t would be easy to say the wheels have fallen off the Panthers at the wrong time of the year, and that the hopes of another Premiership during this era are starting to dwindle. After all, Ivan Cleary’s men have lost five of their last eight games. Crisis, right? I don’t think so. And I think you have to look deeper at those losses to understand the current situation and realise that fixing this little slump of sorts is not as complicated as it may seem. Two of the five losses were to the Titans and Cowboys during the challenging State of Origin period. They weren’t ideal performances, but it’s hard to put much stock in those games given the troops missing and the disruption involved. So then you go to the Brisbane game – a

disappointing 14-12 loss but a night in which the Broncos’ season was very much on the line and the unexpected rain brought the sides closer together. Against both the Warriors and Roosters, Penrith faced teams at the top of their game. They were both high quality matches, with a lot of ball in play. Nothing about either Penrith performance had me heading to the nearest metaphorical bridge to consider jumping off, but you can’t deny the significant confidence boost the Warriors and Roosters got out of recording those wins. But I’ve said many times in this preview that Penrith get more out of losses than wins at this point of the season. They’re so experienced at this time of the year, and have such a quality squad, that losses offer an opportunity to learn. If you think the Warriors and Roosters will be able to play the same way should they meet

Penrith again in the Finals, you’re a mug. The Panthers won’t let it happen. But what did the Warriors and Roosters do so well and how do Penrith avoid it happening against Melbourne on Thursday night? Both sides produced quality line speed, got in Nathan Cleary’s face and tried to strangle Penrith’s attack. And they succeeded. The risk both ran, especially the Roosters, was that they were going to be refereed out of the game. That the man in the middle wouldn’t stand for tactics that essentially involved loitering off-side and getting off the mark a little too quickly in defence. But the gamble was that at this time of the year, the refs put the whistle away a little more. Something that was a set restart 20 weeks ago is seemingly not pulled up now, at least not as often. I wouldn’t be surprised if an email found its way from Ivan Cleary’s desk to the NRL this

week, just as a little nudge about what teams are doing to get under Penrith’s skin. This isn’t about blaming referees. But it is about teams finding ways to stifle what Penrith and in particular Nathan can do in attack. The best teams have found a way to do it and the Panthers will have to deal with that in September. For now though it’s about getting things back on track over the next three weeks against sides not in serious Finals contention. No offence to the opposition ahead, but Penrith can breathe a little easier now that they are through the fire of the last fortnight and even the weeks prior to that. But as we saw against both Canberra and Souths, the teams that aren’t quite on the level as the Roosters and Warriors haven’t nearly figured out how to stop Penrith yet. And I doubt Melbourne have either. Tip: Panthers by 16.

come up with the result that we want.” For the first time since the 2010 season, the Melbourne Storm won’t be playing Finals football this year but they still pose a huge threat down at AAMI Park. With Harry Grant and Cameron Munster named to play, Penrith are expecting a much closer game compared to what they experienced in Round 5 at CommBank Stadium. “It is a little bit weird seeing them miss the Finals. Melbourne are always in the top two or top four without a doubt,” Sorensen said. “They would be disappointed with the way they are going but I think we understand them as a club and as a team and they’re not going to shy away from how they want to play on Thursday night.” The Panthers and Storm have had some incredible battles over the six years, including Grand Finals in 2020 and 2024. Sorensen said he can’t wait to lock horns with the Victorians again. “I absolutely love the challenge against Melbourne especially off the back of a few losses,” he said. “We want to focus on us, play the way we want to play, and go after the result. There’s nothing better than versing Melbourne in Melbourne. They’ll be up for the big game and I’m sure we will too.”
with Cleary over the past week as the club stares down the barrel of three straight losses. The past two weeks have been tough for Penrith, losing to the Warriors in New Zealand before narrowly going down to the Roosters at home last Thursday. “We’ve just had some really good, tough and honest games,” Sorensen said. “I can’t not say the Warriors played really well over there in New Zealand, and I thought the Roosters played a really strong game as well. It’s just unfortunate that we didn’t come up with the result.” Sorensen said the team, who have slipped to second on the NRL ladder, believe not much needs to be fixed heading into tonight’s clash against Melbourne. “I just think we need to be a little bit sharper, whether that’s moving into position a little bit earlier or getting the ball to where it needs to go,” he said. “It’s not huge changes or big fixes, it’s just simple things we need to do better and hopefully we can do that this Thursday night and

