Y

ou only have to look back to the last time Penrith played the Titans to realise how much has changed at the Panthers in such a short period of time.

The two sides last met in late May and it was a major slip-up for the Panthers, going down 28-24 at home and showing real signs of concern for the crucial months ahead.

That match in round 11 featured the ‘spine’ everyone had dreamed about in the off-season – Matt Moylan at fullback, Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace in the halves and James Segeyaro at hooker (via the bench). Peta Hiku was in the centres (until he was injured early in the second half) and Sam McKendry started the game at prop – it was close to a full-strength outfit and Penrith wasn’t expected to lose.

Looking back on the game, it was one of the defining results in the middle part of the year that started to force coach Anthony Griffin’s hand towards the future. Slowly, he started a mid-season overhaul at the club that featured the inclusion of Nathan Cleary in the side’s next match against Melbourne, and the shift of Peter Wallace to hooker.

It was a gamble bigger than anything Kenny Rogers could possibly throw out, but time has a funny way of proving people right.

Griffin is now preparing his side for the final two matches of the regular season, and will then shift his focus to an assault on the Finals, with the club now all but guaranteed their spot in the top eight.

Hindsight tells you that Griffin was going to win either way.

Had the changes not quite worked, he would have shrugged it off as another piece in the puzzle we all like to call ‘next year’. As it turns out, he looks like a genius.

The Panthers are one of the most in-form

sides in the top eight, having won their past three matches, and the points are finally starting to flow – a major problem for the side in the first half of the season.

The Titans, who themselves have undergone something of a transformation since that Round 11 meeting, loom as Penrith’s biggest threat leading into the final fortnight of the competition proper. This Saturday’s game offers Gold Coast the opportunity to leapfrog Penrith on the ladder and potentially set up a Queensland blockbuster in week one of the finals. It’d also most likely put Penrith into the dreaded eighth spot on the ladder, depending on how the final round plays out.

While the sides are evenly matched across the park, there’s no doubt that the Titans have a couple of individual gamebreakers that could really tear the match wide open. The obvious one is Jarryd Hayne – he’s already produced a few memorable plays since returning to the NRL a couple of weeks ago but you get

the feeling he’s close to delivering a full 80 minutes of magic.

Metre-eater Konrad Hurrell is also a danger while Greg Bird’s style of play threatens to get under the skin of Penrith’s inexperienced team.

While a home ground advantage will most likely see the Titans go into the game as favourites, I can see this one going down to the final minutes.

ZAK’S GOING HOME » Opinions are split on Zak Hardaker’s

future in the NRL. While the Panthers are unlikely to extend his stay after his cameo appearance this season, some within the club believe he hasn’t been given a chance to show his skills and needs a strong, full pre-season behind him to prove his wares in top flight Australian rugby league. Hardaker’s selection each week is somewhat puzzling – his limited game time and lack of impact, combined with the fact that Penrith is unlikely to offer him a deal in 2017, means that it’s almost a wasted spot on the bench. There hasn’t been all that much interest from other clubs for Hardaker’s services and he’ll head home to England in the offseason, unlikely to ever return.

» More horror stories are emerging about

Corey Payne’s four nightmare months at the helm of the Panthers, and from what I can gather most of them are true. Payne lost the support of most club CEOs as well as NRL boss Todd Greenberg when he sent a bizarre email following a CEOs meeting, suggesting the whole process be overhauled and that he didn’t really learn anything. For a rookie CEO to send such an email put him immediately off side with other clubs. I’m told the NRL was doing handstands when they heard Payne was on his way out of Panthers HQ.

Don’t be surprised if Cleary has the main job if things start looking shaky at the start of the 2017 season.

securing the services of strength and conditioning master Alex Corvo. With Ron Palmer being moved on next year, the club sought out Corvo, regarded by many as the best in the business. Corvo is currently with Brisbane and it’s believed he’s staying there next season.

