THE PANTHERS PLAYED THE TITANS EARLIER THIS YEAR PHOTO: MELINDA JANE
PREVIEW BY TROY DODDS
Season heats up in Darwin T
HE PENRITH PANTHERS FIND themselves in unusual circumstances this weekend as they travel to Darwin to take on the Gold Coast Titans for the second time this season. Earlier this year, the Titans beat the Panthers in a game that Penrith dominated in parts, but couldn’t take control of. It was one of a few games this season that the Panthers should have been able to emerge victorious from but somehow snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
For all of those reasons and more, this weekend is incredibly important. The Titans, too, have plenty to play for, not the least of which is their pride after they were demolished 46-16 by Newcastle last weekend. A better second half showing couldn’t hide an embarrassing first half that saw the Titans down by a whopping 36-0 half time. Worse than the scoreline was the leg injury suffered by rampaging centre Jamaal Idris, who will miss the rest of the season.
seems to get constantly worse. The Titans will certainly offer more in attack on Saturday night than the Dragons did last weekend, and Penrith’s defensive performance will need to be better, too. Yes, the Panthers only conceded two tries in the game but one gets the feeling that the Gold Coast have much more up their sleeve in attack than the Dragons. Brad Tighe and James Roberts will need to defend much better than they did last weekend and Roberts will need to position
replacement hooker James Segeyaro. His performance last weekend seems to have made the rest of the rugby league world stand up and take notice, and the lovable youngster is now being regarded as the signing of the season by league experts. Whilst it took the plan a while to come to fruition, I think most would agree that having both Segeyaro and Kevin Kingston on the field at the same time has been a surprising success. It is a winning formula and certainly causes some issues for defending teams.
The last time Penrith played in Darwin was against Newcastle in a trial match in 2007, Matthew Elliott’s first year as coach. The Knights won 30-18 in wet conditions. Much has changed since that round four battle and this weekend’s game looms as an important one for both sides. For the ninth placed Panthers, a win will ensure they finish the weekend inside the top eight given the seventh placed Bulldogs and eighth placed Knights play each other. It would also see them join the Titans on 18 points, and at worst would see them finish the weekend just three points adrift of the top four.
Penrith won ugly last Saturday against the Dragons, and were probably lucky to be in front at half time after a rather scrappy first half in which they constantly gave the Dragons an opportunity to punish their mistakes. However, the opposition was poor, and Penrith’s defence was tough. Importantly, the Panthers would have got a lot of confidence out of their second half performance and the win in general, especially considering an injury toll that just
himself better when it comes to bombs – he is a liability in that area and, to be honest, would probably make a better centre than a winger for that reason. Either way, his blinding speed will be something to admire when he gets into the clear. The Titans would be much better served in bombing Roberts and putting him under pressure than they would the ever-reliable David Simmons. The X-Factor for Penrith remains livewire
With Tim Grant having one last chance to prove to NSW selectors that he is worthy of his Blues jersey, and Mose Masoe in rampaging form, there’s every reason to believe the Panthers can beat the Titans this weekend. But there can be no denials that they will have to improve immensely on their performance last weekend if they are going to get the two competition points that are up for grabs. EXTRATIME | 3