our-time Panthers premiership winner Scott Sorensen has shared a glowing tribute to his friend Ivan Cleary ahead of his 500th game as coach. Cleary will become just the seventh coach to achieve the milestone when the Panthers take on the Melbourne Storm in tonight’s crucial game at AAMI Park. Speaking with Extra Time on Tuesday, Sorensen said he’ll miss being coached by Ivan Cleary when he departs for the Perth Bears at season’s end. “I’ve been very fortunate and very lucky that I’ve lent on him so many times over the years – not just as a player but also as a person off the field,” he said. “Whether it’s dealing with my family or dealing with things away from football, he’s just so honest and caring and I’m going to miss our day to day conversations.” It was Cleary who resurrected Sorensen’s struggling NRL career when he joined the Panthers ahead of the 2021 season. “I’m just forever grateful for him as a coach, as a role model, as a leader,” Sorensen said. “I don’t have enough time to say enough good things about him, I’m very grateful. “I’d love to get the win for him on Thursday night. That would be pretty cool.”
“I’m just forever grateful for him as a coach, as a role model, as a leader” Sorensen has incredibly won four NRL premierships with the club over his six seasons at the foot of the Mountains. The 33-year-old said Cleary is more like a mate to him than his coach and he’ll miss their relationship when he departs. “I don’t know if it’s because I’m a little bit older or I feel like I can be a little bit more relaxed and friendly around him, but it’s cool I can have a relationship with him but also understand when it’s time for football chat,” Sorensen explained. “It’s nice to have a relationship like that.” Sorensen and the rest of the Panthers would’ve had several serious “football chats”

Patea is one of many players off-contract with Penrith at the end of 2027, with the softly spoken Kiwi eager to stay at the Panthers long-term. “Staying here would be the main option,” he said. “For me, I’ve grown up here since I moved over from New Zealand. This is my home and I don’t really see myself in any other jersey.” And with fellow prop Liam Henry taking his talents to Perth next year to play with the Bears, even more minutes could open up for Patea at Penrith in 2027. “Liam Henry, ever since he started playing in the NRL, has been such a key player for us off the bench and he brings that aggression,” Patea said. “Him going does leave some big shoes to fill and when that eventually happens, someone’s got to try and step up. I would be keen to, but I’m trying not to think about it just yet as I’ve Luron Patea at Panthers training this week. Photo: Melinda Jane. still got this year to go.”
WW57857
026 hasn’t been the season Penrith Panthers forward Luron Patea had hoped it would be. After playing 13 games in the top grade last year, many expected the front rower to play even more in the NRL this year, but that wasn’t to be. In the pre-season, Patea suffered a devastating tear in his hamstring, preventing him from getting an opportunity in the early rounds. While throughout the year, he also injured his ankle, keeping him on the sideline once again. “It was kind of hard in the pre-season, I had a few injuries that kind of kept me out of training with the squad,” Patea told Extra Time. “I guess I was just trying to train and get myself right to play whether that be in NSW Cup or NRL. I was just pretty keen to put on a jersey and play with the boys.” Eventually, Patea overcame his challenges, playing his first NRL game of the year against the Gold Coast Titans at Cbus Super Stadium in late June. The former Penrith Emus player then backed that game up with 29
minutes in the Panthers v Rabbitohs clash at CommBank Stadium in Round 18 before returning to first grade a fortnight ago against the Warriors in New Zealand. Last week, Patea had a short stint off the bench in Penrith’s loss to the Roosters, bringing his total games played so far in 2026 to four. “I’m really happy that I’m playing in the NRL lately,” Patea admitted. “I just have to keep stringing some good games together and stay healthy.” With Isaah Yeo sidelined for the next month with a serious pec injury, Patea is expecting even more minutes in the front row especially with Lindsay Smith shifting to Yeo’s position at lock. Patea said all going well he’s hoping to play in his first NRL Finals Series this September. “If I do play, this will be my first,” he said. “I’m trying not to think too far ahead after the two games we’ve just lost. I’m just trying to play every week and stay healthy and hopefully get that chance to play in the Finals Series.” While 2026 was off to a slow start for Patea due to his injury crisis, he is hoping to end the year on a high and earn himself a contract extension.