» Penrith’s Holden Cup premiership

hopes received a huge blow this week when three players were charged by the Match Review Committee. All three players were hit with a Dangerous Throw charge following an incident in the 16th minute of last Friday night’s game against the Tigers. Jarome Luai, Jack Hetherington and Reed Izzard faced a combined total of 15 weeks on the sidelines. Izzard and Hetherington pleaded not guilty and were due to front the judiciary on Wednesday night, while Luai was disputing the grading of his charge.

anthers winger Josh Mansour believes Penrith’s young team of rising stars has what it takes to challenge for a premiership… this year.

The Panthers are currently one of the NRL’s in-form teams, having won five of their last six games.

The game they lost in the stint of victories was a golden point nail-biter against the New Zealand Warriors.

Last weekend they all but assured themselves of a spot in the 2016 finals with a 40-10 thrashing of the Wests Tigers.

Speaking with Extra Time this week, an upbeat and rather confident Mansour said Penrith isn’t just in the top eight to make up the numbers.

“We can do anything, honestly. I have 100 per cent faith in this squad,” he said.

“The belief I have in this side, I believe on our day we can beat any NRL team – I say that with full confidence.”

Mansour’s strong endorsement will be music to the ears of Penrith supporters, who all season have dreamed of playing finals footy in September.

How far the Panthers can go into the finals is a question that the Blues State of Origin winger was more than happy to answer.

that’s very enthusiastic – they are always eager to prove a point,” Mansour said.

“When we last made the finals in 2014 we were under a lot of adversity… but that gave us motivation to play as a team every week.

“This team isn’t much different; we have a lot of young guys who want to prove themselves in the NRL.” 2016 has been an enormous year for the powerhouse winger, who in June made his long-awaited Origin debut before re-signing with the Panthers for a further two years.

Next month, Mansour should also get to play finals footy for the second time in his career and, later this year, he’ll wed his beautiful partner Daniella Toutounji.

“This year has gone so fast but I can’t complain to be honest, I’m definitely not taking the blessings for granted,” Mansour said.

“Re-signing with this club for a further two years was probably one of the most important things for me. I love being here, we have a great team, coaching staff and Board – everyone pushes to be their best here, which I love.”

After a turbulent 2015 that involved a disrupted pre-season and just 12 games played due to various injuries, Mansour is grateful for his opportunities this year.

“Looking back on last year I had an injury plagued run and I knew I wanted to have a big pre-season, especially under a new coach,” he said.

“I’m very grateful for what this year has presented.”

hen Penrith Panthers backrower James FisherHarris burst onto the scene in Round 1 this year, many pundits knew the kid was something special.

19 games on and the young Kiwi – chock-full of aggression – is already being likened to one of the most aggressive rugby league players to ever play the game – Gorden Tallis.

The Broncos legend, who these days spends much of his time in the media, was such a dominating figure on all levels that opponents were afraid to tackle him.

He wasn’t called the “Raging Bull” for nothing.

Take for example former Wests Tigers and NSW Blues fullback Brett Hodgson.

In the 2002 State of Origin series Tallis, whilst playing for Queensland, performed one of the most memorable tackles in rugby league history when he dragged a young Hodgson several metres before eventually tossing him – rag doll style – out of the field of play.

It’s a tackle that Penrith’s “Raging Bull” knows all too well.

“I didn’t watch much league growing up but I remember him (Tallis),” Fisher-Harris told Extra Time.

“I remember him throwing that NSW guy (Hodgson) over the sideline in an Origin game – that was my only league memory when I was little.”

Fisher-Harris, who grew up on rugby union in New Zealand, was just six-yearsold when that tackle took place but it has stuck with him ever since.

Tough as they come: James Fisher-Harris While the now 20-year-old doesn’t purposely run out each week to be like Tallis, he also doesn’t mind being compared to one of the game’s all-time greats.

“I just play my own game out there, that’s how I’ve always played but people see similar things in him and I,” FisherHarris said.

Penrith’s coaching staff are also big fans of the second-rower’s aggression on the field, even though he’s accidentally injured three of teammates in the space of a few short months.