MOSE MASOE IS HAVING HIS BEST SEASON PHOTO: MELINDA JANE
STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR
Desire to travel fuels Mosoe MOSE MASOE WILL QUIT THE PANTHERS AT THE END OF THE SEASON BECAUSE HE WANTS HIS FAMILY TO “EXPERIENCE THE WORLD”, BUT HE SAYS HE MAY ONE DAY RETURN TO PENRITH STADIUM... After playing his best game in Panthers’ colours all season, hulking prop Mose Mosoe has revealed for the first time why he’s leaving the club at the end of the season. Speaking with Extra Time, the man they call the “wrecking ball” said he’s leaving Penrith for English Super League club St Helens because it was a great opportunity for him and his young family. “We want to travel and I think it was the
right time for me to go,” he said. “I really want to come back to the NRL one day, so I didn’t want to go to England when I was older because I wouldn’t have been able to provide as much. “I want to go over there and challenge myself and hopefully come back to the NRL.” 24-year-old Masoe has had an outstanding season since joining the Panthers from the Sydney Roosters in the off-season.
Last Saturday during Penrith’s 25-10 win over St George-Illawarra, Masoe, who came off the bench, ran a whopping 192 metres – that’s more metres than any of the other 33 players that took the field that game. Masoe said it was a really tough decision to leave his Panthers contract a year early because he was starting to find some form. “It was really tough because I’m finally getting my rhythm here,” he said. “I was just starting to come good, I could feel the momentum, I could feel the boys were coming good too. But I just thought it was time for my family and I to go experience the world.”
Joining Masoe in the north of England next year will be Panther teammate Luke Walsh, who also signed a two-year deal with St Helens. “I actually didn’t know Walshy was going there as well until all of a sudden it came out, so it was kind of good because he’s like a little General here, he orders you around,” Masoe admitted. One day, the big forward may return to Penrith Stadium. “I would love to come back to Penrith... you can just feel it in the players and coaching staff that something special is going to happen here sometime soon.”

Grant overcomes the Blues IT’S BEEN A ROCKY YEAR FOR TIM GRANT, BUT HE’S HOPING THE SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON WILL SEE HIM RETURN TO HIS BEST FORM, AND PERHAPS RECLAIM HIS BLUES ORIGIN JUMPER... line-up after spending five weeks on the sideline with a broken hand from changing a tyre. It so happens that the freak injury would not only prove costly for the Panthers, who lost all their games with Grant missing, but also damaged his own chances of representing NSW for a second straight year. Grant didn't want to elaborate on the exact details of his infamous impersonation of an
ARE YOU CARWISE?
"I had the strapping tape on which sort of restricted me a bit, but once I took the strapping off I felt good after that. "I wasn't so much nervous about the hand, I was more nervous about dropping the ball, and that didn't help after I coughed up the first two, it was a nightmare to be honest." Grant said the week break between the Dragons game and the Gold Coast Titans this Saturday in Darwin would do him the world of good. He hopes Penrith can get back on another winning streak as they prepare to charge for the finals. "I played in Darwin a couple of years ago, it's a hot place," Grant said.

IM GRANT HAS ONE last chance to prove himself worthy of a New South Wales jersey for the State of Origin decider. That chance is against the Gold Coast Titans on Saturday night in Darwin. It wasn't the prettiest comeback after a month away from football but Grant is happy to have blown off the cobwebs against the Dragons last Saturday night. The 25-year-old returned to the Penrith
NRMA roadside assistance expert, saying he needs to keep his mind on the job. "I don't want to talk about it, it burns me," Grant said talking about his hand. "It was tough but if you keep thinking about that and not thinking about things I need to, you get sidetracked, so I just try and move on and create another opportunity… hopefully." Grant played 44 minutes in his longawaited return against the Dragons, making just 74 metres and dropping two sitters early on. "I struggled at first, I dropped my first two balls," Grant admitted.

PRIDDO’S POINT WITH LUKE PRIDDIS
Where to for Lachlan Coote? 2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers
I
T WAS GREAT SEEING the Panthers slip back into the top eight again with a good win at home over the Dragons. A looming question will be what coach Cleary does when Lachlan Coote makes his return, which is possibly around four weeks’ time? A good position to be in but certainly a hard question to answer with the form of Matt Moylan at the back and young Issac John at five-eighth, both positions Cootey has played in first grade. Coote was injured in round two and was originally expected to be out for the season but now it looks like he will be back on the field this year. Last week I spoke about the poor form of Benji Marshall and his future, but last round
he was the star in the Tigers’ emphatic win over the Storm. It was not so much the way he played, it was the way his team mates responded when he scored that last try. They all celebrated with him, piling on top in the in-goal area in a great display of mateship. While it doesn’t mean he won’t be leaving the club, it shows that he is still wanted by his mates. Despite the fact players get paid well to do something that they love to do, if you ask most players they will tell you one of the best things about playing footy is the great friendships that you form with your team mates that last long past when you stop playing.
Onto Origin and Paul Gallen is in serious doubt for the decider. Unfortunately Nathan Meritt had a game that he will not forget for the wrong reasons in game two and unlike game one, NSW were totally outplayed, even taking out the poor refereeing decisions. It was also the first time in four games that I believe QLD actually played well and they still had room for improvement when I look at the fact Cameron Smith was still far from his attacking best from hooker. I certainly believe the forced changes and dramas of the week leading into the game two played their part and given the question marks still hanging over the squad, it’s a nervous time for all Blues fans.