PANTHER RUMBLINGS
with The Masked Panther
Kenny return locked in Kenny back before Finals: I’m hearing that Penrith is very keen for Mitch Kenny to have a run against the Tigers in Round 27 to ensure he is match fit for the Finals. His recovery from a fractured fibula and high-grade syndesmosis injury has been longer than the club had hoped, but he’s nearly there. Expect to see him on the team sheet for the game against the Tigers. He’s been telling people as much over the past week too.
Mitch Kenny.
Another Cleary Jetts in: Expect the Panthers to confirm the signing of Jett Cleary soon after he was formally granted an early release by the Warriors. The Warriors were initially unhappy with the request and reluctant to release the 21-year-old, who is yet to make his first grade debut. But they softened as the process went on. Despite some reports, I believe the relationship between the two clubs is still strong. Marto meeting next week: Liam Martin’s management will meet with Penrith next week as they try to finalise an extension with the club. The NSW forward would love to stay given he has a young family and has settled down in the area. But money will be a big factor in what is likely to be Martin’s final significant contract. There’s a gap at the moment between Penrith and Martin. It’ll be a challenge to close it.
approach the Penrith boss has had in recent years. Cameron is seen as a master of the salary cap and one of the main players in the club’s rise over the past six or seven years. It’s no surprise he regularly comes up at Board meetings across the league. Signing spree: The Panthers have had a busy week, announcing the re-signings of both Casey McLean and Paul Alamoti. And there could be another big one to come – I’m hearing Isaah Yeo is close to inking a fresh extension despite a suggestion earlier this year he’d test the market.
Roosters rattled: Josh Mansour legitimately thought it was a joke when he was approached by an NRL official about his “coaching” of Penrith players on the sideline against the Roosters last Thursday night. The over-sensitive Chooks had lodged the complaint, suggesting Mansour, there as a ground announcer, was offering tips to the likes of Brian To’o and Tom Jenkins. Everyone laughed it off, but it was very petty.
Garner hurt again? Luke Garner has been named on the extended bench for Penrith for tonight’s match against Melbourne. But there’s a little whisper his NRL return was at risk after he picked up a fresh injury playing NSW Cup last week. Cameron approached: Reports that Parramatta approached Panthers CEO Matt Cameron about jumping ship to the Eels isn’t surprising, and it certainly isn’t the first
Journos have it wrong: The suggestion that Nathan Cleary hasn’t commenced negotiations with Penrith about an extended contract, as is being reported by a number of Sydney’s biggest rugby league journalists, simply isn’t true. I understand talks have been underway behind closed doors for some time.
Tab loses faith: For the first time this season, Penrith are no longer favourites with the TAB to win the Minor Premiership. Despite having a softish draw on the way to September, the now second-placed Panthers are $2.85 to finish first, behind the Roosters at $1.60. Penrith do however remain premiership favourites at $3.20, ahead of the Rooters at $3.60 and Warriors at $6.00. Lussick’s side gig: Freddy Lussick has his own channel on YouTube, focused on golf. And he’s landed his biggest guest yet this week – Penrith superstar Nathan Cleary. Search The Back 09 on YouTube to check out the episode – which features some fun and light-hearted moments between the duo (and confirms neither should quit rugby league any time soon).