“The coaches haven’t really said anything about it… they just like the aggression. The boys are a bit scared sometimes, I do feel pretty bad,” he joked.

ith clubs fighting for survival in the NRL’s planned 14 team competition for the year 2000, there was plenty of focus on Penrith and its future. Merger talks with Parramatta took place, and it seemed that the Panthers’ chances of being included in the new competition were somewhat shaky.

With the battle for survival on, the gloves were well and truly off – and during this period, a bitter war with the Sydney Roosters would erupt.

Penrith believed that some clubs were claiming higher crowds than were actually at matches – a major issue given crowd numbers were part of the criteria that would help decide the 14 teams for 2000.

During this period, Roosters boss Nick Politis called Penrith a “club in crisis”, words that would spark a major drama and scandal in the game.

An angry Panthers boss Roger Cowan dispatched photographer Neil Billington to opposition grounds to photograph attendances.

When Billington was sent to the Sydney Football Stadium to photograph a Roosters game, stunning revelations were made.

Billington took photographs at specific times during the game and handed them

over to a “counting cross-functional team” who, using magnifying glasses, counted every single person in every bay of the ground. The tally the team came up with was compared to the crowd figures submitted by the Roosters to the NRL, and there was significant discrepancies.

The Panthers leaked the findings to the major papers, and the story – even before the days of Twitter and Facebook – went viral.

It became the biggest story in the game for days, if not weeks. Roosters marketing boss Richard Fisk fumbled and bumbled his way through an explanation – trying to claim that everyone must have been in corporate boxes when the photographer was snapping away.

But then came the smoking gun – Billington had photographed a woman at the Roosters’ turnstile popping the same entry ticket in and out of the turnstile.

The game was up.

There’s many reasons why Penrith survived the 2000 cull and others didn’t – but the episode of Billington’s photos and Penrith’s shrewd detective work proved how fickle the criteria was and how it could be exploited.

Had Penrith been excluded from the competition in 2000, they would not have enjoyed the same public support of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, which included street marches the like of which Sydney had never seen.

But emotion means very little in a court room – who knows just how important Billington’s photos could have become.

Penrith Panthers are in real danger of missing the finals after going down to the Canterbury Bulldogs 28-22 last weekend.

Penrith currently sit in ninth position on 24 points, with one round of the competition remaining.

If the Panthers manage to defeat the New Zealand Warriors in Auckland this Sunday, they’ll need to rely on either Canterbury or Wentworthville to lose their respective matches in order to secure a finals spot.

Fortunately for Penrith, they’ll know their fate before they hit the Mt Smart Stadium pitch.

Last Saturday afternoon at a sunny Pepper Stadium, Penrith did their absolute best to break their unwanted four game losing streak but weren’t able to come up with a late surge to stay in the game.

Penrith trailed 18-16 at break after scoring three tries in the first half through Zac Mackay, Moses Leota and Chris Aunese-Scanlon.

Down by two at half-time, Penrith hit the lead early in the second half through Corey Harawira-Naera.

However, the Bulldogs returned fire with a double of their own to regain the lead.

The Panthers continued to push for an equaliser right up until the final whistle but weren’t able to get over the stripe.

It was the first time all year Penrith had lost two consecutive matches, which doesn’t bode too well heading into the finals.

Penrith trailed 6-4 at half-time before the Tigers took control in the second stanza to blow the game apart.

Try scorers for the Panthers included Christian Chrichton, Billy Burns and Jack Hetherington.

In some worrying news out of the match, Penrith could be missing three of their best for the remainder of the season after Hetherington, Reed Izzard and Jarome Luai were all charged by the MRC for a dangerous throw.

notched up six straight wins after they demolished the Hills District Bulls 24-6 in Round 23 of the Ron Massey Cup competition.

A great defensive effort proved too good for the visitors as St Marys repelled several attacking raids.

Leading 16-0 at half-time, Brad Drew’s men maintained their effort and composure right to the end to secure yet another great victory.

Try scorers for St Marys included Adrian Davies, Geoff Daniela, Robbie Graham and Alan Eisenhuth. Davies kicked four from four.

St Marys remain in fourth position and will battle the second-placed Western Suburbs Magpies at 2pm this Saturday at Concord Oval.