Stars of the future on show TALENTED LEAGUE PLAYERS FROM ACROSS THE LOCAL AREA TOOK PART IN THE MARK GEYER CUP, WITH THE GRAND FINALS HELD AT PENRITH STADIUM LAST WEEK...
T
HEY’RE ALL STILL IN high school but many of the students involved in last week’s inaugural Mark Geyer Cup Grand Finals have very bright futures in rugby league. The first grand final of the day, the U-14’s, was played between Erskine Park High School and Riverstone High School. A tight opening few minutes was blown open by Erskine Park High scoring two
quick tries, but a scintillating solo effort by Riverstone’s halfback just before half time brought the scores closer at 12-6. Erskine Park High started strong in the second half and put on another two tries early to take a comfortable lead 22-6. To Riverstone’s credit they kept fighting all the way to the end with the score ending up a respectable 28-18 in Erskine Park High’s favour.
The U-16’s grand final was one of the most anticipated games of the season due to it being the first meeting between Winmalee High School and Jamison High School all season. Both teams were strong and wellstructured, which is why both sides came into the game undefeated. The first half was very tight, end to end football, so it didn’t come as any surprise that the half time score was locked at 0-0. But Jamison High broke the game open early in the second half with a converted try that saw them up 6-0. The score stayed like that until the final 10 minutes when

Winmalee finally got a try out wide but failed to convert. With Jamison High clinging on to a twopoint lead with just minutes remaining, they then went on a last minute scoring spree to seal the win once and for all 18-4. The day concluded with the Opens grand final between St Clair High School and Richmond High School. St Clair High, the form team in the competition, ran out comfortable 30-0 winners in the end. Mark Geyer was there on the day to present trophies to the winning teams and speak to each side.

Heartbreaking loss THE PANTHERS MISSED OUT ON A CHANCE TO GO TO THE TOP OF THE HOLDEN CUP TABLE LAST WEEKEND, LOSING TO THE LOWLY DRAGONS IN THE FINAL MINUTE AT PENRITH STADIUM...
T
STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR
PHOTO: MELINDA JANE
HERE’S ONLY ONE WORD to describe Penrith’s final minute loss to St George-Illawarra in last weekend’s Holden Cup – heartbreaking. After a back and forth game score-wise throughout, Penrith jumped in front to lead the Dragons 14-12 with just minutes remaining on the clock. However, a clever short kick-off by St George-Illawarra with less than two minutes to spare resulted in a crucial Penrith mistake. With the Dragons peppering their attack at Penrith’s goal line to no avail, they had one last piece of ammunition left – a deft little grubber kick, which resulted in Dragon Jackson Hastings pouncing on the ball to snatch victory in heartbreaking fashion. Panthers Holden Cup coach David Tangata-Toa admitted his side “probably didn’t deserve to win the game”. “We did really well to stay in the game but we just had too many errors,” he said. “I thought we had got out of jail scoring
with two minutes to go but they kicked off and we dropped it again.” Tangata-Toa said his side took their second straight loss tough and were feeling very dejected after the match. “The boys were very disappointed… I didn’t really have to say too much, they knew they blew a chance there,” he said. This Sunday afternoon the Panthers will look to bounce back from the demoralising defeat when they take on the Gold Coast Titans at Ned Byrne Field in Chinderah on the NSW and Queensland border. “We just need to get the job done… get in and get out with the win because we need to get back to those winning ways,” TangataToa said. “We’ve dropped two in a row now, something we haven’t done all year.” The Panthers will again be without their best player, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, who is away for a NSW Schoolboy Carnival. He should be back for round 18.

