from first grade this week. Verdict: Talagi will re-sign with Penrith Paul Alamoti: Penrith want to keep Alamoti and Alamoti wants to stay. Verdict: Alamoti will re-sign with Penrith. Isaiah Papali’i: I think Papali’i has resurrected his career at the Panthers and will end up staying put. Verdict: Papali’i will re-sign with Penrith Luron Patea: With his path seemingly blocked at Penrith unfortunately Luron will look elsewhere to further his career. Verdict: Patea will leave Penrith Billy Scott: Scott will re-sign with Penrith John Fonua: Fonua will leave Penrith Well, there you have it, my educated guesses as to who I think will stay or leave the club. Only time will tell how many I’ll get right.

BEHIND THE GAME
McLean is living the dream A
Casey McLean. Photo: Melinda Jane.
lot of people say playing professional footy is their dream but that rings true for Panthers young gun Casey McLean more than anyone. McLean is just 20-yearsold and has already played 44 games in the NRL, quickly being labelled a superstar of the game but the centre says he just tries to enjoy every moment. “I think it’s taught me to just enjoy life itself, I’m living my childhood dream out by playing footy,” McLean told Behind the Game. “If I wasn’t a full-time player, I’d still be playing footy on the weekends so I’m grateful and lucky enough to be able to call it a job.” Since becoming a full-time player in the Panthers squad, McLean has
had his ups and downs including a recent injury that ruled him out of State of Origin, but he said his partner Leila always helps him through any tough times. “She is a big part of where I am today and keeps me grounded when I need to be,” he said. “If I’m at one of my lowest points, she knows what to say and knows how I am and it helps me come back to who I am and move on. “As soon as I started playing she has been there. She’s been there right from the start.” To get his mind off footy – like many of the Panthers – McLean has been trying his hand at golf but says it doesn’t come as naturally to him as footy does. “There is a fair few boys here who play, I’m no good though!” McLean laughed. “I’m down the bottom somewhere. Lindsay Smith is one of the best as well as Liam Henry and Freddy Lussick. “Some boys are pretty good; they are all up here but then I’m just working at it. I’m at the lowest spectrum of it.”

PANTHER MEMORIES Royce Simmons’ final game in first grade is etched in every Penrith fan’s memory given it was a famous Grand Final. We all know Simmons scored two tries in what was a classic Penrith victory at the Sydney Football Stadium on a special September day. But often forgotten is Simmons’ other big farewell – his final game at his beloved Penrith Park. The game was against Balmain on Sunday, August 18 in 1991. Before a huge crowd of 18,827 the Panthers ran riot – winning 41-12 and leaving Balmain shellshocked. Simmons didn’t get over the line, but he did get the opportunity to kick a goal towards the end of the game – landing the conversion. It would be the only goal of his first grade career. Simmons was cheered off the field by not only his teammates, but former Panthers who were there on the day celebrating the club’s 25th anniversary.