The Jett effect: Puzzle pieces W Lang on
League with Peter Lang
Jett Cleary. Photo: NRL Photos.
ith so much media focus on the future of the best player in the world Nathan Cleary, it’s safe to say no one thought that his younger brother Jett would steal the spotlight from him last Wednesday afternoon. That is when Code Sports broke the story that Jett Cleary had requested a release from the final year of his contract with the Warriors to join Penrith from 2027. The reason given was that he wanted the opportunity to be coached by his father Ivan before he retired from coaching at the end of next year. Playing alongside his big brother was another reason but obviously one that is not guaranteed. With that one request, rugby league media and supporters went into a speculative frenzy. So many different scenarios were suggested by a 21-year-old’s request for a release. Let’s look at just a few of the scenarios which could happen as a result of this move. One theory is that Nathan Cleary is planning to sign with the Warriors in 2028 because he came out only a week earlier and said he would not join them because he didn’t want to block his brother’s path to first grade. Well Jett won’t be there so problem solved. Another theory was that Nathan also wants an opportunity to play with his younger brother and help him develop into a class halfback so he can take his place at the Panthers once he leaves at the end of 2027.
A third theory is that Jett knows that Nathan will extend his contract with Penrith and the two can play together for the next five years and form the best scrum base brothers combo since the Johns brothers. Now according to some, this is all a possibility because Blaize Talagi hasn’t quite worked out as the team’s five-eighth as hoped, so the position is up for grabs. That’s disrespectful to both Blaize and the club, not to mention untrue. The theories and storylines created from Jett’s request to return to Penrith were endless. My opinion, for what it’s worth, is that in two years the Warriors have not yet given Jett a first grade start despite injuries to key halves Luke Metcalf, Te Maire Martin and Tanah Boyd and perhaps he just wants to legitimately come back to Penrith and be coached by his father and play alongside his brother. The one storyline largely ignored is that at the end of the day, family is the most important thing in the world. Not rugby league, not wealth, not accolades or fame but family. Sure, playing for your father and alongside your brother wouldn’t be too bad either. Fortunately, it looks like the Warriors will release Jett and help make this family reunion possible. Rugby league is the gift that keeps on giving and is without a doubt the greatest soap opera in the world. But family, well as Michael J Fox once said; “Family is not an important thing. It’s everything.”

BEHIND THE GAME
Kenny keen to get back on the field P
enrith Panthers hooker Mitch Kenny has watched his team from the sidelines for most of the season after a hip drop tackle in Round 7 left him with a fractured fibula and a highgrade syndesmosis. Like the fans, Kenny has ridden the highs and lows of the season from the sideline saying he tries to keep his cool when watching from the coach’s box. “I’m a bit of a nervous wreck sometimes!” he laughed. “I find it more nerve-wracking watching the game then actually playing in it. I just feel so helpless and like there is nothing I can do about it. “I’ve been fortunate enough to be up in the box for a lot of the games and that helps me keep a lid on my emotions because I can’t act like a fool in front of the coach. “Iv is what you see is what you get. He’s a pretty cool operator and I think that helps everyone else keep their cool up there, but it certainly gets tense at times.”
Mitch Kenny. Photo: Melinda Jane.
Despite being injured Kenny has recently put pen to paper and re-signed with the club until the end of 2031. “It was a real relief,” he told Behind the Game this week. “This place is home and I really didn’t want to go anywhere else. I feel really fortunate that the club wanted to keep me around and I get to keep progressing here. “I just feel a real sense of community out here. This place is home now and this football club’s a massive part of my life. The people here are some of the most important relationships I have.” Kenny is known for his pasttime of bird watching but the 28-year-old has plenty more hobbies to keep himself busy. “I like to do a bit of reading as well as trying to draw and write a little,” he said. “I’m not so great at either of those but I like doing that. I obviously also enjoy getting outdoors.” Kenny revealed to Behind the Game that he is eyeing a return to the field just before finals, so fans can expect to see him soon.