Josh Dugan hasn’t had much luck against the Panthers this year. Not only has he lost three matches (two for the Dragons, and one for Canberra), but now he’s been cited for shoulder charging Matt Moylan during last Saturday night’s game. Dugan took the early guilty plea over the incident and has been suspended for one game. Also in trouble out of last weekend’s game was Nathan Fien, who lashed out with his boot at Lewis Brown late in the match. He was hit with a dangerous contact charge.

LEAGUE NEWS
Working together POLITICS AND FOOTBALL HAVE NOT ALWAYS GONE TOGETHER, BUT AS A NEW PROGRAM SHOWS, THERE’S EXCELLENT WAYS TO FORM PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN THE TWO VERY DIFFERENT WORLDS...
T
DAVE SMITH, MARISE PAYNE AND MATT THISTLEHWAITE AT THE LAUNCH
HE WORLDS OF RUGBY league and politics may be very different, but they actually share very common goals in society. The exciting launch of the Federal Parliamentary Friends of Rugby League group at Parliament House in Canberra recently was a great success and offers an ideal opportunity for Members to work with the NRL to make a positive impact in the communities they serve. The day kicked off with the annual Pollies State of Origin Touch Football match, won by NSW, followed by the official launch by NRL CEO Dave Smith, Friends of Rugby League co-convenors Senators Marise Payne and Matt Thistlethwaite and NRL ambassadors Nathan Hindmarsh and Alan Tongue. Senator Payne said parliamentarians and the NRL supported many similar goals, including promoting healthy lifestyles, increasing employment and celebrating the
role of women in society. “This is about more than supporting rugby league at the highest level, which is an integral part of Australian sporting life, it’s also about promoting the value of programs such as Rugby League Reads, Learn Earn Legend and Women in League leadership initiatives in a non-party political way,” Senator Payne said. “We all have the same objectives, from encouraging participation in sport, closing the gap on indigenous disadvantage and leading by example on drug and alcohol education, so forming this exciting partnership makes perfect sense.” Mr Smith said that by working more closely with MPs and Senators, the NRL can deliver a better game for the fans and local clubs, and can also work together to grow those communities, give them a voice and achieve the many goals they have in common on health, employment and social participation.

ENRITH WARATAHS WOMEN’S PLAYER Tarah Westera has had one interesting upbringing in the world of rugby league. Right now the 29-year-old is in the UK playing in her third Women’s Rugby League World Cup for the Australian Jillaroos, but it’s her journey leading up to this point that makes for one fascinating tale. Growing up in the small working class town of Innisfail in Queensland, Westera ditched a promising swimming career at the age of 16 because she was simply “bored of it”. At the time Westera was hanging out with Sheena Slater, the sister of NRL superstar Billy Slater, with whom she would often play backyard footy. “Billy was really good friends with my cousin and we’d all play footy together in the backyard,” she said. “I mainly used to play with his sister Sheena too, that’s what you did in Innisfail – just play footy.” After knowing Slater since she was a teenager, Westera was very surprised he turned out to be the player that he is today –
one of the world’s best. “Billy was never a good player at school, his dad coached but he just wasn’t a football player, he just did his horse stuff,” Westera said referring to Slater’s interest in horse training. But it wasn’t just Billy Slater who Westera crossed paths with on her road to women’s rugby league stardom. “In 2001 when I was 17, I moved from Innisfail to Nambour on the Sunshine Coast where I joined their women’s rugby league team,” Westera said. “From there I got picked in the Queensland team to travel to Canberra to play in the women’s State of Origin. Mal Meninga was the national women’s selector at the time and he selected me in my first Australian team to play in the World Cup in New Zealand in 2003.” Over the past decade, a lot has happened in Westera’s young life including making countless representative teams as well as relocating to Sydney for work. She is currently a member of the Penrith Waratahs ladies team who play in the Sydney Women’s Metropolitan Competition.

THE FOOTY SHOW INSIDER
Come and join us in the studio EXCLUSIVE to Extra Time, our secret insider drops all the goss and information from behind the scenes of one of the most popular rugby league shows on television, Channel Nine’s ‘The Footy Show’
A
S THURSDAY NIGHT ROLLS around once again, hundreds of punters make their way to Channel Nine Studios to be a part of The Footy Show’s live studio audience. This week, the Insider plucked an audience member from the crowd and probed them about their first live television experience. “I watch the show every week and I’m really excited to see a different atmosphere”, Kate from Minchinbury smiles. Cladded in her treasured Panthers jersey Kate had a wish list for her night in ‘The Footy show’ audience. “I hope I get picked for the Kick For Cash, I’m totally gonna go for it myself. It’ll be cool to see what goes on behind the scenes, like during breaks and stuff like that,” she said. The crowd rolls in, readied in
anticipation. When the boys make their way through the smoke filled tunnel another show is underway. We were scouting our eyes over Kate, who made the trek to see her favourites in the flesh. “It was totally worth the drive and staying up for,” she said. “It was really exciting, the warm-up guy had us singing and dancing before the show, and during the ad breaks we were able to ask the panel questions; I got to see the boys from a more personal side.” Although her photo wasn’t chosen on the Kick For Cash carousel Kate recommends a Thursday night out at ‘The Footy Show’. “Tickets are free, I’d definitely come again with my friends,” she said. For a night of laughs, footy and a close-up look at The Fat; watching ‘The
Footy Show’ is an experience to be had. And hey, you might even get your face on telly. “I really hope I get on TV, everyone’s watching at home it’ll be so funny!” Kate said. To be a part of our live studio audience head to our Facebook page facebook.com/NRLFootyShow and click on the Eventopia tab. Live and uncensored, ‘The Footy Show’ airs on Thursdays at 8.30pm on Channel Nine. Catch up on anything you’ve missed online at www.footyshow.com.au. Find us on Twitter @thefootyshownrl Email us at footyshownrl@nine.com. au if there’s anything you would like to ask. Remember, we’ve been going for 20 years this year and the show has never been better!

Dozens of singers and musicians performed at Kalinda Jade Studios’ annual “Rock of All Ages” concert held at St Marys Leagues Club in April. Kalinda Jade Studios used its 2013 concert to raise funds for The Luke Priddis Foundation which supports children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Through ticket sales and a huge raffle – which included the major prize of an electric guitar – attendees of Kalinda Jade Studios’ concert raised just under $1000 for The Luke Priddis Foundation. Studio owner and music teacher, Kalinda Jade, said she was thrilled that the event raised so much money. “The Luke Priddis Foundation does fantastic work to improve and maximise the services and opportunities available to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families.” she said. “We have students of all different ages with a variety of different needs and it was important to everyone at the studio that we make a contribution to an organisation that will have a direct impact on lives of many of the students and the families that attend our studio.” The full-house was impressed with the array of talent to take the stage.
Students performed a range of musical styles using various instruments to keep the audience entertained. Everything from classical piano to beatboxing was on show. As well as individual performances, two bands from Kalinda Jade Studios’ KJ ROCK program, ‘Deafening Riot’ and ‘Public Propaganda’, also performed. “All of our students worked really hard in the lead up to the big night,” said Kalinda. “So we thank our students, their families and all our helpers for making the concert such a huge success.” Prizes for the raffle were donated by local businesses: AMF Bowling Penrith, Guitar Factory Penrith, Krispy Kreme, Cath’s Cakes, St Marys Leagues Club, and Schmidty’s Catering at the Gaels, along with many personal donations made by members of the community. ANTHERS COACH IVAN CLEARY won’t be resting come the end of the season – he’ll be on duty in the Rugby League World Cup. Cleary was this week appointed as Assistant Coach for the New Zealand side, rated as the biggest threat to the Australian side in the tournament.
Cleary will assist Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney, who is hoping to lead New Zealand to consecutive World Cup wins after they took out the 2008 tournament. Cleary knows the New Zealand side well, having coached at the Warriors for six years before joining the Panthers for the 2012 NRL season.
